PEMRA Issues Notice To Geo Entertainment For Showing Game Shows During Ramazan

The holy month of Ramazan is here and it’s the chance to enhance our knowledge about Islam.

With so many channels and shows these days, it is difficult to keep tabs on everything that’s being aired, however, Pemra doesn’t fail to stay active on a few matters, to say the least.

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has issued show cause notices to three TV channels, including Geo Entertainment, for violating the guidelines regarding Ramazan transmission.

Pemra accused the channels of broadcasting the quiz programmes before 9 pm in violation of para V of the directions.

The watchdog had issued guidelines for media outlets to follow during the month of Ramazan and the notification stated that the game shows would not be aired on any channel before 9 PM. Moreover, the game shows will be banned completely during last ten days of Ramazan.

Pemra Issues Legal Notice To ARY Digital For Jeeto Pakistan

Ramzan is the month of blessings but Ramzan shows have turned the holy month into prize-winning competitions. However, Pemra is taking action to finish this growing trend by restricting Gameshows to be aired only after 9 pm.

After Geo Tv, Pemra has now issued a legal notice to ARY Digital after the channel failed to comply with the watchdog’s orders and “Jeeto Pakistan” popular game show hosted by Fahad Mustafa was aired at 8 pm.

Pemra has asked the channel for a reply within 3 days and the CEO himself should appear before the High Court Islamabad.

PEMRA Issues A Notice Against Drama Serial Udaari

In a shocking development PEMRA issued a notice to HUM TV after the last episode of drama serial Udaari went on air on Sunday 8th of May. Drama serial Udaari is a joint production of MD Productions and Kashaf foundation. The drama has been written by the famous writer Farhat Ishtiaq and is inspired from real life events. The drama serial attempts to raise awareness about the issue of child abuse.

The last episode showed Ahsan Khan’s character harassing Urwa Hocane’s character when she goes to his house to get something. Ahsan Khan’s character’s real intentions were revealed in the last two episodes. PEMRA has taken ‘notice’ of this new development because they say that they got many complaints from the viewers especially the parents because they thought that this drama was not a family drama. According to the experts at PEMRA the scenes and events that have been shown in the last two episodes show the dirty mindset of those who are behind this show and these scenes are against the ‘societal norms’!!!

Udaari is being liked by the viewers for a different storyline and for handling a very sensitive subject extremely sensitively but it looks like PEMRA tends to disagree.

PEMRA Increases Taxes on Foreign Content – Will It Discourage The Channels?

0

There is good news for all the foreign drama haters out there who have been against the airing of foreign shows since the very first day. PEMRA has recently announced that there will be an increased tax on foreign content to protect the local industry from foreign competition. It is about time they took this step to protect our prospering industry from foreign competition.

photo(129)

The trend of foreign shows started with the channel Urdu 1 which started airing Turkish and Indian shows. After the stupendous success of Ishq Mamnu, various other Pakistani channels also started airing Turkish shows. Even now a very famous Turkish show Fatima Gul is being aired on Urdu 1 which has received a remarkable response from audiences. Other Turkish shows include Fareb, Fariha, Bewafaai, Noor that airs on different Pakistani channels like Geo TV, Express and Urdu 1. The sad part is that the story did not end here and Indian shows also started airing on different Pakistani channels on prime slots which irked the viewers to no end. Many celebrities like Faisal Qureshi, Samina Peerzada, Shahood Alvi, Aijaz Aslam, Saba Hameed and many others have been seen voicing their protest against the airing of foreign content on various channels. Other than that there are many Indian shows like Qubool Hai, Badde Ache Lagte Hai, Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke, Anamika, Hitler Didi that airs on the channel Express and Geo TV. Recently Hum TV also aired the promos of a Turkish show which shocked and disappointed the audiences. What will be the future of all these shows now?

Following Urdu 1’s lead, Geo has recently launched a new channel Geo Kahani which features Indian, Turkish and Pakistani content. Urdu 1 followed by Geo and Express air the largest number of foreign shows and the increased tax will not be good for them as this might reduce their profit margin by a huge amount. Geo Kahani and Urdu 1 which airs almost 90% foreign content will be in big trouble now!

There are mixed views about the new policy to increase taxes. Here are a few comments posted by various people on Facebook:

photo(130)

“Now that is a big step to protect our culture, this tax should increase every year”

“They were buying them cheap now they will have to spend money. I hope this tax is strictly enforced”

“Stupid decision, you can’t restrict the right of people to entertainment, they will watch what they like…”

“The sad part is that that tax generated will not be used to support and promote our industry…. sorry for being pessimistic but that is how it works”

“But why to promote foreign dramas on Pakistani channels? Our industry is full of talent! Fine you can’t restrict anybody choices if they want to see these shows but it is better if they enjoy through other sources of course. Not acceptable on Pakistani channels!”

“Thank God! Something very much needed & a sensible decision”

“No worries our channel owners are filthy rich, they will pay or they will bribe the authorities and will air those crap!”

“So happy to hear that but let’s see to what extent this policy is implemented”

“Are you kidding! How would it stop them? It is a TV channel and would happily pay the government”

I personally think this is a major step towards discouraging foreign content shown on local channels. If this new policy is effectively implemented then it may reduce the amount of foreign content on different channels. The complete removal of such foreign shows may take a while as there are some loyal viewers of foreign content.

So what do you guys think about this new policy? Will it reduce the amount of foreign content aired on different Pakistani channels?

It merits mentioning here that according to the code of conduct adopted in 2006 by Pemra, the Pakistani TV channels are allowed to allocate 6 percent of the total airtime to the Indian content, while they can dedicate 4 percent of the same to content from other countries. The Pakistani channels are allowed to air foreign content in order to attract more viewers and develop the media industry.

PEMRA Directs TV Channels To Monitor Their Morning Shows

In this era of morning shows, there is hardly any one morning when the content or theme of the show is of ant social, academic or intellectual benefit to its audience or just anyone in the society. They range from silly superficial themes to some downright inappropriate acts during the early hours of the day.

PEMRA Directs TV Channels To Monitor Their Morning Shows

Pakistanis are often left wondering if there is any kind of check and control over these TV Channels and their morning shows regarding the quality of their content.

There is one such institution actually, even though it usually does not interfere due to the balancing act between freedom of expression and protection of societal moral values.

PEMRA Directs TV Channels To Monitor Their Morning Shows

After a lot of social media backlash against a particular morning show where the host had organised a dance competition between young kids on cheap Bollywood item numbers, PEMRA have taken notice. It has clearly issued directives to the TV Channels to monitor the content of their morning shows viligantly.

The trend is causing unrest and behavioral disturbance among the viewers being not only in violation of the commonly accepted standards of decency but also the socio-cultural norms of Pakistani society.”

In this context, viewers are criticizing PEMRA on Twitter for allowing such indecent advertisements. Pertinently, viewers are of the view that airing advertisements regarding general consumer products like biscuits in such a bizarre manner where the visuals do not commensurate with the use of the products is unwarranted and needs to be looked into. Pemra Bans Amir Liaquat

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has banned talk show host Amir Liaquat and his show ‘Aisay Nahi Chalay Ga’ on BOL News.

According to PEMRA, Amir Liaquat shall not host any programme or appear on any TV in any manner, including (but not limited to) as a guest, analyst, reporter, actor, in audio, video beeper, promo/advertisement of his programme or in person, in any manner whatsoever, on BOL News with an immediate effect.

The Pemra statement further stated if Liaquat “continues to abuse freedom of speech and violates the Pemra Code of Conduct 2015, Pemra Ordinance 2002, and Rules and Regulations on any other TV channel(s), the authority shall invoke Section 27 of Pemra Ordinance 2002 against that TV channel.”

The notification forbade Amir Liaquat from declaring anyone kaafir or ghaddar as according to the constitution of Pakistan, the right to do that exists only with the Superior Judiciary or the Parliament.

The ban came after social activist Jibran Nasir filed an official complaint with the Pemra against TV anchor for ‘maligning’ him. Pemra took the decision of banning Amir after ‘monitoring’ him for several weeks. “During several weeks it has been monitored that Amir Liaquat host of the programme Aisay Nahi Chalay Ga, in the episodes broadcast on BOL News from January 2, 2017 to January 24, 2017, has willfully and repeatedly made statements and allegations which tantamount to hate speech, derogatory remarks, incitement to violence against citizens and casting accusation of being anti-state and anti-Islam, on various individuals.”

PEMRA has issued many notices recently to different channels. In another move PEMRA issued another notice to Geo Entertainment and also banned Aamir Liaquat’s game show Inaam Ghur which airs in the month of Ramzan specifically. The show has been banned for 3 days from 28th June to 30th June. After that the host has to apologize on the show which will air on 1st July for all the mistakes which have been pinpointed by PEMRA in the notice. The host Aamir Liaquat will apologize to all the viewers in the beginning of his show and will follow the code of conduct from now on.

aamir liaquat

The reasons for banning the show for 3 days and asking for a live apology on television were many. Firstly, the reason was that Aamir Liaquat pretended to be a woman who was trying to commit suicide by hanging from the fan. Secondly, a man was shown cursing on live TV after he won a prize. Thirdly, a woman who called on the show used foul language. Fourthly, the host Aamir Liaquat danced holding a pole in one of the shows which was considered obscene by the members.

The representative of Geo TV asked the council to give him 15 days to give a reply to all these complaints. PEMRA has asked Geo to give an answer not later than the 3rd day of Eid.

PEMRA also said in its notice that next time anyone wants to use the uniform of the armed forces for commercial purposes, they have to take permission from ISPR first. They also asked game show hosts to follow the rules set by the society and adhere to the cultural values of the country.

The supporters of the show condemned this action on twitter.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 9 Story Review – Valid Arguments

I love how every episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat has a valid argument against the age-old customs and the writer convincingly questions different norms. Faiza Iftikhar has given us many memorable female characters before as well and this time around Zainab and Nargis are two such characters. The main lead Rakhshi is a rather typical character but she has never been one of those annoying female characters who have nothing but bechargi to offer. Zainab and Nargis however stand out for completely different reasons. Their tracks have been used convincingly to question stereotypes and most importantly to question the kind of expectations families have from women. Aslam is as flawed as many of the heroes penned down by a writer who is not afraid to tell the story of such people. There were so many heart-warming moments tonight and this episode also had many of those discussions which would definitely give parents so much to reflect upon. Niggi’s track yet again provided some comic relief since the way it was handled and played out was amusing. Rakhshi finally accepted Nargis as her mother and Aslam decided to take practical measures without thinking about the consequences. It seems as if this story is also headed in the same direction as Zainab’s story.

Feelings Matter

I am going to be really honest and say that Zainab’s conversations with her mother stood out for me more than any other in this episode. In fact, all her dialogues and conversations have been penned down beautifully throughout. She tends to point out things that are seldom pointed out in our dramas with such honesty. Uzma Hassan has been outstanding in this role since you feel everything her character is going through at a given moment. Her reaction and dialogues when her mother showered her with love after finding out that her husband had hurt her physically were precious. Her mother is a ‘caring’ person who will not allow anyone to ‘hurt’ her daughter yet she did not even try to stop her son from forcing Zainab to live a life she did not want to live. This track has done such an amazing job of highlighting how troublesome such arranged marriages can be. It also shows that parents should understand that their children’s feelings matter since most often parents think their only role is to ‘protect’ their children and sometimes they take on this role so seriously that they end up making such decisions. Even in this day and age so many women are forced to marry against their will and they are expected to do so since they ‘owe’ it to their family, Pehli Si Mohabbat is highlighting just how problematic this trend is.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 9 Story Review – Valid Arguments

Even after everything Zainab has said to her mother, she still instantly refused to get Aslam married to Rakhshi. Once again the reason was that these two were already romantically involved! Besides that, pleasing family members at the expense of children’s happiness is considered something perfectly normal by many! Nargis’ conversation with Faiz Ullah about consent was another such exchange that showed how ‘casually’ the girl’s consent is taken in such a situation. All these tracks point out the hypocrisy of a society which proudly boasts of a strong family system yet the feelings of the youngsters in a household are given absolutely no importance. There is a hierarchy in every house and like Faiz Ullah pointed out it is considered ‘inappropriate’ for the older brother or father to ask for the girl’s consent. I am glad we have characters such as Zainab and Nargis to educate those around them.

The Blackmail Ends

Niggi’s blackmail which had been going on for two weeks ended with some intense and amusing scenes. Nargis is a strong woman who knows how to handle such situations and I must say that this scene was shot so well. Rabia Butt and the actress playing Niggi’s role did exceptionally well in this scene. Maya Ali was equally convincing as the scared young girl who did not know how to handle this situation. The way Niggi backed out was hilarious! Aslam also decided to put his foot down this time around and he came up with a plan of his own to counter Niggi’s ongoing blackmail. This scene was amusing and Shehryar Munawar acted so well in it. Rakhshi finally trusts Nargis and now she has someone to confide in. We saw a step-mother taking a stand for her step-daughter and not judging her – that was parenting done right! This was such a powerful and emotional scene.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 9 Story Review – Valid Arguments

Breaking The Engagement

Aslam decided to break the engagement tonight, a step that will get him into a lot of trouble yet he knows that he doesn’t have a lot of time now therefore he needed to do something quickly. I felt for poor Bushra since as Zainab pointed out she was completely innocent. Aslam was as ‘polite’ and honest as he could be but obviously his mamoo and family are not going to ‘understand’ the situation. The preview of the next episode showed that this time around Aslam’s mother will not repeat the mistake she made last time.

Final Remarks

Tonight’s episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat was yet another meaningful episode with a little bit of everything. This was the kind of episode that makes you laugh and cry at the same time! The preview of the next episode was really exciting; I can’t wait to watch what happens next.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 8 Story Review – The Blackmail

Tonight’s episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat was engaging throughout and it laid the foundation for the most important development in the upcoming episode. I must say that I find every episode of this drama meaningful and I find myself completely invested in everyone’s story. Every character has been etched-out convincingly, all of these characters are also layered hence the surprises every now and then. Apart from this, the drama so far has been well-paced, as well. Tonight, Niggi’s track added light-hearted moments to an otherwise serious episode even though she was blackmailing Aslam and Rakhshi, causing problems for them. Zainab and Aslam’s scenes together are always a treat to watch. Uzma Hassan is an exceptional actress and Shehryar Munawar is adorable as the younger brother who is a confidant and a friend. Akram, Aslam, and Zainab are all different individuals altogether, yet no one is black and white. All of them have their strengths and weaknesses which makes these characters relatable and their stories more interesting.

The Blackmailing Continues

Tonight’s episode focused a great deal on Niggi’s blackmailing. She was shown making the most of the situation as she understood that Aslam and Rakhshi were in a vulnerable situation. Niggi’s demands continued to increase with time until she asked for Rakhshi’s mother’s jewelry and that is when Rakhshi felt truly helpless. Eventually, Nargis is going to step in and that is when Rakhshi will finally start appreciating her. Even though Niggi is a blackmailer but her scenes have been light-hearted and the actress playing the role has nailed their light-heartedness completely! At the same time, Maya Ali made it easier to understand what Rakhshi was going through because of this ongoing blackmailing. On the other hand, Aslam was merely going with the flow and not thinking much about the consequences. Through this track, Rakhshi will finally start trusting Niggi. That is what I truly appreciate about the script so far, everything leads to something important.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 8 Story Review – The Blackmail

The Proposal

We found out today that Nawaz’s son is the same man Zainab was in love with. This is another track that will be linked to the other tracks in the story. Rakhshi was too young at the time and therefore does not know that this is the same man. Faiz Ullah is more than willing to get his daughter married to an older man but Nargis once again was being fair. Nargis’ character is turning out to be the best female character in this drama. She is compassionate and at the same time, she knows how to tell someone off when they deserve it! Rabia Butt is brilliant as Nargis. She has been betrayed and instead of being bitter, she does not want Rakhshi to be betrayed in the same manner. After knowing about the proposal, Aslam decided to visit his sister so that he could ask for her advice. Rakhshi is not the kind of girl who can voice her opinion therefore this love story is likely to take a few tragic turns in the upcoming episodes. I liked Faiz Ullah’s conversation with Akram; he handled the situation wisely. Akram is an impulsive fool who is constantly worried about what others are thinking and talking about. His dialogues about daughters were sad!

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 8 Story Review – The Blackmail

Zainab’s Track

So, we found out today the reason for Murad’s resentment and anger. He knows that Zainab was in love with someone else and he feels that he is not worthy of her love or attention. Zainab’s attitude also goes to show that she simply cannot express herself any other way when she is around him. Her conversation with Aslam also suggested that she blamed herself more than she blamed Murad. These dialogues explained beautifully how difficult it is for people to move on and how difficult it is to make marriages work when such secrets are revealed. Murad’s apology came as a pleasant surprise even though he should not be easily forgiven.

Aslam is the younger brother who loves his aapa but he is not in a position to do much. Zainab has completely resigned to her fate and it is almost as if she feels nothing. Will she give Murad a chance? And has she really moved on? The scenes in one of the previous episodes suggested that she could not let go of the memories, something she mentioned in her conversation with Aslam as well. Her situation is complex and even though both these individuals are completely capable of loving and making a marriage work, they met in the most unfortunate circumstances. This track gives such an important message – marriages do not guarantee happy endings and everything does not magically work out!

Final Remarks

Pehli Si Mohabbat is turning out to be an interesting drama that is much more than just another love story. I think the biggest success of this drama is how it highlights the importance of consent and shows the ugly side of arranged marriages. The writer has also succeeded in breaking quite a few stereotypes. The next episode is going to exciting!

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 7 Story Review – Meaningful Entertainment

Pehli Si Mohabbat continues to be a classic Faiza Iftikhar drama because it does not have any dramatic twists and turns but the script has enough substance to keep you coming back for more. There have been no desperate attempts to entice the viewers, which I personally like since sometimes that is all you need to unwind on a Saturday night! Every week we get to know a little bit more about all the characters and some scenes are dedicated to the main love story which is gradually moving forward. Aslam and Rakhshi’s love story continues to be the most well-represented example of two immature people who feel on top of the world when they are with each other but do not realize what an ugly turn their lives can take if they ever get caught. Maya Ali and Shehryar Munawar have translated this immaturity convincingly on-screen even though they are playing roles much younger than their actual age.

Once again, I really enjoyed watching those scenes which covered the ‘everyday’ life of these characters…those daily interactions of family members such as Aslam asking his mother for money or Ishrat asking him to help her out. Zainab’s track is gradually unfolding as well; Uzma Hassan and Paras Masroor’s performed brilliantly tonight. Also, for a change it was good to see Akram communicating with his family members in a ‘normal’ manner, he is capable of being nice after all! Slowly the hatred against Rakhshi’s father is dying down and things are returning to normal. The OST is beautiful and it has been used intelligently by the director throughout.

The Blackmail

Tonight’s episode opened with the scenes introducing Niggi’s character. Her comment about Aslam calling her meri dulhan was so relatable for me since that is something I have witnessed myself so many times! Niggi however turned out to be a blackmailer. The fact that Aslam trusted her so much went to show just how immature he was. Even though Rakhshi is relatively more sensible but she is always swayed away and never has the courage to walk out of such situations. She gives in to the temptation since she is young and in love. This was one mulaqat which will cost Aslam more than he bargained for, quite literally! I am glad that Aslam’s present lifestyle and his carelessness have been highlighted repeatedly through different conversations. Everyone else around him can see that he is not responsible enough to get married and it further endorses his immaturity. That also explains why he would take all these risks and be silly enough to think that he can eventually somehow get married to Rakhshi without getting proper education or earning a living! His focus is on the romance entirely and he is not paying much heed to the practical aspect of the situation. Rakhshi does not have the courage to take a stand and also understands the tragedy that might hit soon but unless Aslam sends the proposal, she is completely helpless.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 7 Story Review – Meaningful Entertainment

Zainab’s Track

It was quite evident before too that Zainab was not happy with her life but tonight the viewers got to watch firsthand how her husband treats her. He called her a zinda lash which would suggest that she was never able to accept this marriage. This track is meaningful because it represents the lives of so many such women who are forced to marry someone because their families are too scared of marrying them off to the man they love! Zainab’s husband could tell just how desperate her family was to marry her off and that she is not welcomed at her parents’ house. Zainab has resigned to her fate because she knows that she has no other choice. Although we get to watch abusive marriages often on screen, this track shows things from a different perspective – women’s consent and feelings are not flexible!

Nargis’ Backstory

Most of Nargis’ scene revolved around her monitoring Rakhshi’s moves, these scenes are getting repetitive and I am waiting for the time when Rakhshi will eventually confide in her. Rakhshi’s opinion about her stepmother is based on the general impression of such mothers therefore many of the problems faced by Nargis are a result of how people around her judge her past and present based on preconceived notions. Tonight’s episode showed that Nargis’ heart had also been broken by a man who used her to secure his future. Is that the reason why she is concerned about Rakhshi? In one of the previous episodes, she told Rakhshi not to trust anyone, now we know where these warnings are coming from. Even though she keeps on saying that she is keeping an eye on Rakhshi because she doesn’t want anyone to blame her for anything wrong that Rakhshi does but now it seems as if she is in her own way looking out for her. Rabia Butt’s performance has been spot on throughout.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 7 Story Review – Meaningful Entertainment

Final Remarks

This was another episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat which was for the most part engaging and there were some scenes that were somewhat repetitive. Watching this drama has been like reading a novel, everything is shown in detail and I especially like the fact that the writer never leaves anything to the viewers’ imagination. Every character has a story to tell and there are no heroes and heroines in this one, just normal people whose story has been told effectively. Pehli Si Mohabbat will not keep you at the edge of your seat because it does not attempt to do so but it will keep you interested and involved. This drama definitely passes as meaningful entertainment.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 6 Story Review – Happiness Is Secondary

Pehli Si Mohabbat is much more than just another love story which is why I chose to review this particular drama. Faiza Iftikhar always makes sure that even the simplest of stories written by her highlight one of those social issues which are usually accepted as ‘normal’. Apart from this, I have particularly enjoyed watching some of the ‘every day’ scenes shown in the drama. The fact that there are no extraordinary characters in the drama but the story revolves around people we see around us on daily basis makes it more relatable. The credit for that goes to the writer as well for telling stories of people who are so common that hardly anyone chooses to narrate their stories. Bhola was one such character and now I feel Rakhshi and Aslam are such leading characters as well. In these 6 weeks, I have warmed up to all the main characters, and a new episode every week feels as if I am getting to look into the lives of these ordinary people who tell a story which might be ghar ghar ki kahani.

Some Random Thoughts

Arranged marriages are a reality in Pakistan, they are also glorified extensively since most often the loyalty of a child towards their parents is gauged based on how quickly they accept the suitor chosen for them by their parents. Many of these marriages are successful but there are also those loveless forced marriages that wouldn’t have taken place if someone like Akram was willing to respect the feelings and choices of the person who was being married. We have watched many such love stories where parents become the samaj ki deewar but I do feel that Pehli Si Mohabbat highlights the way such decisions affect people more than any other drama has. It makes you reflect upon the family system and the authority which the head of the family enjoys and very often exploits in our society.

The writer has also aptly highlighted the double standards that exist in our society. In the previous episode, Rakhshi’s dialogues pointed out these double standards with the utmost clarity when she told Aslam that his friend would be delighted to know that he was having an affair but will never allow his sister to continue being friends with the girl he was having an affair with. It is true that in our society women bear the brunt more than the man even when both of them are doing something which is considered ‘immoral’ or unacceptable. Nargis’ character and her track have also been the highlight of every single episode. The pressure of society sometimes makes it difficult for someone like her to settle down because of the judgmental nature of people in general. I can easily relate everything that is being shown to the criticism some of the actresses get even when they decide to leave showbiz and cover their heads! It is a fact that people in our society judge others as a pastime without thinking about the consequences of their actions and they never hold themselves accountable in the same manner.

I am not particularly happy with Akram’s character but then I do feel that he is a true representative of all those heads of family who do not let people they are responsible for live their lives freely. The first two episodes, however, showed a different side of him, therefore, I found his character slightly confusing in the beginning; however, it is pretty clear that he is a rigid and stubborn man who does not care about anyone’s feelings.

Zainab’s track adds depth to Aslam and Rakhshi’s track. It also gives Akram and Rakhshi’s track a backstory since they were both influenced by Zainab’s past. Even Ishrat’s scenes add to the overall feel of how a day in Aslam’s house is like. Watching her get in his way while she is wiping the floor clean while he rushes to see Rakhshi was one of my favorite scenes. Some of the scenes have been repetitive and at times watching Aslam and Rakhshi’s lack of communication can be frustrating as well. Maya Ali and Shehryar Munawar are more convincing in these roles and in this drama than they were in Parey Hut Love.

These were some random thoughts about the drama in general since I have only started reviewing it this week, I wanted to discuss everything I have observed so far before I review tonight’s episode.

Tonight’s Episode

Aslam’s situation in this episode was a lot like many such youngsters who are forced into getting married to their cousins because someone like Akram deems it fit! Aslam’s choice and his feelings were not taken into consideration at all but on the contrary, the whole process was speeded up after finding out that he did not want to get married to Bushra. I couldn’t help thinking how such simple situations are made complicated because of someone’s rigidity and controlling nature. Aslam’s haan or naa makes absolutely no difference; I have always felt that this particular aspect has been covered so well. The same is the case with Rakhshi, her father does not even once sit down with her to talk about her marriage because most of the fathers do not talk to their daughters about these things!

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 6 Story Review – Happiness Is Secondary

The scene covering Aslam’s conversation with his friend was also quite interesting since it went to show how Aslam had once helped Zainab. This went to show that he was always poles apart from his brother. The clash in their personalities has always been obvious but with time it is getting even more intense since Akram feels that he is losing control. He forced Zainab into getting married to someone she did not want to marry and now he is doing the same with Aslam as well. Their mother does not have much of authority which is why she was unable to change Aslam’s decision even though she had been presented with the perfect opportunity to do so.

The way Aslam has very often attempted to get in touch with Rakhshi and the excitement with which he chases her every time he gets the opportunity to do so is a true reflection of the old school romance. Maya Ali and Shehryar Munawar have translated the desperation and longing for each other superbly on screen. The director Anjum Shehzad has also breathed life into these scenes by paying great attention to minute details. The scene covering Aslam’s concern for Zainab and the way she told him that she was alright when clearly she is really unhappy with her life was one of the best scenes tonight.

Nargis and Rakhshi’s scenes tonight were a lot like the ones we have seen earlier too. The only new information we learned was the reason why Nargis keeps on giving Rakhshi these reminders. Although she is her well-wisher she has her own ulterior motives as well which makes her character more human. Nargis’ reminders are also the main reason for the change in the way Rakhshi operates. She stopped communicating with Aslam altogether after Nargis gave her a warning last time and this time around too she will meet Aslam so that she can ask him to do something tangible. In many ways, Nargis has been central to Aslam and Rakhshi’s story. The fact that all the supporting characters influence this main track in some way or the other makes the story more interesting. They have their own stories and personalities as well but everything they have done, still do or say, in some way changes the course of Aslam and Rakhshi’s story.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 6 Story Review – Happiness Is Secondary

Final Remarks

Pehli Si Mohabbat is a simple but impactful story told with the utmost clarity so far. The writer has managed to highlight certain weaknesses in the family system and the lack of empathy in people in general aptly. Even though I watched most of these episodes for entertainment purposes only, when I sat down to write this review tonight, I realized just how much I had gathered from everything I had watched in the past 5 weeks. The director Anjum Shehzad has definitely worked hard to make sure that all the scenes are translated on-screen realistically. Most of the performances have been convincing and there are some which have stood out more than others. Apart from Aslam and Rakhshi’s very filmy first scene together, all the scenes have been realistic. Pehli Si Mohabbat has a great deal going for it and I really hope it continues to be engaging and meaningful. This drama has intelligently shown how lightly someone’s happiness is taken in our social setup and how seriously other people’s approval is considered. The romance has been electrifying and the reality checks have been equally intense.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 28 Story Review – Holding Everyone Accountable

It is unfortunate that a drama with such a solid script and some exceptional performances is losing its charm because of repetition. Pehli Si Mohabbat’s take on our society’s obsession with arranged marriages and seeking approval from others always impressed me but the slow pace and repetition have taken a toll on me. Even now, the drama has not lost its meaning but it has definitely lost its entertainment value due to unnecessary dragging. Although Rakhshi and Aslam met in this episode after months of being away from each other, this scene was shown in the end and was worth the wait because of the circumstances in which they met. They should have been given more screen time instead of showing Faiz Ullah, Nargis, and Rakhshi’s scenes. Faiz Ullah’s dialogues continue to make me cringe and Nargis continued to be the voice of reason. This was another episode showing the guilt and regrets of almost all the characters.

Apart from the repetition, the make-up and overall looks of all the characters except for Sheheryar Munawwar were so off-putting in this episode because they did not go well with the situations at all. Maya Ali has had a signature make-up look right from the start, she has been put through so much hell and has been crying throughout yet even when she was leaving for Aslam’s house she looked trim and proper just as she always does! Even Saba Faisal and Nausheen Shah had a full face of make-up while they mourned Zainab’s death. The funniest part was Sikandar’s well combed and styled hair right before he passed out! The producers truly are testing the patience of the viewers at this point. Rakhshi’s character has stayed the same in these 28 weeks, which is simply unbearable. Practically everyone has contributed to Zainab’s death in some way or the other. Therefore, the only good thing about post-Zainab episodes is that everyone has been taking responsibility for their wrong decisions and actions.

Even More Guilt

Last week Akram’s guilt and his true feelings after Zainab’s death were made quite obvious yet this episode was also dedicated to highlighting a little more of this guilt. This time around Aslam was the one who held everyone responsible. Aslam’s reaction made perfect sense; this was also the perfect example of survivor’s guilt. While Zainab died of heartbreak, Aslam is still alive and when Zainab was dying he was lying helplessly in a hospital. Zainab baji could easily be termed as his first love and his only ally therefore this reaction was expected from him. All of this guilt shown by each one of these characters is not going to bring Zainab back – this entire track definitely has a strong message for all such people out there. However, this particular aspect has been highlighted repeatedly and will only lose its appeal if yet another episode is dedicated to it.

Murad and Sikandar met for the first time tonight. I was slightly surprised by Murad’s reaction since he was much more contained than a person in his situation would be. Once again the tombstone was such a meaningful reminder of the fact that Zainab kept her promise. When Sikandar passed out I felt as if he was finally out of the picture but the preview of the next episode showed that he will survive. He is another person who knows that he added enormously to Zainab’s misery. The performances were on point like every other week but the tracks did not have anything new to offer.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 28 Story Review – Holding Everyone Accountable

Faiz Ullah’s Obsession!

Faiz Ullah’s sole purpose in life is fast turning into an obsession because he cannot move on in life until he gets Rakhshi off of his back. Rakhshi’s dialogues about her existence were more or less the same as before. However, she did muster up the courage to ask her father if she could go to Aslam’s house to say her final goodbyes to Zainab. Nargis’ dialogues reflected the viewers’ point of view when she was talking to her husband and in the first scene with Rakhshi. However later on she tried hard to make Rakhshi understand her father’s point of view as well. Maya Ali’s performance suggested that Rakhshi is like a vulnerable and scared child who is clueless. However, her rona dhona is being given excessive screen time!

Rakhshi and Aslam’s Meeting

Rakhshi and Aslam’s meeting was the most well-written and scene of this latest episode. Rakhshi was finally held accountable for her buzdili, which was much-needed! Also, it was good to see Aslam’s mother welcoming Rakhshi wholeheartedly and taking responsibility for the wrong decisions which made Zainab’s life a living hell. Maya Ali’s make-up proved to be the biggest distraction and affected this scene’s impact. Is Aslam truly over Rakhshi? This would have been the perfect time for Rakhshi to have a change of heart too but I guess that’s not happening any time soon! Rakhshi definitely has some strengths and she can take a stand when she wants to, however she is too worried about letting her father down to do much.

Final Remarks

Some of the scenes in this episode were well written and others were repetitive. Also, the director tends to stretch the scenes excessively by showing rona dhona in particular. I was hoping that this would be the second last episode of the drama but that was not the case! I will not be reviewing Pehli Si Mohabbat weekly from now on and will only be reviewing the last episode.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 27 Story Review – Guilt & Realizations

This was another episode dedicated mostly to Zainab’s exit from the story. It was not the kind of episode that gives you a lot to discuss or ponder upon except for a few of the aspects of Zainab’s life that have been part of the discussions before as well. Ironically, all those responsible for Zainab’s heartbreak were there for her when she did not need their support and love! While Zainab’s exit from the story is a really important development, there was absolutely no need to stretch these scenes so much. Faiz Ullah is testing my patience even more with every passing episode. He has to be the most unbearable and selfish character in the drama right now. His majboori dialogues are making me cringe especially because he claims to love his daughter. Two of the most important developments tonight were Aslam finding out the truth behind Zainab’s heartbreak and Arif’s proposal for Rakhshi. Maya Ali’s crying scenes are getting beyond repetitive and extremely annoying!

Guilt and Realizations

Zainab’s death left Akram feeling guilty for all the right reasons. Murad and Sikandar both are equally guilty of putting her through the worst. By the end of this episode, Sikandar realized that Zainab could not love him the way he expected her to. The tombstone signified that Zainab kept her promise because she died as Murad’s wife! Sikandar’s dialogues however did not work for me at all. Even after everything that happened, somehow he still managed to feel as if he was also the guilty party! Until last week I actually felt for him even though he was toxic and slightly crazy but after this episode, his deewanapan came across as just plain selfishness more than anything else. I felt for poor Aslam, he never expected or wanted his sister to do all that she did for him. Now that he knows how far Zainab went to ensure that he gets married to Rakhshi, he will be feeling guiltier than ever. This will only add to Aslam’s troubles even though he is troubled enough as it is. Ishrat could have easily kept Zainab’s secret because she did not ‘owe’ Murad an apology or an explanation after everything he put her through.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 27 Story Review – Guilt & Realizations

The funeral scenes were elaborate; these scenes alone would have been enough to give this character a fitting farewell. Rakhshi’s dialogues regarding Zainab were more impactful than any other. She shared with Munazza that she had witnessed Zainab’s death even before she died. This was such an apt way to remind the viewers that Zainab’s soul died when she was forced to marry Murad but no one acknowledged or mourned that death. Rakhshi was equally concerned for Aslam since she knows more than anyone else just how close he was to his sister. Maya Ali’s acting has been more or less the same in every single scene. She probably made some kind of a record of crying endlessly on-screen while shooting for Pehli Si Mohabbat!

Rakhshi’s Marriage

In Faiz Ullah’s house, Rakhshi’s marriage continued to be the main topic of discussion. Even after finding out about Zainab’s death, he somehow managed to connect that to getting Rakhshi married. For the first time, even Nargis’ dialogues were not too convincing even though she did take a stand for Rakhshi. However, she did not give Faiz Ullah the kind of reality checks he deserved at this point. He just wants Rakhshi to get married, that is the sole purpose of his life and he has thousands of explanations for this self-created majboori of his! From log kya kahenge to what if I die today, he used every excuse in the book to justify his obsession with Rakhshi’s marriage! I have started disliking his character more than any other male character in the drama. He does not deserve all the love and support he gets from his wife and daughter.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 27 Story Review – Guilt & Realizations

Final Remarks

It seems as if the producers are bent on stretching this drama therefore it isn’t even ending next week! Last week’s episode was powerful but so much more could have been covered in this episode and the drama could have easily ended next week. The next episode’s preview suggested that Aslam might refuse to marry Rakhshi and she would end up getting married to Arif, maybe. I was waiting for Rakhshi’s character to come into its own but it is already too late! I guess we will be witnessing her crying right till the end.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 26 Story Review – Emotional

Tonight’s episode focused entirely on Zainab’s tragic exit from the story and we were shown its immediate effect on everyone including Rakhshi’s wedding. It is interesting how Faiz Ullah moved near Zainab’s house and eventually the way Sikandar found out that Zainab was no more. The whole scenario had been penned down in such a way that there was nothing ‘plain’ about it. Zainab’s exit from the story was expected since she had been talking about dying quite often. This was an emotional episode that changed the story’s course and started the last chapter of the drama. The execution of the hospital scenes has been flawed since the previous episode because a patient who is in such a critical state will never be kept in a private room unmonitored! Our directors really need to put a little more thought into shooting these scenes because most often characters that are dying are shown misleadingly. Zainab was one of the most impactful characters of the drama; her exit deserved as much screen time as it got in this episode.

Zainab’s Death

Tonight’s episode opened with Murad telling Akram that Zainab was not going to survive, the writer had been setting the foundation for her exit for some time now. Murad’s reaction when he read Sikandar’s message was contrary to my expectations, I was also expecting this message to be slightly more dramatic. This entire development was executed dramatically since the dialogues were not overdramatic, the scenes were still subtle even though this was such a tragic moment. Zainab kept her promise in the end! Her final sacrifice also stopped Rakhshi’s wedding therefore ultimately she managed to keep that promise as well! She was always made to feel like a burden as if her sole purpose in life was to fulfill other people’s wishes and right till the end she did just that! Her bond with Aslam was the most endearing element of the drama, watching Aslam in such a helpless state while his sister died was heart-wrenching. Zainab lived an unhappy life due to the wrong decisions taken by those who claimed to love her. Akram had already realized that he was responsible for his sister’s condition therefore when Zainab died in this episode he wanted her to forgive him but it was too late!

Zainab’s death scene had to be the weakest one in this episode. She was dying yet she was left unattended and when Murad ran out of the room there was no one in sight! Since Murad already knew that she didn’t have too much time, her condition should have been taken more seriously! It was almost as if he accepted her fate sooner than he should have and was a little too prepared for her to die!

The scenes covering everyone’s reactions to her death however were acted out and covered exceptionally well. Surprisingly Sikandar’s reaction to the news of Zainab’s death was really impactful. Saleem Mairaj’s phenomenal performance in these scenes made them stand out. Even though Sikandar’s character has been so toxic yet I actually felt his pain tonight! Everyone acted so well in these scenes and added a more realistic feel to them, making them emotional. This was the kind of goodbye that Zainab deserved. Uzma Hassan played her role brilliantly throughout and made this character memorable.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 26 Story Review – Emotional

Rakhshi’s Wedding

Rakhshi’s wedding festivities ended with the Sikandar running away. The way Arif’s character was used to break the devastating news was actually unexpected and made the scene interesting. Arif’s sister’s conversation with Nargis yet again suggested that Rakhshi might end up playing a mother’s role in little Sadaf’s life. It would have been so nice if Sadaf and Rakhshi also had a scene together in this episode…if that is where this track is headed! Rakhshi’s expressions were more or less the same throughout this episode. By the end of the episode, Faiz Ullah was more than willing to get his daughter married to Aslam. No one except Sikandar knows that Zainab is the one who has died.

Final Remarks

Tonight’s episode was emotional and engaging. The performances and the screenplay were on point! Will Aslam blame Rakhshi for his sister’s death? It is definitely time to wrap up the story; two more episodes should be enough to show an ending to Rakhshi and Aslam’s track.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 25 Story Review – Interesting!

Honestly speaking when I started watching this recent episode I found myself questioning some of the scenes but by the end of this episode, I felt that these scenes might be there for a reason after all! Tonight’s episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat turned the story around completely. The shift in Aslam’s character, the ‘possible’ change in Akram’s feelings for Rakhshi and Zainab’s present medical condition; all of these situations were equally moving but this episode definitely belonged to Akram. Every time I think that a particular episode of this drama might turn out to be a filler episode, it gives hints that suggest that certain tracks will go in a different direction altogether.

I could be totally wrong but after watching this episode I felt as if Arif’s character is there for a reason and eventually Rakhshi might end up being Sadaf’s stepmother. Having said that, I really want to know how Aslam’s track will end if that happens. Anything is possible at this point, I was also left wondering if Zainab will be able to keep her promise to Murad now that she is dying. Uzma Hassan is the only actor in the drama who, it seems, put her foot down so that she could carry the right make-up look for every situation. Many of the other actors including Saba Faisal seem to be wearing a little too much make-up. Maya Ali’s make-up has been the same throughout; there was no difference between her bridal look and her usual look when she was going through hell! The scenes in the hospital were not executed too well since anyone in Zainab’s condition wouldn’t be in a room but the ICU!

Even More Helplessness

With this episode, Akram and Zainab’s helplessness definitely outweighed everything else. The change in Akram’s character has been gradual and convincing. He has watched his brother suffer for the longest time now and being the older overprotective brother, he has finally realized that he has made some really wrong decisions in the past. Akram’s character has come into its own with this episode. Hassan Sheheryar Yasin has completely owned his character throughout; I am looking forward to seeing more of him in upcoming projects.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 25 Story Review – Interesting!

Watching him beg Faiz Ullah was heartwarming and touching. Faiz Ullah is turning out to be the most rigid character and I had a really difficult time understanding his mindset. His lecture about beti ka naseeb did not work for me at all. He is going ahead with this marriage because he is too scared of facing the repercussions. Faiz Ullah had the strength to fight for himself when he chose to marry Nargis but he doesn’t have the courage to take a stand for his daughter. Nargis continues to give Rakhshi reality checks and at the same time gives her the ‘support’ she needs to go ahead with this sacrifice! At this point, I see her as an enabler at times!

Zainab’s helplessness resonated with me, like always. Akram also talked about how his decision had ruined his sister’s life. He admitted that the forced marriage and the fact that her husband knew everything about her past turned out to be a living nightmare for Zainab. Akram admitted every single thing he had done wrong and genuinely wanted that Faiz Ullah should not repeat his mistakes. Sikandar is turning out to be a more twisted character than I had imagined! His fixation with Zainab is such that he could not even tell that she was in distress when he called her. Watching Zainab all by herself in such a condition was not believable at all! Uzma Hassan’s outstanding performance however has left me in awe of her talent; she makes every character she plays unforgettable.

Arif’s track was covered in two scenes tonight and both these scenes focused on his status as a single parent. He comes across as a dedicated father who puts his daughter’s needs before everything else – a lot like Faiz Ullah who raised Rakhshi all by himself! Will Rakhshi choose to play the role Nargis played in her life but at a time when a girl really does need her mother the most? No one can understand Sadaf’s pain and needs more than Rakhshi, could she be the one who will make a difference in this girl’s life? So far Rakhshi’s character has been the least impactful one in this play, hopefully in the end it will give us something to talk about.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 25 Story Review – Interesting!

Final Remarks

Tonight’s episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat might have laid the foundations for the most important development yet. I am really excited about the upcoming episode. Murad will read Sikandar’s messages in the upcoming episode and Zainab might not live to see how Aslam’s love story ends! Her track has been a perfect example of how forced marriages especially in such situations can play havoc with people’s lives. I find myself completely invested in the story at this point and I feel that there’s so much to look forward to. I just hope that the viewers don’t have to wait for too long because there’s no room for stretching the story further.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 24 Story Review – Major Compromises

Tonight’s episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat carried forward the main idea which has been the focus of attention right from the beginning. Some of the scenarios and dialogues were repetitive but Pehli Si Mohabbat continues to be a drama that keeps on giving its viewers something to look forward to. The writer continues to use every single development in the story to take different tracks forward in a direction that is well thought out but difficult to predict. Every episode lays the foundation for an important development which is shown in the coming week. Faiza Iftikhar is one of those few writers who make sure that every single character adds something to the story and the character development is always convincing. Akram and Zainab’s character development has my undivided attention at the moment.

Nargis and Rakhshi

This latest episode opened with Rakhshi overhearing the conversation between Nargis and Farooq while she was leaving the house. Nargis’ dialogues explained her state of mind and reasoning in detail therefore this scene gave the clarity the viewers were looking for. However, the scene could easily have been chopped down. It was a little too long especially considering the fact that Aslam was waiting for Rakhshi and she was standing there listening to this conversation. This was an important scene nevertheless since had Rakhshi not heard all this, she would have gone ahead with the plan.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 24 Story Review – Major Compromises

Nargis has been telling Farooq to leave ever since he came back therefore I really hope that this would be the last time she asks him to do that! Faiz Ullah’s interactions with Nargis in the previous episode hinted that his faith in her would put the added pressure on her. Nargis turned out to be yet another character who chose commitment and sacrifice over love. Even though she has been breaking stereotypes right from the beginning but this time around she was the one who forced Rakhshi to choose her father’s ‘maan’. The fact that she tried really hard to convince Faiz Ullah beforehand makes this whole situation slightly more bearable than it would have been otherwise.

Rakhshi finally decided to use the phone Zainab gave her, to stay in touch with Aslam, only to tell that she could not come! I felt for Aslam and found it really difficult to appreciate where Nargis was coming from. Although, this entire situation was close to reality and in line with the main plot and theme of the drama, this turned out to be the most unpleasant development from this episode.

Zainab and Murad

Zainab’s scenes right from the beginning of this episode suggested different things. Some of these scenes suggested that she was sure she would not survive while others suggested that she felt there was hope for Aslam and Rakhshi. She felt this was the time to start afresh since Sikandar was finally out of her life. Her dying for Murad dialogue has been repeated twice therefore I feel that she is not going to be around for too long. Zainab acknowledged the fact that she cheated on her husband emotionally for all these years, in one of the previous episodes, and her last conversation with Murad in this episode was an extension of that. Unfortunately, due to her confidence in Rakhshi, she gave Sikandar too many clues and he figured out that there was more to the situation than Zainab was revealing. Zainab will probably hold herself responsible for what happened to Aslam more than ever now. Uzma Hassan and Paras Masroor’s performances were outstanding throughout, just like always! They manage to pull off the most challenging scenes effortlessly.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 24 Story Review – Major Compromises

Final Remarks

While watching this episode I continuously wondered if these men deserved such committed and loving women! Faiz Ullah and Murad both are equally selfish in their own way. While Sikandar definitely does not deserve better, my heart goes out for Aslam. Aslam bechara ended up getting yet another beating, I hope he gets to be happy in the end. Tonight’s episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat reminded me of one of Nargis’ dialogues in which she was shown thinking just how lucky Faiz Ullah was because so many people were willing to give up their happiness for him.

The preview of the next episode suggested that the wedding will not take place even next week! Akram will finally show much-needed flexibility but will Faiz Ullah change his decision? Pehli Si Mohabbat definitely has tons of potential but the story needs to pick up pace so that we get to see how these main tracks wrap up ultimately. It is one of those few dramas which still hold my interest even with the slow pace since every episode has some substantial development to its credit and the story stays on track.
