Popular Turkish drama serial Dirilis Ertugrul is favourite drama serial of Pakistanis these days. It is often described as “Turkish Game of Thrones.”
The drama series is all about stories of the Muslim Oghuz Turks, fighting invading Mongols, Christian Byzantines and the fanatic Knights Templar Crusaders in Anatolia (now modern-day Turkey) of the 12th century.

Mufti Abdul Qavi is often part of controversies and this time he has again become part of another controversy.
In his interview, he said that beverages which contain less than 40% of alcohol are “halal”.
His statement was quite shocking and even the host was shocked after listening to it.
Qavi made these claims when he was giving an interview to an online portal. He said this in response to some fatwa issued by clerics in Saudi Arabia about beverages containing 40% alcohol are halal.
Mufti Abdul Qavi said, “In my view, the beverage which has less than 40% alcohol is halal. By halal means, you can drink it.”
He added, “The alcohol which is derived from minerals is absolutely halal.”
He compared paan with alcohol and said, “The other ulemas eat paan (betel leaf) which contains tobacco is halal then I can say alcohol is halal too.”
Sahir Lodhi’s morning show “Aapka Sahir” came under fire because of having dance segment in his show.
In the dance segment, young girls danced on Bollywood item songs which viewers didn’t like and he was severely criticized.
In a recent interview, Sahir Lodhi clarified everything and said:
“In that dance show, I didn’t interfere much I was just a host. In that show, parents were there and it was a doctored video which went viral.”
He questioned, “What kind of mentality is this that we think something bad while watching kids dancing? We are wrong if we think like this.”
“There are so many leading channels who had dance performances in their shows and nobody wrote about it. Somehow, people went after me whatever the reason was. I never disrespected anyone on my show I always wanted to keep it as a family show. Then, I decided not to do at all because I don’t want ratings on that cost.”
Sahir Lodhi also shared that he received many offers after that but he refused to do any more dance shows.
He added, “You would not believe how much money they were giving me but I believe at the end of the day you have certain responsibilities as a host.”
Pakistan’s former cricket captain Shahid Afridi is considered as a conservative father because he forbids his daughters to play sports.
Due to social and religious reasons, he doesn’t allow his daughters to play outdoor games. For this statement, he faced severe criticism from many people.
In a recent live session, Shahid Afridi talked about how he treats his daughters and clarified his stance.
He said, “We have some people who get a little education and start speaking the western language, it is difficult to control them. First thing I never comment on anyone’s life.”

Amjad Sabri was a famous qawwal and naat khawan of Pakistan. He belonged to the famous family of Sabri brothers and later emerged as South Asia’s popular qawwali singer.

We say this because we find no other reason for veteran actor Naumaan Ijaz taking a jibe at fellow actors Adnan Siddiqui and Humayun Saeed by stating that they need to learn to act.
In a live session with Vasay Chaudhry, Naumaan stated that Humayun Saeed needed to learn how to act. “He is yet to learn it but I hope that he will learn,” stated Naumaan adding that Adnan Siddiqui too was in the same boat.
Of course, the comment didn’t sit well with anyone, not even the industry and the huge fan following Adnan Siddiqui and Humayun Saeed enjoy. The video clip from the interview went viral and media houses too picked up on the comment.
Following the backlash, Naumaan Ijaz again came live in another session with designer Munib Nawaz and stated that people (bloggers) had randomly taken a single quote and translated it out of context.
“These bloggers don’t have any business these days because actors generally pay them for their promotion. So they need to stir controversy just in order to run their ‘sasti dukaanein’ (small businesses),” said Naumaan.
However, even if Naumaan would have been joking, his comments came off as distasteful and Humayun Saeed and Adnan Siddiqui appeared miffed with the Sang E Mar Mar actor.
“If God has blessed you with izzat (respect), then you need to appreciate this and respect others. I have always been very respectful towards everyone and in return, I have received more respect and love than I could have ever hoped for,” said Humayun Saeed.
“Whether Naumaan was laughing or was serious, he was right about one thing: I am still learning and I hope that I will continue learning. He, meanwhile, was very well-learned in the very first serial that he acted in and he still is the same in his latest projects. I don’t want to be like that. I don’t want to ever feel like I have learned everything, because if I do I will not be able to surprise people with new work,” the Meray Paas Tum Ho actor added.
Adnan Siddiqui too had something to add, “We, as human beings, at times forget that we have an Almighty who is watching over us and blessing us. At times, we make fun of our fraternity members which I feel is uncalled for. I don’t think that I am a good actor but I am extremely thankful to Allah for blessing me with love and respect in abundance. And who are we to make fun of someone who has been blessed by Allah,” questioned Adnan.
“We don’t make fun of family members in public, we always do it in private. Similarly, when we as a fraternity criticise someone’s work we do it in private and not in public. People sometimes try to get away from what they have said by claiming that it was a joke but one can see through what the person really meant under the garb of a joke,” stated the actor as a matter of fact.

In a rather sad turn of events, veteran Pakistani actor, writer and poet Athar Shah Khan passed away in Karachi on Sunday (today), May 10, 2o20.
Lovingly known as Jedi, Athar Shah had been keeping unwell for a while now and lost his life today after suffering from a severe stroke.

Finally an episode with some interesting developments and quite a few scenes which suggested that the drama will now be moving forward to the next phase. The characters continue to be one-dimensional, their journeys, however, might be slightly more interesting now that there has been a major clash of values. The background score yet again was too loud and unnecessary at times. All the scenes, however, contributed something new to the story. I am waiting to see more variations in the characters, hopefully in the upcoming episodes.
Anaya Says Yes But….
The whole ‘blackmailing track’ was used to make Anaya fall in love with Hasan. Although she already liked him, everything that Hasan did to help her out in this episode and the previous one definitely leads Anaya to make her final decision. Mawra Hocane was convincing as the girl who was in love and ready to settle down. I am glad that the writer has shown that a girl who wants to be independent is not averse to the idea of getting married. A girl can get married and pursue her dreams at the same time. Anaya and Hasan yet again proved to be rather immature because they did not think things through. I really liked the scene in which Anaya told her mother about Hasan. Anaya’s bonding with her parents has been the best aspect of this drama. Their scenes are always realistic and all the actors involved share remarkable on-screen chemistry. That is the reason why it would have been so much better if Anaya’s father was in the picture too when she disclosed this news. A heart-to-heart talk with her parents, especially her father prior to their meeting with Hasan’s parents should have been shown.
I was unsure about Hasan’s father until last week since there were times when he appeared to be a reasonable person. However, the way he played games tonight was yet another move that wasn’t well-thought-out. That is the main issue I have with this script, the characters can at times act in ways that doesn’t make a lot of sense. Also, this was the kind of scenario which has been done-to-death in our dramas. Most often we see the boy’s mother doing what Hasan’s father did tonight. Anaya’s father’s reaction made perfect sense, Muhammad Ahmed made this scene really emotional. The handshake was an interesting addition to this scene, it showed the coldness with which Hasan’s father greeted Anaya’s father, something which he felt instantly.
Miraal’s Narcissism
Miraal is definitely a narcissist who isn’t only in love with herself but she constantly feels the need to have things her way. The way her naani’s words came to haunt her repeatedly in this episode also reflected the underline guilt she felt but it wasn’t something she was going to address. Although she kept on thinking about all the warnings her naani gave her, there was absolutely no change in her attitude. On the contrary, she is still on a mission to prove her deceased naani wrong. However, I always feel that there was a need to show more direct interactions between Miraal and her naani, then these flashbacks would have been more impactful.
I hope that as the story progresses Miraal’s state of mind will be explored even more. Self-importance above everything else and lack of empathy are the two most significant traits of a narcissist. The fact that Miraal was willing to kill Anaya to get her out of the way suggested that she really does need professional help. She controls everyone around her and she cannot come into terms with the fact that Hasan has for a change made up his mind about something without her help. Her father’s dialogues when he met Anaya’s parents clearly showed where that mentality came from. Her father is definitely an enabler.
Miraal’s mother’s apology tonight was a nice surprise since most often she does not have much to say. The mother is a good woman who can clearly see that her daughter and husband are on the wrong track but she is too submissive. This character most often seems like a caricature, unlike Anaya’s parents who have definite personalities and presence.
The writer through Miraal’s conversation with her friend has tried to convey that there has been some change in her personality after her naani passed away but that change cannot really be seen. Apart from the fact that Miraal is lost at times, she is just as self-absorbed and shallow as she was before. Sarah Khan looked really attractive in some of the scenes tonight but her character isn’t turning out to be as appealing as I was hoping it would be.
Final Remarks
This was an entertaining episode overall and there was a major shift in the story. It was however not free of clichés. Hasan will leave his house after finding out what actually happened and then perhaps Miraal’s father will suffer a big loss in the business at some point, that is what the scenes in the office tonight suggested. There must be a reason why the developments in the office are being given so much screen time. The preview of the next episode was intense, I am waiting to see how the story unfolds.

The writer Imran Nazeer is known for always touching upon the topics which are hardly discussed & dramatized. The elements that set the scripts of Imran Nazeer apart are the inclination towards spirituality while also exploring the mystery and mysticism that come along. All these when gelled together form a very unique storyline which hit home for the audience & intrigue them. Kashf is a melodrama and it needed a director with a vision to take it further, therefore in that aspect Danish Nawaz has not disappointed. Every step of the way, the viewers get to see what a huge difference it makes when an experienced director takes up a script & does justice to the essence of the script.
Cast & Characters
The story of this drama is about Kashf (Hira Mani). Kashf belongs to a humble household. Her family consists of a grandmother (Samina Ahmed), father Imtiyaz (Waseem Abbas), mother Dilshad (Munazzah Arif) and two sisters Irum (Tania Hussain) & Zoya (Sabeena Farooq). Kashf also has an aunt Ashi (Hajra Khan), who along with her mother is not only her friend but a confidant. Ashi was married to Matiullah (Saleem Mairaj) but after suffering domestic violence and abuse, she got divorced and decided to become financially self-sufficient because she knew that in order to survive in her brother’s house, she had to fend for herself.
The other family is of Kashf’s fiance Wajdan (Junaid Khan). Wajdan is the first paternal cousin of Kashf and his father Fayyaz (Shehryaar Zaidi) happens to be Imtiyaz’s elder brother. His wife is Rashida (Lubna Aslam) & they also have a daughter Shumaila (Maryam Noor).
Story So Far
Kashf has always seen the dreams that she saw eventually turning into reality. It used to be something that her family never took seriously but over the period of time, all the dreams that Kashf shared with her family started to unfold in real life, which then made everyone realize that this is not something to be ignored or taken lightly. Kashf never knew that the dreams that she sees are going to affect her life personally & there would be so much meaning to each one of her dreams that despite not wanting to, she will have to believe each & every vision that she dreams.
The life that Kashf dreamt of was nothing in comparison to how her reality is unraveling to be. She is engaged to her cousin Wajdan and just wanted to lead a normal life with him but now, that seems beyond impossible for her. Kashf has understood that it won’t be so easy for her to get married, however Wajdan remains persistent that he is going to do what it takes to stay true to the promise he has made to her.
Kashf’s mother Dilshad & aunt Ashi are her support system. They understand her ordeals & realize that Kashf can not deal with everything on her own, therefore they have to be there for her. Ashi has seen the bitter side of the world, her marriage didn’t last & the relationship she shared with her husband was abusive & horrifying. Her ex-husband Matiullah still keeps tabs on Ashi’s entire family & he is one of those hypocrites who have fabricated an image of himself in front of the world but the only person who knows his reality is his ex-wife.
The turning point in Kashf life happens to be the dream that she sees about Wajdan’s sister Shumaila not getting married & when that turns out to be true, everyone assumes it must’ve been a coincidence but it gives Wajdan’s mother Rashida an excuse to call this engagement off because right from the beginning, she doesn’t approve of Kashf as her daughter in law.
Kashf’s father is someone who runs away from his responsibilities, this is the reason, the women of the house tend to do everything to facilitate themselves & because of his ego, he still believes he is the decision maker of the family. A conservative father who is only concerned about making money from every shortcut he can think of.
Ashi & Dilshad have started accompanying Kashf to her visits to Qari Sahab. He is the one who puts her heart at ease & advises her not to share her dreams because he can see that this reality of hers is only bringing misery her way. Everyone eventually believes Kashf when she ends up sharing yet another dream related to her mother’s sister Surraya Khala that she is going to face an accident. Surraya khala decides to postpone her trip to London & that’s when she gets to know that the plane she was supposed to travel in crashed. Surraya lets the word out & now people have started to speculate & make assumptions about Kashf.
Wajdan on the other hand takes a different route, which he deems right. It shows that at least for now, he is ready to do what it takes to make Kashf believe that he will stay by her side. Wajdan takes her to the psychiatrist because he wants some sort of clarity but even that session doesn’t turn out to be fruitful because what Kashf is facing falls out of the realm of medical science. However, it shows Wajdan’s support, his eagerness as well as the love that he has for Kashf but so far, he is unaware of the dream that Kashf has seen about their fate.
The Execution
Danish Nawaz in his previous drama Khass proved what a diligent & mature director he is. Therefore it was imperative that he’d give Kashf the exact treatment to extract as much essence of the story as possible. The drama despite having a melodramatic feel immediately drew my attention & the way all the characters & their stories were introduced made it even interesting. The script of Kashf is definitely new & the dialogues of the drama are carefully worded. All the dream sequences have been shot beautifully & give away just the right amount of information. Considering the fact that they are the focal point of this entire drama, they have been executed to perfection & not only draw the attention but also compel the viewers to think about what’s coming ahead in Kashf’s life.
Kashf’s journey is going to be a rollercoaster ride of emotions & the way everything is panning out, it has allowed the viewers to connect to these characters very easily. You feel for Ashi, Dilshad & Kashf everytime they put on a brave face but are breaking from the inside. It shows that these women have accepted their reality but still have not given up on hope. Kashf is scared as well as scarred because she does not see herself in the position that she has foreseen for herself, but is now coming to terms with it. The best scene so far for me was the conversation that Kashf & Qari Sahab had, where he told her exactly why she was special & what was in her that made her suitable for what she has been blessed with. Kashf has humility, humbleness & a clean heart. She does not hold grudges, believes in forgiving & giving benefit of doubt. Kashf, like an ordinary human being that she is only focuses on her faults but is then reminded that she can not see the niceness that others around her see in her.
So far 5 episodes of Kashf have gone on-air & each one of them has been carefully executed. They are not giving away too much but have shown enough for the viewers to speculate & also come up with their predictions related to Kashf’s journey. It is obvious that marriage is not on cards & she will become a source of income for her family; it will be her father Imtiyaz who will put her on such a pedestal & being a dutiful daughter that she is, she will oblige. Maybe over the period of time, Kashf will find herself all alone doing the heavy lifting because everyone will eventually get involved in their lives, with no one there to share her emotional burdens & help her through her struggles.
Hira Mani has given one of the strongest performances of her career in Kashf so far & with the kind of acting that she is doing, it is obvious that it’s only going to get better. Hira Mani is a gifted performer & she is a perfect choice for this role because the way she has adapted to this character makes it look like it was written for her. Waseem Abbas’s performance is another one of my favorites. I like his comic timing in the drama & it is always enjoyable seeing his mean tactics. Munnazah Arif & Hajra Khan have also given their absolute best & it’s good to see Hajra Khan playing such a strong character in this drama. The story & all the characters of Kashf are quite substantial & this is the reason why in such a short span of time, this drama has created quite a hype. Ertugrul Ghazi (Dirilis Ertugrul) is a Turkish series that recently aired in Pakistan. The series has been dubbed in Urdu for the Pakistani viewers.
