One of 2019’s block buster Do Bol needs no introduction. A Sarwat Nazeer script which in simplest of manners showed the struggles of a girl who belonged to such a family which never made her feel that she belonged to them. How her father’s attitude shaped her personality and how one mistake of her landed her with such a person that she despised and then falls in love with. Do Bol’s story showed all sorts of emotions and because all of that was executed in such a simple and relatable manner, it ended up garnering immense popularity. Gaiti and Badar’s couple was well and truly loved by the audience. It was also brilliantly shown by Sarwat Nazeer that how love at times can make you selfish and how it also makes you selfless. Badar loved Gaiti selfishly and selflessly which made it quite interesting to see and explore. Do Bol is a perfect example of how simple scripts when rightly executed can turn into a blockbuster drama. Anaa’s story is relatively simple but it has a definite appeal. The new faces in this drama and solid performances from some of the more experienced actors make this drama interesting. Anaa isn’t the kind of play which is perfect in every way but it definitely has a lot going for it. Naimal Khawar and Usman Mukhtar’s on-screen chemistry has made the viewers fall in love with their track even though it can be really repetitive at times. Hania Aamir’s portrayal is brilliant as usual, she makes you feel for her character and keeps your interest alive. Anaa is a nice break from some of the more heavy duty dramas, it is an entertaining play which keeps you looking forward to more. Inkaar is one of the more heavy duty dramas in this list which deals with a sensitive topic and does so with great responsibility. The writer has taken inspiration from real-life incidents and has done complete justice to a difficult script. Inkaar highlights the importance of consent in a relationship and shows why some men find it impossible to respect women the way they deserve to be respected. Yumna Zaidi, Imran Ashraf, Sami Khan, Munazzah Arif and Rehan Sheikh’s performances in this drama give it the edge it needs to stand out. Khud Parast

Writer: Radain Shah

Director: Abis Raza

Producer: Big Bang Entertainment

Cast: Shehzad Sheikh, Ramsha Khan, Hassan Ahmed, Nausheen Shah, Sajid Syed, Asma Abbas, Saife Hassan & others.

Rating: 4 Stars

Khud Parast was one such drama that had an interesting story line and intense performances to its credit. Even though in the beginning it did come across as if the team was trying to show hijab as a symbol of oppression but later the story changed and it showed how imposing something on someone while committing mistakes yourself is not the way to preach someone to come to the right path. Khud Parast’s plot basically revolved around hypocrisy and the destruction it brings along in the lives of those who rely on it. Ramsha Khan and Shehzad Sheikh carried this drama on their shoulders. Asma Abbas did complete justice to the character of Bakhtawar and she made her scenes absolutely intense. The direction of Khud Parast remained consistently good and never did the director go off-track. Khud Parast definitely deserves a spot in this list because it sure was a very good drama.

Khuda Parast Best Pakistani Dramas

Baba Jani

Writer: Faiza Iftikhar

Director: Ali Faizan Anchan

Producer: Connect Studios

Cast: Faysal Qureshi, Madiha Imam, Savera Nadeem, Saba Hameed, Faryal Mehmood, Tipu Sharif, Jinaan Hussain, Amir Qureshi, Arisha Razi, Ali Ansari, Afshan Qureshi, Shehryar Zaidi & others.

Rating: 3.5 Stars

Baba Jani was Faysal Qureshi’s first production and he deserves all the credit for choosing a mature script and not starting his production career with a typical drama. Baba Jani was an entertaining family drama which had a one-of-a-kind hero. Most of the Pakistani dramas revolve around female protagonists but this one had a different and appealing male protagonist. There were times when the editing as well as the direction wasn’t up to the mark but overall Baba Jani was a superb play with some really positive messages. Faysal Qureshi, Madiha Imam and Savera Nadeem’s performances and characters in particular were an absolute treat to watch. If this show wasn’t stretched so much then it would have been even better.

Tawaan

Writer: Rahat Jabeen

Director: Syed Wahab Jaffri

Producer: Momina Duraid Productions

Cast: Moomal Khalid, Emaad Irfani, Sajida Syed, Hina Bayat, Hina Altaf, Munawwar Saeed, Asad Siddique, Fazila Qazi, Farhaan Ali Agha & others.

Rating: 4 Stars

Tawaan was a feel good drama that revolved around the struggles of two individuals who in the most unfavourable circumstances end up together and then fall in love. Tawaan was one such drama that did show the couple facing its fair share of hardships but still overcoming everything because they believed in open communication. Even though the lead couple of Maryam and Shehroz and their chemistry was the best thing about Tawaan, the elderly couple of Shehroz’s parents and their bickering was such an enjoyable aspect of Tawaan as well. Tawaan came as a surprise where it just showed how two level-headed individuals made everything work for them by relying on patience and positivity. Moomal Khalid and Emaad Irfani played the characters of Maryam and Shehroz to perfection and their chemistry was sweet yet strong. Tawaan was such a drama that had a complex story but the manner with which it was told simply and executed brilliantly made it very special.

Suno Chanda 2 provided the kind of entertainment it promised by giving the viewers a lot to laugh about. It stayed true to its theme and the script was engaging enough. Shadana’s character in particular kept the viewers coming back for more. Nadia Afghan’s performance was the highlight of this show and some of the new characters were interesting as well. It won’t be wrong to say that in this season Arsal and Jiya’s relationship was somewhat repetitive and it lost its previous appeal. Arjumand Rahim, Raza Talish and Sabeena Farooq’s characters and their performances were an entertaining addition to this serial. Suno Chanda 2 was the kind of mindless entertainment which had enough going for it to keep the viewers engaged right till the end.

Sang e Marmar Episode 01 – An Impressive Start!

Ohkay so, the writing of Mustafa Afridi, direction of Saife Hassan & production of Momina Duraid; Sang e Marmar hit out tv screens tonight. The very first episode introduced the main characters effortlessly. There definitely is a lot more that has yet to unravel, but after watching the first episode, I am definitely looking forward to the tracks of few characters especially.

The drama is set in Ghari Baraan, a small town in the the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, that is still run on the basis of patriarchal ideology. The leader of the town Baraan Khan dies & that is when his son Gulistan Khan (Noman Ijaz) informs his son Aurang Khan (Mikaal Zulfikar) to come to Ghari Baraan to attend the funeral of his grandfather. Aurang returns to his village after 2 years & going by the way things run in his village & house, it was obvious that Aurang was indifferent to everything, especially his father. Gulistan Khan is someone who holds his family values & the principals set by his father close to his heart, so much so that he has developed this rigidity in his personality in order to keep the ideology of his father alive.

Collage 01

Aurang has two more brothers & a sister; Saifullah Khan (Omair Rana), Gohar Khan & Sherbano (Uzma Hassan). Sherbano is married to her first cousin Torah Khan & it seems like Torah Khan has a past related to his mother that he hasn’t been able to forget & move on from. Gulistan Khan has kept his other sons closer but just because Aurang has chosen a different path in his life, both; the father & the son do not share a cordial relationship with each other. Aurang returns to his village after 2 years & the welcome that he gets shows him the place he holds in his father’s heart, because Gulistan Khan only has a pile of objections related to him, be it related to his dressing, or his detachment from his family or his perspective. Saifullah & Gohar seem to be doing exactly what their father Gulistan wants, but Aurang has other plans & those plans most certainly do not include being involved in the family matters.

Collage 02

Looks like Aurang has a lady love (Kubra Khan) in Ghari Baraan, who is involved in a one-sided love for him. She happens to be Aurang’s childhood friend but ever since, she has only kept him near to her heart. Saif ur Rehman (Tipu Sharif) happens to be the lady love’s brother & the moment he finds out that his sister & her friend gave a ride to Gulistan Khan’s son Aurang because he was running late for his grandfather’s funeral, he gets furious. It looks like Saif ur Rehman does not share a cordial relationship with Gulistan & in general, Gulistan & Baraan Khan have made quite a few enemies throughout their lives but then it is obvious because power & authority always come with a territory.

Sherbano is definitely not happy with her husband & just because she knows that she has a strong backing of her father & her brothers, she gives her husband a hard time, who already is aloof to the world as he is engrossed in the pain of his past, related to his mother. Torah Khan seems to be the most intriguing character & I am definitely looking forward to his track. His entry was quite interesting too where he saved the thief using logic that no one could say no to. I liked how they slightly touched the fact that the people who are known for their religious knowledge tend to change their stance according to their convenience. Mullah didn’t mind suggesting the chopping of hands as per the Islamic rulings but the moment Torah Khan gave him a little bait, he fell for it & that makes Mullah quite a controversial person because it is obvious that he will never stop any barbarism that Gulistan will instigate because he is always going to maintain his rapport with him, as he knows Gulistan’s power quite well.

I liked the bonding of Aurang with his mother (Sania Saeed). She is the only one Aurang feels for & loves endearingly because she is the only one who not only understands Aurang but supports him completely too. Aurang’s mother isn’t oblivious to the detest Aurang has towards his father, that is why she tries to reason with him & try to make him understand his father’s perspective too. Their scenes together were heart-warming & done really really well.

Collage 03

Finally, Sherbano got what she wanted & that was an apology that too after she degraded her husband & she being the one who initiated the fight. Sherbano wants her husband to know that she has the power & she will exploit it to her heart’s content. Gulistan Khan definitely is someone who doesn’t know how to differentiate between emotions & practicality because despite knowing what Gohar did, he made sure that Torah apologizes to Sherbano. Gulistan obviously looks down on his brother’s children because it looks like his brother did something in his life that he certainly doesn’t or didn’t approve of & I am sure it will have something to do with the choice of his life partner, that is Torah’s mother. Torah also has a sister who seems a bit too interested in her cousin Aurang, but we’ll have to see who will eventually become Aurang’s life partner.

Overall, this episode was quite interesting. Even though the setting & the theme of the drama is on the serious side & I am sure it will keep on getting dense as the episodes will progress, but I liked the precise approach of the director where in just a few scenes, he told us about the mentality that Gulistan Khan endorses. I must say I’m glad to see Hassan Noman in this drama, even though he has a side role to play but I am sure he will leave a great impact. It was a treat to watch him in Preet Na Kariyo Koi & I am sure things would be no different in this drama as well. I must say, I am glad that the drama makers are moving outside the vicinity of Karachi city & exploring more places in our dramas, it changes the mood completely & gives you something refreshing to watch. The acting of all the actors was great & I am eager to see what Noman Ijaz has in store for his fans. Definitely looking forward to the next episode. Please share your thoughts about the first episode of Sang e Marmar.

Saya-e-Dewar Bhi Nahin Episode 4 – Unimpressive!

This episode opened with Haider submitting to the decision of the jirga because he could not see his Taya suffer the consequences of his actions. The conversation between Bibi jaan and her daughter and the ones between Tahira and her mother had absolutely no impact for two reasons. Bibi Jaan’s character is very confusing; I am still not sure which side of her is real!! I am all for grey characters but she goes from loving Shehla to treating her like she is a nobody in no time. After everything she said to Shehla in the previous episode, it was impossible to relate to her feelings for her “daughter”! She was shown saying to Shah Sb that she didn’t want to raise Shehla but had to because he forced her to and now tonight she told Shehla she lost a baby and when Shah Sb brought Shehla she felt like she got her baby girl back! Bibi Jaan’s character isn’t making a lot of sense right now. The actress playing Tahira does not know how to act, I am surprised that she is getting so much work! There is absolutely no variation in her acting, her dialogue delivery is flat and her expressions confusing. Same is true for the actress playing her mother.

The visit to the Mazar and all of Shehla’s conversation with the maid seemed like filler scenes – I am still wondering why they got so much screen time. All of Shehla’s efforts, her emotions and even her conversation with Haider fell flat because of Naveen Waqar’s terrible portrayal and dialogues which were not very touching. She looked good playing the bubbly Shehla but she isn’t very impressive playing the emotional fool who has no control over herself. Shah Sb’s concern for his children and his helplessness was the only part of this episode which I could relate to, rest of it did not work for me at all.

sd

Mansoor and his father just like Bibi Jaan are showing their true colors now. Mansoor’s father does not respect his wife or women in general which is why Mansoor is the same. I am wondering now how could Shah Sb not know this about him since they are bachpan ke dost! Once again a character which was shown as a positive one has been turned into a villain all of a sudden. Mansoor is greedy and he does not respect women therefore Shehla is going to face a very tough time once she gets married to him. Emaad Irfani’s acting too was unimpressive in this episode and Irfan Khoosat is a complete misfit for playing this role. Mansoor found out in tonight’s episode that Shehla was not Shah Sb’s real daughter but that doesn’t change much because he is not marrying her, he is marrying the money and status which he will get automatically once he marries her.

So far, this drama is getting worse with every passing episode already! None of the characters or actors are standing out in any of the roles. There is zero chemistry between the actors and even the most emotional scenes fail to have an impact. The preview of the next episode promised some drama – Shehla will do something extreme after Haider tells her once again that they don’t have a future together. So far the only episode of this drama which was better out of all the 4 which have gone air was the 1st one. The previous episode was full of loop holes and this one was unimpressive to say the least.

How many of you watched this episode of SDBN? Do share your thoughts about it.

P.S. The review of Tum Kon Piya will be posted tomorrow.

Worst Dramas Of The Season

Gone are the days when every other Pakistani drama would guarantee its viewers some quality entertainment. From the last few years, where we have seen some great dramas, our industry has churned out some worst dramas as well. There was a time when we hardly came across those dramas that could be labeled as worst because the priorities of our drama-makers were different where their first & foremost focus used to be on the viewer satisfaction, as they knew that they were making these dramas for the viewers & not for themselves, but sadly, that is not the case anymore because our drama industry has turned into another lucrative business & our drama-makers have turned into businessmen where in this day & age the thing they care the most about is the rating. The higher the rating, the greater the misapprehension of believing that the viewers want them to ruin the charm of the drama & also deviate the story from the main plot with which it started, that is why these days, the moment our drama-makers smell the reek of TRP’s, they decide to stretch the drama like a chewing gum, which only in the end deserves to be dumped into the trash can by the viewers, but hey who cares, as far as they are getting the ratings right?

We have two categories of worst dramas these days, in the first category, the dramas are ruined because of the ratings & in the second category, we have those dramas that do not have any substance or story to begin with, but are promoted by the makers as if they will break all the records of popularity, only for the viewers to find out that they were fooled by the drama-makers.

So, in order to pay tribute to these rating-ruined chewing gums, here is the list of the worst 5 dramas of the season & we’re sure that you will agree with the order of the list as well:

Mann Mayal

Writer: Samira Fazal
Director: Haseeb Hassan
Producer: Momina Duraid, Sana Shanawaz, Samina Humayun & Tariq Shah

Sjt4E

Drama serial Mann Mayal tops this list for innumerable reasons. The number one reason why Mann Mayal tops this list is that there were huge expectations attached to this play because this was Hamza Ali Abbasi’s first play after Pyare Afzal which was a massive hit, the director of Mann Mayal Haseeb Hassan was the man behind Diyar-e-Dil which was also a very successful drama and most importantly it was promoted aggressively by the producers as the love story of 2016 which would make viewers forget all the other love stories they had ever seen on their television screens. Everyone who was associated with this play made tall claims before this drama went on air. For a few weeks the drama did make sense and it seemed promising but the second Mannu got married and Salahuddin moved to Karachi, things took a turn for the worse and then from there on things just kept on getting more illogical.

The viewers who had started watching the show continued watching it out of curiosity and also because they hoped that it will get better therefore the drama got ratings and as a result the people at the helm of affairs decided it was time to give the viewers another 5 no 7 no maybe 10 more weeks of a drama they liked so much! This is when things completely stopped making sense altogether. Characters appeared and disappeared whenever they were needed to take the story forward, there was hardly any connection between different events and even the major developments in the play happened without a climax and there was no aftermath shown either. Choppy editing and zero continuation in the story made the drama unbearable to watch.

Mann Mayal 02

Mann Mayal

Writer: Samira Fazal
Director: Haseeb Hassan
Producer: Momina Duraid, Sana Shanawaz, Samina Humayun & Tariq Shah

Yes! Mann Mayal is first and second on the list because mentioning it only once wouldn’t be “fair” with the viewers who have put up with this torture for so many weeks! Apart from a weak story-line, choppy editing and a drama which has no direction another reason why Mann Mayal is the worst drama of this season and most likely the entire year is that some very talented actors disappointed their viewers by choosing to play characters which unfortunately have become their new introduction in a bad way!

Jeena is the first example – I will think twice before tuning into any drama which has Ayesha Khan in the cast!

Mannu – it is seriously upsetting to see someone like Maya Ali, who doesn’t need to bank on characters which rely solely on becharapan and rona dhona doing exactly that! One would expect such a thing from actresses who are still struggling but why would Maya Ali settle for something like this?

Salahuddin – Hamza Ali Abbasi has been the biggest disappointment as Salahuddin. Not only is his character weak but his acting is the opposite of effortless!! Too many expressions, too much effort and very little emotions make his acting as well his character an epic fail.

The parents – the parents in this drama are a joke! Mannu’s parents in particular have played a major role in making sure that Mannu stays a bechari for the longest time. Saba Hameed, who has been part of some very impressive projects and always gives her best looks bored and disinterested in this one because of obvious reasons. Mannu’s abba’s change of heart and personality from time to time has been very difficult to digest.

On the whole Mann Mayal banks on isolated events and there is no continuation. If you try to make sense out of this show you end up feeling very upset and frustrated. It has been a perfect example of a drama which was supposed to a hit but on the contrary is a huge failure!

Mann Mayal 01

Zara Yaad Kar:

Writer of Season 01: Khalil ur Rehman Qamar
Writer of Season 02: Amna Nawaz Khan
Director: Amna Nawaz Khan
Producer: Amna Nawaz Khan
THE LAST VIEWER CLAPPING AT THE END OF THE DRAMA: Amna Nawaz Khan

Zara Yaad Kar 01

The drama set in the 1780’s actually started looking like an insult to all the intellectuals who were watching this drama, because it was a poor attempt of the writer to show that he has got more brains than all the viewers combined. A drama that began with the story of a selfish character, making the viewers believe that she will face the consequences, turned into a Happy Halala story where now the ex-husband is on the hunt to find a temporary husband for his ex-wife. When the drama began, we all expected that KRQ-Factor, the wow-factor which drew the viewers’ attention in the first place because everyone is aware of the magic that KRQ’s scripts have created before, but as the episodes progressed, it turned into a chewing gum that was not only losing its elasticity but was losing its taste too. Just when the viewers expected the finale, season 2 of the drama began where the director, mistook herself as the writer & took over the script, hitting the last nail in the coffin because all of a sudden the main leads took the back seat & the forced side characters got the limelight & I might as well add that such side characters/actors where one is totally acting-free & the other is in literal sense breaking the bones, arms, legs of English & Urdu.

This drama could have made a bigger impact if the director had curbed the urge to turn it into a chewing gum because at this stage, this drama is beyond the level of tolerance & has completely lost its purpose. All the characters are now looking like a bunch of doormats, giving each other a tough competition as to which one is a better doormat than the other. Another strong (coughing sarcasm) point of this drama was its dialogues, that in the initial stages made quite an impact & kept the viewers hooked but as the episodes progressed & the story stopped making sense, these dialogues turned into a boring philosophy class that forced the viewers to scratch their heads in the state of confusion because where at one hand, things were as ridiculously simple as black & white, the falsafa class was getting more complicated & difficult to understand, so much so that even one of the characters in the latest episode blurted out ke philosophy jharna band karo & I say Amen to that. The slowwwwwwwwww-mo direction & reactions of all the actors serve as a very strong lullaby for all the viewers & not to forget the forlorn face of Haadi, colorless face of Aneesa, uncombed stands of Uzma, stark white face of Gaiti that gives Casper a tough competition, Gaiti’s angrez-chalay-gaye-mujhe-chorh-gaye accent & foundation-zada face of Waqar, all these things contribute in making this drama one of the worst dramas of this season!

Zara Yaad Kar 02

Mor Mahal:

Writer: Surmed Sebai
Director: Surmed Sultan Khoosat
Producer: Baber Javed

Mor_Mahal_first_look

This drama is a depiction of the fixation that our writers have with the saas-bahu sagas because the makers of Mor Mahal showed that no matter which century it is, or which era it is, saas-bahu tiffs are what the viewers are going to get & what the writers are going to write because they can not think of anyyyyyyyyyyyything else & they aren’t creative enough, boo hoo!!! I still remember the day when the innocent me saw the promotional posters of Mor Mahal on Facebook, that got me excited about the fact that we were going to get an amazing period drama of the recent times but as I started watching, I found out that this drama had a mother, who was fixated with her son’s millionth shab-e-uroosi & then we had a few wives who were crying buckets because they got married to a feminine husband who only looked manly from the surface but had a brain a size of a peanut & an attention span of a poodle. The promotional posters showed some battles & some manly stuff but when the actual drama began, it turned out to be an entire different story where the ladies were always in the limelight & their petty politics were getting the most coverage. The writer also tried to add in the quotient of fantasy in this drama which actually served no purpose at all because none of the situations were synced with each other. The entire focus of the creative team of Mor Mahal was on the set, costume & jewelry designing but then, how long did they expect that 2 rooms, 3 walls & 2 head-gears will keep the viewers hooked to the drama? In my opinion, the walls made of cardboard, the forest on Akhari’s head & the dim lighting also contributed a great deal in making this drama a worst drama of the season. My readers who have followed my reviews know it really well that my patience level is a bit too high but at the 14th episode of this drama, I gave up because just like Asif Jahan lost his marbles, I lost my level of patience as well. No wonder why this drama didn’t grab the attention of the viewers & didn’t earn much ratings, even though it was promoted as Star Trek of Pakistan but it turned out to be a perfect example of ‘khoda pahar, nikla chuha, wo bhi mara hua’!

Mor Mahal 02

Mor Mahal 03

Beqasoor

Writer: Sameena Ijaaz
Directed By: Syed Atif Hussain
Produced By: Big Bang Entertainment

Bay-Qasoor-Episode-1-11-November-2015-ARY-Digital

The OST of Beqasoor still haunts me – mein beqasoor – yes that is exactly how all the viewers who watched this drama must have felt after watching a few episodes of the show. The main idea of the play was done-to-death – two sisters who are completely opposite to each other, one the ultimate bechari and the other one had all the characteristics of a materialistic and selfish girl! The fact that the bechari Hira was far more annoying than the chalak Sehr made you wonder if the writer and the director had managed to achieve their objective! The negative characters in the play kept your interest alive in the early episodes and the other characters remained predictable and boring throughout the drama.

Black and white characters, twisted turns in the story, Saboor Ali and Samina Peerzada’s never-ending rona dhona, a story which was stretched even though it lacked substance and watching amazing actors like Sajid Hassan and Samina Peerzada settle for such a mediocre script was a huge disappointment. Like all other plays which show women suffer to the extreme – from getting married to a man old enough to be her dad to getting poisoned by her mom, Hira went through it all and more – this drama got the ratings which producers want more than anything else and therefore it ended only after losing all its “fans”!

The viewers expect better from Pakistani writers, directors and producers. They also want the actors they love so much and who are clearly very talented to choose their projects after giving it a lot of thought otherwise people will lose faith in them and will be disappointed as a result of their wrong choices. The good thing is that all the dramas in this list do not define our drama industry, we are still making great dramas and hope that there will be a time when our drama makers stop compromising on quality.

Are there any other dramas which you would like to add to this list? Feel free to share your thoughts.

Besharam Episode 17 – Intelligent Piece of Writing!

Ohkay so, despite being teensy tiny bit slow, this episode was amazing & power-packed. I love watching this drama & I am so glad that even though so many episodes have gone on-air it is still going strong. I like how situations & all the characters are evolving & every episode brings a new chapter with it.

Haider has pretty much given up on his dream of becoming a politician & because he is feeling burdened by the household expenses, he is forcing himself to do a regular job that will guarantee some fixed income with which he will be able to take care of his family, but little did he know that just when he will stop thinking about everything, Asfand Sultan will appear in his life & ask him to join his party once again. It is amazing how Mishi has not once forced Haider to go out of the way to fend for his responsibilities because she knows that he is trying really hard. If Mishi had wanted, she could’ve easily told Haider to settle for a job but in stead, she chose to tell him to chase his dreams as she knows that politics is something that Haider is most passionate about. I am glad that they introduced this track in Haider’s life once again because things will become even more interesting.

Mishi chose to contact Qadeer because she not only had to talk about Saba but she also wanted to know about his final answer in regards to Humna too. I think it was a wise decision that Mishi made because she know that Saba’s parents would never believe what she will say & Saba will easily persuade them into believing that Mishi was lying, so she knew that if there was one person who’d actually understand the entire situation, it was Qadeer. However, I feel Mishi should have informed Haider about it too, not that it would’ve made much difference because Haider trusts her completely but it wouldn’t have hurt to have Haider’s back in this matter because one way or the other, Haider is linked to this situation because his part of the amount is missing as well.

Haider has made such a good impact on Sara in such a short span of time that even though she still feels uncomfortable at the idea of Mishi living with Haider in his humble abode, she has accepted their relationship. Sara has learned the truth that Haider might not be financially stable, but he knows how to protect Mishi & most importantly, he knows how to make her happy. Sara has seen how determined Haider is & she has also seen how Mishi is at a happy place in this relationship, so she can’t really complain much & that is why she was convinced to go to meet Mishi & Haider’s family with a wedding gift. I am glad that they didn’t cover that scene because they have shown enough of her for us to imagine what she must’ve said & how she must’ve reacted, but it was good to see Sara giving a nod of approval to Mishi & respecting her choices.

I must say, the character that has evolved into a very respectful personality is that of Khadija. It was so nice to see her complimenting Mishi over her smallest of efforts. Also, the way Khadija didn’t pay much heed to what Sara said also goes to show that she isn’t someone who will make a fuss about the facts that she herself is aware of. Khadija isn’t oblivious of the fact that Mishi comes from a very different background, that is why she wasn’t surprised at how Sara reacted & even told Mishi to not worry much about what she must be feeling or thinking. Also, I think it was quite sweet of Khadija when she refused to take the money from Mishi, saying that Haider gave that money to Mishi for her personal use. These are quite a few things that might not matter but actually do stand out in this drama because we rarely get to see such characters, such mothers in law, such husbands, such wives & such daughters in law in our dramas who deal with the situations wisely, who believe in respecting each other, who believe in letting go of the bitter stuff & who are not always on a hunt to makes the matters worse.

I loved loved loved Haider & Mishi’s scenes the most. The way they bicker, the way they taunt each other, the way they compliment each other, it is actually quite refreshing to see a husband & wife behaving like a ‘normal’ couple in the toughest of circumstances, because it shows that the power of love is so strong that they are ready to deal with anything & everything with a smile on their face. Mishi has made her place in Haider’s heart & his home too & Haider has done the same thing because the changes in Sara’s attitude are pretty explanatory. Even though in the initial stages of their marriage, it looked like Haider was quite demanding & believed in having things his way, but as their story progressed, Haider started reciprocating everything that Mishi was doing for him & his family & that is why, he made sure to form cordial terms with Mishi’s mother, as he could see that Sara’s behavior affected Mishi a lot.

So finally, Haider accepted Asfand’s offer because Mishi gave him the validation & push that he needed, but first Haider made sure to let him know that he was pretty much settled with his wife & he won’t be bothered if Asfand will once again have any objections over his marriage. It is good that Asfand doesn’t seem much concerned about Haider’s personal life & only wants his expertise in the field of politics. Mishi finally had a conversation with Qadeer, but she was shocked to know that Qadeer has moved on. I hope now when Humna will get to know this, she will kiss the idea of getting married to him good-bye because she deserves someone better than him for sure. Also, Sikandar got an answer from Wahab that he most certainly wasn’t expecting. I am still not sure if Wahab did this to get back at Haider or he was genuinely interested in Sikandar’s shop, I hope they do uncover the reason behind Wahab’s move as well.

Overall, this episode was amazing & I am so glad we’re getting to see a couple of such individuals who not only believe in supporting each other, but also believe in empowering each other with their validation, with their love & with their trust too. It was for the first time when Mishi also confessed her love for Haider & it was absolutely sweet. All the questions about ‘kangan’ were so filmy & done really well, I can’t thank the writer enough for giving us a couple that behaves normally because this is something that we never get to see in our dramas. The acting of all the actors & the direction of this drama has remained top-notch so far & I am so glad that even at this stage of the drama, the ending of each & every episode leaves us asking for more. Thank you so much team Besharam for giving us an incredibly amazing drama. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Besharam.

Cheers,

Zara Maaf Kar Episode 25 – Puke-worthy Affair of an Ex-Couple!

Ohkay so, when the smoke erupting from the green tea mug seems more interesting, when Shaan’s Korma Masala advertisement seems more enticing, when the placement of keys on your keyboard seems to catch your attention more than what’s on TV & when the past hour turns out to be the longest & most boring hour of your life, then you know for sure that the drama that you’re tuned to has turned into a disaster.

I’ll get straight to the point. I thought this drama was about the story of Uzma, Mahnoor & Haadi’s characters but I am not sure when did the writer of the season 2 of Zara Yaad kar get this idea that people will be happy to see the side characters taking the lead while pushing the main leads in the background? This episode was about Gaiti & Anoushay & what for, I am still confused. Chalo yan to unke characters gripping hote to bhi baat thi, but their characters are sticking out like sore thumb in the drama & the coverage that they are getting is totally unjustified & is only wasting the time of the viewers!!!

I think since Haadi is a brainless bug, I will suggest him to put an ad on OLX.com.pk for a temporary husband that he is in search of for Mahnoor, I am sure the process will be quicker that way, he will find the guy & we will be free from this torture named Zara Yaad Kar.

Oh well, seems like Uzma turned a blind eye from Fahad because she was too comfortable being a doormat to Haadi. Everyone in this drama is a doormat to one another. Haadi is a doormat to Mahnoor, Mahnoor was a doormat to Waqar, Uzma is a doormat to Haadi, Anoushay is a doormat to Waqar & even Gaiti was a doormat to Waqar too. So many doormats gathered at one place, how cool is that? Well, I had a good laugh at the scene where Mahnoor banged a door on Haadi’s face treating him like a doormat & I knew, I just knew it that now he will scurry like a mouse to Uzma’s home & she will not only listen to his gibberish, but will serve him tea & food too & this is exactly what happened which made me laugh out loud!!! Talk about everyone being brainless & spineless bug in this drama!!! Is this why Haadi told Uzma to cancel her wedding? Only to have her around & give him advises whenever he showed up at her doorstep like a sore loser? My blood actually boiled when I saw Haadi having a normal conversation with Mahnoor & smiling at the thought of her, after planting a seed in Uzma’s mind that she was just compromising in the name of marriage so she should rethink her decision. Haadi displayed a lot of ‘wisdom’ in analyzing Uzma’s situation, so when is he going to put his wisdom to good use in the matters concerning his own pathetic life? Also, didn’t Uzma think that she was ready to leave a guy like Fahad for a loser like Haadi, who will vanish from her life once Mahnoor will be done with Halala & get married to him again? Yeah, all this while I thought at least Uzma had some brains, but oh well!

The scene where Anoushay barged into Haadi’s room inquiring about Waqar was ridiculous & insane. Like she couldn’t get a hold of her loser two-timer boyfriend & there she was giving a piece of her mind to Haadi but yes, at least there was one thing that she said that made sense & that was ‘ye philosophy jharna band karo’, phew, at least there’s someone who thinks the same about this entire falsafa that has been happening in this drama. Waqar is another loser on the loose. I am amazed that after becoming a politician, Gaiti had the time to track Waqar down & call him. I am amazed that these episodes are written by the director herself who happens to be a female, because she left no stone unturned in making all the female characters of this drama look like a bunch of desperadoes who only dream of getting married by hook or by crook, without even bothering if the guy they are drooling over is worth it or not!!!

Oh well, the playful & pleasant music in the background of Haadi & Mahnoor’s scenes was cringe-worthy. Like the director here is showing us a love affair of ex-husband & wife & she is showing us their omlette ka nashta made by Mahnoor ke haath & is still expecting us to accept everything wholeheartedly, like seriously. Seems like even Aneesa has become a part of this adventure too, where she is eager to see her daughter commit Halala & then she covers it using her motherly instincts as an excuse, oh PHULEEEEZZZZZZZZ!!! Get over with this crap already as this drama is back to square 1 & we’re stuck in a rut.

Well, I am having anxiety just by thinking that I’ll have to tune to this drama next week that too when the preview didn’t look like that it will be the last episode. Can any angel-like-human tell me when this torture is ending because I am done with this drama & I don’t have any patience left. I must say, that after watching Shanakht, I never had imagined that Amna Nawaz Khan will become one of those drama-makers who ruin the drama for the sake of ratings & I never thought that just like Samira Fazal’s projects, I’ll have to raise my guard in regards to her projects too. I will be screening her dramas from now on because I don’t think they’re worth my time! Anyways, please share your thoughts about this pathetic episode of Zara Yaad Kar!!!

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

Mann Mayal Episode 32 – Change Of Heart(s)

All the flashback scenes in tonight’s episode reminded me of the good old days when I believed that this drama had something grand to offer! It also reminded me of the torture this drama has put all of us through! The only thing I am looking forward to right now is an ending to this torture. Mannu’s family members welcomed her like Columbus and  Ibn-e-Batutta’s families must have welcomed them when they came back from their travels. The viewers were shown the flashback scenes covering Mannu and Salahuddin like we had already forgotten about their love story.

All of Mannu’s troubles came to an end in this episode and Abba took a u-turn! After the surgery he actually had a change of heart. After torturing us for months with her becharapan Mannu is a now a more enlightened individual who knows exactly what she wants from life – yes she had a change of hear too! If the moral of the story was that girls should not see marriage as the ultimate goal than it was definitely not presented in the best way. If it was this easy for Mannu to go back to her parents’ house and live a life she wanted to live then why was Abba’s condition used as an excuse to make Mannu stay in Salahuddin’s house for the longest time? The fact is that this drama would have had a decent ending on this note if Mannu’s mother did not pressurize her to stay in Salahuddin’s house, if Mannu wasn’t turned into the ultimate bechari and if Jeena wasn’t part of this grand plan. That way Mann Mayal could have ended at episode 16.

What exactly was Jeena’s role in this story? Apart from giving Salahuddin zehr and then drinking it herself, she did not add anything to the story. She got plenty of screen time, more than Mannu and Salahuddin’s families combined together and now that she is dead I am wondering why did she get so much attention? Jeena’s character was the most unnecessary character in the show. Unless there are actually viewers out there who felt something for her.

Even in this second last episode things moved forward at a snail’s pace. I don’t want to tune into another show in which Maya Ali sheds a single tear! Maya Ali has cried so much in this drama. It is sad to see someone who is capable of so much more being wasted in a role which has absolutely nothing to offer. Salahuddin kept on asking everyone why Mannu left, what happened to picking up the phone and dialing her number to ask her why she left? Also, Mannu’s call to Salahuddin’s parents and the way he was taken away to the operation theatre was meant to mislead the viewers into thinking that he might have died. Which doctor gives a patient anesthesia before taking him to the operation theatre? That was brand new!

Oh well! The story has still not ended and once Salahuddin is fit to travel he will go to Mannu’s house with a rishta.

How many of you watched this episode and how many of you are going to celebrate when this drama ends?

Udaari Episode 21 – Victim Chooses To Be A Survivor

The drama is back on track with Zebu playing a bigger role in the picture. So far we watched Zebu play a victim and not a survivor but in this episode she chose to do what needed to be done in order to put the person who violated her behind bars. This is the first time that we are watching such a case go to trial in a drama and in the end the rapist will get the punishment he deserves through proper channel. We have seen dramas in which rapists are shot in the end or they lose their senses but we have never seen a rapist go to trial. Although the past few episodes were somewhat disappointing because Zebu’s character had been relegated to the background but they laid the foundation for everything we saw in tonight’s episode. These latest developments will shock Imtiaz because all of this was not part of his grand plan! This episode opened with Arsh distancing himself from Meeran emotionally. He is still as dedicated to this case as he was before but after Meeran’s response to his proposal in the previous episode he is no longer willing to be “just friends” with Meeran either. Arsh’s reaction was realistic but it is still difficult to digest the fact that in all these years both of these individuals have not moved on. Meeran finally tells Arsh the truth and that is when he makes a very important decision – Zebu is the only one who should decide whether she should come out with the truth or not. This was the decision which brought Zebu back in the picture. Zebu is desperate to get her mother out of jail therefore she is willing to take this difficult step. udaari This episode also focused on the prerequisites for taking such a case to the court. These discussions were loud and clear which was a bold yet an important step to raise awareness about the issue. The scenes in the court showed how easy it was for Imtiaz to win this case if Zebu did not decide to share the truth in the court. The viewers however were not shown why Sajida decided to plead not guilty because so far she had been saying that she would confess to the crime. Was it because of Imtiaz’s presence in the court? She did not want to give him the satisfaction of knowing that he had already won the case. All the details of the case are being covered in these last few episodes therefore the pace of the drama has slowed down considerably. This episode was educational and Zebu’s growth from a victim to a survivor was a positive development but it wasn’t very entertaining. The drama sends out a very important message therefore it is there to serve a bigger purpose. Farhan Saeed has proven himself as a versatile actor in this play and Ahsan Khan has won people over with his effortless portrayal of Imtiaz. Farhat Ishtiaq’s take on the story of a rape victim is definitely very different and better from many other dramas which we have seen recently that dealt with the same subject. The story was stretched in the previous few episodes therefore the drama isn’t as entertaining as it was before but no one can deny its educational value. The director Mohammad Ehteshamuddin has extracted the best performances from all the actors involved and this episode was filled with flawless performances mostly because Ins-e-Yazdan did not make an appearance. Hina Altaf’s acting was okay in tonight’s episode, she did whatever was expected from her but she doesn’t add that little something which could have made this role special. udari The preview of the next episode suggested that it is not going to be the final episode and the focus will be entirely on the hearings of Sajida’s case. Zebu’s presence in the court and her side of the story will change everything. Imtiaz will lose the edge he has right now and it is then that the judge who right now seems to be siding with him will change his approach. The real question is whether Sajida’s will change her approach too or not! How many of you watched this latest episode? Do share your thoughts about it.

Recently, Zunaira hosted a question and answer session on her Instagram stories where someone asked her how different is she finding her married life. “It’s been great so far, Alhamdulillah! The only thing I’ve been struggling with is referring to my husband’s house as [my] home,” she said answering the question.

Zunaira Inam Opens Up About Her Life After Marriage

Women in our society are often conditioned to think that once they get married, the home they grew up in is not theirs anymore. They are expected to believe that the only home they have is their husband’s house. Zunaira raised a very important question regarding the matter. “But on a deeper level, why should a woman have to choose? Why can’t both homes just be home? They should be.”

Marrying into someone’s life is a big adjustment and we are glad women are speaking up about the struggles that bother them even when their married life and partner make them happy. Usman and Zunaira had a cute nikkah in Islamabad in March while other wedding festivities took place last month.

Zun Mureed Last Episode Story Review – Meaningful As Usual!

Script and Story Ending

Zun Mureed last episode – Na koi per ki jooti hei aur na koi zun mureed … Loved the beautiful ending of Zun Mureed’s Last Episode. Zun Mureed always had some of the most eloquent dialogues but this episode in particular had the most powerful dialogues and a few surprising conversations. The opening scene of this last episode of Zun Mureed was exceptional and Marium and Abid’s conversation was extremely poignant. Most of the tracks were handled superbly in this last episode and there were no loose ends. The ending was predictable but I honestly wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did. The only reason for this was that the previous few episodes laid the foundations for this ending and all the scenes covering Sajjad and Tabbasum were convincing as well as touching! Yes! It was satisfying to see them back together and happy with each other. Certainly, there are no winners and losers when you think of marriage as teamwork! The only part which did not work for me was the way Tabbasum won Rubina over.

A Different Journey Altogether!

I must say that Zun Mureed was a different journey altogether. This was not the first time that we saw a drama on one of our television channels which dealt with the problems which women face in a male dominated society. This was however the first time that a writer attempted and succeeded in shedding light on the issue that making laws is not enough, ensuring that they get implemented swiftly and most importantly changing the mindset of the people is the biggest challenge. Tabbasum’s journey throughout showed that she had more critics than supporters. On the other hand, there were so many people who endorsed what Sajjad did.

ZM1

Important Message For Men

There was an important message for the men in this drama too and perhaps one which was not that easy to accept which is why this drama was criticized a lot too! One of the most important messages in this drama was that women too should be respected and that women can also get hurt or offended just as easily as men do! Relationships come first and ego comes second, if people start sacrificing their relationships to satisfy their egos than the fate which awaits their children was clearly shown in this drama. For all those receptive viewers out there, this drama had a great deal to offer. This was the kind of drama which raised quite a few important questions but at the same answered some too! I truly appreciate the way it was shown how the children get affected in such a situation. Children need their parents to work together in order to run the house and make them feel secured.

Performances and Characters

Nadia Khan’s weak performance was the biggest flaw in the play but all the other actors played their respective roles superbly. Although, Nadia Khan’s performance left a lot to be desired, Tabbasum’s character was so brilliantly etched-out that I never had trouble connecting to her character. Omair Rana was impressive as Sajjad, his performance was effortless and faultless all through the show. Sajjad’s character was layered therefore brining out his sensitivities, insecurities and underlying issues was an important task which Omair Rana fulfilled wonderfully. Hina Bayat and Khalid Anum were also convincing in their respective roles. Abid’s character too was the highlight of the show. Shamim Hilali did complete justice to her character and managed to convey every emotion brilliantly. The child stars too acted convincingly. Fari’s character was a breath of fresh air and a source of inspiration. The actress playing the role performed well but the caked-up make-up was always distracting. Aisha’s Gul did exactly what was expected from her but her character got more screen time than was necessary. Kashif Mehmood also performed well but I am looking forward to watching him in a more meaty role since he has been playing somewhat similar roles.

ZM

The Verdict!

Zun Mureed was anything but run-of-the-mill, even with its relatively slow pace, Zun Mureed had more to offer than many of the fast-paced shows we have seen lately. It was groundbreaking in its own way and definitely impactful. It was a pleasure watching, reviewing and discussing this show with the readers here as well as the friends and family members in person! I would like to thank team Zun Mureed for giving us a drama which was unique in so many ways.

Thank you for reading the reviews and for your valuable feedback.

Zun Mureed Episodes 16 & 17 Review – Realistic and Convincing

The story is moving forward at a steady pace and the best part of this play so far is that everything about it is realistic hence convincing and easy to connect to. The writer gives the viewers plenty of time to figure things out for themselves before revealing the reasons behind a certain development. So far, the writer has clearly elaborated on the reasons why Sajjad finds it so difficult to admit his mistake and move on. The viewers have also been shown in detail how difficult it is for a woman to take a stand against something which is considered a norm in the society and is widely accepted.

These two episodes covered Tabbasum’s attempts to find a job, her conversation with Sidrah, her bhabhi’s continued interference in her life, Fari sharing things with Tabbasum she had not shared before and most importantly the change in Abid’s attitude. These two episodes also highlighted how the children were suffering because of the on going problems between their parents. This particular aspect of the latest developments caught my attention more than any other since children are always the one who suffer the most in such circumstances. It was really important to show this particular aspect from a realistic viewpoint and the writer did just that! Sajjad’s behavior with his daughter said a great deal about his mindset and the kind of upbringing he would give these children if he was incharge. He continuously told Zoya to do house chores and also expected her to be more flexible and compromising because she was a girl. Suddenly, Zoya is expected to take up chores and act like a sensible adult instead of a child who has been through a great deal lately. All these scenes were simply brilliant since they showed different ways in which the children were being exploited, ignored and mistreated.

On the other hand Fari kept on telling Tabbasum that the best thing to do right now was to ensure that the next generation didn’t grow up with a similar mindset. Fari’s dialogues and her character is turning out to be really insightful. She is practical, sensible and sensitive. She always gives Tabbasum hope and is the only person who is genuinely concerned about her. Tabbasum can only make a difference in her children’s lives if she has access to them. She tried to keep her children with her but her bhabhi made sure they didn’t stay and now she isn’t even in contact with her kids therefore right now there isn’t any way for her to influence her kids. Tabbasum’s entire situation has been shown logically throughout without overdramatizing the different scenarios.

Even after Abid specifically told Mariam not to go to Sajjad’s house to help, she was left with no choice when the maid didn’t turn up and Bobby ended up hurting himself. Abid isn’t going to show the kind of flexibility he was showing before and now after hearing that Sajjad has sent the first notice of divorce, he will try even harder to prove that he does have a say in these matters. The new maid in Sajjad’s house is dreaming to be his Sajjad’s wife someday – another aspect of this entire situation which is quite realistic!

Omair Rana, Hina Bayat, Khalid Anum and Aisha Gul’s performances in particular were faultless as usual. There are times however when some of the actors look too made up. The actress playing Fari’s role in particular wears a lot of make-up and Nadia Khan doesn’t compromise on her looks either no matter what. The script of this drama continues to be the most impressive aspect of this show and never disappoints. It is impossible to predict what turn the story will take next but it does seem like Sajjad might eventually have to show some flexibility.

Zun Mureed Episode 9 Review – A Woman Undeterred

Amna Mufti has handled a sensitive topic with care and utmost clarity. She has also focused on all the aspects relating to the matter. She has also shown how egos ruin relationships and most often people fail to see beyond themselves because they feel they are superior to others. It isn’t just Sajjad who feels this way but even Marium and Bi Jaan constantly feel the need to prove Tabbassum wrong. Even though there are plenty of times when you are left wondering if this script could have been translated on screen even more powerfully had the overall treatment given to the play been slightly better but all the scenarios have been penned down in such a manner that understanding these situations is never a problem.

Tabbasum’s determination is the best part of every episode. Even though she is being pressurized enormously and is constantly told that she is over reacting, she never questions her actions. The fact that she filed this complaint because she genuinely felt scared and not because she wanted to prove a point makes her actions even more valid. Tabbasum’s dialogues have been written in such a manner that through them the writer keeps on reminding the viewers that Tabbasum is not taking a stand because her ego is hurt or that she wants to teach her husband a lesson, highlighting this point was of utmost important and the writer has done just that. It is very common for people to assume that most women who file cases under such laws do so out of vengeance or to prove that they can dominate men. The writer has aptly addressed this misconception and assumption by giving solid reasons. While Tabbasum is genuinely looking out for her own well-being and that of her children, Sajjad’s actions are controlled by his ego. He doesn’t feel guilty because he is continuously trying to justify his actions. His ego continues to stop him from understanding the situation and his family is feeding his ego more which isn’t helping!

Zun Mureed Episode 9 Review - A Woman Undeterred

Although Tabbasum’s bhabhi’s scenes can be repetitive and somewhat clichéd but she realistically represents a large majority of females in our family set-up who are so insecure that they will do whatever it takes to take control of things. The fact is that she is living in a house which is more Tabbasum’s than it is hers. She never thinks about how this entire argument started and Tabbasum’s brother too cannot see what she has done. She was the one who started the whole argument about the deg and later on she called Tabbasum and told her what her husband had said. She also made a big deal out of what Tabbasum said and now too she continuously keeps on doing whatever she can to make the situation worse for her sister-in-law. She is one of those many people who don’t think about the consequences of their actions.

It was good to see Sajjad being judged for his actions for a change too! So far Tabbasum has been blamed by everyone and no one has questioned everything Sajjad did. Sajjad’s boss gave him a much-needed reality check but Sajjad’s conversation with his friend showed that he didn’t learn anything from this entire experience. The preview of the next episode also suggested that Sajjad might be willing to be a little flexible because that is what suits him and not because he feels guilty in any way!

Tabbasum’s dialogues tonight were right on point. Even though Nadia Khan’s performance is strictly okay but the character continues to impress. Amna Mufti’s script is well-thought-out and meaningful and the sole reason why I tune into this drama every week.

How many of you watched tonight’s episode? Don’t forget to share your thoughts about it.

Zun Mureed Episode 8 Review – Victim Blaming!

This latest episode of Zun Mureed once again showed the difficulties Tabbasum had to face only because she refused to be beaten up and asked for some respect in return for everything she had done for her husband and his family. Tabbasum isn’t asking for much but Sajjad’s ego won’t allow him to admit that he was wrong and Tabbasum had no choice but to seek protection from the authorities. Sajjad’s ego stands in the way of a reconciliation and Mariam continues to do whatever she can in order to make sure that Tabbasum doesn’t come back to this house. Sajjad’s mother already wants that he should divorce Tabbbasum. It is truly upsetting to see these seemingly educated woman deriving pleasure out of someone’s suffering and this someone is not only their immediate family member but is also the person who looked after the house and at least one of these women for many years! Mariam and Bi Jaan have nothing to gain from making this situation even worse except control (of course!!). This entire situation has been shown realistically because unfortunately in a joint set up there are plenty of women like Bi Jaan who do not let their degrees stand in the way of their ignorance! They only want Tabbasum out of Sajjad’s life because they can’t see him giving his attention to her!

This drama aptly shows the problems a woman is most likely to face if she sends her husband to jail for beating her up. No one cares what Sajjad did, everyone is focusing on the fact that Tabbasum punished him for what he did to her. It is a common practice not just in our society but in many countries to blame the victim instead of the perpetrator and this practice is even more common when the victim is either a woman or someone from a minority group. If a woman musters up the courage to take a stand for herself, she will constantly be judged for doing so by majority of people including her own family members. Now with the freedom of media and the popularity of social media, the battle becomes even harder. It is good to see that the writer has shown that there are also people who applaud such women and acknowledge the fact that it is important for a woman to do whatever it takes to protect herself. Many of the scenes tonight showed how everyone was continuously judging Tabbasum and feeling for Sajjad. Tabbasum’s bhabhi’s remarks about the school principal who invited Tabbasum to come talk to her students showed that no matter what a woman achieves, some people will judge her based on her ‘marital status’! There are very few people who understand what Tabbasum is going through and even fewer who genuinely want to help.

Tabbasum was finally reunited with her children after Mariam figured out that Sajjad might give in to the pressure if the kids gave him too much trouble. Mariam’s husband is the only one who understands the situation but no one wants to listen to him! Fari and her class fellow’s conversation highlighted some important aspects of domestic abuse but these two actors are definitely not well-suited for the roles they are playing.

Zun Mureed’s script is faultless and some of the performances are right on point too but Nadia Khan continues to be the weakest link! I don’t understand why she chose to play such a role when she cannot compromise on her make-up and styling and I am also wondering why the producers thought that someone like her who still has a long way to go could have done justice to such a powerful character! Our drama industry is filled with talented actresses who could have done complete justice to this role. Amna Mufti’s script is intelligently written which is the only reason why it gives you a great deal to talk about and something to look forward to every week.

I am waiting to see if Tabbasum will eventually go back to Sajjad’s house. Right now it seems highly unlikely! How many of you watched tonight’s episode? Do share your thoughts about it.

Zun Mureed Episode 7 Review – Bitter Realities

Tonight’s episode just like the previous one had many important developments to its credit. The writer showed the consequences of the step Tabbasum had taken from different angles and everything was shown realistically with the exception of the fact that Tabbasum didn’t mention her children even once. The most pleasant aspect of this drama is that even with all the opposition which Tabbasum is facing, she never questions what she has done. She is still very sure that she did nothing wrong and is not shown regretting her actions. Nadia Khan’s acting tonight was relatively better but her styling and make-up once again looked completely out of place. This drama has raised some important points and it has done so impressively. This episode opened with Sajjad struggling with only half of what Tabbasum was doing on regular basis. Bi Jaan continued to give everyone a tough time because she is convinced that it is her god-given right to dictate to everyone! Even though she can see that Sajjad cannot cope but she is still pressurizing him to divorce Tabbasum. Her expressions in the last scene however suggested that she had come up with a different plan!

Many of the scenes in this episode showed how “common” it was for men to hit their wives and how most people still failed to comprehend why was the state involved in this matter. Since this drama was written a few years back therefore it shows how difficult the execution of this law was in the early years of its implementation. The scene at the police station showed confusion and even though the officer incharge wanted to make a good example of this case but he wasn’t getting the support he needed and the law itself was not clear. This goes to show that the state has a huge responsibility when they make such laws public. Sajjad’s meeting with his lawyer was also important because he suggested that Sajjad should apologize since there was no other way out. Basically, both these scenes suggested that the only way out for Sajjad was to apologize and bring Tabbasum back home therefore even with the lack of clarity the FIR guaranteed that Tabbasum had some degree of protection. Omair Rana has translated different shades of Sajjad’s personality superbly on screen. So far Sajjad also doesn’t feel any regret, his ego won’t allow him to reflect upon his actions and he is also surrounded by people who give him wrong advice.

Zun Mureed Episode 7 Review - Bitter Realities

The scene in which Marium was wondering what happened to her brother’s perfect life was one of my favorite scenes from this episode! It was ironic how she contributed so much to this tragedy yet she blamed it all on someone’s buri nazar! Khalid Anum and Hina Bayat both are absolutely phenomenal in their respective roles. Their realistic and convincing performances makes it easier to understand their characters. The actress playing Fari’s role and the actor who is playing her class fellow’s role are standing out like a sore thumb. Their performances and their overall look is distracting to say the least! Tabbasum and Fari’s relationship however is heart-warming. The child stars have also done complete justice to their characters. You feel for the kids more than anyone else since they are the ones suffering the most. Shamim Hilali has played her role superbly too.

This episode brilliantly covered the role of the media during such personal upheavals. We see our channels making the most of tragedies worse than this one only to get viewership. This negative aspect of freedom of speech and independence of media needs to be highlighted and tonight all the scenes covering the role of media did so impressively. Even though these media personnel tell the public that they are helping the victim but that is not the case. It is all about ratings and personal gains.

Zun Mureed is turning out to be a game changer in many ways. This drama deals with domestic abuse in a brand new way. It sends out a clear message which is easy to understand – it is not okay for men to hit their wives, there is nothing ‘normal’ about it and a wife has the right to protect herself without being accused of being disloyal if something like this happens! Kankar was the only other drama which highlighted this issue in a similar manner but Amna Mufti’s take on the issue is different because it also involves the state and legislation apart from many other things. The miscasting has definitely affected the overall impact of different situations. The drama overall would have been perfect if some of the cast members gave a more solid performance.

Zun Mureed Episode 6 Review – Important Developments

Tonight’s episode of Zun Mureed covered a great deal from Sajad’s growing frustration to the issues Tabbasum was facing in her brother’s house. This episode also focused on showing the negative effects this entire development had on the children who were always loved and were well taken care of by their parents. All of a sudden they lost their mother and Sajad who was already not used to looking after them, found it really difficult to handle them. Marium’s husband is gradually running out of patience and she too is finding it hard to cope with the situation. Despite of the difficulties Sajad’s family is facing because they cannot handle the kids or the house, they continue to blame Tabbasum for everything. When the children do not listen to them, it is Tabbasum’s fault because she spoiled them! When the maid gives them a tough time, that is also Tabbasum’s doing. The general trend in this house is that no one takes responsibility for anything, everyone uses Tabbasum like a punching bag. Even Bi Jaan who cannot even feed herself likes to feel in control by treating Tabbasum and even her children as outsiders. Bi Jaan’s expressions when Marium’s husband told her to go home also showed how controlling she was even in this situation.

The flashback scenes tonight and Tabbasum’s conversation with her sister showed the only reason why she managed to juggle so much in all these years was because her husband acknowledged and appreciated everything she did. Tabbassum’s dialogues were written brilliantly and they conveyed everything she was going through faultlessly. Nadia Khan’s performance however left a lot to be desired. I fail to understand why, she does not tie her hair. Those perfectly combed and straightened loose hair do not go well with her situation at all. Apart from her dialogue delivery, Nadia Khan needs to focus on her outlook as well especially if she is going to play such roles in the future too. Thankfully Tabbasum’s character has been etched-out so well that even with her average performance it isn’t difficult to understand what Tabbasum is going through. The overall impact of everything she is going through definitely lessens but the character is still easy to connect to. Tabbasum explained why she didn’t think she deserved to be kicked out of her own house, her dialogues clearly show that she is a strong woman who knows the difference between right and wrong which is the best part of her personality.

Zun Mureed Episode 6 Review - Important Developments

Sajad’s growing frustration, anger and his daily struggles were also shown convincingly on screen. Omair Rana has once again nailed a character which is different from many others he has played so far. Sajad is angry and right now he does not regret anything. The children are lonely as well as scared and very soon it seems like Sajad might have to either leave the kids with Tabbasum or bring her back. Bi jaan wants Marium all to herself and I am waiting to find out for how long Marium will be able to fulfill these responsibilities. Tabbasum’s bhabhi’s scenes could easily have been chopped down. Aisha Gul is a phenomenal actress but I feel she is being typecast lately.

The preview of the next episode showed that the media isn’t going to let Tabbasum settle down or make a decision in peace. Bi Jaan once again will instigate her son to leave Tabbasum for good. Overall, this episode was well written and for the most part well executed. This drama has started an interesting debate and it draws the line where it should be drawn! It has my complete attention and I can’t wait to find out what the upcoming episodes have in store for us.

Zun Mureed Episode 5 Review – Bearing The Brunt!

This latest episode showed the aftermath of Tabbasum’s decision to use the bill which was meant to protect women like her to shelter herself from a husband who she thought might kill her. Tabbasum’s interpretation of this entire situation made perfect sense since the circumstances were such that she had reason to believe that Sajjad might harm her even more than he already had. Her body language also suggested that the injury she got as a result of their fight was quite serious although it wasn’t taken seriously at all by anyone. The way Tabbasum’s character has been written suggests that she is a strong woman who would do whatever it takes to contribute to her marriage and in return all she wants is respect from her husband but Nadia Khan’s performance keeps you wondering! Somehow, she makes Tabbasum look like a bechari even in situations where she takes some really bold decisions. Nadia Khan is a complete misfit in this role since she hasn’t been able to bring out the best in her character.

Tonight, while everyone else was either busy worrying about Sajjad or family’s honour, Tabbasum’s sister was the only one who was worried about her.The entire scenario was covered realistically with the exception of the fact that Tabbasum thought that her husband would let her stay in the house even after everything that happened. Although Sajjad was the one at fault and Tabbasum wasn’t going to let anyone convince her otherwise but especially because of the way this news was covered by the media she shouldn’t have expected everyone to support her. This episode however flawlessly depicted that it wasn’t practical for a woman to seek protection under the law in a society where it is alright for a man to hit a woman but it isn’t okay when a woman protests as a result. There were some developments which didn’t quite work for me but the reactions from the family members were covered really well.

Zun Mureed Episode 5 Review - Bearing The Brunt!

It was amusing watching Maryam tell Tabbasum that she would have supported her, had Tabbasum reached out for her instead of complaining to the police. This was a blatant lie which was meant to make Tabbasum feel bad about what she had done. Tabbasum knew she couldn’t reach out to anyone which is why she ended up taking this step. This entire scenario also shows how people like Maryam and Tabbasum’s bhabhi cannot handle the fact that two people are happily married but will be the first ones to judge if something goes wrong! Both these women contributed to the problems between Sajjad and Tabbasum which escalated into something far bigger than they had expected it to. I am very sure Maryam won’t be able to handle her mother or run that house on her own for too long. Maryam’s husband was the only person who tried to handle the situation but even he indirectly blamed Tabbasum when he said that working women are strong headed. The way he read what Bi Jaan wrote showed that he was shocked at the role she was playing in this entire situation but at the same time, he did whatever he could to add fuel to the fire.

Bi Jaan’s character isn’t even remotely likeable but it is really interesting because her reactions to different situations right from the first episode show the mentality of all those people who get pleasure out of watching other people suffer. This episode also showed the irresponsibility with which media covers such issues. The news channels are so desperate to cover any news which gets attention that they don’t think twice before invading other people’s privacy and they completely forget what repercussions their actions could have.

While all the other actors were absolutely brilliant in this episode, Nadia Khan’s performance continues to be the weakest link in this play. There are plenty of actresses in our industry who could have nailed this role and made it easier for the viewers to understand the character.

Zun Mureed Episode 4 Review – Highlighting Double Standards

This episode highlighted the double standards which are so rampant in our society that most often even women accept them as a norm and women are considered rebellious if they question them. This drama has a solid script, the writer made sure that the viewers were well acquainted with the characters and their circumstances before introducing the most important development in the story.

Tabbasum’s character has been etched-out brilliantly and the situations which led to the phone call to the police were covered convincingly. Tabbasum was already shown struggling with daily routine because she was expected to carry more burden than she could handle therefore when she heard Sajjad crack a joke about wanting another wife like her, she wasn’t very “understanding” or amused!! It is common for men to joke this way, so common that many of the jokes about married life usually revolve around second marriages and girlfriends but the fact is that a woman gets just as offended by such jokes as a man would! The writer put forward this important message aptly.

When Tabbasum said exactly what her husband did, all of a sudden his “ghairat” was at stake and he felt that he needed to do something to feel like he had an upper hand in this relationship and ended up doing something which he never even imagined he would do. He also didn’t expect that Tabbasum will do something so extreme to punish him. Tabbasum’s bhabhi’s role in this entire situation and the reactions of the people witnessing everything played a major role in making things worse. Sajjad has been constantly pressurized in the past 3 episodes as well to do something extreme to set his wife straight and this time around because his ego was hurt he succumbed to the pressure. One thing which doesn’t make a lot of sense is that if Bi Jaan can write accurately with a pen then why can’t she dial a number on the telephone or type a message? It is ironic how Bi Jaan is using the marker and board brought by her bahu to harm her in whichever way she can. Tabbasum gave her this board so that she won’t feel so frustrated and would have a way to vent out but this new mode of communication has been constantly used by Bi Jaan to show hatred for her bahu who does whatever she can to take care of her. On the other hand, she feels unconditional love for her son who won’t even leave a game of cricket match or lose his sleep to attend to his mother. Tabbasum’s reaction made perfect sense, her dialogues about why she felt she needed protection from her own husband were also spot on but Nadia Khan’s performance wasn’t as powerful as it should have been. Had she given a more powerful performance, these scenes could have been even more impactful.

Zun Mureed Episode 4 Review - Highlighting Double Standards

The reaction of the policeman who was incharge and the repercussions of this phone call were covered faultlessly. Since, this law is still new therefore every case is getting media attention, Tabbasum obviously didn’t see this coming, it remains to be seen what her course of action will be in the future. I think in the upcoming weeks we will see that passing a law in the parliament and making it work practically are two different things. Also, laws cannot change the way people think and at the end of the day any woman who goes to the police will eventually have to face a backlash from her family and the society. Omair Rana’s performance has been impressive throughout. Hina Bayat, Shamim Hilali, Aisha Gul and Khalid Anum’s realistic performances are the highlight of every episode. Nadia Khan however has failed to breathe life into her character. The only reason why Tabbasum’s character is easy to relate to is that it has been etched-out superbly and the director hasn’t over dramatized the important events.

Zun Mureed Episode 3 Review – Highs and Lows!

Tonight’s episode of Zun Mureed focused a great deal on the issue of domestic violence from different perspectives; the role the society plays, the reason why men think they are entitled to do so and how such men react when they feel that the state’s intervention might stand in their way. This episode also gave further insight into all the main characters. Sajjad’s expectations from his wife and most importantly his failure to understand that none of this was Tabbsum’s responsibility yet she was bearing the burden because she wanted to help him in whatever way she could continues to be the main reason why Tabbasum is already being abused in a certain way. In the opening scene of tonight’s episode, Sajjad threatened to hit Tabbasum only because his sleep was disrupted. So far, he has been shown as someone who puts himself before everything else and although he claims that he doesn’t care what anyone says but he gets brainwashed too easily. Instead of understanding Tabbasum’s situation and helping her out, Sajjad blames her for everything that goes wrong. Omair Rana has been performing brilliantly, his acting is always effortless and right on point.

Tabbasum’s conversations tonight revolved around domestic violence in some way or the other. While she got really upset when a man at the butcher’s shop ignored the fact that she was first in line and the butcher too attended to him first, she fails to question how her own husband manipulates her on daily basis. Her conversations also showed once again just how sure she was that Sajjad would never hit her even after what he did primarily because he apologized. I liked the way the writer explained what kind of men hit women and termed them as individuals who were mentally sick. This was especially important because most often when a woman is domestically abused she is judged more than the person who her husband. Also, very often women stay silent because of this reason. This thinking is so rampant that there are also women who might feel that their husbands have the right to hit them because they provide for them and are superior to them.

Zun Mureed Episode 3 Review - Highs and Lows!

This drama shows how a man who values his wife is called a zun mureed and one who dominates her is a real man! Tabbasum’s mother in law never had a happy marriage therefore she doesn’t want to see her daughter in law enjoying the comforts of a healthy relationship hence she takes pleasure in her pain. While no one in the family can see what problems this woman faces on daily basis, they are not happy with the fact that her husband bought a car for her. Ironically Tabbasum might end up paying for this car herself too. Nadia Khan’s performance tonight was strictly okay, there were times when her expressions were over the top but overall so far her performance is far more realistic that it is in Aisi Hei Tanhai. The character has been etched-out really well and I hope that Nadia Khan will be able to do justice to it in the upcoming episodes as well.

Overall, this episode raised some important points but there were some scenes which could have been even more impactful if they were translated on screen more convincingly. The preview of the next episode definitely gave me a reason to tune into this drama next week too since I am waiting to find out what turn the story takes once Sajjad hits Tabbasum and she decides to go to the police.

Zun Mureed Episode 26 Review Story – Major Character Development

Tonight’s episode of Zun Mureed laid the foundations for an ending which seemed highly unlikely few weeks back. For the past two weeks, there was a major but gradual shift in the story and tonight while Sajjad’s guilt was extremely convincing, highlighting Tabbasum’s bechargi and limitations was not needed. Everything else in this episode was picture perfect but Sidra’s dialogues were not in line with the basic concept of this drama. Yes, this was the first time that Sajjad hit Tabbasum and I was all for Tabbasum giving him another chance if he realized his mistake and took responsibility for his action but Sidra’s dialogues about a man’s ego and how it could get hurt did not work for me at all. Also, it would have been sufficient if Tabbasum ultimately went back home when Bobby told her what was going on instead of reinforcing the belief that even a woman like Tabbasum could not do much for herself or her children. This is definitely true and close to reality but I feel that in this particular case it was unnecessary. We watch plenty of dramas on daily basis which give women this lesson and one thing I have always loved about Zun Mureed was that it was never one of those dramas. Apart from this one scene everything else was refreshing as usual and this episode overall gave all the right messages.

Zun Mureed Episode 26 Review Story - Major Character Development

Tonight’s episode opened with Razia turning up at Tabbasum’s brother’s house to tell everyone what was going on. Tabbasum was not home therefore it was up to Fari to decide whether she should convince her sister to go back or not. Everyone seems to have forgotten that Tabbasum did try to go back but she was turned back in the worst way possible. Fari is the only one who mentioned that. So far, Tabbasum has been shown as a sensible and sensitive woman who never let her ego dictate to her therefore asking her to not let her ego stand in her way repeatedly was somewhat unfair and it gave the wrong impression. The focus later on was on Sajjad more than Tabbasum because he was the one who still needed a great deal of convincing. Watching Sajjad finally realize his mistakes and especially his reply to Marium in the end was truly gratifying. Sajjad’s character development has changed the dynamics of the story altogether. The fact that Tabbasum heard Sajjad’s confession herself also is a major reason why she can now go back to him with complete confidence.

Zun Mureed Episode 26 Review Story - Major Character Development

Bi Jaan’s apology and her state of mind was also a really important development tonight. She has surely learned her lesson and knows now just how wrong she was. She has also realized that she needs Tabbasum more than Tabbasum ever needed her. Her decision to send Bobby alone was careless and desperate at the same time. Marium was the only one tonight who still wanted Sajjad to stay firm and not give in. Sajjad’s reply to her was on point. This was the perfect ending to this episode and the preview of the next episode was promising. I am looking forward to an ending in which Tabbasum will be valued and Sajjad will turn over a new leaf. Waiting to see a change in Marium’s character as well. Omair Rana and Shamim Hilali acted exceptionally well today and this episode was directed brilliantly too.

Zun Mureed Episode 25 Review – Few Unexpected Developments!

Tonight’s episode opened with the children and Bi Jaan telling Marium and Abid about Rubina’s phone call to a man named Gaami. While Marium refused to listen to them, Abid decided to confront Rubina. When Rubina heard Gaami’s name, she knew she could get in to trouble therefore she decided to go with plan B! Her execution of the plan couldn’t have been more convincing. Once again Sajjad ended up in jail, this time with Abid. The police had also been there earlier when everyone had been drugged therefore it would have been better if these developments were also discussed while Sajjad and Abid were at the police station. However, it seemed like the fact that Sajjad had beaten his wife and his boss also said in an interview that he had anger management issues were the main reasons why Abid couldn’t really plead his case.

Zun Mureed Episode 25 Review - Few Unexpected Developments!

Just like always Sajjad thought that arguing with the policemen and other people was the best solution since he was right! Abid handled the situation wisely and he rightly pointed out that while the Women Protection Bill was meant to protect women who really were victims, there were plenty of women like Rubina out there who used this bill for their own vested interests. I truly appreciate the fact that the writer has been neutral and logical instead of siding with the women in general. She has shown different types of women instead of showing that women are always the victim or that men are the ones who are always wrong. She has also shown a man like Abid who is sensible and can tell right from wrong. The writer’s open-minded and coherent approach makes this script work for me. We have seen many dramas which dealt with domestic abuse in the past too but most often the writers are either bent on making the women victims or fail to do justice to the basic issue.

Zun Mureed Episode 25 Review - Few Unexpected Developments!

Fari finally told Tabbasum about what was going on in Sajjad’s life and that the children were no longer going to school. The flashback scene suggested that Tabbasum was thinking about the problems she will face when she tries to keep her kids with her. I was expecting Tabbasum to reach out to her kids immediately but she took a more practical step and talked to Sidra about moving in with her. Tabbasum knows that she cannot keep her kids with her while she is living with her brother therefore having an independent set up seemed like a step towards the right direction. Sidra’s track took an unexpected turn and I am definitely waiting to see where this track is headed. Nadia Khan’s acting in this scene left a lot to be desired, she needs to tone down the expressions and focus more on her body language as well.

Abid once again explained to Sajjad that he needed Tabbasum’s support now more than ever but it seems like even now Sajjad finds it difficult to “forgive” Tabbasum for arguing with him and for threatening him. I loved Abid’s dialogues tonight because they clearly stated that a man has no right to hit a woman just because she argues with him! I hope that this conversation helped those people who thought that Tabbasum “overreacted” understand the situation! Will Sajjad finally admit that he was wrong? I am waiting to find out!

Zun Mureed Episode 24 Review – Meaningful & On Point

This was another meaningful and relevant episode of Zun Mureed which showed how some of the characters had undergone a slight change while others were bent on believing their version of the truth. Tonight’s episode opened with Anila talking to Rauf about everything she talked to Tabbasum about and this conversation clearly showed that she did not see Tabbasum as a “threat” now! This recent shift in Anila’s character is convincing and extremely likeable. Sajjad on the other hand continued to blame Tabbasum for everything that is going wrong with his life even now. Right from the get-go Sajjad had been shown as someone who did the bare minimum for his family yet he always felt like he had the right to assert himself like he was the boss and had everything in control. Tabbasum was the one who was putting in her maximum effort to run the house smoothly but the second there was a conflict between her and Sajjad, everyone was convinced that Tabbasum was not indispensible. The recent developments have been shown convincingly and I truly appreciate the fact that the writer has covered every little detail.

Zun Mureed Episode 24 Review - Meaningful & On Point

There are so many people out there who think that a maid runs the house especially when the women are mostly supervising and not actually doing the housework. I am glad the writer showed that keeping a check on these workers and ensuring the safety of family members is also an important job which women perform yet very often they do not get enough credit for it. Sajjad’s lack of understanding in this matter is relatable since most men will be easily exploited in such a situation especially when they are out to prove a point. Sidra’s scene was also really well written and executed. For the first time she questioned Tabbasum’s action but it was somewhat confusing as to why she did that. Was it because she was thinking that perhaps Sajjad was not someone who would hit his wife over and over again like Jamil? It would have been so much better if this conversation was more detailed.

Zun Mureed Episode 24 Review - Meaningful & On Point

For the first time, it seemed like Anila was actually concerned for Tabbasum’s children and she did not have an “agenda”! It is so true that children suffer the most in such situations and the writer has always focused on this aspect which is why I have always felt for the children more than anyone else. Although, Anila was wrong that Tabbasum was doing all this because of a bruised ego but Tabbasum has definitely not been able to do much for her kids and has even convinced herself that her children do not need her anymore. Tabbasum has been so caught up in her problems that she has not been able to protect her children, the way they should have been protecting them. This part is also close to reality since only a super human would be able to do complete justice to everything in such a situation. Even though Nadia Khan’s acting leaves a lot to be desired but even then it isn’t difficult appreciating just how beautifully this character has been etched-out. Tabbasum’s character has certain flaws but also has some definite strengths which makes it more human as well as inspiring. Omair Rana on the other hand has performed brilliantly throughout. He is extremely convincing in this role and translates different shades of Sajjad’s personality flawlessly on screen. Khalid Anum’s character and his performance too has been superb throughout. Hina Bayat always gives every character she is assigned her best. The only unconvincing aspect of this drama is Bi Jaan’s limitations in terms of communicating with others – why doesn’t she have a phone? This question pops up in my mind so many times while watching this play! Aisha Gul’s acting has been spot on too right from the beginning and the change in her character was the best thing about this episode.

I simply love this drama because it is always on point and keeps on giving me so much to look forward to. I can’t wait to tune into it next week. Will Sajjad finally see things for what they are? Waiting to see a change in his character in the upcoming episodes and hopefully an ending which will be best for everyone involved!

Zun Mureed Episode 23 Review – Loved It!

This was another phenomenal and one of my most favorite episodes of Zun Mureed. This drama deserves tons of appreciation and never disappoints. Every single scene in this episode had a powerful and positive message. I especially loved the part about wife jokes since these jokes are usually taken lightly but can be quite offensive. Some of the most popular sitcoms on our television channels thrive on such jokes and hardly anyone objects on the kind of humor they are promoting. Tabbasum’s conversation with Anila was the highlight of this episode. Tabbasum’s character has been beautifully etched-out. Tabbasum’s vulnerabilities, her strengths and her positivity make her one of the most nuanced female characters of her kind. She is a strong woman who knows her weaknesses but always manages to overcome them with the help of Fari and now Sidra. Fari’s character is also extremely likeable. Tonight, for the first time it seemed like Anila actually understood what Tabbasum had gone through and perhaps she no longer saw her as the “enemy”! Anila once again tried to emotionally blackmail Tabbasum because she was afraid that Tabbasum will ask for her share next but the reply she got left her flabbergasted. Her husband’s comment about the kind of affect Tabbasum’s “lecture” had on her was amusing!!

Everything Tabbasum said about the house and the role Anila had played in making that house a home was on point too. It was something which was completely in line with her character. I am glad that before she said all this, the writer made it very clear that Tabbasum had the right to ask for her share but she chose not to. She did so not because she was under pressure or scared that her brother might get upset but she did it because she did not want to repeat what had happened to her. Although I really hope that now that Anila’s character goes through a much-needed change but the preview of the next episode did not suggest that.

Zun Mureed Episode 23 Review - Loved It!

Even after everything that happened in Sajjad’s house he continued to be stubborn. He still isn’t convinced that he “needs” Tabbasum in his life because accepting that would mean that Tabbasum is irreplaceable and his inflated male ego wouldn’t allow him to recognize that fact. Abid revealed a part of his past to him which was not know till now but it did not change the way Sajjad thinks. As the story progresses, it seems like he might eventually realize that he cannot deal with everything on his own. But will Tabbasum be willing to take him back? So far the writer has made this thing really clear that Tabbasum isn’t taking a stand because she has a bruised ego but she is doing so because she feels that is the right thing to do therefore if Sajjad truly is sorry then it would not be wrong if Tabbasum is willing to be flexible.

This episode was picture perfect, the performances were on point and there wasn’t a single scene which was out of place or context. Even after all these weeks Zun Mureed continues to hold my interest and keeps on giving me pleasant surprises. Looking forward to what the next episode has in store.

Zun Mureed Episode 22 Review – A Way Out!

With this episode Tabbasum finally managed to make up her mind about what she needs to do next. Tabbasum’s brother talked to Fari hoping that she would help him convince Tabbasum to go back to Sajjad but his plan totally backfired. Fari’s character continues to be a breath of fresh air. Although the actress playing Fari’s role always wears more make-up than is necessary just like Rubina but the character itself is so positive and likeable that you can’t help but appreciate it. Fari suggested to Tabbasum that they should rent a place where they can keep the children with them too. This was a brilliant idea and with the help of Sidra, the execution was easier than Tabbasum ever thought it would be. While there are women like Mariam, Tabbasum’s bhabhi and mother in law who cannot see Tabbasum happy or growing, there are also women like Sidra and Fari in this play who are wise, sensitive and practical and very willing to help. Tabbasum’s character itself has a great deal going for it. I don’t remember watching another play in which the viewers got to see a woman’s journey like this. Everything is being covered in detail and logically. We have watched many dramas covering domestic abuse but most often the women are shown as victims and there is very little that they do to make the most of their situation. The focus is usually on the protagonist’s majburis and sufferings as opposed to showing how a woman can cope with such a situation with perseverance. Also, most often even if a woman manages to stand on her own it is usually in the last episode and sudden! I am also glad that there isn’t another man in Tabbasum’s life who could possibly be the “saviour”, she is fighting this war all on her own with the support of her sister and now Sidra. It is always good to see a female protagonist who is her own hero!

Zun Mureed Episode 22 Review - A Way Out!

Abid still wants Tabbasum to come back but he isn’t as rigid as he was before. Everything he did tonight was completely in line with his character. After listening to all the problems which Sajjad and the children have been going through, he did not only allow Mariam to visit and help but also went himself to convince Sajjad to bring Tabbasum back. Bi Jaan finally tried to tell Sajjad and Mariam the truth about Rubina but Sajjad did not even bother reading what she had written and Mariam did not believe. This part was really convincing as well. I was waiting for Bi Jaan to tell someone since she has seen what Rubina is capable of doing.

Once again the scenes covering what the children were going through were right on point. Sajjad is too busy trying to prove to himself that he can manage on his own and does not take anything the children say seriously. Children need more than just food and a place to live. More than anything else, they need someone who will be there for them all the time. Sajjad is definitely not the kind of parent who can do that! Tabbasum was the one who was looking after the kids before and now too she is the only one who can give her children the kind of love and attention they need.

This episode laid the foundations for what is coming ahead. In the next episode Rubina will execute her plan and the preview of the next episode also suggested that she might have given Bi Jaan more sedatives than she could tolerate. I am looking forward to what the next episode will have in store. Will Sajjad eventually realize his mistake or will Sajjad and Tabbasum go their separate ways for good? Waiting to find out!

Zun Mureed Episode 21 Review – Meaningful and Relevant!

Every episode of Zun Mureed covers one day in the lives of its characters therefore while every minute point is covered in detail, the story doesn’t move forward quickly. What I love about this play is that it never loses focus, it can get repetitive but it is never pointless which is why Zun Mureed continues to be one of my favorite plays. Tonight, for the first time it seemed like Sajjad was missing Tabbasum and for once thinking about her didn’t make him as mad as it did before. In the previous few episodes, whenever Sajjad thought about Tabbasum, the phone call to the police and everything he had to go through as a result of that phone call outweighed all those years Tabbasum had dedicated to him and his house. This time around however, he could look at things more “objectively”. The reasons for this were many but the most important reason was that he was tired!! Tabbasum always supported Sajjad in every way therefore now that he was going through the most difficult period of his life not only was she not there by his side but their marriage was about to come to an end too. I truly appreciate the way these scenes were covered, the viewers were kept guessing what Sajjad’s next move was going to be and whatever he did showed how he felt. The director and Omair Rana both did a really good job translating Sajjad’s feelings on screen without any dialogues.

Sajjad wasn’t angry enough to break the photo frame with his and Tabbasum’s wedding photograph but he was also not ready to give Tabbasum a phone call and tell her that he was wrong! Tabbasum’s bhabhi and Sajjad’s mother played a major role in pushing him to the point where he thought he needed to do whatever it took to show Tabbasum that he was the boss! These flashback scenes were used effectively to show how their relationship went downhill. All these scenes showed that Tabbasum was always supportive and calm.

Zun Mureed Episode 21 Review - Meaningful and Relevant!

Rubina’s track finally moved forward too. Once again the viewers were shown how Rubina was teaching the children things which were getting them into trouble. Her boyfriend also figured out where she lived and decided to pay her a visit. The actress playing Rubina’s role is also performing superbly. Many of us can relate to everything she does and the ways in which a maid can impact the children negatively. The message which the writer is sending out is clear and I truly appreciate it – a maid cannot replace a mother!

Bi Jaan was more agitated than before in this episode and Abid seemed calmer. If Bi Jaan realizes how wrong she was everything will automatically fall into place. If Sajjad accepts his mistake and decides to mend his ways, Tabbasum will be more than happy to come back since she doesn’t have an inflated ego but her problem is that she cannot compromise on certain things and right now Sajjad is not willing to accept that. Tabbasum’s bhabhi decided to give the school principal a call when her daughters came home and yet again told her what Miss Tabbasum had taught them. It is quite obvious why lessons like these will get such a reaction from someone who is continuously trying to control other people’s lives. Once again, I felt for the children more than anyone else in this episode. They have no one to turn to because now they cannot even call their mother. Tabbasum thinks that her children don’t need her any more but that didn’t sound good enough. I hope she tries to reach out to her children once again.

The preview of the next episode showed Rubina stealing from Sajjad’s drawer. I am waiting for the time when Sajjad will finally get a wake up call! I truly appreciate everything this drama has to offer and look forward to it every week.

Zun Mureed Episode 20 Review – Strong Messages

Tonight’s episode of Zun Mureed yet again showed the impact Tabbbasum’s teachings on her students and how this was affecting her relationship with her brother. Tabbasum found relief in teaching the younger generation to not make the mistakes she did even when she was going through the lowest period of her life. Every episode has a new lesson and message for all the young girls out there and also those women who are suffering in silence. This drama continues to be realistic because the writer has been really honest when it comes to showing how difficult it is for a woman to stand against all odds. This episode put forward the message that women should help each other take a stand for what is right and raise their voice against injustice. I truly appreciate the way the writer has conveyed all these beautiful and apt messages and I still feel that even with its slow pace and repetition Zun Mureed continues to be a much better play than all those done-to-death dramas which promote clichés. Having said that, some of the scenes in this episode were difficult to sit through. The fact that Rubina isn’t reliable and is definitely not the ideal person to look after the children has been well-established by now and this part of the drama should be wrapped up. She shouldn’t be getting so much screen time because most of these are filler scenes which could easily have been chopped down.

In this episode, Tabbasum’s brother tries to convince her that she should somehow stop this divorce from happening. Although, right now Tabbasum doesn’t feel too “strong” but she isn’t confused any more about what she wants. (meta-calculator.com) Her conversation with Sidra helps her understand things better and she also gets a chance to analyze her own situation when she is teaching the girls. The writer has also shown that a teacher can play an important role in educating her students in such a manner that they are more informed about their rights. I find Tabbasum’s nieces’ discussions with their mother very interesting too because every time these girls say something it is simple yet more sensible than everything their mother has to say. Once again through their scenes the viewers were shown why the parents and guardians would be more comfortable teaching their daughters rules which are more in line with our social norms. It was funny watching a woman who completely controls her husband and is totally capable of brainwashing other men (Abid) telling her daughters that women should do whatever their husbands and in laws want once they are married!

I also really like the way it has been shown that how the absence of a responsible mother affects children’s lives. One really important message in this episode, which I completely agree with was that children shouldn’t be allowed to watch news channels and grown ups shouldn’t discuss issues which don’t concern children in front of them. This happens in our households all the time and most often people don’t even think about the repercussions. Sajjad’s boss told him off once again, this particular aspect of the story has also been well-established therefore this track also needs to be move forward. The viewers perfectly understand now the flaws in his personality and the reasons behind them. . I am waiting for the time when Sajjad will realize how wrong he was and still very interested in Tabbasum’s journey. I must say that I feel for the children more than anyone else at this point.

How many of you watched this episode? Do share your thoughts about it.

Zun Mureed Episode 19 – Review

This latest episode of Zun Mureed showed how Tabbasum’s job and whatever she was teaching at the school affected her relationship with her brother and bhabhi. Her bhabhi is always looking for excuses to mock and criticize her therefore this latest development did not come as a surprise at all. Once again the writer highlighted how people get insecure when they feel that their daughters might feel so loved that they could set their standards a little too high which would make things difficult for them in the future. Everything shown in this latest episode was easy to relate to since in our society people generally do not give their daughters the kind of love and confidence which they give their sons. The notion that daughters shouldn’t be “spoiled” because once they get married they have to compromise is common even in affluent households run by women and men who don’t know any better.

In this episode once again Sajjad felt at ease because he was so sure that Rubina could run the house better than Tabbasum! Ignorance isn’t always a bliss because Sajjad will ultimately have to pay a big price for being so ignorant and arrogant. Right now it doesn’t look like he will change his stance or show some flexibility anytime soon! Rubina’s scenes were repetitive, she is doing more harm than good and she is also getting plenty of screen time! Some of Tabbasum’s dialogues tonight too were same as the ones we have heard before. It was however good to see Tabbasum not showing her vulnerabilities and feelings in front of people who couldn’t care less about how she felt. Fari’s role in this episode was positive too and her conversations with Tabbasum are the highlight of every episode. One thing which I don’t understand is that why does Bi Jaan not have a phone. If she can write, she can also message using a phone or dial a number and get in touch with either Sajjad or Maryam. Her disability in this respect doesn’t quite make sense. She has not shared how she feels about the new maid and what she has heard with anyone. Sajjad would probably not believe her any way but sharing these details with Maryam could help even though she too has her own limitations now but she could knock some sense into Sajjad.

Zun Mureed Episode 19 - Review

Tabbasum got the first notification for divorce in this episode and her bhabhi and brother’s reaction was as dramatic as it could have been. All the conversations her bhabhi had with her husband revolved around the taboos attached to divorce and everything she said was indeed true. Once again the viewers were shown how a woman alone is judged in such circumstances and no one questions the man who gives the divorce. The preview of the next episode showed Maryam’s husband threatening her once again and it seems like things will most likely get worse for Maryam in the upcoming episode.

Zun Mureed has tons to offer but the story needs to pick up pace. This drama depicts realistically and in detail what a woman goes through when she decides to take a stand for herself. The script never goes off track but the story has really slowed down. I am looking forward to more interesting developments in the upcoming episodes.

Zun Mureed Episode 18 Review – Meaningful As Usual

Zun Mureed is one of my favorite shows which I always look forward to watching and reviewing. It is one of those very few shows which are discussed in our house because it has so much to offer and gives you so many different perspectives. Apart from many other strong, important and positive messages my most favorite part is that the writer has repeatedly reasserted the fact that a strong and independent woman doesn’t have to hate a man in order to prove that she can survive on her own. The writer has also shown that even the strongest of women feel like giving up sometimes and they are equally capable of being heartbroken. A strong woman can love a man and compromise for him but she also knows when to take a stand for herself. I absolutely love all these beautiful messages which this drama is giving in a very intelligent manner. Although the pace of this drama has slowed down and there are certain things which can be highly repetitive but with every episode, there are some changes in all the tracks and the conversations are always meaningful and deep. Every episode gives an insight into the mindset of different characters and those factors which shape up their personalities.

Tonight’s episode opened with Tabbasum calling Sajjad so that she could talk to her son Bobby and know how he was doing. Her son’s refusal to talk to her came as yet another rude shock. Bobby has always been shown as an impulsive and emotional child who expects more from his parents than his sister. You can’t help feeling for these kids every time you see them struggling with their circumstances. Fari continues to play an important rule in making sure that Tabbasum doesn’t lose her perspective. She keeps on making Tabbasum understand things and also suggests what she should do. Tabbasum’s bhabhi mind games are getting annoying now and at this point she shouldn’t be getting so much screen time. Even though every time she has a different issue with the sisters but her track is going around in circles and the fact that she does whatever she can to make life tough for Tabbasum has been well established therefore it would have been better if her scenes were chopped down. Sajjad stubbornness has reached such an extent that he is convinced that a maid can run a house better than Tabbasum! Sajjad’s conversations with his friend were one of the many meaningful conversations in this episode. There is absolutely no change in him for obvious reasons and after watching this episode, it seems highly unlikely that he will get a wake up call anytime soon! Sajjad’s only focus right now is to teach Tabbasum a lesson, he couldn’t care less about anyone or anything else! Omair Rana continues to be faultless as an unreasonable and rigid man.

Abid’s character has completely changed and as a result Mariam’s life is very different now. She has to deal with all the things which Tabbasum had to deal with once yet she always called her brother a Zun Mureed. What is happening to Mariam right now is the perfect example of what goes around comes around. It looks like Mariam will eventually realize how wrong she was when her husband abuses her mentally and physically the way Sajjad did. Few weeks back it was impossible to imagine that Abid’s character will take this turn. Khalid Anum and Hina Bayat both are playing their roles brilliantly. These characters have been crucial to the plot so far and they will most likely play a much bigger role in the upcoming episodes.

Tabbasum and Sidra’s conversation was my favorite part of this episode. Everything that they talked about was relevant and on point. This is what we should be highlighting in our dramas and this is what the girls need to hear. Sidra’s plan and the fact that she chose Tabbasum to implement it went to show what an intelligent woman she is. Nadia Khan’s acting has grown on me and Tabbasum’s character has been etched-out so beautifully that it is easy to ignore the shortcomings in her performance.

The preview of the next episode showed how Rubina, the maid is running Sajjad’s house and everyone’s reaction when Tabbasum gets the notice of divorce. Zun Mureed never fails to impress and with the exception of a few scenes which could have been chopped down, this episode was perfect.

Zun Mureed Episode 15 Review – Meaningful!

Every episode of Zun Mureed is more convincing and poignant than the other. This is most certainly one of those dramas which only get better as the story progresses. There was a time when Fari’s character wasn’t very appealing but right now this character is the best thing about Zun Mureed. She isn’t only Tabbasum’s support but also the voice of reason amidst all the chaos. Fari’s character also helps the viewers understand Tabbasum’s circumstances. Her dialogues have been written beautifully and explain why Tabbasum is so upset and not in control any more. Tabbasum’s reaction to everything that has happened recently couldn’t have been shown more realistically. The convincing plot of this drama is one of the main reasons why it is one of my favorite plays right now. The writer has explained and shown everything from the character development to the mindset behind toxic masculinity in detail and with every episode the situations change in some way. In this episode the writer focused on the reasons why even strong women like Tabbasum ultimately think about giving up. In the past few episodes the viewers have been watching how Tabbasum turned from a woman undeterred to one who is now completely clueless! In this episode, the writer gave the reasons for it, after showing them all in detail in the previous few episodes and also showed the shift in Abid’s character!

Tabbasum’s bhabhi thought she was finally going to get rid of her nand and her kids therefore it is even more difficult for her now to accept the fact that Tabbasum might be living with them forever. Calling Abid and convincing him to be a “man” just like his brother in law seemed to be her last resort which surely worked! This change in Abid is going to affect Sajjad’s household a lot since Maryam has been the one running the house and Sajjad cannot possibly handle it all alone. Although most often Sajjad couldn’t care less about the children or his mother but he holds his own comfort very dear therefore there is a possibility that he might eventually accept Tabbasum. I was really looking forward to Tabbasum and Sidra’s meeting but that was not shown in this episode. This episode covered the next 24 hours of whatever the viewers were shown in the previous episode therefore that meeting will probably be covered next week when Tabbasum finally accepts what has happened and decides to take the first step forward after the socking developments which happened recently.

Zun Mureed Episode 15 Review - Meaningful!

The children got plenty of screen time too in this episode. While the scenes covering Tabbasum’s children showed how they viewed this entire situation, Tabbasum’s nieces’ questions from their mother gave an insight into the kind of things they were inquisitive about. Tabbasum’s kids are missing school and they now have to worry about things they were not even concerned about when their mother was there. Tabbasum’s brother most often fails to take a stand for his sister but in this episode he did not listen to everything his wife had to say. Tonight’s episode had quite a few meaningful conversations to its credit. Like every other episode of Zun Mureed this one too was well-executed and meaningful.

Zun Mureed Episode 14 Review – Brilliant!

This was one of my favorite episodes of Zun Mureed, it was brilliantly penned down and executed flawlessly. There wasn’t a single unnecessary scene in this episode and it had the perfect flow. All the actors gave brilliant performances which definitely contributed to the overall impact every conversation had. Tonight’s episode opened with Tabbasum having a conversation with her sister Fari about how she too had contributed to the house from which she was forced to leave and doesn’t have the option of going back to. I absolutely loved how the writer showed that a woman can actually be homeless even when she has two houses – one which she help buy and build up and the other one which she also has a share in! The reason for this is that both these houses are not in her name. The parents most often trust their sons enough that they leave matters in their hands and when a woman is happily married she too is hardly ever given the option of legally owning the house she lives in and the thought never crosses her mind either. When a husband decides to leave his wife or if there are problems in a marriage, it is always the woman who has to leave the house and therefore while the man is well settled in a house he has always lived in, the woman doesn’t only have to deal with the emotional pain but also such practical aspects of the situation. Although Sajjad’s house too is a mess ever since Tabbasum left but the fact is that he couldn’t care less who is running the house and how. The only thing he is focused on right now is to do whatever it takes to repair his bruised ego and convince himself that he didn’t do anything wrong!

Tabbasum’s situation today gave the viewers tons to reflect upon. In order to get her share from her brother, she will have to upset him because thanks to the double standards which exist in our society, when a man takes over her sister or wife’s property no one questions him but if a woman even asks for her share she is instantly an outcast! While the entire burden of making and breaking a house is on a woman’s shoulder, no one is willing to give her the actual ownership of that house!! I loved Fari’s conversation with her college friend in which she suggested that women should have some form of security legally in case of a divorce or a situation similar to that of Tabbasum’s.

Zun Mureed Episode 14 Review - Brilliant!

Tabbasum and Sajjad’s scene was brilliantly executed since it was just the two of them, the background score and the overall impact of that scene was remarkable. I also really liked the scene in which Tabbasum’s nieces question their mother about her possible reaction if they were to face a similar situation.

In this episode for the first time the viewers were told the background because of which Sajjad is so “spoiled”! The reasons given were enough to explain Sajjad’s narcissistic personality. He is so self-absorbed that a cricket match he is interested in is more important than anything else which is happening around him – whether it is his mother giving his wife a tough time or his children crying for their mother! The way his sister glorified these negative attributes of his personality also showed why he has such a difficult admitting his mistakes. Hopefully now those viewers who always found it difficult to understand why Sajjad hit Tabbasum, will be able to identify with the entire situation. I cannot praise Omair Rana’s acting enough. He is absolutely brilliant in this role. Hina Bayat, Shamim Hilali, Aisha Gul and Khalid Anum’s performances have also been spot on right from the first episode.

Sidra’s call and her offer couldn’t have come at a better time. I am eagerly looking forward to finding out how this second meeting between Tabbasum and Sidra goes and how in the long run these two characters influence each other. Tabbasum’s bhabhi’s reaction and especially the dialogue about “Dayan bhi jati tu….” was yet another attempt to blame Tabbassum for this recent development as well. She always twists the truth to make Tabbasum feel guilty. Her character represents all those people in our society who feel the need to intervene in everyone’s affairs and take no responsibility for the outcome.

Zun Mureed is going strong and manages to deliver every week. It is my favorite drama nowadays which never disappoints. The preview of the next episode was really interesting. Can’t wait to watch the next episode!

Zun Mureed Episode 13 Review – Impressive!

Zun Mureed continues to be poignant and compelling. It gets better with every passing episode and the pace of this drama couldn’t have been more perfect. Every single development is well-thought-out which is why each episode is filled with powerful messages which are conveyed effectively. The fact that the script is realistic makes it easier for the viewers to connect to different scenarios. The character development has also been convincing throughout. This was yet another episode of Zun Mureed which had a lot of important developments to its credit which were presented faultlessly.

For the past few weeks, the writer established this fact really well that Tabbasum wasn’t fighting this case to satisfy her ego but she was doing so to ensure her safety and also because she wanted to set the right example for her daughter. Therefore tonight when Tabbasum felt disappointed when Sajjad didn’t even try to reconcile, it was totally understandable. Perhaps subconsciously she thought that taking the case back was a first step towards a reconciliation. Even though she said that she didn’t want to go back but at the same time she still expected better from Sajjad. It is a fact that at this point, if Sajjad realizes that he was wrong and he decides to make things work, everything will be okay. While Tabbasum’s perspective has always been more practical and sensible, Sajjad has been widely influenced by all the pressure in his own house to take control and to adhere to the gender role which is generally assigned to men in a household. Like many men in our society, he feels that acknowledging his mistake will weaken his “toxic masculinity” which is why he fails to look at things objectively. The only way he can save his manliness now is by “punishing” Tabbsum is the worst way possible. The attitude of his mother pretty much sums up why Sajjad was never taught how to respect his wife and to accept his mistakes!

Tabbasum’s bhabhi yet again played an integral role in making sure that the kids go back to their father’s house and is now doing whatever she can to convince Tabbasum to go back too. Most of the characters in this drama show a certain mindset which is definitely very common in our society. It is impossible to please people and it is even more difficult for women to live life according to their terms and conditions because women are constantly dependent on either their brothers, parents or their husbands. Even women who are economically independent sometimes find it difficult to break free from abusive husbands, a primary example being Sidra, who hasn’t taken a divorce from her husband even after all these years. Even a strong woman like Tabbasum found it difficult to stand her ground and by showing this the writer has realistically shown the challenges faced by someone in such a situation.

All the conversations tonight were beautifully penned down and they were executed flawlessly too. The scenes were to the point and well acted out. Zun Mureed’s script has tons to offer and continues to impress. The preview of the next episode suggested that Sajjad might file for a divorce very soon! This drama can also serve as a reality check for all such men out there, who find pleasure in dominating their wives but let other women in their lives (like their mothers and sisters) control their decisions completely!! Well done team Zun Mureed!

Zun Mureed Episode 12 Review – Poignant & Perfect

Tonight’s episode of Zun Mureed was emotional, powerful and the messages it delivered were right on point as usual. The shift in Tabbsum’s character was poignant as well as convincing. Tabbasum lost the job she was relying on, she feels that she hasn’t done a great job raising her son because she is being made to feel that way and most importantly she just met a woman who was unable to leave her abusive husband even though she was financially stable and educated. This change in Tabbasum’s character makes her more relatable than ever, I have always liked the “human” element in her character. She is a strong woman but she is also sensitive. Unlike her husband, she is constantly reflecting upon her situation and she is not afraid to admit when she feels she has gone wrong somewhere. Her sister kept on reminding her why she took this step in the first place but for now it looks like Tabbasum made a decision simply because she is “tired”. Will Sajjad’s cold behaviour give her energy to go on? Will it remind her why she took this step and why she needs to continue? Meeting Sidra didn’t help Tabbasum in any way perhaps because their meeting ended abruptly and Tabbasum made certain conclusions from the little information she got from Sidra. The fact that Tabbasum admitted that she was “tired” was enough to justify what she was about to do.

All the developments in tonight’s episode were covered perfectly, this was one of the best episodes of Zun Mureed because it covered so much in such a short time. From Bi Jaan’s sick mindset to Maryam’s controlling tactics – the writer, the director and the actors involved translated each scenario impeccably on screen! All these people are mentally sick in their own way. Sajjad’s reaction to this latest development was the highlight of this episode since it showed a side of this man which hasn’t been shown before. Sajjad is actually a coward who cannot forgive his wife for being so brave! He is scared of Tabbasum and what she can do and his rudeness seems to be his defence mechanism! The message here is loud and clear – there is nothing normal about hitting women and men who hit their wives are like Sajjad and Jamil! The mindset of such men has been shown impressively, they feel threatened by women for no reason and do whatever they can to assure themselves that they are in control. Sajjad’s attitude before and even when he met Tabbasum went to show that he was not going to be flexible since he had convinced himself that his wife was a stubborn and unreasonable woman.

Zun Mureed Episode 12 Review - Poignant & PerfectThe point regarding how women who back out in such situations are often judged was also very true and important. Basically, no matter what Tabbasum does next, she will be judged and she will have to suffer the consequences in some way or the other. While Tabbasum seems willing to show some flexibility because of her kids, Sajjad has never once thought about his children in that way. Sajjad only wants to be forgiven right now, he doesn’t care much about anything else.  Maryam also made it clear number of times tonight that Tabbasum was not going to come back to the house therefore the sole purpose of this entire exercise is to make sure that Sajjad is safe. Bi Jaan wants Tabbasum dead simply because that thought gives her something to be happy about! Shamim Hilali and Hina Bayat’s expressions in this scene were brilliant. Their expressions clearly showed how differently they wanted to hurt Tabbasum. While Maryam wants Tabbasum to live to regret her decision, Bi Jaan’s negativity has no end. Omair Rana and Khalid Anum’s performances have been outstanding throughout.

I absolutely loved this latest episode of Zun Mureed and it ended on a perfect note too.

Do share your thoughts about tonight’s episode.

Zun Mureed Episode 12 Audio Review

Zun Mureed Episode 11 Review – Going Strong!

Tonight’s episode of Zun Mureed had plenty of important and unexpected developments to its credit. Just like every other episode of this drama, this one too showed bitter realities of our society and showed that so-called educated and affluent men were just as capable of hitting their wives as those people who do not know better. It also highlighted the fact that one of the major reasons why most women put up with abuse is that they have no one to turn to! In a society where men are considered superior beings and custodians, it is truly ironic that when these men fail to fulfill their responsibilities, there is hardly anyone who holds them accountable. This episode also showed what kind of men were dead against the Women’s Protection Bill and why. Once again, the writer intelligently explained that a man who hits his wife once is bound to do it again by showing the example of the school principal who put up with domestic abuse for the longest time.

Tonight’s episode opened with Maryam and her husband discussing the usual problems they face running Sajjad’s house and their thoughts on the Women’s Protection Bill. The dialogues as usual were extremely well-written and delivered. Maryam’s husband is supportive and it is almost as if he has no family or life of his own. Even though she has the perfect married life but she couldn’t see another woman, who also happened to be her bhabhi, happy! All these characters and situations are highly relatable since having two different sets of standards and principles for your own self and for others is quite common in our society. Hina Bayat and Khalid Anum’s performances have been faultless throughout which is a big reason why it is always easy connecting to their characters.

Zun Mureed Episode 11 Review - Going Strong!

Tabbasum decided she needed to go back to work after her brother’s warning. I really like the fact that even though Tabbasum has been through so much but she has never been shown as a victim. Instead of mulling over what her brother said, she decided to do something about the situation. Unlike many other dramas which are bent on making women in such situation the ultimate becharis, this one shows a woman who refuses to be a bechari even though she has very little support. It is also good that Tabbasum has some support in the house, Fariha does whatever she can to help. Tabbasum’s encounter with Jamil sahab and later on her meeting with his ex-wife have given a different turn to this story. I am waiting to see how this latest development will affect Tabbasum’s track.

Tabbasum’s bhabhi got a lot of screen time in this episode as well. All her scenes showed how her constant bickering and brain washing was making it difficult for Tabbasum to live in the house. Tabbasum’s brother only wants the kids to go back to their father’s house because of the stories his wife told him. Tabbasum does not entertain disrespect and abuse but at the same time she misses her husband and even though she knows that she also has a share in the house, she is letting her brother stay in it. Even when Sajjad wanted her to ask for her share, she didn’t entertain that thought. Tabbasum is a strong woman but she is also someone who will compromise to make her relationships work. She is someone who chooses her battles wisely and fights them with all her might. She is definitely one of the finest women leads we have seen in recent times in our dramas.

How many of you watched tonight’s episode? Do share your thoughts about it.

Zun Mureed Episode 10 Review – Convincing!

Tonight’s episode of Zun Mureed laid the foundations for one of the most important developments in the story which will probably be happening really soon. Zun Mureed’s script so far is convincing as well as relevant. The writer has logically shown the repercussions of Tabbasum’s decision to file a report against her husband from every possible angle. The drama has a steady pace and apart from showing some of the bitter realities of our society, it also has an inspiring protagonist who continues to fight her case against all odds. This recent episode had a lot of important developments and unlike the previous episodes, Nadia Khan’s acting tonight was up to the mark. Tabbasum’s character and her struggles are easy to relate to. The dialogues are exceptionally well-written and are the highlight of every episode. Most of these dialogues either represent a certain mindset or give hope to other women like Tabbasum. The writer has tactfully ensured that the women watching this play get fully acquainted with their rights since the line between what a husband can and can’t do is intentionally blurred in our society!

Sajjad finally thought long and hard about everything which transpired that day. He was also reminded of all those times when Tabbasum went out of her way to show how much she loved him and also those happy moments when they thought nothing could ever go wrong between them. These were my favorite scenes from this episode because they helped the viewers connect to Sajjad’s character and understand what was going on in his mind. Sajjad was still too angry to admit that he was wrong, every time he thought about what Tabbasum said and how she made him feel, instead of feeling guilty, he became even more upset. Sajjad continued to judge Tabbasum and failed to reflect upon his own actions. On the contrary, it looked like, he blamed Tabbasum for ruining their “perfect life” by taking this extreme step. Although, Sajjad is now willing to be flexible but he is not going to accept that he was wrong. His manliness won’t allow him to accept his mistake and as a result even if Tabbasum does come back, there will still be major differences between them. Omair Rana has done complete justice to his character. His solid performance makes it easier for the viewers to understand the character since Sajjad’s character is layered therefore only a solid performer could have brought it to life impeccably on screen and Omair Rana has done just that!

Zun Mureed Episode 10 Review - Convincing!

Tabbasum always knew that the road she had chosen to take won’t be an easy one but even then she didn’t expect everything to go this wrong. It is true that Tabbasum has a share in her parents’ house but her brother doesn’t want to hear about it. If he gives her the share which is rightfully hers, she won’t have to be dependent on anyone but in our society when sisters ask for their share, brothers most often get offended! Although, Tabbasum never asked for her share but even then her bhabhi managed to use this matter against her. The fact is that Tabbasum’s brother is not doing her a favor by letting her stay in this house. I absolutely love the way Tabbasum’s character has been etched-out, she is strong but she isn’t unreasonable or insensitive. Her character is positive and her dialogues are always meaningful. The phone call from the school principal was an important development in this episode, I am waiting to see what she has to say to Tabbasum.

Bi Jaan and Maryam’s conversation in this episode was disturbing! Unfortunately, there are plenty of such mother and sister in laws in our society who cannot see their brothers and sons happily married. The bahus are always treated as outsiders or lesser humans because they are seen as a threat! Shamim Hilali and Hina Bayat both have been performing really well throughout. I especially liked Shamim Hilali’s expressions today when she wrote on her white board. With the exception of few of the supporting actors, all the other performances tonight were right on point. With a better cast and production values, this drama could have been even more impactful and perhaps more enticing for some of the viewers too.

This was one of my favorite episodes of Zun Mureed. How many of you watched it? Don’t forget to share your thoughts about it.

Zun Mureed Episode 1 & 2 Review – Well-Executed

Writer: Amna Mufti
Director: Ahmed Kamran
Produced by: Moomal Entertainment
Schedule: Every Friday at 8pm on HUM

The first two episodes of Zun Mureed laid down solid foundations for whatever is going to happen in the upcoming weeks. The introduction to the characters was detailed as well as clear and both these episodes were fast paced. In both these episodes, the writer and the director’s approach was focused and all the scenes were well-put-together. Although I had my reservations about Nadia Khan since her performance in Aisi Hei Tanhai leaves a lot to be desired but so far her acting has been up to the mark. Omair Rana, Hina Bayat, Shamim Hilali, Aisha Gul, Kashif Mehmood and Khalid Anum always perform well therefore it didn’t come as a surprise at all that they fit perfectly in the roles assigned to them. The performances were natural, the direction was on point and the editing was perfect. I have to admit that the only reason I tuned into this show was because it promised to cover the issue of domestic abuse from a legal perspective and also because it has been written by Amna Mufti which guarantees that the script will be well-researched and meaningful.

Zun Mureed Episode 1 & 2 Review - Well-Executed

The first scene of the opening episode was one of my favorite scenes from both these episodes since it covered a great deal. This scene showed how Tabbasum (Nadia Khan) was struggling alone while her husband Sajjad (Omair Rana) and Bi Jaan’s (Shamim Hilali) son focused entirely on the cricket match. This scene clearly suggested that Bi Jaan was Tabbasum’s responsibility alone although Mariam Apa (Hina Bayat), Bi Jaan’s daughter, claimed to love her mother more than anyone else but there were a lot of times when she wasn’t half as patient as Tabbasum with her mother. The thing I liked about the characters the most was that they were nuanced, while Tabbasum was shown as someone who had a good heart and was dedicated but there were plenty of times when she was shown struggling with her situation. The scenes covering her character were realistic and showed how difficult it was for her to cope with everything yet she didn’t complain because she felt it was her duty to work and to look after the house. Also, while there were times when it seemed like Sajjad couldn’t care less how Tabbasum was coping there were also plenty of scenes in which he acknowledged and appreciated her efforts. The reference to Tabbasum’s share in her late parents assets however suggested that Sajjad is the kind of man who wouldn’t mind living off his wife’s money.

Bi Jaan is an educated woman yet she has a typical mindset. Even after everything Tabbasum did for Bi Jaan, she didn’t get any acknowledgement, something which was shown creatively through the scene in which Bi Jaan writes Mariam and Sajjad’s name alone. Also, just like any other controlling mother in law, Bi Jaan cannot see her son spending quality time with his wife and terms him as zun mureed, even though her own son in law was shown doing exactly what his wife expected from him.

Zun Mureed Episode 1 & 2 Review - Well-Executed

The first episode in particular also showed how Fari, Tabbasum’s sister, was treated by her bhabhi and how things were in their brother’s (Khalid Mehmood) house. The news about Women Protection Bill got different kind of reactions from both these houses and Tabbasum in particular kept on asserting that such laws were made for violent men in low income households. She couldn’t imagine at this point that her husband would some day turn into such a man.

Overall, these two episodes were engaging and executed flawlessly. Although these episodes didn’t have anything brand new to offer but they weren’t clichéd either. I felt an instant connection with all the characters because of the way they were introduced. The script has the kind of clarity that doesn’t leave any questions in your mind and the director has given this script the right kind of treatment.

How many of you watched these two episodes? Don’t forget to share your thoughts about them.
