Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy never fails to make us proud and has received many awards till date. Her recent film, the sequel of 3 Bahadur was a massive hit and she is yet again all set to pull our emotional strings with a strong yet motivating film. Sharmeen has earlier highlighted social issues of Pakistan and has made documentaries which worked towards the woman empowerment, this time she will highlight yet another sensitive era and that is labour community. Her new project will revolve around the labour community of Pakistan. The first look of the film was released on Sharmeen’s official Facebook page.
Sharmeen Obaid, the woman who won Oscars twice and made her mark, is all set to go for yet another unique project. Her new project “home1947” revolves around the Indo-Pak independence stories. The name holds immense significance as it depicts what home meant to people of the time and how the two nations living together were like.
“People know me for my political and social work, but in 2007, I thought of this idea and thanks to the Manchester international festival I was given this opportunity to showcase this here in Manchester for 9 days, an unmissable experience for those who want to experience what their families have gone through during the partition, and how they have lived, felt, survived during that period.”
“The idea is unique as it’s not only reflecting the partition, but also all those people who have lost their homes and can’t go back to their homes. The project in itself will bring people from different races and colours to experience what people have gone through during the partition,”
This is what Sharmeen told the media as she explained what her new project holds. She, furthermore said:
“My main motive is to preserve the history of 1947, we are into 70 years of our independence so we don’t have enough people who have experienced partition, so the idea is to either film or write down the personal experiences of those who have seen or experienced partition. Those nations who don’t preserve their history always struggle to find their true identity, so this project will help in preserving our history and acknowledge our true history. I would also love to showcase this project in other countries especially India and Pakistan so more people can come forward with their stories.”
Sharmeen’s new project will project the idea of largest migration ever witnessed 70 years ago and how how difficult it was for people of the time to leave what they called “home”. The best part that will add spark to the documentary is that the two most talented singers ( Sanam Marvi and Harshdeep Kaur) from Pakistan and India will be performing together for the first time ever in the opening scene of “Home1947”.
SOC Films is launching Aagahi – Apnay Mustaqbil Ki to mark international women’s day, 2017.
Aagahi means awareness and it aims to educate women about their rights in Pakistan.
In the next 12 months, SOC films will release a series of videos in Urdu and other regional languages which will explain and clarify the legislations affecting women and how the legal provisions can be applied.
The series will answer many questions like how to file an FIR, what does the law state on instances of rape, sexual harassment, divorce and inheritance and what is the procedure for reporting issues like these and who should be approached for help.
Other topics include forced marriage, divorce rights, inheritance rights, domestic violence, sexual harassment and acid and cybercrimes.
“I have travelled the length and breadth of Pakistan and one thing that has always struck me is that we women know very little about the rights that we have in this country. We have little understanding of the court system and how to navigate it and aren’t always aware of the ways we can protect ourselves,” said Sharmeen. “This is why SOC Films has collaborated with the Women’s Action Forum and undertaken the project Aagahi through a series of videos, which we aim to disseminate for free, across Pakistan. We hope to educate women about their rights and how they can assert them.”
The series is in collaboration with women’s action forum. Aamina Sheikh’s voice has been used for the series.

Sonya Hussyn appeared on Yasir Hussain’s The After Moon Show in 2018. During the rapid fire segment of the show, Yasir asked Sonya that if she was Mahira Khan which film of hers she would have not done? To which Sonya replied that she wouldn’t have done Raees as she has no interest of playing a sidekick character to Shah Rukh Khan.
Recently the two-time Oscar winning director Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy has lashed out at Sonya Hussyn for bringing down Mahira Khan in context for signing the Bollywood movie Raees opposite Shah Rukh Khan.
