Fahad Mustafa: Mr. Straightforward!

Fahad Mustafa is currently one of the biggest stars in the country. People love his game show and his films are becoming super hits one after another. Fahad gave an interview to Images and the actor didn’t hold back on anything. Look what he had to say about anything or everything; from stardom to bollywood he just poured out his heart.

Of course, you do tend to make some very unique wardrobe choices – some would even call them eccentric. You have often credited a brand called Cherry for your clothing. Who is Cherry exactly?

Fahad Mustafa : Cherry is a tailoring brand that I have been going to my whole life. I am probably one of the few TV personalities who believes in paying for my wardrobe and I do so happily because I enjoy devising my wardrobe with Cherry. They just understand what I want. I don’t believe in throwing about names of designer labels just to prove to the world that I am a star. What’s the difference between Cherry and our so-called designers? They all have tailors sitting in their workshops and if they all create well-finished clothes then there’s really no difference.

Fahad Mustafa: Mr. Straightforward!

So you plan out your wardrobe and styling yourself?

Fahad Mustafa: Yes. If I look good, the credit goes to me and if I am a walking disaster it’s my own fault. I was hosting a live show for 30 days and blunders are bound to occur. I still think that I was less of a disaster than certain others.

You did indulge in a lot of layers and your clothes were very fitted…

Fahad Mustafa: It’s a chilled studio so the layers are not a problem. Also, I am thin – if I want to wear fitted clothes, why shouldn’t I?

Your game show may be a huge hit but some of the ‘games’ that you played were extensively criticised. Was it necessary to demean people by rewarding the ones who weighed the most?

Fahad Mustafa: The people who were playing the games didn’t mind so why should the rest of the world? It’s a game show and everything is in good fun. I am probably the only male host who interacts very easily with women in the audience. They hug me, shake hands with me, even high-five me. They trust me, I respect them and we all have a great time together. You should see the excitement on the set during a show – it’s like an India-Pakistan match!

But perhaps you could have used your status as a popular host to elevate your show to certain intellectual standards? Scriptwriter Anwar Maqsood commented that this year’s Ramazan transmissions made him wish that there would be a power shutdown right around show-time!

Fahad Mustafa: It’s easy to criticise. I’d rather entertain than deliver solemn lectures. If Anwar Maqsood is so perturbed by diminishing standards why doesn’t he train others to be like him? I prefer to give messages while laughing along with people rather than by sermonising.

Fahad Mustafa: Mr. Straightforward!

In your show, you often make jibes regarding Aamir Liaquat Hussain, your main competitor in the game-show arena. Why do you indulge in such open rivalry?

Fahad Mustafa: I love Aamir bhai and whatever he does in his show, I still watch it. When I used to host a morning show for the Hum Network three years ago, Aamir bhai would come as a guest to my show on receiving a single call from me. I am a bit hesitant when it comes to discussing religious topics and so I would ask him to chalk out a list of questions for me. I would ask them as is and he would reply. I comment about him frequently on my game show but it is all in good humor and Aamir bhai knows this.

Moving on to cinema, your Na Maloom Afraad 2 releases soon and you’re also going to be starring in the sequel to Jawani Phir Nahi Ani. Both movies are expected to be hits but don’t you tire of playing the same kind of roles over and over again, of the street-smart, poverty-stricken boy-next-door?

Fahad Mustafa: I am like that – why shouldn’t I enjoy playing such roles? They have worked for me so far and besides, I also acted in Mah-e-Meer which was completely different.

It was also a movie that failed at the box office. What prompted you to be part of Mah-e-Meer?

Fahad Mustafa: I think every actor dreams of being part of a movie like Mah-e-Meer. I am Sindhi-speaking and yet I managed to play Meer to an audience that consisted of intellectuals who dissect everything to bits and pleased them to a large extent. It got me critical acclaim and as an actor, that means a lot to me. Of course, I would never produce a movie like Mah-e-Meer and if I ever do, I would keep it restricted to festivals because it certainly didn’t have any mass appeal. The Mah-e-Meer premiere was the only time I reached an event two hours late. I kept circling the cinema wondering if I should go or not.

You seem to have a very good equation with director Nabeel Qureshi who has cast you three times in a row – for Na Maloom Afraad,Actor-In-Law and now, Na Maloom Afraad 2. Why do you think he opts for you and not other young actors?

Fahad Mustafa: Nabeel will cast me in his fourth movie too. It’s because he has seen that if he works hard, I will work just as hard with him. We have done some very expensive shoots together and we have also sat together on roadsides and had discussions.

I don’t believe that I am a great actor but I am very hard-working. I enjoy my work. I also don’t see any point in putting on airs and graces just to prove to my co-workers that I am a huge star. Attitude problems, I believe, are the main reason why many of our actors aren’t able to succeed.

Fahad Mustafa: Mr. Straightforward!

And you say this from your experiences with other actors?

Fahad Mustafa: Yes. There have been so many times when I have visited my productions and the actors working there ask out loud, “Who is he?”

Why do they have to be so petty? I am well-known in my country and besides, I am the one who signs their cheques. Why do they have to feign these pretenses in order to emphasise that they are stars?

There are also so many actors who have huge egos on the basis of their social media followings. Certain makeup artists and salons encourage them to behave like divas and they get lost in a bubble that disconnects them completely from the audience that they have to cater to. They will say that they want to be ‘exclusive’. Why do they want to be exclusive? So that nobody hears them or sees them? Why do they feel so superior towards the masses? They are the ones that have to accept them as stars in order for them to be successful.

Perhaps by being exclusive, these celebrities want to be seen as larger-than-life stars? Shaan Shahid recently commented about you that while you have potential, you are losing your star-power by becoming too mass-centric…

Fahad Mustafa: I think Shaan Bhai’s theory gets negated immediately because despite being seen in a very mass-centric live show, my movies are still hits. TV can be run by network heads and their particular favorites may be preferred there but cinema’s the one medium where an actor becomes successful on the basis of his popularity with the masses.

Now that you have gained a huge fan-base in Pakistan, would you consider expanding it further by acting in Indian cinema?

Fahad Mustafa: I wouldn’t work in India unless I got offered a project that was truly interesting. It’s certainly not my ambition to become a Bollywood star. A long time ago, Humayun Saeed said something to me that I have always remembered: India can be a bonus but it can never be a perpetual career path for a Pakistani actor.

I recently worked with Indian director Pradeep Sarkar for a commercial and even though he was very amiable towards me, we eventually ended up discussing India and Pakistan. It’s just something that we can’t avoid and I refuse to believe that any local actor who goes to India to work doesn’t get to hear comments about Pakistan. They have to curb their personalities there and why should they have to?

Additionally, our actors tend to return from India with surreal expectations from the local industry. We don’t have the budgets for the vanity vans and fringe benefits that are now part of Bollywood. Actors need to understand this before they start throwing tantrums.

Look at Javed Sheikh. He is one of the finest actors in our country and he’s working in productions from all over the world and yet, he gives respect to whoever he works with. We need to understand that eventually, we have to pave our careers in Pakistan. Why work against each other when it could be easier to just work with each other?

Fahad Mustafa: Mr. Straightforward!

For one of the country’s biggest stars, you’re surprisingly humble. How do you keep the success from going to your head?

Fahad Mustafa: There was a time when I rode a motorbike and I travelled in buses and I haven’t forgotten it.

Right now, I think I am just going through a lucky run in my career. All my life, I have made some very bad decisions. I was supposed to be a pharmacist and I dropped out in third year. And I believe that one day, this phase in my career will also end. My game show gets very high ratings in Ramazan but I never ask my bosses at the ARY Network what the numbers are. I just brace myself for the day when the ratings won’t be as high, when I’ll be fading out. This is what keeps me grounded.

Besides, what’s the charm in having a bloated ego? I enjoy my work and I want others to enjoy it with me. The staff in my production company includes young people who are talented and are willing to work hard to get somewhere. And I never dictate them like I am their boss. We just work together.

Did you branch out into production particularly because actors can fade out with age and then, they can develop their careers as producers?

Fahad Mustafa: I like producing. My father was a producer back in the STN days and so I understand the nitty-gritties. Of course, as an actor, there is always the fear that one day you will not get offered any work. In such a scenario, I’d rather create my own content. Credit for my success as a producer also largely goes to the ARY Network. They have always promoted my work fairly and equally with that of others.

Three years down the line, your equation with the ARY Network is still going strong. Have you considered branching out to other networks as well?

Fahad Mustafa: Currently, my productions are airing on ARY Network and Urdu1. Should the need arise, I will work with the others too but I am satisfied with the direction that I have taken with my career. For three years, my CEO at ARY, Jerjees Seja, and I have been working together and we still get along. We laugh together and worked together every day during Ramazan. That’s a rare equation.

Besides, I have learnt that it is better to work with the people who want to work with you rather than run after those who don’t really care. For three years, prior to coming on board with ARY, I hosted a morning show for the Hum Network and I think I got completely drained physically and mentally at the time. Perhaps they didn’t see the potential in me but I felt that I just couldn’t match up to their particular favourite group of actors.

When you work with someone who believes in you, your work improves, you look better, feel better. My career immediately mushroomed after joining ARY. It’s just better to work with people who are truly interested in working with you.

Famous Pakistanis And Their Charitable Endeavors

0

“The sole meaning of life is to serve the humanity”. The gist of life well described by Leo Tolstoy in one of his famous sayings. Our country is replete with people who are the living examples of the above quote.

The idea of this article is to highlight the efforts of some of those prominent personalities, who have earned fame for themselves and for the country in their respective fields. Now, they are on a greater mission of working for welfare of the lesser privileged. They were the heroes of their arenas but what make them heroes of our hearts is all the social work they do for the people of the country.

Imran Khan

Pakistan’s legendary cricket captain Imran Khan after bagging the World Cup for the country in 1992, announced his retirement from cricket. He is a gem who will always shine in the history of Pakistani cricket.

Famous Pakistanis And Their Charitable Endeavors

The Kaptaan of cricket and our hearts too, Imran Khan has always had great sentiments for humankind. He has been found doing charitable work many times but his efforts to establish ‘Shaukat Khanam Hospita’l is most substantial. The cancer hospital, which is one of its kind and the project is prodigious.

During the 1990s, Imran Khan served as UNICEF’s Special Representative for Sports. Then in 1991, he founded the ‘Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust’, a charity organization that lead to the establishment of Pakistan’s first and only cancer hospital in Lahore.

Imran Khan, a philanthropist has not only invested his time and energy in the heath-care division but has also devoted himself to improve the educational system of the country. He established a technical college in the Mianwali district called ‘Namal College’ in 2008. ‘Namal College’ is built by the’ Mianwali Development Trust’, which was also founded by Imran Khan.

He has also founded ‘Imran Khan Foundation’ trust to assist needy people of the country. This foundation has also collaborated with ‘Buksh Foundation’ for a project ‘Lighting a Million Lives’. The project will develop several Solar Charging Stations in villages of Dera Ghazi Khan, Mianwali and Dera Ismail Khan.

Imran Khan is a doer and an achiever, a dynamo for himself, for the country and for the mankind.

Shehzad Roy:

A heart throb romantic pop singer who started his career with release of an album Zindagi in 1995. A youthful talented 18-year-old singer who caught the eye of everyone, soon conquered the music charts of television and radio. He prevailed to rule the hearts of audience by the release of his subsequent albums Darshan, Teri soorat, Rab Janey and Buri Baat Hai. Who could ever imagine that the chocolate boy at the peak of his fame will transform into a social worker and humanitarian.

Famous Pakistanis And Their Charitable Endeavors

In 2002, Shehzad establish a non-governmental and non-profitable organization ‘Zindagi Trust’. The moto of this trust was to improve the quality of education for an average Pakistani child. In 2003, the trust started a program named ‘I-am-paid-to-learn’ to encourage a working child to get paid for studying. The program was an excellent idea to discourage child labor.

The trust also introduced the public-school reforms at SMB Fatima Jinnah Government Girls School in Karachi to improve facilities, curriculum and teaching culture. Shehzad’s journey to improve the quality of education in Pakistan doesn’t end there. In 2013, he started a campaign to reform matric board and released a video ‘Sirf Bandhi Hai Kamar’ to support his cause.

Shehzad is one intelligent artist who has used his signing to wide spread his social message. He released an album ‘Qismat Apnay Hath Mein’, to address the social issues of the country in 2008. He also made serial documentaries for television named ‘Wasu Aur Mein’ and ‘Chal Parha’ for social and moral development of society.

Shehzad is not only serving the humanity through his charitable trust but also addressing the glitches of society through his singing. He knows how to use his talent for a greater cause than only entertainment.

Abrar ul haq

A geography teacher who burst on to the scene as a block buster singer by the release of his first album Billo de ghar in 1995. The title track of the album propelled Abrar to the unlimited heights of success and then he never looked back. He has produced a total of 8 music albums till date.

Famous Pakistanis And Their Charitable Endeavors

Besides being a pop, bhangra singer and folk musician, he is a philanthropist too. He is the founder and chairman of Sahara for Life Trust, a charitable organization that promotes health and education in remote areas of Pakistan. The trust has successfully completed two projects at Narowal Pakistan. First is the establishment of ‘Shafi Medical Complex’ and second is development of ‘Sahara Medical College’.

The trust has also been found working actively for rehabilitation of flood victims during 2010 and 2011, earthquake victims in 2005, IDPs of Swat and HIV / AIDS surveillance in the country.

Abrar is passionate for what he does and it seems like singing and social work both are his passions which goes hand in hand for him.

Shahid Afridi

Famous cricketer, Shahid Afridi, better known to us as Boom Boom Afridi, who first gained popularity when he smashed the fastest ODI century in 1996.

It has also initiated projects of water wells and hand pumps in Sindh and KPK and awarded educational scholarships to students. It also works to raise funds for other hospitals and many other projects.

His sixer in the path of serving humanity has made him more respectable to us.

Wasim Akram

Widely acknowledged as one of the greatest bowler of all times, Wasim Akram needs no introduction. He was the first bowler to reach the 500-wicket mark in ODI cricket and the only bowler to take 2 hat-tricks in both Test and One Day International cricket.

Famous Pakistanis And Their Charitable Endeavors

Wasim Akram has also decided to dedicate himself for the service of mankind. He has established a charity trust named ‘Akram Foundation’ that works to enhance value for life. It’s a humanitarian service that operates nationwide and collaborates on different social, educational and health projects to improve the quality of life.

These are the few popular names who are trying to payback the society in their own ways. We hope that they continue to do their good work and inspire several others to follow suit.

“SWITCHED OFF” a new trend among Pakistani Celebrities!

As a tabloid writer we have to stalk Pakistani celebrities on social media in order to know about happenings in their life so that we can develop some interesting stories. Okay so for last 4 to 5 days I am noticing a weird trend that is being followed by Pakistani Celebrities one by one. While scrolling my social media I found out that some artists are drooling over a word called “Switched off”. Some celebrities decided to break from the internet and go into hibernation. It is totally understood that everyone needs a break whether it is work or internet, you do need some phase to evaluate yourself and give time to your loved ones. However the word “Switched off” is used commonly in all these tweets and posts which is strange and sparking curiosity among fans .Here are some tweets and Instagram posts from celebrities who want to be switched off for some time.

Not being able to think clearly these days, Is it only me or happening with everyone? #SwitchedOff

A post shared by Anoushey Ashraf (@anousheyashraf) on

Now pondering over these tweets one can conclude that this “Switched Off” thingy is some kind of upcoming project and they all are part of it but it is definitely too early for us to come up with any conclusion, till then we have to wait and watch what’s exactly will going to happen. So what do you guys say is it some kind of a publicity stunt?

PEMRA Not Happy with Bol News!

PEMRA is the authority that monitors what is displayed on our national channels. It has been pretty active since the last few months; suspending Ramazan game shows, sending these shows notices and recently banning the IGLOO ad.

Behold, the champ has striked again! This time Bol news is in trouble with PEMRA. The number of times that channel has gotten notices from PEMRA makes one think it would be very unusual at the news channel’s offices when they do not get a notice.

The culprit, as usual is, Amir Liaqat’s ‘Aisay Nahi Chalay Ga’. The reason for the notice has been reported to be the airing of Sadiq Taqvi’s controversial comments regarding a serving officer of the Armed officer by the name and exposing the identity of an officer posted in a war zone. This was in direct violation of PEMRA’s code of conduct, National Action Plan and operation Radd-ul-Fasad.

Here’s a copy of the notice:

When Will Ayeza Sign A Film?

0

Her celebrity husband has transformed himself into a total film star. With three films uptill now Danish Taimoor is rising definitely rising high. But Ayeza is no less either; we see her in all awesome dramas looking all pretty but we still have to see her in a movie. So when will Ayeza sign a movie. When Ahmed Ali Butt asked her about this; this is how she responded:

Yeh Raha Dil Episode 21 Review – Not Too Happy!

Oh dear, never did I imagine that after watching an episode of Yeh Raha Dil, I will fall short of words & never did I imagine that I’d get to see any such episode of Yeh Raha Dil which wouldn’t really appeal to me. Sadly, this was one such episode of Yeh Raha Dil that I absolutely didn’t enjoy watching & it almost ended up becoming a burden to sit through this because all the situations that are now unfolding in the story are not making much sense. I don’t really want to say this but this & the last episode made me feel that certain things are only being added to drag the drama & reach a certain number of episode. What made me think on these lines were the scenes that were never-ending & the conversations that became so repetitive that I just couldn’t take it anymore.

I am sure those who like & understand Hassan’s character would have enjoyed the entire ‘comedy’ that was pushed in by showcasing his confusion & nervousness when he was trying to convey the new-found love that he has for Hayat because for someone like me, who doesn’t enjoy his character, I found it a bit too boring. If they had introduced Hassan as a confused soul right from the beginning, I think now all that he is doing wouldn’t have looked so odd & it wouldn’t have looked like he is not being himself because all that I knew about his character was that he was a very rigid & a sorted human being who knew his priorities & limits. Bringing flowers to his workplace & roaming around with a bouquet in a school full of students doesn’t really scream wise to me & all this while, I thought Hassan was all about wisdom & sensibility. Yes, right now it is being shown that when one is in love, they tend to do things which even they themselves never have imagined but once again, I don’t really understand how all of a sudden Hassan has fallen so much in love with Hayat that he is doing everything that is against his personality & nature? If they had shown him developing feelings for Hayat on his own, everything would’ve made sense but to see him doing all this on someone else’s testimony is unconvincing!

I really thought that Sidra being the one who knows what Hayat feels for Zaki would go & inform her that it is Zaki who has started all this & it is Zaki who is encouraging Hassan to propose to Hayat but in stead, she also joined in the drama & ended up pushing Hassan towards Hayat a bit more? I am not sure if that was supposed to evoke some comedy or it was just a stupid judgment on Sidra’s part because if there’s one person who understands Hayat it is Sidra, so I don’t think such clumsiness was expected from her. All the conversations in which Hassan was involved were long, boring & repetitive. Yes, we get it, he is new at this entire idea of love & he is feeling like a fish out of the water but after a certain point, in stead of deriving some comedy out of this scenario, I started feeling bad for Hassan because for their own selfish reasons, both Zaki & even Sidra were pushing him towards the wrong direction, like it feels they are turning Hassan into a puppet to kill their boredom which I never thought would happen with someone in this drama!

Thankfully, the second half of the episode got interesting where the characters who I am actually concerned about were shown. Life has presented a fantastic career opportunity to Nida & right now just because she has Zaki on her mind, she rejected the offer but I am not sure how long she’ll be able to resist it considering how Jimmy will be manipulating her & pushing her to sign the contract. Right now, Nida’s priorities are different that is why she didn’t discuss this offer with Zaki but I also have a feeling that if Zaki had told her not to do it, only to rile him up, she would’ve gone ahead with the contract. I am interested to see how this will unfold because Jimmy most certainly is not going to sit quietly & see this opportunity slip away from him!

Even though Hayat’s concerns for her father are understandable but her conversation with Fatima seemed a bit too sudden & uncalled for. I think Hayat has always been quite cautious & has dealt with her new family members with a lot of patience & respect, so not sure why she decided to speak to Fatima just so casually that too about the matters that are so personal? I think if Hayat had picked on something, she should’ve spoken to her father first because Fatima is not at all answerable to Hayat. I also believe she crossed the line with her step mother because she had no right to interrogate her like that in the first place. I really believe if Hayat could eavesdrop on Fatima & pick on the details about her love affair, then they could’ve also shown Hayat eavesdropping on Nida & getting to know what her intentions are because that would’ve guaranteed a quicker & a convincing wrapping of things, which I most certainly am looking forward to at this stage!

This episode didn’t work for me at all. I am sure it must’ve worked for all those who like Hassan’s character. Honestly speaking, the preview of the next episode didn’t seem promising & for the first time while watching the precap I felt burdened that I’d have to tune to this drama to find out what is going to happen because at this stage all the loyal viewers of Yeh Raha Dil want to see the ending of this drama & it’s sad that they’d have to sit through a few meaningless & filler episodes to finally know how it ends. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Yeh Raha Dil.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

Hadiqa Kiani Making Waves With Wajd Chapter 4

Hadiqa Kiani’s talent and popularity is no alien concept to the music lovers of Pakistan, but this time the veteran singer has been reigning supreme with folk lore.

Wajd is her new project, about reliving Punjabi historical folk songs and she has amassed a hundred million views with its first three chapters. The songs were Kamlee Tha Dhola, Bhit Ja Bhitaai and Aj Rung Hai and they have been instant hits.

Hadiqa Kiani Making Waves With Wajd Chapter 4

The fourth chapter of Wajd, Kamli, is a tribute to Baba Bulleh Shah. The other artists in Kamli are Steive George on the Saz Baglama, Baqir Abbas on the flute, Asif Ali Goga on the Qawaali Jori, Irfan Kiani and Imran Ali on the harmonium. The credits for breaking vocals go to Irfan, Sakhawat, Sharafat and Imran .The Sufi legend’s poetry, alongwith Hiadiqa’s deep vocals and her simplistic attire in the spiritual backdrop of Irfan Kiani’s music production gives the video an ethereal quality. You will certainly appreciate it, especially the tribute at the start.
