Lahore High Court serves notice to PEMRA for banning Indian TV content

0

Lahore High Court served notices to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) and Federal Information Ministry and sought reply from them by February 9. Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah passed the order on petition filed by M/S Leo Communication.

In October 2016, Pemra imposed complete ban on airing of Indian content in Pakistan and directed all satellite television channels and radio stations to follow the code of conduct or face repercussions. Advocate Taffazul Rizvi, counsel for petitioner, said his client in 2010 had been granted a 15-year licence by Pemra to operate a cable channel, ‘Filmazia’ and under the licence it was allowed to broadcast 10 per cent of foreign content including Indian.

He argued that Pemra, without citing any legal reason in October, 2016 issued an order to ban all Indian content on cable channels in Pakistan. He further said “The government is indulging in selective patriotism as Indian movies are allowed to be exhibited in cinemas all over the country showing its double standards.”

The petitioner prayed the court to set aside the circular issued against them and allow them airing foreign content. After hearing the arguments, LHC Chief observed that when Indian movies are being screened in cinemas in the country then what reason Pemra or government has to ban Indian content on Pakistan TV screens. The court adjourned the hearing till February 9.

Khizar Idress while praising actress Ayeza Khan, mentioned that “There were a few scenes written of Ayeza while making a TikTok in the script. Ayeza Khan herself did a lot of effort for her character. The costumes, the TikTok videos everything was decided by Ayeza herself.”

Laapata's Writer Praises Ayeza Khan

“Ayeza portrayed this character much better than what was actually written in script. Ayeza did a lot of research on different TikTokers to get some idea for her character. The credit surely goes to Ayeza for her remarkable performance in Laapata”, added Khizar Idress.

Laapata Episode 19 – Fans Criticized Objectionable Scene

The dramas in Pakistan are known to be realistic. It is rare to see the situations that are over the top but in recent events the storytelling of almost all the channels has become over be it showing a girl sitting on the top of the passenger bus, putting up harassment allegations on the shopkeeper while doing grocery or showing up the notion of foster siblings as couple.

The same has happened when makers of Laapata added a little more spice to an already complexed scene of a girl behind the bars, they put the girl in a locker with men. Yes, in that particular scene of episode 19, Falak was imprisoned in the same locker with men when Shams came to meet her. Not only this when he shouted the police warned him.

Sanam Baloch invited Laaleen to her show and she had a panel of lawyer and psychologists who listened to her story. They also attempted to figure out where the main problem lied and tried to educate girls through Laaleen’s story.

Laaleen shared that her husband abused her mentally, physically and even financially. Even after the divorce he creates problems for her and does not follow the court’s ruling. Everything she said shed light on how the rulings were given by the courts but even if one party did not abide by them, there wasn’t much which could be done about it. She also shared what she had gone through in 11 years and why she stayed in this marriage.

Laal Kabootar Leads Talk About The Film And Their Parts

Ever since Laal Kabootar has been announced, it’s getting us excited more and more. Now, the cast was revealed and they finally spoke about what their roles are and what the film is going to be like. Mansha Pasha, who is the protagonist in the film, said, “My role is extremely challenging. She’s the female protagonist in the film, and something happens to her which she has to overcome with a lot of personal turmoil. The film is largely about what she does; it’s an intense role, which was truly quite challenging to perform.”

She continued, ““My role is obviously different because the way the film has been done is unlike anything that I have seen before. It’s a lot like Sacred Games, so I think my fans will like it. It’s a Karachi-based story and shows the interaction of the city with the characters in the film. All of that makes it unique.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/BnfKJ6elQ9A/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Ahmed Ali Akbar who is playing a very important role in the film said, “‘I have done theatre as well as films. The process of this movie was very close to theatre when it comes to training as Kamal had started talking about the character six months before it went on floor. I would often discover new things about the character during rehearsals and we did those quite often even with cinematographer Mo Azmi. One thing which I have to say is that shooting for the film was one of the best experience I have had.”

Ali Kazmi who plays a role of a journalist said, “First of all I love action thrillers, so what attracted me to this project is the vision of the director Kamal Khan and the Nehar Ghar films. It’s a super team, very organized, great production design and extremely talented young filmmakers that want to push the envelope of Pakistani filmmaking. I am very interested and excited to see the audience response to this film because it is a genre not much explored here. So get ready for a wild ride with Laal Kabootar.”

Laal Ishq Last Episode Review – A Terrible End

After singing praises for this play for many months now, I didn’t want to criticise its end. Hence I watched the episode twice, thrice but cannot say anything better about it. It was a disaster, an illogical, incomplete and very silly disaster. Nothing made sense, no problem got closure and no character reached it’s intended destination. It seemed like the writer suddenly had an idea of a sequel so he lost all interest in this drama or the episodes were cut short due to some reason, because this certainly cannot be the natural progression of such a good drama. It’s like the drama didn’t end, it just died an accidental death.

If we discuss the points separately, all of them will be equally pointless. If Yawar Kamal though that police could solve the matter, why was he the one who had fired at Punar and Munir first. If he had gotten the police involved at that time and made sure that law is not taken into Punar’s hands , the drama would have had a totally different path. And Mehr Punar, the hero was reduced to a bad- mouthed abusive goon at the very end. For a drama that’s named on ishq, it didn’t suit that the hero had used and abused a girl in the name of love and then forcefully married her in the name of revenge. It’s one thing to be stuck in desperate circumstances and totally another to change your intrinsic character and nature. That is a sign of extremely poor characterisation. Aabi Khan has lost all his charm in these three episodes, going from a hero to an illiterate aggressive villain. It’s a terrible thing to show that a supposed hero does not even have basic respect for women or elders.

For the other hero, Arsalan Idrees did a brilliant job all the way but his end was also quite abrupt and out of character. Just a few tears and he was willing to forget Mahi, his love, his wife for whom he was willing to take all bullets. Speaking of cowardice, Rameen also took a very weak and pathetic stance at the end. A girl who thrived on dialogues like sharton par toh main tum say milnay na ayun, tum shadi ki bat kartay ho, and who convinced Farhad to take a stand for his love, becomes so weak that she is willing to sacrifice everything so Mehrunnisa can end the hatred and animosity.  That was not Rameen, infact the whole new generation who had shown that they are different, progressive and openminded, did not bring about the change of mindsets, rather they are all sacrificed for the sake of age old battle.

At the very end, Mehrunnisa played a low blow and said jug jug jeo to Bali before turning and stabbing him with something she must’ve hidden in her shawl, and that was that. There was not even any clarity whether Bali was killed or not, or now that Rameen has been unable to save her father, will she stay Punar’s wife or not? And how will Farhad bear the loss of Mahi? Will they all just forget Mahi like that? So many questions and no real answers…

Laal Ishq Episodes 20-23 Review – Still Going Strong

These four episodes of Laal Ishq have taken the drama forward in huge steps and all of them equally engaging, intriguing and yet all the more complicated. For Ansa Mehrunnisa aka one woman army of Laal Ishq, things are downhill since the day she has found out the identity of Farhad and Rameen. First her world came crashing down when she got to know that she had unknowingly engaged her daughter to the man’s daughter whose blood she is thirsty for. Secondly, to her utter dismay, her strength, Mehr Punaar has fallen in love with Bali’s daughter. That makes him leave Bali unharmed not once but twice because of the love that he has for her. The first time, mamoo Munir tried to do his job but Punaar stopped him the middle, which made Bali hurt and hospitalized but not fatally. This was so difficult for Mehrunnisa to grasp that she lost all senses in anger. Her effect was so much on Punaar that he agreed not to leave Bali alive the next time he finds him. He even denies his love for Rameen but she is not going to let him go that easily. She reached the restaurant unexpectedly when he and Farhad were meeting and created a huge scene which ultimately made his brother realise that she had also fallen in love.

Mehr Punar is shown very realistically confused. He has been brought up and raised in a way that his sole reason for existence was to take revenge for Hukum’s murder. Now that he has discovered romantic feelings for Rameen, he doesn’t know how to deal with them. He can’t dissociate her identity of being Bali’s daughter away from her and that makes him swing between a love hate pendulum for her. Aabi Khan has consistently been a star in all four episodes.

Farhad is also just amazing as the calm and controlled one. It’s lovely to see all four youngsters with individual personalities and temperaments being so wonderfully played and acted out. Amongst the terribly emotional Punaar and Mahi and Rameen, Farhad is an oasis of calm and thoughtfulness. He is strong but gentle unlike Punar who is gentle at heart but doesn’t quite know how to control his temperament and all that’s expected out of him. That’s understandable though, since they have been raised by totally opposite individuals and they have the characteristics of their parents in them.

Ansa Mehrunnisa has crossed all limits now and went to the extent of putting metal locks in Mahi’s feet to keep an eye on her all the time. Mahi has suffered so much at the hand of her mother, that she has started requesting Farhad to do court marriage with her, which he is almost willing to do but not quite. Mehrunnisa has even shot one of her maids and injured another one because she saw her helping Mahi in talking to Farhad.

The next time Punar and Munir have gone to kill Bali, Rameen comes in front of his father and Punar is helpless in love. He simply shoots at Bali’s feet and this time mamoo Munir also stops and follows Punar home.

Laal Ishq Episodes 20-23 Review - Still Going Strong

On seeing that she is losing a battle, Mehrunnisa gets Mahi engaged and insults Jajji and Rameen when they come to request her for Mahi’s hand. Jajji and Farhad seems to be the only two who are feeling everything, hence they have that tragic expression all the time. The others, including Bali himslef are an example of if you think, life is a comedy. Despite their trials, they still see humor in all of it and that makes Laal Ishq a very interesting watch in an otherwise sad story.

It was very refreshing to see Zahid’s entry as such a good human being. Just by being egngaged to Mahi and that too wrongfully, he fully listens to her and wants to help her. He is such a positive character. Now that Mahi and Farhad are all set to elope secretly with Zahid’s help, Rameen tries to take Punar into confidence but he becomes Mehrunnisa’s son once again and gets really angry at the suggestion of Mahi and Farhad’s court marriage.

The two stars of the episodes were again Mamoo Munir and Mehr Chiragh. Mamoo Munir is such a fun character that I actually look forward to his scenes. Simply amazing…

Laal Ishq Episodes 18&19 Review – Work Of A Genius

These two episodes of Laal Ishq were as mindblowing as expected by a drama that has set such high standards, not from marketing or promotions but sheer good quality script and acting. The inter personal dilemmas are translated in a way that seem truly like a genius at work, or rather many geniuses since everyone is doing a brilliant job. The best thing about this drama is that not one person is inherently bad or evil, they are all bound by their own forces of love, heritage, loyalties and obligations. That is what makes them all so relatatable, so endearing and yet so charismatic. To be honest, I was not very fond of heavy dialogues and meaningful intonations after sadqay tumharay but Laal Ishq changes all of that. Here the dialogues are not merely for adding drama and weight to the situation but they truly add life and soul to the scenes.

In last week’s episode, Punar faced severe repurcussions from both Mehr Chiragh and Mehrunnisa and was even called a female and spineless son by them. Since he is always shown very impressionable and awed by Mehrunnisa, he has taken a U turn and decided to shake off the stigma of a weakling from himself. On the other hand, a ground is being set for the Mehrs and Jajji’s kids to know that Bali is their real father. Mehr Chiragh adds two into two and concludes that Farhad is Bali’s son and he is very proud of himself to be one step ahead of Mehrunnisa this time in getting justice for Hukum. This makes Mehrunnisa worried but only for a second. The strong and stubborn Mehrunnisa returns in a second and takes away Mahi’s engagement ring. As Bali recovers, Rameen and Farhad get to know that their father is actually called Jajji, so they are very genuinely concerned about their paternity. Eventually Jajji breaks down in front of their harsh questioning and tells them the truth. Kashif Mehmood has outdone himself, truly and thoroughly. There cannot be a better Jajji impersonating as Iqbal or a better father to tell his kids that he is not their real father. The end of last episode and starting of this one belongs totally to Kashif Mehmood for each and every tear that seems to be coming right from the core of his being.

Laal Ishq Episodes 18&19 Review - Work Of A Genius

The dialogues between Jajji and Bali were hilariously tragic. They make such an interesting duo, with both of them fighting for something that they know is rightfully neither of them fully. Jajji tried to convince Bali that he has done his best to ensure that Farhad and Rameen will hate him and love their real father, but Bali sees right through his facade. He is thankful that his kids were so loved and yet angry that they love his friend like their father and not him. This contradiction of feelings has made Bali so emotional and so helpless that he is almost talking non sense. Babar Ali has yet again proved what a talented actor he is. Bali is the heart of the play and Babar Ali’s acting is the heart of this character. He is simply amazing. I love the way how every character retains their sense of humor, no matter how trying the circumstances are.

Rameen and Farhad were also brilliant as the two youngsters who have suddenly had their whole lives and identities wiped away from them. Their anger is so genuine and yet so mixed with love that they want to hurt Jajji for hiding the truth but not quite. They hate Bali for the havoc he has created in their lives, and yet that have to protect him now. No questions asked. Since he is their biological father, they need to secure his life from Mehr Punaar and his gang.

Punaar has erased all good feelings from his heart or atleast he is trying to. Mahi, on the other hand believed in forgiving Bali right from the start and continues to do so but she is loyal enough to break all ties with Farhad. Farhad however is not going to give up on her this easy and wants to try one time to convince Punar to take his life instead of Bali’s. It was a very well written scene including Rameen’s unexpected arrival and losing her cool and screaming and crying in the hotel lobby, but Punar calling Farhad a dog was totally uncalled for. It would have been much better to end the scene with grace rather than abusive words.

Mehr Chiragh is also leaning towards forgiving Bali now, as he has sensed that his grandkids are irreversibly entwined in Bali’s family now and his death would adversely affect both sets of children. Mamoo Munir, on the other hand is single minded like his sister and would not agree to let Bali Iive at any cost.

Laal Ishq Episodes 18&19 Review - Work Of A Genius

It’s hard to wait a whole week for the next episode to air.

Laal Ishq Episodes 15,16&17 Review – Drama Of The Season

0

If the dramas were truly appreciated for their screen play, plot and acting abilities of lead characters instead of their marketing budgets, I truly believe Lal Ishq would qualify as THE drama of the season. All three of these episodes were mesmerizing and engrossing to the extent that you cannot believe when they actually end and they leave you frantically searching for the promo to see if anything more can be gained from there.

What an amazing three episodes. The story is flowing forward seamlessly. There is an artistic quality to the drama. The way the characters interact with eachother and the way they are fighting their internal battles while pretending to be strong gives it a very life life quality. Despite the fact that the story is extremely dramatic, the drama seems very free from unnecessary drama and over the top actings. The newcomers are doing such a great job that they are actually at par with veterans like Saba Hameed and Waseem Abbas. In the scenes between Mehrunnisa and Mahi, Mahi seems to hold her own as well as Mehrunnisa, which says a lot Faryal Mehmood’s talent.

Rameen and Farhad had accepted Bali as their Jajji uncle. Before they came to know his identity in the seventeenth episode, they even started to care about him like their father’s friend. On the other hand, Mehrunnisa has started preparing for the wedding despite Mahi’s reluctance to leave the house, lest Punar kills Bali and ruins his own life which is Mahi’s biggest fear.

Laal Ishq Episodes 15,16&17 Review - Drama Of The Season

Bali is finally caught by Mehr Punar and that scene was handled absolutely brilliantly. There was no confusion and contradiction in how the characters dealt with the whole situation. It was all pretty straight forward and natural.

Another thing that truly stood out is the amazing portrayal of supporting cast. Usually, the family members of lead characters are useless, baseless and poorly performed but not here. From mamoo Munir to Mojoo uncle to Yawar Kamal, each and every one of these is adding a new dimension to the story without which it would not be the same. They all have their rightful places in the story which the actors are holding up well. From Mojoo’s wide eyed innocence to mamoo Munir’s witty laugh, I wonder who did the casting so well. Seems like an act of genius.

Laal Ishq Episodes 15,16&17 Review - Drama Of The Season

Rameen and Punaar share a beautiful love hate chemistry. In her own way, she has planted a seed of forgiveness for Bali in Punar’s heart, which Mahi and Yawar Kamal were unable to do. In a very emotional sequence, Bali is willing to sacrifice his life for Farhad’s happiness and Punar comes at the right moment to take his life. However, Rameen’s words start resounding in his ears and while he is deliberating, mamoo Munir has done his job which might not have been a very successful murder attempt since Punar tried to save Bali.

Laal Ishq Episodes 15,16&17 Review - Drama Of The Season

Do watch this drama if you are almost sick of Pakistani dramas’ typical stories and substandard acting performances. It is romance, action, thrill and murder all entwined beautifully to create a masterpiece. Cannot wait for the next episode.

Laal Ishq Episode 25 Review – Exciting But Slow

This was the first episode that did a great job as usual in making you look forward to the next one but sadly, did not give much to reflect upon on its own. It would have been wonderful if a little more had been shown about the aftermath of Mahi’s death.

Laal Ishq Episode 25 Review - Exciting But Slow

In the dark of the night, as it poured heavily and the heavens cried on the death of an innocent, Punar and Muneer have made an anonymous grave for Mahi in the woods, where she will be quiet forever and the spark of her life, her love all has blown out. Mehr Chiragh could not stop his tears and while it was so hard to see him sad, it was also harder to forget that he had been ally in the silencing of the only voice of life in their haveli.

Laal Ishq Episode 25 Review - Exciting But Slow

Farhad has the feeling of loss in his heart. He knows something is wrong with Mahi, and he is not able to calm down. Arsalan Idrees was just amazing in his short scene today. His expressions, body language and tone, everything was perfect in depicting the agony of a lover who was so close to his destination and suddenly it has slipped out of his hand again. He has made Bali and Jajji aware of the dangers he thinks Mahi is in and Jajji is now realising what a blunder he has committed in forcing Farhad to send Mahi back.

Laal Ishq Episode 25 Review - Exciting But Slow

In the Mehr household, Mehrunnisa is shedding crocodile tears. She is an evil woman, a vengeful soul whose existence is enough to destroy all sorts of goodness in her surroundings. She has killed her beautiful, loving daughter in her hatred for someone who has spent twenty years in prison already and knowing full well that Mahi and Farhad did know about eachother’s paternal identity when they fell in love. Worse is Punar who is her puppet. What’s the point of showing Punar as the soft and kind youngster of today if he is going to be this cruel at the end. His sadness at Mahi’s demise was certainly not enough. There should have been some forgiveness for his only sister and some anger at the mother who killed her in cold blood.

Now Jajji and Bali are trying to do damage control and they have gone to Yawar Kamal for help and advice. It seems as if Yawar Kamal, Jajji, Bali, Farhad and even Mahi herself were not aware of the dangers of Mehrs’ anger. It took Fakhira to point out to them that they would not be heartbroken at the running away of their daughter. Rather, Mehr Chiragh is heartbroken beacuse Mahi has been killed.

The promo was very promising. It seems as if Rameen will go to any extent to save Farhad and Punar will cross all limits of cruelty and revenge and maybe marry her forcefully , since her mother’s fasts are now dependent on Farhad’s death, not Bali’s. Whole lives are  being wrecked and ruined at the whim of a woman who fasts everyday in the prayer that her enemy’s murder will free her of this pact of unending fasts. By the way she is in remarkable health for someone who is eating nothing but dates and water for twenty years. A raw vegan Mehrunnisa, thirsty for human blood…

Laal Ishq Episode 24 Review – Deadly

This was such a happening episode that it has to reviewed alone. From such a beautiful start to such a tragic ending, every scene was shot to perfection.. And finally love has claimed another life, this time a totally innocent one. How beautiful was Mahi as a bride and how happy to be free of that revenge laden, suffocating environment and how grateful at such acts of kindness by a total stranger whom she had a few days’ engagement with.

And then sadly her ancestory and their grudges caught up with her, but this time Mehrunnisa is not alone to be blamed. Everyone knew she is crazy and blood thirsty, and yet Punar threatened Jajji to send her back, and Jajji emotionally blackmailed Farhad and Farhad made her agree to go there, and then stupidly listened to her and let her go all by herself. All of these people loved Mahi, and all of them inadvertently pushed her to her tragic end. Dada ji knew that she was going to be killed by Mehrunnisa but he did nothing to stop her. It’s true that she has made a mistake in going at night, cheating to everybody and lying to her mother, but she had a right to her life, and they had forced her to the extent that this was her only option.

What disturbed me the most was perhaps Punaar’s dual standards. He felt he was justified to fall in love and even do court marriage with Rameen, but when it came to Mahi and Farhad,  he becomes so violent and aggressive at their court marriage. Hypocrisy at it’s peak. Taking back all the good words I had ever said about him. He is Mehrunnisa’s son, through and through. He thinks only his and his lover’s love have value, rest everyone else’s love can be switched on and off according to his suitability. This is what his mother does and this is what he is doing. I’m jut too sad that he played such a vital part in Mahi’s demise. The sister who postponed her love marriage so she could protect her brother’s life, who cried each time he got even slightly wounded, who was his biggest confidante and he will probably just bury her in the dark of the night in the next episode.

As always, it was a brilliantly shot episode with emotions raging high and everyone doing full justice to their characters, in every single way. From Zahid’s generosity to Mahi’s innocent happiness to Farhad’s sadness at having to drop her back, to Jajji’s fear of what might become of the situation, to Bali’s helplessness, to Mehrunnisa’s violence, to dada jee’s resignation of what is about to happen, it was an engrossing and thoroughly engaging episode. Not an easily digestible one, you just keep on thinking and thinking about what just happened.

There is an odd chance that Mehrunnisa did not kill Mahi and Farhad was just having a nightmare, but in all likelihood, it seems as if Mehrunnisa has truly finished the beautiful, happy and loving Mahi and all the gorgeousness that she carried in her heart…

I am not sure whether I take more breaks on the rare occasions that I work out or I did during this episode! I tried to get into it with all the ‘exciting’ events happening but kept finding myself pressing the pause button and tuning in a few minutes later. This is the second drama that I have been reviewing that has come to an end this week and that too before the 20th episode mark. I do feel very lucky, LOL!

I will admit I did not expect Shahzeb to die and Bari Sahab to collapse like she did. So even though this drama did rely on a lot of misleading dream sequences there were a few twists and turns to its credit, but still that did not manage to engage me totally. Sab ko maar, peet, bhaga kay, there was nobody left in the haveli anyway so it took a heart to heart between the nurse and Zainab which of course, Jahanzeb overheard to make him stop and ponder over how caring Zainab is. Sigh. So, Alisha has devoted her life to social awareness now and Mannat has gotten her happily ever after while we are left to assume Zainab may or may not have gotten hers. A number of things bothered me in these last episodes – why did Alisha have to take Zainab’s name, why call the press conference anyway when she knew it would cause further trouble and someone from Sikander or Bari Sb’s family would try to get to Mannat, when did Mannat and Shahmeer get married, is Zainab not in iddat now so why was she flitting around the city – I could go on. I am not sure if Zainab’s love for Jahanzeb and his constant resistance or rejection whatever you may like to call it, was meant to be bittersweet or romantic but it felt neither to me.

Sometimes a drama has a very typical and predictable story but the execution is such that you watch it anyway and enjoy it. After all, why do people watch chick flicks time and again even though they all pretty much follow the same pattern (I have given up on them, but still). Laaj was more filmy than like a drama with the feuding Sikander and Bari Sb, lives lost during the feud, the shehr wali larki, the parha likha walaiti son, the ‘selfless, undying’ love, the suffering granddaughter – the works. The set was colourful but some bits like the walls in the background and even the scene when Shahzeb dies and the blood was soooooo not convincingly blood made the presentation look a bit sloppy at times. Iqra Aziz has weeped her way through the play so seeing her smile in the last episode was probably the only thing that caught my attention, LOL! I do think that Kamran Jillani is quite the underrated actor and I liked how he portrayed his feelings over Shahzeb’s death. I missed Bari Sb in this last episode and would have been nice to see her conscious again. Asma Abbas as Bari Sb was phenomenal and although her ideas were outrageous at times, her dialogues and acting especially when it came to expressing her views over Alisha and Sikander thoroughly entertained me. I hope I never see Sabika Imam in a drama again. Zarnish Khan is an excellent actress and I hope for her sake she has better luck choosing her future projects where her talent can be appreciated.

I have seen promos of a drama with surprise surprise, Iqra Aziz and am assuming that will replace this one. Doubt I will be tuning into that! I would like to thank the readers who read my reviews and shared their thoughts, in particular Rida, Haider and Sabika and most of all Omm E Nida who would read and comment on my reviews every single week What did you all make of this drama and how it ended? Would love to hear your thoughts!
