Atiqa Odho is a senior Pakistani TV and film actor known for her remarkable acting skills and her popular shows like Humsafar, Nijat, Sitara Aur Mehrunnisa, Besharam, Dasht, Dao, Pyar Kay Sadqay, Kaisi Teri Khudgharzi and others. She is currently making headlines for her back to back bold statements in the TV review show Kya Drama Hai, airs daily on 24 News HD.
Recently, while reviewing Parwarish, Atiqa Odho lost the track and started bashing the arranged marriages in Pakistan.
Talking about it, Atiqa Odho said, “Forceful marriage is painful for anyone. Any kind of forced relationship is painful for both men and women. It’s traumatic. We belong to a conservative society where girls and boys don’t meet and talk and then suddenly their wedding night comes where they don’t know each other and are supposed to be intimate. I often interview people with arrange marriages. I ask questions like, ‘What are your thoughts on the wedding night?’ and they reply to me. I mean I am very much fascinated with this concept where a girl is in parda her whole life and suddenly she gets married, and is supposed to have physical intimacy with a stranger. I have asked multiple people and they have told their stories.”
Social media users are raising eyebrows on Atiqa Odho’s bold criticism of arranged marriages in Pakistani society, which according to her is conservative. A fan wrote, “Atiqa Odho has experienced three love marriages, why were they not successful if she knew her partner so well before marriage”. Another wrote, “Atiqa Odho has always been a colourful person, she has a lot of stories to tell.” A fan wrote, “Now, they have started calling out the personal lives of the public and almost forgotten about reviewing dramas, unbelievable!”. A fan wrote, “I once used to think Atiqa Odho is an innocent person, who was wrongly caught in drinking scandal”. Another said, “I have been noticing her for quite a few days and she has been giving too bold opinions about various Matters”. Another fan stated, “Islam is a beautiful religion and you liberals cannot understand what it preaches”.
Almost all the social media users said that arranged marriages are different today because girls and boys take time to know each other before marriage. Many fans accused Atiqa Odho for spreading liberals’ agenda and majority of social media users also called for the ban on the show Kya Drama Hai. Fans also criticized PEMRA for not doing its job.
