Shafi Muhammad Shah passed away on November 17, 2007, at the age of 58. At the time of his death, he left behind a loving family, including his wife, daughters, and sons. While sharing the memory, Shafi Muhammad Shah’s daughter wrote, “On her wedding day, my mother didn’t like her bridal makeup, so she came back home, washed it all off, and my khala had to redo it. My father, meanwhile, was so relaxed that he reached the venue before most of his own family and guests. My mother’s uncle, who was in the army and had that wonderfully commanding personality, looked at him and said something along the lines of, ‘Why are you here all by yourself?’ It was one of those unintentionally hilarious moments. The groom had arrived so early that he was practically waiting for everyone else. The little girl my father is holding is my mother’s khala’s daughter. He became so close to my mother’s family in such a short time that it already felt like he had always been one of them. This was 1984. Life was far from perfect, but there was a simplicity to human connection that feels increasingly rare today. I hope we find our way back — back to honesty over deceit, commitment over convenience, respect over pride, real conversations over endless distractions, and meeting simply because we wanted to be together over a cup of chai.
