Two time academy award winner Pakistani filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is making it to the news headlines yet again after scoring an award for ‘Best Documentary‘ at the 38th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards for ‘A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness’.
The award ceremony was held at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City on Thursday.
The documentary primarily revolves around a girl who survived an honour killing attempt from her own family and lived to tell the tale. The documentary got nominated for three different categories including Best Documentary, Outstanding Short Documentary and Outstanding Music and Sound.
On winning the award Sharmeen Obaid said the following:
“It is an honour for my team to win the Emmy for best documentary! A Girl in the River started a discourse about honour killings in Pakistan but there is a lot of work still to be done and we are committed to continuing our advocacy.”
Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy has previously won Oscars for ‘Saving Face’ and ‘A Girl in the River’ and an Emmy for ‘Children of Taliban’.

The Green Entertainment soap serial Sharakat has wrapped up its 90-episode run, but the final moments have ignited a fierce debate among viewers, particularly over the fate of the central characters. Directed by Sami Sani and written by Nuzhat Suman, the drama, produced by Tehreem Chaudhary (Multiverse Entertainment), centered on the tumultuous life of a young man who enters into a second marriage. There was a panel discussion at the Islamabad Literature Festival between Fasi Zaka, Ali Aftab, George Fulton, and Nadeem Paracha. Nadeem repeatedly referred to Shaniera as ”Wasim Akram’s wife” to which a woman from the audience shouted,” She has a name”. Nadeem got little embraced in front of everyone.

Ki Jana has been written and composed by Shani Arshad and produced by Fizza Ali Meerza. Direction has been given by Nabeel Qureshi and the song stars Sonya Hussyn as the lead while Mohsin Abbas Haider appears for a small cameo.

Tere Bin was a massive blockbuster drama serial, written by Nooran Makhdoom and directed by Siraj-ul-Haq which featured the powerful pairing of Wahaj Ali and Yumna Zaidi. The drama captivated audiences across borders, trending consistently on social media and achieving record-breaking viewership on YouTube. Its original soundtrack (OST) also gained immense popularity, becoming a key factor in the drama’s overall success. However, it was later revealed that the tune of the OST was heavily inspired by Bollywood’s famous song ‘Thukra Ke Mera Pyar Mera Inteqam Dekhegi’ after which Zee Music claimed copyright strike until the issue was legally resolved between Har Pal Geo & Zee Music.
Recently, Shani Arshad, the composer and singer opened up about the allegations of copying the Bollywood tune.
Talking about it, Shani Arshad said, “There has been a very heinous accusation that I copied Tere Bin from a certain Bollywood song. Both are completely different songs, but I don’t know why it happens in Pakistan and India that some people are always ready to point out others’ mistakes. They listen only to find which song resembles another, and unfortunately, others take benefit from it. First, someone commented that it resembled a particular song, and then others followed, which benefitted them too. Tere Bin was a massive hit, which India couldn’t bear, and they started alleging that Pakistan copied an Indian song. That’s why the OST was blocked on YouTube, and a few episodes were also restricted. Now the song is on Zee Music as well, and they have credited me. Had it really been a copy, they would have never uploaded it on Zee Music with proper credits”. Here is the link to the video:
