Sabaat Last Episode Story Review – Anything Is Possible

It did not come as a surprise that Sabaat had a predictable and typical ending. All this time, the writer wanted the story to end happily for Hassan and Anaya but their happiness was completely dependent on Miraal. I found Harris’ love for Miraal more endearing (quite unexpectedly) than Hassan’s casual apology. The writer gave Miraal so much power right till the end that all the other characters lost their meaning altogether. Miraal clearly had a personality disorder yet this aspect of her character was brushed under the carpet. Her negative and controlling behavior was never portrayed as a mental disorder even though she went to a psychiatrist! The way her character took a completely different turn basically went to show that there was no actual reason for Miraal’s negativity and bitterness.

The writer conveniently gave a fairytale-like ending to a story that was meant for a mature and intelligent audience. Even fairytales nowadays are being given a more meaningful treatment by the makers since no one wants to watch stories surrounding black and white characters with quick fixes in the end.

Everything Changed In Minutes

Right till the end, Atif continued to be the ‘messenger’; he was the one who informed Hassan about Miraal’s accident which was really odd. Miraal’s condition suggested that she had been in the hospital for at least a few hours yet somehow Hassan’s parents did not even inform him. Atif had to look for him to break the news. This accident and its aftermath were covered in a rush suggesting that after slowing things down for so many weeks, the writer wanted a jhat pat ending to the drama which was overall quite predictable. Miraal’s punishment started few seconds into the episode and Harris became the ‘hero’ instantly. Miraal had forgotten naani altogether, only to be reminded of her when the accident happened. Given how negative and bitter Miraal was, this sudden change in her despite her situation did not work for me at all.

Sabaat Last Episode Story Review – Anything Is Possible

Someone like Miraal would have taken a lot more time to ‘confess’ to her wrongdoings. The writer chose an easy way to bring about this change instead of relying on more meaningful scenarios to show a gradual change in her. There are in reality so many people like Miraal who never realize that they have been punished no matter how many times they find themselves in situations such as this one. If we consider her personality, her first reaction would have been that of anger and extreme bitterness. Had the writer shown her as someone who was capable of seeing things from another perspective, this sudden change would have made more sense. The writer definitely put plot convenience before logic and used this accident as a means to dramatically change the character which destroyed everyone’s life. So in the end, a change in Miraal changed everything which basically proves that the entire story always revolved around Miraal and all the other tracks were completely dependent on her.

Many of us were expecting Anaya’s track to be more impactful since it was the only character in the last few episodes which had potential. Anaya however went back to being the diligent wife and bahu who was still looking for her in-law’s approval! This track had endless possibilities considering how capable Anaya was but in the end, she chose to forgive rather quickly and lead the life she was leading when she got married initially.

Final Remarks

This ‘overly’ pleasant and fast-paced episode of Sabaat made me wonder if this really was the last episode of the drama which had so much negativity! The writer proved one thing, anything is possible especially in the last episode of a Pakistani drama. This turned out to be yet another drama which showed an evil female lead who kept on making everyone’s life hell for 20 plus weeks and underwent a complete transformation in the end. Mawra Hocane’s performance was remarkable throughout even though there were times when Anaya’s character disappointed. Ameer Gillani gave this character his best; I will be looking forward to his next project. Anaya’s mother’s positive outlook towards life and her bond with her daughter was the best part of an otherwise disappointing drama. There was absolutely no need to kill Anaya’s father, the writers really need to stop doing that! His death did not have any impact on the story and it did not serve any purpose. The writer proved that it is possible to give even the most twisted of situations a last-minute happy ending like nothing bitter ever happened! Even though I loved Mawra and Ameer’s performances, I did not find myself rooting for the couple given the circumstances. Sabaat’s OST was beautifully written, composed and sung, that is definitely worth listening to on repeat. Other than that, I am glad that this journey is over!

I would like to thank all those wonderful readers who took the time out to read the reviews and shared their feedback regularly. I continued watching and reviewing this drama because of you!

Sabaat Episode 9 Story Review – Love Wins

Tonight’s episode of Sabaat was slightly better than last week. Unlike last week, there were some emotional scenes and it was good to see Hasan’s mother stepping up. For the first time, I liked Hasan and Anaya’s interactions. The scene covering Hasan and Anaya’s emotional conversation in the university was well acted out. The characters so far are one-dimensional and shallow, their conflicts also remain the same. The story also lacks flow. It is at times difficult to take these conflicts seriously because of the way they have been presented on screen. The most important aspect of Miraal’s track is how she is gradually losing her mind yet it is really difficult to relate to the challenges she is facing in this regard. I have to say that Sabaat has the worst background score. However, every episode is visually pleasing, the production values are grand but the story still hasn’t taken off yet.

Anaya Changes Her Mind

Tonight’s episode focused a great deal on Anaya and Hasan’s track. Hasan’s mother went to Anaya’s house again and she managed to convince Anaya’s mother. After a long time, Hasan interacted with someone from his family candidly when he asked his mother about her visit to Anaya’s house. Hasan played his part by reassuring Anaya of his love and making her realize how miserable they would be without each other.

Sabaat Episode 9 Story Review - Love Wins

I absolutely loved how openly Anaya shared all this with her parents. Their relationship never disappoints and continues to be the most realistic element of this drama. Even after everything Miraal said to Anaya, she decided she wanted to spend the rest of her life with Hasan. This goes to show that Anaya has faith in Hasan and the love they share. Seemi Raheel and Muhammad Ahmed are absolutely adorable as the parents who love their daughter unconditionally and are open-minded. Their characters are refreshing and the performances are on point.

Later on, when Anaya’s parents went to Hasan’s house, their apprehension and fear were translated brilliantly on-screen by these amazing actors. They could obviously sense that Hasan’s father was not present there out of choice. Meeting Miraal was another shock for them, she made sure she made up for the absence of her father.

Sabaat Episode 9 Story Review - Love Wins

Miraal Manipulates and Threatens

Miraal has constantly been manipulating her father and she did just that in this episode as well. The way her father lets her get away with everything is basically a lesson in bad parenting! The only reason her father is not being flexible is that he does not want to ‘disappoint’ his daughter. Although he had his mind made up before but after the way, Miraal reacted he felt duty-bound to do what pleased her. She definitely knows how to pull his strings. Tonight, there were yet again many scenes which showed how manipulative Miraal was and when things don’t go the way she wants, she threatens and provokes others.

For a change, the viewers got to hear what Miraal was going through from her. I find it really difficult to understand her state of mind since even with all this confusion in her head, she manages to look so trim and proper, makes sure she keeps track of what Hasan is up to, and manages to be so troublesome. I am waiting for the time when all this will take a toll on her because being Miraal must be really exhausting!! Sarah Khan looked really pretty tonight but there are times when it seems like she is not too comfortable carrying this look. She performed well tonight but so far the character itself doesn’t have much going for it. All I can think of while watching her is that she needs to get a life!

Sabaat Episode 9 Story Review - Love Wins

Hasan’s father’s business rival it seems is going to use his friend to perhaps rope in Hasan or to get some other advantage. His track, it seems is crucial to the story yet he is not getting enough screen time. Most of the characters in the drama are black and white which is another reason why they are not too appealing.

Final Remarks

After watching this episode, I was hoping that Hasan and Anaya will finally get married now and we can all move on but the preview of the next episode suggested that there will be more of Miraal and her father’s unreasonable tantrums and demands before this marriage actually takes place. Usman Mukhtar, it seems will also make an appearance at the wedding, that could be the reason why it is being delayed!

Sabaat Episode 8 Story Review – Lackluster

This was yet another average episode of Sabaat. Although this drama has only been on air for 7 weeks, there is already so much repetition. I was hoping that Sabaat will take off now but even with some tangible development in this episode, some of the dialogues yet again were plain and the story seems to be going around in circles! Can we please move to the next phase, if there is such a phase that is! There were so many scenes tonight that added nothing new to the story. Watching Miraal telling her fiancé off was never ‘interesting’ but it is getting even more boring with every passing episode.

Miraal’s personality has been well-established by now, the scenes that were shown tonight gave no further insight into her character. Every episode of Sabaat has more or less the same scenes, there is nothing new about the locations or the information these scenes give. Ameer Gillani’s performance tonight in some of the scenes was the best so far. Mawra Hocane also acted superbly and I am glad she has sported a look in this drama which is well-suited for the character she is playing. Anaya’s parents’ scenes continue to be the highlight of every episode. The leading characters do not have the kind of charm which these two supporting characters have. Seemi Raheel and Muhammad Ahmed’s realistic performances add to the beauty of these scenes.

Hasan and Anaya

Tonight’s episode opened with Hasan trying to understand why Anaya’s parents rejected the proposal. Thankfully this misunderstanding was not prolonged but even then there were quite a few scenes that could easily have been chopped down. Anaya’s conversations with her friends are always so plain and their scenes together are most often used as filler scenes. Hasan and Anaya both completed their studies and Anaya topped in her batch. Yet, she was not the least bit excited and she was heartbroken. In fact, she did not even know that she had secured the top position, that was so illogical! Anaya was upset because she made a wrong decision because of which her parents were humiliated. Miraal was ecstatic because this is what she always wanted. Her character is getting more annoying and shallow with every passing episode! The ‘layers’ I was hoping to see are clearly nowhere to be found.

Hasan decided to go to Anaya’s house and that is when he found out what actually happened. I was hoping to see Anaya’s track going in a different direction but her parents want her to get married. Eventually, perhaps she will end up getting married to Hasan but honestly speaking I don’t find myself rooting for these two. The characters and the track is just not appealing enough. Anaya’s scenes with her parents were sweet and heart-warming as usual.

Sabaat Episode 8 Story Review - Lackluster

Hasan’s mother managed to stop him from leaving the house and finally she decided to put her foot down. It is good to see her finally contributing to the story even though her dialogues were not the least bit impressive. This particular development made perfect sense.

More of Miraal’s Narcissism

Miraal’s scenes tonight showed once again how her moods changed depending on what her parents decided about Anaya and Hasan. When she was sure that Anaya was out of Hasan’s life for good, she was ecstatic. Later on, when her father came to tell her that he had to show some flexibility, she started getting nightmares again. Whatever nani said to her clearly suggested that basically it all boiled down to having things her way, nothing more and nothing less.

Miraal’s mother rightly pointed out that her father had contributed to making her the twisted person she was now. Even when he agreed to accept Anaya as Hasan’s wife, he was not willing to go to Anaya’s house. He also thought that he needed to get his daughter’s approval. Miraal’s father has definitely failed to play the role which a father should be playing in the house. He has created a monster. If anything, this track basically shows that parents who go out of their way to please their children make a huge mistake. Children need boundaries and if they get ‘addicted’ to having things their way all the time then they grow up to be like Miraal. Having said that, the way Miraal’s state of mind has been shown on-screen is not entertaining or engaging in any way.

Sabaat Episode 8 Story Review - Lackluster

“Jo mera raaz nahi rukh sakta wo mujhe kya rakhe ga” was one of the many dialogues tonight which affected the overall impact different scenes had. Sarah Khan’s entire look for this drama is clearly well-thought-out. There are times when she looks a little too perfect. Even in the more casual scenes, she is wearing more make-up than is necessary. I really hope there is a good reason why we are being shown that Miraal wants to get Anaya killed! She must be really crazy to do something like that. I am also waiting to see when she will get rid of Ali for good because surely someone like her shouldn’t be holding on to someone she cannot stand!

Final Remarks

With every passing episode, I am losing hope that this drama will offer anything grand in the upcoming episodes. Tonight’s episode of Sabaat was visually pleasing as usual but the characters do not have the impact or the appeal which would make this drama more interesting and intriguing. The preview of the next episode showed Hasan’s mother going to Anaya’s house with the proposal.

Sabaat Episode 7 Story Review – The Rejection

Finally an episode with some interesting developments and quite a few scenes which suggested that the drama will now be moving forward to the next phase. The characters continue to be one-dimensional, their journeys, however, might be slightly more interesting now that there has been a major clash of values. The background score yet again was too loud and unnecessary at times. All the scenes, however, contributed something new to the story. I am waiting to see more variations in the characters, hopefully in the upcoming episodes.

Anaya Says Yes But….

The whole ‘blackmailing track’ was used to make Anaya fall in love with Hasan. Although she already liked him, everything that Hasan did to help her out in this episode and the previous one definitely leads Anaya to make her final decision. Mawra Hocane was convincing as the girl who was in love and ready to settle down. I am glad that the writer has shown that a girl who wants to be independent is not averse to the idea of getting married. A girl can get married and pursue her dreams at the same time. Anaya and Hasan yet again proved to be rather immature because they did not think things through. I really liked the scene in which Anaya told her mother about Hasan. Anaya’s bonding with her parents has been the best aspect of this drama. Their scenes are always realistic and all the actors involved share remarkable on-screen chemistry. That is the reason why it would have been so much better if Anaya’s father was in the picture too when she disclosed this news. A heart-to-heart talk with her parents, especially her father prior to their meeting with Hasan’s parents should have been shown.

Sabaat Episode 7 Story Review - The Rejection

I was unsure about Hasan’s father until last week since there were times when he appeared to be a reasonable person. However, the way he played games tonight was yet another move that wasn’t well-thought-out. That is the main issue I have with this script, the characters can at times act in ways that doesn’t make a lot of sense. Also, this was the kind of scenario which has been done-to-death in our dramas. Most often we see the boy’s mother doing what Hasan’s father did tonight. Anaya’s father’s reaction made perfect sense, Muhammad Ahmed made this scene really emotional. The handshake was an interesting addition to this scene, it showed the coldness with which Hasan’s father greeted Anaya’s father, something which he felt instantly.

Miraal’s Narcissism

Miraal is definitely a narcissist who isn’t only in love with herself but she constantly feels the need to have things her way. The way her naani’s words came to haunt her repeatedly in this episode also reflected the underline guilt she felt but it wasn’t something she was going to address. Although she kept on thinking about all the warnings her naani gave her, there was absolutely no change in her attitude. On the contrary, she is still on a mission to prove her deceased naani wrong. However, I always feel that there was a need to show more direct interactions between Miraal and her naani, then these flashbacks would have been more impactful.

I hope that as the story progresses Miraal’s state of mind will be explored even more. Self-importance above everything else and lack of empathy are the two most significant traits of a narcissist. The fact that Miraal was willing to kill Anaya to get her out of the way suggested that she really does need professional help. She controls everyone around her and she cannot come into terms with the fact that Hasan has for a change made up his mind about something without her help. Her father’s dialogues when he met Anaya’s parents clearly showed where that mentality came from. Her father is definitely an enabler.

Sabaat Episode 7 Story Review - The Rejection

Miraal’s mother’s apology tonight was a nice surprise since most often she does not have much to say. The mother is a good woman who can clearly see that her daughter and husband are on the wrong track but she is too submissive. This character most often seems like a caricature, unlike Anaya’s parents who have definite personalities and presence.

The writer through Miraal’s conversation with her friend has tried to convey that there has been some change in her personality after her naani passed away but that change cannot really be seen. Apart from the fact that Miraal is lost at times, she is just as self-absorbed and shallow as she was before. Sarah Khan looked really attractive in some of the scenes tonight but her character isn’t turning out to be as appealing as I was hoping it would be.

Final Remarks

This was an entertaining episode overall and there was a major shift in the story. It was however not free of clichés. Hasan will leave his house after finding out what actually happened and then perhaps Miraal’s father will suffer a big loss in the business at some point, that is what the scenes in the office tonight suggested. There must be a reason why the developments in the office are being given so much screen time. The preview of the next episode was intense, I am waiting to see how the story unfolds.

Sabaat Episode 6 Story Review – Pretty Lame

I tuned in to Sabaat yet again this week hoping the story might take a turn for the better. On the contrary, this drama is getting lamer with every passing episode. I feel that the writer took some inspiration from Zindagi Gulzar Hei and Shehr-e-Zaat. Some of the scenarios in this episode were laughable and others left absolutely no impact. The repetition is getting to me already and any scene which adds something new to the story convincingly is a nice change. Unfortunately, there was only one such scene in tonight’s episode. Anaya and Hasan’s track is getting absurd with every passing episode. The screenplay lacks flow and the pace is slow. Sarah Khan revealed something about the story which explains why we are being shown this controlling and paranoid side of Miraal’s character. Even then, the character itself doesn’t have a single appealing factor.

Anaya and Hasan

I was hoping that we would get to see a mature side of Hasan since he was on a ‘mission’ but seems like the only mission Hasan is on right now is marrying Anaya! I have always had a difficult time relating to whatever Hasan is trying to prove but more than ever now this seems like yet another meaningless track in the story. As if Hasan’s stupidities were not enough, Anaya decided to jump on the bandwagon too by coming up with the most ridiculous plan to solve her friend’s problem. Watching an enlightened and sensible girl like her come up with such an illogical plan was highly disappointing. While it is good that Anaya is not being presented as the ‘perfect’ role-model but showing her doing something so foolish wasn’t the best thing to do either! Yet again, a lot of screen time was given to the planning and the execution. It was really frustrating watching how this development was covered, did the writer really think it would have any kind of an impact on the viewers?

This was supposed to be the ‘turning point’ in Anaya and Hasan’s track, the incident which helped Anaya understand how much Hasan loved her. I don’t remember the last time when I watched something so absurd in a serious drama! After all the ‘excessive bleeding’ Hasan walked out of the hospital with that grin on his face. The only thing on his mind was the proposal, Anaya’s attitude, on the other hand, made more sense. Both these characters, however, are still underdeveloped. The only likable element of Anaya’s track is the relationship she has with her parents. Her parents trust her so much and they expect her to be wise therefore it was especially disappointing watching her plan something which was definitely going to get her into trouble.

Sabaat Episode 6 Story Review - Pretty Lame

Hasan and Anaya’s romantic scenes are not working for me at all. I am having a really difficult time taking Hasan seriously and the dialogues are cheesy! Every single conversation Hasan had with all the characters he interacted with in this episode revolved around Anaya! These conversations were the same as every other week – his friend trying to talk him out of it and Miraal showing her disappointment because he no was no longer listening to her! For a change, Hasan and Miraal’s conversation was slightly emotional, thanks to naani’s ghost ;)

Miraal’s Fears

Thankfully there were some scenes tonight that highlighted Miraal’s growing fears. Reading naani’s diary she realized that relationships sometimes fade away with time. There was once again a reference to outer beauty which is something Miraal can relate to since she is shallow enough to take pride in her outer appearance. Miraal’s character is not etched out well and it does not have enough going for it. It seems to be inspired by Falak’s character from Shehr-e-Zaat. The only difference is that while Falak had direct conversations with her naani, Miraal is getting to learn from Naani’s experience by reading her diary. I also felt that Miraal perhaps feels guilty but she is not willing to admit it. She always treated her naani disrespectfully and even now she cannot face her. That is why she told her mother to take her photograph off of the wall. Naani is ‘haunting’ Miraal, an aspect I find funny as well! It would have been nice if naani and Miraal had some of these conversations when she was alive.

Sabaat Episode 6 Story Review - Pretty Lame

It was good to see Miraal’s mother putting her foot down for a change! Their conversation once again showed how much her father had contributed to turning their daughter into a selfish monster. I am still trying to figure out where Miraal and her fiancé’s track is going. Why is someone like Miraal taking so much to make up her mind? Someone like her shouldn’t even think twice before ending her relationship with someone she does not like. Sarah Khan’s performance in tonight’s episode left a lot to be desired. She looked great but her dialogue delivery was not up to the mark.

Final Remarks

Mawra Hocane performed well tonight but her track is gradually losing its appeal. For me, Seemi Raheel was the most pleasant personality in this episode, the only character I could actually relate to! The supporting actors had a significant role to play tonight – Anaya’s friends, the doctor, and the blackmailer – all of them couldn’t act to save their lives! This drama is turning out to be another Aangan unfortunately. There is a great deal of focus on the visuals, the characters are unimpressive, to say the least, and the performances are most often shaky. Even after all these weeks, I have not been able to connect to any of the characters. The preview of the next episode promised more of the same – not looking forward to the ye shadi nahi ho sakti scenario!

Sabaat Drama Cast

Sabaat Episode 5 Story Review – Unimpressive

Sabaat has only been on air for 5 weeks yet I feel like I have been watching this drama for the longest time since it has been tedious sitting through most of the episodes! So far, Sabaat has failed to keep me interested and engaged. The screenplay and the direction both have been unimpressive, the background score has been beyond annoying! Tonight the background score was so loud and inappropriate at times that I had a difficult time sitting through some of the scenes. The writer is taking a lot of time building up the characters and their stories, I have honestly started questioning if it is going to be worth the wait! So far, there is nothing extraordinary about the story or any of the characters. I am already tired of Miraal’s fixation with Hasan and the drama has only started! We have seen many balaas and jhootis recently on our television screens, I was expecting Sarah Khan’s character to be meatier.

Miraal’s Annoying Personality

The opening scene of this episode definitely piqued my interest. I was hoping that Miraal’s track will get more interesting but Miraal, the character, continues to disappoint in more ways than one. The way she entered the office in the previous episode made it look like she was ready to take over the world yet when her father asked her to represent the company in the court’s proceedings, she wasn’t too eager to do so. After the proceedings she complained about Yasir Qureshi’s attitude and she was clearly not in control! Yes! Miraal has just stepped into practical life and it is understandable why she would feel that way but even then her whiny attitude basically proved the famous Urdu saying right ‘apne ghar mei billi bhi sher hoti hei’. Her expressions when she came face-to-face with Yasir and everything she said to her father, later on, revealed another unpleasant side of her personality. The background score when her father was telling her why she needed to supervise this case and the employee’s expressions suggested that he was probably another disloyal member of the company. Or it could just be another case of bad camerawork and inappropriate background score.

Miraal apparently can only exercise her power within the four walls of her house or with people associated directly with her family. Apart from telling the lawyer off, there wasn’t much she did about the situation. She is simply incapable of coming up with better ideas or making well-thought-out conclusions. Miraal’s father is a wise man otherwise but somehow he made some really impulsive decisions in this episode. He trusted his daughter’s judgment more than that of an experienced employee. Asking her to go to the court’s proceedings in the first place was a bad idea considering how childishly she dealt with the whole thing. The ‘saari university pareshan hei us ke behaviour ki waja se’ was one of the few dialogues in this episode which didn’t work for me!

Miraal is turning out to be an egoistic, spoiled, stubborn and rather immature young lady. As a negative character too, she doesn’t have an appeal or an impact. The fact that she would much rather go after Anaya than someone who was disloyal to her father’s company goes to show she really needs to grow up! This character is turning out to be more shallow than I was expecting it to be. Also, the manner in which Sarah Khan translates this character on screen and the way the director covers her scenes, makes it look like this character would have something grand to offer.

Sabaat Episode 5 Story Review - Unimpressive

Well, I am still waiting to find out if this character has more to offer. Miraal definitely looks like the boss lady but she acts like a spoiled brat, nothing more and nothing less. All I can say right now is that I seriously wish the character itself was just as ‘attractive’ as Sarah Khan’s look for this role.

Anaya and Hasan

Hasan proposed Anaya in this episode but only after getting her in and then out of her trouble during their final exam! ‘Ajeeb baat hei jo tumhei chahyeh wo tumhare samne hei lekin tum us se baat bhi nahi kar sakte’ was yet another extremely lame dialogue in this episode. Yes, of course you can’t talk to her because it is not allowed to talk during the exams, something we all learned in kindergarten! I really find such dialogues in this drama odd, they don’t fit into the situations that are being shown at all! And then the sir says ‘mei aap ko bari der se observe kar raha tha’, although she was completely focusing on her answer sheet all along!

Hasan’s dialogues in the scene covering the proposal were well written but these dialogues did not work from me because I find Hasan’s ‘journey’ pointless so far! I am still trying to understand what he is out to prove by not using the luxuries provided to him by his father when he has the opportunity to prove himself by running his father’s business. A change in attitude would have been enough.

Sabaat Episode 5 Story Review - Unimpressive

I was wondering last week, how Anaya will eventually fall for Hasan, well his emotional dialogues and change in thinking did the trick which makes sense. I was expecting Anaya to tell Hasan that marriage was not on the cards at the moment but that didn’t happen. Well, fair enough! I don’t find Hasan’s character appealing but perhaps Anaya does ;) I don’t find myself rooting for these two just yet!

Final Remarks

Hasan and Miraal’s father is the only one who had some meaningful dialogues tonight. He handled Hasan wisely and also gave the right advice to Miraal. Anaya’s scene with her parents was the most heart-warming and realistic in this episode. I love the on-screen chemistry all these actors share. The preview of the next episode suggested Miraal is not yet done with Anaya! Honestly speaking, I am so not looking forward to Miraal’s ‘revenge plan’!

Sabaat Episode 4 Story Review – Lacks Depth

Tonight’s episode of Sabaat covered Miraal’s growing curiosity and her attempt to keep herself busy. Anaya’s opinion about Hasan changed and Hasan is already dreaming about getting married to Anaya because she is ‘different’! Some of the characters are interesting but I must say that I am not too impressed with the dialogues. Even the situations are already getting repetitive. In this episode too there was a lot of focus on Miraal trying to control Hasan’s life. While Hasan’s friend’s undue concern for him makes sense, it is also extremely annoying! Basically, everyone has been shown opposing Hasan’s decision in their own way.

This episode also established the fact that Hasan and Miraal are not close to their mother at all. The only time we saw this family in the same frame was in the first episode! 10 days after the death of her mother, Miraal’s mother was thinking about marrying her children off! That was really odd.

Nirmal’s character did not add anything new to the story, she is another person who does exactly what Miraal wants. Miraal decided to start going to the office regularly yet there wasn’t a single scene in which she either discussed this with her father or one which covered him welcoming her. This was a slow-paced episode of Sabaat, I am waiting for the drama to take off. So far I feel that there is more focus on the visual aspect of the drama. Sarah Khan really should go easy on the make-up where it isn’t needed.

Latest Developments

All the characters got plenty of screen time in tonight’s episode. The opening scene showed a more playful and uncompromising side of Anaya. This is one character that definitely has more going for it than all the others. Mawra Hocane’s portrayal is honest and convincing. Anaya is the only character that actually surprises me at times. Tonight in the bus she told Hasan something entirely different from what I was expecting her to say. This time around though thankfully Hasan did not change his plans based on what Anaya said! Anaya is level-headed and quite likable. I am finding it really hard to connect to Hasan’s ‘journey’ right now. Ameer Gilani is doing the bare minimum and that is just not enough!

Sabaat Episode 4 Story Review - Lacks Depth

Nirmal is another person who reminded Miraal of naani’s younger days. The conversation she had with Miraal was a good way of telling the viewers how close naani was to Miraal when she was younger. Apparently Miraal does not remember much from that time and that could be the reason why she never had that connection with her naani. I am wondering how all those memories were erased from her mind and the only thing she remembered is that naani used to drive. This was one of those conversations which started off well but turned out to be quite meaningless! Ali is back in the picture and both the scenes covering his interactions with Miraal clearly showed that she was fed up with him. Someone like her shouldn’t be waiting so long to call an engagement off and it was also strange watching her dining with the fiancé she cannot stand.

Miraal locked herself in her room after her naani’s death and she has been secretly reading her diary. Unfortunately, there was no new information in this diary. What Miraal read was a repetition of everything naani had been saying to her. I really wish we could move on and I am waiting to find out where all this is leading. The fact that naani was a lot like Miraal has been well established by now.

Hasan and Anaya

Hasan and Anaya’s last day in the university was also the first day when they interacted in a friendly manner. Their conversation on the bus was well written but honestly speaking I am not rooting for this couple just yet! Why would someone like Anaya fall for Hasan? Waiting to find out. The ‘advice’ the professor gave these students was quite lame! I wish this advice was more meaningful and not so plain.

Miraal finally told her parents about Anaya, thankfully her father did not overreact like her. Later on, it was surprising that she made the first move. She is surely not going to be accommodating so easily therefore it remains to be seen what she intends to do. Hasan’s father seems like a sensible man and the actor playing the role has also done justice to it. Anaya’s scene with her father was sweet as usual.

Final Remarks

I must confess that I am especially disappointed with Miraal’s character, it is too shallow so far. Although Hasan is out to prove himself but his journey isn’t as engaging and impactful as it should be, given the circumstances. Ameer Gillani’s overall look and performance both have been quite average. I am wondering how he managed to bag this role. Mawra Hocane has been acting really well throughout. Javeria Kamran also gave a decent performance tonight. I was definitely expecting more from this episode. I am really hoping that we get to see better episodes in the upcoming weeks.

Sabaat Episode 3 Story Review – Confrontations

The first half of this latest episode of Sabaat was fast-paced and relatively more impactful. The story moved forward to the next phase with this episode. My favorite part from tonight’s episode of Sabaat was Anaya’s reaction when Miraal hit her. Although this drama is definitely not free from stereotypes but there is always something in every episode that is unexpected. I do feel however that some of the scenes lose their impact because the dialogues and situations are too plain.

Miraal and Naani

I am glad that Miraal and naani’s confrontations were shown for a reason. It was also good to see that Miraal did not undergo an immediate personality transformation. There are plenty of dramas on air right now in which spoiled girls are shown insulting older people/relatives for no reason. I am however waiting to see how naani’s passing away is going to affect Miraal in the long run. So looking at naani’s pictures made Miraal realize that her naani was right after all. Naani’s interactions with Miraal always suggested that she wanted to bond with her granddaughter yet somehow she never showed Miraal pictures from her younger days to make her realize that she indeed was like her. This was the kind of situation that showed that although the writer had a good idea to connect these two characters but the way it was executed wasn’t exactly convincing.

I wish naani would have been shown trying harder to make Miraal realize that they had a lot in common. Just saying that she could see herself in Miraal simply wasn’t enough. Also, every time I heard her say that, I never thought that she was talking about outer appearances. And if that was included too and she had pictures to prove it then it would have made much more sense if she had sat down with her granddaughter and shared those memories. The fact that looking at her pictures was like a revelation for Miraal did not work for me at all.

Naani finally decided to tell Miraal off and the build-up leading to naani’s death was covered convincingly. It remains to be seen whether Miraal will feel guilty later on or not. Sarah Khan is performing well, it is good to see her playing a character different from the ones she usually plays.

Sabaat Episode 3 Story Review - Confrontations

Anaya and Miraal

I loved Anaya and Miraal’s confrontation especially because Anaya did not stand there quietly and hear Miraal shout at her. The slap was definitely uncalled for but it was because of it that we got to see Anaya’s strong personality. She tried to hit Miraal back and was not intimidated by her. Later on too she wasn’t scared of going alone to Miraal’s house and confronting her. I think Anaya’s track so far is written much more convincingly than that of Miraal. There were no confusions at all, I understood why she did not want to share these details with her parents and the reason why she wanted to go to Miraal’s house was also made clear by her. The scenes with her friends however could have been chopped down.

Miraal could not stand the fact that her brother was influenced by someone other than her. Her confrontation with Anaya showed a much more unsettling side of her personality. Even though she has always been shown as a spoiled brat but I wasn’t expecting her to slap Anaya. Basically, Miraal will do whatever it takes to have her own way! I hope as the story progresses we see other shades of her character as well because so far there is an overdose of negativity there!

Anaya’s character is more balanced. She is the good girl but at the same time she is not afraid of confronting or even hitting someone to pay them back in the same coin. There is a rage in her but unlike Miraal she uses it wisely. Anaya’s relationship with her parents is exactly what most of us want to see in Pakistani dramas. Unlike the parents in Ishqiya, these two can tell if Anaya is disturbed and do not hesitate communicating with their daughter. Mawra Hocane is performing brilliantly so far, Seemi Raheel and Muhammad Ahmed are adorable as the sweet and caring parents. Even though the dialogues are quite plain but these two make them work.

Sabaat Episode 3 Story Review - Confrontations

Final Remarks

Although I am enjoying watching Sabaat and looking forward to the next episode but I feel that so far the story lacks depth. I am wondering if Miraal’s fiancé will make an appearance sometime soon. He should have been shown tonight even though Miraal doesn’t seem to be interested in him anymore.

I haven’t warmed up to Hassan’s track just yet perhaps because he is supposed to be the not-so-attractive character at the moment. Anaya and Hassan’s track is also littered with clichés so far. Ameer Gilani’s performance was not up to the mark in this episode. Although the director added background score to make the Anaya/Hassan scene more impactful but it did not make up for Ameer Gilani’s blank expressions.

Sabaat Episode 27 Story Review – Mediocre

This second last episode of Sabaat had its highs and lows just like all the other episodes of the drama. The timeline was confusing and the script continued to be mediocre. Mawra Hocane and Seemi Raheal were the stars of the show. Anaya’s confusion however was annoying at times. The only ‘surprise’ in this episode was Miraal’s mother’s secret deal with the lawyer. Miraal’s track stayed the same and just like I anticipated it will have a last-minute sudden but befitting tragic ending. Watching Miraal’s negativity along with her shallow personality has been extremely tedious, to say the least! The viewers deserved more than a last-minute accident.

Whoever put together the promo for the last episode, gave away the main elements of the ending which is obviously never a good idea! Sabaat is heading towards an ending which was highly predictable. The only question is whether Hassan will be forgiven or not. The second last episode of a drama is the best time to show some character development but there was none in this episode.

For a change I completely agree with Atif, he said exactly what the viewers wanted to hear when he thought about how twisted Fareed’s children were! If the writer wanted to send a message across through these dialogues, he definitely failed in doing so. These dialogues however were music to my ears. Jahangir’s character was such a pleasant addition to the drama; his exit wasn’t the best part of this episode. Ali’s conversation with his mother was funny especially because he has always been such a superficial character.

Anaya Goes Back To Work

After taking the longest leave ever Anaya finally went back to work in this episode only to find out that her boss had been replaced. Although it was easy to understand why it was so difficult for Anaya to leave her son and go to work this aspect of her personality was given more screen time than necessary. Anaya’s character has been confusing throughout, sometimes it is difficult to tell where her priorities lie. The writer could have shown how difficult it was for her to leave Ibrahim and go back to work without making it look like she was willing to leave the job. There has always been a really practical side to Anaya’s personality which sometimes has been overshadowed by love for her husband and now her son. Surely, there are many women who can maintain a good balance on their own, it would have been great if Anaya did not get so confused every now and then. It was eventually Anaya’s mother who made her realize that she needed to go back to work. At the same time, she also missed the times when men used to earn! The addition of such pointless dialogues makes these characters confusing.

Sabaat Episode 27 Story Review – Mediocre

Overall, however, it was good to see Anaya’s track progressing. She dealt with her new boss’ advances intelligently and definitely knows how to keep her distance. I am guessing that Hassan will somehow be convinced of her innocence in the upcoming episode after he witnesses something himself.

Miraal and Ali’s ‘Love Story’

There hasn’t been the slightest change in Miraal’s character or track in all these years. Since Ibrahim turned one in this episode therefore Miraal has been trying to get a divorce for over a year now! Even though she met Harris after so long, her dialogues were still the same! I am sure Sarah Khan did not have to put in a lot of effort to learn these dialogues since not much has changed over the years and in these 27 episodes! Harris was shown trying to salvage a relationship that only existed in his head. I was hoping that this last meeting will be used by the writer to make this track somewhat meaningful with Harris pointing out exactly where Miraal went wrong in her life. It is however safe to say that Harris succeeded in being the most useless character right till the end! I am seriously disappointed with this entire track; all the screen time it got was a complete waste of time.

Sabaat Episode 27 Story Review – Mediocre

Ali gave his mother a lecture after she told him not to marry Miraal. Somehow the writer thought this was a good time to discuss why Ali loved to be controlled by Miraal! I wish he had invested this time in revealing why Miraal is so twisted.

Hassan’s Trust Issues Continue

There was no change in Hassan’s thinking in this episode either. In fact, Atif managed to convince him that he needed to divorce Anaya. So, Miraal got what she wanted and this scene wasn’t the lease bit impactful. Hassan is still living under a rock since he has no idea even now that Anaya’s father passed away. The way the writer has handled Hassan’s character, in particular, has been the most disappointing element of the story since Ameer Gillani acted so well and this track had so much potential. Hassan literally started seeing the world with Atif’s eyes ever since he got married and nothing has changed.

Final Remarks

I am glad that Sabaat will finally be ending next week! I remember how excited I was when I watched the initial promos, I couldn’t have imagined that such a good team would not be able to deliver. Except for some meaningful scenes covering Anaya’s track, Sabaat’s story was all over the place!

Sabaat Episode 26 Story Review – Anaya Is Back

After a long time, I actually enjoyed watching Sabaat all thanks to Anaya’s track. Anaya is back with a bang! I absolutely loved how Anaya and her mother moved forward; beautifully shown. It would be safe to say that Anaya is better off without Hassan. Miraal’s tack continues to be shallow and meaningless. Even after all these years, her sole purpose in life continues to be the same. Anaya’s track is the saving grace of this drama for the most part. Although her character took a disappointing turn when she got married to Hassan, she is however back to being her old self. Mawra Hocane and Seemi Raheal were the stars of the show tonight. They breathed life into all those beautiful scenes.

Moving On With Grace

Tonight’s episode focused more on Anaya moving on than showing what Hassan was going through. The one scene which covered Hassan’s track made it clear that he was suffering. While Fareed’s family was drifting apart, Anaya and her mother were busy starting afresh even though the odds were against them. All their scenes were captured brilliantly and watching Anaya’s friends stand by her side was heartwarming. This track had so many positive sides to it. Although Anaya and her mother obviously missed the one they lost, they had the strength to look ahead. When Anaya wanted to give up, her mother gave her strength and when her mother did not have a lot of hope, Anaya came up with practical solutions to their problems. I missed this aspect of Anaya’s personality because when she was with Hassan she had lost her spark. Also, all these friends who were always there by her side suddenly disappeared. I am glad that Anaya has taken control once again.

Sabaat Episode 26 Story Review – Anaya Is Back

Anaya decided to start a business using her baking talent, something which wasn’t revealed previously. She decided that she was going to manage on her own, her mother and friends’ support throughout was endearing. This was such a wonderful way of showing how such support helps those ladies who want to move forward after they have had an experience like the one Anaya had. I wish she shouldn’t have said that she felt for her baby because he was going to grow up without a father. After all, the entire track was taken forward to establish that women can indeed raise their children independently too.

Miraal & Co

Miraal’s track is as ridiculous as it gets, she has a whole gang of seemingly intelligent people who endorse all her craziness. Even after all these months, Atif continues to be her spy and it was highly unconvincing the way he got all the inside information in this episode! How did he find out that Anaya was expecting? Not only this, he found out that Anaya had a baby immediately after she gave birth! Miraal decided to file for divorce and Ali was so ‘thankful’ to her. I am not surprised that she is getting a divorce but why is she even thinking about getting married again? Miraal has to be the most badly written and executed negative character we have seen in recent times. She has no emotions but she isn’t exactly evil. Someone like her would surely have some feelings and if that is not the case then she is a psychopath but somehow Harris has no diagnosis for her even now.

Sabaat Episode 26 Story Review – Anaya Is Back

The only good thing about this track was watching Fareed sitting on the dinner table waiting for his children but only Miraal turned up. He looked unhappy and different from the person he was before. After hearing about Miraal’s future plans, he did not try hard enough to convince her. His character has completely been sidelined since he could have had a conversation with Harris. Harris’ fixation with Miraal makes no sense whatsoever! Now he does not want to divorce her even though as a psychiatrist he should be able to tell that this marriage will not work out! All these characters are the worst part of the drama and since they get so much screen time, any episode focusing entirely on them is difficult to watch.

Final Remarks

After watching this episode, I am particularly interested in Anaya’s track. I couldn’t care less about Miraal since it is obvious that her track will have a sudden and most probably a predictable ending. It seems like Anaya is going to work for Miraal’s rivals. I just hope that she can bring their company down and make her way up.

Sabaat Episode 25 Story Review – Weak Script

Tonight’s episode of Sabaat was relatively engaging but Miraal continues to be the most shallow and uninteresting character in the drama. This entire track is pointless and repetitive. Ali’s character is back in the picture and I had a difficult time figuring out why he wanted to get married to Miraal now. Anaya, her mother, and Hassan’s mother are the only meaningful characters at the moment. Some of the decisions made by Anaya however were not too wise. Why did she even expect that at a time when companies were downsizing, she was going to get such a long leave? She can easily ‘hide’ her pregnancy for a few more months. Anaya’s attitude towards her job has been quite casual, had she quit this job and looked for another one, it would have made more sense. Harris’ scenes are so badly written that there are times when I actually feel for Usman Mukhtar! This episode was however really well directed and the camera work in some of the scenes was superb.

Anaya and Hassan

Tonight’s episode of Sabaat opened with Hassan feeling really emotional while he looked at his picture with Anaya. Even though he is convinced that Anaya indeed was having an affair, he did not allow Atif to share his opinion on the subject. This scene suggested that Hassan might be re-thinking his decision and doubting it but the conversation he had with his mother made it quite clear that he was convinced that Anaya indeed did cheat on him. Ameer Gillani acted brilliantly tonight; he made sure that Hassan’s confusion and his emotions were translated flawlessly on screen. Right now, Hassan is not even thinking about what his mother has been saying to him. His mother’s dialogues were written beautifully and it is definitely refreshing watching a sane person giving her opinion on the subject even though she knows that she won’t be heard.

Sabaat Episode 25 Story Review – Weak Script

Anaya’s friends are back in the picture and as far as I can recall one of her friends did meet her parents in the hospital and the doctor they were visiting happened to be her relative. Yet, all of them acted as if they knew nothing about the situation. There are many unnecessary secrets in this drama and like many of the typical Pakistani dramas; Sabaat also relies heavily on misunderstandings and miscommunication. Anaya has decided that she is not going to tell Hassan about their baby. In order to keep her pregnancy a secret, she wanted a 6-month leave from the office, something that confused me further about the timeline. This would mean that Anaya has not been going to the office for over a month yet somehow she has not been fired. Although she has great potential and her boss is a gentleman, no one gives such favors especially when the company is going through a crisis. All of us witnessed in the past few episodes how desperately Hassan looked for a job and the crisis in the construction industry was used as an ‘excuse’. Yet, somehow the same is not applicable for Anaya. Hassan was also a bright student who graduated from the same university as Anaya yet their situations in this particular aspect have been unbelievably different.

Anaya and Hassan’s scenes with their mothers were the best scenes from tonight’s episode. Mawra Hocane and Seemi Raheal’s performance in this particular scene was outstanding. Both of them made this scene so relatable. Both of them have had their vulnerable moments and there have also been moments when they were each other’s strength. I would give the writer credit for penning down these scenes realistically and the actors definitely breathed life in them.

Hassan’s mother is sure that Anaya is not lying but she has no idea that all of this is Miraal’s doing. Instead of convincing Hassan that Anaya was innocent, she tried to convince him to ‘forgive’ her. This was another well written and executed scene. Laila Zuberi’s character is finally coming into its own.

Miraal, Ali & Harris

Miraal’s track continued to be the most unconvincing and uninteresting part of this episode. Ali’s return and the explanation made no sense whatsoever. Why did he email the friend and not message Miraal? And now that he was back after a year why didn’t he get in touch with Miraal? If he really was waiting for Miraal to ‘get better’ and hadn’t moved on then why were they ‘reunited’ in a chance meeting? This entire development was just plain ridiculous! All this time we were thinking that Ali was wise enough to walk out and away from Miraal when he saw the red flags but apparently he is still smitten by her and would like to marry her once she takes a divorce!! He said he couldn’t live without Miraal and that he would die without her yet he never tried to get in touch with her. Not to mention the fact that these two were once engaged and surely they would have mutual acquaintances yet Ali had no idea that Miraal was now married.

Sabaat Episode 25 Story Review – Weak Script
The way Harris confronted Miraal when he saw her dining with Ali equally immature! Watching all these educated grown-ups acting like teenagers is not the least bit ‘entertaining’. The fact that we don’t get to see or hear Miraal’s inner turmoil or thoughts makes this entire track meaningless. We know by now that she is incapable of loving someone and all she wants is control but there was a part of her that was disturbed. How did she find peace? And if she found it when she fell in love with Harris then why is she not disturbed now after finding out that he lied to her. Miraal’s character had the potential to be interesting had the writer delved deeper into her thought process. She is negative and controlling; there is nothing more to her character.

Final Remarks

Sabaat’s script continues to be weak and it seems like the story is not going to be wrapped up anytime soon. Will all the tracks have a sudden and abrupt ending since there has been hardly any character development? All the characters in Sabaat had the potential to be more interesting had these tracks been covered in a different manner. This drama leaves you with more questions than anything else. Only a few relatively sane characters keep it from getting too dull. The production values and the picture quality is great but that does not make up for the lack of quality content.

Sabaat Episode 24 Story Review – Muhammad Ahmed Steals the Show

Finally an emotional episode of Sabaat which was not perfect but it was engaging throughout. Muhammad Ahmed, Mawra Hocane and Seemi Raheal nailed their respective performances. Muhammad Ahmed is such a gem, no other actor emotes the way he does. He makes you feel his pain and love almost effortlessly. The on-screen chemistry he shared with Mawra Hocane throughout made this father-daughter duo the best we have seen on our television screens this year. Although, his character has passed away in so many dramas, everytime he makes an exit it is equally powerful and emotional. Perhaps that is the reason why after Durr-e-Shehwar, there have been barely any dramas in which his character got a happy ending. His dialogue delivery and the treatment given to the characters he plays is always so outstanding that even if he exits the play early on, he leaves a lasting impression. It won’t be wrong to say that it was due to his performance that Anaya’s relationship with her father dominated all the other relationships in Sabaat. This makes me wonder if watching Sabaat would have been a different experience all together if all the characters were given a different treatment. Adding some warmth to relationships and even some emotional moments can change so much.

The scenes in the second part of the episode were confusing since the transition from one scene to the other was rather abrupt. These scenes reminded me of the few scenes from the first episode. All of a sudden the director rushed everything when there was room for adding some detail there.

Harris Caught ‘Red-Handed’

While all of us could tell that Harris’ grand plan would not work out, he was utterly surprised by Miraal’s reaction. We have all repeatedly talked about how ‘blind’ Harris’ love for Miraal is and how he cannot predict her reactions. He comes across as those submissive wives in Pakistani dramas who are constantly under pressure and cannot think straight. All these character traits do not go well with his ‘credentials’. A psychiatrist can have problems in his life too but he most certainly would be a better judge of toxicity in relationships. It actually made me laugh how Miraal caught him ‘red handed’! The way she walked out of his room was even funnier, like she was superwoman. The treatment given to Miraal’s character has been worst than the way this character has been written.

Miraal’s reaction however made perfect sense. Her ego was hurt and while she has no moral compass herself she expects everyone else to be perfect! For a change her friend tried to make her understand the situation but she couldn’t do much to change her point of view. Miraal and Harris’ track continues to be the most absurd part of the drama. It provided some comic relief today since Anaya’s track was extremely upsetting.

Sabaat Episode 24 Story Review – Muhammad Ahmed Steals the Show

The Only Sane Person

Hassan’s mother continues to be the only sane person in the family who has fear of God and some sense. It was good watching her trying to knock some sense into her son. Whatever she said made sense and hopefully the story will turn in that direction at some point. So far, most of such dialogues have fallen flat because all of us hoped that they would have some deeper meaning but they turned out to be totally meaningless. There were a few good dialogues in this episode but like I said most of them were merely words which did not have a profound effect. Laila Zuberi acted really well tonight, the fear was quite apparent on her face. The sad part is that no one listens to her.

Anaya Loses Her Best Friend

Anaya’s father was her best friend, the only person who loved her unconditionally. The last few scenes of Anaya with her father were so poignant and beautiful. Anaya felt lost because she was not used to dealing with something so huge all on her own. She had to deal with that and then there was unbearable pain of knowing that she might lose her father at any given moment. The ambulance scene wasn’t covered properly since Anaya was asking her father to get up and go to the ambulance! The director has definitely not done his job right especially when it comes to covering such minor details. If it wasn’t for the remarkable acting by the actors involved, this scene could have been completely void of emotions due to such execution errors. This was one of my favorite scenes tonight:

The patients in our dramas need to stop taking off their masks and saying their final goodbyes. I give Muhammad Ahmed tons of credit for pulling this scene off in the most dignified manner possible but our writers need to stop writing such scenes. An oxygen mask is there for a reason, a patient cannot breathe without it, when you cannot breathe you cannot talk! As someone who has gone through a similar experience, I would like to request all the writers to stop writing such scenes altogether because they are beyond ridiculous and highly insensitive.

Sabaat Episode 24 Story Review – Muhammad Ahmed Steals the Show

The Questions

So Atif somehow found out that Anaya’s father passed away. This scene was highly predictable since Atif somehow knows everything that happens in Anaya’s life but we can only wonder how he found out about her father’s death! Even if someone from the university informed him, howcome they did not inform Hassan since they were class fellows? If the writer wanted to show just how evil Miraal was, he should have shown how Atif found this out and why didn’t Hassan know. Hassan seems to be living under a rock ever since he left his home and came back. He looks at the world from Atif’s eyes, which is quite lame considering the fact that he used to be an intelligent and opinionated young man. Atif’s “har khabar par nazar’ reporting style is getting more annoying with every passing episode.

Final Remarks

Anaya and her parents’ scenes were the highlight of this episode yet again. The writer and the actors did complete justice to this particular track. Apart from Hassan’s mother, all the other characters seem to be a lost cause at the moment. I am extremely disappointed with the director since the last few scenes were so rushed and haphazard. However, for a change, I am actually looking forward to the next episode.

While I absolutely dislike Miraal, I am finding it really difficult to feel for Harris. He is a meesna and a bonga who simply should have known better. Ali had more common sense than him because when he saw the red flags he ran away as fast as he could. This ‘psychiatrist’ did not only marry a narcissist but also suggested that having children would make their life easier and then lied like an immature young boy. Seems like this track is going to go further down in the upcoming weeks.

Sabaat Episode 23 Story Review – Hamsafar Vibes

Tonight’s episode of Sabaat was emotional and just like every other episode of this drama, there were some situations that did not make much sense. Harris continues to be the most disappointing character in the drama, Miraal’s blatant disregard of other people’s feelings continues to be the same and this shift in Hassan’s character is unbearable, to say the least. It is good to have Anaya’s parents back in the picture. Syed Muhammad Ahmed and Mawra Hocane were stars of the show tonight. Syed Muhammad Ahmed is exceptional and he is definitely not the kind of actor who needs a director to guide him. That is probably the only reason why his scenes always leave an impact irrespective of who he works with. I truly felt for Anaya tonight and her reaction was translated really well on screen by Mawra Hocane. Ameer Gillani acted well considering this was his first such scene but the director failed to do justice to his scenes. The background score in this drama is most inappropriate at times. Although Shahzad Kashmiri is a skillful director yet there are so many scenes in Sabaat which fall completely flat because of his direction. The script has many loopholes and it isn’t impressive but the director has also failed to capture some of the emotions in such a way that they leave an impact. I couldn’t feel Hassan’s pain because his scenes were not captured properly. Some of the scenes were too slow which affected the overall tempo of this episode.

The Heartbreak

The turn Hassan/Anaya track was emotional and in a way pleasantly surprising considering the fact that Anaya so far has been doing whatever it took to ‘please’ her husband. This track also had Hamsafar vibes, Anaya is expecting, Hassan doesn’t know and he accused her of cheating! Ami aap kya keh rahi hei was replaced by a more powerful response by the writer. Anaya chose not to explain herself or even question Hassan. This for her was the end! I liked Anaya’s reaction and her anger was justified. The way she demanded that her father should be there for her was another refreshing aspect of this entire development. The fact that his father is unwell and she cannot share this tragedy with him was however a done-to-death scenario. I really want a happy ending for at least one of Muhammad Ahmed’s characters. He always makes us fall in love with the characters he plays but most of these characters exit the drama and leave us really sad. Anaya’s father is such an amazing human, he would have been her biggest support and together they could fight all odds but it was not meant to be!

Sabaat Episode 23 Story Review - Hamsafar Vibes

Hassan has joined the long line of all those husbands who fell for the trap set for them and doubted their wives. This is another scenario that we have seen in our dramas so many times. The writer has relied on too many clichés, sadly. He managed to avoid the ‘mein tumhei talaq deta hu’ part and now we are left wondering if Hassan will be able to redeem himself. The role Hassan’s mother played tonight was also a positive one which makes me wonder if she will eventually be able to knock some sense into him. It was actually frustrating watching someone as sensible as Hassan believing Atif. Even though Miraal made it pretty obvious that she couldn’t care less about Hassan’s feelings, he did not react to it.

Sabaat Episode 23 Story Review - Hamsafar Vibes

Miraal and Harris

We all know by now that Miraal is unreasonable, controlling, self-obsessed, and insensitive but Harris was introduced as an honest man with certain values. However, recently he comes across as someone who doesn’t even have a personality of his own. He doesn’t act like someone who guides other people through their emotional turmoil. He completely fails to see Miraal’s negative traits. When Miraal was ecstatic because her brother’s marriage failed Harris was somehow okay with that! He answered Miraal’s call and lied to her in the middle of his session, which was highly unprofessional. Had he turned out to be a negative character who wanted revenge or had issues of his own, this character would have been more interesting. Harris is Miraal no. 2 because he is equally shallow!

Sabaat Episode 23 Story Review - Hamsafar Vibes

Miraal’s conversation with her father was equally confusing. When they started talking it seemed like he did not know what Miraal had been planning but after a while whatever he said suggested that he was fully aware of everything. He is another character who is just as an enabler, nothing more and nothing less. By the end of this episode, Miraal found out that her husband lied to her and she will send Atif to verify whether that really is the case or not. Atif got the job he wanted so he will continue trying to please Miraal.

Final Remarks

I just hope that this drama wraps up soon because some of the tracks have stopped making sense altogether. This was a relatively better episode since there were some emotions involved but it was slow nevertheless.

Sabaat Episode 22 Story Review – Another Shukki Husband

Sabaat continues to focus on the marital problems faced by both couples. There was a major development in the story tonight but definitely not a pleasant one. So many viewers pointed out that Sabaat was a ‘modern version’ of ARY’s Nand and after watching a few episodes of Nand, I must say that I agree with them! I must add however that Faiza Hassan’s performance in Nand is much more impressive than that of Sarah Khan in Sabaat. Also, with Nand what you see is what you get, unlike Sabaat which promised to be a meaningful dramas but turned out to be clichéd to the core. The characters in Sabaat are equally black and white. Hassan is the only character in Sabaat which isn’t all black or white but the turn this character has taken has done-to-death written all over it! We have seen jealous and controlling family members creating such misunderstandings between married couples innumerable times in dramas. Watching Hassan fall for all the lies has been extremely disappointing.

This was another episode of Sabaat which did not even have a single scene showing what is going on in Anaya’s parents’ life. The writer has conveniently sidelined all the sane characters from the story so that Hassan and Anaya in particular are left at the mercy of people like Atif and Miraal! Mawra Hocane’s performance continues to impress and I found myself feeling for Anaya a little after a long time.

Hassan and Anaya

Tonight’s episode opened with Hassan showing the first signs of abuse when he confronted Anaya like she was the enemy solely based on his discussions with Atif. Hassan’s insecurities and frustrations are getting the best of him and he is clearly no longer the person Anaya chose to marry. Ameer Gillani and Mawra Hocane acted brilliantly in this scene. Anaya once again chose to ignore Hassan’s behavior. It would have been good if Anaya put her foot down for a change but the writer is bent on showing that she has the patience of a saint! I don’t see this as a positive trait especially because before she got married she was completely capable of finding a solution to her problems. Instead of questioning Hassan’s behavior and making him realize that he is wrong, Anaya continued trying to act as if nothing had happened. She no longer talks to her friends or even herself therefore we have no way of knowing what she is thinking and how she manages to stay so positive. I like Anaya’s positive nature and her practical approach but sometimes her reactions can be really difficult to relate to. She is a little too forgiving at times and the way she bounces back is unreal.

Sabaat Episode 22 Story Review - Another Shukki Husband

The scene showing Hassan stressing out about his future and his frustrations made perfect sense. However, like someone else pointed out earlier, he can easily start working online again. Right now it seems like Hassan is too immature and gullible to be living on his own. While Anaya is a strong and positive person, Hassan is continuously complaining and worrying about things that are not in his control. The only takeaway from this track is that overprotected rich boys should not get married until they are mature enough to make wise decisions. When Anaya and Hassan moved out of the house, I thought that this was going to be the beginning of a healthy relationship but these two have been facing continuous problems ever since they moved out and what makes the situation worse is that Miraal is behind all this.

Miraal and Harris

Just like Anaya, Harris is also doing whatever he can to make his spouse happy but he is also a ‘meesna’. Miraal has absolutely no respect for Harris’ feelings or decisions. Since he is a man, he managed to find a way out and decided to do what he wanted to. This track is also really slow since it took Harris so much time to do what he wants! He won’t even get away with it as Miraal will find out that he is practicing again in the upcoming episode. Miraal and Harris’ track is literally putting me to sleep! Harris is a bigger caricature than Anaya since his response to everything is the same. Usman Mukhtar seems to be bored with his character too therefore his performance is just as plain as the character itself.

Sabaat Episode 22 Story Review - Another Shukki Husband

Nothing is pleasing about Miraal getting what she wants. We have been watching her have her way right from the first episode, it’s about time that we get to see some change in her character and track. The character doesn’t have many layers and all of Miraal’s scenes are more or less the same.

Final Remarks

Hassan turning into the typical shukki husband was the worst part of this episode. The story it seems is finally moving forward and I really hope that they don’t stretch this drama further. Harris continues to make one stupid decision after the other without thinking about the repercussions.

Sabaat Episode 21 Story Review – Pointless and Slow

After watching this episode, I can safely conclude that the award for the most pointless and uninteresting script goes to Sabaat! Ameer Gillani and Mawra Hocane’s solid performances have been wasted completely because their track and this drama has practically nothing to offer! This is turning out to be another one of those HUM dramas which have a star cast and are promoted like they are the next big thing but the content is shallow and the resulting product just plain boring. The viewers have been watching Miraal have her way right from the first episode and nothing has changed so far. What makes this drama worse than many other such dramas is that the negative character does not even have a screen presence. Sarah Khan’s performance and even her character leave a lot to be desired.

We have watched dramas in the past in which the negative characters were etched-out so brilliantly and translated on-screen so well that their scenes left an impact. Miraal’s scenes are repetitive and show only one side of her personality. Even her dialogues in every episode are more or less the same. Her life has been limited to making Hasan regret his decision to marry Anaya so that he can come back ‘home’! All the ‘good people’ have conveniently been sidelined so that there is no one around to knock some sense into Hasan! This drama reminds of Mann Mayal, which stopped making sense after a few episodes. It is unfortunate that the writer had a few good characters and a chance to show successful marriages irrespective of the class differences but Hasan has turned into another one of those loser husbands.

Hasan Is a Lost Cause

Yes! That is the conclusion I drew after watching tonight’s episode. Although Hasan’s frustration makes sense, there was a really sensible side of his personality which has been overshadowed by his unlimited complexes and insecurities. The man who was willing to give up everything because of Anaya is now listening to someone like Atif! Atif was never in favor of Hasan’s marriage to Anaya, he still went ahead and did what he wanted. Right now, however, he literally lets Atif say whatever he wants and what makes it worse is that he is actually influenced by whatever he says. Hasan was a zinda lash in this episode and Anaya’s ‘positivity’ was unreal. Even though Anaya was introduced as a balanced and intelligent woman before, now her character only has one side – making Hasan happy no matter what!

Sabaat Episode 21 Story Review - Pointless and Slow

Hasan decided to leave the job, that was one of the best decisions he made recently. He has started believing that Anaya indeed is having an affair with his boss which is incredibly sad and which makes me wonder if he even deserves a wife like her. There were barely any meaningful conversations between these two and their interactions make it difficult to believe that they are a married couple. They have always been ‘distant’ and the romance has been missing. Even then I would say that both these actors involved have added some life to their characters even though they have not been written down well. When I watched the preview of this episode, I was hoping that Hasan will realize his mistake and will for a change start looking at things differently. On the contrary, Hasan will actually confront Anaya in the upcoming episode.

It was surprising to see a couple who is trying so hard to make ends meet order an entire cake for the birthday! Also, Anaya’s reaction to Hasan’s cold behavior was really difficult to relate to. Where are Anaya’s parents and Hasan’s mother?

Dr. Harris Has Unresolved Issues

The doctor who was supposed to ‘save’ Miraal seems to have unresolved issues of his own. Because his parents could not have a happy married life, he wants to do whatever he can to make his marriage work. After giving the most shocking suggestion (to have kids) in the previous episode, this week Harris lied to Miraal to save his marriage. This marriage was always most unconvincing and it continues to be the most unappealing part of this drama. Miraal’s ‘jo mera hei wo completely mera hei’ dialogues show only one side of her personality and all the scenes covering her track are the same in every episode. I don’t have much hope that Harris will try to change the situation since he comes across as a timid individual.

Sabaat Episode 21 Story Review - Pointless and Slow

Usman Mukhtar’s monotonous dialogue delivery coupled with the way this character has been written makes me wonder why the producers or the writer thought we should have waited so many weeks for this character to make an appearance. It was not worth the wait at all! Sarah Khan’s wardrobe in the drama continues to be an eye-sore and she does not have a screen presence either.

Final Remarks

Honestly speaking, this was a filler episode and can easily be skipped. Sabaat is the kind of drama that you can catch up with after 3 weeks without missing much. The scenes are long, the pace is slow and there is barely anything to look forward to. I am watching this play to find out how it ends and I hope that it is going to end soon!

Sabaat Episode 20 Story Review – More Of The Same

Sabaat continues to disappoint because of a weak storyline. This isn’t the first time that a leading channel has used star power and great production values to get the attention of the viewers. The script is going downhill with every passing episode and right now I am honestly watching this play to find out how ridiculous Miraal’s track, in particular, can get. Once again after watching this episode I was wondering why Fareed and Miraal were the only ones who were not ‘struggling’ and of course Yasir Qureshi as well. Every Pakistani drama shows how the negative character usually drives the story forward but this drama has more than one such character. Not only this all the relatively pleasant characters seem to be in constant turmoil. There isn’t a moment of happiness in Hasan and Anaya’s life!

Hasan’s character had potential but he is too busy feeling sorry for himself. In this day and age, he does not have access to social media which does constantly remind you of other people’s birthday. Usman Mukhtar’s monotone dialogue delivery and this psychiatrist’s lack of understanding of his wife’s character is making this track a repetition of all the other relationships in Miraal’s life. There is absolutely no character development and Miraal’s naani visions proved to be another useless track! She needs to see a proper professional, one who does not fall for her. 20 weeks of one dead end after the other have made Sabaat a star-studded disaster. Mawra Hocane and Ameer Gillani have acted so well yet their track has nothing grand to offer.

Anaya’s Growth and Hasan’s Frustrations

Ever since Hasan and Anaya moved out of Hasan’s house, Anaya has been the one who is keeping things together while Hasan’s frustrations are never-ending! I felt for Anaya today when she was celebrating her promotion and had no idea what was going on in Hasan’s mind. Of all the people in the world, Hasan is actually listening to Atif. While Hasan’s frustrations were understandable, it was sad that he questioned Anaya about that phone call. Looking back at the kind of relationship they had and most importantly the kind of faith he had in Anaya, it was truly sad watching Hasan even think on those lines. Well, Miraal is still ‘winning’, Atif is doing all this to please her but the preview of the upcoming episode gave some hope. Hasan will hopefully resign from his present job and that conversation he was shown having with Anaya in the preview of the upcoming episode promised that he will finally realize his mistake.

Sabaat Episode 20 Story Review - More Of The Same

There is no romance between this newly married couple at all. They are too busy making ends meet. Hasan keeps on thinking about the present situation and Anaya is too busy making chai and keeping him happy! It was finally good to see Anaya and her parents together. It would be sad watching Anaya’s father die but it seems that will eventually happen. Anaya’s scenes with her father have been the most emotional and some of the best ones. There were so many different directions in which this track could have been taken. Anaya and Hasan could have moved in with Anaya’s parents and lived a happy fulfilling life but they are struggling otherwise and Anaya does not even know that her father is unwell!

Miraal – The Narcissist

We have seen so many controlling and selfish characters in Pakistani dramas but I must say that Miraal’s character has to be the most shallow and uninteresting one. Miraal looks like she is the boss, walks like she is the queen and the director makes sure that her character is presented that way as well, yet this character is just plain dull! The poor lady needs treatment yet she is the one running the show. She is the perfect example of a narcissist but then why couldn’t her psychiatrist husband see that? The scene in which Harris suggested that they should have a baby made me laugh so hard! Usually, we see desperate women who want to hold on to their good-for-nothing husbands make such foolish decisions. Hearing a psychiatrist say that a baby will bring a married couple close was simply unbelievable! You would expect a mohallay ki auntie giving such a suggestion but definitely not a prha likha professional who has enough experience to know that having a child won’t change Miraal! Harris naivety is simply nonsensical.

Sabaat Episode 20 Story Review - More Of The Same

I am glad that he is at least taking a stand and is not willing to quit his job but why can’t he see what Miraal’s issues are? These conversations between Miraal and Harris are so ‘plain’ that they suggest that both of them have the same mental caliber. I have said this before and I feel the need to say it every single time I watch a new episode of Sabaat – there was absolutely no need to show that Harris was a psychiatrist! The fact that he is a psychiatrist doesn’t add anything to his character. He did not help Miraal, he does not understand her issues and he did not even use his own intellect and experience to choose the right life partner for him.

Final Remarks

Tonight’s episode was basically a bit more of everything that we have been shown in the previous few weeks. The locations are grand and the picture quality is great but Sabaat lacks substance altogether. Anaya is turning out to be too-good-to-be-true as well, this character is definitely slightly more likable than the rest but it doesn’t have enough shades. She does not question Hasan’s frustrations or suggest a way out, her wife duties are restricted to making chai and khana. Surely someone as sensible as her who had such great problem-solving skills could have done more for her forever clueless husband! After watching Anaa, I was desperately waiting for Usman Mukhtar’s next project but I must say that I am beyond disappointed with the kind of character he chose to play.

Sabaat Episode 2 Story Review – Different Character Traits

Tonight’s episode of Sabaat established the leading characters further. Some of the developments were likable while there were others that were unconvincing. Hassan’s overnight change was the most difficult one to relate to. It was almost as if he was waiting for a dupatta-clad good girl to give him a reality check! I find Anaya’s character appealing minus the clichés but the role she played in bringing about this change in Hassan was a little too stereotypical.

This episode covered the events a few days after Hassan and Anaya’s confrontation therefore some of the developments were difficult to grasp at first. Also, are there really people out there who will pay someone 3 days after they start working? While the pay scale and the nature of Hassan’s job made sense but the fact that he was already shopping from his money didn’t add up. I think these things should have been shown instead of conveying a lot of it through different dialogues. All the tracks, however, gave some kind of new information about these characters.

Miraal’s Personality

Miraal’s basic personality was shown in the first episode but tonight we saw more of it and it can be safely said that she has an attitude problem. She has a self-righteous and controlling behavior. She feels like she does not owe anyone anything, not even respect. The way she tried to influence her brother’s decisions showed that her relationship with everyone around her was toxic. In the first episode, these two appeared to be quite close to one another but apparently all these years Miraal has simply been controlling her brother.

Except for her father, Miraal has zero-tolerance for everyone else around her. She doesn’t only want to run her life the way she wants but also makes sure that everything else around her also works according to her wishes. And she definitely does not hold back! The fact that she did not leave Hassan alone but actively tried to find out more showed that she takes controlling others really seriously! I was not expecting Miraal’s character to take such a negative turn but it is easy to understand why she thinks people are just as disposable as things. She is definitely spoiled and her father clearly thinks there is nothing wrong with that.

Sabaat Episode 2 Story Review - Different Character Traits

There must be a good reason why Miraal’s relationship with her naani is being given so much screen time. I am more intrigued to find out how her behavior with her naani will influence her personality in the upcoming episodes. Sarah Khan translated her character convincingly on screen, I especially liked her acting when she interacted with her naani and her brother’s friend.

The Change in Hassan

The preview of this episode did suggest that Hassan was going to take Anaya’s advice more seriously than expected but I really wasn’t expecting him to change his ways the way he did. Hassan’s dialogues clearly suggested that it wasn’t just what Anaya said which made him rethink his present choices but it was also because of everything he had heard people saying about him in the past. This cannot possibly be an easy decision for someone like him yet he seemed to be quite confident about it. I really think that this development should have been covered gradually.

While Hassan’s decision was quite mature, the way he informed Anaya about his decision was extremely immature. I felt that he was still confused and trying to prove that he could do this. It was difficult to take his decision seriously. Later on, he told Miraal that he had expected her to support him the most yet he never even sat down with her to discuss this major shift in his life. Ameer Gilani gave a decent performance but I really don’t find his overall styling appealing. Am I the only one who thinks he looks a little like Rahim Pardesi?

Sabaat Episode 2 Story Review - Different Character Traits

Anaya – A Progressive Character

I absolutely loved Mawra Hocane’s performance tonight and I also like the character she is playing. Although Anaya so far is a little too perfect and completely different from Miraal but she is also vocal and confident. Some of her dialogues were written really well tonight, like the one about picking her battles wisely. Her parents too are just as likable, I wanted to see more of them in this episode. Muhammad Ahmed is such an exceptional actor, he has a definite screen presence.

Anaya’s parents are supportive and they are continuously cheering her on. It was also good to see that Anaya’s friends had more to discuss than the incident with Hassan.

Final Remarks

I liked this episode more than the first one although I am finding it difficult to warm up to Hassan’s track just yet. The director once again kept things real and at the same time visually pleasing. The only scenes which transitioned in a confusing manner were the ones from the college to Miraal trying to access her brother’s laptop. This scene was a lot like the opening scenes from the first episode. There is nothing exceptional about this drama so far but it is engaging enough.

The preview of the next episode showed a confrontation between Miraal and Hassan after Miraal decides to perhaps tell Anaya off.

Sabaat Episode 19 Story Review – Marital Problems

After watching Sabaat’s episode last week, I wasn’t sure if I could actually sit through another episode of this drama but tonight’s episode was better than the previous one. Even though the objectives and basic personalities of the characters more or less remain the same, there was some progress in the storyline. I still feel that Sabaat’s story overall is quite pointless, in all these weeks there has hardly been any tangible meaningful development in the story. Anaya and Hasan’s track could have taken such a positive and even inspiring turn had it been shown as the perfect union of two people who wanted the same things in life. On the contrary, the track focuses more on the problems these two have been facing ever since they got married more than anything else. Some smooth sailing for a while would have been great. On the other hand, Fareed and Miraal have unlimited wealth and they continue to exercise control. In a nutshell, tonight’s episode focused on both the married couples and showed how their relationships were progressing.

Anaya’s parents for the longest time continued to be the most heart-warming aspect of the story. I completely fell in love with their characters for obvious reasons. Anaya’s father is yet another beautiful and gentle character played by the most adorable Syed Muhammad Ahmed. Unfortunately like many other such characters played by him, it seems like this one will also die! This for me was the most disturbing development of this episode. Anaya had such close ties with her parents, their bond was extremely special yet we haven’t seen her interacting with her parents enough. Her father’s diagnosis came as a complete shock since there was no background to this. In the previous episode, he met Anaya and he seemed fine.

Hasan and Anaya

I am glad Anaya and Hasan’s scenes in this episode were not as disappointing as the ones we saw in the previous one. Hasan’s frustrations continue to grow and unfortunately, Miraal is still in a way running his life for him. Hasan wants to leave the job but Atif keeps on telling him not to do that because of his ulterior motives. It was good to see Anaya giving him advice like a friend and wife who had faith in him and not like a mother lecturing his son! There was more active communication between these two too unlike before. It would have been even better if once in a while they took some time out to enjoy themselves. Their life is a little too robotic and there isn’t much romance. Both of them have a job and they have each other yet most of their conversations are more practical than romantic!

Sabaat Episode 19 Story Review - Marital Problems

Mawra Hocane and Ameer Gillani make a cute on-screen couple. Anaya and Hasan have interesting personalities as well but the writer has definitely not added the spark needed to make this track more likable. They come across as two wise but really boring people trying to make ends meet – nothing more and nothing less! Hasan’s frustration is justified but he is not trying hard enough to find another job. Anaya on the other hand has a rewarding job and she does not have to face the challenges which Hasan is facing. Hasan was more eager to start afresh before than he is now. In my opinion, there was absolutely no need to make this track so grim since Hasan and Anaya did nothing wrong. They are not the ones who should be punished for taking a stand for themselves. The message this track is sending out is completely wrong!

Miraal and Harris

The first part of Miraal and Harris’ track showed how uncomfortable Harris felt living in Miraal’s parents’ house. He also felt ‘ignored’ because his wife was too busy with her work! It was actually good to see Miraal focusing on something other than Hasan and Anaya but happiness is short-lived! As soon as Miraal found out who Hasan was working for, she was once again completely focused on getting Hasan back! This part of Miraal’s personality and this track is extremely annoying.

I am going, to be honest, and say that I am happy Miraal has started giving Harris a tough time! In my opinion, he completely deserves it since he made such a foolish choice when he decided to marry Miraal! Harris’ character is so plain and unappealing. He barely has any emotions! He is always so contained and even if something bothers him, he makes sure he does not show his actual emotions. He is clearly smitten by his wife which is the only reason why he even ignored the fact that she walked in while he was attending to his client. Miraal is getting jealous now and hopefully, soon enough Harris will see that he married a monster. Most of the time it seems like he does not know Miraal at all but he loves her nevertheless and would do anything to please her.

Sabaat Episode 19 Story Review - Marital Problems

Final Remarks

There was some much-needed progress in all the tracks in this episode which made this episode slightly interesting. Although Sabaat’s overall story so far doesn’t have a definite direction but I want to know how these tracks are taken forward in the upcoming episodes. Harris is sadly turning out to be a plain character, somewhat of a caricature. Everything that has happened in these 19 weeks could easily have been covered in 10 weeks. Sarah Khan’s dressing in this episode stood out like a sore thumb! These gowns and jackets she has been wearing in Sabaat have been the worst part of her overall look.

The preview of the next episode suggested that Harris will soon have to deal with the controlling, narcissist side of Miraal’s personality. I really hope that Atif is not able to brainwash Hasan into thinking that marrying Anaya was an unwise decision!

Sabaat Episode 18 Story Review – Lackluster

Sabaat has been on air for 18 weeks and we have barely seen a couple of good episodes. The drama continues to be unimpressive and the story is moving forward at a snail’s pace. Even the dialogue delivery of some of the actors has been ‘slow’! It was good to see Anaya’s parents in the opening scene tonight since they are the best part of the drama, clearly, all the other characters are not interesting enough. They are positive individuals who always have the right approach towards everything. Overall, however, this was another uninteresting episode in which the story progressed without leaving much impact. It is definitely not the kind of drama that keeps you on the edge or looking forward to more. Sabaat can easily be termed as the most meaningless play which has been presented in such a way as if it has something bigger to offer! You keep on waiting for some depth and meaning but most often there is none! Miraal got married in this episode and her sole purpose in life still is to separate Hasan and Anaya. The whole ‘naani track’ has been relegated to the background therefore that served no purpose either except that because of it Miraal met her ‘soulmate’.

Miraal and Harris

Miraal and Harris got married in this episode but there was nothing exciting about this marriage or how it was covered. Like every other important development in Sabaat, this marriage was also just another event! Harris is yet another person in Miraal’s life who does whatever he can to please her majesty! Harris’ house seems to be in the same place as Miraal’s father, a different location would have been a good change. Perhaps that is why Miraal feels that nothing has changed since she got married! The ‘misunderstanding’ at the wedding when Harris was joking with his friends might have reflected Harris’ actual intentions but then he seems to be quite well-off himself. I hope there is more to this character and it isn’t as plain as it appears to be.

There has been absolutely no change in Miraal’s personality. Those sessions with Harris were obviously pointless. Apart from the fact that naani is not haunting Miraal anymore, everything else is pretty much the same. Miraal chose not to invite Hasan to her wedding herself and his friend is putting in a lot of effort to brainwash him. The marriage was covered nicely, the big hall and the guests made it look like it was a real wedding but Miraal and Harris’ relationship was more typical and shallow than anything else. Miraal wants Harris to be her ‘psychiatrist’ as well as her husband now and he is more than willing to comply *yawn*!

Sabaat Episode 18 Story Review - Lackluster

Anaya and Hasan

When Anaya and Hasan moved out of the house, I was actually looking forward to how their life would be without interference from Miraal but guess what, Miraal is still pretty much influencing their lives. Hasan’s situation is understandable and his frustrations make sense. It is however frustrating watching this extremely cute on-screen couple in situations that are a little too realistic. Some light romantic scenes between these two would have made this track more entertaining. Right now Anaya comes across more like a motherly figure than Hasan’s wife! The writer should have focused a little more on the romantic aspect of their relationship.

Some of the scenes tonight suggested that Hasan was not happy with the way things turned out. It was Anaya who motivated him to give everything up and start a new life and that was when he did not even know Anaya. Now that he is in love with her and she is his wife, it is almost as if being with her is not rewarding enough. While the struggles and the disappointments these two have faced have been shown logically, watching this track take such a sad turn is upsetting. Miraal did not feel for Hasan even when she found out what he was going through. She is so convinced that she is doing her brother a favor by making him suffer since this would ultimately lead to creating a rift between him and Anaya.

Sabaat Episode 18 Story Review - Lackluster

Hasan has joined Yasir Qureshi’s company and in the next episode his father will find that out too. I am wondering how this track will be taken forward although just like many other previous developments which had potential, this one may not be exploited in an interesting manner.

Final Remarks

Miraal and Harris’ track has been penned down in such a manner that it is just plain unappealing. I still feel like I don’t know Harris at all and whatever I have watched so far suggests that he is a really boring character, to stay the least. I am still wondering why Fareed is shown putting his wife down in every single episode, is it even necessary? Hasan and Anaya’s character is going downhill as well, Hasan has turned into an angry young man and Anaya is constantly giving him advice which was slightly annoying. Having said that, I think Mawra Hocane has performed really well. I wish the characters and their tracks were more meaningful.

Sabaat Episode 17 Story Review – The Proposal

Sabaat continues to be a mediocre drama because the script lacks clarity and the screenplay leaves a lot to be desired. Harris’ background was finally revealed in this episode and he proposed to Miraal as well. After watching their scenes, I am still wondering why he is in love with this woman and why isn’t he trying harder to ‘fix’ the problems she has. This track definitely lacks the kind of clarity which was required to make the viewers relate to this attraction Harris has toward Miraal. Since everything is being revealed gradually, all we can do it sit and wait!

Unfortunately, Anaya and Hasan’s scenes were repetitive. There was a role reversal in this episode, Anaya was the one who constantly reassured Hasan. I was really hoping that we will for a change get to watch a couple which did not fall into the stereotypes our writers so diligently follow but that was most certainly not the case. The pace of this episode was just as slow as the previous few. It was difficult for me to sit through some of the scenes which could easily have been chopped down. I missed watching Anaya’s parents tonight and Hasan’s mother went back to being a caricature in this episode. Harris’ comment about Fareed being a wonderful father made me laugh. Unless he turns out to be a negative or twisted character, his personality makes little sense. How could a psychiatrist be such a bad judge of character? How could he out of his own free will choose to marry a narcissist who made it pretty clear that he would have to win her over? Miraal’s ‘please me’ attitude is was as clear as daylight in their third meeting yet Harris chose to ignore all these signs. I really hope that his troubled past would have some relevance otherwise there was no need to make his story so ‘tragic’!

Miraal and Harris

After making sure that the viewers knew that there was nothing wrong with Miraal and Harris dating now, the writer moved on really quickly to showing them meeting frequently. Since they were not in touch at all after that email, their meetings were difficult to connect to. They appeared to be individuals who knew each other well yet we have seen very few scenes in which they had a meaningful conversation. This track has been covered and carried forward in the most unconvincing manner. So, we must assume that while both of them were meeting and talking on the phones during the therapy sessions, they drew close to one another. That is what all the conversation tonight and in the previous episode suggested.

Sabaat Episode 17 Story Review - The Proposal

So. Harris had a difficult childhood, he has no relatives and does not like to stay in touch with his parents since they abandoned him as a child. I would have liked to know how he made it this far since it seems like he is financially stable. The proposal on Miraal’s request and their conversation, later on, suggested that Harris was more than willing to be yet another person in Miraal’s life who would do anything to please her. Also, the way Miraal talked about herself and how well he knew her went to show that she did not hide anything from him. Some of the readers were wondering if Miraal really revealed her actual personality in those therapy sessions since we never got to watch them, well we got the answer today! Yes, Harris knows how controlling Miraal is and that she likes people to please her, yet he sees nothing wrong with that. In fact, he thinks that Fareed has done a superb job raising his daughter!

Fareed was much more flexible when it came to Miraal’s marriage, no surprises there. Although he had made up his mind that Miraal would continue living them after she got married, he did not put his foot down. Miraal once again got what she wanted quite easily. The way Fareed tells his wife off is just plain disgusting, watching women put up with such men in dramas especially when they have the option to leave the house is disappointing.

Anaya and Hasan

Although I absolutely loved Mawra Hocane and Ameer Gillani’s performances tonight, their track took a disappointing turn. Anaya was shown working, making breakfast, lunch, and even dinner while Hasan felt completely useless. Why couldn’t Anaya let Hasan help her? This was such a perfect opportunity for the writer to show that there is nothing wrong with a woman earning and a man looking after the house and cooking but their story took such a clichéd turn! Hasan felt useless and perhaps insecure as well. If he had the meals prepared for Anaya when she came back from the office, he would have felt more ‘useful’ but that was somehow not his duty!

Sabaat Episode 17 Story Review - The Proposal

The construction business going down did not do Fareed any harm, someone who I was hoping would get a wake-up call once he loses his wealth but it affected Hasan and Anaya more. Anaya’s parents were completely missing from this episode, their advice and support could have helped Hasan as well. All of Hasan and Anaya’s scenes were more or less the same. In the previous few episodes, I was feeling for Hasan because he had to continuously reassure Anaya and in this episode, it was the other way around. Moving into a new house, away from Miraal could have been shown as a positive development in their lives but apparently it has created more problems for them. The preview of the next episode suggested that Hasan will get more frustrated with Anaya in the upcoming episode.

Final Remarks

I am still waiting to find out who Harris really is. Is he as nice as he appears? Does he have an ulterior motive? Tonight’s episode was definitely not the best. The preview of the next episode showed that Miraal is still bent on creating a rift between Hasan and Anaya. So far, Sabaat’s script lacks clarity, depth, and meaning therefore I don’t have high expectations from the upcoming episode. The director has focused a great deal on making each episode visually pleasing and he has succeeded in doing so but many of the ‘important’ scenes are most often not as impactful as they should or can be.

Sabaat Episode 16 Story Review – New Beginning

After watching the previous episode, I didn’t have high expectations from this particular episode. Tonight’s episode however was pleasantly surprising. Although Hasan and Anaya’s reactions when Hasan’s mother suggested that they should move out of the episode were not too convincing, the overall development was quite likable. This was one of those few episodes which showed the bonding between Hasan and his mother. The best part of this episode was watching Hasan’s mother turn from a caricature to a really strong character. I do feel however feel that Laila Zuberi has underplayed this character a little more than needed. This episode would have been faultless had the writer not tried so hard to make Anaya so ‘politically correct’! Even after everything that happened, she was still willing to live in the same house as Miraal although she had been given the option of moving out of the house. The writer deserves credit for penning down Hasan and Anaya’s scene in the apparent so beautifully. Ameer Gillani and Mawra Hocane’s brilliant performances made these scenes extremely realistic. I must say that Mawra Hocane’s performance, in particular, was simply outstanding. I still feel that the thappar in the previous episode was completely unnecessary since Miraal’s insults were a good enough reason for Hasan and Anaya to leave the house.

The New Beginning

Most of us were hoping that it would eventually be Hasan who would make the decision to live independently but that was not the case. The writer change in Hasan’s mother’s stance more convincingly than anything else in the first part of this episode. In the beginning, she tried to convince her husband to get Miraal married but he has already decided that she will continue living in this house even after getting married. She could have talked to him about Hasan and Anaya living independently but she chose not to do that. There were times when Fareed seemed like the kind of man who could show some flexibility but clearly when it comes to pleasing Miraal, he does not even use his common sense! He is more than willing to let his only son go because he knows if he tries to stop him, Miraal will get upset.

Sabaat Episode 16 Story Review - New Beginning

Although Fareed’s attitude is extremely annoying, it is also the perfect explanation for Miraal’s present condition. Any child who is brought up in this manner would find it impossible to hear no for an answer as an adult. I think the writer has intelligently shown how important it is for parents to do their job right! A parent’s job is not to ‘please’ their child at all costs but their job is to ensure that their child grows up to be a balanced and responsible adult.

I couldn’t understand why Anaya was all dressed up when Hasan’s mother came to meet her since last week she was not willing to go back at all. Also, Anaya has not been shown taking any big decisions lately. It is as if the writer wants to portray a ‘perfect’ image of a wife and a daughter-in-law but in doing so he has taken the human element away from this character. Taking important decisions or stance does not mean that a woman is rebellious, she could have taken this decision and carried it out as gracefully as Hasan’s mother did.

The scenes showing how much support Hasan got from his mother, the childhood stories and the lunchbox were some of those scenes which made me wish we could have seen more of this and less of Miraal’s repetitive craziness. The director deserves tons of praise for shooting the apartment scenes so well. The way he captured the emotions of these characters and showed what it was like to move into a new place which isn’t yet ‘home’ was extremely relatable!

Hasan and Anaya

Hasan and Anaya’s scenes in the apartment were better than those which covered their honeymoon. Mawra Hocane did exceptionally well in the scene in which Hasan asks her if she liked the apartment. Everything happened suddenly, this was not the kind of change she planned or looked forward to. A girl who was always used to being around parents and family now had to start a new life. These scenes were beautiful and realistic because they covered convincingly how their life had changed all of a sudden.

Sabaat Episode 16 Story Review - New Beginning

Hasan and Anaya are finally free! They can live their lives on their own terms and conditions, clearly, they are more than willing to give this new life their best. They literally were like two love birds who had just been freed from a cage! I am glad there was more friendship and support shown in these scenes than the done-to-death romance.

It was also good to see Hasan reacting to Miraal’s insulting behavior for a change! Anaya put those pictures of Facebook and Hasan the video but later on, she said she did not want anyone to know yet that they had moved out of the house.

Harris (Absent) and Miraal

So after all these weeks of waiting for Usman Mukhtar to finally make his entry, we only got to watch a few unimpressive scenes so far and now Dr. Harris is absent from the scene. Even if he is not in touch with Miraal, the viewers should have been at least introduced to the character itself in this episode. I have watched all the episodes with Dr. Harris in them and I still don’t know him! What kind of a person is he? Does he have a family? Does he have a story to tell? It has been 15 weeks, the viewers at least should have been introduced to his character properly. So far he is Miraal psychiatrist/psychologist (even that has not been determined yet) who now wants to be her friend and is, therefore, taking a ‘break’!

Miraal is clearly not ‘cured’, she still has the same mission in life and she is not seeing a professional any more either. This entire track literally gets on my nerves because it is highly repetitive. The fact that Miraal is a narcissist is well-established by now, can we please move on! She is still planning to somehow end Hasan’s marriage with Anaya which basically shows she is a dimwit too! This is definitely the track that has been the most unappealing aspect of Sabaat.

Final Remarks

I am definitely rooting for Hasan and Anaya after watching this episode. I just wish, the writer wouldn’t have been so focused on making Anaya so ‘perfect’. Tonight’s episode belonged to Mawra Hocane, her performance was outstanding throughout. Hasan and Anaya’s scenes were well written and executed, they made this episode engaging and quite likable as well.

Sabaat Episode 15 Story Review – Aur Karo “Compromise”

I am honestly fuming after watching this episode because watching an intelligent, independent and intelligent young lady like Anaya turn into the ultimate bechari in this episode was just plain annoying! Especially because this whole ‘please make mama happy’ scenario was so forced to begin with. There were so many aspects of this episode that were so unconvincing. Even after losing the NS 13 project, Fareed had complete faith in Miraal and was spoiling her as usual! He is such a ‘toxic’ father. How did he manage to get this far with this kind of attitude? There was so much hype surrounding this project yet losing it led to nothing but yet another ‘thappar’!!! So basically this will be the reason why Anaya and Hasan finally move out. Some writers use deaths to move the story forward and others use thappars. Someone, please check Dr. Harris’ degree because his ‘diagnosis’ of Miraal’s condition was so wrong!

This therapist/psychiatrist failed to see the control and anger issues Miraal has and only focused on the effect naani’s death had on Miraal – did I miss something? This was the lamest track in the story so far. This was essentially a romantic track which was chopped down due to all the criticism, nothing more and nothing less. The good thing is that this good-for-nothing therapist is no longer going to be managing Miraal’s mental health because he needs a break so that he can be ‘friends’ with her. Sabaat could have been such an interesting drama had the writer worked harder on establishing the characters and showing some character development. Why was mental health even covered in the drama if the writer was not going to do justice to it?

Anaya’s Attempts To “Adjust”

Right from the time Anaya got married, I wasn’t happy with how she was expected to put up with Miraal’s insulting behavior. Even after Miraal had already slapped her once, showed how much she despised her, and set Hasan’s room on fire on the night of their wedding, Hasan thought it was a good idea for Anaya to join the office! While I am all for ‘compromise’ in a relationship, there is clearly a big difference between compromising and putting up with regular insults! Anaya defined why she was so willing to ‘adjust’ and in a way not much had changed for her. The explanation she gave did not work for me at all. Changing buses or walking to university is not the same as living with someone who slapped you once and insults you on a daily basis! How could this intelligent girl with such great problem-solving skills forget that? Anaya’s character has seriously disappointed me, the writer had such a good opportunity to show all the young married women out there where to draw the line yet it took another thappar for Anaya and Hasan to do what they should have done early on.

Sabaat Episode 15 Story Review - Aur Karo "Compromise"

Last time Miraal slapped Anaya, Anaya’s first reaction was to hit her back but her friends stopped her. This time around however she was reminded of what Hasan said to her and ran to her parents for solace! Anaya has turned into this typical wife who cannot even decide where she wants to eat out. While Hasan and Anaya are really cute together, Hasan does whatever he can to show his support and love – I do feel that Anaya is at times such a ‘burden’ on him which is so unlike her! She was the one who used to solve everyone’s problems but all it took was nikkah ke du bol to turn her into this dependent and docile person who cannot solve any of the problems she is faced with. Although I felt for Anaya but only because of the way the writer has completely wasted this character.

Sabaat Episode 15 Story Review - Aur Karo "Compromise"

The Most Incompetent Therapist

Can we please give Dr. Harris ” The Most Incompetent Therapist” award already? The way he trivialized Miraal’s mental disorder was laughable! He also said he doesn’t charge her for listening to her because she somehow is doing him a favor by telling him his life story. So Miraal no longer is ‘haunted’ by naani but she is still a narcissist. Dr. Harris thinks Miraal is much better now while she plays havoc with everyone’s life, cannot control her temper, is completely incapable of maintaining relationships, and cannot take responsibility for anything! The email was well written because it covered all the aspects of the sessions and why he couldn’t continue but we all know that it was an indirect way of telling Miraal that he wanted to be friends with her therefore he could no longer be her therapist. Which makes me wonder what kind of a twisted person would fall for someone like Miraal? Even after knowing ‘everything’ about her, Harris thinks it is ‘safe’ to be in a relationship with a narcissist.

Sabaat Episode 15 Story Review - Aur Karo "Compromise"

Final Remarks

I am extremely disappointed with the latest developments and how Miraal got away with hitting Anaya yet again. Even Hasan’s reaction was not convincing enough. Anaya’s response was equally disappointing and when her mother said this was a ‘choti baat’, I was shocked!! And yes how can I forget Atif, if he had been working on this project, how could he not know who their competitors were? What kind of businessmen and employees are these? Hasan’s fever and vomiting suggest he might have some serious illness. He is the only likable character in the drama right now and one of the few supportive husbands we have seen in Pakistani dramas recently therefore I really hope they don’t kill him. Miraal is getting on my nerves now more than even since even her therapist finds her narcissist personality appealing! I am waiting to find out how Miraal has ‘helped’ him out, why he finds her ‘intriguing’! Although I am pretty sure that the reason will be just as lame as the sessions we have seen in these few episodes!

Sabaat Episode 14 Story Review – Zero Character development

Tonight’s episode of Sabaat yet again suggested that this drama is not going to deal with mental illness seriously like many other Pakistani dramas we have watched in the past. My expectations while watching Sabaat are completely different now. In the beginning, I was expecting it to be more meaningful and well-put-together but now it is pretty clear that Sabaat is another mediocre drama with a star cast. The production values are impressive and Sarah Khan has definitely put in a lot of effort to look and act differently this time around but the character she is playing does not have enough to offer. Miraal/Dr.Haris track is more likely to be a love story since they are not just meeting in cafes but also talking on the phone after working hours! Anaya and Hasan’s relationship is gradually turning out to be the better aspect of this drama although Hasan’s idea of inviting their friends at the office was such a bad one! Anaya’s relationship with her parents remains the best part of this drama but I honestly think that the writer needed to put in more life and substance into Miraal’s character. Miraal could have been a complex and grey character but so far she comes across as a brat who needs to get a life, nothing more and nothing less!!

Anaya and Hasan

All the scenes covering Anaya and Hasan’s track were realistic. The conversation with Anaya’s parents and the sweet romance in the office made their scenes likable. Some of the conversations were stretched and could have been chopped down. It is however strange that Hasan continues to ignore the fact that Anaya and Miraal simply cannot work in the same office especially considering the fact that Miraal is her boss. The writer has already established the fact that Anaya cannot work anywhere else since the last time Hasan tried to work elsewhere, there was great opposition. Anaya for now is putting up with everything in order to keep the ‘peace’. Sadly, Anaya too in a way is turning out to be one of those people who simply let Miraal get away with everything. Hasan thought it was alright to invite their friends to the office without informing ‘the boss’, that was like asking for trouble! Even when Hasan suggested it, I was hoping that Anaya will tell him that this was not a good idea but she went along with the idea. This confrontation was definitely not needed and could have been easily avoided!

Sabaat Episode 14 Story Review - Zero Character development

It was good to see Anaya sharing her problems with her father and it would have been even better if they got the chance to talk about it. Hasan’s mother also sensed that Miraal might be the reason behind Anaya’s sudden absence. For now, Hasan and Anaya are being ‘nice’ because they do not want to cause more problems for Hasan’s mother. I hope that things change in that department since both these characters have strong personalities and they are educated, they can easily move out of the house and stay in touch with Hasan’s parents. People live independently after getting married, there is nothing unusual about it therefore this whole issue now seems more forced than ever. Hasan and Anaya can live a simple life peacefully free from all the unwanted insults and trouble since they are definitely not dependent on materialistic things for happiness.

Miraal and Dr.Haris

There was only one scene in this episode that covered Dr.Haris’ attempt to make Miraal understand what she needed to do in order to change her thinking and attitude. Miraal did not pay much heed to his advice in fact her dialogue ‘aap meri counseling kar rahe hei ya mujhe depressed kar rahe hei’ was funny! She is so used to hearing what she wants to hear that these polite reality checks make her ‘depressed’!! So basically, Miraal wants Dr.Haris to make her happy – essentially do what everyone else has been doing for years, which is fundamentally the root cause of her mental disorder. Miraal’s scenes tonight clearly suggested that she is also falling for her doctor. She doesn’t want to listen to him and is still quite focused on ‘eliminating’ Anaya but she enjoys talking to Dr.Haris! Showing gradual change in Miraal’s attitude would have made this track more meaningful otherwise Haris could have been Miraal’s love-interest only, why introduce him as the therapist?

Sabaat Episode 14 Story Review - Zero Character development

Haris’ creepy friend continued to play the role he played in the previous episode. It is truly upsetting watching such a big production house normalizing such behavior. Surely, these scenes are not adding much to the story but give the wrong impression about the profession. Yes! This must happen but why show it so casually like there is nothing wrong with it.

Miraal is no longer seeing ‘naani’ therefore I am assuming that Haris has been able to make Miraal feel less insecure but then is that a good thing? Doesn’t Miraal need to understand that she will eventually be left alone if she doesn’t change her ways? This track is seriously confusing! Any guy Miraal would have fallen for could have made her realize the things, Haris is trying to make her realize. He hasn’t done anything yet which a businessman or an engineer couldn’t do – if you know what I mean!! More than once in this episode, Miraal blamed Hasan’s shadi for making her mentally upset! So basically these 3 sessions with Dr. Haris have not changed her thinking at all.

Final Remarks

Tonight’s episode of Sabaat had some likable scenes, Anaya/Hasan and Anaya’s family’s scenes are always refreshing. The progress in Miraal’s track wasn’t too impressive. Hopefully, a huge loss in business will turn out to be an eye-opener for Miraal! As I said, I don’t have high expectations from this drama anymore. Mawra Hocane and Ameer Gilani look cute together, hopefully, they will move out of this house and start a new life! This drama definitely needs to pick up pace and a change is much-needed.

Can someone please tell me why this employee wanted the day off? His dialogue delivery wasn’t audible. I think I know what he said but not too sure!

Sabaat Episode 13 Story Review – Extremely Disappointing

This had to be the worst episode of Sabaat and it won’t be wrong to say that this drama is going further downhill with every passing episode. So much for Dr. Haris’ entry! The conversation between Haris and his friend was sickening, to say the least. The fact that the makers of this drama were perfectly alright with normalizing such unethical and unprofessional behavior goes to show just how wrong their overall approach towards this entire track is. I was hoping that Miraal’s underlying issues will be highlighted once she started seeing a professional but unfortunately, the professional she is seeing has some unresolved issues of his own it seems! Anaya’s character also took a disappointing turn with this episode since her sole purpose in life right now is to win Miraal over! Watching such an intelligent and goal-oriented woman like her worrying about pleasing a narcissist was definitely off-putting. Right now, Hasan is the saving grace of this drama – never thought I would say that! He is the only one who talks sense and is not interested in pleasing Miraal. Fareed sahab is bent on making his daughter a bigger monster than she already is! Well, that was expected but I was not expecting the psychiatrist/patient scenes to be so poorly written and meaningless. I am equally disappointed with Usman Mukhtar who chose to play such a role. Although his role in Anaa wasn’t all positive either, it definitely was more meaningful than this one.

The Honeymoon and Reality Check!

This episode opened with Anaya and Hasan continuing with their honeymoon. Both of them came across as sensible and caring people who wanted to live a meaningful life until they went back to Hasan’s home and they turned into Miraal’s victims – nothing more and nothing less! The camping scene was cute and whatever they did to help those children was also a good way of showing their personalities and what these two were capable of doing as a team. The background scene when they were headed back to the hotel after camping was sad and so inappropriate. The director simply failed to make the most of the beautiful scenery and definitely did not do justice to these scenes. Most of the scenes were ‘slow’ with the most boring background score. In the previous episode Anaya wanted to stay in the mountains and in this episode when Hasan said he wanted to live there, Anaya said she liked staying with family! Miraal’s mother finally asked them to come back home after taking permission from her daughter and that is when both of them got a reality check!

Sabaat Episode 13 Story Review - Extremely Disappointing

Anaya was shown as a fierce woman who believed in looking for solutions for problems yet it seems that she has completely failed to understand Miraal. Why was she even expecting Miraal to accept her gift after the kind of confrontations she had with her. Later on, she was upset because she did not want to make Miraal upset! So, now the sole purpose of Anaya’s life is winning Miraal over otherwise her kids won’t have a phupo and cousins to play with!!!!

Hasan is the only one who realizes that Miraal is never going to change and if Anaya listens to him then she will probably be happier. It was seriously upsetting watching Anaya join the ‘let’s not upset Miraal’ club in this episode. Hasan’s majburis make more sense and it was also good to see him protesting a little. He is thinking about his mother and is not trying to please Miraal.

Therapist/Patient Relationship

While I am thankful that Dr. Haris hasn’t fallen for Miraal, he is clearly very ‘interested’ in her. The way his friend questioned him about the patient and why he was going out of his way to meet her outside the office was something which just shouldn’t have been shown. Although Haris’ reply suggested that he did not want to have this conversation and that he was professional, the viewers also got to know through this scene that he was making an exception. Miraal and Haris only had one scene together in this episode and that too did not add much to the story or their track.

Meeting Haris it seems is not going to help Miraal much since he is not being honest enough with her so far! This was their third meeting yet the session wasn’t convincing enough. So far, he thinks she is ‘disturbed’ and that’s it! If these conversations were used to give the viewers an insight into Miraal’s character, telling us why she is like this, these interactions would have been so much more engaging.

Sabaat Episode 13 Story Review - Extremely Disappointing

Miraal The CEO

Miraal’s father made another decision to please his daughter but this time around he went too far! This was his way of telling Hasan and Anaya who the chosen one was. This man has made Miraal the insensitive, selfish, and controlling person she is yet he takes no responsibility for it. His business rival will do whatever it takes to bring him down therefore it is not going to be easy for Miraal to run this business smoothly. Also, how could her father hand her over the business just like that! She clearly proved that she did not have what it took to make the right decisions under pressure. Also, the fact that Anaya will now be working for Miraal will only make things worse!

Final Remarks

Apart from Hasan’s character, there wasn’t anything remotely appealing about this episode. It was difficult sitting through this episode and watching Miraal’s father make all these foolish decisions is seriously annoying! And this guy’s smile was so creepy!

Sabaat Episode 13 Story Review - Extremely Disappointing

Sabaat Episode 12 Story Review – Mediocre

Tonight’s episode of Sabaat had much-needed character development but it lacked flow altogether. Usman Mukhar’s entry was quite plain, his character didn’t have the same appeal as the one he played in Anaa. It seems like Dr. Haris will be a somewhat simple character. The change in scenery was refreshing, Hasan and Anaya finally got to spend some time together without the tensions in the house. The worst part of this episode was the direction, even those scenes which should have been impactful, lacked impact altogether. The transition from one scene to the other one at times was confusing, to say the least. The camerawork also left a lot to be desired, the close-ups of trees and coffee mugs interrupted the flow of these scenes. Some of the scenes were also written and acted-out in the most disappointing manner. Some of Hasan/Anaya scenes were cute but Anaya’s parents just like every other episode stole the show altogether.

The ‘Honeymoon’

No one really discussed the fact that Miraal set Hasan’s room on fire and how serious the situation was. Even Miraal’s parents’ conversation revolved around something entirely different. Right now Hasan seems like the wisest character since he was the only one who mentioned that going on a honeymoon was not going to solve their problems. Miraal’s father at times is really difficult to understand, her mother’s dialogues tonight also suggested that he was just that! The actor playing the role has been performing really well but his character keeps me guessing just like some of the other characters. Also, there are so many things which we hear about from characters but don’t actually get to watch them on-screen which also makes a lot of difference.

Sabaat Episode 12 Story Review - Mediocre

Hasan and Anaya’s honeymoon started off well, the beautiful locations and their happy faces suggested that we would get to see some great on-screen chemistry and romance. The scenes that followed however were not all impressive. Some of these conversations and scenes were not the least bit romantic. Mawra Hocane definitely performed much more convincingly in these scenes as compared to Ameer Gilani. In some of the scenes, Ameer Gilani seemed rather distant and his expressions were also confusing. The biggest issue with these scenes was how the disappointing cinematography and editing. The editing was extremely choppy which basically affected the overall impact of these scenes. The locations were beautiful and it was good to see Hasan and Anaya bonding but this could have been covered in a much better way.

Miraal Decides To Get Help

Finally, Miraal decided to get help but just like every other big development in this drama, this one too was covered in the least impactful way possible! Miraal’s confusion and fears were translated convincingly on screen in the past few weeks but the final realization just wasn’t compelling enough. Although it was good to see her affectionate side when she hugged her mother, the background score made no sense!! Miraal’s deceased naani was already haunting her therefore she was probably scared of losing her mother as well therefore she turned to her friend for help. As far as I know she should have gone to a clinical psychologist first but as it turns out Dr. Haris, the man most of us had been waiting for, is a psychiatrist. Although I had been waiting for Usman Mukhtar’s entry in the play, I must say that I wasn’t too impressed with the interactions between Miraal and her doctor. His pants which matched with the sofa made me laugh! Was it planned or a coincidence? Dr. Harris’ evaluation of Miraal’s state of mind was interesting but the preview of the next episode suggested that he will fall for her! I hope that doesn’t happen this soon.

Sabaat Episode 12 Story Review - Mediocre

The dialogues and situations covering the slight change in Miraal were too plain. After this episode, I have little hope that this drama will actually shed some light on Miraal’s mental health or bad parenting. Miraal’s father has played a major role in making her the monster that she is, I hope that the writer sheds some light on that at some point. Although I feel for Miraal’s mother and the fact that she is trying her best to avoid conflict makes her likable but Laila Zuberi’s performance has not been too impressive.

Anaya’s Parents

I am glad that Anaya’s parents got enough screen time tonight and they have not been relegated to the background. The empty nest syndrome was reflected convincingly through these scenes. It was especially refreshing watching a couple of their age trying to support each other. Going to the cinema scene was just too cute! Seemi Raheel and Syed Muhammad Ahmed are extremely adorable in this role. It is good to see two different kinds of parents in this drama. It also goes to show how important it is for the parents to raise their children as a ‘team’.

Sabaat Episode 12 Story Review - Mediocre

Final Remarks

This episode had some important developments but it wasn’t impactful enough. The preview of the next episode suggested that Hasan’s father might not like the idea that Anaya should work in his office. He will also continue to spoil Miraal further! The most disappointing part of this preview was Dr. Harris’ scene, I really hope he does not fall in love with Miraal just like that! I really think that this drama needs to pick up pace, some of the conversations truly test your patience!

Sabaat Episode 11 Story Review – Realistic

This latest episode of Sabaat showed some character development and laid down the foundations for the much-needed progress in the story which we all have been waiting for. Hasan and Anaya finally got married. The ceremonies and everyone’s reactions were covered convincingly. This entire episode had a realistic feel to it. Miraal’s madness continued, her father was manipulated into siding with her yet again but the best part of this episode was Hasan and Anaya’s sweet relationship. The romance and their mature personalities made their scenes a treat to watch. Usman Mukhtar will finally make an appearance next week therefore all those viewers who initially tuned into this drama for him must watch the upcoming episode!

The Wedding

I really enjoyed watching a traditional wedding on-screen with the joota chupai and doodh pilai perhaps because the weddings we watch in dramas nowadays are covered differently. This entire wedding had a real feel to it, from the preparations to the actual function, it looked like these were scenes from an actual wedding. Anaya’s father’s fears were in a subtle manner translated on screen. It was also good to see Hasan’s father going ahead with everything genuinely until Miraal set the room on fire! This step by Miraal was extreme but it made perfect sense. Someone like her would actually do whatever it took to take things in her control.

In the previous episode, the viewers were shown how Miraal was losing her grip. In this episode, we watched the aftermath of everything she had been feeling for weeks. First Hasan and then Ali, she was more desperate than ever to show everyone what she was capable of doing if things did not go as she planned.

Sabaat Episode 11 Story Review - Realistic

Hasan handled the situation in a mature manner. His character growth is much more convincing and likable now. Miraal’s father seems is actually scared of her now and does not want to face her ‘wrath’. Every time her father makes such decisions to please her, he gives her more control. That is how he must have contributed to making her the monster she is. Hasan covered up intelligently and ultimately with his mother’s support whatever Miraal did had little impact on their relationship.

I absolutely loved Mawra Hocane’s performance tonight especially when she was left alone after everyone rushed to call the rescue services. Anaya has always been shown as a sensible young lady therefore the fact she was willing to be more flexible made perfect sense. Anaya and Hasan’s scenes in her house showed that all they needed was each other to be happy, no big ceremonies. Their relationship also shows how easy it is for someone to be happy if they choose to enjoy little things in life, like a conversation or an interaction with someone you love. Hasan was equally lovable when he decided to go to Anaya’s place with her family members instead of his own car. These small gestures added more meaning to their scenes.

Miraal’s Madness

Miraal’s madness continued in this episode as well. The preview of the next episode made it quite clear why she was shown going crazier than ever! On the one hand, we have characters like Hasan and Anaya who find happiness in everything, and on the other hand there is Miraal who is constantly finding reasons to hate people. She is full of hatred and is simply incapable of loving anyone at all. Her friend is turning out to be her biggest supporter and that is obviously the only reason that she is with her all the time!

Miraal’s meeting with Ali’s mother showed how difficult it was for her to let go and move on. She really needs professional help, I am waiting to find out how she ultimately ends up getting the helps she so desperately is in need of! When Miraal was headed towards Ali’s house her thoughts suggested that she saw herself as the ‘victim’! I hope Miraal’s character development in the upcoming episode is worth the wait since for now, Miraal’s character lacks the layers needed to make it more appealing.

Sabaat Episode 11 Story Review - Realistic

Final Remarks

Tonight’s episode of Sabaat was entertaining overall. Anaya and Hasan make a cute on-screen couple. It was also good to see Hasan’s mother playing an active role within the family set up since for the longest time her character did not have screen presence. I am sure many of you are looking forward to the next episode because of obvious reasons ;) I just hope that Usman Mukhtar does not make an entry in the last scene!

Sabaat Episode 10 Story Review – Interesting

Tonight’s episode of Sabaat focused entirely on Hasan and Anaya’s marriage, which will finally take place in the upcoming episode. Just like every other episode, this one also showed Miraal’s controlling side. Ali literally ran away, he turned out to be wise after all! The most interesting aspect of this episode was that for a change Miraal’s actual insecurities were spelled out in a way that for the first time I could connect to her character. This character could have been so much more interesting if these inner insecurities were presented on-screen just as often as Miraal’s outward behavior has been shown continuously. Sabaat’s OST has the most meaningful lyrics and it has been sung beautifully too but the director has completely failed to use it effectively. Some sense prevailed tonight and it was a much more interesting episode especially when compared to some of the previous episodes.

Miraal Is Losing Her Grip

Miraal did everything in her power to ensure that Hasan and Anaya do not get married. So far, it is pretty clear that if something does not go the way Miraal planned it she considers it an insult. Her reactions to even the most minor things show that she expects everyone around her to do exactly what she wants and if they don’t do it, she ‘disowns’ them. She did so with her father, brother, and even her friend. When she asked her friend to stay with her and she was hesitant, Miraal’s instantly said that she did not want her to come tomorrow either if she wasn’t going to stay tonight. She planned to get married to Ali secretly just to hurt her father although she cannot even stand him. The fact that Ali left her like that was a big blow to Miraal’s ego and it fanned her insecurities.

Sabaat Episode 10 Story Review - Interesting

For the first time, naani’s scenes gave an insight into Miraal’s actual insecurity because of which she was just as scared inside as she was confident on the outside. In her heart, Miraal knows that she is not a likable person therefore she is afraid of being left alone. She probably knows subconsciously that she won’t find anyone who would dance to her tune all the time. This scene helped me understand why Miraal was so upset. Although she is gradually realizing that she is losing her grip on things, she continues to try harder to pressurize her family members. Sarah Khan performed well tonight and for a change, Miraal’s character wasn’t just about controlling Hasan and her father.

Hasan and Anaya

Hasan and Anaya’s conversations tonight were cute. A few weeks back I thought I would never warm up to their couple but I find them really cute now. Hasan appears to be much more mature now and watching him show some flexibility to mend the relationship with his father was definitely good. The father too is acting much more responsibly now and not like a spoiled kid! This whole track makes much more sense right now than it ever did. Also, I am really glad that the story can finally move forward once they get married because so many episodes were dedicated to this particular track! Mawra Hocane and Ameer Gilani look good together now that they are no longer university students trying to figure things out. This character development has definitely added more appeal to Hasan/Anaya track. The preparations for the wedding on both sides were covered well with some emotional scenes in between.

Sabaat Episode 10 Story Review - Interesting

Anaya and her father’s scene in this episode reminded me of Durr-e-Shehwar’s emotional conversations with her Aba. Muhammad Ahmed and Mawra Hocane are exceptionally convincing as the father/daughter who share a really special bond. The dialogues were meaningful and not just relevant with reference to Anaya’s situation but they were also even more well-suited for Miraal’s present condition. She truly is someone who has given hate and grudges so much of a space in her heart and mind that there is no place for love. Perhaps if she had been raised by a father who had such conversations with her instead of rewarding her with material things, she would have turned out to be an entirely different person.

Final Remarks

This was an entertaining episode overall with some meaningful scenes. The story is finally moving forward. Looks like Usman Mukhtar fans will have to wait even longer! Have you warmed up to Hasan and Anaya’s track yet or not?

Sabaat Episode 1 Story Review – Few Surprises

I was eagerly looking forward to this first episode because the teasers were quite promising. My first impression of the drama is actually quite different from what I was expecting it to be. Firstly, I was looking forward to watching Sarah Khan in a different role and was more excited about that than Mawra’s role in the drama. After watching this first episode however I am pleasantly surprised with Mawra’s character and performance. The leading characters are somewhat clichéd – the modern girl who is shallow and the dupatta clad girl who has a completely different outlook towards life.

First Impressions

I definitely enjoyed watching Anaya’s (Mawra Hocane) scenes with her parents more than anything else in this first episode. Syed Muhammad Ahmed is such a graceful and convincing actor, no one plays the loving and caring father better than him. The chemistry he shares with all his on-screen daughters is exceptional every single time. Apart from that, I was expecting Miraal (Sarah Khan) to be a more layered character. The first impression of Miraal is that of a spoiled brat, nothing less and nothing more. Everything from the conversation Miraal’s parents had about her to her interactions with all the other characters suggested just that. She likes all the attention she gets, likes to have her own way and speaks her mind, not always in a good way! Apart from that, she is pretty sure that she can ‘buy’ anything and anyone with her money. Miraal’s father is greatly responsible for shaping up her personality in such a way that she feels entitled to everything and does not feel the need to work for anything, whether it is something material or love and attention. Her fiancé Ali (Jahanzeb Khan) is another person who is more than willing to put up with her attitude.Sabaat Episode 1 Story Review - Few Surprises

Many of the dialogues clearly suggested that Miraal has a shallow personality. She is materialistic and cannot see past the branded clothes and interior. Sarah Khan’s performance was decent enough, she looked and acted the role. I am waiting to see if there is more to her character. Eventually, her character perhaps will go through a transformation therefore hopefully it will have more layers as the story progresses. Miraal’s interaction with her nano reminded me of Falak’s relationship with her nano in Shehr-e-Zaat. Miraal’s relationship with her brother Hasan (Ameer Gilani) didn’t have that spark either. The only person she genuinely seems to be close to is her father, perhaps because he does exactly what she wants. Considering the fact that this is Ameer Gilani’s first play, his acting was up to the mark, his overall look, however, is a different story! He looked slightly older for the role as well.

Anaya’s character has a lot to offer. She is driven, affectionate and confident. The confident part of her personality was the most refreshing element since otherwise, her character would have been too stereotypical. The way Anaya welcomed her father and the manner in which this family celebrates everything was the best part of tonight’s episode. The fact that one confrontation with Anaya led Hasan to think about his life and choices was, in my opinion, an unconvincing development. The preview of the next episode suggested that I could be wrong!Sabaat Episode 1 Story Review - Few Surprises

Final Remarks

No one can beat Shehzad Kashmiri when it comes to cinematography but the excessive use of background score especially in the opening scenes was disappointing. The opening scenes were not the best since we were rushed from one scene to the other. The rest of the episode, however, was well directed and put together. Shehzad Kashmiri concentrates on visuals a lot therefore it was not surprising that this episode was visually appealing. The characters and their settings are definitely not new. For now, Anaya’s track has my undivided attention although I am not too excited about the on-screen pair just yet. The producers probably know that most of the people might be watching this drama because of Usman Mukhtar therefore they are going to make the fans wait for his character. Many of the leading blogs/websites promoted this drama as Mawra Hocane’s next play which was rather odd! I am however glad that Mawra Hocane acted well and I hope that she continues to be this good as Anaya.

The preview of the next episode suggested that Hasan will change his ways and Miraal will not be supporting him.

Saba Rizwan (The girl who was insulted) replies to Sahir Lodhi

Sahir Lodhi has received quite a backlash against his behaviour in debating competition and has apologised quite a few times. I believe in accepting apologies but in this case, just couldn’t get out of my head, the state of mind of that young lady who was cut off in the middle of her debate by an anchor who was so indignant as if Quaid e Azam is his private property, and of those parents whose daughter she must have been.

In a recent video upload, that girl Saba Rizwan has replied to Sahir in no uncertain terms that his apology doesn’t diminish the effects of what he has done. She said he has asked for forgiveness over his crude behaviour but never once for insulting a female on National Television, being watched live all over the world.

She went on to say that Sahir has emphasised that his angry words were depicted out of context and nobody showed his whole statement. So what about her? Did Sahir let her complete her words. No, he picked up one word and started literally shouting at her. She wasn’t allowed to complete either and after listening to him, I wonder how she even managed to finish her debate.

Then she read the whole poetry and announced boycotting that competition. She called debating her passion and that she will not quit it, rather will find a more respectable platform to exercise her talent.

Kuddos to that girl for speaking so calmly, so eloquently and pointing out his flawed apology. In a country, where majority of females suffer low esteem due to such type of men, a warning notice was certainly not enough. Pemra should ban Sahir Lodhi on the basis of gross misconduct and abusive behaviour towards females. No man , inside the house or outside should be allowed to insult or degrade a woman and then apologise after his verbal diarrhoea has subsided. And anyone who does that, should be made an example by punishment so others would get the idea straight that mumbling an apology afterwards does not cut it. Not at all.

All the best to Saba Rizwan in all her future endeavours.

Saba Rizwan – The Girl Bashed By Sahir Lodhi Will Now Host Her Own Show

Saba Rizwan, the girl bashed on air by Sahir Lodhi, is soon going to host a TV show on one of the leading channels of Pakistan. The show will air after the month of Ramazan, it will be based on women empowerment and issues related to women and their rights.

While hosting a Ramazan transmission on TV one, Sahir Lodhi attracted some unwanted controversy when he went overboard in response to Saba Rizwan’s speech where she called over Quaid-e-Azam to ‘come and see what has happened to our country.’

Ever since the incident went viral, everyone came forward to Saba’s support and we wish her the best of luck for her upcoming venture!
