Pakistani girl celebrating divorce goes viral. Marriage is considered the strongest family institution in a Muslim society, especially in Pakistan. In the South Asian and Muslim countries, most marriages work well due to their strong family culture. Divorce is generally considered unacceptable for both men and women in these societies. Spouses often choose to resolve their issues rather than opting for divorce because ending a marriage is challenging for the families involved.
Recently, a video of a girl celebrating her divorce has been circulating on Facebook. In the video, she cuts a cake with the caption “Happy Divorce” written on it. She also cuts her Nikah dupatta and embraces her future as a single woman. Here is the link to the video:
The video is getting severe public backlash. The social media users are of the view that divorce is a very painful experience and it should not be celebrated like that, rather it should be condemned. A social media user wrote, ‘even if she was in an unhealthy relationship, the divorce should not be celebrated because such celebrations degrade a pious institution like marriage which protects the rights of women and is the basis of every civilized societies’. A social media user wrote, ‘maybe she needs to get married again to restore her faith in marriage and Allah”. Many said that the girl is just pretending to be happy but she looks sad and lost.
