We always advocated that a husband and wife should build a home together, even if the husband had a low income. We made a mistake while finding a perfect match for our daughter. I couldn’t judge a boy by his family or outward appearance. I thought if he’s talking elegantly, his family is educated, he is the right guy. Sara Rubab, who was a lead Graphic Designer and 2d animator at Unicorn Black (Company owned by singer Haroon Rashid), voice of Ashu in Burka Avenger, voiced the lead character Tania in Teetoo and Tania, passed away in a tragic road accident.
Singer Haroon Rashid taking to his official Instagram handle shared the sad news of Sara’s death with his fans and followers. “All of us at Unicorn Black are extremely heartbroken at the passing of one of our shining young stars, Sara Rubab, in a tragic road accident. Sara was extremely intelligent, positive and incredibly talented. She joined the Unicorn Black team as a young voice actor in 2012 but after doing her animation and graphic design degree she became the head of graphic design at UB and worked on multiple projects”, says Haroon.
Haroon Rashid further added that “She was like a little sister to me and a family member to all of us at UB. We will forever miss her big smile and cheerful attitude, and are indebted to her for her invaluable contributions to UB projects. Sending many prayers to her family in this difficult time.”

The series Burka Avenger was produced by Unicorn Black Studios, the 13 episode series aired on Geo Tez of Geo Network TV in 2013. It had been noticed by the international viewers when it went on air. It was praised for a different story and the cause which it promoted. In an article published in Hufington Post Lindsey Davis said, “Part karate kid and part superhero, Pakistan’s first animated television series is a better role model for girls than any princess Disney’s ever drawn”.
Burka Avenger shows a young teacher clad up in a burka, she is brave and intelligent and fights all those people who are against educating children. Her superpowers consist of everything related to education. Burka Aveneger proved to be a great hit with the kids in Pakistan. The series had its own games and it was translated in many different languages.

The Burka Avenger series became known internationally as soon as it went on air. This series was praised by International critics for setting new trends. Usually women are shown as weak characters in fairytales and cartoons. All known cartoon hereos are men but Burka Avenger introduced a girl who was empowered in more ways than one. Burka Avenger uses her education to fight people who want to take away the rights of the poor and weak.
Haroon Rashid, who is better known as a singer was the main force behind this series. He came up with the original idea, he gave voices to some of the main characters in the animated series and he is also the producer of the show.
The Peabody Award is given to those series or films that are meant for television or radio which attempt to educate people. These awards have been around for 70 years now. Peabody awards are considered very prestigious. According to the Peabody website “Every year, over a thousand submissions—including TV shows, radio programs, and various types of web content—are reviewed first by 90 faculty, staff, and students judges at the University of Georgia. Their committees make recommendations to the Peabody Board who are responsible for selecting the final winners”.
This year Burka Avenger was amongst the very few series which bagged this award. Haroon Rashid, the man behind the show received the award on behalf of the Unicorn Black team.
Burka Avenger has been ruling Pakistani cinema since its release as one of the best animated Urdu movies. Now it has got another feather in its cap. The series was awarded the Art & Design Award at the 3rd edition of the National Innovation Awards, 2017 in Karachi.
This has been a great achievement as the series has also won the prestigious Peabody Award as well. Speaking of this new recognition, the director Haroon said, “It is an incredible honor to receive this award and it is a great effort by the Pakistan Innovation Foundation to encourage innovation in the country. Burka Avenger is a 100% made Pakistani product and it only became possible due to the hard work of the incredible team at Unicorn Black.”
Unfortunately our television channels have never shown much interest in providing children with quality entertainment. Our schools also stress more on English than on Urdu and as a result most of the children who go to private schools find it difficult to grasp Urdu, which in my opinion is a much more difficult language to learn than English. Cartoons and animations in Urdu which teach children good lessons are the need of the hour. The electronic media can play a vital role in educating the kids. By education, I don’t mean teaching them ABCs but by helping them understand the difference between good and bad. Learning this difference goes a long way. It helps children become good individuals when they grow up.
I have never been a big fan of fairy tales because they send the wrong message to little girls in particular. Almost all of them send out the message that being pretty is very important. None of the fairytale princesses were ever average looking. In fact the other day when my niece was reading Snow White I was actually amazed at the way her beauty had been explained! Thanks to these fairy tales at a very early age girls start obsessing with having long hair. They also start differentiating (unconsciously of course) among friends or class fellows on the basis of color; who is whiter and who is “brown” is sadly very common nowadays.
Other than this all the fairy tales end with the damsel in distress being rescued by her prince charming because her happy ending is not possible without a prince charming.
Burka Avenger comes as a breath of fresh air considering just how clichéd these fairy tales are. Our super hero is no damsel in distress but she helps those who are in trouble. She is strong enough to take care of herself and other people too. She does not have long locks of beautiful hair and rose colored lips but she wears a burka to hide her identity and looks great in it. I think the concept that this super hero is actually a school teacher by profession is sheer brilliance because kids all age look up to their teachers. They are their ideals and now they can be super heroes too – how cool is that!
The Burka Avenger has been launched in a very intelligent way too. It has a facebook page which has a lot of fans already, there are Burka Avenger phone games and t shirts and it has a great soundtrack of its own. Annie Jaffrey is the voice behind our super hero. The Pakistani pop star Haroon Rashid came up with this idea.
The Burka Avenger does not use weapons to fight her enemies but her weapons are pens, pencils and books. This clearly shows that the idea behind the concept is that with education we can fight all kinds of evil. Burka Avenger’s first episode was very impressive. The creator of the animation has made it clear that main purpose of this animation apart from educating the kids is also going to be to entertain them. Following is the description given in the official page of the animation, “The Burka Avenger is an amazing action-comedy animated TV Series that follows the adventures of the Burka Avenger and three young kids in the imaginary city of Halwapur as they fight the evil Baba Bandook and his henchmen.The Burka Avenger wears the burka veil to hide her identity like superheroes do. Her alter ego is that of a mild-mannered teacher at a girls’ school. Her use of pens and books as projectile weapons to fight the bad guys is symbolic on many levels. Her main motto is “Justice, Peace and Education for all”. The good news is that the series Burka Avenger is all set to go global with plans for it to be screened in 60 countries. It will be translated in 18 different languages.
If your kids/younger siblings/nieces/ nephews etc didn’t get a chance to watch the first episode of this amazing series, I suggest that you make them watch it online because it will entertain them and teach them some thing positive. It airs on Geo Tez at 6 pm on Sundays. The production house (Unicorn Black Production) has taken a great initiative by introducing this series. In Burhan, she was able to bring all those characteristics which she has seen in her own beloved father.
Burcu Kıratli is a Turkish actress and model. She is best known for her roles in Peri Masalı, Diriliş: Ertugrul and Aşk ve Mavi.
She earned international fame for her portrayal of Gokce Hatun in the historical adventure television series Diriliş: Ertugrul & received Best Actress Award by the Ankara Ministry of Youth and Sports & was also awarded the Best Actress of the Year Award by the votes received from the poll opened by the ministry.
After playing her character in Ertugrul, she got a lot of fame all around the world including Pakistan.

Kiratly has learnt the art of acting from the Müjdat Gezen Art Academy and also worked there as a permanent actress for 2 years.
Burcu Kiratli started her acting career with theatre plays “Mustafa Kemal’im” and “Gözlerimi Kaparim Vazifemi Yaparim”.
She has also featured in the movies “Su ve Ates”, “Peri Masali”, “Bizim Hikaye” and in the Turkish TV series “Elde Var Hayat” and “Dirilis Ertugrul” for which she has earned a lot of fame not only in Turkey but in Pakistan as well.
Kiratli last starred in the Turkish TV series “Ask ve Mavi” in which she essayed the central role of “Mavi” on the channel ATV.
