The series received many nominations and awards including BAFTA, Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards and Emmy Awards. It was well received by the audience and praised by the critics. The series dramatizes the story of the huge explosion that erupted at the nuclear power plant, in northern Ukraine, at Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet Union, in April 1986.
