Bay Emaan Mohabbat- The end!

25 episodes and a few time slot changes later, Bay Emaan Mohabbat came to an end. ARY’s tradition of stretching a story beyond it’s expiration date continues and I fail to understand why they are committed to prolonging stories when the end result is nothing but a lack on interest from the audience. This drama was nothing exceptional by any means but the first few episodes had a somewhat engaging storyline. The pacing was fairly steady until somewhere midway, there seemed to be an absolute loss of focus.

There wasn’t much of a story to begin with but seeing the likes of Nauman Ejaz, Samiya Mumtaz and Saba Qamar was a enough of a draw. However, with actors signing up for multiple projects it’s unrealistic to expect every project will be worth the time. Acting wise, Samiya Mumtaz was an excellent choice as a blind woman, Saba Qamar added a spark to her role and Nauman Ejaz has perfected the character of an unfaithful husband. The story had potential- it was supposed to be the story of desires and how far people go to achieve them. There could, rather should have been a very strong moral at the end- but instead, the writer Amir Raza ended up sensationalizing everything that’s wrong with our society.

Here’s why: Dania, a middle-class girl who dreams big is engaged to a simpleton Naeem- a man she can’t stand since she thinks she deserves much better. She’s having an affair with her best friend’s fiance, Babar- a man who’s just using her as a time-pass since he’s too much of a coward to stand up for himself. Dania dumps Naeem for Babar thinking Babar will marry her. But Babar ditches her and she’s left devastated. She tries to pick up the pieces of her broken heart and finds comfort in the arms of her boss- Nabeel. Nabeel is a frustrated man married to a blind woman. But before you start feeling sorry for him since he’s a whipped husband, he has a history. He married Maria to escape a lower middle class lifestyle and traded his soul for money. But seeing that his wife is not only blind, but also infertile and a complete control freak, Nabeel tries to compensate for his sorrow by leading a parallel life. Dania isn’t the first woman he has been involved with but she ends up being his last. The two of them secretly marry and when Maria finds out, she vows to destroy him. She files a case against him and has him arrested but Dania pleads for his freedom and Maria agrees in exchange for her to disappear. Maria, who is cheated upon by her husband, is suffering not just from a disability but also the earth-shattering reality that she can never conceive is shown in a negative light- she’s not the victim here! Instead, poor Nabeel and Dania are the ones we are expected to feel sorry for. Everyone from Maria’s caretaker uncle, to her trusted lawyer, her nanny who raised her blame her for being irrational and depriving Nabeel from becoming a father- a right he is entitled to even if it means agreeing to his second marriage. The ending was almost comical- it was an extremely forced attempt to ensure everyone has a super happy ending. Maria ends up accepting Nabeel and Dania and naming their son as the heir to all her wealth; all of them live under the same roof and Dania now refers to Maria as Api and Maria is more than thrilled playing mommy to Dania and Nabeel’s son and has very happily handed Nabeel over to Dania.

So basically, the moral of the story is that if a man cheats on his wife, his wife has no reason to get upset, instead she’s expected to openly accept his decision. If a woman is barren, she should herself hand her husband over to another woman since men have a stronger urge to have children and a woman’s needs are secondary. If a woman thinks too much of herself, she has every right to do whatever it takes to ensure she gets what she wants. Dania and Nabeel both wronged their partners but it didn’t matter- they were the lead and they had to end up together. How do the writers come up with such twisted stories and have the nerve to justify them with happy endings? I’ve got to say, the writers don’t disappoint on one front- they constantly do a one-up by coming up with even more outrageous stories!

Bay Emaan Mohabbat- Episode 9 Review

th

The recent episode of Bay Emaan Mohabbat continued to progress at a steady pace. Shah Sahab (Naeem’s co-worker) informed him that he had spotted Dania with a man. When Babar and Sobia came by to visit Dania’s father at the hospital, Shah Sahab recognized him immediately. Even though he told Naeem about Babar, Naeem was reluctant to believe that Dania was with another man. On the contrary, Naeem was feeling confident that Dania and him were closer than ever before since Qazi Sahab’s illness. I was quite surprized to see that Shah Sahab was genuinely concerned about Naeem and looks out for him. He even went to Nabeel and told him about the investigation being spear-headed by Qutub and asked him to use his influence to call it off. Naeem’s too gullible to fend for himself and it’s nice to know that someone has his back. At least for now.

Dania confided in her mother that she felt Naeem was somehow involved with the incident that caused her father to suffer a heart attack. When Naeem came by to visit, she overheard part of the conversation and warned Naeem that he will have to face the consequences if he was involved in this mess. Naeem allows Dania to treat him like a doormat and ignores her derogatory attitude towards him. She is completely repulsed by his presence and makes no effort to camouflage her feelings. He’s blinded by her aura and is content knowing that she’s his.

Babar came by to visit Dania’s father but I find it hard to believe he was sincere. He’s a coward and an opportunist and he’s certainly not the kind of a guy who a girl can count on. Dania is starting to show signs of doubting his intentions but she’s not ready to let go of him completely- not just yet. She announced her desire to call off her engagement and he advised her against it- he knows that the minute she’s single, she’ll be harassing him to break off his engagement with Sobia and even though he can’t stand Sobia, he doesn’t have the guts to get out of an engagement his family arranged.

Nabeel is still preoccupied with Sumbul’s disappearance and the mysterious circumstances surrounding her exit. Maria’s attempts to divert his thoughts seem futile. As if they didn’t have enough problems already, their doctor confirms Maria’s greatest fear- she can’t conceive. Maria is spiraling downwards in self-pity- she wants a child- not just for herself but for Nabeel. She’s afraid of losing Nabeel and feels that if they were to have a child, she could somehow ensure that he remains with her- if only relationships worked that way!

After 9 episodes, I’m really eager to have Dania and Nabeel cross paths. They have exceptional on-screen chemistry and I’m sure we’ll see nothing short of fireworks. Did you like today’s episode? Do you think this serial has enough substance to keep you hooked till the end?

Bay Emaan Mohabbat- Episode 8 Review

While Dania and Babar are out on a date- their very first outing, things are heating up at Qazi Saheb’s (Dania’s father) office. A new officer is reviewing all the paperwork and it has made everyone rather alert. Qazi Saheb confides in Naeem that he’s a little perturbed but Naeem reassures him that he’s got nothing to worry about. The officer summons Qazi Saheb and accuses him of teaming up with his son-in-law and approving illegal projects in exchange for financial gain. He threatens him with a detailed inquiry and Qazi Saheb suffers a heart attack. Naeem rushes him to the hospital and Dania’s mother asks him to get Dania from Sobia’s house. Upon reaching there, he finds out Dania never came there. He spots Naeem on the bike with a woman but doesn’t see who she is. Unfortunately, his colleague notices Dania with Babar. Finally Naeem finds Dania at her place and she asks him to take her to see her father.

At the hospital, Dania tells Naeem not to let her parents know that she wasn’t at Sobia’s house. Naeem, who is completely smitten by Dania agrees to her without question and tells her he will spend the rest of his life agreeing to everything she says. Dania’s disgust at Naeem is apparent and her apology seems insincere too. She’s grateful to him for saving her father’s life but she can’t stand his presence. Babar was being his usual chichora self and it made me wonder- what exactly does she see in a guy like him who’s not only cheating on his fiancée, but he’s clearly just enjoying himself with Dania and has no real intentions of taking a stand for her.

Maria confronted Nabeel about Sumbal’s accusations- Nabeel insisted that someone is trying to frame him and destroy his life. Maria comforted him and told him that she still trusted him. I really like Samiya Mumtaz in this role- it’s such a refreshing change to see her play the character of a strong woman with a scheming mind. As they say- all’s fair in love and war. Nabeel is still trying to get in touch with Sumbul and find out what really happened. He’s frustrated with the way she left and especially since she escalated the complaint to Maria. He has tried very hard to maintain his image as a devoted husband and he wouldn’t want anyone to hamper it- least of all another woman!

I wonder if Sobia will press Dania for where she went after knowing she used her as an alibi. I actually feel really sorry for both Naeem and Sobia- they are so completely in awe of their respective significant others and are blind to their flaws. With Qazi Saheb’s deteriorating health, Dania may be in a situation where her parents pressurize her into a quick Nikah for their satisfaction. Knowing Dania, she won’t refuse her parents outright, she will probably try and prolong it hoping by then Babar will fess up and ask for her hand in marriage- although my instincts tell me Babar is not to be trusted!

What are your thoughts about this episode? What do you foresee happening in the next episode(s)?

In the previous episode, Maria had hired a private investigator to spy on Nabeel. He had found out that Sumbul was an opportunist who had previously worked her way up in a similar fashion by charming her bosses. After getting hold of her photographs with her ex-boyfriend, he blackmailed Sumbul into meeting him. When Sumbul saw him, she realized he was posing as Nabeel’s chauffeur all this time. At first she tried to play tough but once he threatened he was capable of murder, Sumbul didn’t take any chances. She succumbed to his demands of taking a payout in exchange for leaving town, giving up her sim card so she would not be contactable and wrote her resignation letter accusing Nabeel of workplace harassment. Well played, Maria. This woman knows how to keep her man in line despite her handicap! I like the actor playing the role of the PI- he’s such a natural, it’s almost as if he does it for a living! Samiya Mumtaz is absolutely brilliant as the blind wife who wouldn’t allow her husband to get away without a fight.

mar

Dania is getting anxious over her secret affair with Babar and deep down knows he will never take a stand for her. Yet, she continues seeing him, hoping for some sort of a miracle since she’s so frustrated with her engagement to Naeem. She feels guilty for deceiving Sobia and hates lying to her mother. In fact a part of her even feels bad for Naeem- she isn’t entirely evil but her desires for happiness and a better life overpower all other feelings. Saba Qamar’s character is very similar to that in Maat with the exception that she does seem to have a hint of a heart!

sq

Babar is taking full advantage of her vulnerability and is exploiting her for his own interests. I seriously doubt his sincerity- he’s miserable with his engagement to Sobia but lacks the guts to break it off and face the music. He would rather continue leading Dania on as she’s willing to believe in him. Agha Ali is quickly becoming typecast as a frustrated lover who never gets a break.

b

Nabeel was shocked at Sumbul’s sudden change of heart and quick disappearance. He managed to trace the number of her roommate Saba and went to ask her if she knew of her whereabouts. Saba clearly wants no part of this mess and subtly mocked him for being stupid enough to fall for someone like Sumbul- the lady was nothing but a social climber. Nabeel feels incomplete and miserable being married to someone like Maria who is handicapped yet his conscience reminds him that he opted for a get-rich-quick route by marrying her. He knows only too well that the downside to leaving Maria would be to return to his old lifestyle- where he worked hard to earn a living and still barely made ends meet. He will have to keep up the devoted husband act so he can enjoy the luxuries that he acquired through this well-planned reunion. Nauman Ejaz has nailed this role as Nabeel although I wish he would quit stammering ever so often.

The preview for the next episode seems very interesting- I am eagerly looking forward to next week’s episode. Have you watched this episode? What are your thoughts?

Bay Emaan Mohabbat- Episode 19 to 22 Review

Four episodes have elapsed and we have another time change? ARYs lack of faith is disturbing. But then again, this drama has been going downhill for quite some time. I think the biggest dilemma is a lack of focus, a mediocre storyline and poor vision. Trying to throw in suspense elements hasn’t really helped much since we all pretty much know where things are headed.

Dania has succeeded in luring Nabeel into a marriage- there were a few hiccups along the way but the inevitable wedding took place. Nabeel gifted her a house for a wedding and ironically the house cost him his life’s worth of savings! Dania is over-the-moon initially being a homeowner and marrying the man of her new-found dreams but soon her bubble bursts when she is faced with the reality that Nabeel will only be a part-time husband and that too in secrecy. Maria is back and pulling the strings as she does best. She’s torn over the news that she can’t conceive and is suffocating Nabeel in the process.

The long dialogues between Dania’s parents serve no real purpose. There was a failed attempt at trying to get our pulse racing when Nabeel was trying to uncover the mystery behind who was keeping tabs on him and Dania. But just like that, he managed to quickly turn the tables in his favour and now the Private Investigator has sworn allegiance to Nabeel. Or so it seems for the mo. Maria’s bossy attitude continues and is no longer restricted to the home. She is now pushing herself into the workplace trying to keep track of every breath he takes. If only chocking your better half could guarantee faithfulness…

Dania is trying to throw tantrums of her own- Kyun Nabeel? Aaj ki raat rukh jao… Umm, okay, so didn’t she know what she was getting herself into? It surprises me that the characters suffer from short-term memory loss and forget their association with one another. Babar and Naeem have completely disappeared from the scene- Naeem tried to blackmail Dania but that backfired and he was tossed out of his job; Babar feigned an apology which fell flat. This is now simply the story of a man caught between two wives doing the juggling act as best as he can.

My issue really is with the number of episodes. All of this could’ve easily been wrapped up in 15 episodes. Had that happened, we may even have had moments of paying attention. But 22 episodes later, any efforts at redemption seem highly unlikely. Are my faithful four still on-board or have you stumbled off?

I’m beginning to think that Dania is schizophrenic. How else can she justify her behaviour and her repeated affirmations that she cares about her parents izzat? Mere apney gharwaley mujhpe aetebaar nahin karte– umm, not very long ago, she was having an affair with her best friend’s mangaitar– Babar! I understand that somewhere along the lines, we may lose track of the storyline since it tends to drag on endlessly but I doubt we can forget what started this whole mess.

After talking down to her and destroying her self-respect, Nabeel finally succumbs to izhaar-e-mohabbat and the two of them reconcile. But just as the lovebirds are planning their future, Naeem informs Dania that Nabeel was the one who was responsible for her father’s condition. But thankfully, there was no misunderstanding as Dania immediately sorted it out with Nabeel and admitted that even if he was at fault, she’s just too involved with him to care- hmm, so much for putting family first.

The private investigator is back in the scene- he approached Naeem with a proposition. Naeem is only too eager to help since he has a score to settle with Dania Ji. Nabeel senses that he is being followed and also discovers the CD recorded with a conversation that took place between him and Sumbul. He gets worked up and asks for his office to be tapped so he can monitor everyone’s phone calls, movement, etc.

Dania does what she does best- being pushy to the point of making men run far, far away. She did it with Babar and now she’s putting Nabeel in the same spot. Why can’t they show women as positive role models? Yes, she made a blunder by trusting Babar, but she should have redeemed herself by focusing on building a life for herself instead of rushing into the arms of the next man she found.

Dania’s parents are completely helpless when it comes to reasoning with their daughter. They try to make her realize that even if Nabeel ends up marrying her, he will not be too keen on publicizing the marriage which will make things very difficult for Dania. But Dania is desperate to get married and she is seemingly upset when Nabeel voices his concern. However, he reassures her parents that he will accept their demands- whatever they may be! Dania always dreamed of riches and it seems like her dreams are about to come true- unless Maria returns and wreaks havoc.

18 episodes have gone by and at this rate, I see another 10 episodes before the story comes to an abrupt end. I don’t know why actors like Noman Ejaz and Saba Qamar agreed to taking up this drama- they can do so much better! I know that the budget was minimal but seriously, couldn’t Saba Qamar at least change outfits once every episode if not more frequently? I’m sick of seeing her in the same clothes since the past 3 episodes now- it makes me think the scenes never end! Are you still watching? Thoughts?

For reasons unbeknownst to me, ARY has decided to change the timings of this serial- it will now air on Fridays at 7pm. As if I didn’t have enough to watch on Friday already! One of the main reasons I tuned in was the fact that it aired on Sundays when hardly anything else was on. Episode 16 and I was conditioned to being in a stupor until surprise, surprise, Naeem Bau is back- and this time- with a vengeance. Insaan jab apni nazron se girta hai toh uski jalan uska dukh kya hota hai… Seeing Dania getting into Nabeel’s car, our sleuth Naeem is able to deduce that Dania ne bara lamba haath maara hai… Healing is never easy especially when the relationship ended before it could actually take off. Naeem worshiped Dania- she was way out of his league and that felt like an achievement. Being dumped by her broke his heart but also opened his eyes to the reality that he would never have his happily ever after with her. Which is why seeing her with Nabeel triggered the psycho button and he’s no longer the silent stalker but a very vocal one.

Nabeel is giving her mixed signals- he takes one step forward and two steps backwards and this confuses Dania. The two of them continue growing closer but Nabeel panics when he senses Dania wanting more and puts her in her place. His quick retracting is out of fear of losing everything he worked so hard to gain. Nabeel’s life is as bland as can be- he’s clearly miserable and what is the point of having all that money if you can’t enjoy it with someone? His wife, though she tries her best to keep him company has her limitations but this is the path he chose for himself. He’s well aware that he’s aging and doesn’t like being referred to as old. Dania is clearly on a rebound- she just wants to get away from her horrible situation of living next door to Babar and Sobia and move on with her life. Dania thinks she can have any man she wants but the truth is, she’s plain stupid. She’s conceited and shallow and doesn’t realize she can get herself into some real trouble. She’s an easy target for any man wishing to exploit her since she’s so desperate and it shows. And Nabeel can’t get her out of his head- pretty clear where this is headed.

I can’t help but wonder, how many people are actually tuning into this drama that it deserves to air on a Friday??? Except me and my faithful four, that is… Have your say- were you expecting Naeem to show his true colors?

Some people never learn and Dania happens to be one such person. She continues throwing herself a pity party as if she was the victim and Sobia was the one who brought this upon her. The episodes are getting really slow and it’s frustrating to sit through them and not really have the story move forward. I’ve noticed that there are many dramas that would do well if they were wrapped up in under 20 episodes but I’m beginning to think that no one’s interested in what the audience wants!

After last week’s encounter with Babar, I had hoped Dania would have the courage to move on but it seems she’s into a spiraling downward decline. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned in love but I get the feeling this isn’t even about Babar anymore- she’s just unable to accept the reality that Sobia is married to him. Her contempt for Sobia is overshadowing everything else. And during this time of self exploration, she develops a close connection with Nabeel. Nabeel is your classic exploiter- he senses an opportunity and ceases it. Initially tough on Dania, he has taken a 360 degree turn and has not only starting appreciating her, he has also managed to get her to trust him. By playing her saviour when she suffers a nervous breakdown, he manages to get close to her. So much so, that despite the obvious discomfort she felt when he brought her home, she ended up pouring her heart out to him over the phone. Does this woman not realize that she’s an easy target for any man willing to take advantage? Dania was clearly impressed by his lavish home but made a run for it when she sensed danger. I would hate to see Nabeel take advantage of her while she’s trying to sort her life but sadly, she is responsible for her misery.

Dania’s mom tries to get her daughter to confide in her but the disconnect is pretty obvious. I have to wonder, didn’t her mother realize what a spoilt brat she is early on? Sometimes her concern seems genuine, at other times, it’s almost as if she herself has given up on her only child. I never had an extraordinary expectations from this drama- I started watching it since I liked the cast, namely Noman Ejaz but 15 episodes have elapsed and I do wish they’d get on with it and have a point too. What did you think ladies- you know who you are!!!

Babar continued ignoring Dania thinking she would get the message but the tigress she is, she went to his home to confront him. His father walked in on them and asked Dania very politely to leave the scene. It was a very neighbourly act instead of accusing her and defaming him, he blamed his own son knowing how incompetent he is. After threatening to kick him out, with the help of his mother’s intervention, Babar was allowed to stay on the condition that he will be married off within a week. Pasand na pasand unki hoti hai jo khud kuch kamaatey hein– in a nutshell, this happens to be a reality of life. Someone who is entirely dependent on others for their day to day needs, cannot choose how they want to live their lives; on the contrary, they are bound by those who provide for them.

I liked how Sobia, despite knowing that her best friend had betrayed her, didn’t want anyone finding out what transpired and invited Dania to her wedding. It was very big of her and Dania should be grateful for a friend like Sobia. Though a part of her felt remorse, Dania was mostly battling with the realization- Woh Sobia jo mujhse har cheez mein peechay theh aaj woh mujhse baazi legayi! Dania’s agony was a repercussion of her own selfish actions and instead of accepting her mistake, she continues questioning how Babar can settle for someone like Sobia. Babar had the nerve to come over to drop off his wedding invitation and on top of that- he actually gave Dania the “I’ll always be there if you need me” line. I was almost sure Dania would break a pot on his head but she just walked away holding her head high- Mujh mein ghalti karney ka hausla toh hai aur uska saamna karna ka bhi.

Es6U7

Dania’s lack of competency at work frustrates Nabeel who points it out to her on more than one occasion. Her personal grievances are affecting her work-life but Nabeel seems to be warming up to her. Maria is traveling which will give Nabeel some much needed space- will this be the golden opportunity to seduce Dania? Will Dania ever get over Babar or will she try and win him back from Sobia. Dania’s competitive streak could end up causing her more harm than she could have ever imagined.

The story is engaging but I think all this could have been summarized in a mere 8 episodes instead of 14. At this rate, I can foresee the drama stretching to over 25 episodes which inevitably makes it boring. Let’s see how they wrap it up. My fellow four watchers, what do you have to say about today’s episode?

The drama has finally started to move forward- better late than never I suppose! Dania broke off her engagement with Naeem- she used her father’s illness as an excuse but her parents have started realizing that he probably wasn’t what they had thought. Naeem in turn goes and blurts out to Sobia about Baber and Dania’s affair. Babar hates being cornered and has finally started showing his true colors- he was never man enough to marry Dania but he liked spending time with her- she was just the sort of distraction he needed in his life. Men like Baber are too afraid of taking a stand for themselves since they are entirely dependent on their family for support. Dania was confident that Baber loved her but she was in for a rude awakening.

Sobia, though devastated, took it in her stride with dignity- she is trapped and knows that Baber doesn’t have the guts to call off the engagement and even though he mistreats her, he’s the only man she has ever loved. It’s hard sometimes when families arrange marriages ahead of time- young girls grow up fantasizing about their cousins as their perfect soul mates and when reality takes over, they are left helplessly lost and confused. Baber knows his father would sooner disown him than call off his engagement with Sobia and he sees no way out which is what drew him towards staring an affair with Dania. But seeing Dania dumping Naeem made him cautious since he knew Dania would try and force him into a commitment.

EVizA

With Qazi Saheb’s paralysis, Dania has to start seeking employment opportunities to support her family. She drops off her resume at Nabeel’s work and runs into him. No sparks fly since she’s not exactly up for small talk and Nabeel doesn’t seem too impressed by her either. Maria, however, is wary of hiring a typical social climber and would rather take a chance on a newbie like Dania than have another seasoned secretary try and seduce Nabeel. Maria thinks that by keeping women at bay, she is safeguarding her marriage but little does she know, Nabeel isn’t devoted to her- he is devoted to her money! Maria continues pressing Nabeel to agree to adoption but he flatly refuses saying he doesn’t want any children except his own.

Now that Dania will be hired as Nabeel’s PA, will she turn to him on a rebound or will she play hard to get? Dania always wanted a comfortable life and Nabeel could be her ticket to riches. Will she let Baber off the hook for deceiving her? This is where it starts to get interesting. Looking forward to next week.

Bay Emaan Mohabbat

Qazi Saheb comes home upset after being asked to go on an indefinite leave and suffers from paralysis. Babar’s mother asks him to go and check up on them since there is no man in their house. While Babar is consoling Dania, Naeem walks in and gets frustrated seeing their coziness. Dania reacts by tossing away her engagement ring. Dania genuinely cares for her parents but it’s only too obvious that she’s using this as an excuse to free herself from Naeem. Babar selfishly tries to convince Dania to cool down- he doesn’t want to be in a situation where he will feel compelled to marry Dania.

Sobia feels confused about Babar being with Dania but he covers up saying he was there on behalf of her. Babar continues treating Sobia like dirt and Sobia can’t do anything to change his attitude. People like Sobia allow their partners to abuse them because they are too weak to walk away or put their foot down. Naeem is the male equivalent of Sobia and he too is too weak to let go or voice his true feelings but it hurts him deeply when Dania scorns him and humiliates him publicly.

Although Dania’s mother was upset with Dania for her rudeness, a conversation with a well-wisher who lets on that Naeem is responsible for Qazi Sahab’s condition makes her rethink Dania’s attitude. Dania’s parents had prematurely arranged her engagement since they wanted to secure her future. Many parents rush through such decisions out of a sense of urgency fearing their incapacity to provide their daughters with a decent dowry.

Nabeel is completely against adopting a child but Maria feels that a child will brighten up her life. She has made him a 50% business partner since she trusts him blindly- not like she has a choice! Maria and Nabeel’s story seems somewhat stagnant as there is nothing new going on with them. Since Nabeel is looking for a PA and Dania needs to support her family now that her father is paralyzed, looks like we will finally get to see the two of them in the same frame.

The drama is still interesting but I really wish they would pick up the pace as we haven’t seen the story moving forward as much as it should. Did you watch today’s episode? What did you think about it?

Naeem’s insecurities are taking their toll and he finally mustered the courage to confront Dania. She knows he’s smitten by her and uses it to her full advantage. She casually accepted that she was in fact with Babar but that was only since they wanted to surprise Sobia. After Shah Ji’s persistence, he called Sobia and asked her to meet him. But Dania found out and gave him a piece of her mind.

Sobia and Naeem are very much alike- they are both naive and blindly honour their relations. Despite Dania’s rudeness, Sobia continues loving her like a sister and wants only the best for her. She seems genuinely concerned for Dania even more now that Dania has expressed her interests in another man. If nothing else, Dania should at least feel rotten about how she’s abusing Sobia’s trust. Babar once again proved his intentions are anything but noble- even under such insinuating circumstances, he continues trying to string Dania along without any word of a commitment. For her sake, I hope Dania sees him for the scumbag he is and dumps him before he dumps her. Babar seems laid back but in reality, he is extremely calculated and plans things according to his advantage. He knows the repercussions of breaking off his engagement to Sobia and that’s not a chance he’s willing to take.

EIVY9

Dania tries to get her father to confide in her- she’s desperate to find a reason to call off her engagement with Naeem. But her father trusts Naeem and loves him like a son and wouldn’t dream of it. At the office, Shah Ji has managed to pull some strings with the help of Nabeel and called off the inquiry but for it to take effect, Qazi Sahab would need to leave too. Qazi Sahab is seemingly upset since his life’s savings depend upon his pension and retirement fund. His financial situation is a real worry for him and also the reason why he chose Naeem as Dania’s partner.

Maria tells Nabeel that she wants to adopt a child but Nabeel isn’t even remotely interested. Nabeel’s marriage to Maria was for his own personal gain. He didn’t realize he would be in it for the long haul but with each passing day, it’s becoming harder for him to keep up with the pretenses. Maria is content that Nabeel remains with her- and that’s reason enough for her to remain happy.

Next week’s preview shows Dania dumping Naeem and I think this will pave the way for Dania to finally see through Babar and his lack of support. Things aren’t moving fast enough for me- I really want it to get to the point where Nabeel and Dania meet each other. Did you watch today’s episode?

Bay Emaan Mohabbat- Episode 1 to 6 Review

bem

A few of our readers insisted on expanding our drama review section. So I’ll be reviewing the drama Bay Emaan Mohabbat going forward. Written by Amir Raza and directed by Kashif Nisar and Sohail Irfan, the drama airs every Sunday on ARY Digital. We’re six weeks into the drama already and till now we’ve established three main tracks. The first revolves around Dania (Saba Qamar) who’s engaged to a man she loathes- Naeem (Adnan Shah Tipu). Dania belongs to a middle class background but dreams of living a luxurious life. Naeem is a simpleton who’s biggest achievement was getting engaged to Dania. He’s a lowly clerk in a government office and Dania hates everything about him. She constantly expresses her dissatisfaction to her mother (Laila Zuberi) but her mother tries to make her understand that she too had to settle for a man like her father since she belonged to a middle class family and one of the main struggles was finding a suitable spouse.

Despite her engagement, Dania is having an affair with her next-door neighbour Babar (Agha Ali). Babar is a frustrated, good-for-nothing guy who was coerced into getting engaged to his older cousin, Sobia (Uzma Hassan). Sobia happens to be Dania’s best friend and confides every little intimate detail to her. Dania uses the information to her advantage to continue her affair with Babar. Babar scoffs at Sobia every chance he gets, in an attempt to make her hate him so she would call of the engagement since he doesn’t have the guts to do so.

The final track is that of Maria (Samiya Mumtaz)- a blind lady who has inherited her father’s enormous wealth. She is married to an opportunist, Nabeel (Nauman Ejaz) who runs her business for her. They have been married a long time but are childless. Nabeel is cheating on Maria with his co-worker who is a social climber. Maria suspects her husband is unfaithful and has hired a private detective to snoop around.

In the recent episode, Naeem has secured a part-time evening job at Nabeel’s organization so this is probably how their lives will intertwine in the coming episodes. Bay Emaan Mohabbat is a simple story about desires and the outcomes of those desires. So far, it’s progressing at a steady pace and although there are no real WOW factors, it’s engaging nonetheless. To put it simply- Love, Life, Lahore!

Have you been watching Bay Emaan Mohabbat? What character do you like/ dislike? Do you think you’ll continue watching it till the end?

Bata Takes Down Poster After Social Media Backlash

In the era of social media, the more easy it is to make things viral, the more difficult it is to be politically, socially and morally correct all the time. Pakistan’s famous shoe store chain Bata came under hot waters a couple of days back by putting up this poster giving a very wrong message; womaniser and comfortable with it

Bata Takes Down Poster After Social Media Backlash

It was understandably not received well and the social media came alive with people bashing this idea left, right and centre:

Bata Takes Down Poster After Social Media Backlash Bata Takes Down Poster After Social Media Backlash Bata Takes Down Poster After Social Media Backlash Bata Takes Down Poster After Social Media Backlash Bata Takes Down Poster After Social Media Backlash Bata Takes Down Poster After Social Media Backlash

To their credit, Bata has taken down the poster and issued a sincere apology;

Bata Takes Down Poster After Social Media Backlash

Now that was one thoughtful move. Regardless of how nobody from the marketing at Bata realised what it will mean to promote a man as a womaniser and comfortable with it, they promptly took notice of public opinion and acted accordingly. This is certainly considerate of them and has helped in damage control.

Bashar Momin Episode 3 & 4 – Changing for the better?

0

I had completely given up on this show by the time I saw the 3rd episode. The whole episode was filled with the good and evil sister-in-law drama. Saira could not stand Adil giving so much attention to Rudaba, and she created a huge drama to get attention. She thought that Rudaba had complained to Adil about her attitude when the poor girl had done no such thing.

After that, Saira openly showed her dislike for Rudaba and made her feel like a stranger in the house. But not in front ofAdil of course, in his presence she was at the best of her behavior. The way she taunted Rudaba about Buland in front of her sister and brother was simply pathetic. This track was dragged to the limit and by the end of it; I had completely lost interest in the show.

Tayabba and her desperation for marriage is getting on my nerves by each passing episode. How desperate can a person get? It is not the end of the world if your engagement breaks. She kept on whining about how unfair life is and kept on blaming her brother’s illegal work and bad reputation for her broken engagement. This track is seriously getting very repetitive. The crying and whining continued in the 4th episode too, and it was simply frustrating to watch Tayabba’s scenes.

However, the fourth episode managed to capture my interest, and now I have some hope for the show. Why was the episode worth watching? The answer is simple: Faysal Qureshi. I was disappointed with his loud and rash character; all the pointless screaming simply made my ears rings. But I had forgotten how well Faysal can emote through his eyes, and that romance and Faysal Qureshi are a perfect combination.

We saw the start of the attraction phase between Bashar and Rudaba. Rudaba is scared out of her wits when she is near Bashar, but she still manages to challenge him even though she never means to. He was amused by the ‘monster’comment, and simply shocked by the detailed and honest comment about his behavior and character. The best part about his eyes is that they can emote both anger and softness. We saw the soft look when he was admiring her and the angry look when he was furious with her.

Rudaba was staying at Bashar’s house because Adil and Saira had to go abroad for some urgent business work. Bashar never gave a second glance or thought to Rudaba, and treated her rudely (that’s normal behavior for Bashar). For him, she was no more than Parizey’s care taker, but with each encounter, his opinion about her changed. She disobeyed him and took Parizey in the rain. That was the first time anybody disobeyed him so openly and calling him furious would be an understatement. He unleashed his wrath on Rudaba and the poor girl simply fainted. Yes, FAINTED! I was surprised and a bit amused by her fainting spell.

The look on Bashar’s face when Rudaba fainted was priceless! It was obvious that he felt guilty for his behavior (a first for someone like Bashar), and he had never expected her to faint all of a sudden. For the first time, we saw Bashar  acting in a normal way as he gently tried to wake Rudaba. It was funny to see Bashar speak so softly and act in such a gentle way! Their next encounter in Tayabba’s bedroom was also pretty amusing. Faysal’s eyes did all the work in this scene.

Bashar has not realized that he is attracted to Rudaba, but he will soon. Judging from the preview for the next episode, he would be speechless after he sees Rudaba all dressed up and this would make him think about her.

Another highlight of the latest episode is that Buland is officially back. Buland and Rudaba’s  first encounter was pretty filmy, there was no electricity plus there was rain. Rudaba was standing outside the house with candles in her hand and Buland was under the umbrella. The expressions of both the actors were perfect. But then if someone asks me who is a better romantic hero; Faysal Qureshi or Sami Khan, then my answer would be Faysal. Ushnah Shah has good chemistry with Faysal, now let’s see how her chemistry with Sami turns to be!

I would recommend you to watch this episode, its better than the previous ones!

Till Next Week!

Bashar Momin Episode 2 – Drama and Suspense?

0

Another episode has passed and most of us are still trying to find out what the hype was all about. True, the budget and production values are impressive, but at the end of the day what matters is the content shown. I would rate the first two episodes as average; they concentrated more on character development in the first episode and paid less attention to the story, and now in the second episode they tried to create more drama and suspense.

Did they succeed? Well, not really! The whole drama created around Salman and Tayabba’s broken engagement was dragged to the limit. Mostly, they were trying to give more insight into Bashar Momin’s character through this forced drama. After watching the drama, we know a few things about Bashar. First of all, he adores his sisters and can go to any extent for their happiness. Second, he thinks money is above everything, it can buy anything (even a groom for his sister). Third, what happens to those who say no to him. We were all a bit shocked to see Bashar Momin acting so loud in the first episode, we expected him to be the sophisticated and charming businessman. The writer has experimented with his character, and we see a rich billionaire who acts more like a typical gunda. He is like volcanic lava ready to erupt any second; loud, rash and completely manner less.

I expected Ushnah Shah to be the weakest link in this show, but she is definitely proving me wrong. She is able to portray the innocence needed for this character with perfection. At times, I cannot believe she is the same girl playing a negative role in another show on the same channel. Her heart wrenching cries and her breakdown was brilliantly enacted by her. I enjoyed all her scenes in this episode.

photo 2(3)

I have only one word for Saira’s (Maheen Rizvi) acting: cringe worthy. Her fake accent and overacting were difficult to watch. I wish someone had told her to tone it down a bit. It was obvious that she did not like the attention Adil was giving to Rudaba after their father died. Adil has taken complete responsibility of Rudaba, and Saira had no option but to accept her presence in their lives and their house. She definitely did not like the idea of Rudaba shifting with them and Adil giving her the special treatment. Her attempt to gain Adil’s attention by pretending to be sick was just pathetic!

photo 2(2)Adil is completely oblivious to Saira’s feelings, maybe because she is good at pretending. It is in her nature to show people what they want to see and not what she is really feeling. Well, at least Adil is not heart less and cares about his sister. Frankly, I did not expect him to play the role of the doting brother.

photo 1(2)

Tayyaba’s desperation to get married was simply getting on my nerves. Bashar got angry seeing her upset and the next thing we know, he is trying to buy Salman for his sister. He tried his best to bribe Salman with materialistic things, but to no avail. Now Salman and his family would face the wrath of Bashar Momin; he will show them what happens to those people who refuse him for anything.

photo 3(2)Rudaba and Bashar’s first meeting was quite different from what I had expected. The huge contrast in their characters was so obvious. It was definitely a treat to watch the quiet and polite Rudaba meet the rash, loud and ill-mannered Bashar. The poor girl was scared out of her wits when she overheard his phone call and a bit hurt when he made her feel like an uninvited guest.

photo 4(2)The only main character that has not been introduced so far is of Buland. There is an air of mystery around his character. I had expected him to come to his father’s burial, but I guess he would not make an entry for another one or two episode. We all know that he would not turn out to be the kind of guy Rudaba expects him to be. Now let’s see when Sami Khan would make his entry in the show.

The episode was not an amazing one, but I guess we need a few more episodes to give a verdict about the show. The problem is that the show is so overhyped and our expectation level so high that an average episode would not satisfy us. We want something extra ordinary in each episode.

A special mention for the dialogues of this show; there were a few good ones in this episode. Dialogues like ‘Bika To Khareed Ke Na Bika to Loot Ke’ and ‘Yeh Doosra Sifr Hai Jis Ne Apki Behn Ko Reject Ker diya’ were a few impactful dialogues!

Bashar Momin Episode 1 – Introduction to the Characters!

0

A month or two back I posted an article on this show. It had intrigued me, but I was not excited to watch it because of its cast. Most of them are new unrecognized faces and the only person who I liked in the cast was Faysal Qureshi. There was a lot of curiosity created when Faysal Qureshi started sporting the army haircut and full beard look, but the details of the show were kept tightly under wraps till the final product was made.

I must admit the extravagance of this show has impressed me. Faysal Qureshi is seen adoring suits ranging from 1.5 to 5 lakhs and the leading ladies had sported jewelry of worth 7 crores, and trust me, these are just a few minor details. It is called the most expensive drama yet because of its extremely high budget.

Now coming to the first episode, it was not extraordinary because the story is just building up, but it was definitely a good start. We need a few more episodes to give a verdict about this show. At the end of the day, it is not the hype or the budget that matters; it is the content that attracts the viewers. The promos attracted me, but then from experience I can say that promos can be very deceiving.

photo 1(1)

The episode started with Rudaba’s (Ushnah Shah) engagement to Buland (Sami Khan). Rudaba was not too happy about the engagement because it was completely arranged, and she had never even met her fiancé. He lived in America and she thought that he might turn out to be like most typical Americans. In Rudaba’s words, he might turn out to be a ‘burger’ which was a trait she loathed in any man. She wanted a simple life partner and feared that he would feel that she was not good enough for him.

photo 3(1)

Rudaba’s character is an open book for all to read. She is simple, innocent, and naive and had lived in a protected environment all her life. She is unaware of the realities of the world and true faces of people around her. She is close to her father who is her friend and her mentor. I enjoyed all the scenes between the two, he tried his best to convince her that Buland was the right person for her and she needed to trust him. Her bonding with her father’s friend and her future father-in-law was also a treat to watch.

photo 2(1)

Rudaba’s brother, Adil (Yasir Mazher) is married to Saira (Maheen Rizvi), one of the two beloved sisters of Bashar Momin (Faysal Qureshi). Adil works under Bashar Momin who is involved in quite a few illegal activities and this has created a rift between Adil and his father who had loved the life of a sincere bureaucrat. Saira is a complete control freak, she definitely knows how to manipulate people and play with their minds. It was obvious from the way she manipulated Rudaba that she excels in her abilities. She has the ability to make people feel inferior and she always has a mask on her face; she never shows her true emotions. Her life can be in a complete turmoil, but she would always portray to the world that her life is perfect. Her sister Tayabba (Sundus Tariq) is just the opposite. She seems unsure of her herself, and is quite insecure and emotional.

photo 1

Bashar Momin is the villain and the hero of this show. We did not get much insight into his character, but I could make out a few things about his character. He has an aura that makes people bow down in front of him. He is too powerful to be challenged and hell breaks loose when he loses his temper. He has simply no control over his temper, and there is no such thing as patience inside him either. He believes in getting what he wants by hook or by crook.

Sami Khan’s character is yet to be introduced, but I can make out from the promos that he is playing the role of a broken hearted lover. Nothing new in this, he plays similar roles in every show!

There was more of an introductory episode and a lot of insight was given into different characters. Rudaba might be unhappy about her engagement, but she would do anything for her father. She promised him before he died that she will marry Buland at all cost and she will be more open minded about her relation with him now. It was quite unexpected to see the end of two important people in Rudaba’s life. This is definitely a turning point in her life.

I am really looking forward to know what happens next!

Bashar Momin – The Most Expensive Drama yet!

0

Bashar Momin has been in the news for quite some time now. According to news, it has been produced on a grand scale, and its budget is big enough to make it the most expensive drama ever made in Pakistan. It stars Faysal Qureshi, Ushna Shah, Sami Khan, Sundus Tariq, Yasir Mazhar, and Maheen Khaild. It is produced by A&B Production in collaboration with GEO.

Bashar Momin is a saga of romance, hatred, revenge and love. The photos of the first look of the serial that have been released on the internet have managed to impress us all. From the looks of it, it is going to be an extremely unique serial and first of its kind for the Pakistani Drama Industry. The producers and actors have so far remained tight lipped about the show and its story. An air of mystery is created around this new serial to make the viewers’ curious to know more. This can serve as a strong promotional strategy in itself for the show.

photo(9)

The highlight of this show is Faysal Qureshi, one of the finest actors of our Industry. It has been a while since he has been seen in serials except for his small cameo in the show, Mann Ke Moti. It is unusual for him to stay away from TV for more than a short while. There was a time when we used to see him in serials airing on every other channel at one time. Now that he has been away for a while, all the fans are eager to see him back in a central role in some quality drama. The quote ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder’ perfectly suits this situation. Faysal has been sporting the army haircut and full beard look for quite some time now for his role in this show. Apart from Faysal Qureshi, the rest of the cast did not appeal to me. I wish they had taken better female leads and supporting actors.

The play has been written by Zanjabeel Asim who had written screenplays for plays like ‘Saat Pardon Mein’, ‘Ek Nazer Meri Taraf’ and the hit telefilm ‘Anjuman’. Her writing style is quite different from other writers in our industry since she had written quite unique stories. All her stories have emotional depth that makes the viewers’ feel and experience the raw emotions. She touches bold topics in her writing that most writers refrain from discussing in their stories.

The serial is directed by Syed Ali Raza who has directed countless plays, and one of the best movies of last year, Main Hoon Shahid Afridi. He has also won the 4th Pakistani Media Award for the best director for this film. After seeing his work in MHSH and how he handled the larger than life movie with such finesse, we can be sure that directing Bashir Momin would have been a piece of cake for him.

It has also been in news that Bashar Momin would be the first serial to hit the Indian Television screen. It will soon air on a popular Indian channel, but the name of the channel has not been disclosed yet. Usually Pakistani dramas air on Indian channels like Rishtey after they have been declared a hit. This is the first time that it has been announced that a Pakistani serial will be shown on an Indian Channel even before it has gone on air in Pakistan.

The expectations are pretty high from this show. Now let’s see if it manages to fulfill the people’s expectations and the hype that is created around it.

Bashar Momin – The End!

0

Ohkay, so fair enough. Let me just say this drama had a fairly decent ending which I wasn’t expecting at all. I will definitely praise the bits that deserve to be praised. I think the developments that they showed in these last 3 episodes were what we all were looking for. I’d once again say that this drama had a lot of potential but may be the unnecessary stretching till 30+ episodes did the trick in losing the plot & pace of the drama. I think ever since the drama began, if they had revolved the plot around Bashar Momin, his character, his background, his feelings & his story, this drama definitely would’ve garnered a lot more fans. I think I’d definitely blame the writer & the director for losing the track & drifting the focus from important aspects to the meaningless ones by giving a lot more coverage to & wasting so many episodes on the supporting characters than needed.

Like we all discussed, Bashar was too softy of a don. I think in one of my reviews I did predict that Rudaba will change him, which was obvious as he was like a lost soul that needed some love, attention & guidance but the way they reached to this point wasn’t convincing at all. I really wish they hadn’t stooped so low to unleash such dark & diabolic side of Bashar because now when he rebounded from it, I had a hard time feeling for him as much as I wanted to. Obviously, Bashar fell weak & all the negativity really burdened him, which he couldn’t cope up with, that’s why he decided he didn’t want all this in his life. Saira & Tayyaba always resonated the negativity to keep him going but now when Rudaba was exposed to all this, Bashar found out that she is a different being who couldn’t bear all that & this is what made him regret doing everything that he ever did to her, in a fit of hatred & anguish. I know it would sound surprising but I kind of enjoyed the scenes between Bashar & Rudaba, I think this is how a love story should be like, less yelling & more talking. Bashar really wanted to make up for the things Rudaba had to face because of him & it was good to see him being repentant repeatedly.

I think the sudden intervention of media & police wasn’t convincing once again. Obviously, they had to show that Bashar being a don was always at a risk of losing his freedom & life but I think we were never given any grounds to know what Bashar did & what level of crimes he was involved in, that’s why it never really made any sense. I so wish they had focused more on his professional life rather than the personal lives, that too of his family, so that we could’ve found the recent turn of events a tad bit interesting.

To see Buland again yearning for Rudaba wasn’t appeasing at all. I mean how much of a self-respect-less can a man be? Did he really think that Rudaba would still be so in love with him to leave Bashar for such a spineless man like him? I think the director & we all could’ve done without him because he was useless even now just like he was useless ever since the drama began.

I think Saira got the shut up call rightly so & just when she needed some. Bashar said it loud & clear that nothing can part him & Rudaba, which was fine because the things later Adil said to her made sense as well. She has been a very self-absorbed & rigid person who never gave importance to anyone, but I think it was about time that she learnt a few lessons of life too.

So, everyone found a closure. Rudaba earned Bashar’s love. Saira learned how to mind her own business. Bashar decided to start afresh & Buland finally let go of his one-sided love for Rudaba. The ending was fair I believe but I’d still say that this drama had a lot of potential if only it was tackled properly. I so wish they hadn’t gone for such an OTT approach in executing this drama. I am sure if they had focused more on the quality of script & acting & hadn’t spent time in meaningless angles & larger-than-life appearance of everything, they might’ve given out a fairly decent play with a bit of acceptable filmy touch to it. I also feel that they should’ve invested more time on the central character & should’ve given him the required coverage to let us know why the drama was named Bashar Momin, some story starting from his childhood to his struggling days & some showcasing of how he got to such a point that made him such a ruthless yet successful don, I believe would’ve sufficed. I think if they had wrapped the drama within 20-22 episodes, it would’ve been a lot more interesting because in between, the drama & its story definitely lost the track as Adil, Saira, Tayyaba & Buland dominated the whole story while Bashar only seemed to be that person who was tending to their issues like a head of the family without having a life of his own. I so wish they had equalized the coverage of the supporting & the main characters to make a balanced & engaging drama. I must say the only person who did justice to his character in terms of acting was Faysal Qureshi & I think he certainly deserves to be credited for this. Share your say please.

ps: I must say by the end I so wished he’d get rid of his BM ring & I was the happiest when he finally let go of it, haha!

Bashar Momin – Episodes 20 & 21!

0

Ohkay so, these two episodes gave a new face to the story. Till now it looked like Bashar will make sure Rudaba runs back to him but the new twist was all about Buland & Rudaba. I am not sure but to see a married-triangle for the first time on screen was kind of awkward because till now we’ve seen engaged people running into odd triangles but to see a legally married & a potential father being involved in a triangular flick wasn’t appeasing at all.

To be very honest, I think it’s about time they should start wrapping up the story because adding new twists & turns isn’t really making any sense. Just when a calamity was inflicted on Adil, not only he got his lawn-mowed hair back but also regained some senses to realize that Rudaba’s the one who has suffered & lost the most.

Buland came on a business trip but seems like he went on a trip of his own where he forgot that he was at the verge of becoming a father but just because he likes being a puppet (which he admitted himself, so don’t blame me for calling him a puppet), he decided he has some other move to groove on. I must say the most hated husband was Awazaar of Aahista Aahista, but the most confused personality ever seen in the history of Pakistani drama industry is that of Buland. Just now when he has already had a shaadi ka laddu & the barfi’s about to be born, he’s now eyeing up his ex-fiancée who happens to be his wife’s brother’s wife as well, so cool na? *coughing sarcasm*

Buland & Adil are so blinded by rage against Bashar Momin that even though they know they’re just like mere chickens in front of him, they’ve taken the gloves off for the sake of ruining Bashar Momin the ultimate, haha, nope nope, the gharelu don. I think Bashar should understand that he’s blessed with two unfortunate souls that’ll keep on hovering around his head & they are Saira & Tayyaba, so it’s better that either he gets rid of them or baby sit them all his life because such petty issues related to his sisters are putting us to sleep.

1

I think that was a good scene where everyone encountered Buland & Rudaba’s cuckooing because this will definitely hurt Bashar’s ego & I think after this, he will make sure that Rudaba doesn’t leave him because he knows that this will not only result in Tayyaba’s home wreckage as well as he’d have to baby sit two babies with their mommies for the rest of his life for sure.

I really wanted to see a story of a don but to see it turn into a gharelu khichri is very disappointing. I really don’t see any point in spending so much money on such a script or may be that was a coaxed hoax for the sake of ratings & oh is it just me or the direction of these two episodes seemed completely different as if some other director took over to complete the project? I am not sure but seems like the team actually lost interest because the actors look lethargic, the energy saver seems to be getting dimmer & the execution’s getting poor & poorer. To be honest, I am sure by this time everyone’s only interested to know how the drama ends without actually rooting for Rudaba-Bashar or Rudaba-Buland’s jori. Share your thoughts on this shahkaar please.
