Pakistani Dramas Get Overwhelming Response In India

0

Pakistani dramas have taken the Indian viewers by storm. Not only is the general public enjoying the dramas but the actors are also appreciating the dramas for many different reasons.

Here are some tweets from Indian actors in which they share how they feel about Pakistani dramas being aired on an Indian channel.

Maula Jutt’s Cast Has Not Been Disclosed Yet – Bilal Lashari

0

There was news going around in the media that film star Noor and the notorious Gullu Butt were going to play the lead in Bilal Lashari’s upcoming film Maula Jutt. The film Maula Jutt is going to be inspired from the typical Lollywood version of Maula Jutt in which the hero uses ghandasa instead of Kalashnikovs.

Bilal Lashari tweeted on his twitter account to tell his fans that the cast had not been finalized yet so they should not listen to these rumors. He also talked to the Express Tribune directly to clear the misunderstanding.

Actresses Who Are Pretty But Not Stylish

0

Our drama industry is loaded with talented and pretty actresses. When you are in show business, your talent is not the only thing that matters but in order to get the top contracts especially for modeling the actresses should be stylish as well. Look at Mahira Khan, she is pretty and stylish so you would see her modeling for the top brands whereas actresses like Sanam Baloch or Ayza Khan who are also very gifted actresses will never be signed by a top designer because they do not have style which a model needs to carry such designer outfits.

Anyone who denies that looks and talent alone matter in entertainment industry is wrong because without style no actor or actress can go far. This is my list of actresses who are very pretty, they have the perfect features but they lack style because of which they are never seen modeling for top designers. These actresses are well appreciated as actresses but no one considers them style icons. Style isn’t only about wearing trendy clothes but also about carrying them in the right way.

I think if these actresses had style too then they could have taken the entertainment industry by storm. Right now they are restricted mostly to dramas because of lack of style.

Sajjal Ali

Sajjal Ali has beautiful, expressive eyes. She also has full lips and a good shape of face but no one can say that she is stylish. Sajjal Ali is the girl next door and with that style she can’t go much further especially in the modeling world. In dramas too, she can perform only specific roles due to the lack of style.

sajjal ali

Ayza Khan

If you look at Ayza Khan you will notice that she has a perfect face which can be transformed in Eastern or Western looks easily but does Ayza have style? The answer is no! You can’t learn to be stylish, some people do but not everyone can.

ayza khan1

Sanam Baloch

Sanam Baloch is the queen of hearts. She has won her fans over and over again by giving some outstanding performances. Sanam has a pretty face but she is nowhere near stylish Maybe that is the reason because of which she is confined to playing roles of a girl from middle class family.

sanam baloch

Sania Shamshad

Sania Shamshad has a very cute face and she has very beautiful hair. She could pass as a very stylish girl if she had that natural trendy way of carrying herself.

sania shamshad

Saba Qamar

There are no doubts about her acting skills in my head and she dresses up very modern too whenever we see her in awards. Even in some ads we have seen her wearing very modern clothes but modern isn’t always stylish. Saba Qamar still needs grooming and she is definitely not the catwalk material.

saba qamar

Madiha Iftikhar

Madiha Iftikhar does not have the perfect features but she has an attractive face. Her sense of dressing is good too but what is missing is style. She does not talk or walk like a diva!

madiha iftikhar

I know some of people’s favorite actresses are on the list, they are my favorite actresses too but the fact stays that they don’t have the style which some other actresses like Aysha Khan, Sarwat Gillani, Maria Wasti, Aysha Omer, Syra Yusef and many others have.

Saima Noor to perform item song in Syed Noor’s film Bhayee Wanted

Syed Noor has undoubtedly been the most promising director of Pakistan film industry from mid 90’s. He strengthened his position with films like Jeeva, Sangam, Ghoongat, Chor Machaye Shor, Dupatta Jal Raha hai, Deewane Tere Pyar Ke and Chooriyan. However, it all changed gradually once filmstar Saima appear in his films. Syed Noor married Saima and thereafter Saima played lead in almost all films of Syed Noor.

Recently after a long long time, Syed Noor announced one film without Saima in the cast named ‘Bhayee Wanted’ which is on the situation of Karachi. The film has new faces Yasir, Khurram Patras (Both have worked in Zindaa Bhaag) and Maryam Ali Hussain in lead roles and its shooting is under way in Azad Kashmir.

Not in the initial cast, Syed Noor has created a space for Saima in this film too, to do an item song. In her career spawning over two decades, Saima has performed in very few item songs. Her last item song was ‘Tez Chuna Lagayee Ke’ in film Ishq Khuda in August 2013 which was composed by Wajahat Attray in the voice of Sanam Maarvi. Before that Saima performed in item song  ‘Lagi Lagi’ in film Moosa Khan (2002) which was composed by Jawwad Ahmed in the voice of Naghmana Jaaffri.

Izteraab – Episode 13!

0

Ohkay, finally I can sense that this drama is on it’s way to an end & I hope it happens in another couple of episodes because I see no point in dragging such a story.

As much as I have been irritated by the boldness of Sofia’s character & the choices the writer has made in regards to her role, I wish where they have shown a 12 y/o being involved in a questionable flick, I hope they also had shown someone smacking her face, either Jazib, Zara or Dua so that her batameezi could subside. I am sorry but this little lady is a pain to watch & I will make sure I don’t follow any of the dramas in which she has a role to play. I know she’s playing a character of a girl who comes from a broken family but this just does not justify that a girl resorts to such stuff at such a young age. If the writer had nothing better to show then she should’ve opted for a girl who was at least in high-school or let’s say was 16 years of age because that still makes some sense but to show a girl who hasn’t even stepped into teenage years & is worried more about some guy thinking she can do whatever she wants, is a sick mentality & I feel the writer should reflect on the choices she makes while writing the scripts & should definitely be ashamed of giving such a twist to Sofia’s character.

Jazib is also a depiction of those weak men that frequent our TV screens every single day. I think he was having pre-withdrawal symptoms of Zara therefore he managed to overlook the past & was amazed at how amazing Zara was. It’s kind of upsetting to see such men having a win-win situation in the most nastiest of the circumstances. He has a young wife who takes care of his family & food & home, so that he gets the time to rekindle the feelings that he omce had for his first wife. A little sympathy does make some sense but those glances & gasps, that speechlessness because of Zara’s beauty was uncalled for.

Good for Zara that she is getting the attention that she wanted but it was ridiculous that she snatched that sweet moment & turned it into a complaint box regarding Dua. I even got to hear Jazib say that Zara has brought up their kids well & I am questioning the judgment of Jazib because we can clearly see how much of a good job Zara has done with Sofia especially. One thing I just couldn’t understand was the turn that Zara’s character took because the same day when Sofia was planning to hang out with her friends, Zara & Jazib were gone for dinner but the same night when Sofia went & confessed her feelings, Zara had a scarf wrapped around her head? That just didn’t make any sense but then it shows that the director is in a rush to end the drama so it comes as a good sign!

This time around I actually felt bad for Dua that no matter how hard she tries, she can never earn the respect of Zara but then after watching next episode’s preview, I think Zara will finally surrender & will confess her fears to Dua which for her sake I hope happens soon. Over all this has been a very average drama which makes me feel that if this drama wasn’t produced, we weren’t missing out on something big. Share your views on this episode.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

Noor Bukhari to host A-Plus Ramazan Transmission

The holy month of Ramazan is now just few days away, and all the channels have installed extravagant sets for their Ramazan transmission. Different channels have also signed for celebrity hosts including artists or media persons.

A-Plus is an entertainment channel based in Lahore which has strengthened its ranking as an alternate choice for entertainment through its various daramas. This year it is also launching its Ramazan transmission. As per a local news channel City42 A-Plus has signed artist Noor Bukhari as a host for this transmission.

With celebrity hosts on other channels too, this year there will definitely be a stiff competition among all the channels to get the high ratings and sponsorship.

Single screen cinema to remain closed in Ramazan

In recent times many new multiplex cinemas are constructed which have changed the film watching experience. In multiplex cinemas multiple films are screened in a day. Traditionally cinemas in our country are single screen, where only one film is screened for a specified duration, such cinemas are termed as ‘single screen’ cinemas. In Lahore most of the single screen cinemas are on Mcleod Road and Abbot Road.

For the holy month of Ramazan, most of the single screen cinemas in various cities will remain close till Eid. In Ramazan, normally attendance in cinemas is very low which makes it impossible to cover the running expenses of a cinema hall. The closed cinemas will undergo annual repairs and construction to be available in better condition for Eid shows.

Is Sarwat Gillani Losing Her Charm?

0

Let me start by saying that there was a time (not very long ago) when I absolutely loved Sarwat Gillani. There were many reasons for it; the first and foremost being her natural acting, secondly that she always focused on her performance more than her looks and most importantly Sarwat Gillani is one of those rare actresses who have been very versatile throughout their career. We see so many seasoned artists being typecast but Sarwat Gillani has always played roles that were very different.

sarwat G
I forgave Sarwat Gillani for opting to play a role that was eventually going to make very little sense in Mere Dard Ko Jo Zuban Miley because let me confess that I am just as capable of being biased about the celebrities I adore as anyone else. Sarwat Gillani was spot on in Dil-e-Muztar so I had reason to fall in love with this brilliant actress all over again. But recently Sarwat Gillani has disappointment me in more ways than one. Lately, Sarwat Gillani’s dialogue delivery in Koi Nahi Apna and Aahista Aahista both has been very monotone. The versatility that was there once is fading out fast.

sarwat gillani2

Sarwat Gillani’s hosting skills in Jago Pakistan Jago have failed to impress too. Her conversations lack spontaneity and she does not seem at ease with the whole thing at all. It is plain to see that live television and being the captain of the ship is a huge responsibility which Sarwat is not ready to take up just yet. The heavy make up does not do justice to Sarwat Gillani’s innocent face as well. I really expected Sarwat Gillani to deliver as a host but sadly I find her just as dull and lost as rest of the Morning Show hosts.

sarwat G1

I don’t mean to sound harsh at all, when you like an actor so much you expect nothing but the best from them. Has anyone else noticed any changes in Sarwat Gillani’s acting? Do you think that she is compromising on the quality of roles that she is playing or the projects that she is venturing into? Does anyone else feel that Sarwat Gillani has failed to impress the viewers with her hosting skills? I have a feeling that she may not be able to continue hosting Jago Pakistan Jago because she appears to be very uncomfortable playing the Chirpy and friendly hostess who can take a conversation forward in an intelligent way.

Sarwat Gillani is still young, talented, extremely cute and I am sure intelligent enough to make wiser decisions in the future.

Feel free to share your thoughts.

Mahnoor Baloch Will Be Seen In Indian Ads

0

Mahnoor Baloch has already proved herself as a versatile actress and a very accomplished model in the Pakistani entertainment industry. She has worked on different electronic medias. Mahnoor Baloch has also had the privilege of working in a Hollywood movie Torn.

mahnoor4

Usually Pakistani modeling agencies, clothing brands etc feel the need to hire Indian actresses to promote their brands but this time an Indian agency has hired a Pakistani i.e. Mahnoor Baloch for two ads. The ads will be shot in Bangkok soon.

mahnoor b

While talking to the media Mahnoor Baloch said, “I got this (commercial) deal only because of my talent. An artist’s art knows no boundaries. So, when you get a chance, you should prove your talent. Drama Of The Week- Talkhiyan

0

t1

Every once in a while you chance upon a drama that captivates you and delivers a truly superior viewing experience. Talkhiyan was a perfect example of that and more. Too bad it didn’t quite get the attention it deserved primarily due to the channel it aired on- one that’s not the default go-to channel for entertainment.

Background

Talkhiyan aired on Express Entertainment towards the end of 2012. The drama was directed by Khalid Ahmed, produced by Raziuddin Ahmed and written by Bee Gul who was inspired by the novel “The God of Small Things”. The ensemble cast included Sanam Saeed (Bibi), Hina Bayat (Appu Ji), Shamim Hilali (Mama Ji), Khald Ahmed (Agha Ji), Adnan Jaffer (Janu Baba), Sarmad Mirza (Monty), Hassan Niazi (Baloo), Mehak Khan (Zoya), Nargis Rasheed (Ayi), Sabina Jabeen (Zoyee- child artist), Meher Sagar (Jugnu).

Being a woman in a man’s world

The story is narrated through the eyes of Zoya, who is now a grown up woman. She revisits her maternal home in Silverwood and recollects the time she spent there after her mother, Bibi, divorced her father, Paul (a man she had eloped with). Zoya has a twin brother, Jugnu. Bibi, who was considered an outcast for marrying a firanga, returns to her father’s home much against his will. Bibi grew up in a predominantly male chauvinistic household with her father Agha Ji heading the brigade. Her mother, Mama, a blind woman, spent her years as a silent victim of domestic abuse and openly professed her preference for her son Janu Babu over Bibi. To make matters worse, she had a spinster Phuppi, Appu Ji who secretly loved a priest, Father Albert and that is why she remained unmarried. Bibi’s return with her twins is met with a cold welcome. Her father refuses to believe that Paul was capable of the monstrosity that Bibi narrates since he was an Englishman. Agha Ji was a proud Anglophile yet it’s ironic that he disowned Bibi when she married an Englishman. Even stranger that Janu Baba also married an English lady and his marriage ended in a divorce too yet no one ever brought that up. As young Zoyee soon learns, this trend of favoring boys continues in the household with Appu Ji and Mama clearly treating Jugnu like god-send. Appu Ji is vicious and self-absorbed- she enjoys tormenting the twins, and taunting Bibi over her life choices. Bibi, who’s frustrated by her circumstances has grown into a bitter woman- one who doesn’t think twice before her retorts.

122021921

Life is a Pickle, Share It

With Janu Baba’s return, Bibi’s inherent frustrations reach an all-time high. Her strained relationship with her brother pushes her towards seeking freedom and independence. Janu Baba empowers Mama and helps set up their own pickle business. Bibi works as a mere factory worker on an hourly wage. Bibi’s hatred for her brother is a result of her family’s constant rejection of her existence; the endless comparisons with Janu Baba’s many achievements make her nauseous. Things get even worse when Janu’s ex-wife Margaret and their daughter Lizzie come by for a visit. Jugnu and Zoyee become far more rebellious after Lizzie’s arrival since she is treated like a pampered princess while they are scorned for any and everything. A childhood mistake turns into tragedy- yet another blow for Bibi. Jugnu and Zoyee are suffering in their own way while Bibi tries to fight for her rights. The twins have had their fair share of trauma seeing an abusive, alcoholic father and seeing their mother lash out at them for no fault of theirs making them question their self-worth. Monty, Bibi’s cousin brings a slight glimmer of hope in their bleak existence but it is not meant to be. They befriend Baloo, the only man they know who genuinely seems to care for them.

122025242

Mujhko ab meri mohabbat ke fasaaney na kaho

Depressed, hopeless and cheated by life once again, Bibi finds herself falling for Baloo- a man belonging to a lower caste who’s generations have worked for Agha Ji’s family. Baloo is not allowed inside their homes except for work- he is considered dirty- not because of his appearance but by virtue of being low-born. But love knows no bounds and Bibi finds passion and love in his arms. However, Bibi’s happiness is short-lived and her life spirals downwards when her family gets wind of their liaison. It’s not that Bibi is a bad mother; she tries very hard to bring some normalcy into their lives, to fulfill the role of both their mother and father but the burden is too much for her to carry. Bibi adores both Zoyee and Jugnu to bits but her circumstances force her into becoming this cold, withdrawn woman. Bibi tries to start all over again and promises to make a new life for her children. Sadly she fails miserably- as a daughter, sister, wife, mother and lover. She suffers the biggest blow when she realizes that she has failed not just others but herself!

122028693

Final Verdict

Talkhiyan explored many bold and taboo subjects but did so with discretion. The story flowed seamlessly and the locations were surreal. The title song sung beautifully by Mehwish Hayat and Waqar Ali was one of my favorites of the year and continues to be part of my play-list. You can hear it here- http://tune.pk/video/10680/OST-Title-Talkhiyan-Drama-Hum-TV-Mp3-Video-Download
Sanam Saeed delivered a flawless performance as Bibi; Hina Bayat proved that she is indeed versatile and performed Appu Ji to perfection; Shamin Hilali was brilliant as always; Adnan Jaffer looked the part of Comrade Janu Baba; Mehak Khan did well for a newcomer as Zoya; Sarmed Mirza brought oodles of charm to the role of Monty; Hassan Niaza was clearly overshadowed by the rest of the actors. A special mention to the child artists Sabina Jabeen and Mehek Sagar who played the twins Zoyee and Jugnu with such ease- these kids have a future in acting for sure. Talkhiyan for me was nothing short of epic. Having read the novel, I was eager to see how it would play out and I was not letdown- not even for a split second. It was by far one of the most gripping dramas I’ve seen- a thought-provoking story, phenomenal acting, picture-perfect locations, a soothing background score; brilliant direction- everything was in perfect harmony. If you haven’t watched this one, I highly recommend it especially to any of the viewers who are currently mesmerized by Pehchaan- this one is a must-watch! For those that have watched it, I would love to hear your take on it.

P.S This will be the last review in the Drama Of The Week segment since we are taking a much-needed break with Ramadan approaching. We will keep you posted about restarting this segment. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading just as much as we’ve enjoyed writing this segment. It’s goodbye for now- from Fatima Awan, Zahra Mirza and myself- until we meet again.

Yours in watching,

Geo Films acquires latest Pakistani independent film Dukhtar

Independent Media Corporation (Pvt) Limited commonly known as Geo television is the largest media house in Pakistan. Apart from television channels, print media (including many english and urdu daily and weekly), music release company (fire records) it is also active in film distribution with its division named Geo Films.

Geo films has so far released very few (less then ten) Pakistani films in past 10 years, including super hits like Khuda Ke Liye and Bol whereas films like Ramchand Pakistani, Virsa (Punjabi) proved unsuccessful while films like Chambaili and Mohabattan Sachiyan (Punjabi) performed average. Like other divisions of Independent Media Corporation, Geo Films has been more active in distributing Bollywood films. Though unlike other divisions it also releases Hollywood films apart from promoting Indian films. As per Geo television/Jang Group, the most successful film (revenue collection wise) in Pakistan i.e. Dhoom3 (an Indian film) was released by Geo Films which collected more than 25 crore (250 million) rupees surpassing Waar.

But now after a gap of almost one year Geo Films has acquired the rights of a Pakistani film named Dukhtar, which will be released on 14 August 2014. Here is full content from English Daily The News

In the flurry of exciting news of current and upcoming film releases, a recent entrant in the Pakistani independent filmmaking scene is Dukhtar (Daughter). It is also Pakistan’s first road-trip thriller shot in the surreal landscapes of the northern areas. I am really looking forward to bringing this film to our Pakistani audiences,” said Afia Nathaniel, its writer-director and producer.   Speaking about Dukhtar, producer Muhammad Khalid Ali said, “We worked with some of the top-notch actors of Pakistan, including Samiya Mumtaz, Mohib Mirza, Asif Khan, Ajab Gul, Adnan Shah Tipu, Samina Ahmed, Saleha Aref, Abdullah Jaan and Omair Rana. We have made a film that is uniquely positioned to capture not just Pakistani audiences but international audiences as well.”   Post-production on the film is wrapping up and the film’s first look will be released soon. The film’s soundtrack was composed by Sahir Ali Bagga and Peter Nashel in New York. Imran Aslam, President, GEO TV Network adds: “GEO Films has always been at the forefront of the Revival of Pakistani cinema. We have been associated with landmark films like Khuda Kay Liye, Bol and Chambaili, amongst others, which have been significant milestones in this journey. Dukhtar is yet another meaningful film, which is a road movie inviting us to continue the journey”.

My Guilty Pleasures!

0

I’m a picky person- anyone who knows me can vouch for my crazy side. I’m picky when it comes to just about anything- most especially what I’m watching. I rate my dramas like any 5 year old in 3 distinct categories –

Wow!
Boo
Nooooooooooooo

For the most part, I give up shortly after a bad episode(s) but there are times I keep watching just to see how long I can survive. These indulgences are my guilty pleasures. Here is a list of some of my Guilty pleasures or for ease of understanding Nooooooooooooo:

1. Janam Jali– If ever there was an evil saas, BiJi can take her down in a jiffy. This woman is pure evil and if you thought it ends there enter her preferred bahu. A home-wrecker would be putting it too mildly, imagine something graphic like having your heart pulled out and chewed upon…

jj

2. Bashar Momin– Since GEO is temporarily out-of-service, I seem to have a case of withdrawal symptoms. Bashar Momim, touted as one of the most expensive dramas till date, is so tacky I don’t know where to begin! Our don is a Punjabi Lollywood stereotype, who’s life circles around fixing his sister’s love-life, finding (read buying) a suitable spouse for her and ensuring the one who is already married keeps her man! It’s by far the most engaging burlesque I’ve witnessed on Pakistani television.

bm

3. Adhoori Aurat– I watched every single episode of this drama hoping for a glimmer of some positivity. I can’t describe the trauma I had to undergo. It troubles me every time I see the word Adhoori

4. Mujhe Khuda Pe Yakeen HaiOh Mere Khuda! For me, this was Ahsan Khan’s tribute to the tragedy queens of our television. I don’t know how else to make sense of this epic drama that tortured us with the torture of seeing Ahsan cry and fall until the end- where nothing really happened!

5. Ishq Ibaadat– Faisal Qureshi’s memory loss took us through quite a ride. Two wives, accusations flying, a side track involving Momar Rana…

6. Aise Jaley Jiya– FYI- The jaley was meant in the literal sense here for those wondering what`s up with the title! Jahez, evil saas, evil in-laws, terrible husband… and some people being burnt alive! Just your everyday story this one.

MasterChef Pakistan Week 08 – Elimination Round!

0

Ohkay, so it was a pretty good episode because of Chef Saadat. I am glad he came as a guest judge & showed that successful chefs can be soft spoken too. I liked the Q&A session he had with the contestants & he actually led everyone accordingly. Where he suggested Madiha to go abroad for the initial courses, he told Gulnaz to actually stick to her roots & open up a restaurant in Chitral. He brought in some positive energy & it was great to see.

The contestants had to replicate his signature dish in 90 minutes. Even though Amna had immunity, she still attempted the dish. Maryam got an advantage of seeking Chef’s help for 20 & then 10 minutes during the challenge & the pantry was accessible throughout as well. The signature dish of Chef Saadat was ‘Chicken Roulade w/ Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Carrot & Pumpkin Purée, Blue Cheese Flan & Falsa Confit’. The dish had a lot of components & everyone did a great job in recreating the dish.

Amna got some average feedback & luckily for her she had the immunity because her dish wasn’t impressive. Chef Saadat felt that the ratio of salt was wrong in a lot of components & the purée was a lot creamy. Chef Mehboob felt that the purée had no taste whatsoever & lacked seasoning too.

Maryam benefited herself from the advantage that she got & received great remarks. Chef Saadat liked her dish on the whole but felt that the purée had a lot of white pepper in it. Chef Mehboob liked the chicken roulade because of its colour & juiciness. He liked the flan too.

Khurram recreated a great dish & shined in this round. Chef Saadat liked the presentation as well as felt that the mash was good & he commended him for making a falsa sauce better than him. He appreciated Khurram & admitted that even he feels he couldn’t make such a tasty sauce which was good to see. Chef Khurram liked the chicken & felt that the inner portion was succulent. However, he told him to improve the presentation. Chef Zakir liked the dish a lot & told him to keep up the good work.

Gulnaz couldn’t do too well in this challenge & stuffed up a few components of her dish. Chef Saadat felt that the flan was good & creamy but the potato mash had a lot of garlic in it as well as the pumpkin purée was bland. Chef Khurram liked the presentation a lot. Chef Zakir felt that the chicken was good & the stuffing was perfect but it lacked seasoning. He liked the mash potato for its flavour but found the pumpkin purée quite flat.

Sidrah didn’t perform well in this challenge as well. Chef Saadat felt that it looked more like a dessert plate & the chicken was under-cooked. Chef Khurram felt that the flan had a strong & dominant flavour of the blue cheese, falsa sauce was too sour, chicken was under-cooked & the purée was bland. Chef Mehboob found the chicken raw & the purée tasteless.

Iqra presented a great dish. Chef Saadat liked the presentation a lot but felt that the purée had a totally different flavour. Chef Zakir also appreciated her effort with the chicken & found it tender & soft.

Madiha came up with a weak dish this time. Chef Saadat felt it had no balance. Chef Khurram thought that the presentation could’ve been better. Chef Zakir thought she has lost her charm.

Zain managed to impress the judges as well. Chef Saadat thought that he cooked the best chicken so far & it was spot on. Chef Mehboob liked the chicken but wasn’t too impressed by the purée. Chef Khurram liked the presentation a lot.

Ammarah came up with a great dish too. Chef Saadat felt that the plating was good. Mash had a strong flavour of garlic but other than that the chicken was cooked to perfection & it was the best so far. Chef Mehboob felt that the mashed potato was more like a garlic purée but other than that her dish was good on the whole.

Saad was weak this time around as well. Chef Saadat found his flan flat & overcooked. Chef Mehboob thought that falsa sauce had a very strong flavour of ginger. Chef Zakir thought that just because the chicken was overcooked it was dry & the purée wasn’t smooth.

It was now time to announce the top & the bottom 3 contestants. Zain, Khurram & Ammarah came up with the best dishes therefore they were selected as the top 3. The judges justified their dishes with their honest remarks & made Zain the winner of the round. It was good to see Zain & Khurram redeeming themselves after a long long time. Saad, Gulnaz & Sidrah presented the weakest dishes however were in the bottom 3. Gulnaz was safe because she at least managed to do one thing or the other right in her whole dish but going by the judges’ remarks, Sidrah‘s dish was the weakest as nothing worked on the plate, leaving her eliminated.

I feel the judges this time around did justice with their remarks & gave us convincing reasons as to why Sidrah was eliminated. However she did put up a good dish once but didn’t stand out like other contestants. Saad got told off by Chef Zakir for the relieved gesture that he did which I found way too funny. Not the gesture but the way he was told off as if he was in a school.

It was a good episode over all & special thanks to Chef Saadat because he kept the things lighthearted. However, I do feel that they didn’t focus on showing the techniques of creating the roulade & once again the cooking was shown haphazardly. I was excited to see that the contestants had to make chicken roulade because this is something that I myself have learnt only by watching MasterChef Australia, so I was actually quite eager to see how they create it in MasterChef Pakistan but sadly nothing was shown in detail so that people could understand how’s it made. I feel that they have managed to ignore the techniques & have not at all helped the viewers in learning a thing or two about different cooking techniques. By watching other shows, I found out about the temperatures at which the contestants prepare the steaks & how they set the limits like medium-rare, rare, well-done etc, I understood how the pasta dough is kneaded & similarly a lot of other details which we may or may not use in our cooking but that’s what cooking shows are for that they also stir some sort of learning process by showing how the contestants are working in order to achieve the desired dish. I hope next time they do focus a lot on showing the techniques so that those who are interested can learn & get hold of new ideas to incorporate in their cooking. Share what you felt about this episode.

Marasim – Episode 13!

One brilliant episode it was. I am glad at the pace with which the story is progressing & it looks like everyone here gets an equal screen time that they deserve. Everyone is entitled to the attention & no one has been ignored which makes all the episodes interesting. Even if it involves Gaitiara & her repeated taunts to Nayab, Nayab & her awkwardness when she is with Daood, Daood & his past that he is reminded of when he sees Momenah, each & everyone gets a chance to make an appearance to show what they are going through & makes every episode complete.

Abdullah is now persistent on getting married to Deeba. Deeba also being a patient of self-pity had all the cards with which she could convince her mother to agree to hers & Abdullah’s marriage & she used them brilliantly. Deeba is actually really very lucky & as much as I don’t want her to get the love of her life after what she did to Daood & Momenah & after how she is treating Nayab, I still feel in order to make things realistic, Deeba & Abdullah’s marriage is just the right twist in the story. Deeba is someone who makes everyone realize how lucky; conniving people are in this world. Deeba is someone who is responsible for Daood, Momenah & Nayab’s miseries & to some extent Zaid’s death as well but still she is easily getting away with everything just because Daood & Momenah have no other option as they chose to move on in their lives. Momenah felt that she should act reasonably as there’s no reason to cling on to the past mistakes of Deeba because one way or the other she holds herself & even Daood responsible for their breakup. Daood’s agony & frustration was totally justified but just because he had Momenah in front him, he had to surrender.

I still feel a lot for Nayab as she had to go through so much because Deeba transpired Daood’s marriage & Gaitiara laid eyes on Nayab as a suitable doormat-like wife for Daood. Even though she has Daood’s support & he has made sure that she isn’t bothered by anyone, she still has to face a thing or two because of Gaitiara. I thought they would actually show that Daood & Nayab grew closer to each other but sadly, they still are nothing, but just responsibility of each other & that’s all there’s to their relation. I think very comfortably but convincingly they’ve kept a window for Daood & Momenah’s reconciliation open which still seems very acceptable.

I loved the unsaid conversation Momenah & Daood had where they laid their feelings of forgiving each other openly yet secretively. That was a beautiful scene because realistically each & every couple has a signature & secret language that only they understand & the white/blue shirt was a mere example of the beautiful relationship that Momenah & Daood shared with each other which was once again rekindled perfectly.

As much as Daood is still emotionally detached to Nayab, Momenah’s marital life is far from perfect too. Just a little conversation of hers with Fahad was enough to show that she isn’t as happy as she claims to be. Her reluctance while speaking to her mother in law & the hesitation with which she confessed love to Fahad showed how awkwardly unhappy she is.

Once again a brilliant episode with top-notch acting & direction. I am glad they have kept things so simple & real. Can’t wait to find out what happens next.

Aahista Aahista – Episode 04!

0

I know Adnan Siddique might think that I am jealous of him because I am going to be honest about him in this review, but trust me Adnan buddy that’s not the case. I actually can’t thank him enough for giving us a lot of reasons to dislike his character of Zawaar. If you want to see wuss-ness at its best, Adnan Siddique has done the honours in this show for you.

The drama makers might’ve thought that they were successful in conveying the misery of a two-timer but sorry they themselves failed miserably as well. All we could see in this episode was how Zawaar was juggling & struggling to maintain a balance in his two marital lives & to reach the level of annoyance, his love & kaseedas related to Bee Jaan. Zawaar is someone who can’t utter a single word where he is supposed to but would give a hard time to those who are younger probably way too younger to him.

While looking at Haya’s utawla-pan, I couldn’t help but imagine that an 18-5 year old had no plans for future, no dreams, nothing of her own at all? I mean all she wanted was to get married to her uncle-numa cousin & then live the American dream doing the dishes for him all her life? Not that it’s something unusual but she was too young to be so bothered about giving marriage a shot that too where she could’ve taken a stand like she did on the previous rishta saying she couldn’t imagine living away from Bee Jaan, so how come she agreed to go to the USA leaving Bee Jaan a continent apart?

I must say Sarwat Gillani is looking fresh as ever, she looked beautiful & she’s probably the only reason why I watch this show but her character needs to get some sort of a sunshine if not life as well. All these ‘tum mile mujhe zindagi mili’, ‘hamain tumse pyaar kitna, ye hum nahi jaante’ , ‘saans mai teri saans mili to mujhe saans ai’ sound too filmy to be true. I mean every couple says these words to each other but it comes naturally which they have failed to portray through this couple & still I can’t sense any chemistry between them whatsoever. I think they have told us plenty of times that Sofia can’t live without her husband & loves him to bits but the constant reminder deserves to be put on a snooze for some time now.

The epic moment of the whole episode for me was when Shireen Apa was told to snap out of her fixation to Zawaar. It was actually Haya’s business as to what she spoke to Zawaar about but Shireen Apa thought she could act all friendly & ask Haya about the details she discussed with her husband acting like those annoying relatives once again. I don’t know why but I think every character in this play needs a life, I really feel that actually.

Zawaar’s life got complete when his baby wife (Haya) came to America. Very stealthily he arranged a place for her & still couldn’t muster up courage to tell his young wife (Sofia) about her baby sautan. I think the next episode will have some action where young wife will face the baby wife & uncle husband will sneak out too terrified & too coward to face the consequences. Let’s see what happens.

Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

Laa- Episode 3 Review

0

Laa-hum-tv-drama

Jab insaan ki koi manzil na ho toh who yunhi bemaqsad safar karta rehta hai… And so begins Daniyal’s journey of self-discovery. He travels to Nawabshah to meet Naimat Khan- the man responsible for bringing him to Malik Tareen and Zarina. At the train station, he meets a lady (Sabreen Hisbani) who’s from Karachi. She enlightens him with a parallel thought- Koi bhi safar bemaqsad nahin hota; bas manzil tabdeel hoti rehti hai. Those few words give us an insight into her character- a mature woman who has probably had her fair share of problems over the years but seems to have made peace with the hand that life has dealt her.

laa2

Jab aulaad bari hojaye toh azmaish mein toh daal deti hai- Naina expedites her return to Karachi but she can’t seem to part ways with the Laa taweez. Her mother fears the taweez might be taking a toll on her personality and asks her to remove it but Naina refuses. Naina is struggling with the rejection meted out to her by Daniyal but fails to come to terms with it. She’s hurting in her own silent way- and the greatest display is the change in her personality from a vibrant, enthusiastic young girl to a quiet, silently musing one.

laa5

Daniyal too has experienced a rapid transformation. He’s filled with curiosity about his origins- his biological parents and his background but Naimat Khan cautions him to be patient. In time, he will know everything but it’s not time yet! He does let on that soon Daniyal will come face-to-face with Dayii Maa (Rabia Noreen)- the woman who wanted him dead. Naimat reveals that he saved him from her wrath. Why would Dayii Maa want a helpless newborn dead? Was he the heir to some inheritance she was after? He’s relieved to know that he was not of ill birth- a thought that was tearing him apart. Daniyal returns to Lahore and expresses his desire to find his birth parents.

laa1

I have a hard time believing Naimat Khan had sincere intention. If the story was as straight-forward as he makes it sound, why doesn’t he lay Daniyal’s anxiety to rest? Surely if he was a namak halaal as he claims to be, he would be expressing solidarity at this time instead of a stern attitude. Here’s my theory- What if Daniyal happens to be Dayii Maa‘s son and Naimat kidnapped him to avenge the death of his daughter?

laa3

I’m glad the drama maintained its pace and I’m hoping the coming episodes don’t disappoint on that front either. What did you think of Episode 3? Have you formulated any theories of your own?

P.S. Hopefully Fatima will be back very soon and will be reviewing this drama on a weekly basis.

MasterChef Pakistan Week 08 – Immunity Challenge!

0

Ohkay so, it was a pretty good episode but I must say the judges are getting a lot of talk time in each & every episode. It’s ohkay, it’s their job to do the briefing but the literal spoon feeding tends to get a bit tiresome to listen to. I think like the professionals, they should treat the contestants as grown ups & after giving out the details related to the challenge, they can let them carry on with the cooking but literally every 60 minute episode to say the least involves 20 minutes of the judges instructions (remarks excluded) which makes the episode seem a bit boring.

Anyways, this was an immunity challenge & the contestants got Quail as a core ingredient that they had to work with. It was once again a 60 minute challenge with an access to the pantry twice. I really didn’t get the ‘tuk’ of pantry pass? They could’ve easily told the contestants that after first 5 minutes in the pantry they can access it once for the last time but to see the contestants scurrying to the judges to hand them the pass seemed unreasonable & kind of unprofessional.

Amna came up with ‘Moroccan Quail w/ Couscous, Rocket Salad’ & as appetizers she presented ‘Zatir & Haloumi Fatayer’. Chef Mehboob liked the dish because it had balanced flavors, he appreciated the flavors of quail, salad & tahini. Chef Zakir felt that her dish had a perfect balance & the quail was tender, succulent & flavorsome. Chef Khurram liked the fatayer as well as the quail & also commended Amna for the presentation.

Maryam came up with ‘Crispy Fried Quail w/ Mashed Potatoes & Asparagus’. Chef Mehboob liked the quail as according to him she pulled it off really well. Chef Khurram felt that the sauce could’ve had a little more spiciness to make it complimenting to the dish.

Rayyan presented ‘Pan Seared Quail w/ Herbs’. Chef Mehboob felt that the core ingredients of the dish was weak & the side components weren’t helping the taste of the quail much. Chef Khurram liked the presentation. Chef Zakir (as usual) wasn’t satisfied with the flavors.

Gulnaz made ‘Smoked Quail w/ Zeera Rice’. Chef Zakir liked the quail but felt that when tasted with the rice & sauce, nothing was working together. Chef Mehboob found that the quail was the best he had tasted so far as it had a local flavor. Chef Khurram commented that the presentation should be improved but he also liked the flavors of the quail.

Khurram presented ‘Quail Tempura w/ Wasabi Sauce’. Chef Zakir bluntly told that he shouldn’t have worried about his choice & rather should’ve worked on what the judges would like. According to him the sauce was so overpowering that it dominated the flavor of the quail.

Sidrah presented ‘Shahi Quail Curry w/ Garlic Naan’. Chef Mehboob felt that the usage of cardamom changed the whole dish & the gravy wasn’t rich enough to be labeled as mughlai/shahi. Chef Zakir got a bit too carried away because Sidrah chose to change the name of the dish!?!?!?!. He was like ‘serious kab honge app log’? *sigh*

Zain presented ‘Smoked Quail w/ Stuffed Rolls’. Chef Mehboob felt that the rolls were too thick but the quail had some very nice flavors but it was a little overcooked. Chef Zakir felt that the quail was overcooked & lost its flavors.

Iqra presented ‘Stuffed Quail w/ Hummus & Quail Jus’. Chef Khurram found the hummus flat & Chef Mehboob felt that this wasn’t a good performance by her.

Madiha came up with ‘Fried Quail w/ Creamy Salsa’. Chef Mehboob felt that the selection of ingredients was limited & the quail was overcooked. Chef Khurram found her performance quite average.

Ammarah created ‘Quail Ravioli & Grilled Quail’. Chef Khurram didn’t appreciate the presentation much. Chef Mehboob felt that she presented 2 dishes within a dish & needed to concentrate more. Chef Zakir felt that the quail was flavorsome but the ravioli was thick.

Saad presented ‘Oven Braised Quail w/ Veggies’. Chef Mehboob felt that the quail lost it’s flavors because of the cooking technique. Chef Khurram didn’t like the presentation & also felt that only the meat had it’s own flavors & Saad failed to induce some self-created flavors in the quail.

So, the top two dishes that the judges selected were of Amna & Maryam. Amna won the immunity for the weak & was appreciated for her dish a lot. Maryam won herself an untold advantage. The next round would be an elimination round but I don’t really get why don’t the contestants wear black apron in every elimination because supposedly every elimination round is a black apron round.

I was told by one of the readers that she felt these reviews were being followed by the team of MasterChef as she felt that the changes were being made in the episodes every time something regarding it was mentioned in the review & this time I felt the same thing & if so, I would commend the team for being considerate & open to audience’s feedback. I did mention that the cameramen should speak to the contestants while they are cooking & this time around we got to see the contestants talking about their dishes. I hope that the contestants do not only speak about how good their dish is & how confident they are about the dish but also mention which techniques they were using & some more stuff like that.

Chef Zakir was as always a bit too stern but then I feel the little disclaimer that he gave was again in order to clarify the image that he is being stern in order to bring out the best of the contestants. I think there’re a lot of ways of bringing out the best in people & that certainly doesn’t happen by belittling them. It was pretty evident that the judges didn’t appreciate the contestants & their approach with the quails because by the end of the round they were speaking about the Pakistani dishes that they would’ve liked to see in this round. I think it should be highly appreciated that the contestants are not being one-dimensional & are being too brave to try different dishes & are opting for different techniques, I am glad the contestants are definitely not sticking to the ‘kormas’ & ‘karahis’.
