Benazir Bhutto was a renowned leader in the Muslim world who left behind a remarkable political legacy. She was the first woman elected to lead a democratic Muslim-majority nation. Born on June 21, 1953, in Karachi, she twice served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan and passionately championed democratic values until her tragic assassination on December 27, 2007, in Rawalpindi. In 1987, she married Asif Ali Zardari and had three children—Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari, and Aseefa Bhutto Zardari—who have carried forward their mother’s legacy. Today, her family leads her political party.

Recently, an interview with Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari and Aseefa Bhutto Zardari has been making the rounds on social media, in which they became emotional while sharing details of their last meeting with their mother, Benazir Bhutto.

Bakhtawar Bhutto shared, “My birthday was near, and I had just met her the night before she was going to leave. She said, ‘I want to wish you happy birthday in advance,’ to which I replied, ‘Don’t wish me in advance. Wish me in January.’ And she said, ‘You know, I’m wishing you now.’ After she was gone, I found this necklace in her drawer. It said, ‘Happy 18th birthday.’ So I feel like she was prepared.”

Aseefa Bhutto Zardari added, “She kept on telling me, ‘Happy birthday, happy birthday.’ I was like, ‘Why are you telling me now?’ She said, ‘What do you want for your birthday?’ I said, ‘I want you to come back.’ She replied, ‘I’ll try my best.’ My love.” Watch here:
