Recently, Nadeem Baig gave an exclusive interview to journalist Ambreen Fatima, where he opened up about the downfall of the Pakistani film industry and also responded to questions regarding the resemblance between films and dramas in Pakistan.
Talking about it, Nadeem Baig said, “It is because all the legendary filmmakers have passed away. Now, the people who are making films come from television. At least they are making films, but you all know what has happened to our industry. Cinemas have closed, studios have shut down, the entire film environment has disappeared. We lack facilities, resources, and work opportunities. We should still be thankful that people are doing whatever they can within their capacity.”
While discussing the downfall, Nadeem Baig said, “The major reason for the decline is that we went through a partition and lost a big market in East Pakistan. After that, studios began to vanish. Besides this, there are no film academies in Pakistan, and ticket prices have become too expensive. Our main audience was the lower-middle class, who used to visit cinemas for entertainment, but now they cannot afford it. We have talent—we only need to utilize it in the right way.”
He further added, “The studios have been shut down and turned into commercial areas. The entire atmosphere has changed. It is saddening to see that there are no more studios, no activity, and films are barely being made. Only Evernew Studio has somewhat maintained its original shape.”

Many times, the dramas either become such big hits that fans demand a sequel for them or their stories end in such a cliffhanger that they demand another instalment.

Suno Chanda
Suno Chanda was a game-changer for Pakistani dramas. Starring a fresh lead pairing of Farhan Saeed and Iqra Aziz, the drama not only became a blockbuster hit, but it also started a trend of Ramadan special dramas. The show was such a huge hit that Hum TV came out with a second season. The second season ended with a cliffhanger where Arsal and Ajiya were going abroad for her studies. There have always been calls for a third season, and the cast wanted a third one to be shot abroad. The writer Saima Akram Chaudhary will also be interested, and fans look forward to another instalment whenever it comes out.
Kabli Pulao
Kabli Pulao is another Pakistani drama that took the audience by storm. The love story between two individuals with a huge age gap, and who did not even speak each other’s language, was not something anyone expected. It was sweet, relatable, and took the fans on a ride. The ending was great and poetic, but at the same time abrupt. A sequel for such a couple would be lovely, as fans would be able to see more from their side and how they lived together moving forward in life.
Qarz e Jaan
Qarz e Jaan was a layered story. Many themes were discussed in the show, including the consequences of bad parenting. What ended up becoming a winner in the show was the track of Ammar Bakhtiyar, played by Nameer Khan. He goes to prison for his crimes. A spin-off about his story and rehabilitation will be something many would love to watch. The track of Nashwa and Burhan also ended abruptly, and fans would love to see how they fared in life.
Ehd e Wafa
Ehd e Wafa was a Pakistani drama targeted at youth. It was different from just love stories. The show explored career choices, ambitions, and similar themes. College life was also shown, which people loved at the time. A second series with similar themes can still catch eyeballs. Yes, the preachiness could be controlled, but this is definitely something a young audience would like to watch on their screens.
Alif
Alif, written by Umera Ahmed, was a masterpiece starring Sajal Aly and Hamza Ali Abbasi. With a story revolving around spirituality and deep and interesting characters, this is one of the best dramas to come out of Pakistani television. The show ends with Qalb e Momin deciding to move back to Turkey to continue his father and grandfather’s legacy. Momina Sultan, however, remains back, and it would be lovely to see how they progress in life if a second season is made. It will be great to see the characters again, even if for a mini-series.
Duniyapur
Duniyapur was another unique Pakistani drama revolving around themes of lawlessness and revenge. The show had a big cast, and everyone did their best in their roles. Numan Ijaz and Manzar Sehbai made this drama a top-notch revenge story. The main lead characters, played by Khushhal Khan and Ramsha Khan, fled in the end. Sami Khan played the police officer who would be chasing them once again. This is another show where fans demanded a second season. It will be great to watch how Shahmeer and Anaa actually walked out alive.
Serial Killer
Serial Killer was a Pakistani drama that aired on Green TV. Starring Saba Qamar as the lead, this was yet another refreshing change for Pakistani television. A senior police officer, trying to catch a serial killer while she herself suffers from PTSD, was a good story. This show ended with one of the biggest cliffhangers in the history of recent Pakistani dramas. It should be rebooted, and a conclusion needs to be given to the show.
Mere Paas Tum Ho
Mere Paas Tum Ho is a cult classic. The show broke viewership records, and fans were on the edge of their seats to see what would happen to Danish. In the end, we got Rumi and Mehwish, both alive, and a huge amount of money left behind by Danish. Since Danish is dead, one can not expect a sequel from his point of view. But a spin-off with Rumi as lead wouldn’t be a bad idea. The idea also gained limelight when Sunn Mere Dil came out. Fans thought Wahaj Ali’s character could be Rumi’s future, but the show diverted way too much from being sensible. A real sequel from Rumi’s point of view will be a great idea for fans and makers both.
Khaas
Khaas is a Pakistani drama that focuses on emotional abuse in a marriage. This topic has not been addressed enough in the past. Starring Sanam Baloch, Ali Rehman Khan and Haroon Shahid, this was a great watch. A season 2 with similar and important themes explored would be great to watch.
Dil Nawaz
Wahaj Ali and Neelam Muneer starred in this horror Pakistani drama. They both did a great job, and it was one drama in the horror genre that actually worked. After many twists and turns, the drama ended with a hybrid jin-human child, which Dil Nawaz takes with her. A sequel with the baby would be a treat to watch for fans. Wahaj is all set to star in a horror comedy now. Maybe we can watch him in Dil Nawaz 2.
Durr e Shehwar
Durr e Shehwar is a Pakistani drama that every young woman who is fed up with Tere Bin and Ishq Murshid fantasy would love to watch. It is a show so close to reality that it would make you uncomfortable. The stark reality of what women go through in our society was beautifully portrayed in the drama. This is one story which should have a remake version and viewers will be debating on every scene every week.
Parizaad
Parizaad written by Hashim Nadeem took the audience by storm. It was a global hit and fans loved the story of an underdog. People were able to see their own inner Parizaad on screens with this one. There have been talks about a possible sequel by Hashim Nadeem and fans want to see that day coming soon. Ahmed Ali Akbar reprising the iconic character will be a treat for the viewers.

Senior PTV actor Anwar Ali passed away after a prolonged illness at the age of 71. He was best known for his roles in dramas such as Khudabaksh, Nishani, Andhera Ujala, Ababeel, Home Sweet Home, Comedy Theatre, Sona Chaandi, and many others. He was also a renowned stage actor who gained fame for his excellent comic timing, expressive acting, and body language. At the peak of his career, he left showbiz and devoted himself to a religious life.
Anwar Ali had been suffering from kidney disease and paralysis. He also suffered two strokes. According to his family, he was admitted to a hospital in Lahore on Sunday after his condition worsened. Despite medical efforts, he could not recover and passed away. His funeral will be offered after his daughter arrives from abroad and will be held in Model Town, Lahore.

She revealed that a man named Hassan Zahid who is from Lahore has been harassing and stalking her. She alleged that he came to her house and forcefully took her away in his car.
