0

The  young and extremely talented actress Sumbal Iqbal has establish herself in the industry in a quite short span of time. Sumbal has not been given much projects to show her versatility and have always been offered emotionally intense roles. Some of the projects of Sumbal are worth mentioning, Mere Khuwab Reza Reza and Roag. Sumbul gave a brilliant performance in Roag and has received a lot of appreciation for it. Lately Sumbal is working in the drama Parizaad being aired on Urdu1.

Here are the few pictures of the gorgeous lady from her latest shoot. Sumbal has taken a very different and western look for her shoot and I must say she is looking super cool.

Have a look at the pictures and do let us know how you find them.

Be Aib- Episode 9 – 12 Shadi ke side effects

The past four episodes had a lot happening- Taimoor & Inaya’s wedding, Tooba’s helplessness and ultimately Sadaf’s big win with a grand wedding for Tooba & Fawad- there were all of two extra guests present! Sadaf gave detailed instructions to Tooba about keeping secrets and more pointless banter but Tooba moved from one master to another and spilt the beans about Taimoor and how her mother got in the way of her happiness. Hearing Tooba’s tragic tale, Fawad decided he needed to let the cat out of the bag and disclosed the details of his first wedding. Tooba behaved sensibly- okay no, I’m giving her far too much credit here. She thought it was acceptable since she now does everything Fawad tells her. But Sadaf isn’t happy with Fawad anymore since she’s cuckoo and her useless husband can’t seem to muster the courage to give her a much needed jolt and snap her out of her hysteria.

Sadaf was unhappy that Fawad didn’t obey her the way she expected and that Tooba was getting comfortable with him. She didn’t like seeing Tooba voicing her thoughts as she felt insulted and hated losing control. Sadaf started meddling in their lives which made Fawad think that for his marriage to work, they need some space from Sadaf. They made plans to relocate but since Tooba can’t think for herself to take any decisions, she procrastinated and that gave Sadaf time to snoop further and she found out that Fawad was previously married. The whole text message scene was sickening- but then nothing about Sadaf surprises me anymore. Sadaf’s determined to get Tooba divorced and will start seeking another perfect match for her supposedly perfect daughter… sigh…

Even though Taimoor and Inaaya are married, they are far from a couple and only put up an act in front of their families so as not to upset them. The doctor who confirmed that Taimoor will forever be subjected to living like a handicap had a revelation-Taimoor can recover and walk again! All he needed was some TLC and Inaaya provided buckets of that. Shahana and her mister are forever stuck in their living rooms dressed up like they’re going somewhere. The monotony is really irritating. I only wish they’d teach their beloved bahu how to dress up.

Out of all the characters, I must admit I actually think Safi and his wife Aisha are the absolute worst- don’t get me wrong Sadaf is outright evil but these two are deplorable. I can’t help but wonder why we are constantly made to feel like we should empathize with them- why??? Especially when we hear their private conversations where they hope Shahana APA won’t ask for money back and they are hoping to buy a new home. Safi admitted he’s made countless mistakes, severed his ties with Sadaf over a jointly owned property, caused Shahana Apa’s husband to suffer huge financial losses yet they’re the ones we should be rooting for? Their constant pity parties are revolting and I can’t seem to find a single good thing to say about them. These are the kinds of relatives who harbour jealousy and feel they are entitled to a share of their wealth. For some odd reason, the writer seems to have oodles of sympathy towards them and has ensured they get their happy ending- having their daughter married off where they had hoped, having their son become an overnight business tycoon who’s now setting up a base in Dubai and finally having a brand new home, they seem to have their lives sorted.

Why do I continue watching this? I honestly don’t know. Maybe I enjoy torturing myself with stupidity every now and then to test my tolerance…

Dukh Sukh- Maafi- Search for forgiveness

I came across the OST of Dukh Sukh and was blown away by the ensemble cast. The soundtrack is haunting yet catchy and I am a sucker for a good tune. As I sat down to watch it, I realized that it is a series of standalone short stories that would still be worth a watch since it’s a different concept from our usual dramas and soaps.

Dukhsukh aired on Urdu 1 under the banner of Real Entertainment- produced by Meraj Uddin and Ahsan Khan, directed by Sakina Sammo and written by Bee Gul, the first instalment was titled ” Maafi”. Karam (Resham) runs a tandoor from her home to make a living. Dressed in all black, Karam is still mourning the loss of her ex. In the dead of the night, she finds a wandering traveller (Rashid Farooqui) in her home who collapses in front of her. Karam feels obligated to nurse him back to health and seeks medicine from the village Hakeem. Her neighbour, Kausar warns her that the man is dying and is suffering from multiple ailments but Karam continues caring for him. She is engaged to Anu (Ahsan Khan) whose character is hugely inspired from his role in Udaari as Imtiyaaz. Anu is unemployed yet is full of himself and reminds Karam that she is lucky to be engaged to an eligible bachelor like him. Karam seems to be unaffected by Anu and isn’t too keen on marrying him- reminding him that her life won’t change as she’ll continue to be the breadwinner of the family.

Anu is furious when he finds out about the stranger living with Karam and throws a fit but Karam doesn’t budge. Karam listens to the stranger who is filled with regrets over the way he mistreated his wife. He shares his thoughts and breaks down every time. It seems he cried so hard it resulted in him losing his vision. The Hakeem tells Karam that the only thing keeping the man alive is the hope for forgiveness from his wife. The stranger has travelled far and wide in hopes of redemption.

Anu finally realizes that he will take responsibility and goes to the city in search of employment. Upon his return, he hands over his hard earned money to Karam and also a wedding dress he bought for her but he knows no matter what he does, Karam cannot be his as she is still married- the stranger is her ex who had mistreated and abused her because he was insecure and kicked her out after getting a second wife. Karam still harbours feelings for him which is why she tries to keep him alive but in the end she recites Surah Yaseen as she is content that his time has come.

I found the concept of this series very interesting and I liked how the episode played out. Resham was a good choice to play the role of Karam as she brings out this raw element needed for the role. Ahsan Khan was phenomenal as Imtiyaaz in Udaari but I felt he was repeating his performance so it didn’t have much of an impact. Rashid Farooqui is a natural and did justice to his role. Bee Gul has a unique style and I’ve loved two of her previous works- Talkhiyan and Pehchaan. The direction by Sakina Sammo was slick and the continuity was consistent. I look forward to seeing the next one and hope they keep it interesting.

Did you watch the first instalment? What are your thoughts?

Laaj Episodes 11 & 12 – Mein Baat Karoon Bari Sb Say?!

0

Seriously. I am amazed at how Jahanzeb has not managed to share his feelings with Bari Sb. Everyone seems to be passing the buck with Zainab hoping Jahanzeb will speak up or Shahzeb will refuse to marry her where Jahanzeb wants Zainab to say no to Bari Sb or hopes Shahzeb will. In the end only Shahzeb was able to voice his feelings and head out to take action but that failed too.

These two episodes focused on the seemingly inevitable marriage of Zainab and Shahzeb and Mannat’s ‘predicament’. Bari Sb thinks Zainab is interested in Shahzeb with her constant hints of not wanting to leave the haveli and given she does not like Alisha either, she feels that having Zainab marry Shahzeb would be a wonderful idea. Alas, nobody else shares her enthusiasm. Shahzeb tells Bari Sb he will not marry Zainab and prepares to leave but the emotional stunt that Bari Sb pulled had him weeping and falling to his knees and in that moment of weakness, she makes him promise to honor her words. I felt bad for Shahzeb then and wondered at Bari Sb’s mamta for she knows Shahzeb is unhappy with this match yet she resorts to such drastic measures to make him succumb. She further impresses upon him that he must appear to act that he is very happy with this match and it is what he wants. I know Bari Sb is ruthless but she always came across as a woman who loved her sons, niece and grandchild (well not too sure about the grandchild for her decisions regarding Mannat seem questionable to me, but oh well)!

pic1

Zainab and Jahanzeb are taken aback at this change in Shahzeb and Zainab even confronts him but Shahzeb stays true to his word. I know Bari Sb expects the ‘daughters of the haveli’ not to have any opinions but I wonder how awful could it be if Zainab said she wanted to marry Jahanzeb? Bari Sb thinks Jahanzeb is not a fitting match for Zainab since he is older and a widower so it would be unfair to Zainab. Also, her thoughts regarding what ‘people will think’ are contradicting her image of a woman who earlier tells another woman to throw out her worthless husband for she can earn her own living and must not put up with his nonsense. Bari Sb clearly does not practice what she preaches or does so selectively it seems.

Jahanzeb is another confused character. He has moments where in his mind he is passionately vowing to make up for all the misery he has put Zainab through and then he feels he is not good enough for her. I think it is his cowardice which prevents him from speaking up and in that sense maybe he is not deserving of her indeed!

Mujhay acha lagay ya bura, hona wohi hai jo meri kismet mein likha hai. Seems like Mannat is the only one who knows crying or having an opinion or feelings will not matter in this haveli. She seems to be a bit too easily resigned to have Bari Sb and others decide her fate but then given how Shahzeb’s situation where he tried to ‘do something’ was dealt with, then maybe she is not too far off the mark either! Bari Sb is planning to have Mannat’s baby aborted so she may rob Sikander of an heir but wants Zainab married off quickly too so that she is not ‘available’ as an offering to Dilawer anymore. This woman! Her scheming and ruthlessness knows no bounds. Sikander on the other hand is laying his own plans which failed when his plan to have Shahzeb killed fell through. It did however bring to the limelight our desi Charlie Chaplin who it seems is about to be caught out very soon!

pic2

The episode ends with wedding celebrations beginning for Zainab and Shahzeb. I watched these two episodes together so the pace was okay for me. But I feel by the next episode either Zainab should be married to Shahzeb and move the story forward or Jahanzeb finally speaks up (don’t see that happening though!). This drama is not the sort that has you glued to the screen but the colourful visuals, powerful acting by Asma Abbas and heartfelt performances by Zarnish Khan and Kamran Jillani have held my interest. I normally find Mirza Zain Baig’s acting lacking but the scene between him and Asma Abbas was done well and was convincing. I like Laaj but I am still waiting for that ‘punch’ in the storyline for so far there has been nothing out of the ordinary.

Next week’s preview shows Zainab taking matters into her own hands. Wonder where that will lead everyone. How did you all find these episodes? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Mein Sitara Episode 29 Review – Sitara’s Revenge

“Bojh sirf roti ka nahi hota, rooh ka bhi hota hai!” This episode of Mein Sitara showed that Sitara had been harboring grudges all these years and that was the main reason why she resorted to drugs and even with a running business and a daughter who valued her, she could not see the positive aspects of her life. All this time what she wanted more than anything else was an opportunity to get back at Illyas Khawaja for what he put her through. She failed to forgive and move on therefore what we saw in this recent episode was not a decision made by a mother but by a woman who wanted to take revenge. Pappu was once again the voice of reason, he continuously kept on giving Sitara reality checks but she refused to listen. She was not willing to let go of this golden opportunity and was being extremely selfish.

Falak’s character has been etched-out beautifully, she is the person Sitara once was when she too felt sheltered and loved. Falak is intelligent, practical, ambitious and loving. Anum Fayyaz has done complete justice to her character even though this is the first time she is playing a role like this one. Unfortunately, Sitara is exploiting her daughter’s love for her without thinking about how it might effect her. Apart from this twist in Sitara’s character, the other shocking twist was Illyas Khawaja’s change of heart. After losing a daughter who did not only have the same name as Falak but had similar interests too Illyas Khawaja feels he has found his daughter in Falak and wants to help her make her dreams come true. Sitara however thinks that Illyas Khawaja is interested in Falak in the same way he was interested in Sitara at one point and will not help her further her career. It was sad watching Sitara resort to such measures to take revenge from Illyas Khawaja. Even though she said to Pappu that Falak will never know that he was her father but later on she said that when he makes a move on her she will take Falak with her and go and confront him. Tipu Shah has been phenomenal as Pappu right from the beginning.

Sitara’s side of the story keeps on getting darker with every passing episode but Falak’s track keeps the drama from getting too depressing. Even after so many weeks the writer still has some shocking twists in store for the viewers which definitely have an impact every time. Also, Mein Sitara is still as unpredictable and enticing today as it was when it started, this is what makes this drama a success in my eyes. This was a picture perfect episode which put the story on a brand new track. The picture quality of Mein Sitara is always superb and the person incharge of the makeovers has done a brilliant job throughout. Illyas Khawaja really did look like he had been through a lot. Losing his daughter aged him more than anything else. The flashback scenes clearly suggested that he had a very strong bond with his daughter and the fact that she died in such a tragic manner while she was talking to him must have added to his grief. The actress playing Illyas Khawaja’s daughter was the only weak link in this episode.

In this episode the viewers did not only get to see a different side of Sitara’s character but we also saw a very different side of Illyas Khawaja’s character as well. Nauman Ijaz’s performance was faultless in tonight’s episode and this episode was directed skillfully too. The preview of the next episode showed Illyas Khawaja uttering those lines which the viewers have heard him saying many years back which made me wonder if my reading about Illyas Khawaja was wrong but all those scenes in which he kept on thinking about his daughter did suggest that Falak reminded him of his daughter. Also, the preview of the next episode showed Sitara getting frustrated because of the fact that Illyas Khawaja had not made a move on her daughter. It looks like Illyas Khawaja will unknowingly help his daughter make her dreams come true! Will Sitara forgive him then and move on? I am waiting to find out.

How many of you watched this episode? Do share your thoughts about it.

P.S. I have been terribly sick therefore I might not be able to post the reviews on time for a few days, please bear with me.

Shaan Sahid & Ali Zafar are “DOST” Again!

0

It was in an Award show in 2014 that Shaan bluntly passed comments on the Pakistani stars who were working across the border. He got little personal with Ali Zafar, while labeling all the artists as “cheap sell-outs”.

In the same show when Ali Zafar received the award ,in his speech he said that it was not right the way Shaan said about the artists working in India as “Sell outs”.

Ali Zafar also said, “We make excuses to hide our weaknesses, sometimes, in the name of patriotism, sometimes, in the name of other things. We should speak the truth and the time has come when the new generation should be told the truth.”

But now as we know that Ali has decided to do a Pakistani film, Shan has posted on his Facebook a very heart-warming post and its seems that both are friends again. Shan we are really proud of you the way you have welcomed Ali Zafar to the local film industry,

Sang e Marmar Episode 08 Review – Intense Yet Promising!

Ohkay so, isn’t it amazing that even before tuning to an episode, you know it is going to be intense & interesting? This is what I love about Sang e Marmar the most, that even before the episode begins, I know I am going to have a great time watching it. This drama is getting better & better & what makes me look forward to it the most is the fact that I know they have a lot left in store for us. In comparison to the previous episodes, this one was on a slower side but the precap has got me prepared for a happening episode next week, so I am at a happy place.

Torah finally convinced his sister Palwasha that he didn’t kill Gohar. Palwasha’s intuition wasn’t wrong & she did sense some sort of happiness that was surrounding Torah ever since Gohar died, but being a smooth talker that he is, Torah twisted the truth & presented it in front of Palwasha knowing that she won’t be able to doubt him ever again if he will bring his mother’s name in between. Yes, Torah on his own is right in saying that he did not kill Gohar, but in his heart, he knows he is the reason why Gohar is not alive anymore. At this point, Torah does feel content & happy but I have a feeling that this satisfaction will be short-lived & Torah will fall into deep pit, I am not too sure how Torah will dodge that bullet, but I am sure it will be an interesting journey.

Gulistan Khan is picking up the pieces after Gohar’s death & another thing that surfaced in this episode was his worry about Safiullah’s progeny. It actually makes me detest Gulistan a tad bit more because in stead of showing a little consideration towards Gullalai’s well being, just because he spotted Gullalai & Palwasha together, he assumed that they both will not have a problem sharing a husband. Gulistan Khan thinks the entire world revolves around him & everyone around him is his slave bound to follow his orders, that is why he didn’t even think for a second about what Torah or Palwasha might feel. Just because Torah has till date followed all his orders, Gulistan thinks he will sacrifice his sister’s happiness too. Gulistan’s insensitivity & inconsideration towards Gullalai reinforced the fact that he only thinks about himself & his sons; Gohar & Safiullah in particular & now when Gohar is no more, he has attached a bit more hope with Safiullah. Torah got to eavesdrop on that entire conversation & Gulistan has no idea what Torah can transpire & instigate. I actually find it amusing that Torah is present at all times & he is literally everywhere, it actually is in sync with his character since he is on a mission, it shows how he keeps his eyes & ears open at all times in order to prepare himself for the curveballs that might come his way.

It seemed like it was the first time Gulistan ever consulted with his wife, that is why she was taken aback by the fact that her husband was involving her in the matters concerning his favorite child Safiullah. In one of the previous reviews, I did mention that it seemed like Gulistan never allowed his wife to have a say in the upbringing of their sons, especially the elder ones so, in this episode it was validated by that single conversation. Gulistan Khan is so used to the idea of being the only decision maker that he never really felt the need to rely on his wife for a suggestion or an advice. I really like how every single time, they slightly touch on the fact that Gulistan Khan is well aware of his children’ nature & personalities, like he knew about Gohar & his activities, & this time around he clearly spoke about how Sherbano instigates negativity. Gulistan might be the worst human being alive for all the sins that he has committed & all of his wrongdoings, but I must say, he is a very good father because he supports & loves his children unconditionally. Gulistan might not be on good terms with Aurang but the way he told Gohar to see him off was his way of showing his love for Aurang. I respect the writer for balancing the bads with the goods in all the characters, it somehow makes them all look human & not just black & white fictional characters. It is commendable that where the writer has introduced us to the darkest of their secrets, he has given us an insight into some good qualities that they endorse as well.

After a lot of thinking, Shireen realized that she went a little overboard & said things that might have hurt Durkhane & she also realized that the plan that Durkhane devised was only to rectify the situation. It is actually quite heart warming to see a display of such a unique friendship, where both Shireen & Durkhane are always ready to walk an extra mile for each other. Durkhane thinks by speaking to Aurang, she will be able to save Shireen & this is something that even Shireen agreed upon as well. Aurang on his own went to seek the truth from Saif ur Rehman, however he couldn’t meet him but he did get to meet Shireen & what’s even more special about that meeting was that he immediately recognized Shireen & displayed the level of respect he has for her & females in general by telling her to step behind the door. It was actually quite admirable. The way Shireen cried for Aurang was really beautiful, it’s like she got a validation that he remembers her too. After long years of waiting, she got her moment of glory, probably & sadly, for the first & the last time.

I feel at this stage, everyone’s timing was off, but the only one who turned things into her favor was Saif ur Rehman’s wife. Gullalai’s timing was off where she didn’t speak about Palwasha & Aurang. Durkhane’s timing was off where she didn’t go to meet Aurang. Aurang’s timing was off where he didn’t get a chance to speak to Shireen, but the only one who executed her plan well was Saif’s wife. She convinced Gulistan that Saif was apologetic & wanted to amend things by sacrificing his sister. I am sure, Gulistan will put this opportunity to good use & he sill make Safiullah get married to Shireen.

As usual, this episode was amazing too. I enjoyed the conversation that Torah & his friend were having about Torah’s complexion, lol. I actually think the dialogue writer has a great sense of humor & so does the director where he uses these bits to add some comic relief in an otherwise serious & gloomy episode. I can’t wait for the next episode. Saif ur Rehman has proved that he is a ‘beghairat’ because he not only put his wife in the forefront but will now use his sister to save his sorry being. If Saif ur Rehman was such a man that he mistook himself to be, he would’ve tackled everything on his own without involving the females of his house. Anyways, let’s see what they have in store for us. Thank you Team Sang e Marmar for giving us another brilliant episode with so many heartwarming moments to its credit. Please share your thoughts about this beautiful episode of Sang e Marmar.

Edited to add: Can I ask you guys a question? Have you guys ever seen me discussing future happenings of a drama based on the OST or the promotional promos that were shown before the drama went on air? The answer is NO, right? Then why is it that despite mentioning in different reviews of different dramas that I do not appreciate “””spoiler alerts””” the readers find it as their duty to discuss the happenings of probably the last episode in the very initial reviews? I am not saying no to speculations, but I am strongly speaking against the spoiler alerts. If you guys want to discuss the future happenings based on what you picked from the OST, then please discuss it on some other thread because from now on, I will delete any such comment that will have a spoiler alert. I have never asked you guys to tell me what is going to happen next, so I will make sure I don’t get ANY spoiler alerts. Thanks for paying attention & thanks to ALL those readers who told me what is going to happen next (as if I asked)!!!

What to fix in Pakistani Dramas

With the onset of innumerable private channels and many new production houses Pakistani producers are now making many more dramas than they were at the time when there was only one drama channel. While some Pakistani dramas are still so enticing that we can watch them over and over again, there are also those dramas which lack a solid story line. Also, there are many times when the scenes which are shown in the OST which people very often look forward to are either skipped altogether or when they are shown in the drama the background and the scenarios are such that these scenes do not have the same impact which viewers hoped they would have.

Stereotyping is also very common in Pakistani dramas. Usually the girl who wins the hero over in the end is the one who is traditional and covers her head and most often the negative roles played by women are the ones who wear Western dresses. Apart from this the mazloomiyat of women is over exploited by Pakistani writers who should try to experiment with concepts different from that of mazloom aurat.

Doosri biwi dramas are also a regular feature now. The man is never at fault in such dramas and both the wives are seen fighting over him until one wins him over.

Watch the video and hear in detail about the things our producers and writers need to fix in Pakistani dramas.

Teri Chah Mein – Episode 13 – Neighbours All Around!

0

Chalo ji.. Neighbour in distress – marry her. Problem solved. Doesn’t matter that you are already married to an older woman who is the mother of your bachpan ki mangaitar and you have been kicked out of the house now to keep your wife’s daughter who is also your cousin and ex fiancé from trying to attract you towards herself. Brain in knots yet? At least that is how easily our serial nikkah-er Faisal solves the whole issue of neighbours questioning Amber’s character. This episode was neighbours overload. True, rights of the neighbours and all that but here neighbours, be it Zara’s new ones, or the faarigh interfering ones in Amber’s building or the neighbours that were Faisal and Amber – now Mr. and Mrs. Faisal (Number 2) – were in abundance!

So, Amber’s mother has passed away and left her all alone in the world – well, minus Faisal that is. Given that there are no other siblings or relatives in the picture, you could understand Amber’s loss and how bereft she looked after her mother’s death. Even though she is an educated, working woman I could still see where she was coming from when she said she was thinking of moving in with her aunt for she felt she lacked the confidence to stay alone and support herself and was not very thrilled with the idea of living with her aunt either. Faisal goes out of his way to check on her, help her out and take care of her and her affairs and with Mehwish traveling and a job that seemingly is not very demanding, he has plenty of time to give to Amber. They grow closer as expected, something the neighbours also pick up on and question their relationship.

pic1

I found the whole confrontation that led to the ‘proposal’ so absurd, I can not explain! Matlab, neighbour says why don’t you marry her and Faisal says okay, if that helps – I will marry her. He turns to a whimpering Amber, who a moment before very fiercely tells off the neighbours for trying to meddle and tell her what she should be doing, and pops the question and she promptly nods yes. Roll on the next scene (and this one had me laughing) for Faisal marries Amber and the witnesses and only attendees at the nikkah are the neighbours that moments earlier were at Amber’s doorstep and now are the ones doing the dua and then congratulating Faisal. I mean, what the hell?! Lol.

For someone who is very khidmat and bechara prone, Faisal sure as hell has a very thick skin. When he says to Amber that he never gives a thought to what people think, I thought truer words have not left this man’s mouth. He did not care what anyone thought when he married Mehwish, does not care about tongues wagging about him and Amber until it became a problem for Amber and then now shows up with wife number 2 and expects wife number 1 to ‘go with the flow’? I am not a fan of Mehwish’s character – far from it, but even I felt the casual way Faisal stated he has married Amber and brought her to live under the same roof was a bit hard to swallow.

pic2

Zara seems to have achieved her goal so what next? I was glad she stopped her mother from slapping her. Mehwish’s character is honestly so bizarre I can only shake my head. The only impression I get of her relationship with Zara is someone who is an inconvenience to her and a punching bag! I also do not understand Faisal and I am not sure if that is even a sad thing because on the one hand this guy was passionately in love with Mehwish and on the other he has not only married Amber so soon but decided to stand up against the world for her. I guess it was the chai that was his undoing – the scene when he thinks of how he would make tea for Mehwish and here this woman makes tea for him. And dinner. For the saying ‘the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach’ was definitely penned by a Pakistani keeping in mind a Pakistani man. I am not a feminist nor do I have anything against Pakistani men (I am alhamdolillah happily married to one, LOL) but that is just what is drummed into our brains time and again through our dramas.

I suppose Zara will develop more than a neighbourly interest in her new neighbour and his daughter and vice versa. Faisal will fall in love with Amber – until he meets his next prey (probably not while this drama lasts). Mehwish will lose her marbles –the few she had left anyway and everyone will gravely agree she has been dealt with what she deserved. And this drama will act as another domino in the chain that is about to set off and wipe away drama viewing from my mind altogether! When I write here I often sit and ponder – why did this happen, is this justified, is this person really evil, etc. and try to choose my words and thoughts carefully before I pen them down but our writers, it seems pick issues which may not have been addressed earlier and you tune in wondering how wisely and sensitively the writer will deal with it all – only to leave you shaking your head at the end because everyone seems to have lost the plot, especially the writer! I am currently reviewing Intezaar and was interested to see how the child abuse issue would be dealt in that. I had the same thoughts when I started watching this one except that both dramas seem to have started off well and now have turned into a complete mess, like a biryani that went wrong with overboiled rice!

Next week’s preview shows more of Mehwish’s tantrums and Faisal defending helpless Amber. Meow! Anyone else watch this episode? Would love to hear your thoughts 

Aap Ke Liye Episode 14 15 16 Review – Finally Things Moved Forward!

0

Ohkay so, the last three episodes of Aap Ke Liye were actually enjoyable because things have been moving forward at this stage of the drama. I think what further developed my interest in the show is the fact that Aap Ke Liye is airing twice a week, which means more content to watch & less episodes to go. I think this was the best decision that the channel made because it seems even they got a little bored with the pace & wanted to finish this drama off quickly.

Washma had no idea what she was about to do when she decided to expose Nishat infront of everyone saying that Nishat only went to Omar’s place to reject him. Areesha also believed Washma because she knew that Nishat was never in Omar’s favor & she was capable of doing what Washma was saying. The only person who chose not to believe Washma was Shaheer because till date he is unable to see the real face of his sister & can not conceive of the fact that Nishat can not actually wish well for her siblings. Obviously, Washma wanted to help her husband & his younger sister that is why she made a rash decision of saying the truth out loud without even thinking things through because if she had, she would’ve approached everything with a little plan & manipulation. Obviously, Nishat got informed that Washma was telling on her, therefore she changed her plan & to score some brownie points in front of Shaheer & Areesha she accepted Omar’s proposal.

Washma left only to get a chance of reflecting on things & her marital life in general but I am sure she will thank Maryam later because if it wasn’t for the drama that she created, Washma had never gone back. Maryam knew that Washma will do the exact same thing that she will be told not to, that is why she took a chance & hurt Washma’s ego, only to push her to go back to Shaheer’s home & fight the battle with Nishat properly. Yes, Maryam knew that in the course of her argument she will hurt Waheed too but she knew when she will explain everything to him & come clean about her intentions, her husband will understand her too.

Washma went back stronger & better & she made sure to let Nishat know that she won’t give up. By swooping in between Areesha’s proposal scenario, Washma gave a clear message to Nishat that she is read to fight & will make everything happen that Nishat doesn’t want to see happening. Washma treated Omar’s family with respect & literally saved Areesha’s relationship because she knows that Areesha loves Omar, he himself is a very decent guy & belongs to a good family. Nishat thought that just by agreeing to the proposal she saved herself from getting exposed but planned on maligning Omar’s mother’s heart against Areesha so much that she will end up refusing to go ahead with the marriage herself but it was Washma who outbid Nishat by making sure that things don’t go against Areesha. If Nishat knows the art of manipulation, so does Washma, that is why just to settle everything she apologized to Nishat in front of Shaheer so that he knows that Washma wants to start afresh, because after that she will do everything that even Nishat wouldn’t have thought about.

It is not only Nishat who is after Shaheer’s wealth, Imdaad Hussain too is involved in this agenda that is why he tells Nishat to help him send Shaheer away so that he can go ahead with a business deal that he finds lucrative. I liked the fact that Washma decided to join the office, even though at first she wanted to relax & enjoy being a wife of a business tycoon, she learned the fact that she needs to be independent to shape up her own life & have her own identity.

Overall, these three episodes were definitely worth a watch, however I will say that even though Samina Peerzada is convincing as Nishat & her acting is good too but most of the times she goes overboard which most certainly wasn’t required. I think if she had subtly played the character of Evil Nishat, it would’ve left an impact because now her portrayal seems borderline fake to me. Shaheer & Washma’s scenes are done really really well, I like how the writer has developed their feelings for each other over the period of time. Even though it was hard for Washma to leave, this short-lived separation taught both Shaheer & Washma that they have gotten used to the idea of being around each other, that is why not only Washma was missing Shaheer, Shaheer was feeling lost without her too. Also, I am glad that in such a typical sazishi story, the writer has given us some very candid & natural moments that the couples enjoy with each other like watching a movie, listening to music, dining out & making each other smile.

I am definitely looking forward to what Washma has in store for us. Ever since the channel has decided to air this drama twice a week, it makes me feel how much of a difference a fast pace makes. Imagine covering all these happenings in 3 weeks wouldn’t have grabbed our interest as much as it did in a week or so. My complain with the director & the cameraman still remains, I hate the movements & the white cast-like boarder in all the frames. Also, I know the director tried some new angles like capturing Washma’s face from the wood carving of a chair, but sorry, in stead of looking good, it makes it look like the director was a spy & he was spying upon people & trying to capture their personal conversations. Arij Fatima has acted effortlessly in this drama & she makes Washma fun to watch. Faysal Qureshi has done his part really really well too but Faysal, please keep a light hand on the makeup. It is not fun seeing a makeup clad ken in a 1080p HD quality video as every speck of makeup screams out loud & seems very unflattering. Also, even though Arij’s acting compensates a lot, her unblended black edges of her eye-makeup still seem distracting to me, I wish someone had handed her a blending brush probably Sigma e40 so that she had blended those harsh black lines & edges. Also I think Arij or her makeup artist should have kept her look natural at least in the scenes where she just got out from bed, it seems a little too fake to wake up with a black smokey eye look. Anyways, please share your thoughts about these 3 episodes of App Ke Liye.

Cheers,

Alpha Bravo Charlie-A Masterpiece

So the first thought that crossed my mind while watching this beautifully portrayed story was ‘Where have these days gone?’ No, Seriously. Watching such crappy serials every now and then has seriously affected my taste buds that now I can’t even stand such serials with the credit and appreciation they actually deserve. Patriotism, thrill, humor, romance, jealousy and sense of achievement all are packed in one and we all are left in awe. Those who have watched this can’t disagree that this drama is the ‘perfection personified’ in terms of everything. Shoaib Mansoor really roved himself as the best director of this time by extracting nothing but best from the cast who had no previous experience of acting. Who can say that it was their first play? For those who haven’t watched this play yet, here is the story:

Story:

As the name indicates, the drama is based on the life and times of three characters — Faraz, Kashif, and Gulsher also known as Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie respectively — and their friendship. These passionate young men wish to start their careers in the Pakistan army. In the initial episodes, ample footage is used to detail the background of every individual and the circumstances under which they enroll for the armed forces. Faraz is Mr Perfect, the guy who does everything right while Gulsher is a polite, simple-minded, shy person. Kashif is originally the funny man responsible for providing most of the comic relief through his antics, pranks and mischief. Eventually the series morphs into a coming-of-age story where the lead characters realize that there is more to life than their present happy-go-lucky lifestyle as they experience reality in all its fragility and extremities — jealousy, heartbreaks, trauma and death. Another important character is Shahnaaz, a confident, educated and well-mannered young lady, who plays an important role in the lives of these friends. Her involvement with them in the role of friend, wife and confidante adds reality to the series that is poignant and touching on a personal level. The main theme of the drama is that every person should lead a purposeful existence and that, if one has the will and the passion, he can achieve anything.

There are certain aspects of this drama which make it stand out in the crowd and here are those:

Patriotism:

So how many times we have seen such dramas in which the story revolves around the sense of devotion towards country? All we have seen are misunderstandings, extra marital affairs, second marriages, love triangles, women running after their cousins who show zero interest in them. For God’s sake there is something beyond this crap. The beauty of ABC is the central point of the story which has everything to do with leading a ‘Purposeful’ life. The word sounds odd because the dramas running now a days show the marriage and affairs as the sole purpose of human life. The leads Kashif, Faraz, Gulsher and Shahnaz made devotion their first priority. Do we have dramas like these anymore where people are selfless and all they think about are the ways in which they can utilize their abilities in the best way for the prosperity of their country?

harlie1

Humor:

Honestly speaking there was a constant smile on my face while watching it excluding some emotional scenes in which I couldn’t hold back my tears. The naughty and witty character of Kashif constantly makes you look forward to his scenes. Abdullah Mahmood has breathed life into his character. How many times we have seen humor in our dramas that also keep the integrity intact? Even some serious situations brought a smile on my face and I couldn’t resist that. The style all the army officers carry and their sarcastic remarks on every situation and lack of emotions on their faces while delivering the dialogues was beautifully portrayed. Kashif won the game for me when it comes to humor and pranks, such a full of life person he was. All credit goes to the whole crew of ABC. They did their complete homework before touching such a topic that demands nothing but ‘perfection’ and ‘reality’.

charlie2

A ‘Sensible’ love triangle:

I have laid stress on sensible. Yes, it was a decent and sensible love triangle. When Faraz found out that Shehnaaz was not interested in him but in Gulsher, he went through an emotional breakdown but soon he realized that he was getting jealous of his own friend and jealousy is actually self destruction. He became the cause of their union and look at Gulsher, he knew that his friend was interested in Shehnaaz so he explained it to Faraz that he couldn’t even think of the girl his friend was interested in. That is what they were taught in Army. Bravo Man! This track was given the minimum coverage. If that happens in recent dramas be ready for World War 3. And they will stretch the whole story to 30 episodes leaving the audience scratching their head thinking that who will be the luckiest person on the face of this planet who will end up with the girl.

charliee3

Sorry! No Misunderstandings:

Even after Gulsher and Shehnaaz tied the knot, Faraz used to visit them and what surprised me the most was not for a second Gulsher doubted his intentions or thought something cheap about the scenario. Imagine if it happens in current days, get ready to hear those three magical words: Talaaq, Talaaq, Talaaq. Our writers have left no stone unturned in making this word nothing but a joke! Even Shehnaaz used to write letters to Kashif along with Gulsher when they both were on their mission and Sorry! Again no misunderstandings. Such things seem alien to me after watching the current crap on-air these days.

charlie4

Strong Headed female lead:

Shehnaaz knew what she wanted from her life. She was not before any man and was not waiting for his ‘Khuwabon Ka Shehzada’ to complete her life. She was strong, determined, devoted and what not? She was looking for a man for whom she could do anything, who had some deficiencies and who could take some benefit from her presence. She could easily drool over Faraz who was more interested in her but she chose Gulsher over him who had no family background neither he was a rich fellow with a Mercedes like Faraz. She was a teacher of special children and we saw a lady who had much more to do with her life unlike our heroines who have zero self respect and all they have to do with their lives is playing tricks to get the ‘Shehzada Gulfam’ of their dreams. And it’s not their fault either; all credit goes to our writers who are stuck to a single topic i-e, cousin marriage.

charlie5

Decent Romance:

Our directors can learn something from this play. You can convey all the emotions with decency and without any physical contact that serves nothing but ending up viewers changing the channel or in some cases one or two of the family members leave the TV lounge. When Gulsher talked to Shahnaaz for the first time on the telephone, he said “Bat simple si hai. Ap qoum ki izzat hain aur main uska muhafiz” What a beauty. Without going overboard and getting cheesy, he conveyed what was needed to be. The innocence on Gulsher’s face and Shehnaaz’s makes all their scenes remarkable.

charlie6

Selfless Friendship:

The trio of Gulsher, Faraz and Kashif was one of the reasons behind the success of this play. Whenever they shared the screen, their bonding and chemistry made the scene picture perfect. Despite coming from different backgrounds, they never had a conflict based on it. Gulsher, the one having weak family background was always looked after by the other two and they always took great care of him knowing how sensitive a financially unstable person can get and how a small act can hurt his ego. They never looked down upon him and never made him feel insecure. Brilliant! I absolutely loved the bond they had and their love for one another.

Siachin Conflict and Bosnia War:

The drama was shot at beautiful locations giving us views of Siachin and Bosnia. It might be difficult to shoot in such extreme weather conditions but they did their job flawlessly. We came to know through this drama that through how many difficulties our soldiers went and it’s all because of the sleepless nights they spend that we can sleep peacefully without fear. It was a tribute to our Pak Army and an eye opener for those who think that being in Army and fighting against enemies is a piece of cake. This drama was a collage of different true events picked from here and there and gave us the insight of the tough life our soldiers spend. At the end we saw Kashif losing his both arms and legs and it is so inspiring to know that his character was inspired from a real Army Officer Lieutenant Colonel (R) Zafar Abbasi Ghazi. And we saw Gulsher losing his life. How beautiful it is to watch something like this that teaches you to think above personal level. Nobody can deny that dramas do have an impact on audience and all these purposeless dramas based on extra marital affairs, doubts and misunderstandings are playing their role very well.

charlie7

I am actually short of words while describing the beauty of this magnificent piece of writing and the strong message it holds for our youngsters. Those who haven’t watched this play yet, please go and watch. It is undoubtedly the best drama in the history of Pakistan television. Those who have already watched it, please share your thoughts.

Amna

Dumpukht- Atish-e-Ishq Episode 14- Two birds, one stone

I don’t think any of us could’ve seen this coming! Hamein gaddi ka bhi soochna hota hai… just when Wali wanted to shine in his moment of manipulating the situation into Habibullah’s favour, Peer Sahab surprised everyone by sharing his wahi– Given the gravity of the situation, it was imperative that the nikah take place but the announcement left Kulsoom in a state of shock and rendered her numb. Tactfully keeping the women at bay, Habibullah did what he needed to do to turn things around.

Akhir ek maa Ki baddua lag hi gayi... Tahira never feared Allah’s wrath when she cursed her daughter and finally she ended up paying the price for her andha ehtemaadh. The very people she looked up to for blessings ended up being the ones to wreak havoc. Wali questioned the wisdom behind Habibullah’s decision and it dawned on me that this entire story was fabricated with one goal in mind- acquiring a woman who Peer Sahab had set his eyes on… wars have been waged over women in history; but wars are fought by men not slaves! And Kulsoom’s family were slaves to their Murshids and Habibullah knew that only too well.

I felt sorry for Haroon Bhai- his love story ended before it had a chance to take off and Shagufta was left in tears. Haroon was always shown as the one with the strongest aqeedah so he was the easiest to control. I shudder to think how Habibullah will exploit Kulsoom now that she’s under his panaah. Who will Kulsoom turn to if he chooses to violate her? Who will believe her? Surely not her family- these people who she called her own didn’t wait to think for a second of the repercussions of this nikah and how it will impact Kulsoom for the rest of her life.

Bibi was unable to intervene and she didn’t even manage to get a word in private. She glared at Habibullah but the deed is done and I don’t see how she will get it undone. I fail to read Bibi- I was sure she was pushing Habibullah towards Kulsoom and her taunts of the past were confirming the same. But the Bibi over the past couple of episodes is a completely changed one and I’m left wondering if I misread her expressions of if that was purposely done to confuse the viewers.

Bilal was shown for all of 30 seconds and I’m waiting for him to recover and confront Habibullah and Wali. Meher Nigar signalled the storm ahead and I hope she doesn’t have to suffer any further. How many of you were shocked at the nikah and the dulha?

Dhaani Episode 14 Review – A Little Too Slow!

0

Ohkay so, this episode of Dhaani was on the slower side too. They are taking their sweet time in showcasing the heartbreak both Dhaani & Sameer are going through. It is somehow good to see that as much as Dhaani is suffering, Sameer is suffering too, but I guess it is time to move forward to the next phase of the story.

All of a sudden, the happy & chirpy young fellows like Dhaani, Shaani & Raja have forgotten how to smile because they all are struggling. Gone are the days when they used to have fun together because where Dhaani is heartbroken, so is Raja & in the middle of this Shaani is struggling too because she is seeing her two closest people in pain. Sameer managed to get a glimpse of Dhaani & he was shocked to see her getting engaged the same day. Obviously, Sameer became a lot more restless but Dhaani thought it was only because his ego was hurt. Dhaani is right in misjudging Sameer as after finding out how she was never in his heart, she hasn’t given a chance to Sameer to explain how much pain & regret he is feeling.

Sameer still hasn’t been able to put a finger on what he feels for Dhaani, that is why he wants to speak to her in a hope that may be she can help him understand his state of mind better. Sameer even went out of the way by arranging a gathering in the Purani Haveli in a hope that he will be able to meet Dhaani & explain things to her but that attempt went in vain. Sameer however did get to speak to Dhaani for a few seconds & I am sure he convinced Dhaani to speak to him at least once showing his eagerness. As much as Dhaani says she doesn’t want to be associated with Sameer, even she wants to know what he has to say & what he is going through because the moment she heard there was an event taking place in Purani Haveli, she grew a little impatient.

In this episode, apart from the heavy stuff, I am glad they have given us some lighthearted moments between Raja & his friends. I enjoy listening to their conversations a lot & it shows how much Raja’s friends love & respect him. Amjad & family got a lot of coverage in this episode too & it seems even Amjad is quite happy with his engagement with Dhaani. Even if Amjad doesn’t say, just like any other guy who gets engaged, he wants to be on talking terms with Dhaani too, that is why he is seen speaking against the restrictions that Kaleem has imposed on his daughters. To be honest, even though it is a done deal that Sameer & Dhaani will end up together, I would hate to see Amjad’s family getting hurt in the middle. Amjad is a decent guy & most probably he will back off or might end up with Shaani, I just hope the entire family doesn’t suffer because of Sameer & Dhaani’s immaturity & irrational decision making.

Overall, this episode didn’t offer much but I hope they take things forward in the episodes to come & end the drama without wasting a lot of time. The actors have done a brilliant job & so have the writer & the director. I like how they add a touch of compassion, respect & honesty among the people of the interior city. Their scenes always bring a smile on my face. The way Kaleem still apologized to the Halwai for Raja’s behavior was quite nice. Also, I think they shouldn’t have shot all the scenes of Sameer & his friend in the dance club, it looks like that have no other place to live. Anyways, please share your thoughts about this episode of Dhaani.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.
