This was another remarkably impressive episode of Gunah. Gunah is a directorial genius which shows how a director’s vision can make all the difference. In each episode, the director has not only put the acting skills of the ace actors to good use but has also used music, sound effects, and most interestingly silence to add more value and meaning to the scenes. This final product makes it clearer than ever that a talented team led by a visionary director can take the viewers on an extraordinary journey.
I must mention here that the sound quality of this drama is so impressive that it is at par with the cinematic experience. To be honest, it is actually better than many Pakistani films I have watched in the cinema! Although, the plot is also interesting and different but what truly stands out is the treatment given to the script. Gunah’s production values, direction, and performances have definitely elevated its level and have turned it into a masterpiece. The fact that this is a miniseries that will soon end makes it an even bigger treat for the viewers who are sick and tired of dramas that test their patience and are dragged to the limit.
Introducing Ahmed
Until last week I was still not sure whether Ahmed really was a ‘victim’ because one of the conversations in particular in one of the previous episodes suggested that he could have become an accomplice. However, this latest episode focused more on Ahmed than ever before and it can easily be concluded that he was as good as they come! He was obviously someone who could not even hurt a fly and his relationship with Noor was such that he would have done everything in his power to protect her. Each one of the scenes covering his character showed his caring, sensitive, and responsible side. Ali Raza deserves all the appreciation for taking up roles that require a persona that is completely different from his real-life personality and get-up. He has breathed life into this character and is extremely convincing as the ‘good boy’. In Mohabbat Gumshuda Meri he is seen playing a role that is unlike this one. I am definitely looking forward to watching more of him because I feel he has a lot to offer. He is not another good-looking model ‘trying’ to act but he is a performer who refuses to let his looks or modeling background define his acting career. Clearly, he is not afraid of experimenting and is not desperate to play the lead alone.
Noor and Meher
Ab na cheehnana paray ga because I am done!Noor and Meher’s relationship as well as their opposite personalities were explored further in this episode through flashback scenes. We have watched too many such opposites in our Pakistani dramas but their equation has an element of pure evil which is anything but ‘usual’. Apart from that, Meher clearly takes the lead and keeps the viewers engaged. Her characterization is on point and this has to be Saba Qamar’s most powerful performance after Kamli. She has nailed Meher’s craziness and her underlined issues. Her eyes literally speak more than any of the dialogues written for this character. At the same time, she is a pro at putting on a show when needed. She turns into a victim whenever she feels she needs to do so. However, she cannot hide her true emotions; the madness in her eyes is a constant and for that alone Saba Qamar deserves an award. Juggun Kazim is equally convincing as the sweet and naïve older sister who understands her young sister’s flaws but could never have expected what she was planning. Juggun has translated the softness of this character on-screen in a way that is extremely likable. As I said, this is not the first time that we have witnessed a younger sister having an affair with her brother-in-law but Gunah is definitely not Jalan!
Match Made in Hell
Is waqt tum mujhe mere aashiq nahin aik kamzor mard lg rahe ho. Meher and Malik Hayat are an on-screen jodi like no other! Their ‘lust’ for each other and their madness have been depicted on-screen in the most impactful manner by the uber-talented duo. Sarmad Sultan Khoosat has the screen presence needed to make this character as larger than life as it should have been and his on-screen chemistry with Saba Qamar proves yet again that these two make the perfect team. The dead silence in this particular scene was indicative of the calm before the storm. There was no need for a background score either considering how intense the performances were. This scene was the perfect portrayal of their relationship dynamics. It reminded me of the scenes from Kamli that were both powerful and disturbing.
Meher is the evil genius who is constantly pushing Malik Hayat to do whatever is needed to prove that he loves her. Malik Hayat’s initial response and concerns went to show that like any other criminal-minded individual; he wanted to get his wife out of the way without maligning his name or reputation. Like many such perpetrators, divorce did not seem like a ‘logical’ way out.
The Investigation
Sabiha has been completely consumed by the case and continued to leave no stone unturned to find out any missing pieces of the puzzle. The investigation was once again covered in detail and logically. By the end of this episode, Sabiha got what she wanted with the help of a competent officer who truly earned her shabashi. Rabia Butt makes every single scene count. She has translated Sabiha’s no-nonsense attitude just as well as her soft and sensitive side. Nabi Baksh is on the right track as well now and it seems as if by the end of the series, he will have a complete makeover.
Final Remarks
Gunah has been a fantastic watch, every single scene and frame has been well-crafted and put together perfectly. There are times when you question a few things about the script but the treatment given to the script has been flawless. Apart from the well-established actors who continue to impress in every single episode, Fahad Hashmi truly stands out because of his perfect dialogue delivery and body language. The preview of the next episode was quite elaborate but I am still hoping that the makers have some surprises in store for us next week.

Soon after the last episode, Abdullah Kadwani announced the season 2 of the blockbuster drama Tere Bin. The producer thanked the audience for their support in the Tere Bin’s successful journey. Many fans got excited about season 2, they positively responded to the announcement of the producer. The supporters were of the view that they would only root for the season 2 because of Meerab and Murtasim’s romantic scenes.
Majority was against the idea of the producer of making season 2 of the drama. The producers did not play it safe by keeping this character as a sidetrack or ‘one of the’ main stories. It is always pleasant watching stories about characters with unique circumstances especially when such stories are told unapologetically and with the utmost confidence. The viewers can only fall in love with a character and relate to the story if the makers had enough faith in it themselves while creating it.
What Makes Guru (Sattar) Stand Out
First of all, I would like to clarify that what makes Guru’s character stand out is not its gender or its gender identity. Guru is much more than its gender and that is what makes this character truly unique. Guru’s existence is obviously influenced by his gender but does he let any of that stand in his way? Absolutely not! We have watched many intersex characters in our dramas before as well therefore a story revolving around gender is definitely not the actual novelty here. The novelty is how the character has been penned down in particular. Most of the time intersex characters are shown living miserable lives and their entire identity revolves around their gender. Their stories in our dramas have been based on their bechargi, which is also a sad reality, therefore the fact that Guru is not a victim is the most refreshing element of the story. Guru is a strong, sensitive, and loving individual who is capable of making the kind of sacrifices that only someone with a strong paternal instinct can make. At the same time he stands his ground whenever he is faced with a difficulty, therefore his resilience and steadfastness is another positive trait that makes this character appealing.
The first few episodes of the drama focused on the strong and sensitive side of Sattar. Later on, we were introduced to an individual who could keep friendships and was great at solving problems. The most recent episode was the best because Guru’s character came into its own like never before. The initial confusion completely disappeared and he owned his status as the father who wanted to give his daughter the best life. Guru’s decision to change his identity and turn his life around completely so that Mariam could have a ‘normal’ family life had to be the biggest sacrifice yet which showed this character’s strength like never before. On the one hand, there is Sattar as a father and on the other hand, we have Fakhra (Zhalay Sarhadi) who does not have the same courage as Guru.
Guru Has More Strengths than Weaknesses
I must admit that Guru gradually grew on me. The first two episodes were somewhat repetitive and I did not fall in love with the protagonist instantly. However, Guru finally took off with its 4th episode and completely won me over with the 5th one. Although Guru’s script is not as meaningful or solid as it could have been considering how different the topic is overall, it still has a great deal going for it. The positive aspects of the drama outweigh the weaknesses. The fact that this drama has been made with the right frame of mind and a clean heart reflects in its characters and the main plot. Therefore, the writer definitely gets full marks for trying his best to tell this story without focusing on the commercial element. However, some of the scenes in the first few episodes in particular could have been more crisp and the other track involving Zhalay Sarhadi does not have an appeal. Some of the get-ups also are not as realistic and convincing.
Even with all these flaws, there is so much about Guru that is positive, uplifting, meaningful, and heart-warming. This drama does not only break stereotypes but also plays an important role in redefining those real-life gurus and Surrayas who have been dehumanized by society. After watching this drama, I am certain, many people will look at intersex individuals in a different way. The fact that the writer has managed to achieve this objective without showing these characters as victims is what truly impressed me.
The positive and important side characters in the story are presented on-screen in such a way that their positivity reflects through their actions and not through their dialogues alone, as is the case in many dramas. Professor and his wife help Guru because they are good-hearted individuals who consider Guru a friend and not because they feel for him. They are also his mentors who never questioned Guru’s ways until they felt that this way of life would impact Maryam.
Then there is Imam sahib who does not judge Guru and points him in the right direction without being preachy. I loved his dialogues about the equality of the human race irrespective of gender or identity. These positive characters which are Guru’s support system give the message of inclusivity in such a subtle yet effective manner. Guru’s relationship with Suraya is heart-warming. Together, they are like a set of parents who would do anything required to make Maryam’s life very different from their own. All these characters are the life and soul of this drama and the best thing about it.
Bijli and Kashish have their own agendas right from the beginning. Although, the actors playing the roles are doing a phenomenal job just like the one playing Suraya’s role but these characters and their scenes have not been my favorite simply because their scenes have been repetitive and the characters are not grey.
Ali Rehman Khan – Take a Bow
This is the first time ever that Ali Rehman Khan decided to experiment and I must commend him for having the confidence to choose a character that isn’t only unconventional but also daring. He definitely stepped out of his comfort zone and did not hold back while performing this character. Honestly speaking, it took me a while to accept him in this role at first but after watching the recent episode, I must say that Ali Rehman has totally outdid himself. He was especially impressive in scenes covering his love and affection for Maryam. His body language in the interview scene was priceless. Ali Rehman deserves tons of appreciation for taking this step and for giving this character his best.
Final Remarks
Guru is not faultless but it is definitely the kind of drama that restores your faith in Pakistani drama makers. It has a different and appealing storyline, some beautifully written characters and connections, and quite a few impressive performances. Guru redefines the concept of love and humanizes those individuals whose feelings are usually discredited or unrecognized. Guru speaks for those who do not have a voice and gives them an identity that many of us can relate to. Guru’s story deserves your attention and might just win you over if you sit through the first two episodes.

Sources claim that Geo television has earned approximately 1 billion rupees from the YouTube views. The Independent Urdu website said that the channel has earned a huge amount from Tere Bin. The YouTube sources say that the worth of the views varies, if people are watching the show from Western countries, the channels make more money but if they are watching from Pakistan or India, they make less money. The sources also claim that the entertainment content gets more views and more earnings than the news and current affairs content. According to research, Geo earned an estimated 3.6 million dollars from this play.
The source also gave an example of a vlogger to check Tere Bin earnings, the source says that a vlogger from Islamabad earned 2484 dollars from one of his videos which gained 1.8 million views on YouTube which means Geo TV approximately earned 3.6 million dollars which are 1billion Pakistani rupees. A well-known Pakistani podcaster Talha Ahad of TCM also confirmed that Geo might have earned around 36 million dollars from Tere Bin after insane numbers of views. It is to be remembered that Khuda Aur Mohabbat 3 is still ahead in terms of YouTube views on Geo TV.
The above mentioned numbers are just based on the estimation given by the YouTubers. Geo TV hasn’t talked about the earnings yet. The channel hasn’t given any official numbers or information about drama’s earnings.

Pakistani drama makers have been focusing a great deal on the monetary aspect of making dramas more than any other for quite some time now. Gone are the days when dramas were made solely for entertaining the viewers. Also, the writers also do not have the same liberty to experiment and express the way they did back in the days when dramas were not used solely for the purpose of earning revenue.
New ‘Trend’ of Stretching Dramas
There was a time when once the script was written and the drama was recorded, it was a done deal. These dramas used to go on air at a certain assigned time and they used to come off air according to the initial plan. However, things changed drastically in the past decade. The producers realized that once they hook the viewers onto a drama, they could easily prolong it and earn more money instead of ending it while people were still loving it! So, now the latest trend is to make people fall in love with a drama, its story, and most importantly the characters and then to do whatever is needed to stretch the story. This is often done at the expense of the story and people fall out of love with the drama they loved watching.
Since the producers continue to get the viewership because people want to find out how a certain drama will end, the sponsors keep on paying them and as a consequence, the dramas are dragged to the limit. In order to drag dramas, certain tactics are used. Sometimes, the edited scenes are added, flashback scenes are a favorite as well, and at other times, the writer is asked to write new episodes and the cast is called in to shoot these episodes! Desperate times call for desperate measures! Because what could be more important for a producer than some extra monetary incentives?
Tere Bin’s Success – a Blessing or a Curse?
Tere Bin was an instant success. This drama broke all previous records and with every passing episode, its fan following skyrocketed. Wahaj Ali and Yumna Zaidi’s on-screen couple got unprecedented love and appreciation from the viewers. The producers obviously marketed this success, which they could surely not predict. Now the real question here is whether this success was a blessing or a curse. The honest answer is that while it has been a blessing for everyone involved, it turned into a curse for the viewers!
While the producers celebrated this success and made the most of it by prolonging the drama, the actors got more modeling projects and attention than ever from the media. Every week the viewers were frustrated by the sloppy writing and twists in the story that was illogical. The writer was obviously asked to prolong the story since the drama put not just the actors but even the producer in the limelight like never before. Then, there were also so many such episodes which relied on flashback scenes more than any other.
Therefore, a drama that was loved because of its characterizations and performances became the talk of the town for all the wrong reasons. Scenes were deleted and added without thinking about continuity and every week there were more scenes from the previous episode than tangible developments in the story.
Setting The Wrong Precedent
Tere Bin was definitely not the first popular drama that became a victim to the greed of the producers but it was definitely the first drama after Mere Pass Tum Ho that literally became a phenomenon. The producers could have gracefully ended this drama without turning fans into haters but they did not only unnecessarily drag the story and ruin it but they also blamed the fan following for it! The producer blatantly said that Tere Bin fans did not want the drama to go off air and simply discredited all the logical criticism.
Unfortunately, by doing so and by dragging the drama with absolutely no regard for logic or popular opinion, Tere Bin producers proved that anyone could get away with all this. I say this because the viewership of the drama did not lessen but with each controversy, it roped in even more viewership. It would be safe to say that Tere Bin producers set the wrong precedent by cashing in on its popularity in this manner. The leading actors who are seasoned and intelligent performers also played along which makes matters even worse. Tere Bin’s team proved that as long as the viewers continue to watch a drama, it really does not matter the amount of criticism it gets. So in others words badnaam agar honge tu kya naam na ho ga!
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, Tere Bin started off on a strong note and continued to be so for many weeks. However, its popularity led the producers to cash in on the ratings. The drama overstayed its welcome without any doubt. A drama that could have been remembered for so many good reasons will now be remembered for being controversial, illogical, and dragged to the limit! We just hope that the producer of the drama does not get even more confidence to pull another Tere Bin on the viewers after this venture.

Th news of anyone’s demise is always sad and makes one think about how temporary life is but news of a suicide often send shockwaves through society. A person apparently successful in personal as well as professional life committing suicide is enough to rattle anyone and the whole society often enters into a deep depression if something like that happens. A similar news has just been reported on the Pakistani media that the owner of PSL franchise Multan Sultans and the brother of famous politician Jahangir Khan Tareen, Alamgir Khan Tareen has committed suicide.
Alamgir shot himself in the head and he left a note revealing that he was suffering from a disease and that is why he was ending his life. Jahangir Tareen has reportedly confirmed his brother’s suicide according to Geo News Urdu. Alamgir’s friends and family were not aware of his disease.
He was single and was all set to marry his fiance this December. He took his own life today at his residence in Gulberg, Lahore at the age of 63. Police will visit the scene and then they will be able to give any clear statement.

The first few episodes of the drama focused on the strong and sensitive side of Sattar. Later on, we were introduced to an individual who could keep friendships and was great at solving problems. The most recent episode was the best because Guru’s character came into its own like never before. The initial confusion completely disappeared and he owned his status as the father who wanted to give his daughter the best life. Guru’s decision to change his identity and turn his life around completely so that Mariam could have a ‘normal’ family life had to be the biggest sacrifice yet which showed this character’s strength like never before. On the one hand, there is Sattar as a father and on the other hand, we have Fakhra (Zhalay Sarhadi) who does not have the same courage as Guru.
Bijli and Kashish have their own agendas right from the beginning. Although, the actors playing the roles are doing a phenomenal job just like the one playing Suraya’s role but these characters and their scenes have not been my favorite simply because their scenes have been repetitive and the characters are not grey.
