Its Careem Vs Pepsi Now

0

Earlier Pepsi was known for the Battle of Bands and now it also has the Battle of Brands. Brand war is a thing worldwide. Different brands try to put each other down and this time the war is between soft drink giant Pepsi and travelling company Careem. Careem is known for its quirky promos and funny punch lines. They use social media and engage their followers immensely.

So someone asked Careem to give them a promo code instead of offers to win smartphones. Careem got in some fun mode and replied back where they offered them a free Pepsi in place of a promo code:

Its Careem Vs Pepsi Now

Pepsi was not happy with the above tweet and have their own answer to hit back with:

Its Careem Vs Pepsi Now

Careem then replied to Pepsi as their first tweet was just a joke and they asked Pepsi that they are being extra sensitive:

Its Careem Vs Pepsi Now

Pepsi was not happy with Careem’s reply and hit back with the threat of a legal notice to the company:

Its Careem Vs Pepsi Now

Previously it was between chai or coffee and now its Careem and Pepsi. Brand wars are becoming a norm in Pakistan too. Let’s see whether Careem now lets the threat go or will they be replying back!

Its Bread v/s Dignity!

Recently Fahad Mustafa gave an interview to Images in which he claimed to be the only Pakistani actor who has won stardom and mass appeal without doing any project in Bollywood. This didn’t go well with many people. Even Shaan responded to this by saying:

A lot of good actors have never went to India yet they have been quite popular here including Waheed Murad, Shahid, Rahat Kazmi,  Usman Peerzada, Umar Shareef, Faisal Rehman, Hamza Ali Abbasi, Bilal Ashraf, Faisal Qureshi, Nouman Ejaz and Danish Taimoor.”

What I want to discuss today is whatever we may say about our artists going to Bollywood, the fact is many of our artists have received more recognition and love from the audience after going to Bollywood. Even the industry acknowledged them more after their successful Bollywood stints as they start getting nominations and increase in paychecks. Here are some examples:

Saba Qamar:

Its Bread v/s Dignity!

Saba Qamar is a very versatile actress. She has done all kinds of roles and has justified them with her talent, hardwork and zeal. Whether it is a role of a dukhyaari larki in Thakkan or a vamp in Maat, Saba always did justice to her roles. Saba is and was among the top league actors in Pakistan when she opted for Hindi Medium but what happened afterwards is not hidden from anyone’s eyes. She gained 100 times more love from her fans and audience for her work in the film and suddenly she was the hot favourite of the industry with nominations and praises pouring from everywhere. She raised her paycheck too according to the reports. She boycotted the LSAs this year despite having two nominations and acknowledged this change of attitude herself by saying:

“Although I am nominated for three different plays, I will not be attending the LSAs as a protest,They never bothered to honour me during the past 12 years and now that I have the Bollywood stamp, everyone is acknowledging me all of a sudden.”

Sajal Aly:

Its Bread v/s Dignity!

Sajal Aly is the new addition in Lollywood to Bollywood list and every one has seen how much recognition she has got and was loved to bits for her role in the movie Mom. All of a sudden people who used to bash her for sometimes her looks and sometimes her damsel in distress roles became her ultimate fans and were writing WE LOVE SAJAL on every social media platform. The truth is Sajal has always been a very talented and expressive actress. Be it her role in Nanhi and Behadd or even Gul e Rana Sajal has nailed every character beautifully. Her film Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai despite being a local release was an average success. But people’s love for her has increased four folds after the release of Mom.

Atif Aslam:

Its Bread v/s Dignity!

Atif’s magical voice had a lot of admirers before too but after his track featured in a Bollywood movie; there was no looking back for the star. He is loved and admired now on both sides of the border and his tracks are no doubt a necessity for many Bollywood films. Though he is immensely talented he may not have made this big without the Bollywood part in his life.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan:

Its Bread v/s Dignity!

Hailing form the clan of Ustaad Fateh Ali Khan and nephew and successor of Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Rahat is no doubt a legend and maestro for music. But his fame was actually elevated to the status it is on today after he lent his vocals in Bollywood and today he is one of the huge names of the music industry in Pakistan as well as in India.

Veena Malik:

Its Bread v/s Dignity!

Yes her work definitely is not of the nature of the stars mentioned here but her names demands an inclusion as if not for Bollywood we would not have been even considering her anywhere today. Veena did a hit movie Mohabbatan Sacchiyan and also did some shows. Mostly she used to be in news for her affairs and little controversies but her stint in Big Boss and limited work she did in Bollywood gave her world-wide recognition. If not for Bollywood she would never have got this immense popularity.

Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan:

Its Bread v/s Dignity!

Well I personally think they were bigger stars even before going to Bollywood but Bollywood did wonders for them. Mahira is seen mostly talking about Raees in all shows in place of her work in Pakistan and she would as debut opposite SRK is not a small thing. This provided her international exposure. Same is the case for Fawad, even Indians started counting him as the fourth Khan of Bollywood. Not to forget an increase in demanded fee come with success in Bollywood.

Yes there are many stars who have achieved a lot of success without going to Bollywood like Shaan Shahid, Reema, Mehwish Hayat, Hamza Ali Abbasi, Shehryar Munawar and many more but there is no denying to the fact that going to Bollywood is like having a success stamp on your CV. Whenever anything bad happens in India, Indian stars and awaam start bashing and accusing Pakistan mercilessly without any proof and there is never any answer from our stars. The way Fawad and Mahira were stopped to work in Bollywood and none of the the Pakistanis were allowed to do promotions in India recently shows how much love they hold for us. The way Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was treated on the tax thing on airport and Atif had to cancel his concert once are not hidden from the audience either. But our stars are always seen speaking about the love and support they get in India despite how much humiliation they themselves or their country is facing. They will never utter a word against them even if it is a fact. This is all because its bread v/s dignity and bread is always the winning contender. Whatever anyone may say it remains a fact that going Bollywood can place a lot of jam and nutella on one’s bread. Share your thoughts about our stars working there and never defending themselves or their country and what do you think of audience giving more love to stars who go to Bollywood?

Its All Love Between Pakistani And Indian Manto

0

Manto was a film that showed everyone again why Sarmad Khoosat is loved for his craft. Directing the Manto and being Manto at the same time was a task he did with complete authenticity and class. The film was a piece of art and people fell in love with it left and right. This year another Manto came out and it was Bollywood’s take on Manto with Nandita Das in the director’s chair and Nawazuddin Siddiqui being the Manto. This version too has gotten a lot of critical acclaims and people have loved it.

People, however, were comparing the two and Nandita Das came out to speak about it. She said that she wants both the versions to get love and does not want it to become Indian vs Pakistani Manto as she tagged Sarad Khoosat and said that she thinks he agrees with it too.

Its All Love Between Pakistani And Indian Manto

Sarmad whose love for art is not hidden from anyone replied back and said that he will be watching the Manto too:

Its All Love Between Pakistani And Indian Manto

Both the films have impressed audiences and showed parts of Manto’s different phases!

Its “We Too” After “Me Too”!

The world was shaken after many of the A-list celebrities came out with accusations of sexual harassment against a renowned producer. Since then many cases have come out at different places with many women voicing their stories. The movement reached Pakistan when Meesha Shafi accused Ali Zafar of sexual harassment. Both the stars are engaged in a legal battle right now. A male model Mujahid took to Instagram as he also has spoken about facing similar issues while using the hashtags me too and we too. He explained how male models are also facing the same dilemma. This is his post as he explained the whole situation clearly:

Its "We Too" After "Me Too"!

Its "We Too" After "Me Too"!

Its "We Too" After "Me Too"!

Its "We Too" After "Me Too"!

After Mujahid came out with his story, Meesha Shafi also asked her friends from the designer community that if this is the reason for them not supporting her at this time:

Its "We Too" After "Me Too"!

We hope we as a nation can get to a point where we can stop this practice and empower the victims!

Item Songs in Pakistani Films, But why?

Pakistani films have come a long way but there are still certain aspects of our film which are disappointing. Item numbers are one such aspect which was borrowed from Bollywood films. The question is that why are the these item songs part of Pakistani films and whether they are needed or not!

Here is a video discussing the trend and answering whether these item numbers are even needed in Pakistani films.

It’s Time To Move On

Humsafar’s 6th anniversary was celebrated in September last year and I am all for it because It deserves to be celebrated. It was ‘Humsafar’ that gave Pakistani Drama Industry a Global identity but what happened after that is disastrous. Indeed it is and I can prove that. Pakistan currently has 20+ entertainment TV channels and These Channels collectively air 550+ Dramas per year. After December 2011, Almost all dramas aired on these 20+ Channels were about forced marriages or Saas/Bahu Sagas. Disastrous! Hence proved.

It's Time To Move On

Before launch of all these channels Pakistan used to have only one Entertainment channel named PTV. With limited resources and actors PTV explored all the Genres available. Have you forgotten those Horror shows like, December- Darwaza Khula Rakhna-Haqeeqat? Political Dramas? Thrillers? Sadly in today’s age of VFX,technology and acceptance where acting is no more a taboo in Pakistan we’re reduced to Saas-Bahu and Rishtay Wali aunties. C’mon let me take to a tour of what Pakistani Drama Industry can be:
It's Time To Move On
1- Action:

Why aren’t we making dramas on Army/ ISI/ Airforce/ Navy/ why? We have great directors like Sarmad Khoosat and great actors like Hamza, Maya, Fawad, Humaima, Mahira. Who would look amazing with guns and kicking some asses here and there?

2- Fantasy:

Ainak Wala Jin, anyone? C’mon Pakistani creatives show us your VFX skills and costume designing skills. You have some amazing writers why can’t you write some amazing Fantasy dramas?

3- Comedy:

Oh please! Forget Bulbulay and Dugdugi. We want some dark comedy so we can enjoy it and get something from it. Please note dark comedy doesn’t mean absurd comedy.

4- Mystery:

Des Pardes, Irtika, Masuri? Like that. I know many of you are smiling remembering these masterpieces. :) We have all kinds of mysteries in Pakistan now all you need is to mix them into your writing and make a magic potion to give us a quality entertainment.

5- History:

Masuri again comes under this heading and so do Dastaan & Mor Mahal (Great try in recent times) But why can’t we try others. We all enjoyed Jodha Akbar and Bajirao Mastaani but why it has to be from India if we have to enjoy it?

It's Time To Move On

6- Horror:

We all believe in Jins,Bhoot, Rooh! Now don’t we? Oh we do! But we will only watch paranormal activity and praise it. Par Hum Tv pe ManMayal hi acha lagta hai! least said the best.

7- Political:

Mera Saeein. Now we all loved it. Didn’t we? except for the part where it was made a show that showed only women being tortured and men were shown only as sex predators. No one is that one dimensional. But great try and it worked too. We had a Season 2 of it as well. Remember?

8- Slice of Life:

Remember the days we used to have dramas inspired from real life incidents? and in recent time we had Sadqay Tumharay, yes it was a love story but it was much much more than that. A controversial story of a society and It worked with the audience.

It's Time To Move On

9- Crime:

All types of Crimes are happening in Pakistan. don’t glorify it but just have  new ideas to write and make people aware while entertaining them. I know Postcards are for messages and Tv is for entertainment but Crime drama can be much much more entertaining than we think. Udaari? recent example.

10- Romance:

It’s a genre. Treat it as one. Keep it as one. Don’t make it wholesome TV, please.

I beg of you writers to fetch your pens and Directors to roll your cameras and make something good to watch.

Thank you.

Azhar

It’s Raining Best Friends In The Entertainment Industry

It seems like a fairy godmother has waved a magic wand in our entertainment industry. Everyone is getting so well that it’s really a big surprise to see any such thing. It is said that it is easier to make foes in Showbiz than friends. We have been seeing that too. Actresses even a lot of times actor seem to rub each other the wrong way. But, it looks like our industry is an exception or maybe it is just too small as of now for the actors to put their egos before anything else.

It's Raining Best Friends In The Entertainment Industry

Earlier we reported that Zara Noor Abbas and Maya Ali are bonding very well on the sets of Paray Hut Love and then we saw Ushna Shah and Ayesha Omer spend some quality time together. Now, guess who has befriended who? It’s our very own Sajal Ali. Yeah, she is a good friend of Ahad but then who said she can’t have a girl bestie. Well, seems like Sajal has found a best friend in none other than Mira Sethi. Mira comes across as a very fun talkative person in the interviews and we totally understand how much Sajal must be enjoying her company.

It's Raining Best Friends In The Entertainment Industry

Recently, their cute video has surfaced where Mira held Sajal in her arms like a baby and nothing could get cuter than that. We are just so happy for these girls for loving each other and having great fun.

It’s not impossible to have our own individual style, says Abbas Ali Khan

0

Abbas Ali Khan thinks that we need to stop getting influenced from Bollywood.

He told Something Haute at the trailer launch of Chalay Thay Saath:

“It’s not impossible to have our own individual style.”

Abbas has created the musical score for CTS and it sounds like he has done a great job.

“I wanted the music to sound Pakistani so we made sure to use instruments that are used in Pakistan. For example, since the film has been shot in Hunza, we used instruments such as the rubab. We have also incorporated traditional Chinese instruments specially made in China, as some of the film is shot in China. What’s interesting is that the raag of Pakistan’s mountainous regions is very similar to the raag used in China. It’s beautiful how the two sounds came together.”

It seems like Abbas put  lot of planning in order to come up with a great musical score.

“Nowadays film music sounds too similar to Bollywood music. I love Bollywood and I regularly watch their films, but we need to get out from under their shadow and create something that’s ours.”

“Mooroo is a perfect example of original Pakistani pop music. He has a unique sound; his music doesn’t sound like Bollywood or Hollywood or anything else we’ve heard lately.”

Abbas also talked about ‘Chitta Chola’, the song he worked on for Patari Tabeer:

“When I first heard the song, I started working on the music using traditional instruments like the tabla and the dholak. But that was creating a sound that has been done to death now. So I decided to go down a completely different route. That’s why the music is very electronic and it falls under dream pop, a new music genre. I’m really thankful to Patari that they trusted me and gave me a chance to experiment.”

It’s Diyar-e-Dil vs Mumkin this Tuesday!

0

Hum TV and ARY Digital are welcoming two new dramas, Diyar-e-Dil and Mumkin, this Tuesday at 8:00 pm. Both the shows deal with relationships, but the former just might win over the latter. Here’s why:

1. The cast:

Diyar-e-Dil, with Abid Ali, Mikal Zulfiqar, Sanam Saeed, Maya Ali and Osman Khalid Butt has a stellar cast which the viewers can’t wait to see together.  Osman Khalid Butt’s Goya has been praised by reviewers and Sanam Saeed’s fans are excited to watch her on-screen once again.

11054286_452600481562029_5219995459482793845_n

Mumkin has seasoned actors like Sajid Hassan and Irsa Ghazal, but the other members of the cast, Junaid Khan, Sarah Khan and Sadia Faisal have yet to impress. Junaid Khan has played the disappointing husband for a long time, and Sarah Khan has mostly done the role of a bechari larki (Hum’s Alvida is an exception). Asad Siddiqui and Yasir Mazhar are also included in the cast.

2. The promos and story:

Since Diyar-e-Dil is based on Farhat Ishtiaq’s propular novel,  fans are impatiently waiting for it to hit their screens. There are many characters and the story spans over three generations. It involves beautifully woven tracks. The promos do not spoil the fun for the audience. Thus, they give drama buffs something exciting to look forward to.

Mumkin has been written by Sarwat Nazeer. It is the story of a girl (Sarah Khan) from a broken family, who feels her father’s absence in her life, despite having undivided attention and unconditional love from her mother. The hero (Junaid Khan) is from the upper class, and is her best friend’s devar. Their love story will face hurdles not only from his mother but also from the heroine’s cousin, who is interested in her.

3. The locations:

While Mumkin has been shot is Karachi, Diyar-e-Dil has been shot in Skardu. The locations are beautiful, fresh  and the promos say it all!

10339715_971055159589205_1810417158843584752_n

Diyar-e-Dil is a clear winner, but it’s all a matter of execution now. The director of the former is Furqan Khan, whose great projects include Roag, Sabz Pari Lal Kabootar, Mera Saaein, Mein Chaand Si. Diyar-e-Dil’s director is Haseeb Hassan who has directed shows like Tum Ho Ke Chup and Bol Meri Machli. Which director will nail it? Let’s find out on Tuesday.

It’s a wrap!

Lahore Say Aagay (the spin off of Karachi Say Lahore)’s shooting successfully came to a close and it will be released across Pakistani cinemas in November 2016.

In an interview with Dawn Images, Yasir Hussain shared a bit about his experience and spoke highly of his co-star, Saba Qamar . “It was a great experience working with Saba Qamar because she is such a thorough professional. There’s so much I learned from her. She’s undoubtedly a brilliant actress but she is miles ahead of everyone else in professionalism.”

IMG_20160604_230459

“I’d get tired on a outdoors shoot (which was 80% of the time) or while travelling between Lahore and Swat and Lahore and Islamabad. It was quite grueling and hectic. We were injured many times, sometime we fell and suffered cuts. But that woman didn’t budge.”

According to Yasir Hussain, this movie is even better than the first one. ”This film is better than the first one, especially the script.”

The talented actor shared his future plans. “Next year, I’m doing another film Senti Aur Mental with Yasra Rizvi and another in India that I can’t talk about right now. The shooting will be in Mumbai and I’ll be flying there next week. (armodexperiment.com) ”

Here are a few pictures from the wrap-up party:

It’s A Call of Duty To Make Patriotic Movies

0

Our Superstar Shaan Shahid as always stood up and urged directors that start making films in reply to Indian propaganda films, after the released trailer of Bard of Blood. It is not for the first time that he asked about making films against India, he has been most vocal about Indian boycott.
He has said that all the directors must make patriotic movies. No one can walk away from his/her own story and Pakistan is our story, we need to talk about it.

IMG 20190829 060845

He has  worked in many patriotic movies like waar, operation 021, and Zarar is about to release soon as its trailer is expected.

He has tweeted that

“#2allthedirectors of pk #films No man can walkout from his own story. our story is Pakistan. take your stand #defending the cultural borders of 🇵🇰. Art has no boundaries , yet they strike through art .#bardofblood Our call of duty has started #makefilms defending the truth.🇵🇰♥️ ”

IMG 20190829 060631
He said it’s a call of duty after Bard of Blood that all the directors join this race of patriotic films and stand up to defend our cultural borders. He said that Art has no boundaries yet they strike through art, they spread hate and rage through art which is poisonous.
IMG 20190829 060836

We think that it is the right time movies like,
Perwaz hay junoon
Sherdil
Waar
Saya e Khudaya e zuljalal
Operation 021
should be produced.

Good news is that finally we are making film on Abhinandan and that too written by Khalil ul Rehman Qamar , a strong movie is expected.

We like Shaan Shahid urge producers to please start making patriotic films.

It was very painful for me to leave Pakistan, shares Shabnam

0

Shabman, the senior actress who was the poster girl of Lollywood in the 1970s broke into tears while she talked about leaving Pakistani and its film industry in the late 1990s.

“It was very painful for me but I did it for my family, especially my father, who suffered from a heart attack in Bangladesh while I was in Pakistan,” said the film star at the literary festival organised by Old Ravians Union (ORU) at Government College University (GCU), Lahore.

Shabnam had a whole session dedicated to her named: ‘An interaction with Shabnam Ghosh’.

“I lived and worked for almost three decades in Pakistan, how could I forget the people who gave me so much love and respect,” said she.

When she was asked about the Bangladeshi cinema, she said:

“It is in the same condition as Pakistani cinema nowadays.”

She said the actors were not very demanding when she worked in the film industry, adding that “they were no concept of five-star hotels as they used to stay in tents most of the time during outdoor shooting.”

She also mentioned that her husband, music director Robin Ghosh was very supportive and understanding of her film life and never asked questions when she came home late from work.

The festival opened with a session which paid glowing tributes to Bano Qudisa. Poet Yasmeen Hameed, Anees Ahmed, the son of Bano Qudsia, Prof Dr Saadat Saeed and Dr Khalid Sinjarni talked about the late writer.

It Took Nine Years But Aaroh Is Back With A Bang

Ain’t no 90’s kid who doesn’t remember Aaroh’s love odyssey ‘Na Kaho’ back from 2003 but then again all good things end soon and so did Aaroh.

Aaroh disbanded in 2009 concentrating on their personal projects. Farooq Ahmed, vocalist and Haider Hashmi, lead guitarist, went on to pursue a career as solo musicians, while bassist Khalid Khan went on performing as a session player for the band Fuzön.

It Took Nine Years But Aaroh Is Back With A Bang

Aaroh released a new single Mera Pyar in 2013. There were plans on working on an album as well.

Haider Hashmi passed away in 2014 due to brain tumor which led to Aaroh disbanding and plans for the album being cancelled. In 2016 Nescafe Basement paid a tribute to the late guitarist in the seventh episode of the fourth season of the show.

It Took Nine Years But Aaroh Is Back With A Bang

But the Aaroh fans had a fangirl moment when earlier this year the band came together in Pepsi Battle of the Bands and performed the forever green Na Kaho and Rang Neela.

This year has been good to the Aaroh fan base because the band is back together and this time bringing back to life Habib Jalib’s ‘Mein Nahi Manta’ and with its original vocalist Farooq Ahmed. With Khalid Khan on bass, Jason Anthony on drums and Asad ul Hafeez on lead guitar

In a recent interview Farooq revealed that the band had never planned to come back together, but the response they got from fans when they performed at Pepsi Battle of the Bands was huge.

He said,

“While performing, we realised that working together is amazing and that the chemistry was still there so we thought of giving it a shot.”

He also added,

“Even other musicians from the industry were happy that we’re back and releasing a new song. They were equally excited.”

When asked why he thought this song was so important as a comeback, Farooq stated,

“I live in the US but I follow Pakistani politics to the core, so I know whatever is happening in the country. Khalid told me about Habib Jalib, who was a revolutionary writer and we thought of using his words for this song because they fit so perfectly.”

It Took Nine Years But Aaroh Is Back With A Bang

He further explained,

“After releasing this song, some people from the industry complained that we were only focusing on the negativity in the country. But I believe that even as musicians, we are affected by what’s going on around us and feel that we should voice our opinion as well. Aaroh is known for its love songs, but we also have a responsibility to make such things known. Hopefully, this will bring some change in the society which is why we felt that it was the right time to come back, especially with Mein Nahi Manta.”

It Took Nine Years But Aaroh Is Back With A Bang

Speaking of the possibility of a new album, Farooq said,

“As of now, I can’t personally commit to releasing an album, but we are working on a few songs that we plan to release soon.”

If any of the Aaroh guys are reading this I’m gonna voice every Aaroh fan’s heart here and say that we deserve a new album Pakistan deserves better music and we love us some Aaroh. Make a new album already.

“With everything that has happened in the past, I don’t think any girl would want to go back to that. I have made up my mind and don’t want to repeat my mistakes. It is my final decision not to get married ever again.”

It is my final decision not to get married ever again--- Noor Bukhari

Noor added,

“It hurts me to see people making such rumours up about me though. I don’t understand why everyone thinks it is okay to target me. There are many other unmarried showbiz personalities but I don’t see anyone speaking about their marriage…”

“I have decided never to go back to showbiz and neither to marry. Instead, I am looking to join a religious programme once I get a suitable offer. I am very happy being unmarried and am content in adopting religion in this life.”

It Is Allama Iqbal’s 141st Birth Anniversary

0

Allama Muhammad Iqbal is a visionary and philosopher. He is the one who made Pakistan a possibility when he put forward the idea of a separate Muslim country for the Muslims of Sub-continent. Allama Iqbal was born on 9th November 1877. It was not the birth of an individual, it was actually the birth of an era, a dream that became a reality after so many hardships.

Allama Iqbal used the power of his pen and woke the Muslims of the sub-continent. His words, his philosophies and teachings are still very much relevant and they teach us tolerance, determination and Khudi to do good for everyone. On the occasion of the birthday of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, our celebrities also wished the fellow Pakistanis on Iqbal day. Here are some of the messages they had to give to their fans:

It Is Allama Iqbal's 141st Birth Anniversary It Is Allama Iqbal's 141st Birth Anniversary It Is Allama Iqbal's 141st Birth Anniversary

A Happy Iqbal Day from us to all the fellow Pakistanis. We hope that Iqbal day is not a holiday now, it is a day when we all Pakistanis will strive for a better Pakistan, a Pakistan Iqbal would have wanted to see from us!

It Is A Taboo Till It Happens!

We as a nation just have the feelings of disgust, shame and rage inside us right now. It is not wrong to say that we as a society have failed to provide protection to our children and justice to the victims. The murder of innocent Zainab shook the whole nation and all of a sudden the only voice in every social circle was “Justice For Zainab”.

It Is A Taboo Till It Happens!

Pakistan is not a country where you can impart sex education or even talk about it. It is such a taboo that now when the circumstances are so outrageous and the environment is so dangerous still if your kids come up and ask you “why Zainab was killed?”, you would still try to avoid the answer. Media is a strong influence on the society. It silently shapes our thoughts and influences us even if we do not realize it. So it can naturally help in imparting awareness about the issues prevailing in society and help change our attitudes towards the victims. But what happens when someone actually tries to talk about it? What happened to Udaari? A drama which bared the true face of society in front of us and showed how such criminals get away with their shameful acts because of strong relations with the system of justice. But were we able to digest the reality shown in fiction easily? NO! We had people who thought it was inappropriate to show an imaginary situation where a little girl was being raped. But we can see the videos and pictures of distorted bodies of young children in reality because that is somehow not inappropriate???

It Is A Taboo Till It Happens!

Verna is another project which showed how the system is the one actually protecting the culprit. Despite all its weaknesses, it also showed how we react to a victim who is raped. We try to blame them in some way. Media has shown some concern and we have seen few projects coming out which talked about it. But are they enough? First and foremost, if anyone thinks of making something on a subject other than marriage problems, sister rivalry and the ultimate and biggest problem in Pakistan; shadi ke pehle saal bacha na hona, we ban them. We think it is not appropriate for children to see these things or talk about them. What follows is Mann Mayal and Main Maa Nahin Banna Chahti. Because the society accepts them.

It Is A Taboo Till It Happens!

Maalik also portrayed some bitter realities of our system and yes it also got the Pakistani equivalent of Oscars- A BAN! We never ask why are these things being banned? And after the ban is lifted, we go out of curiosity to find those “masalaydaar scenes” which caused the bans. The whole community has woken up for the little Zainab and this lack of sleepiness may last few days. Why we slept after more than 300 children were molested in this same city and their criminals are openly wandering now. We shut our channels then because it was inappropriate to show such things to our children. But I hope this time the realization lasts longer. It is time we show the reality on our media without the hanging swords of bans and talk to our children about it, talk to them before it is too late.

We all know our kids know about stuff they should not know even if we do not accept it, so better off teach them about the deteriorating behaviours of the society too and teach them how to protect themselves. We are a nation where 15 and 16-year-olds are married off and we ask them about having children the first day after marriage. So it will not be wrong if you will start educating your children about abuse. Prevention is better than cure and in cases like ours when the cure is not even available, prevention is the only way. Yes, talking and explaining such things to your children is difficult but it only remains a taboo till it happens to anyone. It is always better safe than sorry. We have to play our roles, be it the media or public because no one wants a Zainab again.

May Allah keep our children safe and may justice be granted to Zainab!

Issue Based Pakistani Dramas of 2020

Every year, the Pakistani drama industry produces a lot of dramas. Where some dramas are made purely for the sake of entertainment, there are also a few which are created in order to spread awareness among the masses. The makers of such dramas usually take pride in the fact that they have not only understood their responsibility but have also played their part in putting the tool of media to good use. As much as this approach is appreciated, it becomes unfortunate that the Pakistani drama producers and makers can not break free from the race of ratings and competition.

There have been a lot of instances where the viewers are given false hopes by promoting dramas to be dealing with a certain social issue but when the story progresses, viewers are left feeling disappointed because it is written in the most typical fashion with all those twists and turns which not only veer away from the subject but also do not really do justice to it. A lot of times, many dramas in the past also promised to be shedding light on social issues in all its entirety but that didn’t turn out to be the case.

This year, Pakistani drama viewers also came across a few such projects which did promise to create awareness about a certain social issue but ended up being a bit too commercial or poorly executed. It is because of this reason, such kinds of dramas fail to garner a lot of viewership because the execution errors along with derailed storylines fail to keep the interest of the viewers alive. Some dramas this year did become popular but as the story progressed, it forced the viewers to speak about the wrong approach of the drama makers. However, Pakistani drama viewers did get lucky at times, because they also got to witness very few dramas which actually did justice to the social issue picked up by the drama makers because they approached the subject with clarity and vision.

Here is the list of social issue-based dramas seen in 2020:

Dar Khuda Se

Writer: Sarwat Nazeer
Director: Anjum Shehzad
Producer: 7th Sky Entertainment
Channel: Geo Entertainment
Cast: Imran Abbas, Sana Javed, Kiran Haq, Saleem Mairaj, Maryam Mirza, and others.

Drama serial Dar Khuda Se revolved around the subject of workplace harassment that young girls and employees of big companies have to face on a daily basis. Dar Khuda Se had all the potential to be a very strong drama because initially it garnered a lot of viewership and also had a somewhat different storyline but unfortunately, people failed to keep up with it because the drama was never-ending. Dar Khuda Se had a total of 42 episodes, which made the pace of the drama a bit too slow and tested the patience of the viewers along the way. The story revolved around Afreen (Sana Javed) who was harassed by her boss Shahvaiz, a character played by Imran Abbas. After a long time, Imran Abbas played a negative character. Although all the actors did the best they could, this drama had a very typical setting which took away the focus from the workplace harassment, and then a major chunk of the story was dedicated to the helpless parents of Afreen who were just disappointed at most of their children and the paths they chose for themselves.

Eventually, the story of Dar Khuda Se became about Tamkeen, a divorcee who just dreamt of living big. She marries Shahvaiz and is put through abuse on a daily basis. In the end, Shahvaiz meets a typical end and Afreen finds a way out out of her miseries too. If the drama makers had dealt with this subject properly and had subtracted the number of episodes, Dar Khuda Se would have been one of the best dramas witnessed by the viewers. It was unfortunate that despite having a strong theme and idea in mind, the writer ended up adding a bit too many tracks, and then the director gave preference to the supporting tracks a lot more which took away from the actual subject of the drama.

Issue Based Pakistani Dramas of 2020

Damsa

Writer: Asma Nabeel
Director: Najaf Bilgirami
Producer: Showcase Productions
Channel: ARY Digital
Cast: Nadia Jamil, Shahood Alvi, Moomal Sheikh, Emaan Khan, and others.

Drama serial Damsa was another social issue-based serial that Pakistani drama viewers came across. The story of Damsa was based on the theme of child abduction, trafficking, and begging. The drama raised some very important points and was skillfully written, shedding light on some of the very sensitive subjects which are not explored on the TV screens. However, Damsa failed to do well in terms of viewership and popularity because it was not easily available to be viewed on YouTube and also because the theme of the drama was so grim and serious that it made it hard for the people to follow it.

Nadia Jamil’s association with this project also gave it a lot of hype. There is however no denying the fact that Damsa was well written and showed how strong-willed a mother can be when she puts her mind to anything related to her children. The character of Areeja, played by Nadia Jamil took the central stage and showcased the struggles and obstacles a mother has to face in order to rescue her child. The drama serial Damsa did have a positive ending which compensated a great deal for the pain and suffering that was shown throughout the drama. It won’t be wrong to say that drama serial Damsa was the only social issue-based drama this year that actually stayed true to the promise made to the audience and it delivered.

Issue Based Pakistani Dramas of 2020

Ghalati

Writer: Asma Sayani
Director: Saba Hameed
Producer: Six Sigma Plus
Channel: ARY Digital
Cast: Hira Mani, Affan Waheed, Saba Hameed, Sana Askari, Anoushay Ashraf, Faris Shafi, Meherbano, and others.

Ghalati was another brilliant social-issue based drama this year that did well, not only in terms of viewership but also in terms of conveying the message as well as staying true to the essence of the story. Drama serial Ghalati was about the newly wedded couple of Zaira and Saad, where Zaira has an upper hand and when her father suffers from financial losses in the business, he is unable to bear the financial responsibility and burden of Saad’s family. That’s what makes their relationship rocky because Saad’s mother fails to let her son settle peacefully with Zaira. This drama serial sensitively dealt with the issue related to divorce, especially when it is given at different intervals. Saad refuses to admit that he has divorced Zaira twice, which makes Zaira a culprit.

In this drama, the character of Shanzay was one of the best seen this year. Shanzay, played by Meherbano was all about honesty and saying things for what they are. Shanzay ends up helping Zaira come out of the messy situation and in the end, Zaira takes charge of her life by putting her harrowing past behind her. Drama serial Ghalati was in a true sense based on empowering women and showing them the brighter side of life that divorce does not mean an end, it definitely can be a stepping stone for something bigger and better. This drama was directed by Saba Hameed and she executed it with a vision and a perfect approach, this is why Ghalati didn’t drag and ended at the right time.

Issue Based Pakistani Dramas of 2020

Ruswai

Writer: Naila Ansari
Director: Rubina Ashraf
Producer: Six Sigma Plus
Channel: ARY Digital
Main Cast: Sana Javed, Mikaal Zulfiqar, Seemi Raheel, Syed Mohmmad Ahmed, Irsa Ghazal, Usman Peerzada, Osama Tahir, Minna Tariq.

Most of the issue-based dramas in 2020 did not get a lot of attention. Ruswai was perhaps the only such drama that was watched by many and it was the center of discussions as well. Ruswai was the story of a rape survivor. Through this track, the writer highlighted the plight of the victims and tried to show how even the closest family members can have the most unrealistic expectations from the victims. This was perhaps the only drama that also focused a great deal on the internal struggle of the victim. Sana Javed played the main role in the drama. Her character was etched-out in such a way that it gave people so much to ponder upon. The only issue which most people had with Ruswai was that the side tracks at one point started getting more attention than the central story. The writer then clarified that the drama was also written with the intent of pointing out the problems that occur due to the tradition of watta-satta in society.

The biggest strength of Ruswai was its characters and the fact that it had a strong female protagonist who fought for herself right till the end. Even the supporting characters such as the ones played by Osama Tahir and Minna Tariq also got a great deal of attention and love from the public. There was also a big controversy surrounding the drama. In an interview, certain remarks made by the lead actress Sana Javed implied that Rubina Ashraf, the director of the play, chose to give more screen time to her daughter Minna Tariq. Rubina Ashraf said that these were false accusations since the writer had already penned down the script and she couldn’t possibly give her daughter more screen time. While Sana’s performance and character in Ruswai were superb, this statement made by her gave the drama the kind of attention that was not needed. Ruswai was however the only issue-based drama this year that made it to our best dramas list of 2020 for raising vital issues and for the most part, it did so with precision.

Issue Based Pakistani Dramas of 2020

Bikhray Moti

Writer: Edison Idrees Masih
Director: Shahid Shafaat
Producer: Six Sigma Plus & Next Level Entertainment
Channel: ARY Digital
Main Cast: Yasir Nawaz, Neelam Muneer, Wahaj Ali, Nausheen Shah, Samina Ahmed, Waseem Abbas, Rashid Farooqui, Mukhtar Shehzad, Fareeda Shabir, Tasneem Ansari, Damisha Wali, Anas Yaseen, Hazik Wali.

There are only a handful of Pakistani dramas that have dealt with issues concerning children. It was promising watching such a drama this year especially because it was backed by two of the biggest production houses in the country. This basically goes to show that Pakistani producers are finally investing in such dramas. Bikhray Moti focused on many different aspects of child abuse which included showing how children are affected by the environment in their house to highlighting the evil of child marriages and child labor. Apart from that, it also showed the role of a father in the family and how it impacts the children whether they are young or grown-up daughters who have to put up with abuse. It can be safely stated that the makers of this drama had all the best intentions and we truly appreciate that since this drama was a step in the right direction. However, the fact is that the script lacked the kind of appeal which was needed to make the viewers tune into and look forward to the drama. That is why even though this drama raised so many important issues, Bikhray Moti never made waves.

The characters in the drama were etched-out poorly and the pace of the drama was too slow at first. The strongest character in the drama Aiza took the longest time to come into its own. The dialogues and situations were not as impactful, especially in the first half. The writer Edison Idrees has the tendency of sticking to the basic theme and delivering what is asked of him without adding that extra something that makes a drama entertaining or attention-grabbing. When people tune into such dramas, they do not just want information, they also need the kind of momentum and characters which will make such stories more engaging. Even a documentary needs such substance to keep the viewers hooked to them. We hope that the next time these production houses decided to make more issue-based dramas they ask someone like Bee Gul, Faiza Iftikhar, or Amna Mufti to pen down the script.

Issue Based Pakistani Dramas of 2020

Saraab

Writer: Edison Idrees Masih
Director: Mohsin Talat
Producer: Moomal Entertainment & MD Productions
Channel: HUM
Main Cast: Sami Khan, Sonya Hussain, Aurangzeb Laghari, Farida Shabbir, Ghana Ali, Nazish Jehangir, Sajid Shah.

Saraab was another Pakistani drama of 2020 that was promoted as an issue-based drama. There are few Pakistani dramas that have attempted to address mental health issues and Saraab was one of them. Saraab’s main purpose was to make people understand Schizophrenia. The story centered on a young Schizophrenic female who is widely misunderstood by her family. This was definitely a risky topic to counter in a drama and as far as the signs and symptoms of the disease were concerned, the writer managed to tick all the boxes. Sonya Hussyn’s remarkable performance also grabbed the attention of the viewers. This was however another drama written by Edison Idrees that lacked clarity. The family politics was done-to-death and clichéd to the core which was another disappointment. Why add sibling rivalry and family politics in a drama which promises to be different?

Not only this, the characters and the situations at times were so boring that it was difficult sitting through the drama. Some of the scenes were stretched and were repetitive as well which affected the entertainment value of Saraab. Even though Saraab had a star cast but it lacked the kind of content which could have given the viewers a reason to tune into it every week. Also, Sonya Hussyn’s statement about Autism being a symptom of Schizophrenia basically showed that the actress had not really done her homework right! Even then she did what was expected from her with precision but it definitely impacted the seriousness with which the viewers watched the drama. At the end of the day, Saraab did not have a must-watch factor and was mostly the kind of drama you don’t even want to tune into.

Issue Based Pakistani Dramas of 2020

Most of these dramas were made with the best of intentions but they lacked the kind of grip which was much-needed to make these dramas a success. Some of them fit the bill, others completely failed. We would like to request the producers to ensure that the issue-based dramas are just as well written as some of the other dramas which are produced by these big production houses. We feel that the Pakistani entertainment industry has many gifted writers who can highlight these issues in a better manner. What do you think? Share your views.

My life was going well—yes, there were adjustment problems—but it went smoothly until I was 23, after which my husband opted for a second marriage. At that time, everything fell apart. I tried not to react, but that became my weakness. It was my decision to be strong and after which people thought that I am heartless but only Allah knows”

The most important thing is education, which brings awareness into girls’ lives. We don’t need education just for jobs; we need it for life”

Talking about it he said,”I have been listening a lot about Barzakh. Generally, I don’t talk about Indian dramas but in the case of Barzakh, Pakistani artists are acting in it and it has been written and directed by a Pakistani and the series has been shot in Pakistan too. Barzakh is openly promoting obscenity and the big scenes which are forbidden in Islam. It seems that our Pakistani artists have now become so eager to be part of this obscene culture and they are exploding with such content and want to narrate stories like Barzakh. It features all the vulgar plots in it and you have been watching it because it has been shot in scenic locations of Pakistan. Well, they also named it Barzakh which means the period between death and the day of judgment”

Raja Zia Ul Haq further said that he won’t go into the conspiracy theories regarding Barzakh but the Alphabet A which has been used in their poster is written like an illuminate sign. He said , “The font of Barzakh’s letter A is also like a free mason’s sign, about which I will talk later, in detail. Apart from this, making such a content is like to be part of a sin which will never fade, don’t be part of this ‘Gunah E Jaria’. I feel sad for the actors who have become part of this specific project. I also condemn the actors who are openly supporting it. Please beware of such content and don’t be part of it. Stop watching such content and also raise voice against it”. Have a look at the video where he pointed it out:

Islamabad United Manager’s Cricket Themed Wedding

0

Weddings and Cricket are the most saleable things in Pakistan. Now imagine what their combination would be like? Pakistani people’s hearts beat with cricket and wedding is the sole purpose of people’s life in Pakistan. Jokes apart, we actually came across a wonderful combination of cricket and wedding of late.

Islamabad United Manager's Cricket Themed Wedding

Islamabad United are an ace team in the PSL. They have won the game more than any other game and their kit is something we love to wear. But that’s not all that this team is good at. Their manager, since he is managing a cricket team must be a cricket aficionado, too his love for the game to another level. The General Manager of Islamabad United had a theme-based wedding and it was awesome. Starting new innings of his life, Rehan ul Haq, the team manager of 2 times PSL winner, had a big fat wedding last night that brought together the whole Islamabad United squad, with the exception of few, and the gentlemen were dressed up in red, the theme of their team kit!

Mohammad Irfan, Shadab Khan, Rumman Raees, Hussain Talat and others attended the wedding.

This may not have been the most high profile wedding but it certainly was the coolest wedding.
