Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 24 Story Review – Major Compromises

Tonight’s episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat carried forward the main idea which has been the focus of attention right from the beginning. Some of the scenarios and dialogues were repetitive but Pehli Si Mohabbat continues to be a drama that keeps on giving its viewers something to look forward to. The writer continues to use every single development in the story to take different tracks forward in a direction that is well thought out but difficult to predict. Every episode lays the foundation for an important development which is shown in the coming week. Faiza Iftikhar is one of those few writers who make sure that every single character adds something to the story and the character development is always convincing. Akram and Zainab’s character development has my undivided attention at the moment.

Nargis and Rakhshi

This latest episode opened with Rakhshi overhearing the conversation between Nargis and Farooq while she was leaving the house. Nargis’ dialogues explained her state of mind and reasoning in detail therefore this scene gave the clarity the viewers were looking for. However, the scene could easily have been chopped down. It was a little too long especially considering the fact that Aslam was waiting for Rakhshi and she was standing there listening to this conversation. This was an important scene nevertheless since had Rakhshi not heard all this, she would have gone ahead with the plan.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 24 Story Review – Major Compromises

Nargis has been telling Farooq to leave ever since he came back therefore I really hope that this would be the last time she asks him to do that! Faiz Ullah’s interactions with Nargis in the previous episode hinted that his faith in her would put the added pressure on her. Nargis turned out to be yet another character who chose commitment and sacrifice over love. Even though she has been breaking stereotypes right from the beginning but this time around she was the one who forced Rakhshi to choose her father’s ‘maan’. The fact that she tried really hard to convince Faiz Ullah beforehand makes this whole situation slightly more bearable than it would have been otherwise.

Rakhshi finally decided to use the phone Zainab gave her, to stay in touch with Aslam, only to tell that she could not come! I felt for Aslam and found it really difficult to appreciate where Nargis was coming from. Although, this entire situation was close to reality and in line with the main plot and theme of the drama, this turned out to be the most unpleasant development from this episode.

Zainab and Murad

Zainab’s scenes right from the beginning of this episode suggested different things. Some of these scenes suggested that she was sure she would not survive while others suggested that she felt there was hope for Aslam and Rakhshi. She felt this was the time to start afresh since Sikandar was finally out of her life. Her dying for Murad dialogue has been repeated twice therefore I feel that she is not going to be around for too long. Zainab acknowledged the fact that she cheated on her husband emotionally for all these years, in one of the previous episodes, and her last conversation with Murad in this episode was an extension of that. Unfortunately, due to her confidence in Rakhshi, she gave Sikandar too many clues and he figured out that there was more to the situation than Zainab was revealing. Zainab will probably hold herself responsible for what happened to Aslam more than ever now. Uzma Hassan and Paras Masroor’s performances were outstanding throughout, just like always! They manage to pull off the most challenging scenes effortlessly.

Final Remarks

While watching this episode I continuously wondered if these men deserved such committed and loving women! Faiz Ullah and Murad both are equally selfish in their own way. While Sikandar definitely does not deserve better, my heart goes out for Aslam. Aslam bechara ended up getting yet another beating, I hope he gets to be happy in the end. Tonight’s episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat reminded me of one of Nargis’ dialogues in which she was shown thinking just how lucky Faiz Ullah was because so many people were willing to give up their happiness for him.

The preview of the next episode suggested that the wedding will not take place even next week! Akram will finally show much-needed flexibility but will Faiz Ullah change his decision? Pehli Si Mohabbat definitely has tons of potential but the story needs to pick up pace so that we get to see how these main tracks wrap up ultimately. It is one of those few dramas which still hold my interest even with the slow pace since every episode has some substantial development to its credit and the story stays on track.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 23 Story Review – Difficult Decisions

Tonight’s episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat yet again focused on the internal turmoil of all the leading characters and the weight of expectations! The drama continues to be on track, the execution is also on point but as a viewer, it can be frustrating watching such slow development in the story. The writer however has made sure that every single scene is either meaningful or adds to the anticipation of the viewers. All the actors deserve due credit for their natural performances. The biggest strength of Pehli Si Mohabbat continues to be the way the story literally flows. Every scene looks and feels real. When Rakhshi finally decided to leave, I was literally at the edge of my seat. However, the promo of the next episode gave away so much!! We know exactly what is going to happen in the upcoming episode with the exception of a few details which were obviously missing from the promo! The story really should move forward now since Rakhshi and Aslam have been suffering long enough.

The Emotional Turmoil

Pehli Si Mohabbat has throughout been more about the emotional turmoil of different characters than anything else. I absolutely love how honestly the writer has penned down the feelings of these characters and hasn’t sugar-coated anything. Whether it is Zainab or Nargis (two women who come from really different backgrounds), their feelings have been shown with the utmost honesty even though the general viewer might not want to watch women who are still in love with their exes! Rakhshi’s constant sobbing is definitely getting annoying but I like how it has been shown that she feels pressurized by the expectations his father has from her. There is definitely more showing than telling which makes Pehli Si Mohabbat engaging even with the slow pace.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 23 Story Review – Difficult Decisions

This recent episode opened with Zainab reading Sikandar’s message. Zainab continues to be the most important character in the drama. She managed to live through the most difficult phase of her life but she does not have the emotional or physical strength to bear another trauma. Zainab holds Aslam really dear and over the years she has learned to take action when it is needed the most. Nargis confessed her love for Farooq and just when she did that Faiz Ullah reminded her of how much she meant to him. Nargis made the decision to marry Faiz Ullah in haste but now she is constantly trying to stay committed to him even though she is inclined towards Farooq. Faiz Ullah’s interactions with her added further pressure, if she leaves him he will be heartbroken! I am waiting to hear more from Nargis since I find her dialogues so interesting. There are barely any emotions involved yet you feel exactly what she has been through all these years and everything she has learned along the way.

Right till the end it was difficult to tell whether Rakhshi will be able to muster up the courage to leave her home or not. Nadeem’s conversation with Aslam added to the doubt! When she finally decided to leave it came as a surprise but the preview of the next episode definitely ruined the element of surprise. Aslam’s concern for his friend and his faith in Rakhshi showed the mature side of a character which also has a playful side to it. I am already dreading watching him being beaten yet again! This is turning into a Zohra and Moosa situation, where the hero is trying harder than the heroine. Even though the pressures on Rakhshi are real but her inability to make a final decision has put Aslam through even more turmoil. Also, why didn’t Rakhshi use the mobile handed over to her by Zainab? Some kind of communication between Aslam and Rakhshi would have been good.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 23 Story Review – Difficult Decisions

Zainab and Murad’s scene yet again showed how desperately Murad wanted Zainab to have some actual feelings for him. Zainab was only trying to make him stay because she did not want him to witness the wedding and he was confused for all the right reasons! Zainab has gone from having absolutely no conversation with Murad to convincing him to do certain things according to her wishes. Interestingly enough, she is doing it for her brother and perhaps also because she knows she might not live for too long. Many of her dialogues suggest just that. Although Ishrat’s character gets little screen time, she always has a screen presence.

Final Remarks

I hope that we get to see a major shift in the story soon. All the actors deserve tons of appreciation for doing complete justice to their respective characters and breathing life into every single scene. I am already feeling for Aslam and want his trials to end! Apart from the complete lack of communication between Aslam and Rakhshi, everything else makes perfect sense.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 22 Story Review – Zainab In Action

This latest episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat showed how Zainab did everything in her power to ensure that history does not repeat itself. Just like every other episode of this drama the clarity with which everything was shown made it an interesting watch. The excessive rona dhona however could easily have been avoided. Some of the reactions were unexpected and the way Zainab took over was even more so! Even though like everyone else I wanted to see some ‘action’ in this episode, it is quite clear that the writer is in no rush. I find Pehli Si Mohabbat logical and meaningful even though the pace has slowed down considerably. The characters have been etched out so well that I always find it easy to connect to everyone’s journey. The story is right on track even after all these weeks and there is so much more which can happen in the upcoming weeks. Some of the scenes also gave the viewers a reason to wonder whether Aslam and Rakhshi actually will go ahead with Zainab’s plan or not. The fact that none of the characters are black and white continues to be Pehli Si Mohabbat’s biggest strength. I hardly find myself ‘judging’ the characters perhaps because their intentions and journeys have been shown with so much clarity.

Zainab’s Plan

After finding out what Sikandar’s actual intentions were Zainab came up with a plan which she believes is good for everyone in the long run. Even when Zainab was suffering in silence her character had a definite appeal. She never shared much with Murad but whenever she had a conversation with her mother, her intelligence and insight showed. Therefore, it does not come as a surprise that this time around she did not just sit back and watch things unfold the way Sikandar has planned. Also, the reasons she gave Rakhshi were solid. She feels that if Sikandar keeps on pressurizing her using her love for Aslam, she might eventually give in. She also does not want Rakhshi to go through something far worse than what she has been through after she got married to Murad. Had Zainab’s love for Aslam been the only reason why she went ahead with this plan, it probably wouldn’t have been so convincing. The fact that there is so much more she is worried about makes this change in her behavior more convincing. She got the closure she needed and now she is at a point in her life where she has nothing to lose. She is also free now – guilt-free! She always blamed herself for letting Sikandar down, for putting him through so much, and had been punishing herself for all these years.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 22 Story Review – Zainab In Action

Zainab convinced both Rakhshi and Aslam in this episode. Surprisingly, both of them were reluctant to go ahead with the plan. The pressure to hold the family honor was one of the biggest reasons why they were more fearful than excited! Rakhshi’s father’s scene did not work for me at all; I don’t understand his logic and I find it really difficult to believe that he actually is looking out for his daughter. Rakhshi feels guilty already and like Aslam said she might not have the guts to go ahead with the plan. Even after she got the phone, Aslam and Rakhshi did not. The writer is obviously making us wait on purpose! When will they meet next and under which circumstances?

Nargis went to meet Saleem and their conversation yet again was more or less the same. This time around the viewers understood more than ever why Nargis got married to Faiz Ullah. She is yet another character who is in a loveless marriage but this was a choice she made herself! Saleem is just as adamant as Sikandar, the only difference is that so far he hasn’t used the kind of tactics which Sikandar is using! Nargis is clearly confused now, she does not love Faiz Ullah but she also does not want to end her marriage with him. I am definitely more interested than ever to find out what she decides ultimately. Rabia Butt has done exceptionally well in this drama especially when it comes to translating Nargis’ confusion on screen.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 22 Story Review – Zainab In Action

Final Remarks

Tonight’s episode focused entirely on the big plan to run away, everyone’s reactions were covered in detail. Zainab is turning out to be an amazing character and her journey is the main attraction for the longest time. I wish the actors were not made to cry so much! Some of the scenes could have been equally powerful without the tears. This was another well-written episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat. Most of the actors continue to impress. The stage is set and we will probably know the outcome in the next two weeks! Can’t wait to find out what turns all these tracks take.

Did you watch tonight’s episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat? Do share your thoughts about it.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 21 Story Review – Closure

All the tracks continue to move forward at a steady pace. Even though the pace of the drama slows down at times but it is always meaningful in some way or the other. Every episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat shows some movement in the story. I was expecting this particular episode to be slightly more happening but yet again the focus was more on making the viewers anticipate what turn different tracks will take next. Even though Aslam and Rakhshi have been suffering for the longest time, I can’t help but feel for them every single time I watch them struggle. It would have been great if Zainab and Rakhshi met in this episode. It is going to be really difficult waiting another week to find out whether Rakhshi and Aslam manage to go through with the plan or not. Zainab’s scenes have been the highlight of every episode but tonight the conversation she had with her husband was slightly misleading. But then that has been the beauty of this character; Zainab is human, most importantly someone who has been through so much that she must have a reason to question why someone would even stick around for so long! Murad’s ‘concern’ for her has however been the bare minimum, especially when compared to his toxic behavior!

Confessions & Moment of Truth

Pehli Si Mohabbat’s strongest element has always been its characters. While the story might be one that we have watched many times before, the characters, their relationship with each other, and their settings set this drama apart. Tonight, Zainab’s confession on cheating on her husband emotionally all through their married life was definitely a first in a Pakistani drama. This was not done in order to ask for forgiveness but it was a genuine confession on her part. Sikandar’s reaction and everything he has done so far has proved to Zainab that he did not deserve to be loved the way she has loved him all these years. This has definitely proven to be a closure for her and perhaps that is why she is giving Murad more leverage than he deserves! The entire idea of this track has been that you cannot force yourself to love someone but Zainab clearly always made a conscious effort to keep a distance from Murad. Although his frustrations have always been understandable, he has never once taken the high road. If Zainab had been emotionally absent throughout, her husband also made sure that he put her through hell for doing so even though he had the option of leaving her! Uzma Hassan has been remarkable as Zainab, her expressions have been outstanding throughout; so subtle yet so meaningful.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 21 Story Review – Closure

The realization that Sikandar does not value Zainab enough to let Rakhshi go just so that her brother can be at peace has proved to be a moment of truth for her. She has made a decision based on Rakhshi’s well-being more than anything else. She does not want Rakhshi to be with a man like Sikandar and live the kind of life she has lived for so many years. Zainab has a sensitive side, yet she can also completely switch herself off when she is around Murad. For once, Sikandar was truly affected by the rejection and the realization that Zainab did not love him anymore. His reply to his parents suggested that he might back off from the wedding.

The Helplessness

The main leads of the drama yet again were shown in situations that highlighted their helplessness. Sheheryar Munawar has done exceptionally well translating Aslam’s inability to take control of the situation and resulting frustrations on screen. Aslam and Akram’s scene in this episode as well showed a caring and softer side of Akram. He is more worried than ever for his brother and is trying to make things easier for him. My opinion about Akram has changed in the past few weeks. While he can be quite aggressive and controlling at times, he does love his brother in his own way. Rakhshi on the other hand is for now silently going ahead with the wedding festivities even though she is dead inside. The scene in which that little girl noticed how sad this bride was, said a great deal about Rakhshi’s state of mind and how her own father couldn’t see this!

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 21 Story Review – Closure

Final Remarks

Pehli Si Mohabbat definitely needs to pick up pace but even with the present pace the emotional element of the drama never dies down. The relationship some of these characters have with each other always proves to be the best part of every episode. The solid performances definitely add to the appeal of the show. Some of the scenes are repetitive such as the ones covering Murad and Zainab’s relationship. Overall, however, this latest episode wasn’t just a filler episode since there was substantial development in some of the tracks. I just hope that we get to see more progress in the upcoming episode since waiting an entire week and not getting to watch something dramatic when it is highly anticipated can really test your patience! It is really difficult to predict what will happen next which makes the story more interesting.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 20 Story Review – Bitterness & Helplessness

This latest episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat laid the foundations for perhaps some of the most important developments in the upcoming episodes. Yet again, the writer made sure that the stage was set for something which I am guessing will be drastic. This episode wasn’t as impactful as the previous one but it was definitely one that added something new to every track. Aslam and Rakhshi’s helplessness never ceases to move me; they are constantly going through a different hell whenever they think they have already been through the worst. I find myself completely involved in all the tracks and the emotional element of every episode supersedes all the other aspects.

I missed watching Zainab and Aslam together in the same frame tonight. She did go to talk to him but for some odd reason, the viewers were not shown what they talked about. All the scenes in this episode were meaningful and they hinted towards certain things which might change everyone’s lives forever. Sikandar’s bitterness is too deep-rooted therefore nothing that Zainab says can change his decision. When Zainab said that she expected him to comply immediately, she voiced the opinions of most of the viewers. Aslam and Akram’s emotional moment was the highlight of this episode; those few seconds of bonding were so special. Sheheryar Munawar’s brilliant performance throughout has made this character truly come alive on screen. HSY is equally convincing in the role and even though Saleem Mairaj looks too old to play this role, he is definitely giving a solid performance.

Failing To Let Go

Sikandar’s inability to let go of whatever happened in the past and failure to move on is impacting not just Aslam and Rakhshi but also Zainab’s life. Taking Rakhshi to Akram’s shop was a way to pressure Zainab even more. He holds Zainab responsible just as much as he does everyone else and he probably is bitterer than ever because Zainab refused to share her actual situation with him. His sole interest in getting married to Rakhshi is to make Zainab’s brother’s life a living hell. Aslam and Rakhshi’s meeting this time around was such that you couldn’t help but feel for them more than ever. Aslam had been dying to meet Rakhshi and now that he finally did get to see her it was in the most disastrous of circumstances. For once Akram understood his pain and also knew why Sikandar decided to bring Rakhshi there. It was actually good to see Rakhshi protesting a little, she also refused to sit in the front seat with Sikandar, which was a minute detail that showed that Rakhshi was not going to hide how she actually felt about Sikandar.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 20 Story Review – Bitterness & Helplessness

Murad and Sikandar do have a few things in common. While Murad claims to ‘love’ Zainab, he is also constantly reminding her of her past and expects her to love him even though he has never loved her unconditionally himself. He has always judged her and reminded her of the past which has made Zainab bitter but she chooses to be patient. Her compliance annoys him because he is constantly looking for a reaction. Since Zainab really is someone who shows absolutely no emotion in front of him, his state of mind and his dialogue tonight made perfect sense. While you understand why he is constantly frustrated and feels insecure, you also feel that he hasn’t really given Zainab the kind of love she needed in order to heal and love him back. He has done the bare minimum and Zainab is doing just that too! Their loveless marriage will probably end with a tragedy. Unfortunately, both the men in Zainab’s life proved to be equally selfish.

Zainab has been taking a lot of risks and it seems as if Murad has started suspecting her as well. Her bhabhi’s dialogue in this episode also suggested that Murad might find out what she is up to at some point. The viewers found out today that Sikandar got Faiz Ullah a house right next to Zainab’s house yet no one knows that just yet. Zainab however knows where Rakhshi is now and the preview of the next episode showed that she will go and meet her with a proposal that Rakhshi may or may not agree to. Most of Rakhshi’s defiance in this episode was directed towards Nargis, she did not talk to her father directly. Nargis also knows that it is too late to cancel the wedding therefore she keeps on telling Rakhshi to go ahead with whatever her father has planned for her. Rakhshi’s sole concern continues to be Aslam’s well being and she is getting more frustrated as the wedding gets closer.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 20 Story Review – Bitterness & Helplessness

Final Remarks

This was another emotional episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat with some really impressive performances. I also love the way the director has used the OST to add to the intensity of the scenes. The next episode promises to be even more powerful. Will Rakhshi agree to run away with Aslam? There was definitely some change in her overall stance in this episode, if she takes such a decision it will make perfect sense. Right now, the story is both unpredictable and extremely enticing. I can’t wait to watch what happens next.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 19 Story Review – Must-Watch

This was another emotional, meaningful and well-executed episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat. Every character’s journey has been penned down in such a way that you can’t help but relate to each one of them. There is a perfect justification given by the writer for all the present actions of these characters unlike so many dramas right now with characters who are evil for no reason. Even though Sikandar, Murad and even Faiz Ullah are not likable characters, there are concrete reasons why they have changed over the years. Every episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat highlights something which we have seen in dramas repeatedly but it does so in such a way that it actually leaves an impact!

The log kya kahenge scenario has been shown innumerable times in dramas but the takeaway has never been as powerful as it is in this drama. Also, the fact that the parents do not realize the importance of consent in marriage hits really hard while watching this drama. The clarity with which this script has been written truly makes this drama stand out. The writer has put her heart and soul into penning down every track and the actors deserve tons of credit for making these journeys come alive on screen. The director Anjum Shehzad has made sure that all of these emotions come across as genuine on-screen even when some of the scenes are overdramatic, they always leave an impact. Usually, at this point, the stories start wrapping up and most of us are looking forward to an ending but that is not the case here, Pehli Si Mohabbat is growing stronger than ever now since every episode is intense and engaging.

The Inner Struggles and Other Challenges

Most of the leading characters in this drama have continuously been fighting inner battles while trying their best to keep their relationships intact with people who have added to these struggles! While Bushra has decided to ‘console’ herself by changing the definition of love, Aslam cannot do so just yet! It is amazing how this girl managed to make her presence felt in such a short period of time. Unlike other ‘annoying extras’ in Pakistani dramas, I find myself feeling for her just as much as I do for Aslam and Rakhshi. While she finds it really hard to live with the decision she had to make, she always manages to put up a smiling face for the one she loves. Aslam’s helplessness has always been just as powerful as all the other characters. He wants to cry, to scream but he has to go on with life! He has to pretend just like Bushra, Zainab, and Rakhshi that everything is okay. We always see different sides of these characters; one side is how they actually feel and the other one is what they must show to the world.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 19 Story Review – Must-Watch

Zainab’s conversations with Murad are always meaningful in some way or the other. She has been smiling for a change and they actually have normal conversations, unlike before. Murad is afraid of losing her and wants her to ‘live’. When she asked him what he wanted from her, I expected him to say that he wanted to see her happy but happiness has never been a priority for any of these characters who have control over others. One does wonder if Zainab will be better off without the burden of this life she has been living but Murad wants her there with him. He also seems to be making some effort because he is scared and cannot understand what is wrong with her.

Rakhshi found out about Nargis’ secret in this episode and it was good to see Nargis sharing the details with her instead of hiding things from her. Nargis’ explanation showed that she was still in love with Farooq. She continues talking to him for that reason even though every single conversation revolves around the same topic. She keeps on telling him that she is married and he keeps on insisting to meet her. The flashback scene showing Rakhshi’s childhood was another meaningful addition to this episode. It showed how she struggled and how much things had changed over the years. The father who protected her and cared for her was now being so insensitive. Rakhshi’s conversation with Nargis about how she felt about this change in his behavior and how she wished her mother was there was so beautifully written and acted out. This was my favorite scene from tonight’s episode. At the same time, the writer also made sure that the viewers heard Faiz Ullah’s perspective. Like most people under societal pressure, he has lost his way and his priorities have changed over the years. He ‘expected’ his daughter to be ‘obedient’ because he had put in so much hard work and love into raising her – an expectation which is quite common in our society!

When the children are growing up most parents give them all the love but once they are adults they are expected to ‘pay back’! This was such an important takeaway in this episode – parents should continue loving and understanding their children even when they are past a certain age! Expecting the children to sacrifice their happiness in order to prove their love to their parents is such an unfair expectation. Although, this issue has been the focus of attention in so many episodes yet every time it is equally impactful.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 19 Story Review – Must-Watch

Take a Bow

With every passing episode, I am falling in love with Pehli Si Mohabbat even more! Just when you think you have seen the best of all the characters, you get to see something which makes you relate to these characters on another level. Rakhshi’s flashback scene was one such scene in this episode. The script, performances, and direction get better with every episode. Kudos to the entire team for putting together a meaningful and entertaining drama. Those viewers who gave up on this drama earlier must tune into it now since it is turning out to be one of the best Pakistani dramas we have seen in recent times. Special thanks to all the actors for such phenomenal performances in this recent episode. Faiza Iftikhar deserves tons of credit and appreciation for the clarity and intelligence with which she has penned down this script, truly impressive!

Did you watch this phenomenally beautiful episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat? Do share your thoughts about it.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 18 Story Review – Best One

Tonight’s episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat was one of the best we have seen so far. Faiza Iftikhar is perhaps the only writer whose dramas get more interesting and meaningful as the story moves forward. She takes her time establishing the characters and their stories instead of banking on the fast-paced first few episodes in order to grab the attention of the viewers. The way the supporting characters have played such an integral role in the story and have such a strong presence that they cannot be ignored is also highly appreciated. A character such as the one Nausheen Shah is playing and that of Bushra are rarely seen in dramas. Characters such as Bushra’s are usually annoying but that is definitely not the case here. She is not an insignificant addition to the drama. Bushra’s scenes tonight were heart-warming. Zainab’s track continues to be meaningful and beautifully written. Her love for Aslam and her wisdom have to be the strongest elements of her personality. She might be helpless and unhappy but she is not naïve; she picks up on vibes and does not hold back. Zainab and Sikandar’s meeting was penned down and executed powerfully. I ‘felt’ this episode; every single scene from Sikandar’s bitterness to Bushra’s unconditional love for Aslam! This was the only episode in which Zainab and Murad actually had a normal conversation!

The Depth and Meaning

This latest episode was so beautifully written that it is impossible to decide which scene had more depth and meaning. Rakhshi’s last visit to the rooftop from where it all started and her decision to leave the ‘souvenir’ behind showed her helplessness but also her reluctance to let go completely. Even though Rakhshi has not done anything to help herself but I find myself understanding her situation as opposed to blaming her for whatever happened. Through this character and that of Zainab’s the writer has effectively told the story of all those women who get married and have children but never experience true happiness. While Zainab’s present situation shows just that, Rakhshi’s situation shows how women end up leaving a partner who could have given them a perfect life for a complete stranger!

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 18 Story Review – Best One

Sikandar and Zainab’s meeting it seems was the closure she needed. After meeting him she realized that he wasn’t the person she fell in love with. She refused to show him her vulnerabilities and was there only to plead Aslam’s case. Instead of doing exactly what he was asked to, he wanted to ‘bargain’! Later on, when Zainab asked Murad a question she has not asked him for all these years, it seemed as if she was willing to move on but then when Murad started opening up in front of her, she decided to crawl back into her shell. Murad loves Zainab but his love is also selfish like that of Sikandar. Since Zainab is an intelligent woman with a lot of self-respect, she distances herself from all those people who do not respect her. Murad might claim to love her but he never tried to understand her, he expected her to love him back knowing fully well that she loved someone else. Just like her own family, he had expectations from her that were not real! I have a feeling that Zainab’s track will have a tragic ending. Uzma Hassan’s performance has been phenomenal throughout; she has breathed life into each scene and has ensured that every single emotion comes alive on screen. Despite everything she has been through, Zainab is not bitter and that is her biggest strength. She also lost in love but she refused to be like Murad and Sikandar which makes her a bigger person.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 18 Story Review – Best One

Aslam’s escape plan failed miserably but something great came out of it; Bushra decided to help him out and their scenes together were acted out so well! Aslam is completely oblivious of Bushra’s feelings, while she is at a stage now where she is willing to do whatever it takes to bring some peace to Aslam. It is ironic how Aslam does not care about what all of this must be doing to Bushra but everything that is being shown makes perfect sense! Nargis’ reality checks were savage, as always. She is such a self-assured and intelligent woman; it is refreshing watching these characters since we don’t get to watch intelligent women on screen very often! Faiz Ullah is turning out to be a rather typical and quite an unlikable character. The reality checks fall on deaf ears since he is too focused on what he feels is the right thing to do! Even the short scene covering Rakhshi and Nargis’ first meeting with the ‘little visitor’ was heart-warming.

Final Remarks

Tonight’s episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat was written so well and executed flawlessly. It was engaging right from the get-go and full of meaningful conversations. There wasn’t a single scene that was out of place or unnecessary. The convincing and natural performances definitely added to the appeal of this episode. The characterizations are so on point; such well-rounded and human-like characters! There are some characters that never cease to amaze and others that keep you wondering. I want to hate Murad but there are times when I feel for him! Most of these characters are victims in some way or the other, the only thing which sets them apart is how they reacted to the victimization.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 17 Story Review – Complications

This latest episode shifted the direction of the story towards Zainab which was expected since Sikandar came into the picture. I have always felt that this drama is perhaps more about Zainab than it was ever about Rakhshi and Aslam. Therefore, the fact that her track has taken such a turn makes me look forward to where it is headed. Shehryar Munawar continues to be exceptionally impressive as Aslam since he makes sure that the viewers relate to his pain and helplessness. Rakhshi did not get a lot of screen time in this episode and for the past few weeks, her scenes have been more or less the same. Although Saleem Miraj is a phenomenal actor, there are times when he does not look young enough to play the role he is playing. Uzma Hassan on the other hand fits perfectly into her character; she makes you relate to Zainab’s character and at the same time makes you wonder what her next move will be. It was good to see Zainab smiling after a long time and it seemed as if she was ready to move on but she is still looking for closure. Even after everything she found out tonight, it seems as if she is not over her pehli mohabbat just yet. It is refreshing to watch a drama in which women are shown supporting each other in some way or the other.

Zainab Gets In Touch With Sikandar

Tonight’s episode opened with Aslam revealing the truth to Zainab and her reaction at that point was quite unexpected. However, when she heard that Sikandar was the one who beat Aslam up, she made up her mind there and then. I was expecting more rage from her since she holds Aslam so dear but on the contrary, even when she called Sikandar, she could not muster up the courage to talk to him. Zainab was however more expressive today than she has ever been. For the first time, she made an effort to have things her way and did not let Murad question and taunt her, the way she usually lets him. There was definitely some change in her character. Even though Zainab is usually shown putting up with her husband’s toxic attitude or crying, there is an underlying strength in her character. I am waiting for this character to come into its own.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 17 Story Review – Complications

Zainab and Sikandar will finally be meeting in the upcoming episode and I am really looking forward to this union. Aslam and Zainab’s scenes have been written down and acted out so brilliantly. These two understand each other like no other and are always there to comfort each other. Nowadays when most dramas promote sibling rivalry or do not highlight the importance of such strong family bonds, it is good to see such a relationship between siblings in a drama. Even though most often all that they can do is listen to each other’s problems, their scenes together are always the highlight of every episode.

Aslam and Rakhshi’s helplessness

Aslam and Rakhshi’s helplessness has been depicted convincingly on screen. Aslam has been trying hard to get in touch with Rakhshi but everyone around him is making sure that he does not manage to do so. Although the scenes covering Aslam’s frustrations are ones we have seen in drama quite often the way they have been presented on screen makes them more relatable as well as heart-warming. Nargis’ dialogues and scenes tonight were on point as usual. She wants Rakhshi to accept reality since she knows that nothing she does is going to change her father’s plans. She does keep on reminding Faiz Ullah just how heartless he is but he couldn’t care less! Rakhshi still has faith in Aslam and does not blame him for anything.
Sikandar is using his money to ensure that everything goes the way he has planned it. He is doing everything in his power to cause as much pain and damage as he possibly can.

Aslam was more desperate than ever tonight when he heard that Rakhshi was going to move out of that house. The preview of the next episode suggested that he will probably try to run away with the money his mamu gave him but he will get caught!

Final Remarks

Tonight’s episode laid the foundations for the important developments we will get to watch in the upcoming week. I am particularly looking forward to Zainab and Sikandar’s meeting. The preview of the next episode suggested that Zainab might find out Sikandar’s actual plans somehow, I am waiting to find out if that would be the case. Will Rakhshi really move out? Will she get married to Sikandar? Will Zainab ever find closure?

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 16 Story Review – Emotional

Tonight’s episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat was engaging throughout and the emotional element of every episode of this drama surpasses everything else. All the actors deserve due credit for breathing life into their respective characters. Even though some of the scenes tonight had a few flaws, overall the great script and the phenomenal performances make up for these minor directorial errors. Tonight, once again, watching all these elders dedicating their energies towards ensuring that their children do not get what they want was unfortunate as well as ironic! I have finally warmed up to Akram’s character and actually find it quite interesting now. The way Aslam’s extended family forgot all their differences and helped his mother out was the most endearing part of this episode. Pehli Si Mohabbat has all the familiar characters; mohallay ka larka who falls hopelessly in love, a girl who cannot stand for herself, a father whose actions are dictated by his ego, a brother trying hard but failing, a sister who loves her brother unconditionally, a mother who will do anything to make sure that things don’t get worse, a loving nani, a mamoo who loves his sister and is standing by her. Aslam and Zainab’s love continues to be the most refreshing part of the drama. Sheheryar Munawar and Uzma Hassan’s on-screen chemistry makes this relationship truly come alive on screen.

Aslam Is Forced To Leave

History is definitely repeating itself because this time around it was Aslam who had to temporarily move away so that his family could save its honor! Sikandar’s family had to do the same when he was beaten up on the day Zainab got married. Even though Aslam’s mother was more than willing to beg Faiz Ullah for him but Akram’s rage turned out to be the final nail in the coffin. It is difficult to tell whether the mother has actually learned from her mistakes or she is being more flexible now because this time around it’s her son who is in love. I am sure we will get the answers in the upcoming episodes. I am glad the viewers got to see Akram’s perspective in this episode. He loves Aslam but more than that he feels obligated to protect him as well. He has always been a father figure for Akram therefore his feelings make perfect sense. Apart from that, his ‘reputation’ has always been a priority for him therefore he cannot even think about taking the route which his mother was willing to take even now. He is looking at things from a completely different perspective therefore protecting Aslam only means making sure that he is not in touch with Rakhshi and away from the neighborhood. Apart from that, taking revenge is an utmost priority for him since he has a bruised ego.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 16 Story Review – Emotional

Aslam’s scenes with his cousin were also interesting since he could not even feel her pain and wasn’t even sensitive to her feelings. Even though Aslam knows the pain of loving someone and not being able to have them in his life, he does not feel an ounce of sympathy for someone he has rejected. Like all of Faiza Iftikhar’s other heroes, Aslam is also careless at times and he can be quite selfish as well. I somehow find such characteristics of her leading men attractive since she is not scared to show the ‘human’ element of these characters. The welcome Aslam got from his nano and his mamo’s practical advice were also few of the scenes which were really close to reality.

Zainab Finds Out The Truth

Zainab finally found out what happened to Aslam and the discovery rightly came as a complete shock to her. Zainab’s scenes with Murad once again showed his insecurities and the reasons behind them. He feels unloved and even after all these years is scared of leaving his wife alone with her own family even! Zainab mentioned that Murad left her at her mother’s house only for a day but it seemed as if she was there for a few days. Zainab ultimately met Aslam and her reaction suggested that she has a serious heart condition. Will she be out of the picture soon? Her dialogue about dying tonight suggested just that! She made a promise and we might see her keeping it.

It is heartwarming, the way Aslam opens up to Zainab. She is the only one he shares everything with. Zainab’s initial reaction showed that even after everything that happened in the past and even present, her first thought was how all of this must have impacted her mother. This character has a definite screen presence and her relationship with Aslam makes their bond unforgettable.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 16 Story Review – Emotional

Rakhshi and Nargis

Rakhshi continued to cry and suffer because there isn’t much she can do right now! Nargis also wants her to accept everything so that she can do what is expected from her. Tonight, Rakhshi overheard Nargis talking to Farooq and it seems as if she will find out about him soon. Nargis is now talking to Farooq on a regular basis even though she told him that she was not going to stay in touch with him. Nargis’ connection with Farooq makes sense and I am pretty sure there is a reason why he is still in the picture. I am waiting to find out where this track is headed.

Final Remarks

Pehli Si Mohabbat’s solid script and brilliant performances are its main attractions. The characterizations are on point and everything is being taken forward logically! This latest episode wasn’t perfect in terms of execution but the characters and their journeys always have my undivided attention.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 15 Story Review – Questioning Double Standards

Pehli Si Mohabbat continues to question the double standards and hypocrisy of society. The writer is making sure that all the characters add something meaningful to the story. Tonight’s episode covered the aftermath of Sikandar’s actions and Rakhshi’s track, in particular, was intelligently used by the writer to raise some important points. This drama continues to focus on the lack of acceptance by the parents for their children’s feelings. The women in particular have to pay a bigger price because they are the ones holding the ‘family’s honor’. I am so glad that this drama was not promoted as a social drama yet it is perhaps doing a better job of speaking for the women than many other dramas. What if Faiz Ullah showed some flexibility and honored his daughter’s wishes? Things would have been far easier and everyone would have been happy. Similarly, had Akram not been so rigid, Zainab would have been living a different life right now! I love how the writer used the supporting characters such as Nargis and Rakhshi’s friends to ask questions which the viewers would want answers for.

Rakhshi and Aslam

Rakhshi and Aslam’s love story is getting even more complicated with Sikandar in the picture. This also makes it more interesting since there is room for Zainab to step in and perhaps this will lead to some kind of closure for her. Rakhshi’s ‘protest’ was written down and acted out brilliantly. However, it would have been even more impactful if Maya Ali wasn’t wearing so much make-up. Her performance was on point but the make-up did not fit in at all. Maya Ali did exceptionally well while translating Rakhshi’s desperation and helplessness on screen. Aslam seems to be growing stronger with every passing episode. He is also wise especially when it comes to Zainab. He wanted to get in touch with Rakhshi but he wasn’t ‘allowed’ to do so. So far, everyone was thinking that Faiz Ullah was the one responsible for Aslam’s injuries. That is why Rakhshi also questioned him. There wasn’t a single scratch on Aslam’s face and he looked quite radiant for someone who had been beaten so badly. Faiz Ullah seemed like a balanced character but he is turning out to be quite typical, it is painful to watch him treating Rakhshi so roughly.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 15 Story Review – Questioning Double Standards

Nargis Questions Faiz Ullah

Nargis retaliated in this episode and this turned out to be one of the best elements of this recent episode. She is fearless and quite unlike Zainab, she does not believe in compromising. At the same time, there is a loving and sensitive side to her personality which makes her character wholesome. Surely, someone like her was not going to sit back and tolerate these insults. She continued speaking her mind until Faiz Ullah apologized and even after he apologized she gave him much-needed reality checks. This character has been penned down brilliantly since Nargis always has the courage to say things which most women wouldn’t dream of saying. She does not think twice before questioning Faiz Ullah or anyone else who is not being fair. Rabia Butt’s performance never ceases to impress. Nargis is also thinking about Farooq since he has a solid reason for disappearing and he loves her just as much now as he did before. Her scene with Rakhshi suggested that right now protecting her was perhaps more of a priority than anything else. Her confusion is justified given the circumstances.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 15 Story Review – Questioning Double Standards

Zainab and Murad

Zainab and Murad’s scenes were more or less the same. Murad expects to be ‘loved’ and wanted even though his attitude towards his wife is toxic. It didn’t seem as if he was hiding things from Zainab to ‘protect’ her. It is almost as if he wants her all to himself so that he can treat her any way he likes. Zainab cannot stand him either but then it is quite obvious that he has been judgmental and belittling right from the start. She was more than willing to give this marriage a chance when she decided to bury her past but then Sikandar turned up on her nikkah and the past she was willing to bury became an open secret. Uzma Hassan emotes so well that even in all those scenes without dialogues, she makes you understand what Zainab is going through. Paras Masroor has also done complete justice to his character. Even though Murad is toxic, there are also times when you ‘understand’ his frustrations. Like all the other characters the logic behind his toxic behavior does make sense but is obviously not a justification for it.

Final Remarks

This was another meaningful episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat with superb performances. The preview of the next episode was enticing; I am looking forward to Zainab finding out what Sikandar has been up to, more than anything else. Will she step in to stop this marriage from taking place? Right now I am wondering if Faiz Ullah deserves Nargis and if Murad deserves to be forgiven! Will these men redeem themselves? I am waiting to find out.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 14 Story Review – Outstanding Performances

This latest episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat was disturbing and intense. When I titled my review last week “Trouble Ahead”, I had no idea that this trouble will be of such magnitude! This episode showed the ultimate repercussions of everything we have been watching for all these weeks. The setbacks in all the tracks got graver than ever therefore tonight Rakhshi and Aslam’s worst nightmares came true. Although we have witnessed similar scenarios in many other dramas, what set this episode apart from others was the fact that the writer took her time establishing the characters and their backstories hence I felt for all those involved. Also, Faiza Iftikhar always has an actual story to tell therefore she never rushes into showing such scenarios; the intent is never to sensationalize a certain scenario but to fit it in where it is needed. This I believe makes a huge difference since many writers nowadays are more focused on attention-grabbing tactics than telling their stories!

The story has advanced convincingly throughout with the exception of the fact that Akram got easy access to Aslam’s cell phone. Aslam had so much to hide yet his data was not protected by a password, this in my opinion was quite far-fetched. Tonight’s episode was filled with powerful emotions and all the tracks were interlinked as usual. It is unfortunate that most of the characters are trying hard to break free from their past but it is turning out to be a futile exercise. Zainab, Nargis, and even Sikandar are prisoners of their past! They constantly find themselves in situations that remind them of their past. The exceptional performances by all the actors involved made this episode an emotional roller coaster. All the scenes were executed flawlessly which made all the scenarios truly come alive on screen.

The Secret Is Out

Faiz Ullah’s visit to Akram’s house in the previous episode and everything that happened there led Aslam to do something which he might not have done otherwise. He wanted to prove to Faiz Ullah that his upbringing was flawed and Akram’s family was not the one to be blamed. This encounter was acted out and penned down so well. The intent and fears of these characters were as clear as daylight. After the conversation with Nargis, Aslam decided to meet Rakhshi, perhaps because he felt he needed to try harder. The way Faiz Ullah barged in and Aslam begged him not to hurt Rakhshi made this scene intense. The performances were on point throughout and these scenes were directed brilliantly. Sheheryar Munawar totally outdid himself in this episode; I felt for Aslam every step of the way.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 14 Story Review – Outstanding Performances

Faiz Ullah was justified in feeling betrayed but it was unfortunate that he blamed Nargis and beat up his daughter. His ego was hurt more than anything else. Nargis always dreaded being held responsible for Rakhshi and Aslam’s affair and now we know why! Even after trying so hard to avoid such a situation, she ended up being in the middle of a complete mess. It was good to see Rakhshi mustering up the courage to protect Nargis. Nargis also did whatever she could to knock some sense into Faiz Ullah but he was obviously not listening. This was a repeat of everything that happened with Zainab. The beating Rakhshi got after she uttered a few lines in Nargis’ defense was proof enough that Faiz Ullah wouldn’t have supported her had she told him that she was in love with Aslam. Sikandar is turning out to be a vile character; he is playing games and did not think twice before beating Aslam up so violently. I am waiting for the time when perhaps Zainab will have to step in to stop him.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 14 Story Review – Outstanding Performances

Zainab’s Track

Zainab’s track has been meaningful throughout. It shows what the future holds for Rakhshi! Also, the kind of emotional blackmailing that led to Zainab’s wedding is quite similar to Faiz Ullah’s mindset at the moment. Zainab’s mother did not even try to understand her daughter’s feelings and Faiz Ullah also expects Rakhshi to be thankful because he let her live! Keeping appearances is clearly much more important for these parents than looking out for their own daughters and ensuring that they get to make choices that lead to their happiness. These dialogues and the situations reminded me of one of Zainab’s dialogues from the past when she told her mother how she completely failed to see the scars on her soul! Nargis also said something similar today when she asked Faiz Ullah to see if Rakhshi was alright. So much is expected from these daughters but there is little consideration for what they want.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 14 Story Review – Outstanding Performances

Final Remarks

This powerful episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat did complete justice to Aslam and Rakhshi’s love story and at the same time raised many valid questions intelligently. It showed all the perspectives; how young people fall in love, why parents force them to get married to people of their choice and the important role societal pressure plays in everyone’s lives. Faiz Ullah and Zainab’s mother have been so focused on getting approval from other people that they do not even try to see things from their children’s perspective. Aslam is the same; he is constantly looking for validation from society in general by following the list of dos and don’ts! Do parents raise children so that they can one day make them proud by sacrificing their happiness to get a moral certificate from society? Pehli Si Mohabbat really does make it crystal clear that you cannot please everyone and sometimes in trying to do so you make the people you claim to love and protect miserably. This episode was one of the best so far. The performances were outstanding throughout; Sheheryar Munawar, HSY, Rabia Butt, Maya Ali, and Shabbir Jan in particular acted brilliantly. The preview of the next episode was equally intense. I can’t wait to watch what team Pehli Si Mohabbat has in store next!

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 13 Story Review – Trouble Ahead

This latest episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat was yet again filled with emotional scenes and it showed the inner struggles of some of the characters. Zainab’s track kept me guessing since there must be something more to everything we witnessed in this episode. Rakhshi finally decided to apologize to Aslam and Nargis seems to be ‘learning’ from Rakhshi. There were some scenes that were so relatable and others that were somewhat far-fetched. Overall, Pehli Si Mohabbat continues to be interesting. Right now, Nargis’ track has my undivided attention since she is clearly finding it difficult to ignore the fact that the only man she ever loved is back in her life and wants to meet her.

The scene in which she asks Faiz Ullah to stay or take her with him was one of the best scenes tonight since it highlighted her inner struggle and her commitment to this relationship. She is clearly ‘tempted’ otherwise she wouldn’t have called Farooq. We also found out tonight why Murad knows all the details about Zainab’s background through the conversation between Sikandar and his parents. I am glad that so far there is a proper explanation for everything and you are not left wondering for too long. Aslam is turning out to be more mature and protective of Rakhshi than I expected him to be therefore that was another pleasant surprise. Sheheryar Munawar performed exceptionally well in this particular scene.

Important Developments

Few of the central characters tonight made difficult decisions and decided to accept what fate had in store for them. Others took risky decisions and they will face the repercussions in the upcoming episodes. Rakhshi decided to get in touch with Aslam once again even though in the previous episode it seemed as if she would never do that. It seems highly likely that Akram will read the message she sent and show it to her father. Aslam leaving his phone behind was definitely far-fetched, I couldn’t relate to it at all. This was however a really important development since after reading these messages Faiz Ullah will know that Rakhshi was lying to him. With every passing episode, I am actually connecting to Rakhshi’s character more. She does not have the courage to take a stand for herself, she is constantly fearful but at the same time, the love she feels for Aslam makes her give in and takes these risks. Even after everything that happened, she decided to message him even though she told Nargis that she would never meet him but they will meet once again in the upcoming episode and this time around the meeting will lead to an even more dramatic turn than the ones we got to see recently. The fact that Nargis will be present there as well will make the situation even more complicated.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 13 Story Review – Trouble Ahead

Nargis’ conversation with Rakhshi in the opening scenes was so well written. The way she analyzed this entire situation and considered Faiz Ullah lucky was such a beautiful way to put it! The family dynamics in most of these families are like this, some members are suffering to make others happy! Like every other episode, all the scenarios were interlinked. Had Faiz Ullah not gone to confront Yasmin and Akram, Rakhshi perhaps wouldn’t have messaged Aslam. She knew that Aslam will find out that she denied having a relationship with him and he will get hurt. He however never got to read the message! Aslam’s reasoning for covering up for Rakhshi was endearing. He has definitely grown in these few weeks and is also breaking quite a few stereotypes. Sikandar is bent on getting married to Rakhshi only because this time around he wants to be the one who causes pain to Zainab’s family. He knows that he is at an advantage now and does not want to let this opportunity go.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 13 Story Review – Trouble Ahead

Zainab and Murad’s scene was once again acted out so brilliantly that their entire relationship dynamic literally reflected through it. Their scenes make one wonder how they spent so many years of their lives together! Akram’s comments about Murad in the previous episode make this entire situation even more relatable. He can be such a ‘caring’ person when Zainab is in a vulnerable situation but when that is not the case, he makes sure that he belittles and torments her every chance he gets. Instead of showing him as an abusive husband who constantly ridicules his wife, the writer has shown this side of his personality as well. There have been multiple scenes throughout which showed how desperately he wants to feel loved and needed but Zainab simply does not love him!

Final Remarks

This recent episode set the foundations for more important twists and turns in the story in the upcoming episode. All the performances were on point and all the scenes added something important to the story. The preview of the next episode was so exciting that it will be difficult waiting another week to watch it.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 12 Story Review – The Confrontation

Tonight’s episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat was the perfect example of an effective screenplay. Although the confrontation scene was already shown in the preview of this episode, the fact that Nawaz was there with Faiz Ullah at that time was the main reveal that will determine the direction of the story in the upcoming weeks. Who would have thought that this confrontation was going to affect this entire track in such a manner? Sikandar finally made an appearance tonight and I must say that the timing was perfect! I must admit that I was expecting Sikandar to be a ‘victim’ but he is holding a grudge and he wants revenge! Pehli Si Mohabbat’s script continues to its biggest strength since it keeps you on the edge with its multiple tracks that have been intelligently integrated together. There is an element of surprise as well and the writer is taking her time revealing the identities and layers of these characters. These characters are so easy to connect to since they are not black and white. All the performances tonight were convincing which definitely added to the overall impact these scenes had.

The Confrontation

The confrontation scene was the most important one in this episode and it was well-written and perfectly executed. The writer had a clear intent in mind while penning it down and she made sure that everything about this scene from the opening dialogues to the closing ones left an impact. Surprisingly enough, Akram was not the one who started this confrontation; in fact, he tried his best to avoid it. He knew that they were standing in the middle of the market therefore he did not want to create a scene. Akram can be quite unreasonable most of the time but there are also such instances when he reacts only when he is triggered. These older men acted like misguided teenagers because of whatever happened in the past. This clash of egos was the main reason why Akram ended up telling Faiz Ullah about Aslam and Rakhshi’s relationship but he did so in such a manner that there was room left for doubt. Faiza Iftikhar has penned down these scenes cautiously, ensuring that there are no loopholes and there is always a motive behind everything.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 12 Story Review – The Confrontation

Also, this confrontation did not create a misunderstanding or a rift between the brothers since Aslam witnessed everything himself. Clearly, that is not what the writer added this scene to the story! The writer clearly had a bigger objective since the revelation that Rakhshi loved Akram’s brother proved to be the reason Sikandar decided that he would not get married to anyone else except Rakhshi! HSY has performed exceptionally well in some of the intense scenes and Shehryar Munawar never disappoints. The director also deserves tons of credit for ensuring that everyone’s reactions were captured with utmost clarity; the perfect camerawork definitely added to the overall impact this scene had.

Zainab’s Ordeal

Tonight’s episode opened with Zainab and Murad’s scene which revealed a few more details about Zainab’s past. This makes me wonder how Murad knows every little detail about what happened after Zainab’s family found out about her affair. This flashback scene was intense because yet again it showed how much Zainab had endured and she had made an attempt to seek closure by giving Sikandar everything he ever gave her back. The pressure under which she got married and the trauma her family put her through would have been enough to make her turn into the person she is right now. However, the constant mental torture she must have been put through over the years after getting married turned her into a lifeless soul. She is determined not to react and Murad constantly keeps on trying because he wants a reaction from her. It is almost as if this man derives sadistic pleasure out of reminding Zainab about her past and making her feel guilty for her past. He probably feels that he has the right to do so since he was forced to marry someone who did not love her.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 12 Story Review – The Confrontation

I am wondering why he chose to marry her if he knew the truth or did he find everything out after they got married? Zainab’s track is seemingly simple but it offers so much. You want to know more about her backstory and even though she does not react, you fail her pain. I am glad the ‘sabr’ dialogue was added in the previous episode because it must have made things clearer for all those viewers who cannot relate to Zainab’s ‘acceptance’ of all the mental torture she is being subjected to repeatedly. For the first time in this episode, it seemed as if Zainab felt angry and found it difficult to contain herself. Masroor Paras and Uzma Hassan have translated their characters brilliantly on screen. When Murad apologized to Zainab, it felt as if he meant it and he would never go back to being the abusive husband again but now that he is back to being his old self, he is equally convincing. Uzma Hassan has made Zainab’s sabr come alive on screen without making it come across as annoying.

Aslam and Rakhshi

Rakhshi might be completely helpless but innocence makes her character more likable than annoying. There are those scenes when you do see Rakhshi as a scared young girl who is also sensitive and also someone who grew up without a mother. While Maya Ali performed brilliantly in all the scenes tonight, her make-up however looked completely out of place yet again. She translated Rakhshi’s fear impeccably on screen and it also went well with her character. All her previous scenes showed that she was always reluctant to go ahead with this relationship but she always gave in because of the love she felt for Aslam. Aslam on the other hand continued to try to reach her and held nothing against Rakhshi. He continues to be an uncomplicated character that is emotional but not overdramatic unless the situation is such. Even with all his immaturity and at times foolishness, he is a likable character. I must say that these leading characters have to be the most basic characters in the drama and their story so far is the simplest of all the tracks.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 12 Story Review – The Confrontation

Farooq Is Back

In the midst of all the chaos, Nargis got a call from Farooq and that smile on her face was really meaningful. Will she stay in touch with him? Their conversation was not shown but this will lead to complicating Nargis’ track as well. Farooq is no longer her past, he is back and in touch with her.

Final Remarks

This was one of the best episodes of Pehli Si Mohabbat since with this episode not only did the story move forward but there were quite a few surprises in store too. Except for the phone call scene in which the call was disconnected shortly after and Maya Ali’s loud make-up everything else about this episode was perfectly executed. Will Zainab get in touch with Sikandar to stop him from getting married to Rakhshi? What do you think?

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 11 Story Review – Misunderstandings

Pehli Si Mohabbat’s beautifully written meaningful conversations continue to be its biggest strength. We get to watch such situations quite often in dramas but most often the writers do not spell the underlying hypocrisy and double standards of the society out loud in the form of dialogues the way Faiza Iftikhar has done in this drama. There were so many conversations tonight which highlighted privileges enjoyed by men in our society. The writer has however kept her vision broader by showing that the men ‘in power’ are most often the ones who exploit their position and run everyone’s lives. Therefore, we have men like Aslam and Sikandar as well. These hard-hitting dialogues reflect the different complications of the family system which has been accepted as ‘normal’ yet it is not based on equality at all!

Watching Pehli Si Mohabbat has been a pleasantly surprising experience since I was expecting to watch (only) a powerful love story and not a drama that would highlight social issues which are most often not even considered ‘issues’, in such a remarkable manner. While I am watching an episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat I do not actually realize how many meaningful dialogues were intelligently integrated into a single episode. It is only when I sit down to write the review that I realize how effectively this drama is talking about things we do not often talk about.

Mothers Take The Lead

This was another one of those episodes in which the supporting characters stood out yet again. While Aslam and Rakhshi’s track is the central story around which all the tracks revolve, the well-defined supporting characters in this drama have more surprises in store than the main leads. Tonight’s episode belonged to the mothers because of the way they stood by their children. Aslam’s mother and Nargis both handled the entire situation so gracefully; we definitely need to see such mothers in dramas. We get to see caring but helpless mothers all the time but rarely do we get to see the mothers actually standing up for their children. Aslam’s mother obviously changed her approach because of her previous decision and Nargis can relate to Rakhshi’s pain. These mothers are not ‘perfect’, they have made mistakes but now they are trying really hard to fix things for their children.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 11 Story Review – Misunderstandings

I was not expecting Aslam’s mother to be so calm and calculated while talking to Faiz Ullah. She tried her best to convince Faiz Ullah and even after being insulted, she did not lose her cool. Later on, she was more interested in knowing whatever Akram was hiding from her and was all for saving Rakhshi’s ‘reputation’. Saba Faisal is an exceptional actress with a definite screen presence; she acted brilliantly tonight.

Nargis continued to support Rakhshi and she was just as cautious as Aslam’s mother while handling the situation. One thing that stood out more than any other in this episode was Rakhshi’s complete failure to take a stand for her own self. Now we know why she was always shown as such a scared and meek girl. This weakness will ultimately determine her future. Nargis continued to convince Rakhshi that she needed to tell her father the truth but it is quite apparent that she just cannot do that! Rabia Butt fits this role so well which makes Nargis’ character even more impactful. The fact that Nargis isn’t always a pleasant personality and can at times be exceptionally blunt, makes her character more ‘real’.

Faiz Ullah and Aslam’s mother’s meeting was written down in an interesting manner since the dialogues were such that for a minute it seemed as if he had figured out that Aslam and Rakhshi were having an affair. The fact that he had just visited his friend and finalized the wedding plans made his reaction even more believable. The conversation Sikandar’s parents had was also meaningful! Zainab’s track did not get a lot of screen time tonight but that one scene was intense and highly relatable since sabr is all that she has!

Aslam and Rakhshi

Aslam was over the moon at the beginning of this episode even though Rakhshi was not answering his calls! That changed completely by the end of the episode. Rakhshi is an escapist who does not like confrontations at all; she worries more and acts less. Her crying is definitely repetitive and annoying but then that’s who she is! She was waiting for a miracle while dreading that her father will not consider this proposal at all. The scene in which Nargis told her the kinds of reactions she should be expecting from her father was well written. Maya Ali is usually comfortable with wearing minimal make-up but in this drama, even in such scenes, she has been seen wearing more make-up than necessary. Aslam understands Rakhshi more than ever now therefore he does not even expect her to take a stand.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 11 Story Review – Misunderstandings

Final Remarks

Misunderstandings and mistrust dimmed the ‘ray of hope’ tonight and Akram’s confrontation with Faiz Ullah in the next episode will be the final nail in the coffin! I am waiting to see what the writer has in store for us next. The upcoming episode will be filled with intense scenes and it could be the end of Rakhshi and Aslam’s love story! Akram is already furious because of the refusal and he is only looking for an excuse to have a confrontation with Faiz Ullah. Faiz Ullah is also mistrusting him more than usual now therefore he might just be the one to start it. Also, I am waiting to ‘meet’ Sikandar since so far we have only ‘heard’ about him, he has yet to make an appearance.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 10 Story Review – Ray of Hope

This latest episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat focused primarily on Aslam and Rakhshi with Zainab’s track standing out yet again. This character has been etched-out brilliantly; there are so many different shades to her personality and each one leaves an impact. Uzma Hassan owns this role completely; the way she has portrayed Zainab’s resignation to her fate but her refusal to accept the same fate for her brother is beyond impressive. The kind of relationship she has with her brother isn’t just one which siblings share normally. They have so much in common and both of them have tried to protect each other in whichever way they could. The writer has intelligently knitted both these tracks together. The flashback scenes while Zainab sat down with Aslam to console him made for one of the best scenes we have seen in this drama so far. Apart from the background score which was rather overdramatic in the scenes showing Akram’s rage, overall, the execution was on point. Shehryar Munawar, Uzma Hassan, and Saba Faisal acted superbly tonight. Although Rakhshi character so far is rather simple, Maya Ali has made sure that she translates all of Rakhshi’s emotions on-screen in such a way that I find her ups and downs relatable. Aslam’s ability to bounce back after every setback makes his character likable.

Taking a Stand

Aslam had his mind made up in the previous episode when he went to talk to his mamoo and tonight when he was beaten up for doing so he was more than ready for the outcome. The fact that he was dancing at his friend’s wedding after causing the upheaval went to show that Aslam indeed is one-of-a-kind! His rage, frustration, and determination made for an interesting combination of emotions. Shehryar Munawar was convincing in all these scenes. Aslam has a rather unusual way of dealing with even the most serious situations which I find really interesting! He forgives and forgets fast. Tonight, even after everything that happened, he went to Akram to not only apologize but also thank him! Had he not done this, Akram wouldn’t have shown the kind of flexibility he showed later on. It was also good to see Akram actually regretting hitting his brother. I am glad that he keeps the viewers guessing and his character is not black. He has certain flaws and can be insensitive at times too but he is not void of emotions completely. So, that is how the impossible happened tonight with Zainab playing an important role in this entire scenario.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 10 Story Review – Ray of Hope

Zainab and Aslam’s scene together was beautiful! They bond on a different level, they always have. They are not like their older brother at all which is why they understand what the other is going through. Uzma Hassan’s performance in the scene showing Zainab pleading with his mother to do something about the situation was effortlessly intense and gripping. Saba Faisal was equally convincing as the mother who wasn’t sure whose side to take and what to do in this situation.

Meaningful Conversations

Just like every other episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat, this one also had quite a few meaningful conversations. The opening scene once again highlighted the hypocrisy of society. The writer has intelligently used Nargis and Faiz Ullah’s track to show the double standards of society. The brief conversation between Akram and Ishrat when he asked her who Aslam was in love with was so meaningful! Even though Ishrat is a supporting character in the play but somehow she has always caught my attention. Her everyday life has always been the perfect personification of wives and daughters-in-law who lead simple life. Tonight for the first time her dialogues reflected the challenges faced by many such wives who have to juggle different relationships and there are so many expectations from them. Nausheen Shah is an amazing actress; she always makes her presence felt.

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 10 Story Review – Ray of Hope

Zainab’s Track

Murad is back to being the person he was all along! This did not come as a surprise but actually was quite realistic. Zainab can be so fierce and determined when it comes to protecting her brother but she does not even try when she has to protect herself! She has given up completely and is willing to put up with all the abuse she is subjected to on daily basis. She feels she has nothing left to fight for. Murad’s character has been penned down so well too! He is a self-righteous man who considers it his birthright to judge not just his wife but also her family! Zainab’s mother did not confront him about the physical abuse because he is intimidating enough as it is. She also knows that if he decides to leave Zainab, Akram will be furious! Murad understands the situation all too well therefore he keeps on tormenting Zainab. It seemed as if he came to pick Zainab after he found out what happened last night. This couple seems to have fallen into a pattern where Zainab bears everything Murad says silently and he keeps going waiting for a reaction! ‘Aap ki wapsi achi lag rahi hei’ was another meaningful dialogue!

Pehli Si Mohabbat Episode 10 Story Review – Ray of Hope

Final Remarks

There is finally some hope for Aslam and Rakhshi after whatever happened tonight. However, it is highly unlikely that things will go forward smoothly. Will Faiz Ullah prove to be samaj ki deewar? Pehli Si Mohabbat has my undivided attention because it offers so much more than another love story.

Pehchan Episode 4 – He Loves Me…. He Loves Me Not!

Do opposites really attract? Both the couples in this play have nothing in common; Kukoo and Khurram are worlds apart and Laila and Mansoor are like two completely opposite people who have been caged together for life. Laila tries her best to hold on to every single remotely loving/caring gesture by her new husband; she spends every minute trying to convince herself that this stranger who isn’t really letting her in to his life as openly as she would have wanted him to, actually loves her the way a husband should love his wife.

Mansoor’s mother was right, he is “farmabardar” no doubt. He knows how to keep his mother happy. He could have taken a stand to marry Kukoo but he didn’t do so because he knows she will be a part of his life even if she is not his wife. This man has no respect for women at all; he couldn’t care less about their feelings either. The only woman he truly cares about is his mother.

There was a time when Laila lived a life very different from the one that she will be living from now on. Laila was outgoing, adventurous, progressive and ambitious but her mother was in such a rush to push her towards the next phase of life that she totally forgot that this should have been more of Laila’s decision than hers. I think the scene in which Laila finds out that her room had been completely changed said a great deal. Is change really good? Why are some parents so eager to introduce these changes into their children’s lives without even giving their children’s likes and dislikes a second thought. Laila looks up to her father like a role model and for good reasons too. She would have liked to be married to someone like him but Mansoor is nothing like the lively, fun, understanding and positive person that Laila’s father is. It is sad that parents like him do not get to have more of a say in their children’s lives. Laila is her father’s daughter, she is positive and does not fret over things that may upset her. Mansoor’s mother isn’t exactly the perfect mother in law and Mansoor is definitely not the ideal husband but we still see Laila making the most of the situation. She loves her husband and wants to be loved by him although she barely knows him! Because that is how every girl is expected to feel after marriage.

pehchan

Laila’s mother wants her to enjoy her new life; she has given away everything “old” which belonged to Laila. These old things probably meant more to Laila than anything new that she has now. Laila doesn’t want to feel like a guest in her own house but she happily accepts the fact that this is not her house any more and she should move on. The dialogue “Ab mei chot ke dur se koi khel na khelon” says a lot about her personality. She places other people’s happiness above her own that was something which was very apparent from the telephonic conversation Laila had with her father before leaving for Murree.

I feel for Laila and Kukoo both. Both of them have more than their fair share of unhappiness but they are equally brave and positive. Kukoo may have tried to end her life once but overall she is indeed a strong woman married to a man who will keep on exploiting her for as long as he can. Khurram “steals” from Kukoo but when she offers him money for leaving her, he declines. Khurram is just as controlling and selfish as Mansoor.

Mrs. Khan’s subtle messages to Kukoo are ignored by her every time. The relationship between these two women is special and relatable. The scenes between Laila and her father were really well done too. The conversations between the two were meaningful, engaging and touching. Mansoor’s character has been etched out and acted out brilliantly. I feel that Sohail Sameer shouldn’t have been forced to say a few lines in English in every episode if he was not comfortable with the language. It just seems out of character when he has a difficult time pronouncing every single word. He is doing a brilliant job and would have been just as convincing without the use of English language. Overall, the play has been directed really well; the creativity and hard work shows in every scene. I love all the old songs that have been played in the drama so far. Pehchan has a very different feel to it. There was a time when I thought that the play maybe too slow but now I feel that it is more subtle than slow. Definitely looking forward to the next episode.

Pehchan – Last Episode

0

“Aap ko happy ending pasand hai na? Mujhe bhi!” Because happy endings don’t always mean that a couple with the most dysfunctional marriage resolves all their differences magically in the last episode. Sometimes happy endings can be convincing too. Laila preferred Saadi’s friendship even though Mansoor did his best to convince her that she was lost without him. Tonight I felt like Mansoor really was desperate to get Laila back not only because he wanted to control her but he wanted her back in his life. People like Mansoor do not change of course and I am glad that Laila knew that only too well, which is why she refused to take him back. Mansoor realized that he had lost someone very precious and there was no way to win Laila back now, regret and remorse was all he was left with. It was good to see Mansoor’s real self coming out when Laila told him that the marriage was over because otherwise the change in his personality would have been unpersuasive.

Laila’s mother’s ego did not allow her to accept her daughter for what she was now wholeheartedly but the way things were moving forward there was definitely hope for the future. Mrs. Khan consoled herself with lies like always; yes some things never change and I am glad that Mrs. Khan’s track was wrapped up like this because people’s lives and personalities don’t change overnight. Kukoo and Khurram ended up being good friends; Kukoo’s letter to Khurram at the end was elaborate and pretty much summed up everyone’s life.

I am glad that Pehchan ended tonight because even a die-hard fan like me was feeling that the conversations were getting repetitive. The ending was gratifying in every way, I could not have asked for more. I think Pehchan was the best play of the season because it excelled in all the departments in which a drama can stand out. Bee Gul and Khalid Ahmed gave a brand new treatment to an age-old story and added the zing which a good drama needs. It may have been too slow and unconventional for many viewers therefore it did not the kind of attention that commercial plays get but I hope that will not stop the producers, writer and the director from continuing experimenting.

p1

I feel like I owe Bee Gul in particular a big thanks for not banking on the more easy (which don’t require a lot of thinking) and conventional ways to get attention from the viewers. Her dramas have not been getting the appreciation which they truly deserve but she continues writing artistic scripts and does not rely on run-of-the-mill-stories. All of her characters are multi-layered and definitely not black and white, with the exception of Laila’s mother. Her characters are so real that you can’t help but connect with them, feel for them and understand them even when it is a character as negative as that of Mansoor. I also love the way these characters are revealed to the viewers gradually; the way Laila and Kukoo’s journey of self-discovery was penned down and executed was perfect. I would really like to see a male character as the main protagonist in one of Bee Gul’s upcoming plays because until now she has been focusing on women leads.

Khalid Ahmed brings out the best in Bee Gul’s scripts because he understands the depth of the characters and the narrative. Not just that he made Pehchan a masterpiece by making it esthetically pleasing. Khalid Ahmed’s direction proved that he believes that his viewers are just as intelligent as he is unlike most Pakistani directors who think that the viewers will not understand the underlying messages in the story unless they spoon-feed it to them. There were quite a few scenes in every episode that conveyed the feelings and situations of the characters beautifully even when there were no dialogues involved. I personally feel that Pehchan was a labour of love; Bee Gul assisted Khalid Ahmed herself which must have made a huge difference too and which goes to show how seriously she took this drama. The Director Of Photography Naveed Malik deserves special appreciation for a job well done. A big shout-out to the producers Seema and Razi-ud-din Ahmed for giving the Pakistani viewers a reason to believe that there are still people out there who care about more than just the TRPs. We definitely need more people like them in the drama industry.

p2

I really want to thank the person/s responsible for choosing the cast. It was an absolute pleasure watching Alishba Yusef play the character of Laila. Laila’s feelings and personality underwent a major transformation within two years of her marriage and Alishba Yusef portrayed different shades of Laila’s personality impeccably. Sohail Sameer outdid himself as Mansoor. He played the bad guy without going overboard, it is amazing how a good script and direction can bring out the best in an actor. I don’t have enough words to praise Iffat Omer; everything about her was perfect from the acting to her make-up and hairdos. Parveen Malik played Laila’s mother’s role very well and her character which was very different from the roles she has played till now. We may not have liked her character for obvious reasons but she was definitely in her comfort zone. Qazi Wajid and his character both were adorable; the chemistry that Qazi Wajid and Alishba Yusef shared on screen brought the father-daughter relationship to life. Anita Camphor did complete justice to her character, she is a very gifted actress.  Sumbul Shahid played the role of the proud mother of a son perfectly. Fawad Khan unfortunately brought out the worst in Khurram’s character, he has a long way to go! Faris Khalid and Saad gradually grew on me in the last few episodes but in the beginning he was sticking out like a sore thumb. I think the reason for that could be that Faris Khalid wasn’t very comfortable with Urdu language. The OST of the play was beautiful, Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s poetry coupled with Arshad Mahmud’s composition and Erum Nafees’ beautiful voice gave the viewers a song which they can listen to over and over again.

Watching Pehchan and reviewing it every week has been a delightful and insightful experience. A big shout-out to all those readers who read the reviews regularly and shared their thoughts here.

Pehchan – Episode 8

Aap ka mali buhat mature hai mommy kyunke vo poodu se pyar krne mei believe hi nahi krta!

Well said Laila! But guess what? Your mom’s not listening! It is amazing how the writer has shown heaps of expectations that are attached to the bride after marriage and how easy everything is for the man. As long as the man is earning enough money and is good looking no one questions his mysterious behavior. In fact his behavior is justified by calling him mature, serious and stable – attributes that set Mansoor apart from other men! Only Laila knows that there is something just not right because no matter how hard she tries her husband shows little interest in her. Laila will never be good enough for Mansoor because he already has her where he wants her. He is more interested in Kukoo because she is not giving Mansoor the attention he wants. Kukoo finds it difficult to have a relationship with Mansoor especially after getting to know Laila so well. I love the way Kukoo’s character has been etched out. Iffat Omer was the perfect choice for playing this character; she brings out the best in Kukoo’s character.

Mansoor and his mother’s reaction to the news of Laila’s pregnancy was shocking for Laila. She was obviously expecting something very different. On one hand her father pampers her to the fullest and on the other her husband does not even hold her hand to assure her of his support and love. Alishba Yusef looked stunning today in all the scenes; she plays the naive, sweet and confused Laila with perfection. Laila’s frequent visits to her parents’ house show that she needs a dose of her father’s love every day to keep her going. She would want her father to come rescue her but she also knows that she must pick herself up every time and give this marriage her best because she has to make it work. Laila does not ask for more than a wife should from her husband but Mansoor finds it very difficult to even exchange a few words with her.

pehchan4

The way Laila and Kukoo had a heart-to-heart conversation tonight was actually very ironic. While Kukoo knows exactly who Laila is and where she stands in Mansoor’s life, Laila has no idea what relationship Kukoo once had with her husband. She cannot even imagine that Kukoo is the reason why Mansoor keeps his distance from her. I really liked this new turn in the story, I was most definitely not expecting the two families to get closer like this. Kukoo is nothing like the other woman that we see in our dramas a little too often. There was a time when Mansoor made a commitment with Kukoo but she is not going to punish Laila for something that Mansoor did. She understands that Laila is not at fault. Mansoor made a choice and she wants him to stick to it. Keeping a distance from Mandoor is not easy because he understands her the way Khurram never will but she is trying her best.

pehchan5

Mrs. Khan and Kukoo’s conversation was very interesting indeed. Was Mrs. Khan really talking about the delivery boy? I think not! I felt for Laila every step of the way in tonight’s episode and the other woman in this play has to be one of the most likeable characters in that particular category. Sohail Sameer has nailed his character; honestly speaking I did not expect him to do this well. I would give full marks to team Pehchan for giving a brand new treatment to a very old story and turning it into something very different and entertaining. This drama has a whole new feel to it and I can’t help but appreciate the way the story is being taken forward.

Pehchan – Episode 6

Poor Laila; she is sensitive, sweet and genuine but fate has tied her with a man who is heartless, cruel and extremely selfish. Laila is trying hard to make sense of the relationship she has with Mansoor. She wants to believe that he loves her but as time goes by Mansoor is giving her very little reason to continue wishing and hoping that he does love her. Mansoor has rejected Laila over and over again in more ways than one. He has never made a conscious effort to come up to her expectations but he knows absolutely nothing about handling rejection himself. This man wants complete compliance by his wife even though he does not have feelings for her. Mansoor’s attraction towards Laila and Kukoo both appears to be strictly physical. There was a time when I used to think that Mansoor and Kukoo were soul mates who met at a bad time but after watching tonight’s episode I got the feeling that Mansoor is incapable of feeling that way about any woman at all.

Kukoo isn’t even trying to move on; her life has taken a very unexpected turn after Mansoor’s wedding and she isn’t even sure how to deal with the situation. Khurram’s promises are nothing more than false hopes which are not worth banking on. The meeting between Mansoor and Kukoo tonight seemed to be a direct reaction of the way their spouses treated them. Kukoo was getting back at Khurram forgetting his promise of taking her out for dinner and Mansoor was punishing Laila for not being an “obedient” wife. Iffat Omer is absolutely brilliant as Kukoo; she does not want to be the other woman but she cannot let go of Mansoor either. I think the only reason Kukoo keeps on going back to Mansoor is that she is lonely. Khurram’s dialogue about not being unfaithful was spot on and timed perfectly. Does being faithful make up for all his other weaknesses? I am not sure! Are there more ways than one to be unfaithful to someone? These were some of the questions that popped in my head when I heard Khurram declaring his faithfulness.

pehchan1

My favorite scene from tonight’s episode had to be the opening scene in which Laila asks Mansoor to “forgive” her for her behaviour. The other scene which said a thousand words was the one in which Kukoo starts cleaning the mirror while giving her client a haircut; she obviously could not take her mind off the message Mansoor left for her. Wiping memories out of the mind is never this easy and simple! Kukoo would like to erase all those memories of the past and present but those memories are probably all that she has and she actually does want to hold on to them.

Laila’s conversation with her mother in law said a lot about who Mansoor takes after. The most outstanding aspect of this play till now has been that every scene and all the conversations add something to the play. There are hardly any dramas on air right now which do not give away unnecessary details to kill time. The scene in which Laila goes to meet her parents was also beautifully done. It isn’t easy for a girl like Laila, who has shared every tiny detail of her life with her father, to hide something so big from him but she does not have a choice. She knows that she has to make this marriage work; letting her mother down is not an option.

pehchan2

The OST of the play is beautiful. It is definitely one of those songs which you want to hear over and over again. I am extremely impressed by the quality of direction, acting and script of this play. Sohail Sameer has nailed his character and Alishba Yusef has breathed life into Laila’s character. Iffat Omer’s character has to be the most complicated one in the play but she portrays Kukoo’s insecurities, loneliness, helplessness and vulnerability effortlessly. Sumbul Shahid has played the proud mother of a “perfect” son superbly.

Thank you Team Pehchan for giving me something worthwhile to watch; Pehchan has to be the only play on air right now which I look forward to and enjoy reviewing.

Pehchan – Episode 5

“Kisi ki zindagi ke faisle krna bara sawab ka kaam hai”…Laila’s mother did not stop for a second to think about the irony in this statement. She is too busy planning the perfect life for her daughter to think about anything else…not even her daughter’s likes, dislikes or happiness. Now that she has successfully married her daughter off in a family most people around her can only dream of marrying their daughters in, she wants Laila to have a son soon! Because that is the only way in which Laila can have a strong hold in her new house. Laila’s father is quick to remind her mother that sons don’t come with guarantees but nothing in the world can change the way Laila’s mother thinks. It is sad how she underestimates herself and her daughter. The way she constantly keeps on praising her daughter’s mother in law and her husband goes to show that she has no self-worth. Laila’s father on the other hand values his daughter the way she deserves to be valued but has very little say in the house.

pehchan1

Mansoor’s mother on the other hand knows her “value” only too well. Not only does she come from a wealthy background but she is after all the mother of an ideal son who in her eyes is perfect in every way. The way these two women look at their children defines the kind of individuals their children have grown up to be. While Laila thinks she has to prove herself at every step, Mansoor does not feel the need to do so. Laila is still trying very hard to understand her husband and rightly so too. Alishba Yusef is outstanding as Laila; she portrays Laila’s sensitivity and simplicity perfectly.

My opinion about Mansoor went even more downhill after watching tonight’s episode. He does treat women like objects – meant to fulfill his needs and desires. The way he treated Laila and everything that Kukoo said about Mansoor went to show that he would never put anyone or anything above his own feelings. Mansoor is a charmer in his own weird way and he knows it only too well. He only lets Kukoo go after their chance meeting because he knows that she still loves him and he can have her back anytime he wants. The chance meeting of Mansoor and Kukoo was really well done. Iffat Omer owns her character completely and Sohail Sameer manages to pull it off although he does not have all that it takes to play this character. He manages to convince you that he indeed is a charmer, which in my opinion is grand!

pehchan2

When Kukoo packed her bags and left, I thought she was finally going to leave Khurram but later on when she came back and asked him those questions I couldn’t help but relate to her desire of being loved by a real man! Khurram, in my opinion is a sorry excuse of a man. Did Kukoo fall out of love with Khurram only after Mansoor came into her life? Well her conversation with Mrs. Khan surely suggested just that.

pehchan3

I love this show till now; watching it is like reading a beautiful novel. The credit for that goes to the writer and the director both. The way we are being shown every little detail in beyond brilliant. There is nothing overdramatic about the play but you can’t help but relate to and understand the characters. Tonight’s episode was beautifully directed, like always. The scene in which Laila talks to her parents on the phone was very touching and brilliantly done in all aspects. The only problem was that when Laila comes out in the balcony with a towel tied around her head, it was a little too obvious that her hair was already dried plus the viewers “got the message” any way! I loved the way different tracks in the story were handled especially in this episode.

Do share your thoughts about this latest episode even if you disagree with how I feel about it.

Pehchan – Episode 19

0

Kayee rishtey koriyu ke mol bikay tu yeh chat mere haath ayee jahan mein sans le sakti hun, jee sakti hun! After watching this episode I am even more sure now that this time around Laila is not going to let anyone stand in her way. She has found her pehchan; she may feel sorry for Mansoor because like Mrs. Khan she may not like him, she might not have forgiven him but she feels sorry for him! Mrs. Khan calls the strange bond which she has with her husband “love” although it is anything but that! She does not like him but she loves him! Which in my opinion means that she is so used to having this man in her life now that she is not sure how life will be without him. Mansoor’s apology seemed fake; he realized that it was his wedding anniversary only after his friend called him. I think he wants Laila back in his life so that he can control her. And I also think that the writer added this twist in the story at this point because she probably wants the viewers to keep on guessing if Laila will forgive Mansoor or not. I am sure that Laila will make up her mind in the next episode because until now the writer has not stretched anything about the story only to gain the attention of the viewers. It was rather ironic the way Mrs. Khan reacted when Laila told her that Mansoor visited.

pehchan6

Laila does not see the world with other people’s eyes now and she does not care about what others want. This is the reason why she forgives her mother so easily; she has no expectations from anyone but on the contrary she wants to “rescue” her mother. Laila’s mother does not show an ounce of concern let alone love for her daughter; I am disliking her character more with every passing episode. Laila’s dialogue ” mujhe Mansoor ka nahi khud apna dur hai, mein buhat bekhof ho gaye hun…apni bahadri ka dur hai bus!” clearly showed that she may get tired every now and then but she is confident enough to make her own decisions now. It has been exactly a year since Laila finally gave up on her husband completely and she has surely come a long way since then

I thought I would never say this but I am definitely warming up to Saadi. He is nothing like the typical male characters we see on our screens all the time. The scene between Laila and Saadi when he brings Laila the candle stand was very cute. The romantic lines were delivered in such a manner that they did not sound very cheesy and I actually thought Laila was being very honest when she called Saadi “dheet”!

Some of the conversations in the first half of this episode sounded repetitive like the one about Mansoor’s pehchan and ego. The conversation between Laila and Mrs. Khan about vegetables and humans did not really strike a chord with me. Maybe because there were many heavy-duty dialogues in tonight’s episode therefore some of them seemed forced. The light-hearted moments between Laila and Saadi were a breath of fresh air.

Do share your thoughts about tonight’s episode.

Pehchan – Episode 18

0

“Hur roz mujhe yeh lagta hai ke bus jo hona tha ho chuka, saari azmaishein khatam ho gaye, ab honey ko reh hi kya gaya hai magar hur roz aik naye jung aik naya mahaz…kub meri himat jawab de jaye gi, kub mei is meidan-e-jung mei maari jaun gi, ya mei yun hi lrti rahu gi!” The path that Laila has chosen is most certainly not an easy one, the hurt that she feels at every single step when her mother makes things even more difficult for her is being portrayed brilliantly by Alishba Yusef. Laila does not blame her mother for a second because despite of everything that she has put Laila through, she understands her majburis. The way Laila kept on hoping that her mother will at some point share her happy moments if not do anything to support her was shown superbly. Even after Laila leaves her mother’s house because she knows that she is not welcome there any more, she is ecstatic to see her mother when she comes to meet her at Kukoo’s salon. Laila does not even react when her mother asks her to give up her share of the property because that is what the man of the house wants. Even when her mother hands over the baby’s toys to her, as if saying that Laila should never come back to her parents house again, Laila does not judge her. Laila is beyond all these things now; she does not want to rely on her brother or husband’s money, she wants to make her own jannat with her own efforts. Laila is ready to make space for new relations but she also knows that leaving her mother and Bhaiya behind is not going to be easy. There are memories attached to these people and Laila clearly loves both of them that is why she is so willing to forgive them! Laila’s call to her mother after she gets her apartment was one of the many scenes in tonight’s episode that went to show that Khalid Ahmed and Bee Gul both believe in showing and not telling. Laila’s mother answers the phone only in the hope that her daughter may have changed her mind and when she finds out that Laila has something completely different to share with her, she hangs up instantly. Kukoo explained the reason behind Laila’s mother’s attitude brilliantly, she has to pay this price….make this sacrifice to continue being the queen of her house.

Untitled

Laila is a POW now, just like her father said, ” POW bun jana zulm na sehna”. Things would have been entirely different for Laila had her father been alive. Laila has the convenient option of going to her husband’s mahal because after all she is expected to do just that. Like her mother says, ” mard mei jitne bhi aaib hun, aurat apni aulad aur aram ke liye guzara kr leti hai”… this is SO true! Our society is filled with women who put up with the worst only because of their children or because they have a roof on their head and get free meals. Laila has taken a path less travelled and therefore her experiences are going to be very different from that of her mother’s, Mrs. Khan’s and other women like them but she is ready to face those challenges. This play also goes to show that sometimes people who are not related to you support you more than your close relatives. Kukoo and Mrs. Khan have always been there for Laila and so has Saadi. Laila has only been able to come this far because she had support from all these friends. The conversation between the three friends about Mansoor and Kukoo’s statement about Mansoor that there was no room for improvement in his life was just what the doctor ordered. A man like him certainly deserves to be pitied. The scene on the dinner table when Laila asks Kukoo is she was waiting for someone and she replies, “nahi ab mujhe kisi ka intizar nahi” was brilliant.

Mansoor’s mother is already looking for a new wife for him, we saw her raving about her son’s wealth and thanda mizaj while Mansoor shouted in the background! The list of khoobiyan she wanted in her bahu was never-ending. Mansoor, on the other hand still has a very bruised ego which will not be satisfied until Laila comes pleading to him. The fact that Kukoo and Laila both can do without him now is eating him up. Laila is warming up to Saadi and this time she does not decline when Saadi puts the ring on her finger. Laila shared with Saadi how she used to be there for her brother when he was a baby. I must say that I found it hard to relate to the story because if Laila used to take care of her baby brother like that she must be at least 9 or 10 years older than him but she just got married and her brother is already married. Laila must be in her early twenties so that means her brother should be a teenager then…correct me if I am wrong.

I really felt for poor Alishba tonight; Saadi could not take his hands out of his pockets because it was that cold and Alishba was wearing a chiffon saree. Another thing which is a little too odd is that Laila has absolutely no help just like Kukoo, not even someone to clean up the tables etc. Other than that, this episode and the drama in general is picture perfect. Every episode is full of meaningful dialogues and scenes that leave you speechless. Every little gesture suggests something or the other. Pehchan is keeping me glued to my seat because every scene has something significant to offer. In my opinion this episode belonged to Laila – Alishba Yusef. She was the perfect choice for playing this character. The wonderful thing about this drama is that you are able to connect to all the three women in the play. Kukoo has clearly moved on but will Mrs. Khan find her own pehchan too?

Pehchan – Episode 17

0

Mansoor gave his “verdict” on Laila’s character in tonight’s episode when Laila’s mother called him in the hope that he will be willing to patch things up with Laila. Mansoor thinks that a woman who leaves with her daughter for her mother’s house in the middle of the night is a “hooker” but what do you call a man who goes alone to meet his lover in the middle of the night? The double standards regarding men and women that exist in our society were highlighted in tonight’s episode more than ever. Laila’s brother may not have been there for her when she needed him the most but he still feels that he has the right to tell Laila how to live her life. Laila is made to feel like she is the protector of her family’s dignity and in order to keep her family’s dignity intact she must sacrifice her own self-respect and happiness. Laila’s mother does not give her daughter an ounce of respect. I don’t agree with the way Laila’s mother is handling the situation, she is only making things worse for her daughter but I can definitely relate to her character. Our society in general has this attitude towards women; people love to label them and they love to judge them maybe because they are easy victims. And women who go out in search of their own pehchan face the same difficulties which Laila is facing. The dialogue about the kind of relationship which Laila shared with her brother when they were younger was very poignant .. (Zolpidem) ” lekin bhaiya phir aik din bara ho gaya “ !! And then he realized that he was a man, which made him far more superior than his sister and that changed everything!

Untitled

Laila’s mother thinks that a muraba or some spiritual healing might give Laila the patience she needs in order to put up with the problems of shadi shuda zindagi which are generally considered normal because every woman at some point goes through everything that Laila has been through and is expected to put up with. Now the question is that if something wrong is very widely accepted in the society, does that make it right? When Laila’s mother said “insan sub kuch bardasht kr leta hai”, I found it ironic because what she actually meant was that a woman is capable of enduring anything at all! Dialogues like “mard ka ego hota hai” clearly meant that women don’t have an ego or self-respect because only one person in a marriage can keep their self-esteem intact! After all ego hota hai, hoti nahi hai!!

Laila thinks about the time she spent with Mansoor, starting with the day she got married to the day when Mansoor handed her the phone asking her to talk to his girlfriend. She also thinks about the conversations she used to have with her father and her father’s words reinforce the idea that she too deserves to be happy. She does not need to go through all the pain which Mansoor put her through only because her mother, family and the society expect just that from her.

1

Kukoo seemed to be doing well without Khurram except for the candlelight dinner scene in which it looked like she was finding it hard to combat loneliness. Kukoo has however learned her lesson well and she also wants Laila to know what is good for her without enduring the kind of pain which Laila had to endure. Kukoo accepts that she wouldn’t want Laila to make the same mistakes she made…“aik mard se jaan churanay ke liye dusre ka khanda mat dhoondo, talash krna hai tu apne aap ko karo…mujh se hi kuch seekh lo”. The relationship between Mrs. Khan, Kukoo and Laila has to be one of the most beautiful aspects of this play. We don’t get to see women looking out for each other in Pakistani dramas the way these three do.

Tonight’s episode was more of an extension of the last one; it focused on the repercussions of Laila’s decision. Laila has her mind made up and she is not willing to give her relationship with Mansoor another chance. Kukoo has moved on as well. Will Laila be able to stay strong considering how much opposition she has to face? Will she find her own pehchan or will she have no choice but to rely on another man? Bee Gul’s script is powerful; many writers might not even venture into writing something that maybe seen as a “threat” to the status quo that exists in our society! Khalid Ahmed’s direction has been superb throughout; the play has a very artistic feel to it. All the actors have done a commendable job but Iffat Rahim and Sohail Sameer in particular have totally won me over. I actually missed watching Mansoor on screen tonight.

Do share your thoughts about tonight’s episode.

Pehchan – Episode 16

0

“Tum bachi nahi ho, shadi shuda ho, aik beti ki maa ho…stop dreaming!”  I love the way this drama gives its viewers a chance to rethink all the clichés and double-standards that exist in our society. Once a girl gets married, she is supposed to dedicate her life to making her marriage work, nothing else in the world matters. The second a girl gets married she should stop dreaming because that is the start of practical life; stop dreaming about being happy…Is that really fair or right? Bee Gul’s script forces you to question all the preconceived notions about married men, women and marriage in general. Is marriage just a social obligation or more than that? Is a woman only a wife and a mother after marriage or does she have a pehchan of her own too? And if a woman loses her pehchan as an individual after marriage why doesn’t the same hold true for the man as well? Why does the society expect the woman to deliver and the man is not questioned because as long as he provides for his wife and kids he can get away with everything. Pehchan rejects all the stereotypes which we have been seeing in our dramas for a very long time now. It is refreshing in its own unique way. Laila has stopped looking for excuses for Mansoor’s less than attentive behavior, she knows that there is no point in hoping that one day things will change for good and she most certainly is done with putting up a show for her mother.

“Jis rastay pe tum chal rahi ho, us rastay pe chalnay wali aurat ko hamare masharay mei jis naam se pukara jata hai, janti ho?…..Buhat achi tarah janti hun, magar ap jaise mard ko kis naam se pukara jaye yeh nahi janti!!”…so true and so ironic! They are so many names for women who cheat on their husbands, who fail as wives because our society loves to label and judge women but what do you call a husband who cheats on his wife and who fails to make her happy? Although this episode like all the previous ones was loaded with powerful dialogues that cast a spell on you; the sort of conversations that stay with you long after you have heard them but my favorite scene in tonight’s episode was the final confrontation between Mansoor and Laila. Laila may think that it is her financial independence that has given her the courage to stand up to Mansoor but something tells me that it is not just that. There are many financially independent women like Kukoo who think they are incomplete without a man but Laila knows that she has an identity of her own, which she can only safeguard if she goes away from Mansoor. Laila also knows that she gave this relationship her best but Mansoor failed as a husband; he failed to give her the love she deserved. Laila would have happily let her husband be her new pehchan had he given her enough love to earn that status. Men do not get respect, love and everything else that comes with a marriage simply by entering into nikkah with women, they also need to work hard to earn all that. Mansoor warns Laila again and again that without his pannah Laila is vulnerable and weak but Laila knows better. Sohail Sameer has outdone himself as Mansoor, he has been brilliant throughout the play. Whoever selected him for this role deserves special appreciation.

“Tum buhat masboot ho Kukoo, tum ne mujh jaise admi ka bhoj saha hai…Mansoor Jaise admi ka stress saha hai!” Khurram and Kukoo both failed each other and they decided to be honest about it when they parted ways. Khurram explained his relationship with Kukoo brilliantly. He was always like a spoiled child and Kukoo like his mother, maybe that is the reason why he never wanted a child of his own! A child does not know that he has duties too but he only expects the mother to be there for him whenever he needs her. Similarly Khurram forgot that this marriage was a two way road, he did not realize that one day Kukoo may get very tired of all this and turn to someone else for the kind of love Khurram never gave her. Khurram always got what he wanted from his relationship from Kukoo but he never gave much consideration to Kukoo’s wishes. He never even tried to understand her. He knew what she wanted but his own happiness was much more important to him. Khurram is not perfect in any way at all but at least he was man enough to admit his mistakes and he forgave his wife for what she did. Mansoor on the other hand still thinks that he did nothing wrong. Kukoo felt liberated after Khurram left, it looked like she was eager to move on.

Kukoo and Laila both have an opportunity to start afresh; how are they going to make use of this opportunity, remains to be seen. Will they be able to find their pehchan without a man? Will Laila be able to stick to her decision? I can’t wait to find out. Pehchan has been a masterpiece till now, it is refreshing, enlightening and very well executed. Bee Gul and Khalid Ahmed make a superb team, I hope we will be seeing more plays from them in the future too.
