Pakistani cinema though is on the road to revival, the film industry will not be able to reach its full potential till we allow the products made to release and let the audience be the judge of what they want to watch and what they want to boycott. Our films go through strong scrutiny and many films get banned even without a serious reason given by the censor board. Javed Iqbal is one such movie that has suffered senseless banning without a valid reason.
Javed Iqbal is written and directed by Abu Aleeha. The film stars Yasir Husain, Ayesha Omar, Rabya Kulsoom and many others and it has received rave reviews and awards at different film festivals. Javed Iqbal is based on the life story of a serial killer who molested, killed and dissolved the bodies of 100 boys and he never got caught but actually surrendered to the police himself.
The film has been hanging without a release for months and now it is all set to release on 19th May 2023. A few scenes have been censored and the film has been renamed as Kukri resulting in finally bringing the film to the cinemas.

Javed Akhtar is a celebrated Indian writer and lyricist. He is the name behind films like Deewar and Sholay. He has also visited Pakistan several times and became a part of events like the Faiz Festival. He has largely received respect from Pakistan and the Pakistani artists.

After tuning into Jannat Se Aagay initially when it went on air and not warming up to it, I decided to revisit this drama now that it has been on air for 12 weeks. I must say that Jannat Se Aagay has pleasantly surprised me with its intriguing and unexpected plot developments. As the story progressed, the true purpose and meaning of the drama has been unveiled. The unexpected twists and turns have not only piqued my interest but also added depth and complexity to the storyline.
Core Concept & Themes
The core concept of the drama serial “Jannat Se Aagay” and some of its characters did come across as familiar in the beginning but the unique dynamics these characters share are brand new. The drama so far explores themes such as love, betrayal, ambition, and unmet desires. The writer has handled all these themes intelligently and realistically. It is interesting how the writer has shown “ambition” as both a driving force and a potential source of conflict. Materialism lies at the heart of the narrative; it is a fundamental driving force that significantly shapes the course of both Jannat and Tabbasum’s lives.
The concept of “jannat” in the story is a symbol of an ideal or an unattainable state of being. Tabbasum and Jannat have been presented as personifications of humanity’s relentless quest for perfection. Both these characters have an entirely different approach to achieving this elusive goal. Tabbasum takes Farooq’s unconditional love for granted because she is preoccupied with external markers of success and happiness, such as wealth, possessions, and social status. Tabbasum’s relentless pursuit of materialistic gains is gradually intensifying blurring the line between right and wrong. Through these changes in Tabbasum’s priorities and attitude, the writer has shown what happens when the pursuit of material gains clashes with ethical considerations.
On the other hand, Jannat yearns for the kind of emotional connection and love that Tabbasum overlooks. Jannat recognizes the significance of Farooq’s unconditional love because she is deprived of it. This contrast highlights the themes of the story, such as the true sources of happiness and fulfillment. By showing these dynamics the writer has raised questions about the nature of success and the trade-offs individuals make in their pursuit of happiness.
Another important element of the story revolves around the notion that appearances can be deceptive, both in terms of objects and individuals. This theme shows the stark contrast between Jannat’s public image and her private life, as well as through Tabbasum’s track, which centers on the misconception that material wealth can guarantee happiness. On the surface, Jannat may appear to be the embodiment of success and happiness, with her glamorous public image, wealth, and fame. However, beneath this carefully crafted facade, lies a more complex and vulnerable individual struggling with personal demons.
Tabbasum & Jannat’s Inner Conflicts
The conflicting elements in both these main characters make them more appealing and wholesome. The viewers do not know much about Jannat’s backstory so far except for the fact that she worked hard to attain this financial status. Despite Jannat’s deep-seated yearning for authentic human connections and her discontentment regarding the emotional toll of her current lifestyle, being a status symbol is important to her. It is as if she is trapped in a web of societal expectations and the pressure to maintain a certain image. So far, this aspect of her personality continues to shape her choices and actions, even when they conflict with her innermost desires. This internal conflict has to be the most compelling element of her character development. This character and its journey is a nuanced portrayal of someone torn between the pursuit of societal validation and the pursuit of heartfelt connections.
In the beginning, Tabbasum’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding Jannat ji’s well-being and her protective instinct towards her ‘ideal’ seemed authentic without a doubt. However interestingly enough, beneath this apparent dedication is another side of her personality, one that quietly whispers that she is also entitled to the rewards that Jannat possesses. This internal conflict within Tabbasum makes this character more enigmatic and difficult to predict. This element of her personality sets her apart from the stereotypical depiction of other materialistic leading female character often shown in Pakistani dramas. Also, this duality in her characters leads to moments of tension and ambiguity in the storyline, making her character more relatable. Viewers are often left wondering which aspect of Tabbasum will prevail in any given situation, adding depth and intrigue to her portrayal.
Jannat & Nauman
It would be safe to say that Jannat and Tabbasum take center stage in the narrative. However, both the male leads play an important role in shaping their tracks. Nauman feels that his wife has placed her work and social status above their relationship, leaving him feeling belittled and neglected. After continued failed attempts to share his feelings with his wife, Nauman uses this as an excuse for having an affair. He is an unsupportive husband who harbors jealousy and resentment towards his wife’s rising fame and success. Jannat has definitely contributed to this but she has done so unconsciously. Knowing how their relationship evolved and what their priorities were in the past would provide much-needed context. This context could reveal whether their relationship was different before fame and money came into play.
One notable aspect of Nauman’s character is his seemingly contradictory behavior. On one hand, he resents Jannat’s fame and the attention she receives, but on the other hand, he has no problem enjoying the luxuries and comforts that her success brings. There is a clear lack of communication between Jannat and Nauman. Nauman blames Jannat for this as well. Jannat is willing to work on this marriage but the lack of healthy communication between them makes it impossible to have a decent conversation with her husband. Also, the fact is that Jannat is too caught up in her own world and has actually made Nauman feel unneeded multiple times, subconsciously. This creates a frustrating loop, where her attempts to bridge the gap are met with resistance or frustration from Nauman, further worsening the problem. Nauman’s infidelity has made matters worse and it seems as if this relationship cannot be rescued.
The uneven distribution of domestic responsibilities has also been obvious throughout these episodes. It not only places a considerable strain on Jannat, who constantly juggles the demands of her career with those of managing their home, but it also raises questions about Nauman’s commitment to sharing the responsibilities.
Tabbasum & Farooq
Farooq’s character bears a striking resemblance to Faraz from “Wabaal” in terms of his unwavering love for Tabbasum and his naivety. His affection for Tabbasum knows no bounds, and it serves as the cornerstone of his existence. Just like Faraz from Wabaal, Farooq demonstrates a remarkable capacity to overlook and dismiss all the warning signs and potential pitfalls. His sole objective is to maintain a harmonious and amicable connection with Tabbasum, even if it means turning a blind eye to many of the conflicting interests. Farooq’s strategy will ultimately lead to more significant challenges down the road.
It is obvious that Tabbasum holds a dominant position in this relationship. She also takes Farooq’s unwavering love and commitment for granted. She has grown so used to the sheltered and unreserved affection he provides that she does not fully grasp the value it holds. This lack of awareness coupled with her changing ideals has led to certain complacency, where Tabbasum unconsciously feels that Farooq’s love will forever be there, regardless of her actions. Just like Anum and Faraz from Wabaal, Tabbasum and Farooq’s distinct viewpoints towards life not only shape their relationship at the moment but also introduce a conflicting situation. Tabbasum’s outlook is pragmatic, focusing on practicality and material needs. In contrast, Farooq’s perspective is idealistic, emphasizing the importance of emotional connection above everything else. I am really interested in finding out how this track will unfold in the future.
The Performances
Kubra Khan’s performance as a character who outwardly appears to have all aspects of her life perfectly in order, yet privately grapples with a multitude of personal struggles, has been convincing. Her portrayal draws viewers into the character’s world, inviting empathy for the hidden battles. She has done especially well while translating Jannat’s soft and sensitive side on screen. Kubra Khan’s Urdu accent lacks clarity at times but other than that her performance has been on point. Ramsha Khan’s outstanding performance is unquestionably one of the standout highlights of this drama. What truly sets her performance apart is the captivating air of mystery she weaves into her character. This keeps the viewers wondering about Tabbasum’s actual intentions and her next move. Ramsha has also done exceptionally well portraying Tabbasum’s changed priorities on screen.
Talha Chahour is one of the most promising new talents in the Pakistani television industry, displaying remarkable potential. However, it is disappointing that he appears to be at risk of falling into a typecasting trap. While his performance in this drama is commendable overall, his role and his performance in this drama closely resemble his previous character in Wabaal. There is a sense of familiarity in his character, which, although skillfully executed, leaves me wanting to see him in more diverse and challenging roles that truly showcase his range as an actor.
Saboor Aly and Gohar Rasheed’s performances are decent enough but they do not bring much to the table. Given Gohar Rasheed’s talent and experience, I expect a bit more in terms of emotional resonance. In the ensemble cast of supporting actors, Dania Enwer’s performance truly shines, standing out with its remarkable and organic appeal.
The Strengths
Jannat se Aagay’s well-crafted script is its strongest asset. Ramsha Khan’s stellar performance also adds to its engagement value. The script keeps viewers on the edge of their seats with its unpredictability and offers a refreshing break from clichéd storylines. Also, the character arcs are thoughtfully developed, adding depth and intrigue to the narrative.
Jannat Se Aagay reminds me of Umera Ahmed’s most masterfully written and unforgettable dramas which I have re-watched repeatedly. What stands out so far is Umera Ahmed’s signature style of storytelling, characterized by its seemingly straightforward surface narrative that conceals a deep and impactful core.
The Shortcomings
While the storytelling is engaging, the overall treatment given to the story occasionally hinders its pace. Some scenes tend to linger longer than necessary, which can test the viewers’ patience. Moreover, the background score does not consistently live up to expectations. There are instances where it fails to enhance the emotional impact of important scenes, missing opportunities to elevate the viewing experience.
One aspect that has proven to be particularly distracting is the way food consumption scenes are filmed in the drama. These scenes are a frequent occurrence in each episode, but what stands out is the obvious effort made by the actors to avoid actually eating the food, and this tends to detract from the overall viewing experience. While it is completely understandable that actors want to abstain from consuming unhealthy food, it raises the question of whether there could be alternative methods employed by the writer and director to depict these characters in more natural dining settings. This could be achieved by creative camera angles, close-ups of food, or skillful editing that maintains the illusion of food enjoyment without actual consumption.
Final Remarks
Jannat Se Aagay covers a broader and more profound narrative than just delving into the world of morning shows, the women who host them, and the competition for higher ratings. While these elements are certainly part of the storyline, the drama digs deeper into complex themes and human relationships. The drama also ventures into the exploration of love, ambition, and the quest for contentment. Most of the characters in the drama are in search of their ‘jannat’ which makes for an interesting watch.

Pakistani dramas often fail to hold viewers’ interest until the end. There are only a few dramas that manage to captivate audiences throughout their run, leaving a lasting impression. Jannat Se Aagay was definitely one such drama. Jannat Se Aagay not only succeeded in keeping my interest alive but also left a lasting impact with its compelling storyline, well-developed characters, and exceptional performances, especially by Ramsha Khan and Kubra Khan. Although this last episode of Jannat Se Aagay was not as wholesome as I was expecting it to be, the drama delivered as a whole.
The drama skillfully navigated through multiple themes, touching upon issues that are extremely relevant in a world overpowered by ‘influencers’. This narrative encouraged viewers to critically examine the impact of influencers on societal values, individual aspirations, and the blurred lines between reality and the carefully ‘edited’ images presented online and on media.
Although the main protagonist was a Morning Show host, the story definitely transcended the conventional boundaries of its setting. Umera Ahmed utilized the backdrop of electronic media as a platform to delve into deeper societal issues, moral dilemmas, or the intricate interplay between influencers and those they are influencing. As the story progressed, it unfolded as a canvas with a larger, more meaningful agenda. Not to mention the fact that different Morning Shows on Pakistani channels failed us time and again by promoting regressive themes as well as materialism.
Whether it was the exploration of exceeding materialism in society at large or the struggles of individuals trying to carve their paths in the world, Jannat Se Aagay approached these subjects with depth and authenticity.
Apologies and Realizations
The last two episodes of Jannat Se Aagay focused entirely on apologies and realizations. Jannat’s realization was shown gradually. Even with all the abundance and wealth, she always felt empty inside and was losing everything she treasured once. The flashback scenes in the last few episodes were much-needed since I always wondered how Nauman and Jannat’s relationship was before she became rich and famous.
Jannat’s character was beautifully etched out. Away from the demands and responsibilities of her professional life, her character consistently revealed a gentle and kind side. This subtle but impactful shift in demeanor, from work to personal life, served as an appealing element in the narrative, offering a glimpse into the private, more vulnerable aspects of her character. Kubra Khan’s nuanced performance breathed life into Jannat’s character. However, I felt as if Jannat was also ‘punished’ in a way at the end since the viewers were not shown her ‘happy ending’ or her new beginning.
Tabbasum’s journey was equally wholesome and definitely surprising as well. Her journey had a more gratifying ending than that of Jannat. I am certain the majority of the viewers were expecting her to be a Morning Show host but I am glad that the writer kept her track concise and meaningful. Had the preview of the next episodes not been so elaborate, many of us would also have anticipated her to speak against Jannat just as requested by Ayla. Ramsha Khan nailed her role from the beginning till the end. The highlight of the final episode was Tabbasum and Jannat forming a strong bond in the end.
Farooq’s mother was completely absent in the last 2 episodes. I missed her presence since Tabbasum owed her an apology as well and she was one of the most likable supporting characters. Tabbasum’s parents and siblings were to be partially blamed as well for burdening her with their demands; it would have been good if their perspective was shown in these last 2 episodes as well. Also, it would have been better if Jannat was the one who made the final decision instead of Nauman handing over the ring to her. Nauman’s character and his track were a weak link in an otherwise strong plot. He was nothing more than a greedy, good-for-nothing loser who did not entirely take responsibility for his actions right till the end.
Zara’s actions made little sense as well since she was not in a position to judge Noman for sinning differently! She was equally involved in this affair and seemed okay with Noman minting money from his wife for making the restaurant before leaving her for good. It would have been so much better if she left Noman out of fear or perhaps greed. I found it really difficult to relate to her actions in this last episode and whatever she did, did not redeem her character. Did this track even need so much attention? Noman being a greedy thief could have been bad enough.
Final Remarks
Jannat and Tabbasum’s journey was like a mirror reflecting the natural human tendency to yearn for more, often at the expense of losing sight of the blessings already present. This story served as a compelling reminder of the importance of limiting one’s ambitions and establishing personal boundaries.
It highlighted the potential consequences of unchecked desires aptly.
Jannat Se Aagay also shed light on the far-reaching impact of media on the collective mindset of society. It showed how the information spread through various media channels could shape opinions, influence attitudes, and contribute considerably to the collective consciousness. At the same time, it conveyed that the choices made by individuals in selecting and engaging with media content significantly contribute to the overall impact and influence of media narratives.
Umera Ahmed’s signature style was easily detectable in Jannat Se Aagay, spiritualism is one of her favorite themes which she adds to most of her scripts. Gratitude constitutes an important part of religion and Tabbasum’s ending in particular highlighted its importance. With the exception of Farooq and his mother, every other character in the drama was more or less drawn to materialism, desiring more than what they possessed.
Jannat Se Aagay had a slow start but it turned out to be an exceptional drama with great entertainment value. It will also be remembered as one of the few dramas on Geo which did not overstay their welcome. The narrative was unpredictable throughout and the human-like characters made it relatable. Had the writer and producers used the enticing formulas in the first few episodes, this drama would have been more well-received by the audience. The focus on Jannat’s character and show made perfect sense but it was unfamiliar territory and these episodes were slow-paced therefore even I had a difficult time warming up to Jannat Se Aagay in the beginning. Once it took off, there was no looking back!
The fact that Jannat Se Aagay picked up pace later on impacted its ratings. It is also highly unfortunate that such quality content did not get the attention it deserved from the viewers. All those viewers who gave up on this drama after watching the first few episodes should definitely give it another shot.
Jannat Se Aagay may not have been picture-perfect, but it undeniably offered an entertaining and meaningful experience, delivering a well-rounded package to its audience.

Tabbasum & Jannat’s Journeys
Tabbasum and Jannat’s characters have gradually evolved in the past few weeks. The change in Tabbasum’s personality has been the most shocking yet the most engaging element of the story. At first, it seemed as if Tabbasum admired Jannat but with every passing episode, it is becoming clearer that she was attracted to her lifestyle more than anything else. Now Tabbasum feels unhealthy and intense competition towards Jannat – something which no one saw coming. Jannat has been nothing but insanely generous towards Tabbasum. However, Tabbasum is convinced that just because Jannat has everything in abundance, she owes her even more. Multiple dialogues in this particular episode made it clearer than ever that Tabbasum’s feelings towards Jannat have completely changed.
In the most convoluted way, Tabbasum harbors a deep-seated envy for Jannat, driven by an unrelenting desire to occupy the same position as Jannat. Tabbasum firmly believes that she is the one who rightfully deserves to be in Jannat’s place. It is also interesting that much of what she is doing at the moment is actually a product of the idealism with which she followed Jannat’s shows over the years. In this particular episode, she reminded Jannat of the effect the content of these shows had on her and now she was confused with Jannat’s stance regarding her future. This message hits home because not just morning shows but many of the influencers are selling this mindset on social media all the time without thinking about the consequences. I also find it really interesting how Tabbasum manages to fool Jannat and everyone else around her. So much so that there are times when even as a viewer you are left wondering if she really is innocent! Ramsha Khan has done exceptionally well while translating this dual personality of her character on-screen. She used this persona of hers so convincingly that you wonder if she herself is aware of how wrong she is!
Jannat, on the other hand, is getting more unsure about what she wants from life and has been shown questioning her own judgment multiple times. Her rocky married life coupled with the mind games that Tabbasum has been playing has made her more uncertain about everything around her than ever. She forgives Tabbasum every time because she is convinced that Tabbasum is naïve. She also continues to trust her perhaps because she is too scared of being betrayed by another person she attached her hopes to. Jannat’s character and her dynamics are quite interesting as well. The writer has made sure that her actions are justified and Kubra Khan makes the character likable. There is a loving and sensitive side to Jannat’s personality which takes a backseat when she is performing her job as the morning show host.
Even after all these weeks, it is difficult to predict the actions or reactions of both these characters. However, whenever something new unfolds it is presented in such a manner that you find it relatable and it does not take a lot of time accepting these situations. For instance, Farooq and Tabbasum’s wedding was the most unexpected development yet it has been shown in such a way that you don’t feel the need to question it.
Farooq and Nauman
These two men definitely do not take centre stage in the story but they play an important role in driving the tracks of the female protagonists to different directions. Nauman is using Jannat and intends to leave her once he is financially stable with her help. Interestingly enough, just like Tabbasum, Nauman also feels entitled to do so! Nauman does not bring much to the table except for showing that Jannat’s relationship with him was compromised due to her other ambitions. However, watching how manipulative and conniving Nauman is one wonders if he was actually worth it! Did Jannat really lose someone who was worth keeping?
Farooq on the other hand is poles apart he wants to rescue Tabbasum from herself! I think one of the main reasons why Tabbasum decided to marry him was that she knew that she could exert as much influence on him as she wanted. Farooq knew that he was making the most difficult decision of his life by marrying Tabbasum and he entered this marriage with a realistic mindset. He has been looking out for Tabbasum ever since they were children and apart from his love for her, he is more convinced than ever that she needs rescuing.
Talha Chahour’s performance leaves a lot to be desired. As I mentioned in my previous review, he continues to overdo the becharapan because of which sometimes it is difficult to feel for his character. This was the kind of character I could have fallen in love with even more if the performance was up to the mark throughout. There are times when he delivers but there are too many instances where he fails to add the much-needed subtlety to his role.
Final Remarks
Jannat Se Aagay is one of the few dramas right now that I look forward to watching. After a long time, Umera Ahmed has written a drama that is both entertaining and engaging. The execution tends to falter at times but overall it is one of the best dramas on air right now. Tabbasum’s wedding dress was one of the many disappointments in terms of execution in this particular episode especially because there was so much hype surrounding it. Ramsha Khan is undoubtedly the star of the show and Umera Ahmed’s script is a complete winner.
