Anwar Masood is one of the most respectable names in the world of Pakistani literature. He is the professor of Persian but he got his name mostly for his Punjabi poetry. He has spoken about the double standards of society, loss of civilization and social responsibility in his poems but wrapped all that up in a wrapper of fun and humour. Anwar Masood was a guest on Hafiz Ahmed’s podcast and he spoke about his famous poem Maa and shared that how it is not just a poem but a true story.
He shared that he was teaching at a school in Kunjah after his graduation and that is where he saw the scene between the two boys Akram and Basheer. He was so moved and emotional by the story that he wrote a poem on it and Maa is actually inspired by a true story.
Anwar Masood shared that to this day, after about 50 years now, he still gets emotional and teary-eyed as soon as he starts reading this poem and the same happens to anyone who is listening. He also kept crying the whole night when he was writing it.
Here is the poem and its reality by Anwar Masood:
