The drama film starring Iman Ali, Fhad Mustafa, and Sanam Saeed, inspired by the famed madness of 18th century Urdu poet Mir Taqi Mir, was awarded the Best Narrative Film Award at the festival yesterday taking place in Guam, a small island located in the western Pacific Ocean (just incase you didn’t know).
Mah-e-Mir was screened as part of the official selection of the festival, which included around 60 films, according to its website.
Director Anjum Shehzad was present to receive the award after the film’s special screening he also spoke to the audience about the film.

Madrassa schools is a special schooling system in Pakistan. Many of these facilities have hostels where children live and they are taught Quran with translation and tafseer. Over the years we have seen how this strength of Madrassa children is used politically and something similar happened yet again which was unfortunate.

Talking about the joint family system, Madiha Rizvi said, “I am not in favor of the joint family system because there is more respect and love in a separate family setup. When too many people live under one roof, it becomes difficult, and self-respect suffers. There are many challenges in living together, especially these days. Personally, I don’t agree with living in a joint family.”
Talking about harassment, she said, “Mothers know their children well — they know what kind of drawbacks or flaws their children have, and how far one can go. Jama Taqseem also teaches that you shouldn’t be like Nighat — a mother who hides her son’s mistakes.”
She further added that her inbox is full of abusive messages after each episode ends, and people are bad-mouthing her for playing Nighat in Jama Taqseem. She said that despite the criticism, she is really enjoying playing Nighat because such stories have an impact and they generate discussion.

In Jama Taqseem, the character of Nighat is not completely negative — there are grey areas. She isn’t entirely black or white; she has both good and bad sides. Nighat has been in this situation for 22 years, dealing with issues like arguments with her husband over their son’s upbringing and his scandals — such as the house help affair and other matters. But now, for her son, she is showing her emotional side. She doesn’t want her son to return home, she’s not even interested in the property matters, and she’s in denial about her son’s wrongdoings. Even if she knows he’s at fault, she won’t accept it.”
Madiha Rizvi further added, “Surprisingly, I’m not getting any hate for my character. I know I should have received some, but I’m actually surprised by the response to Zeeshan’s sequence. People are making reels saying, “She’s a mother, she will support,” and they’re somehow relating to it because we haven’t portrayed it negatively. These are normal things that happen in households—women express all sorts of emotions, and in the end, they turn out to be good. There’s also an ongoing debate about Jama Taqseem—if everyone is good, then who is the real culprit in society?”
Madiha Rizvi also revealed that she initially refused the script after reading the first two episodes because it seemed like a typical saas-bahu storyline. However, when the director and Mahesh convinced her to read a few more episodes and assured her that the execution of the show would be a game changer, she agreed to do it and eventually liked both the character and the script. Talking about the appropriate casting, she said, “We knew it belonged to everyone — that’s why we all performed so well. I’ve seen shows where only two actors perform well while the others fail, and as a result, the drama flops. In this case, the casting took a long time; the director was very careful. I remember the set was frequently visited by the kids who were cast for their roles. The boy playing my son was the director’s choice. Although we initially wanted another child for the role, Ali Hassan chose Illahi because he knew the character was made for him.”

It was a difficult thing for me to adjust with already grown up kids, that was a challenge for me because I had been living all my life as a single person . Talking about it, she said, “I was a bit concerned about him because he was my cousin, he was younger too who had never been into a marriage before, so, I was worried that he will marry me but will eventually run away in a short period of time”. I thought I have done something extraordinary and when the ratings came, it was very low. So what saddens me is that, those people who are sitting at home and saying you don’t do anything constructive in morning shows, when something educational is shown, at least watch it. It is just because of people that we have to do shadi seasons and totkas in shows”
