In the finale, Piya, played by Durefishan Saleem, chose an independent path after Sanwal reunited her with Aliyar, whom she loved. Piya refused to marry Aliyar, saying, “I want to become independent and successful after completing my education.” The ending was not well received by fans. However, the drama still garnered high viewership and TRPs.
Durefishan Saleem has recently defended the ending of Sanwal Yaar Piya. Taking to her Instagram, Dure wrote, “Obsessed with the genre of women choosing themselves — not marriage. And as for love, if it’s true, it always finds its way back. Kudos to director Danish Nawaz.” Read her post.

Durefishan Saleem is facing criticism for praising the ending. Fans are of the view that if she had to choose her own path, then why did she become a bride in the first place? One fan wrote, “The genre is good, but you didn’t need to become a bride for this.” Another wrote, “Calling off the wedding after the Barat arrives is the new narrative being promoted in a subtle way.” Another commented, “Why use Sanwal if you had to choose your own path in the end?” A user wrote, “So you mean choosing friendship over Nikah, haram over halal?” Another social media user wrote that she shared and praised the ending herself because no one else did.
