Cheekh Episode 14 Story Review – A Gripping Episode

Opening Thoughts – Intense & Gripping:

Ohkay so, this was one intense & very gripping episode of Cheekh right from beginning till the end. As much as I appreciate the overall execution of this drama, I totally feel it is going to come episode by episode where some will be slow & fillers while others will be intense & interesting & this episode of Cheekh was the latter.

Mannat Has Found The Support She Was Looking For:

Shayan believed Mannat, but still there was some inhibition, some hesitance which stopped him from completely making up his mind & while he was struggling, Asad came to clear any such confusion that Shayan must’ve regarding Mannat. I really like the way Asad’s dialogues were worded, he was to-the-point & told Shayan everything that he needed to hear in order to make up his mind. It was actually good to have an insight into Asad’s character & getting to know his reasons of calling this wedding off. Asad fell in love with Haya who was compassionate & humane but as he got to know her more especially after this incident, he realized that she was not only cold-hearted but lacked the sense of right & wrong. Asad must’ve felt guilty for punishing Haya for what she was not responsible for but after everything that Wajih said & did, he could feel that his decision was justified.

Shayan shifted Mannat to her mother’s place because he wanted her to be comfortable & peaceful, which was super sweet. Shayan has now made up his mind & he is not going to back out no matter what his siblings say. The satisfaction Mannat felt was the highlight of this episode, she felt safe & secure because of all the people, it was her husband who was supporting her. Mannat’s mother’s concerns are very genuine, she knows that her daughter has a long battle to fight but still, she felt very much at ease after seeing that Shayan was by her side & was not turning his back against Mannat. I like how the writer has shown Mannat & Shayan’s relationship, like in such a drama, it acts as a therapy to break free from all the negativity surrounding Mannat’s life.

The most interesting scene of this episode was the interaction between Mannat & Wajih’s lawyer. He actually went to see Mannat’s calibre & to judge whether she is the kind who will get intimidated easily but to his surprise, Mannat was far more strong-willed than he had imagined. Mannat made sure to leave such an impression on him where he knows that she is not a soft target rather she is very focused & serious. The lawyer made sure to convey it to Yawar that Mannat is a force to be reckoned with & what’s more interesting was that he could foresee Mannat making it very tough for him to win this case. Quite an impression I must say.

Another interesting scene was Shayan’s interaction with Wajih where he openly let him know that he doesn’t trust him & actually knows that Wajih is guilty. Asad really helped Shayan in making up his mind but Shayan also felt that Yawar was unduly protecting Wajih. Yawar has made it very clear that he sees Wajih as his child, that is why like an over-protective father, he is making sure Wajih stays safe.

Shehwar has also started thinking things through. No matter what Yawar says she can not take whatever Wajih said out of her mind. I think it is another important development & is more of an evolvement of Shehwar’s character where she is seeing things & paying attention to whatever is happening around her. Shehwar lived in a bubble probably because Yawar never really allowed her the luxury of having an opinion or perspective, but now she feels left out & can see that something is definitely odd. It is good that Shehwar is turning out to be someone more than just a silent spectator. Plus it was obvious that Shehwar feels for Mannat but because she has seen how much Yawar detests her, she doesn’t openly say so, which I am certain will change in the future.

Closing Thoughts – Wajih Is Boring, Monotonous & Annoying:

Overall, after quite a few weeks, I enjoyed this episode of Cheekh a lot. I must say I really liked all the different background music they used to intensify the situation, far more than the OST. I am sure the editors or the producers love the OST but I don’t think is it easy on the ears to be heard repetitively. Most of the initial scenes had the OST running in the background which I actually found quite off-putting. Saba Qamar & Emaad Irfani were the stars of this episode, but yes, just when I thought Emaad Irfani was performing brilliantly, his voice modulation in his outburst scene actually made me giggle a bit.

I don’t know why but I think they should kind of mellow down Wajih’s character a bit, like we get it, he’s an unapologetic narcissist, but to hear him passing statement at every single thing or person is kind of too much & is actually getting monotonous. We understand that he is not only aloof to what he has done but does not have any remorse whatsoever, but now it looks like he is too much of a talk because we can see that it is Yawar who is doing most of the heavy-lifting. I guess we have heard enough from Wajih so he should just take a back-seat but then unfortunately, because he is the actual villain, I don’t see him getting subdued anytime soon. I find his rants & one-liners boring & off-putting, like it almost feels as if there’s nothing more to him & he is a one-dimensional character. I feel the writer paid a lot of attention on Mannat’s character therefore she forgot to add some layers in Wajih’s character. I think if Wajih had some more personality or traits apart from intimidating people with his childish antics or also getting slapped, things would’ve been far more intense. Anyways, the direction of Cheekh is spot-on so far but yes, I wish they speed up the pace. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Cheekh.

Cheekh Episode 13 Story Review – Double Episodes Needed

Opening Thoughts – Double Episodes Please!!!

Ohkay so, the reason why I am posting this review late is because I couldn’t watch this episode of Cheekh in one go. Yes, this episode was decent but then again, I found it repetitive & quite hard to watch. Considering the amount of repetition & slow pace this drama has, I think it’s about time that the channel should start airing double episodes to keep the interest of the viewers in this show intact.

Mannat’s Character Was Being Assassinated:

In this episode of Cheekh, the main focus was again on everyone’s mental state & condition where some were trying to figure a way out & the others were only making sure that the truth remains untold. In this episode, there was a lot of emphasis on Mannat’s character assassination but then, those dialogues were repetitive to the point of being boring. Wajih’s character gets a lot of limelight considering he is the main culprit but then again, there’s nothing interesting or exciting about him because all he does is intimidate, lie, play the victim & repeat!

The only important little detail that was revealed in this episode of Cheekh was why Yawar was so emotionally attached to his siblings – that is because he does not have a child of his own therefore he treats his siblings as his kids & he has invested all of his energies in them, so much so that he doesn’t even feel the need to have a child of his own as well. I felt this was also the reason behind his disconnect with his wife Shehwar as he can not understand what she goes through. After that conversation between Shehwar & Yawar, it was kind of easy to understand why Yawar was being so over-protective of Wajih, he was acting like that father who makes sure his kids stay safe & unharmed, even if he knows that they are guilty. Yawar has totally forgotten that Wajih has killed Nayab, rather the only thing he wants is to make sure that Wajih doesn’t go to jail. Shehwar was presented with an opportunity to tell the truth but she chose not to say anything & that pretty much told Mannat that she was not going to find any support whatsoever from anyone in this household.

Shayan was confused & his brothers made sure to feed him the lies they had fabricated against Mannat, so that she leaves. Shayan was basically getting a chance to analyse both sides of the story but he still was not sure what to make out of it. He did see how Mannat was standing firm but then, the seed of doubt that was planted in his mind by both Wajih & Yawar made it even harder for him to blindly trust & support Mannat.

So, Wajih got a beating from his friend but he put an entire blame on Asad. I think Shayan’s decision must’ve come with a solid reason which I think is that Asad must’ve told Shayan to let Mannat go out of this environment which was only being toxic for her. I am sure Shayan must’ve told Mannat to go only because he does not want Wajih,Yawar, Haya & even the servants of the house to speak against Mannat. After getting to know Shayan so far, I feel this must be the reason why he told Mannat to leave – in order to protect her & keep her sanity intact.

Closing Thoughts – Repetitive & Stagnant:

This episode of Cheekh was alright but I guess the slow pace & repetitive scenarios are taking away the charm of the drama. Also, I think they should now move the story forward & show us the case & courts in stead of domestic politics & Mannat’s character assassination. After seeing the preview of the next episode, I am again not too sure what to expect nor am I excited because they ended the last episode on such an intense note that Shahwar overheard Wajih but in this episode, nothing much really happened. Yes, Shahwar must be doubting Wajih too she won’t say much I think till the last episode. Also, the most annoying aspect of this drama is that continuous Ho Ho Ho Ho soundtrack that keeps on playing in every single episode to showcase the sufferings of an oppressed party. I hope the editors stop using that because it is very annoying. Anyways, please share your thoughts about this episode of Cheekh.

Cheekh Episode 12 Story Review – Realistic Portrayal

Opening Thoughts – Intense & Interesting:

Ohkay so, this episode of Cheekh was interesting & intense. It kept me engaged right from the beginning till the end. The previous episodes showed the battle between the two parties but now, it was all about that one person who was torn between his life partner & his siblings. The way the writer penned down this entire scenario was quite interesting because it was all very realistic & convincing.

Shayan Was Trying To Figure Things Out:

Shayan came back & ever since his return, he was being fed one lie after another. On one side, he saw his siblings angry, frustrated & in a hurry to hear his final decision but on the other, there was Mannat, all alone, content but still standing by her words & facing all the atrocities coming her way patiently. Shayan took a little time to analyze what was happening, how Mannat was being treated & what her behavior towards others was & despite being confused, he kind of saw some sort of honesty in Mannat.

Shayan made it clear to Mannat that he can not give his vote to either her or Wajih, as in order to do that he needed some time but seeing how Mannat was even ready to put her marriage at stake did hit Shayan hard. He couldn’t really comprehend why it was so easy for Mannat to even think on those lines where she was ready to let go of him. It did force Shayan to do some thinking & as he spent time in that house, he could see all the wrong that was happening.

In this episode, Shehwar got some coverage too where she decided to ask some questions but was sternly silenced by her husband Yawar. Yawar is a sure shot hypocrite where he preaches one thing but practices the complete opposite. Yawar’s interaction with Shehwar also showed the kind of relationship they both share where Yawar does not give Shehwar the freedom to think or question, plus he wants her to follow his orders all the time. Going by how Shehwar’s attitude later was in the rest of the episode, it did show that she is quite submissive & is someone who might not question her husband or doubt his choices.

It was nice to see how slowly Mannat was starting to get the support of Shayan. When he came it did look like he was flustered & unhappy with her but slowly & steadily it was obvious that he was feeling a lot for Mannat after witnessing himself what she was going through. Haya really is turning out to be an annoying character but then all those who will blindly support Wajih till they find out the truth will remain annoying. Haya is the youngest, therefore she can not even imagine the fact that her brother is capable of doing something so horrid, that is why she wanted Mannat out of her life & her house because she doesn’t believe in Mannat’s side of the story. I really liked how Shayan slowly started taking a stand for his wife, yes, he is torn between Wajih & Mannat but it was nice that he was not blindly supporting his younger brother. He was hearing whatever Yawar, Haya & Wajih had to say while also giving Mannat a chance to explain if she wanted to. After this episode, it is kind of clear that Shayan will not go by what his family says, he will always use his sensibilities & will base his decisions in his own judgment.

The last scene of this episode was again an interesting development. Shahwar heard whatever Wajih was saying to Mannat & as the preview suggested, she will be questioning Yawar later but I am sure Yawar will silence her again but I am sure this little incident will stay with her & make her curious to not just ignore whatever is happening around because her husband said so.

Closing Thoughts – Realistic Approach:

Overall, this episode of Cheekh was really nice. It had some sweet moments & some very intense & dramatic ones too. So far, what I love about Cheekh is that the writer has kept it very realistic & to the point. All the emotions, all the reactions, all the conversations seem very real & that means this drama will resonate with all the viewers because of the nature of its execution. All the actors are performing brilliantly, so well done Team Cheekh. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Cheekh.

Cheekh Episode 11 – Story Review

Opening Thoughts – Long Scenes:

Ohkay so, this episode of Cheekh gave a new turn to the story, where the opponent is now going to get harrassed & this is just the beginning. Even though this episode was interesting but I found the scenes a bit too long & some conversations never-ending. It is a fact that they are going to switch the pace in every other episode so I guess the viewers will have to bear with the comparatively slow episodes. Having said that, it is definitely worth mentioning that this episode of Cheekh was definitely interesting but it could’ve been better!

Wajih Is Back:

Wajih was in the jail & Yawar was doing everything in his might to ensure he comes out as soon as possible. Yawar was also making sure to take care of Mannat because he has realized that she is a force to reckon with & now she is unstoppable. Yawar’s first attempt to pressurize Mannat was to use her mother & even she returned disappointed because Mannat clearly told her what her intentions were.

Wajih came back & the first person he wanted to talk to was Mannat, to let her know that he will not go easy on her. Mannat did face him with a lot of confidence & that was something that Wajih never thought he’d get to see. To be honest, as much as that scene was important, I didn’t feel the intensity in it & felt it kind of lacked the impact. Not sure whether it was because of the length of that scene or the way both the actors were acting it out, in stead of looking like a powerful defining moment of the drama, it kind of seemed boring where I wanted it to end quickly. Even though Mannat has made up her mind that she is going to punish Wajih, I’d have liked if she had stayed stern with him rather than fluttering her eyelashes & having a playful flirtatious take at how she is going to get him punished, it kind of took away the intensity & seriousness that moment required to make an impact. Yes, Mannat was trying to challenge him by letting him know that she is not scared of him but she could’ve conveyed that without teasing him as if she was telling him a joke, because this is what it looked like.

Asad has called his marriage with Haya quits. As much as I understand how he is feeling, I guess to add more depth to this situation, they should’ve given Asad a little coverage in every single episode right from the beginning to make it more convincing that he was struggling with Nayab’s tragic death too. Yes, they did show that he used to talk to Haya about Nayab in a couple of previous episodes, but I guess that wasn’t enough to lead it to this point where he decided to call it off because he thinks Haya’s entire family is lying. It kind of looked sudden. May be a conversation here & there with Mannat about Nayab would’ve established the fact better that Asad was deeply affected by this incident but that wasn’t the case & what he did seemed totally out of the blue.

So, Wajih has started playing dirty. Obviously, for someone like Wajih who doesn’t respect women to begin with, it was very easy to accuse Mannat of cheating on her husband with Asad. This way Wajih got Haya on his side too who already was on his side but now she’ll have all the more reason to believe Wajih & hate Mannat. Yawar is coming across as such a big hypocrite because he preached about respecting women but when it came to Wajih, he didn’t mind lying to Shayan to make him doubt his wife. It is pretty obvious that Wajih & Yawar have formed a team & in order to protect Wajih, Yawar has bid farewell to the sense of right & wrong. For him, what matters the most is Wajih’s safety & it is unfortunate that he is siding with the culprit & giving him this confidence that no matter what he does, his eldest brother will always be there to protect him.

All the things that were suggested against Mannat went to show how easy it usually is for everyone to pinpoint finger at a woman & what’s sick is that despite knowing who the culprit is, Wajih’s brother is supporting him too. Shayan kind of paid heed to what both his brothers said to him about Mannat & Asad. Not sure how long will he take to believe that his wife is innocent & that his brother is the culprit.

Closing Thoughts – Could’ve Been Better:

Overall, this episode was good but it could’ve been a lot better. The execution that this episode got could’ve been a bit more convincing if they had chopped the scenes down. I really hope that they don’t drag the story in order to make the most of the ratings. I am totally fine with Bilal Abbas playing the role of Wajih, but what I am not ohkay is with the mumbling that he does, I just can not understand what he says & it gets very annoying. Saba Qamar, Nayyer Ejaz & Aijaz Aslam are performing brilliantly & the direction is great too, it’s just that this episode didn’t make an impact that it should have. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Cheekh.

Cheekh Episode 10 Story Review – Brilliant Episode

Opening Thoughts: One Word – Brilliant:

Ohkay so, it was a brilliant episode of Cheekh & it reminded me of those initial episodes which kept me engaged right from the beginning till the end. Finally the main phase of the story has kick-started & I can’t wait to see how things will unravel in the future. I loved the way this episode was edited especially because it kept the suspense going & made it a very interesting watch.

Mannat Has Opened Up The Case:

Mannat knew she was better than this, she knew she had this in her but till now, she wasn’t pushed to the limit. Mannat mourned the death of Nayab for a long time & just when everyone around her thought that the best solution for her was a change of place, a time away from everyone here, Mannat did agree but still her heart wasn’t at ease. What pushed Mannat was her interaction with Shamsa. Even though so far Shamsa hasn’t said anything productive but this time around, she definitely deserves the credit for pushing Mannat to that limit where she finally decided to do what was right. Mannat at first thought she should help Ramzan but when she saw him in that condition, it was what convinced her that she shouldn’t turn her back towards him, she just shouldn’t run away from Nayab & the truth. The expression that Mannat had on her face when she left the police station said it all, after a long long time, probably for the first time Mannat felt at ease, she felt empowered & confident that she could do this. I loved how it was shown that even though Mannat must’ve taken the impulsive decision to file an FIR against Wajih, but as the episode progressed she regained her calm & composure & fed it to herself that yes, she has waged a war against the culprit so now, all she has to do is stand firm on her ground.

In this episode, I really liked how Yawar came to the forefront & started doing everything he could to protect his younger brother. Although Yawar knows that Wajih is a murderer, for now he only wants to save him & his entire family from getting humiliated. So, Yawar met this friend who happens to be a lawyer (Shabbir Jaan) & just that one powerful scene was enough to showcase the kind of morals & values he professionally holds. For him, maintaining his track record is what matters the most & he clearly mentioned that he will not even think twice before crossing the limits to make sure he wins the case.

Cheekh Episode 10 Story Review - Brilliant Episode

Wajih thought he had won this case, with Mannat leaving, he actually thought he was in a clear & this chapter was closed but what Mannat did shook him to no end. What Wajih feels for Mannat now is sheer hatred. At first Wajih did still maintain some kind of line with Mannat because he had this idea that she won’t harm him so he decided not to be reckless with her but now when he will come back, he has made up his mind that he won’t spare her.

Yawar decided to finally call & involve Shayan in this matter because he saw how the situation that seemed in control just blew out of proportion. This was yet another way or probably one of the first attempts of Yawar to pressurize Mannat to take the case back & withdraw the FIR. I loved the little interaction that Yawar had with Mannat, it was like at that moment, he finally realized that Mannat was never going to back out. She will not succumb to any pressures, Yawar saw that in her eyes & the satisfaction on Mannat’s face after Wajih’s arrest actually distressed Yawar even more.

So, Ramzan is out & Mannat is now mustering up the courage because she knows it is going to be a long journey & this is just the beginning. Wajih crossed all the levels of tortures with Ramzan only because of one slap, so I am just wondering what he will do to Mannat now that she sent him to the jail. I am glad that from next week Shayan will be in the picture too, looks like Mannat will have a lot of explaining & convincing to do, to make him understand & realize. I am glad that they have kept things very very real & there’s not even a single character or scenario that seems overboard or unrealistic. Superb!

Closing Thoughts – Bilal Abbas As Wajih Is Convincing:

Overall, this episode of Cheekh was simply brilliant. I am glad that after a few slow episodes, they finally moved things forward & also introduced a new character. I have seen a lot such comments where viewers are of the opinion that Bilal Abbas is unconvincing as Wajih & they think some character actor should’ve played this role. Honestly speaking, ever since this drama began I never really had any opinion about him but while watching this episode, Bilal Abbas as Wajih made a lot of sense to me. I think they have done a right thing by assigning Wajih’s character to Bilal Abbas & they have given this character this kind of personality where he seems sweet, innocent & a guy-next-door because of which no one can actually imagine that he’d do something like this & this is what makes things harder for Mannat to convince people that he is the culprit. Usually, we never really know but the most innocent & nice looking people can have such evil intentions & criminal tendencies that after you find out, the first reaction is that of not being able to believe that someone like him could do something like this. In Cheekh, this is what Wajih’s character is all about too – a nice, innocent looking guy, everyone’s favourite & seemingly gentle & harmless person who has succeeded in making this impression on others, but in reality, he has this side to his personality that no one ever knew existed. So yes, I totally see Bilal Abbas as the right choice because I am glad they didn’t show that the criminal should have some kind of creepy aura or something odd about him, people who look very normal can commit such crimes as well. Yes, the only complain I have with him is the mumbling that he does & he definitely needs to work on it. Saba Qamar & Aijaz Aslam were the stars of this episode – loved their acting & expressions. It seemed like they both are two forces to be reckoned with & they both were doing all in their might to make sure they get what they want. Direction is flawless & so is the editing. Very impressed & super excited to watch the next episode. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Cheekh.

Cheekh Episode 1 Story Review – Decent Introduction

Introduction:

Ohkay so, the writing of Zanjabeel Asim Shah, direction of Bader Mehmood & production of Big Bang Production; Cheekh is a drama that has promised to raise the issue of not suffering in silence. As the drama will progress, it will become evident whether the team has stayed true to the message or not but the first episode was deliberately & rightly kept light-hearted to give an introduction to the characters as well as an insight into their lives. The first episode of Cheekh was done well but it seemed that the entire cast of Balaa was immediately hired to do the image building in this drama after such a negative drama like Balaa.

Cast, Characters & Scenarios:

The binding factor between all the character happens to be Haya (Azekah Daniel). Haya has 3 brothers Yawar (Aijaz Aslam), Shayan (Emaad Irfani) & Wajih (Bilal Abbas). Yawar is married to Shehwar (Maira Khan) & Shayan is married to Mannat (Saba Qamar).

Haya has 2 best friends Mannat & Nayab (Ushna Shah) & it was Haya who convinced her brother Shayan to get married to her best friend Mannat. Nayab on the other hand comes from a lower middle class family where her father Ramzan (Noor ul Hassan) is a clerk who remarried after his wife passed away & Nayab was probably 10 years old. Nayab’s step mother is going to play the character of Balaa in this drama where she just wants her husband to get Nayab married off to any wealthy man who will later take care of Nayab’s family too. Nayab’s step mother is selfish & typical who has nothing nice to say about Nayab.

Cheekh Episode 1 Story Review - Decent Introduction

Haya, Mannat & Nayab share a very strong bond & their scenes were the most enjoyable aspect of this episode. Mannat takes care of Nayab like her sister that is why she goes out of the way to keep her step mother happy too so that she doesn’t mistreat Nayab much. Haya gets engaged & that’s when we get an insight into her entire family. They all are close knit & very warm & affectionate towards one another. Wajih & Nayab had some sort of chemistry going on which Mannat paid heed to & that is when she decides to convince Wajih of marrying Nayab. Mannat on the other hand is in a long distance relationship with her husband who is in America for his residency. Mannat has a very easy approach on the life where she is always happy & uplifted but I liked the fact that Mannat was also shown to be emotional & a good listener because of which she not only understood Nayab’s hardships but also had Nayab confide in her. Nayab did fancy the idea of being with Wajih but she was hesitent considering the background she comes from but Mannat supports her & tells her that she will do what it takes to change Nayab’s life by getting her married to Wajih.

Cheekh Episode 1 Story Review - Decent Introduction

Wajih being the youngest of all three brothers happens to be everyone’s favourite but he definitely has a personality & private life which no one is too aware of. We got a little glimpse of it when Wajih had a conversation with his friends at Haya’s engagement. Well, Yawar has made some strict rules which he wants everyone in his household to abide by & one of those rules are that the female house help will not go to the quarters of male servants in order to serve them food. Yawar did make it pretty clear once again when he got to know that it happened yet again. He wants the ladies of his family to keep an eye on all the girls who work in their house in order to protect them.

Well, the episode ended on a completely different note which no one saw coming. Nayab was pretty disturbed because her father lost his job & asked her to consider one of the proposals of a man double her age who had a daughter too. Nayab seemed pretty disturbed with the idea that her father could even suggest something like this & that is when she goes inside the house to distance herself from the crowd gathered on one of Haya’s functions. Wajih’s friend who showed up drunk was sent inside the house because Wajih dreaded that Yawar might see him & he’ll get upset. Yawar was shown to be going inside of the house as well & a few moments later Nayab fell off the first floor. Now this is the mystery that the rest of the story will revolve around as to who tried to cross the line with Nayab & what actually happened, was she pushed or she jumped in order to to save herself? I have a feeling that it would be Yawar, which will shake the entire  family up as well as turn Mannat’s life upside down, but let’s see.

Overall Execution:

The first episode of Cheekh was decent but it did have some clichés too. The sight of yet another drunk guy in ARY drama was definitely off-putting. The editing seemed a bit too choppy & acting a bit forced at times but the overall direction was decent. Saba Qamar looked amazing but she definitely didn’t look like an age fellow of Ushna or Azekah. All the actors did play their part well. Here’s to hoping that Cheekh being Saba Qamar’s drama will turn out to be good because she happens to be the selling point of this drama for me because I don’t really have high hopes with Zanjabeel Asim Shah & the rest of Balaa cast. Please share your thoughts about the very first episode of Cheekh.

Cheekh Brought Audiences In Tears

0

Cheekh drama has ended with a powerful Message that The universe is based on fair exchange, What you give you will get, so beware and think about once you do something wrong with someone. Today’s main highlight was the last episode it self where twitter is just buzzing with cheekh trending on the top. Fahad Mustafa shared the screen shot of its trending with tagging all of his team from directors to actors. Imran Ashraf Awan praised acting of Bilal Ashraf and Saba Qamar. Mawra also praised both Bilal and Saba for steller performances. Public is going gaga over the expressions of Saba Qamar. Many of the people especially mentioned Aijazz Aslam for his spot on acting of a helpless man trying to help his brother but not being able to.

IMG 20190811 030046

Shabbir Jan as Aqil zada, tried to grip over the case till the time it was best possible for him but Saba’s character didn’t lose its grip today she was completely outstanding with being Mannat. Nayyar Aijazz was best throughout with his negative vibes and acting. Azekah Daniel portrayed her charachter of grieved sister perfectly, the way she cried too stole the show. Shariq was also too good with his crying that we cried with him.

IMG 20190811 030105

On YouTube the audiances have praised the ending and everyone said Bilal Abbas and Saba Qamar were best together we cried for both, even the last scenes of Bilal Abbas made us cry.Over all last episode was full of emotions and feelings where one has lost everything in the love of her friendship and the other has destroyed his family in the fear of saving his criminal self. Both weren’t ready to surrender and in this war of justice, truth prevailed and justice was served. Our favorite Actors did justice to each and every character, cheekh was the drama that started with the same hype and ended with the same hype because story didn’t lose grip yes it went unjustified when everything went against Mannat but last episode proved  to be best and ended with lesson.

Characters we want and characters we don’t want to see!

0

There are certain characters in dramas which are the most annoying ones. They irritate the viewers till the last episode but the worst part is that we have to see them in each and every drama! Here are some of the examples of such characters:

1. The cunning Bhabi!
This Bhabhi would hate her mother-in-law from the core of her heart for no apparent reason. She would not let her sister-in-law come to visit her house and would keep persuading her husband to buy another house because his ammi has made her life miserable! The only reason this character exists is so mother-in-laws can never trust their daughter-in-laws.

2. The conspiracy specialist Saas and Nand!
These two will always fill their son’s/brother’s ears with hateful speech for the bahoo and he would shout at his wife, hit her and even divorce her for them. Disgusting!

3. The bored and dominating husband!
All he wants for his wife is to bow down to him and stand attentive before him, ready for his every command. She cannot have any interests for herself and even though she works so hard all day, looking after him and his family, he will never cease to complain what a stupid woman she is and how bored he is of her. If she is a working woan, he will definitely not cooperate with her and flirt with other women.

4. The evil sister!
All of her life, this character will never spare her sister of her nasty tactics and will ruin her sister’s wedding, steal her husband, torture her nephews and nieces and then suddenly, she will start to hate the husband she snatched from her sister.

5. The roti dhoti aurat!
This character needs no description. She can be seen in every drama. Let go of her people!

6. The hopeless romantic!
This character can be male or female. The person they love will get married to someone else, and obeying Newton 3rd law of motion that every action has an equal and opposite reaction, they will cut their wrist or hang themselves. Our media should really stop promoting suicide, that too for a girl or boy.

Now that the negative ones have been taken care of, let’s move to the characters we really want to see.

1. A humble and caring Maulvi/ religious scholar:
Aperson who is a Maulvi but not the typical type shown in our dramas but more like Maulvi Subhanllah in Pyaray Afzal.

2. A patriot:
A person who loves his/her country Pakistan from the core of his heart. The story may be set before partition of the subcontinent, before separation of East Pakistan or in present time when Pakistan is facing so many problems. He/she can be an adamant social worker, a police officer and even a housewife who trains her ignorant children and grow love of their country in their heart.

3. A detective or a secret agent:
He/she would fight the crime and corruption in Pakistan. They would fight anyone who threatens their country.

4. A psychopath:
I know we have had enough psychos in Kadurat and Mein deewani but what we want to see is a psychopath who witnessed a horrible incident in his childhood(any incident except the sighting of his evil stepmother please :P) and kills people. The hero would uncover his tracks and hand him over to law enforcement.

5. A director:
A director who has to direct a drama set in a place far away from settlements, in a house(haweli) everyone claims is haunted but he does not stop because he wants the perfect location for his drama. Then all of the members of his crew get stuck in that house and have to fight their way out. The story would be even better if the actual history of that house is shown.

6. The archaeologist:
A person who goes to archaeological sites like pyramids. He encounters a supernatural being over there and then has to struggle ta save himself from it.

7. The bright student:
Yes! I want a drama based on college life but not on the romance in college life! Not at all!
I want this bright student to be shown studying and making projects. His/her daily life should be shown. The plot should be based on friendship.

So how will you like these character? Kindly tell me what you think about these roles and leave me a comment.

Character Uniforms

I live outside of Pakistan and am a fan of Pakistani dramas. It is usually hard for me to watch the dramas when they air weekly, so I usually binge-watch them. Binge-watching results in strange observations. These observations makes otherwise ignorable details pretty obvious, and hard to ignore. Once, you notice a certain pattern, and then you just keep noticing it.

I recently watched Main Bushra and Dooriyan ( after reading Kanwal Murtaza’s review). I noticed a certain pattern in both of them, the main character wore the same style clothes to get into the character. It seems like that typical style of clothing, where the dress is stitched exactly in a certain style is somehow the uniform of the character. Let’s start with Main Bushra,

Here Bushra is listening to her parents fight over the money….

mb

Here Bushra is standing next to her mother after telling off an annoying neighbor.

mb

Bushra got a job interview letter and is smiling.

mb

Bushra at her job interview.

mb

By that time, I was pretty annoyed by the same stitching of all of her dresses. Well, guess what? one of Bushra’s sisters tried to run away but got caught. That sister was taking Bushra’s dress in her bag to the wonderland she was planning to go. Bushra’s father woke up, and stopped the escape. Now since Bushra always wear the same style of clothing, father concluded that it was actually Bushra who was trying to run away. What other evidence would you ever need? Bushra’s life became even more troublesome. It was after marriage that Bushra started wearing dresses of other designs.

In Dooriyan, Faisal Rehman played the character of Daniyal. I liked the play. Although it was a typical story, the direction and acting made the play interesting. In the play, Daniyal was a good man from the middle class and worked really hard to provide for his family. His wife did not value what she had and their marriage had many problems. Now we have to understand that Daniyal was saving money to build a house, that’s why he wore the same jeans for 10 years. He wore it everywhere. Lets check this out.

Here he is wearing jeans at work, and was about to tell his colleague that his wife is expecting their first child.

d

Solving problems of his colleague in the same jeans.

d

Coming home, all mad after talking with his father to sabaq sikhaying his wife, because she has negotiated with his father to do some dishonorable thing (note still in the same jeans).

d

Socializing at the office.

d

This socialization resulted in a fight at home. Now waiting for Wife’s decision to leave, note the first born is now 7 years old. Still wearing the jeans.

d

Now crying over wife’s decision of leaving him in the same jeans, next to a framed picture in the same jeans.

d

Dooriyan was an engaging drama despite being a typical story and having a very distracting pair of jeans. I liked the non-linear story line, but somehow I got carried away with Faisal Rehman’s jeans. This one-pant wonder tried very hard to save his home but things did not work out. The directions were great and the young man playing Faisal Rehman’s son did a great job. Give it a try.

Did you guys ever notice some thing like a typical stitching or dress pattern for any character in a drama? Please share your thoughts. I just thought that was funny.

Sincerely

F. Kazmi

Changing Television – Remembering Shehnaz Sheikh

Changing Television - Remembering Shehnaz Sheikh

The entertainment service of Pakistan has exponentially grown to become the bigger slice of the pie that illustrates the media industry. Our dramas have come a long way since the golden era of PTV in the late 1960s to the 1980s, the career graph of each and every actor varying its way across the axis and taking peaks or plummeting down; yet there are certain things that haven’t changed at all, and probably won’t even in the future either.

The video that has recently resurfaced and posted below features Shehnaz Sheikh’s appearance in the talk show ‘Yes Sir No Sir’  hosted by the late Moin Akhtar. This was one of her few last appearances on television before leaving the industry for good, along with moving to Lahore when she did.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jNpCdVBIyw&list=LLM0nG1wb9vwW_3SA715zBBQ&index=6

Shehnaz Sheikh was a brilliant actress of her time and was widely acclaimed for her two most popular dramas Tanhaiyan (1985) and Ankahi (1982); both successful shows and loved till date. And although the setting was based on the times of the 80s, the actress flaunted the idea of a compassionate, independent woman who wished to support her family by working in an era when the practice was considered estranged. She was widely praised by critics and caught the eye of Raj Kapoor who offered her the role of heroin in the Indian movie Henna (1991), but which, to the general surprise of audiences and professionals, she blatantly refused.

Changing Television - Remembering Shehnaz Sheikh

The reason behind her turning down the role, as stated in the video, was the fact that the actress simply disliked and was exceedingly tired of the slander and character defamation that came with the profession of acting. Shehnaz believed that a film actress would be even more as a subject of interest when it comes to besmirching. Even as she ended her note of presence on the show, she made a statement towards PTV regarding this:

“I think that PTV should offer protection for its employees, especially women performers, against anything that has been said or written regarding them, which is scandalous and might affect their personal life or tarnish their reputation…..there are many girls who are willing and wish to work in the entertainment industry, but are held back by their parents permission due to these circumstances….if this is not done, then sooner or later, no girl belonging to any respectable family would be seen working on-screen.”

Changing Television - Remembering Shehnaz Sheikh

It is true, that working in the media, and especially being a famous celebrity amongst the viewers, comes with its disadvantages. The platform of being a celebrated actress is not an easy one to take and has never been. Especially now, that with the progress in technology and expansion of social accounts on applications such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, etc., privacy is all but dead and ‘fake news’ is probably more believed as real than the truthful facts.

Shehnaz always claimed that the absence of new challenges that came with performing and lack of diverse characters being portrayed in serials made up the huge chunk of her influential decision to leave acting. And this is true. In the video, Shehnaz claimed that:

“….in our industry, unless someone plays the role of depressed and wallowing being, who cries repeatedly, she will never be considered a good actress..comedians are considered as something of a court jester..”

This is pretty much more or less similar to another quote of an outstanding artist of our time:

“..just like the rest of the world, we are a formula- driven industry…you know, Humsafar changed everything; people in masses, from all classes were watching television like never before. Now at this time, I feel, that the TV industry, should have said, okay. We’ve got the eyeballs. Let’s change things. And you know what we did? Unfortunately, we replicated the formula.” – Mahira Khan, Faiz International Festival 2016.

Changing Television - Remembering Shehnaz Sheikh

Familiarity. Repetition.  It’s what highly saturates pretty much every plot line of the dramas televised on our screens and what more or less sums up the aforementioned quote. The dominating husband lashing out every bit of anger and absurd act of abuse onto his poor pitiful wife (who has to pull off the pretty face especially while weeping) until she finally decides to leave him; only to marry another man who is, fortunately, much more handsome, rich and successful, as well as willing to accept the child that’s not even his own. Let’s stretch this out into words and tears and screams onto a canvass of scripts for 24 episodes and the ratings are in the bag.

This is exactly what Shehnaz Sheikh was pointing the finger at. Doing the same roles over and over again tends to make it tiresome for actors and audiences alike. Previously dramas included a number of characters, each of whom played an important role and were indispensable and unforgettable in their own ways. Whether it was the solemn hero, or the stubborn heroine, the comedic sidekick or the aggravated old aaya; in spite of having one significant attribute were able to pull off every emotion most convincingly and magnificently. Most dramas today only tend to cast people who might be conceived as being good looking but fail to act and live up to the expectations of the viewers.

Even after 30 years of Tanhaiyan, television now tries to discredit working women as being less honorable and seems to conceptualize the idea of them working outside their homes as alienation. The use of inappropriate jokes and phrases has become a common norm within comedy plays, which makes them an explicit watch for children. Earlier on, shows like Ainak Wala Jin and Alif Laila were adored by kids who not only differentiated between the good and bad morals of life but were affiliated with their own national language and culture.

Changing Television - Remembering Shehnaz Sheikh

The potential within our country is exuberant and abundance in nature. The only thing required is to make use of it and rather than following the safe path of making predictable shows, it’s time we deviate from the commonality so as to take risks. There have been certain reformations where now dramas are being made to tackle societal issues such as the rights of transgenders or honor killings or rape. Some plays have casted women as being strong-willed and ambitious in their career. Let’s try to encourage them. The odds are in our favor, for our industry is nearly at its peak and has a brilliant crowd of performers that are internationally acknowledged for their work. If we play our cards right, then consequentially, we will be able to reap benefits that are both economically and socially desirable, or lose another gem of the industry as we did some 37 years ago.

I got time to think about myself, I know that he’s there to take care of three of them. I’m really very grateful.”

“I miss her (Aiman), it was not easy for me after she got married but I knew I had to adjust to this change. If I did not accept this change then things would have been very difficult for Aiman. I did it for her because here I have my family but for her everyone and everything is new.”

Minal Khan said that Aiman Khan was really good at managing things therefore as long as she was not married, Minal Khan didn’t have to play the role of the responsible adult in the house. Minal also shared that it was not easy for her to change her role in the house after Aiman left but she knew that she had to do it. She said,

“I became extremely emotional on the day Aiman came home for the first time after her wedding. My reaction was that of aggression and I was over reacting to everything. Aiman was the one who made everyone understand what I was going through. That is when I realized I had to be strong because if Aiman could be so strong even though she was the one who started a new life, why couldn’t I do the same.”

Change in timings of dramas on Saturday evening at ARY Digital

8:00 PM is considered a premier slot for entertainment channels since old days of PTV when drama considered as prime television entertainment is aired. Following the tradition of PTV, current generation of private satellite channels schedule their best dramas for 8 PM time slot. Normally if a drama gets low TRP, it is shifted to 9:00 PM time slot.

Some two and a half months ago ARY Digital started two new dramas for Saturday evening named Goyaa and Dil Nahin Maantaa for 8 PM and 9 PM time slots respectively. Goyaa is relatively different from a routine formula drama, while Dil Nahin Maanta is the same evergreen successful formula story of one husband sandwiched in two wives.

Surprisingly from upcoming Saturday, ARY Digital has swapped the time slot of both dramas; i.e. now Goyaa at 9 PM and Dil Nahin Maantaa at 8 PM.

The drama is airing daily on Hum TV. Well, fans of Ayeza Khan and Danish Taimoor are loving the drama, however, a large number of audiences is saying that this drama is just another Ramadan drama. They are missing and recalling Suno Chanda and Chupke Chupke. One social media user wrote, “People who already watched Suno Chanda and Chupke Chupke won’t like these new shows that much. Those dramas were greatest comedy dramas. No ramzan drama can match their level”. Another social media user stated, “All though I haven’t watched the whole episode but I have watched a few clips on Instagram and Ayeza Khan as a doctor is giving me very funny vibes, she could not showcase the character, doctors are never like this, at least, she needs to learn how to act like a doctor, it has forced comedy and regular dialogues. I think Sehar Khan’s acting is much better than her in Fairy Tale. New faces have a lot of potential but they are given so much less projects like over hyped super stars”. Well another social media user said, “In the series all characters were trying hard to make people laugh, sadly, they are unsuccessful. It was very dissappointing. Best was Suno Chanda”. A social media user said, ‘we are not being able to connect with these new characters or maybe we have grown older now”, the social media user was missing Chupke Chupke and Hum Tum. While replying to a criticism comment, Saima Akram Chaudhry announced that it is her last Ramadan play:

Chand Tara Cast Criticized For Doing Iftar in Indian Style Thali

0

Ramadan festivities are at full swing in Pakistan and other Muslim countries. Well, Muslim across the world are arranging amazing Iftar and Suhoor parties and dinners. Pakistani actors also love to arrange the Iftar parties on the sets of their dramas. Recently a lavish Iftari was served on the set of Ramadan drama Chand Tara. Well, the Iftar was served in Indian style. South Indian food was served in Indian style Thalis. Have a look at the video which was shared by Hum TV’S Instagram page:

Well, the flexing and promotion of Indian cuisine wasn’t appreciated by the fans. Fans were of the view that they could have served Pakistani dishes instead of this authentic South Indian food. One social media user wrote, “What are they showing??? Is it our culture?, Also women are sitting uncovered, eating in the Indian style Thalis”. Almost everyone was angry after seeing the South Indian cuisine served in a pure Indian style. One Instagram user wrote, “Why they are having iftar party in hindu style? Totally two opposite things and please don’t make it as a cultural thing, it is purely a religious thing and it cannot be the same like others. Stop showing these nonsense on tv. What you guys are trying to do. Leaving our culture language dressing and now this. Shame on you guys. Why can’t we promote our own beautiful culture so it stays with our new generation also. So sad. May Allah be with us and keep us on the straight path. Ameen”. Almost everyone called the team out for obeying Indian cultural norms happily. Have a look at the comments:

A part from that, many social media users said that the cuisine is Indian but the way they are celebrating Iftari is totally wrong because it’s the time of dua as Allah accepts dua at this time and women should cover head and men and women should pray.
