To the question of host, “to which director and actor you would say, ‘don’t cry over spilt milk’. He said, “I would take name of Ali Hassan, I am taking Ali’s name because he is my friend and he is like a family to me, Ali and I did a project named Meeraas, we have learnt a lesson from that drama that you cant do all the experiments in one project, we have learnt that a ‘Hero’ of the drama can’t afford any experiment with looks. He should look good on the screen. We did all the experiments in that drama including bad hair styling of hero, awkward speaking style of an actor and other things. The drama didn’t do that well but still if people come to me and say, ‘your drama Meeraas was good’, I don’t believe them and say, ‘get yourself checked’.
Meeras drama was a Big Bang Production presentation which had a stellar cast including Saboor Aly, Sawaira Nadeem, Mohsin Abbas Haider and Fahad Sheikh. Mohsin played the character of Haris who had two wives. Sawaira Nadeem and Saboor Aly played his wife’s characters. Qavi Khan’s performance was appreciated in Meeraas as father of JahanArra (Sawaira Nadeem).
Ushna Shah and Adeel Hussain made a great pair in the hit drama Aakhir Kab Tak. They were both appreciated for their strong performances and for choosing a project so different from others and they are all set again to work in a drama bringing some exciting news for their fans.

Pakistani dramas are doing great as far as TRPs and YouTube views are concerned but the content has taken a major hit in the last few years. Mostly the dramas are made from the same love triangles and sisters rivalry formulas and there is a lot of toxicity involved in 99% of the scripts. A lot as been said about this problem with scripts in the last few years but nothing has been done.
Ali Safina is an actor who has been a part of the industry for years and he has given some very strong performances. He was a guest on Fuchsia where he exposed the reality of many drama writers and how scripts are being written by content teams and why is the situation so bad.
He said that many writers have teams and they just slap name on different scripts after refurbishing old stories. Moreover the drama is shooting when 7-8 episodes are in and the writer is never given proper time or enough money to deliver a compact script. He also shared that writers are not paid good money and they give bad scripts in return. He added that same writers have written good dramas for Green Entertainment as they were paying good money.
Mahira Khan is one of the biggest stars in Pakistan in both films and drama industries. The actress has always won hearts and she is an international star who people have seen being loved all over the world. She now works in a small number of projects depending on if she finds them convincing enough. This recent episode of Neem had the most important and grimmest development to its credit. The promo of this episode clearly suggested that Baba Jan was going to exit the story but the way this exit was covered, had to be the highlight of tonight’s episode. The build-up leading to the actual scene was not just convincing but also engaging and suspenseful. Karamat’s panic attack after he did the unimaginable showed Syed Jibran’s range as a brilliant performer. Unfortunately, Syed Jibran only gets to showcase his remarkable acting skills in negative roles. However, I do feel that even though he is constantly cast in such characters, he always manages to bring something new to the table. He is not like other actors who are typecast because every time his character tells a different story and his performances always stand out. Tonight’s episode belonged to Syed Jibran who took the task at hand in his stride and actually managed to make the viewers relate to his character at a time when all we should have been feeling was hate and contempt. With this episode, the story is bound to shift in a completely different direction.
Baba Jan’s Exit
Right from the opening scenes till the last one, the focus was entirely on Karamat more than any other character. He decided to confront his father after he found out about the legal work that was in process. Yousuf Bashir Qureshi’s character and its dynamics are a lot like that of the one he played in Kuch Ankahi. Especially Baba Jan’s relationship with his son is more or less the same. Their scenes together remind me of the father/son scenes from Kuch Ankahi. Both the confrontation scenes were well written and executed. The camera work was also impressive.
These scenes, more than ever before, highlighted the difference in thoughts and perspectives of these two individuals. While Karamat was fully convinced that he deserved a share in his father’s assets more than anyone else, his father clearly did not feel that he was worthy or that it was the right thing to do. Ye jaidad aap ke pas amanat hey aap is mein khyanat nahin kr saktesummed up Karamat’s stance in one sentence. Mein jab chahun jis ko chahoon jis ke naam chahun zameen kr sakta hu was a reply that said a great deal about Baba Jan’s character. I guess we all know now where Karamat’s sternness comes from because Baba Jan had that side to his personality as well but because he was a philanthropist, it became his strength. It also became clear why despite all the wealth, Karamat’s lifestyle was not grand. Baba Jan lived a simple life and obviously did not give Karamat enough to afford a luxurious lifestyle.
Baba Jan’s positive character was translated on screen with the utmost precision. I was not ready or pleased when I found out last week that we will see this character make an exit soon. However, after watching this episode, I am really satisfied with the way it exited and I can also see how important this exit is for the plot to move forward in a different direction. Karamat and Baba Jan’s first scene together and its aftermath was faultless. That is when Karamat figured out that his father was bent on acting on his decision and his father knew he needed to speed things up otherwise Karamat will try to hinder him.
Zimal’s Track
Zimal was shown working towards the betterment of the educational system and this time around her focus was on the importance of extra-curricular activities. I must say that there were quite a few dialogues in this episode that came across as unnecessarily preachy. Apart from the reasons elaborated on by Zimal in this particular scene, a few of Shazil’s brother’s dialogues did not go well with his character. With Baba Jan’s death as Zimal said she was truly an orphan now because he was not just a father figure but also a mentor. Mawra Hocane did complete justice to all the scenes showing the sense of loss and even helplessness that Zimal felt. Shazil’s dialogues have been too plain especially when considering the fact that some of the other dialogues are well-written and ‘heavy’ at times. The words he uttered to console Zimal were too run-of-the-mill. Even Ashhad’s friend’s dialogue had more depth than Shazil’s character. This was the 3rd episode and even now Shazil’s character comes across as too plain and uninteresting.
Ashhad’s track revolves around Zimal; all his scenes have been more or less the same. Therefore, the only attraction in Zimal’s character is Zimal herself, these two men, so far, do not have much to contribute. On the other hand, Karamat seems to be the strongest contender since he has single-handedly changed the course of Zimal’s track. I hope that Ashhad and Shazil’s characters will have more to offer in the upcoming episodes.
Final Remarks
Overall, Neem is definitely the kind of drama that gives you a reason to tune into it every week. I must say that the first two episodes were far more meaningful and impactful than this one. If it weren’t for Syed Jibran’s mind-blowing performance in this episode, it would not have been as engaging as it was. The writer deserves the credit as well for penning down this latest development so well especially because for the first time we got to witness a villain feeling remorse and guilt in this manner. The need for self-preservation and greed for wealth, however, outweighed his troubled conscience. The cinematography in this recent episode was just as impressive as it was in the previous episodes.

Pakistan is not a country that makes too may stars. Only politics and cricket have been two predominant fields that have brought popularity to people largely and these are the only two topics always dominating the media. Cricket is also the only sport given a chance o survive in this country and everyone wants to get into it. Many famous cricketers have been from Pakistan and Moeen Khan is one such name. He has also served at various senior positions after retirement and his son Azam Khan has followed in his footsteps and we see him play the PSL and in many other leagues all over the world.
Azam Khan was a guest on Hasna Mana Hai and he shared some insights into his life. Azam shared that he used to be a little arrogant when he started going to his father’s cricket academy and consequently his father banned him from entering the academy. So he went to Rashid Latif’s academy and still considers him his mentor.
Azam also talked about the criticism he has faced for his weight and because he got into cricket due to his father’s position. He has been called Parchi and several other names but he kept fighting the battle anad the criticism gave him motivation.
Fathers are a blessing who cannot be replaced by anything else in the world. Gunah’s first episode aired this week but unfortunately, it did not get the attention or appreciation it deserved. This first episode was fast-paced, brilliantly directed and the performances couldn’t have been more phenomenal. The script was also crisp and entertaining. It has been a long time since I watched the first episode of a drama that was so faultless and well-put-together. In short, I am completely sold after watching this first episode and eagerly looking forward to the next one. I just hope that Gunah will have a better ending than the recently aired mini-series Jurm.
Perfection
The first episode of Gunah started with scenarios showing how things were in the present time, three weeks after the actual incident around which the plot revolves. Therefore, the actual mystery will unravel as the story progresses and as SHO Sabiha (Rabia Butt) investigates Gul Noor (Juggan Kazim) and Ahmed’s (Ali Raza) disappearance. What I loved about this opening scene was the director and producers’ faith in their script. They did not rely on star power at all in order to make the opening scenes more enticing. The focus was actually on people who do not even have a stake in the actual plot. However, this was a powerful way to open the episode since it piqued my curiosity and when Malik Hayat Khan (Sarmad Khoosat) made an appearance, I was certain that we were in for a good ride! Sarmad Khoosat had a definite screen presence in this opening scene; everything about this scene was on point. The camerawork, background score, and performances could not have been better.
While Sarmad Khoosat rightfully deserves tons of praise for his powerful performance in this first episode, I would like to appreciate the brilliant performance by Fahad Hashmi who played Malik Hayat’s right-hand man. He was brilliant in Jo Bichar Gaye and in this first episode, he was equally well suited for the role he played. Fahad is the kind of actor who makes every single scene count and by doing so he proves that sometimes your acting skills can make your character stand out more than it would otherwise.
After Malik Hayat Khan’s powerful introduction, the viewers were shifted to a completely different situation. Ahmed’s mother was shown pleading in front of the SHO who clearly did not care and it was also evident that the entire police force at the time was being controlled by Malik Hayat. This was another brilliantly put-together scene that conveyed so much about the situation at hand. The timing of the transfer letter and SHO’s reaction went to show how things were being operated. This was such an important scene since it laid the foundation for the change the viewers were going to witness as soon as Sabiha took charge. Nabi Buksh played superbly by Faiz Chauhan who impressed us with his performance in Dil Na Umeed Tu Nahin was another interesting character. Faiz Chauhan’s performance was flawless throughout.
Other than Sarmad Khoosat, Rabia Butt’s entry, and performance were the most impressive. Sabiha is a one-of-a-kind character that Rabia Butt owned right from the get-go. It was great watching her in yet another powerful role after Pehli Si Mohabbat. It was also truly refreshing watching a woman playing such a strong lead. Rabia Butt made Sabiha’s scenes come alive on screen; that is the magic of great casting! It brings every single character to life on screen. Sabiha’s professional and headstrong attitude was translated on screen with the utmost precision by Rabia Butt. Every single expression was spot on and her body language was impressive.
The scenes covering Gul Noor’s interactions with her son and Ahmed were intelligently woven into the story. All of them gave incomplete information which kept the mystery alive effortlessly. Gul Noor’s parents were shown as naïve and simple. There was clearly a huge class difference between the two families.
Gul Meher (Saba Qamar) is definitely more than what meets the eye. She and Malik are clearly hiding something but it remains to be seen who is responsible for the ‘gunah’ and what they actually did to Gul Noor and Ahmed. Gul Meher’s dialogues about mohabbat suggested that she was the kind of person who would do whatever it took to get the person she loved. The main idea of the drama was perhaps encapsulated in these dialogues. Gul Meher and Malik both played the victims but it was quite obvious that they were responsible for whatever happened to Gul Meher. Saba Qamar is an ace actress who never disappoints.
Final Remarks
It isn’t very often that Pakistani drama viewers get to watch crime thrillers and it is even a bigger rarity that the makers are able to do justice to the genre. Lately, we got to see multiple mini-series with more or less the same concept as Gunah. Out of all of these, I felt that this first episode was the most impactful. This first episode of Gunah promised a power-packed crime thriller. All the actors are the perfect choice for playing their respective roles. The series does not only have some of the best lead actors but the supporting actors are equally impressive. The director, editor, and the person incharge of the background score have done complete justice to the script. If you did not watch this first episode, I would highly recommend it, especially to those viewers who want to support Pakistani dramas that are out of the box. This entire episode had a cinematic feel because of the cinematography and the editing. At the same time, everything looked ‘real’ on-screen.
