Prince Karim Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the Ismaili community, passed away today at the age of 88. He was famous for his philanthropy, development work, and spiritual guidance. He died peacefully in Lisbon, Portugal, surrounded by his family. His death was confirmed by his designated successor, who shared the news via a statement from his charity on social media.

Prince Aga Khan was born in December 13, 1936, in Geneva, he spent his early years in Nairobi, Kenya. He later moved to Switzerland, where he attended the prestigious Le Rosey School, and then went on to study Islamic history at Harvard University.

He became Imam of Ismailis at the age of 20, after the death of his grandfather, Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan, in 1957. He was the fourth to hold this title, which was first granted in the 1830s by the Emperor of Persia to Karim’s great-great-grandfather when he married the emperor’s daughter.
