The Pakistani drama industry has seen many ups and downs. The producers have through the years worked hard to keep it afloat. Unfortunately in an attempt to do so, there has been a serious regression in the content being aired on the mainstream channels in particular. These channels dare to air content that isn’t ‘mainstream’ in their opinion every now and then. Most often however these channels make sure that they do not do so in order to ensure ratings and revenues. These producers also insist that stories that slide away from what the viewers want to watch on these channels are rejected and therefore they have to bear the loss.
Many television dramas such as Ranjha Ranjha Kardi, Dar Si Jati Hei Sila, Parizaad, Dil Na Umeed Tu Nahin, Raqeeb Se, Ehd-e-Wafa, Aakhri Station, and many others won the viewers over in the recent past, got the ratings and appreciation even though the stories were not run-of-the-mill. However, the producers and writers still insist that such dramas do not get the attention and ratings which other typical dramas get. Parizaad’s success lately proved otherwise. If a different drama is executed in a fine manner, it does get the ratings as well and also wins over the critics. There is definitely a large group among the audience who want to watch dramas that do not revolve around typical scenarios.
It would be safe to say that making quality dramas requires a lot of hard work, creativity and obviously time and the fact is that most channels have to keep airing dramas all through the year therefore they just cannot invest so much in every single project. The done-to-death formulas do get these channels the required ratings therefore obviously this shortcut serves their purpose better. Many actors and directors have shared their frustrations regarding the issue in interviews and on social media. And when the numbers are there for everyone to see, it is easier for them to blame the viewers for choosing to watch substandard dramas. They fail to acknowledge the fact that there is also a massive viewership for quality content because that does not support their own agendas.
While the public is blamed constantly for leaving the producers with absolutely no choice, there is also constant criticism on social media by the same public about the decline of Pakistani dramas. Such criticism is often brushed under the carpet because there are still plenty of viewers out there who are willing to watch and give ratings to content that is easy to produce and recycle. Unfortunately, this season more than ever, the channels which have given some outstanding dramas in the past have aired dramas that simply do not fit the bill. It is more obvious than ever that these 3 mainstream channels are responsible for the gradual fall of Pakistani dramas since they are the real stakeholders. While we acknowledge and understand that these channels have to earn revenue, we also feel that they have a duty to ensure that the quality of Pakistani dramas does not go further downhill.
Here are some set patterns followed by the leading channels, most of their dramas revolve around these patterns and therefore we hold them responsible for the fall of Pakistani dramas at the moment.
Geo Dramas
Drag Till Everyone Loses Interest
Geo dramas do get the ratings, there is no denying that but when was the last time Geo actually focused its energies on making and promoting quality content. Jo Bichar Gaye aired on Geo, it was a groundbreaking drama serial but by treating it like a second-rate project which did not require promotion or attention by the channel, Geo proved where its priorities lie! The television channel most often relies on star power, great visuals, and marketing strategies and they make sure that these dramas are dragged to a point that even the most loyal viewers stop watching these shows. Many of their dramas were dragged so much after they got the ratings that the only thing the viewers looked forward to was an ending! Geo has not just been recycling script ideas but they even do not put in a lot of effort into designing the posters of their dramas. These posters too have a set pattern! Even if you start watching a drama airing on Geo which you like, there is always this stress at the back of your mind that you will end up regretting it once this drama is stretched like chewing gum.
ARY Dramas
Spreading Toxicity Is The Key
ARY Digital is falling short big time for the longest time now. There have been instances when the channel aired good dramas, as is the case with all the other leading channels. But the fact is that ARY has been banking extensively on giving maximum screen time and attention to toxic characters. Apart from this, ARY takes up serious, sensitive topics and most often ends up using them for commercial purposes. Most of the dramas airing on the channel usually start off at a great pace and the shock value is used to entice the viewers. Unfortunately, this shock value is not used intelligently and is merely used as clickbait. The strategy has been working so well for the channel that recently they roped in a credible writer such as Radain Shah to write a play like Kaisi Teri Khudgarzi. Recently, ARY’s favorite topic seems to be obsessive and stubborn leads that have a very twisted idea of love. From Balaa to Kaisi Teri Khudgarzi, ARY Digital definitely takes the cake when it comes to glorifying negativity.
Hum Dramas
Frustrate Viewers Only After Engaging Them!
If we compare the kind of content that airs on ARY and Geo, Hum is definitely the ‘better’ channel but that’s only because the other channels are not doing well enough. The dramas that air on Hum often are different from the ones that air on the other two channels. That is why while shortlisting dramas which dared to be different, Hum’s dramas were in majority. However, it is obvious that in the recent past Hum is also not experimenting the way it was before. Some of their best dramas in the recent past went downhill after a few episodes. Their dramas start off promising they offer something completely brand new and once viewers are sure that they will not go down a familiar road, they tend to disappoint. Many viewers stop watching such dramas when that happens. Viewers who attach high hopes to dramas get frustrated when they start taking a route that is a little too familiar and not in line with the refreshing element of these dramas. Hum’s new dramas unfortunately offer nothing new and bank on family politics and bechari aurat for ratings.
The only reason most of us expect the best from Pakistani drama makers is that we know what they are capable of. Watching the leading channels settle for less just to stay out of trouble or for easier access to ratings has been a massive disappointment. There are still a handful of Pakistani dramas that fit the bill but we feel that currently, the downfall of Pakistani dramas has started yet again. We want to let the channels know that viewers can see what they are up to and expect them to up their game!

A couple of days ago Nadia Afgan appeared in a show “Time Out With Ahsan Khan” in which he stated that she don’t have kids by her own choice. She further said that “At one time I thought we should have kids but then I thought there are many kids in the world. I don’t plan a family anymore.”
After receiving hate and criticism on her recent statement regarding planning a family and having kids, Nadia Afgan shared her painful story and revealed the actual reason behind not having kids. Nadia while sharing her heart wrenching story mentioned that she never thought of sharing this publicly, but it needs to be shared now. According to Nadia she believed that woman will understand her pain but they were the ones who criticized her the most after her recent statement.
“In 15 years of marriage, we really wanted to have our own children one day, but Allah had other plans and like everything else in life, we submitted to His will. I had two miscarriages, I have gotten three failed IUIs done, I have battled depression after losing two unborn children, I have struggled with panic attacks fearing another miscarriage, and I have gained tonnes of weight because of hormonal issues. We were all set for an IVF but I just couldn’t go ahead with it”, she added.
Nadia while praising her husband, said that he has been very supportive throughout my journey as he only cared about her comfort and health. At the same time Nadia expressed her sadness as she was shocked to see the reaction women gave her, instead of respecting her decision and giving her space.

Famous TV host and Politician Aamir Liaquat’s sudden demise left everyone in shock. On the 9th of June, Aamir Liaquat was found unconscious at his residence and was rushed to Aga Khan University Hospital but was declared dead upon arrival. Many expressed grief over his sudden passing and offered condolences to his family.
Recently, a throwback video of Aamir Liaquat from his Ramzan show popped up on social media in which he revealed the reason behind not attending his brother Imran Liaquat Hussain’s funeral. “My brother Imran Liaquat Hussain went astray after which my parents decided not to give him any share in our property. That is why I didn’t attend my brother’s funeral, neither I pray for his forgiveness”, said Aamir Liaquat.
Aamir further added that “I’m not shia, I’m Sunni but I want people to just stop this fight between Shia and Sunni. We all are Muslims and we should live happily together.”
These 3 episodes of Mor Maharan covered all the tracks and also gave further insights into the characters. The most recent episode covered Almas’ backstory as well. There was more focus on Rohi and Sikandar’s track in the 4th and 5th episodes which I felt could easily have been replaced with showing more of Gurdezi. Gurdezi and Rohi’s first actual meeting was also covered last week. Mor Maharan has an interesting storyline that holds your interest but the production values are not as grand as most Pakistani dramas right now. However, I feel that it is better than the rest of the plays right now with run-of-the-mill stories. Also, I have to say that Mustafa Changazi’s acting is turning out to be the most annoying aspect of the drama. Sikandar’s characters get a lot of screen time, it definitely is layered, it is also well-written but Mustafa Changazi is seen struggling while giving the right expressions most of the time.
Another aspect of the show which I hope gets better is the fact that the story of different characters has not been spread evenly in different episodes. It would be far better to show a little bit of all the tracks in each episode instead of focusing on a single one. Rohi continues to be the main attraction. I see Mor Maharan as a story of strong-willed women more than anything else, at this point. Right now, the water issue which was introduced as one of the main focal points of the story is not getting as much attention as it was before. However, there are various aspects of respecting the culture, heritage, and life of the area which were covered in these episodes. Mor Maharan keeps me intrigued and looking forward to more even though at times the treatment given to the play is not too impressive.
Interesting Characters
Mor Maharan’s intriguing and interesting characters continue to be its strength. Even after these 6 episodes, I feel I am still getting to know these characters. The writer is slowly unveiling the backgrounds, strengths, and weaknesses of the main characters. Each one of these characters has a story to tell and so far all these stories are equally interesting. It is also good to watch a leading lady who is fierce, unapologetic, and has a goal in life. At the same time, she is romantic and completely capable of falling in love. Rohi’s character has been penned down brilliantly. Rohi and Gurdezi’s first meeting was powerful – perhaps a little too filmy but definitely different and likable. Much better than a woman falling in the arms of a man, as was the case with Rohi and Sikandar! Clearly, the actual love story is that of Rohi and Sikandar but it seems as if Rohi might end up with Gurdezi. Even though Gurdezi’s character doesn’t have much to offer – he is a corrupt politician who thinks the world revolves around him – I like Zahid Ahmed in the avatar. He makes his presence felt in every scene and I find myself wanting to know more about this man even though so far it seems as if there isn’t much to the character. Rohi definitely left an impression on Gurdezi but he was not shown ‘pursuing’ her as is mostly the case in Pakistani dramas! Sooner or later he will find out who she is and I am waiting to find out how that particular part is handled. It is refreshing to watch that this man has a life other than pursuing a woman who he found attractive.
Almas is another strong woman with an interesting background. It is really good watching Sammiya Mumtaz play this character. Even though Sikandar keeps on telling her off, she does not stop trying. She is mature, intelligent, and graceful. Sikandar’s character comes across as annoying primarily because of the way it has been translated on screen. After meeting his father, it was obvious why this boy is spoiled and problematic. Nawab Feroze is equally selfish and his idea of love is quite twisted as well. Almas and Sher Alam’s relationship has been penned down and portrayed superbly. The element of respect on both sides and the way Sher Alam feels about Almas are all too evident. Babar Ali’s nuanced performance has won me over completely. Even though it is evident that Almas has nothing but regard for this man, Babar Ali through his performance has made it evident right from the start that he loves Almas. There is definitely more to Malook Shah’s character as well. Even though he seems like someone who is not too rigid but there must be a reason why Almas is so scared of Sikandar getting too close to Rohi. He might come across as progressive but he is definitely hiding something from the viewers and his own daughter.
I am not sure if it was such a great idea to use the senior actors for playing the younger roles in order to show the flashback scenes. It came across as staged. It would have been better if younger actors were used to playing these roles. That would definitely have been more realistic.
Final Remarks
These 3 episodes of Mor Maharan were interesting enough to keep my interest alive. This drama also reminds me of old PTV dramas since it does not bank on commercialism as much as most of the dramas nowadays do. So far, the script has a lot going for it and apart from Mustafa, everyone else is doing their part so well. There is something refreshing and different about all the tracks which make Mor Maharan one of those dramas which are a nice break from the majority of the ‘typical’ dramas we get to see nowadays.

The ending of any drama reflects the kind of message that the writer wanted to convey through the story. Dobara’s “happy ending” was extremely unexpected and perhaps not too convincing either since most of us are not as kind-hearted as Mehru ;) Yes, I had a difficult time forgiving Mahir and was not sure if he really deserved a woman such as Mehru. But there was definitely a hidden meaning there which I believe holds true even for such situations and people such as Mahir. While watching this ending, a part of me felt “cheated” especially because Mahir’s redemption was the last thing on my mind. Honestly speaking, I tuned into this last episode hoping to watch Mahir lose and pay for how he went behind Mehru’s back and said all those things about her. However, the last scene of this finale summed up the actual message of the drama which I feel most of us “missed”. Mehru’s kindness was her biggest strength throughout and in the end, it was this kindness that changed her destiny altogether. This show was never about Mehru turning into an independent woman but it was a love story after all! It was about Mehru winning in the end even though she was more than willing to let go and “lose”.
I must say however that in the last scene Mehru and Mahir did not come across as a married couple; this scene could have been executed in a better way. Last week, I termed whatever Mahir did as irreparable damage but in this last episode, Mehru proved that love can repair even people such as Mahir. Mahir was after all a broken person who never received love and perhaps believed that he did not deserve to be loved.
Unexpected Ending
Mehru’s meeting with Naheed was one of the highlights of this episode. We have seen quite a few strong women in Pakistani dramas over the years but I don’t remember watching a protagonist such as Mehru lately. Her niceness and genuine affection for other people never came across as a weakness. It was always her strength because it came naturally to her. Mehru was always an empath who felt for others and the only time she put her feelings above someone else’s was when she got married to Mahir. Naheed’s question about whether Mehru’s kindness really was genuine or not, is one that the viewers never had to ask. I think that is what makes this character a success even though there were many times when Mehru ‘disappointed’ me. But after watching this episode, I truly understood the message the writer wanted to convey through this character. I accept the fact that my expectations from Mehru were different altogether and the character itself was not meant to be “strong” in the way most of us wanted her to be. While we were all waiting for Mehru to take a stand for herself, the writer showed that she had a completely different viewpoint altogether. Hadiqa Kiyani was amazing as Mehru; she was especially convincing as a woman who could feel other people’s pain. She carried her character so well that even when Mehru’s actions were not in line with my expectations, I always liked watching her on-screen.
Mahir and Narmeen’s track throughout this last episode suggested that they were both confused about this decision. I am glad that the writer did not show Narmeen as a completely heartless and selfish individual. Mahir’s change of heart and his dialogues about how much he loved Mehru were hard to believe. The way he changed after 10 years was definitely more convincing since he was always in search of a mentor and he found one in Mehru. Minal’s conversation with Mahir perhaps made him change his mind somewhat since no one had ever trusted Mahir the way Minal was putting her faith in him now. This character definitely came a long way and watching his journey was wholesome. The previous few episodes were not the best, it would have been better if this part of the track was covered in a different manner. I am finding it difficult to imagine Mahir so in love with Mehru and still going ahead and doing all that he did. For the longest time, Mahir was the star of the show. Bilal Abbas Khan’s effortless performance throughout the drama won me over multiple times. I am glad he chose to play this character.
Final Remarks
Dobara had a decent ending and I felt that the final message of the drama was nothing short of a pleasant surprise. However, overall, some of the dialogues and situations could have been much better, especially in the last few episodes. The way Mahir’s changed feelings for Mehru were shown in the past two episodes, made it difficult for me to accept that he loved her in a way that he could never think of living without her. All through the drama, I found myself wondering why the story was more about Mahir and not Mehru. However, this ending definitely belonged to Mehru because she kept her dignity and love for Mahir intact right till the end. It was all shown in such a manner that even someone like me who wanted to see Mehru doing something extreme, felt that it was good that she did not do that.
Dobara was not “perfect” but overall it was a well-put-together and meaningful script. Sarwat Nazir and Danish Nawaz make a good team; however, I feel that the production houses should stop pressurizing creative individuals to prolong projects only because a certain drama gets attention and ratings. Each one of the actors performed their respective role so well that the person who chose these actors for these roles deserves special appreciation. The supporting cast was just as impressive as the actors who played the lead roles.
