Recently, Khaled Anam made an appearance in the podcast Off The School in which he talked about the message and essence of the Holy month of Muharram.
Talking about it, he said, “What are we doing during Muharram? Noha is being played at full volume, and you are acting and giving expressions. Boys are sitting, eating gutka and tobacco, pretending to grieve—as if it’s some kind of performance. It has turned into a festival. You may not have added music in your Noha but you’ve added base and rhythm through your vocals—it’s the same thing. Why are you doing all of this? Just so people can criticize and say, “This is what Shias are like”? You are a Noha Khuwan, yet you’re acting and creating sets—as if Muharram is an event for you. You release a Noha album that sounds like a song. Try to feel it. Take the message you’re supposed to be delivering through Noha. A netizen wrote, “Religion is a full-fledged business all over the world. The more Masala you will put in, the more profit you will get from it.” Another wrote, “That’s the kind of message we need to hear more often. It’s so important to remember the true meaning of Karbala and Ashura.” Another stated, “Somewhere in this commercialization of a sacred month, we have lost the real meaning and essence of Karbala.” Many were not happy with Khaled Anam’s opinion, saying, “Criticizing others is the easiest thing in the world. If every person corrects themselves, society will improve.
