Sang e Mah Episode 9 & 10 – Thought-Provoking Dialogues

Ohkay so, the kind of emotions you go through while watching Sang e Mah goes to show how skillfully this drama has been written, acted & directed. Sang e Mah is definitely a masterpiece that deals with human emotions in such a unique manner. Although everything that is being elaborated may be a fantasy, but the realism in the portrayal of feelings & emotions makes it strike a chord so much. Sang e Mah has so much to offer, it is a multi-faceted story with each one of the characters having so much to contribute through their journey. Props to Mustafa Afridi for writing it just so beautifully & Saife Hassan for directing it equally well.

A Fresh Start

So far, Hilmand’s perspective has been elaborated. He overheard the conversation between Hakeem Guru Baksh & Marjan Khan; which was crystal clear & didn’t leave an ounce of doubt in Hilmand’s mind that his biological father was actually killed by his step-father; someone who lied to him & played with his feelings, someone who made him believe that he actually was a father figure to him all his life. I must commend the attention to detailing because the timeline was established perfectly during their conversation & made it easier to understand that Hilmand actually turned against Marjan Khan a couple of years ago. There definitely is more to this story but when it comes to Hilmand, this is everything that he ever wanted to know & he can not bring himself to give Marjan Khan the benefit of doubt!

Marjan Khan has definitely been trying his best to get rid of Hilmand. Although he may not say it, one after another he has been trying to create such circumstances where even a small mistake would cost Hilmand his life. This is enough to believe that maybe what Guru Baksh said was the truth & Hilmand has been right in his judgment of Marjan’s character. The way he appointed guards to protect Hikmat was yet again a move by him which would end up resulting in Hilmand’s death, with the guards being left to testify that he tried to harm Hikmat, that is why they shot Hilmand in his defense. Marjan loves Zarsanga a lot but he definitely resents Hilmand a lot more, hence the scheming & plotting against him!

Shehrzaad has fallen in love with Hilmand & she has fallen hard. The way she worded her feelings for him was simply beautiful & more so, her friend showed her the kind of perspective she actually was in need of. Although, it is a bit too early to say but somehow, it would be interesting to see how Shehrzaad may help shape Hilmand’s perspective, how she might end up saving him from being just so lost. Hilmand definitely is restless & he needs someone to make him calm. The way Shehrzaad’s character has been established, she is definitely capable of doing that.

I absolutely loved Zarghona’s conversation with Shah Sahab. The beauty of that conversation & the way those dialogues were written so profoundly, left me teary-eyed. More than that, I loved seeing how vulnerable Zarghona was & how she actually wasn’t afraid to admit that. She was definitely tired & burdened, therefore she went to Shah Sahab to help her find a way. It was beautiful how simply he told her to let go of the hatred she had in her heart & how easy it was for Zarghona to follow his advice. Mustafa Afridi gets full points for writing such meaningful dialogues. I loved how throughout Zarghona’s expressions & actions, it was made obvious that everything that she did was related to her love for her only daughter Gulmeena because of which she also understood that she was being unreasonable in putting the burden of her hatred on Gulmeena’s shoulders. Zarghona’s actions had made things difficult for Gulmeena but she decided no more.

Zarsanga & Zarghona’s conversation was another favorite moment of this entire episode for me. The way they spoke about their parents, recalled some beautiful memories & decided to let go of the ill feelings was absolutely sweet. Zarghona may have shed her burdens but the way she spoke about Gulmeena & Hikmat’s wedding showed that it put Zarsanga in a sticky situation. She has been worrying sick about what Jirga’s decision would be for Hilmand, but then again, she also knows the reason why Hilmand has not been on talking terms with Haji Marjan. There is a lot on Zarsanga’s plate but unfortunately, nothing is under her control. Another facet to this entire situation is the possibility of rivalry between Hikmat & Hilmand, which definitely as a mother she dreads the most. Gulmeena was quick to figure it out but Zarghona didn’t see it that way & she thought Hilmand will back out but she may be sadly mistaken.

Hilmand came up with this plan of Gagh only to face Haji Marjan in a Jirga. For him, this is the only opportunity, the only chance through which he will be able to avenge his father’s death. Therefore, even if Hilmand would ever want to back out from this Gagh for the sake of Hikmat, Zarghona, Gulmeena as well as Zarsanga, he will never do that only because of Marjan Khan. He has been entirely focused on how he can bring Marjan down, that is why he didn’t seem a bit too convinced when members of the Jirga showed up, asking him to deal with the family matters behind closed doors. Hilmand only wants to defeat Marjan, that is why he is ready to forsake everyone, even his younger brother Hikmat’s commitment to Gulmeena.

Thought-provoking Dialogues

This entire episode of Sang e Mah belonged to Sania Saeed for me. I can’t even tell how many times I felt overwhelmed with emotions seeing her smile, being happy, feeling finally free by letting go of the life-long burdens. Another brilliant performance was of Harshali’s father, the way he felt disappointed & helpless but had a glimmer in his eyes the moment Zarghona spoke about freeing Mastaan, it was simply a treat to watch. Hania Amir has been absolutely adorable as Gulmeena & I really like how many layers there are to her character as well. I love her sensibility & how she doesn’t shy away from calling spade a spade. There was a lot of warmth in her & Zarghona’s relationship too, which was brilliant. Gulmeena felt a lot more at ease & comfort after seeing Zarghona free from all the negative emotions. Samiya Mumtaz also gave a very convincing performance, it was a treat to see both Sania Saeed & Samiya Mumtaz as sisters, recalling their childhood.

The preview of the next episode did suggest that maybe Hikmat might find out about Marjan, therefore he might retaliate. It would be interesting to see how the story will progress now that Hilmand has found out about Hikmat & Gulmeena’s relationship & also the fact that there is no jirga that he has been looking forward to. Sang e Mah is a masterpiece, there is absolutely no doubt about that. While watching this episode, I kept on noticing how beautiful each & every frame was, how carefully it was put together, how brilliant all the performances were. However, one thing that weighs heavier on the scale are the dialogues for me, Mustafa Afridi should take a bow for such beautifully worded thoughts, it just takes this drama to another level. Please share your thoughts about these episodes of Sang e Mah.

Sang e Mah Episode 8 Story Review – Magical

Ohkay so, Sang e Mah continues to beautifully unfold. This has become a story that has everything to do with the emotions that are being experienced by the dwellers of Las Peeran. It won’t be wrong to say that watching the world of Sang e Mah on my screen is nothing short of a treat, a magical journey that takes me along. This episode was extremely emotional & showed a different side of all these characters that I so far thought I knew relatively better.

Magical & Emotionally Charged

Who would’ve thought that we’d get to see Badam Gul’s emotional side too? I love how all of them stand by their word. All this while I thought Badam Gul had nowhere to go & probably nothing much to do, therefore he decided to stay with Zarghona & help her out. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that this entire scenario was so much more than that & meant a lot more to Badam Gul. He saw Asad Ullah as his brother & after his murder, he felt obliged to stay & help Zarghona. The conversation between him & Gulmeena regarding Mastaan was absolutely sweet too. It clearly shows that Mastaan has given his all to compensate & pay for his crimes; so much so that those who are directly linked to Asad Ullah also don’t see him guilty anymore. However, when it comes to Zarghona, it’s a completely different story.

I loved the insight they gave us into Zarghona’s character & her journey. For people, she is a rebellious Zarghona who questions & challenges them every step of the way, who defies their norms & does what she deems right. However, no one truly understands or even wants to peek through the storm of emotions that have been brewing in her. The way Zarghona mourned the loss of her child, even after so many years was enough to show what she has gone through & how deeply affected she is. It definitely is not easy putting up a brave face but on the other side, she has not let any of this lose touch with her emotions. Asad Ullah wanted to name his second child Gulmeena, but because Zarghona lost that child, she may have probably changed the name of her first daughter. This was another beautiful detail that added a lot more depth to Zarghona’s mindset & how she hasn’t truly recovered from this trauma. After witnessing it all, I don’t think it’s wrong to say that Zarghona actually loved her husband deeply that is why she has made her entire life all about him & also about what happened to him.

The Jirga scene was again quite intense; it showed how Zarghona didn’t succumb to any pressures & did what she believed in. Also, Mastaan Singh realized the gravity of his crimes & how deeply he affected Zarghona’s life, therefore he let her be the one who decided his fate. At this point, it truly makes you wonder whether Zarghona will ever come to terms with what happened & free herself from these daunting burdens of the past. Will she ever be able to forgive Mastaan & accept all of his efforts as his compensation? I am keen to see that!

As the episodes progress, it is becoming a lot more clear that Haji Marjan Khan definitely is a shady character. He will do what it takes to look good & righteous to the entire world, but deep down, won’t do much to turn away from the evil plans & schemes that seemingly make things easier for him. Although the idea wasn’t his own but Marjan also didn’t truly shy away from wanting Hilmand dead. He knows the power he has over these people, therefore he is the one who ends up being responsible for what really happens. This episode made it very clear that Marjan wants Hilmand out of the way; even if it is at the cost of his life.

Shehrzaad definitely brings a new dimension to the story & the scenario in Las Peeran. I must say, it was actually enjoyable seeing how nicely they have used Shehrzaad’s character to show an outsider’s perspective about it all. Her optimism at one point seemed cute where she actually believed Zarsanga & Marjan’s words & thought all it will take her would be a single conversation with Hilmand to convince him. She really thought she could fix everything but little did she know that she was about to meet Hilmand, a mysterious man who sees the world around him differently. Who will also change her perspective & empower her to face & fight her inner demons. I must say, the interaction between Hilmand & Shehrzaad was simply magical. It was written beautifully & acted even better. The way Shehrzaad stood there spellbound, unable to take her eyes off Hilmand, trying to decipher every word that he uttered & Hilmand just being who he is, seemingly free-spirited who has so much running through his mind. Shehrzaad actually forgot why she was there but knew whatever was happening was something special & she couldn’t let go of it. Shehrzaad probably for the first time felt such a rush of emotions because maybe she felt protected for the first time. The black shawl was a true depiction of it & the way she held onto it showed this is exactly what she wanted. It was truly beautiful.

Shehrzaad knew she had to return but what actually happened further convinced her that she had to burn the bridge & never look back. It must’ve been possible that she actually stood up for herself for the first time & did not hold back in saying what she felt. She has changed & Hilmand has a lot to do with the shift that Shehrzaad not only felt but acted upon. It was really very interesting to witness.

Phenomenal Performances

This episode of Sang e Mah was beautiful & emotionally charged. However, this entire episode for me was about the interaction between Hilmand & Shehrzaad. Atif Aslam has really done wonders as Hilmand & not even for once does he let you feel this character should’ve been portrayed by someone else. Kubra Khan has also been phenomenal as Shehrzaad. The subtlety in her body language, in her demeanor, the perplexity & then the grief on Shehrzaad’s face; all of it has been convincingly portrayed by Kubra. Nauman Ejaz is known to give spellbinding performances & Sania Saeed is a class apart. Each & every scene of hers has been a treat to watch. I really commend Hania Amir for playing the character of Gulmeena so beautifully, she has brought a lot of cuteness & charm to the drama. Hassan Noman is another favorite & I thoroughly enjoy watching Badam Gul & everything that he has to say & confess. Sang e Mah is getting stronger with each passing episode. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Sang e Mah.

Sang e Mah Episode 7 Story Review – Strong Storytelling

Ohkay so, every episode of Sang e Mah begins on a strong note & ends even stronger. There is so much intrigue when it comes to the story as well as the characters & I must say, the director has done a commendable job in keeping that mysterious vibe alive so far. Despite knowing these characters somewhat, you just want to learn more about them. There are also so many subliminal hints & messages related to the characters that actually make you think about them as the episode progresses. It won’t be wrong to say that Sang e Mah is one of the strongest dramas on air right now.

Past Happenings

In the middle of this chaos, I find it really nice that both Zarsanga, as well as Shehrzaad, have found a friend in each other. Zarsanga comfortably tells her everything & she listens carefully. I actually did not expect that Shehrzaad will open up in front of Zarsanga but it seems she is just as lonely, therefore she couldn’t resist confiding in Zarsanga. Their conversations always sound genuine & relateable. It is nice to know that two women from different backgrounds are finding it so easy to talk to each other, it just goes to show that they longed for emotional support all this while & now that they have found it, it is helping them. It also makes me wonder that later when Shehrzaad will find out the truth about the circumstances in which Zarsanga & Marjan got married, she might be able to help Hilmand change his perspective & see his mother differently.

The story that Zarsanga told Shehrzaad suggested that Hilmand actually had a good relationship with Marjan all his life. About 2 years ago things changed between them. I feel it must’ve been during that time when Hilmand must’ve found out that Marjan didn’t just get married to his mother, but he actually had killed his father too. This piece of information kind of solved the conundrum but then again, you just don’t know what to expect in Sang e Mah.

One thing is clear that Haji Marjan definitely is one such person who does not like to be defeated. He can not stand it, therefore he will do what it takes to manipulate the situation to his favor. All his life, he manipulated Hilmand into believing that he was this perfect father figure to him, who not only loved his mother but also accepted Hilamand wholeheartedly. However, the things he has said about Hilmand in some of the recent conversations he has had with Zarsanga are enough to show what he actually felt about Hilmand. Haji Marjan can definitely be termed as a manipulator & somehow, now when his manipulation is not really working, he is definitely becoming restless.

This episode dug deeper into what happened between Zarghona & Mastaan. Zarghona actually believed that her husband Asad Ullah never uttered what Mastaan was accusing him of. They have been shown to co-exist peacefully but in the recent events, the way Zarghona has also spoken against Mastaan’s set of beliefs definitely shows that her family harbored these feelings & sentiments against the entire Sikh community. I really enjoy the stark contrast between Mastaan Singh of the past & the present. He actually was emotionally driven but now, he has actually calmed himself down. He doesn’t look like the same person anymore. I think he happens to be the only one who has actually shown growth in this regard because when it comes to the rest of the characters, they all seem pretty much the same now as they were in their past!

Gulmeena & Hikmat as a couple are definitely my favorites & I really feel for them both. They not only love each other wholeheartedly but compliment each other so well. However, it is said that the circumstances are totally against them. For the first time, I felt that Zarghona’s heart melted. The way she ran after everything that Gulmeena said went to show that she doesn’t want any of this to happen because she holds Hikmat as well as Hilmand close to her heart. She has everything against Marjan but not against his sons. Also, this reaction of Zarghona came at the right time because all this while, she actually looked detached & a bit too rigid, but it was definitely nice seeing that she was very much in touch with her emotions but was just putting up a brave face for the sake of this world.

I don’t know why, I have a feeling that Sabz Ali is again going to land Hilmand in trouble. The flashback didn’t include Sabz Ali’s name without a reason. He definitely is a confused character & although he might not be an evil person at heart, he definitely is the kind of friend who can turn into a foe without even realizing it. I hope Hilmand knows what he is doing now that he has appointed Sabz Ali as his assistant. However, I will say that all these supporting characters also have such a strong contribution to the story that you actually want to see them more.

Strong Performances

This episode of Sang e Mah was definitely interesting & ended on an emotional note. Sania Saeed is definitely the star of the episode. Hania Amir’s performance was spell-binding. She actually makes you feel for Gulmeena & I must commend her for keeping her overall look quite natural. It adds more depth to her performance. I am low-key sad that this episode did not have a lot more episodes of Hilmand. Kubra Khan has done justice to the character of Shehrzaad & has given such a measured performance as a journalist on her own journey that you automatically warm up to her. Noman Ejaz is another star of this drama, the way he has worked on his looks in both the past as well as the present scenes is commendable. Sang e Mah is a brilliantly written drama & the story is being told equally well. Props to the entire team. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Sang e Mah.

Sang e Mah Episode 6 Story Review – The Revenge

Ohkay so, every episode of Sang e Mah brings a new set of revelations with it. Undoubtedly, everything is being presented in such a manner that it makes you ponder upon it. While watching the flashbacks in this episode, I wondered if all of this actually happened or this was entirely a fragment of Hilmand’s imagination? It will definitely be interesting to learn more about the past. I must say, usually in a lot of dramas, they fail to connect you with the characters that you barely think or want to know about what happened in the past, but in Sang e Mah, the entire story is based upon what happened before & they have established the storyline convincingly.

Hilmand’s Plan

Shehrezaad has made it very clear that she is here to stay & will not return until she finds out the reason why people commit Gagh. Marjan tried his best to convince her, more so that she wraps it all up & leave but that definitely is not going to happen. Shehrezaad is quite persistent & I like her confidence as well. Although she has been welcomed by Marjan & his family, she respects them for hosting her but when it comes to her work & her commitment, she has made it obvious that budging is definitely not an option. Her conversation with Hikmat also showcased how easy it is for her to communicate with people. She has a deep understanding of emotions & feelings, this is why she tries her best to get to the root cause of everything. Shehrezaad has figured out what Hikmat is going through, this is why she wanted to extend some support to him.

It was definitely quite interesting to learn more about Mastaan & his family background. Hakeem Guru Baksh was Mastaan’s father. According to Hilmand, he helped Marjan in poisoning his father. This is exactly why Hilmand paid a visit to Hakeem Guru Baksh before he passed away, only to remind him of what he has done & how Hilmand was going to avenge his father. Although it is still unclear whether all of this was exactly what happened or not, but the look on Guru Baksh’s face when Hilmand said all these things to him directly pretty much gave the impression that he must’ve been guilty of what Hilmand was accusing him of.

In this entire equation, it is quite perplexing how Marjan steers clear from every accusation that Hilmand directs at him. He makes it look like he hasn’t done anything & in actuality, he is the victim. However, seeing how he is suffering definitely shows that there is a lot that is weighing heavy on his heart. While watching this episode, I definitely found myself wanting to see whether Marjan was actually guilty or not.

Mastaan did not get married to Harshali because he decided to sacrifice his life, making up for killing Asad Ullah. I liked seeing the different perspectives where Zarghona has not been able to move past her husband’s loss but Gulmeena felt like she needed to be present for Mastaan because she has seen how he has been trying his best to make up for what he has done. Gulmeena made it very clear that although she must feel the absence of her father, she also held Mastaan close to her heart because he has been a brotherly figure to her all her life. I really like the kind of relationship Gulmeena has with Mastaan as well as Badam Gul. It is all very sweet to witness. I liked how they explored all these equations & the journey each one of them was taking. Hakeem Guru Baksh & Marjan shared the same burden, Mastaan was paying the price for killing Asad Ullah, Harshali was suffering because of the love she had for Mastaan & in this entire picture, it was Hilmand who had beef with all of them.

Hilmand & Marjan’s interactions definitely have to be my favorite scenes from every episode. I really like the clarity Hilmand has. The way Marjan outbids Hilmand in intelligence goes to show how far ahead he is in terms of experience but it is always interesting to see how Hilmand leaves Marjan speechless with his bluntness & harsh words. Marjan has tried his best to convince Hilmand to see him as his father but Hilmand has made it quite clear that he is never going to accept that.

Phenomenal Performances

This episode of Sang e Mah was nothing short of a treat. Sania Saeed stole the show with that short scene of Jirga where she demanded justice for her husband’s death. It showed that her honesty & uprightness left a long-lasting impression, that is why all of them still remembered how she fought for herself the day her husband died. I also really liked seeing how they showed people from the Sikh community were a part of the Jirga. It presents a nice image of how easy it is to co-exist peacefully & how important it is to have everyone feel included as a part of the decision-making committee. Noman Ejaz has always done wonders when it comes to such characters but it is commendable how Atif Aslam has matched that level of performance & has established such a strong screen presence that too in a frame that is shared by experienced & seasoned actors. All this while, I always wondered why Zarghona was fine with Mastaan working for her but not with Gulmeena mingling with him. It now became clear that more than the difference of religion, it had to do with the resentment in her heart for what Mastaan did to her husband because like they have established, they all live peacefully together therefore Zarghona’s comments about their community only stem from the bitterness she feels after becoming a widow. Hania Amir has also given a convincing performance as Gulmeena. I like her character a lot too. Atif Aslam has been phenomenal as Hilmand & I must commend the writer Mustafa Afridi for writing down such brilliant dialogues. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Sang e Mah.

Sang e Mah Episode 5 Story Review – Hilmand’s Oblivion

Ohkay so, it was yet another interesting episode of Sang e Mah, full of twists & turns that definitely no one saw coming. I am sure after watching this episode, Hilmand’s oblivion could be debated upon but going by how the writer has conceived the entire idea, it does make a lot of sense. Usually, in such close-knit villages & towns, people do have an idea about almost each & everything, but seeing how detached Hilmand is from everyone, it feels believable that he actually had no idea how he was putting his younger brother Hikmat in a sticky situation. Once again, this episode ended on an intriguing note & I am keen to see how things are going to unfold.

Hilmand’s Oblivion

Shehrezaad was sent away by Marjan Khan’s assistant but she could feel there was definitely something that was being kept from her. Shehrezaad’s character has just been introduced in the story but so far, I do like her for being honest, uncomplicated & straightforward. These qualities definitely set her apart & make her come across as a sorted person. She was adamant to find out more about Gagh, that is why she completely ignored how Marjan devised a plan to send her away. Shehrezaad’s interaction with Gulmeena & Zarghona was definitely quite interesting. Not everyone has to open up about their personal affairs. She did seem a bit too curious & the way she tried to convince Zarghona made it obvious that even she knew it was not going to work & wasn’t a reason enough for Zarghona to tell her everything. Luckily for Shehrezaad, Marjan decided to come clean & tell her his version of the truth but this is just the beginning. I really liked how Shehrezaad wasn’t afraid to face Haji Marjan as well.

Hilmand absolutely had no idea that Hikmat loved Gulmeena. This is exactly why he seemed unsettled after he found out about it. Just like Zarghona said, Hilmand definitely came up with this to turn a few pages from the past, to bring Haji Marjan down, in order to make him pay the price for what he has done. Zarghona seemed a little too satisfied because she knew exactly what Hilmand did & how this was going to result in Marjan Khan’s undoing – something that she herself has been wanting all this while. Although both Zarghona & Hilmand have not had a conversation yet, but it will be interesting to see how they will approach this matter while being on the same page. So far, their ulterior motive is very much the same.

Hikmat has been heartbroken, his interaction with Hilmand was also really nice. One thing has always been clear that Hilmand has loved Hikmat with all his heart, that is why he even asked his friend to inquire about the equation Hikmat shared with Gulmeena. It is interesting to note the kind of animosity Hilmand has towards Marjan that no matter what happens, he always feels Marjan is responsible for it all, he is playing his game & he is devising all the plans. He actually thought Hikmat was making it all up because Marjan had told him to. Everyone has become a bit too invested in this situation because they all know this is going to be one difficult decision for the Jirga.

I must say, Badam Gul brings in so much comic relief that it’s always fun to watch his antics. His dialogues, his expressions, mannerism – everything is just so unique but what makes it funnier is how Zarghona & even Gulmeena let him be & have accepted him the way he is. Mastaan has been affected by what has happened, therefore it seems he will try to take matters into his hand. He is quite loyal to Zarghona, therefore she will find him right by her side. I feel his character deserves to be explored a little too – as far as the visuals are concerned, he has gotten a lot of coverage but when it comes to his character, you barely know anything about him.

Profound Dialogues

It won’t be wrong to say that there are a lot of factors that Sang e Mah will be remembered for but the most important ones are definitely the dialogues & also Atif Aslam’s performance as Hilmand. The poetic dialogues, with such profound meaning suit not only Atif Aslam but Hilmand’s character so much. It goes to show the kind of effort Mustafa Afridi must’ve put in order to conceive this character & bring him to our TV screens. Every shot has been beautifully designed in Sang e Mah, which makes it a visual treat. Although the story is unique & fresh, it still feels very realistic – this is what the star-power has done to this drama. They all feel very real & keep you invested in their story. Sang e Mah Episode 4 Story Review – Expect The Unexpected

Ohkay so, with Sang e Mah, it is a good idea to expect the unexpected. It is commendable how the writer Mustafa Afridi has written these characters who are not only unpredictable but know how to change the tide. The most important character obviously being of Hilmand took us off-guard with what he did, but it is amazing how just a dialogue or two from him are enough to insinuate what’s going on in his mind. Sang e Mah has definitely has been a drama to have a strong start, but the way it keeps on getting better makes me look forward to it even more.

Hilmand Waged A War

Hikmat definitely is in touch with his emotional side & more so because he reveres Gulmeena. Therefore he has always thought on the lines of Ghagh but always found himself chained knowing that this is not only going to malign Gulmeena’s image but will put her in a deep pit that she might never be able to come out of. It is endearing to know that Hikmat is capable of loving Gulmeena this way where doesn’t let his emotions get the better of him & allows him to be logical. Gulmeena gets a lot of credit for keeping him sane too because she also doesn’t want him to do something irreparable. Gulmeena understands where her mother comes from therefore she just doesn’t want to do anything to hurt her further. I have said this before & I will say it again, the love story of Gulmeena & Hikmat may not be new but the way it is being told makes it very special. It is like you find yourself rooting for them because they genuinely are two harmless souls who love each other with all their hearts. It is however unfortunate that their elders share such a bitter past that it continues to haunt them to this day!

Hilmand was definitely not going to sit quietly after how Marjan Khan beat him in Sabz Ali’s case. Hilmand was definitely looking for a reason to stand against Marjan that too in a Jirga. Hilmand doesn’t want to bring Marjan Khan down in seclusion, he wants to make it public, he wants everyone to know what his stance is. It is kind of twisted but makes Hilmand’s perspective quite clear that he won’t shy away from taking the most difficult paths to get where he wants to. Right now, all Hilmand wants is to bring Marjan down, therefore he decided to do what none of them would’ve ever imagined. The brief interaction between Hilmand & Shehrezaad was a sight to witness. Their chemistry, their screen presence while sharing a single frame were spot on. Hilmand was definitely taken aback, he noticed her but didn’t make it obvious to her. There was something about Hilmand that Shehrezaad noticed too & just a brief encounter made me want to see them together a lot more.

Sang e Mah Episode 4 Story Review - Expect The Unexpected

Marjan & Zarghona’s conversation was so intense. However, it made one thing clear that Marjan may not have much to do with the death of Zarghona’s husband because his body language & demeanor showed clearly that he wasn’t uncomfortable or awkward in front of her. I really like how both Samiya Mumtaz & Nauman Ejaz have portrayed this aspect of Zarsanga & Marjan’s character. They make it very obvious when they are uneasy like Zarsanga was in front of Zarghona & even how Marjan is in front of Hilmand. While this conversation lasted, it was pretty obvious that Marjan doesn’t think there is any reason for Zarghona to be so stubborn about Hikmat & Gulmeena’s marriage, almost as if he hasn’t wronged her in any way. I love the way Zarghona words her feelings; be it of anguish or dismay.

Shehrezaad met Haji Marjan Khan. Little did she know that there was so much more than what he was sharing with her. Marjan was definitely putting up an act, making it look like everything was under his control & things ran smoothly in his tribe but little did he know that he was about to get busted. Even before getting involved in what Hilmand did, he decided to take care of Shehrezaad because he knew things were about to get grim & the last thing he wanted was the media coverage of it. Shehrezaad has absolutely no idea what she has gotten into but luckily, Hilmand will come to her rescue sooner or later. Kubra Khan gave such a convincing performance throughout the scene when Shehrezaad interacted with Marjan, her fear & discomfort was quite obvious.

Phenomenal Performances

This episode of Sang e Mah was a visual treat & it ended on such a powerful note too, a heartfelt message from one mother to another. Another underlying message was that Sabz Ali’s mother hoped that Zarsanga’s son will face the same verdict if Jirgah would be fair considering Hilmand comes from an affluent family with Marjan having the final say in the Jirga. Zaviyar Ejaz & Hania Amir have played their part beautifully. I love seeing Hikmat & Gulmeena together & I feel for them a lot. Sania Saeed & Nauman Ejaz are a class apart. Samiya Mumtaz has played her part phenomenally & then we have Atif Aslam who definitely is the star of this show. The confidence with which he has performed Hilmand’s character with each & every move thought, expression portrayed with clarity is a testimony to how great of a performer he is. I can not wait to see the next episode. Props to the writer Mustafa Afridi & the director Saife Hassan for bringing something this grand, unique & exciting to the table. Sang e Mah Episode 3 Story Review – The Past Unveiled

Ohkay so, just like the previous two episodes, this episode of Sang e Mah was thoroughly enjoyable & captivating. There is so much to each & every frame that while absorbing it all, it actually feels like you are a part of some other world where everything is unfolding in front of your eyes. The screen presence of all these actors is so strong & their performances are so so powerful that it really keeps you engaged as a viewer. Sang e Mah definitely has become one such drama that has not only had a great start but continues to be promising & with each passing episode, the curiosity keeps on building.

The Past Unveiled

This episode unveiled the most important event from the past, which was Zarsanga & Marjan’s affair & how they both got to be together. This is exactly the reason why Zarghona thinks so low of her elder sister because what she did was definitely unforgivable in such a conservative society. Zarsanga was already married & had Hilmand when Marjan decided that he wanted to marry her. For Marjan, it was just an emotion that got the better of him but for Zarsanga, it was nothing short of an extramarital affair. This episode beautifully explained all the emotions that Hilmand has felt towards Marjan; why he calls Marjan his wife’s husband, not his father & why he continues to cling to this grave of Nasrullah Khan; his biological father. I must commend Samiya Mumtaz for showcasing Zarsanga’s awkwardness to perfection when Zarghona decided to turn some of the pages from the past, it was obvious that she knew everything that Zarghona said was true & why she had all the reasons to be so bitter about it.

Marjan definitely has his struggles but he continues to hide them from everyone. One very important conversation between Zarsanga & Marjan showed the contrast between what he truly feels & the facade that he carries in front of the whole world. Marjan easily came up with a dream that he shared with his wife to put her heart to ease but after she left, he admitted to having been ‘sinful’ all his life. I am interested to find out how he actually got married to Zarsanga – did it happen easily or did Marjan have to kill Nasrullah to get his lady love. This also brought me to one very important question regarding why Zarsanga felt so passionately about Sabz Ali & Ghagh. It makes me want to know her more when deep inside she herself is well aware of what she has done & why Hilmand is so detached & aloof to his entire family!

Sang e Mah Episode 3 Story Review - The Past Unveiled

I loved the scene between Hilmand & Sabz Ali. It showed that for Hilmand, sincerity & trust are what matter the most. He stood up against the tide only to protect his friend but later when he figured out that he has been lied to, he actually wanted to convey that to his ‘friend’ too. It is true, Sabz Ali actually wanted to marry that girl, that is why he committed Ghagh but because he was afraid of the consequences he lied to Hilmand about being intoxicated & not in his right frame of mind. The more I watch Hilmand’s character, the more I want to learn about him & his battles. One thing is for sure, he wants to come to terms with how his life has panned out after his mother made the decision of marrying Marjan Khan but he is finding it hard to do so & which makes it very perplexing for him.

Hikmat is trying his best to get married to Gulmeena but he is unable to figure a way out. The things he said to his mother also showed that at some point, even he will try to dig deep into the past only to be left disappointed. The way both Zarsanga & Marjan reacted to everything showcased how they both are sad & unsettled deep inside – they both are putting up a facade but probably the weight of their decision & the consequences of it all is too overbearing for them, which is bringing them down.

Badam Gul continued to bring some comic relief to the overall grim situation. It is actually sweet how both Badam & Mastaan treat Gulmeena as their own daughter. Mastaan is definitely going to protect Gulmeena whereas Badam will always stay loyal to Zarghona. It is commendable how they have established the characters & their personalities that you actually feel like you understand them a bit too well, even though the drama is still in the initial stages. Gulmeena also wants to get married to Hikmat but she is also well aware of how difficult it would be to convince her mother. Zarghona is another character that I want to explore; the things she said to her sister & later to Gulmeena when she saw her mingling with Mastaan goes to show that she too is very staunch in some matters & has a very conservative mindset. It kind of makes her a very interesting character because she openly defies the norms of the society that she is a part of only for her survival. I am keen to learn her story too.

Brilliantly Directed

This episode of Sang e Mah was totally gripping. Director Saife Hassan should take a bow for capturing every scene so beautifully. I loved the shot from the past where both Marjan & Zarsanga meet. All the frames have been carefully crafted & beautifully captured. The actors continue to be impressive. I really liked Zaviyar Noman’s performance in this episode too. While watching Samiya Mumtaz & Saniya Saeed share the screen, all I could think of was how strong their screen presence was & the kind of performance I was getting to witness from both of them. Atif Aslam is a star for a reason but to outdo himself & prove his mettle as an actor is a feat in itself. Sang e Mah has been nothing short of impressive & I can not wait to see how things unfold. Sang e Mah Episode 2 Story Review – Intriguing

Ohkay so, Sang e Mah is definitely the kind of drama that actually makes you look forward to it. Only 2 episodes have aired so far & I can not even begin to think what they have in store for us. The characters are intriguing & their stories seem to be quite interesting too. At this stage, they have succeeded in raising the questions in my mind as a viewer that what actually is wrong between Hilmand & Marjan, why he doesn’t shy away from showing his resentment to his father?

Jirga’s Decision

Hilmand definitely knows how to change the tide, maybe this is one of the reasons why he feels disconnected from his father because he goes by the rules & regulations, whereas Hilmand, despite being in touch with his emotions is also a logical thinker. The way Hilmand changed the course of Jirga was impressive & showed what is it in him that gives him the edge over everyone else around. Hilmand knew exactly what he was doing, but it also gave him a lot of pleasure knowing that he was outbidding his father in this competition. That entire sequence was done brilliantly because at the end, Marjan also showed that he was thinking two steps ahead of Hilmand & also how experienced he himself was.

I must say the actor playing the role of Sabz Ali as well as his mother played their parts just so well that I actually teared up at their predicament. The way his hands shivered as his mother tried to soothe him was probably my favorite scene of this episode. Sabz Ali definitely loves that girl, therefore he thought after committing Gagh, he will eventually go scot-free but that definitely turned against him, despite the fact that Hilmand tried his best to help!

Sang e Mah Episode 2 Story Review - Intriguing

Gulmeena & Hikmat’s scenes brought much-needed relief throughout the episode. Also, Hikmat’s conversations with his mother are cute too. She obviously doesn’t take him seriously, therefore no matter what Hikmat was going through, she didn’t really think it was something worth paying heed to. Zarsanga did seem a bit out of a touch with reality because as soon as Hikmat mentioned Gulmeena, she should’ve understood what he was trying to imply. On the other hand, Zarghona has proven to be quite far-sighted & also pretty sorted. Her conversation with Hikmat showed exactly what she wants & if possible, how would she like things to proceed. Although at this point Zarghona seems a bit too rigid, it could also be because she knows Marjan & Zarsanga a bit too well, that is why she wants to protect Gulmeena from heartbreak. She knows Marjan & Zarsanga will never come to her place seeking Gulmeena’s proposal for Hikmat, that is why she is trying to prepare Gulmeena for it. Hikmat is adamant that he actually wants to marry Gulmeena but sadly, he too is immature to approach it in a feasible manner.

Powerful Performances

Sang e Mah is definitely going to be one interesting journey to witness. I love how quick-witted all these characters are & how unique they are in their own way. I am also interested to find out why things are bitter between Zarsanga & Zarghona. Zarsanga & Marjan also have a past & the note at which the episode ended with Zarghona talking against Zarsanga’s character goes to show that this might be a bone of contention between the sisters. Some of the scenes always bring in a lot of relief such as Zarghona’s conversation with Badam Gul & also Hilmand’s monologues to which his friends are always there to react. At this point, I can not wait to explore all these characters & kind of have this faith in this team that they are going to bring something absolutely exciting in the upcoming episodes. The preview of the next episode was quite dramatic too, can’t wait for it. All the actors have performed brilliantly but in this episode, the actors playing the characters of Sabz Ali & his mother stole the show for me with their powerful portrayal of such strong emotions. Well-directed & well-written for sure & I love how crisp the camera work is. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Sang e Mah.

Sang e Mah Episode 14 – 16 Story Review – Everyone Has A Story To Tell

Ohkay so, Sang e Mah continues to provide the quality entertainment, along with profound dialogues & interesting stories that each & every character has to share. The story on the whole may not be making a lot of progress but every episode continues to be engaging enough. The most interesting aspect of recent episodes is how they all are weaving their own story & how all of it is getting interlinked. It won’t be wrong to say that Sang e Mah is one such drama where every character has something to offer.

They All Have A Story To Tell

Shehrezaad is definitely not leaving Hilmand’s side. She has yet to learn about him & his struggles but somehow every time she hears him talk, she can feel the honesty as well as the sorrow that he is carrying with him. This is exactly why Shehrezaad feels drawn towards Hilmand because she connects with him on an emotional level. Hilmand too has figured out about Shehrezaad’s past but the way he assured her that he was going to stand by her was simply beautiful. This entire scenario has been conceived thoughtfully where Shehrezaad didn’t have to say anything, she didn’t have to revisit the demons by painfully wording the trauma that she had faced, but eventually Hilmand found out about it & put her heart to ease. There is a lot more development left before labelling it as a love story but so far, the equation that Hilmand & Shehrezaad share is one of the best emotional connections that I have come across in a Pakistani drama!

I won’t sugarcoat that at times I felt the entire Gagh scenario was being dragged but at this stage, the way it has led to certain developments makes it remain the focal point of the story. Hilmand committed Gagh & then got attacked, ever since there has been a rift between Marjan & Hikmat because Marjan thinks it was his doing. Gulmeena feels burdened because she knows all of it happened because of her. Badaam Gul knows the truth, but he too feels torn between speaking the truth or keeping Mastaan’s secret. Zarsanga is torn between her sons & Zarghona also knows no matter what happens, none of it is going to guarantee her daughter’s happiness. I must say, one may not expect Badaam Gul to make sense most of the times but the way he explained everything to Mastaan was one of my favorite conversations of the entire drama so far. He made it clear how eventually Gulmeena will be the one paying the price of what Mastaan thought was a favor upon her. This entire situation is definitely tricky & I can not wait to see how the writer Mustafa Afridi will wrap it up skilfully!

Who would’ve thought that Las Peeran would turn out to be such a diverse place with peoples from all walks of life, different backgrounds & belief systems living in it. Haji Marjan not only had an encounter with a practicing Christian, he had fond memories of him too, so much so that he actually saw him as a father figure. Nurse Martha’s track was also done nicely & goes to show how drama makers are now paying more attention to diversity & representation in Pakistani dramas. At times it may look slightly forced but in Sang e Mah, they kept it as organic as they could, which is actually refreshing to see. I will say that Awal Khan has made quite an impression on the audience’s mind, especially regarding how he mistreated his wife Zarghona, so to use him in Martha’s relevance as well as trying to soften the hearts of the viewers towards him was a bit of a stretch. So far we have seen him trying to harm Hilmand on Marjan’s order, as well as trying to target Shehrezaad in order to frame Hilmand, so for him to act so nice to Martha & all of a sudden think of Zarghona didn’t really sit well with me. Having said that, it did not take away the importance & relevance of Martha in the story.

Sabz Ali has always been a troublemaker & this time around he made sure to create some more problems for his townspeople. Sabz Ali & his mother is definitely hungry for the revenge therefore they are doing what it takes to held them all accountable, be it through their harsh words or actions. The members of the Jirga have faced enough embarrassment, therefore they decided to conduct the session so that they could hold Hilmand accountable for what he did. Marjan knows exactly what will happen & the things Hilmand is capable of saying that is why he already felt defeated. I would like to see some insight into Marjan’s character. He definitely is a layered character but I think they have used enough time & now it’s necessary to be more definitive about him, or at least give us the audience some clarity about him. They don’t have to give away it all because that would mean the end of the story but at this stage, seeing Marjan dodging the bullet by simply saying he did nothing to Asadullah is repetitive & just not enough. The only likeable thing about Marjan is his love & gentleness towards his wife Zarsanga, he definitely fell in love & fell harder but other than that, there is a lot more that needs to be known about him!

I did not find Zarsanga’s oblivion convincing at all. In such a small town where everyone knows everything, where the house help gave Hikmat a piece of her mind for attacking his brother, for Zarsanga to not know where Hilmand was made little sense whatsoever. Also her way of coping with the heartache was again quite interesting. I like how all these characters are just so flawed & do not shy away from admitting their mistakes; except Marjan who refuses to state the truth & hides behind a mere no all the time. Zarsanga is quite an emotionally unavailable mother. She couldn’t do much to save Hilmand & make him feel loved & now when it comes to Hikmat she is deliberately pushing him away by not believing him at all.

Impressive Storytelling

Sang e Mah has definitely been an interesting journey so far. I would love to see the Jirga session with Hilmand facing Marjan. It is obvious that Marjan is saving it all for the finale but I do feel it’s about time that things move forward & the truth from the past is unveiled. However, the way the writer had added stories within a story is quite interesting & suddenly refreshes the mindset as you’re watching the drama. Atif Aslam & Kubra Khan have created magic on screen as Hilmand & Shehrezaad. Their performances are convincing & strike a chord every single time. The rest of the actors have also performed brilliantly. Sang e Mah continues to be a very impressive drama with strong storytelling & brilliant execution. Sang e Mah Episode 12 & 13 Story Review – The Blame Game

Ohkay so, Sang e Mah continues to be intriguing & gripping, just like how it started. Although the story has definitely come to a standstill; the characters & their perspectives have come to the forefront. It is definitely interesting to witness what each one of them is feeling & going through. The thing that sets Sang e Mah apart is that despite being complex, these characters have been written & translated on screen with so much clarity & finesse that you find understanding them quite easy.

The Blame Game

The members of the Jirga are still in a fix about what should be done considering Haji Marjan is an integral & definitive part of it. However, they also find themselves torn between what should be done because this is the first time their credibility is being questioned by the entire Las Peeran. Their conversations always make an interesting part of the episode because it shows how they are faced with such an issue that they have never witnessed before.

Hilmand was stabbed & once again, it has torn everyone apart. Some are feeling guilty, whereas some are being suspected. In this whole scenario, no one actually knows who is responsible but somehow the blame game has started. Hilmand’s perspective is again clouded by his hatted towards Marjan which makes him think he is behind this attack. Marjan as well as Zarsanga think that Hikmat has done this. It is unfortunate that the moment Hikmat decided to do something for himself, he is being held responsible. It simply goes to show that the transition in Hikmat was definitely not well received by both Marjan & Zarsanga, that is why they have no faith in him & believe he is capable of doing something this grave. Then comes Zarghona, who also felt she played a part in what happened to Hilmand, once again assuming it is only because of Gulmeena that Hikmat decided to kill his own brother.

Badam Gul has always had a soft corner for Mastaan Singh. He has spent years serving Zarghona along with Mastaan. Therefore for him to figure out who was behind the attack was a particularly important development. Badam Gul will definitely do what it takes to protect Mastaan because he of all the people will understand Mastaan’s motive as well as emotions for doing what he did!

Mastaan Singh has spent years & years serving Zarghona, however more than her, he feels strongly for Gulmeena because, during those tough times, she was the only relief he would feel while being tested. Gulmrena has also treated Mastaan with respect & affection, therefore Mastaan couldn’t see her being disgraced like that. Part of it also feels like he wanted to once again prove his loyalty to Zarghona & also compensate for the loss he caused to her. So far Zarghona has at least this part sorted that all of this happened because of Gulmeena but little does she know that it is not exactly what she thinks it is.

Shehrzaad continues to find herself entangled in Marjan’s family affairs. However, it is clear that despite her article being her priority, her focal point now is Hilmand because of the strong feelings she has for him. Shehrzaad has become quite involved in this matter & more so because both Marjan & Zarsanga have given her the confidence to do so. She has yet to learn about Hilmand’s side of the story & then it will be interesting to see what her reaction would be. So far, she truly believes everything that Zarsanga has told her but finding out the other side of the story will be bewildering for her.

I must say, although there are a lot of supporting characters in Sang e Mah, they all get the credit for filling up the scenes with strong performances & screen presence. Be it Awal Khan or Hilmand’s friends, Sabz Ali’s mother, members of the Jirga, or even the servant at Hikmat’s place who gave him a piece of his mind – they all may have a minor role to play in the entire story but their presence is felt & their emotions are also conveyed loud & clear. This highlights the in-depth writing of Sang e Mah as well as the keen eye of the director to put all the characters to good use to tell the story. It has never felt unnecessary or unimportant seeing what all these supporting characters have to say & that adds more to the episode.

Phenomenally Directed

These episodes of Sang e Mah were purely based on the personal struggles, doubts, questions & complexities of all the characters of the story. Some took the front seat whereas a few were in the background however, they all were concerned about one & only Hilmand, who is definitely ruling their lives for now. It is interesting how each one of them has one thing or the other to do with him. I enjoyed seeing Shehrzaad around Hilmand, it was like in this harsh scenario, she brought calm & relief that is missing from Hilmand’s life. He has yet to learn about how she feels but he will also be moved by her & I can not wait to see that. All the actors deserve full points for such brilliant & strong portrayal of all these complex characters. Sang e Mah has been written & directed phenomenally well. Team Sang e Mah definitely should take a bow for bringing a drama like this to our TV screens. I can not wait to see what more do they have in store for us. Sang e Mah Episode 11 Story Review – The Past

Ohkay so, this episode of Sang e Mah didn’t really take the story forward but gave an insight into Zarghona’s past in a lot of detail. However, in general, it did seem like a filler episode with more & less similar situations that have already been covered in the previous episodes. Sang e Mah continues to be interesting so far, but now it is at the stage where every episode must develop the story further & show us how their lives are being impacted by whatever is happening.

The Flashbacks

The main focus remained on the importance of Jirga & how everyone in Las Peeran put Jirga on a pedestal where they always relied on its decisions & took it as the final verdict. It also emphasized that the dwellers of this community have always had strong faith that no matter what happens, the Jirga will always find out a solution & will be fair in their judgment. The flashbacks have shown how Zarghona also was of the same opinion but because she did not agree with Jirga’s decision, she lost faith in it completely. However, before that, she continued to plead & looked forward to it thinking it was the only option for her. I kind of liked that out of everyone, Zarghona had this courage to reject Jirga & its decision on the whole & since then, she has taken everything under her control. This is exactly why after Hilmand’s Gagh, she has never once shown keen interest in Jirga & has not even bothered to wait for it. She has decided that she is perfectly fine with Gulmeena & Hikmat’s marriage, therefore she has no issues proceeding with it.

In this episode, Hikmat actually showed some courage & felt it was high time that he stood up for himself. It is unfortunate that he has been a pushover for as far as he remembers, this is why he knew he had to do something instead of letting others make the decision of his life on his behalf. Hikmat may not be too smart but at least after this interaction with his father, he will feel a little confident that he did what he could & didn’t just sit there allowing Marjan Khan to belittle him like he always does. After the preview last week, I thought Hikmat will turn against Marjan after meeting Hilmand & finding out about his reasons but it seems it was purely personal & had nothing to do with Hilmand’s ill feelings towards Marjan. Also, Hikmat himself is now carrying baggage against Hilmand & it won’t be unlikely if he does something irrational to settle the score. He has already started thinking on those lines, now the time will tell how far Hikmat will go!

As I get to know Zarghona & her story, I feel more for her. She definitely has not had it easy & she is a perfect example of how circumstances toughened her. Awal Khan never truly respected her but on the other hand, Asad ullah actually showered her with love that she deserved. This is exactly why even after so many years, she seems lonely & still mourns his loss. I really find it interesting how in the flashback scenes, there is a vulnerability in Zarghona’s body language & a fear on her face but now, she is a completely different person altogether. It also feels a little selfish on Marjan’s part that he hasn’t cut ties with Awal Khan & has rather appointed him as his assistant to do the dirty work for him. This might be another reason why Zarghona has a bit of resentment towards Marjan. Zarsanga definitely isn’t the victim in this situation as she is making it out to be. She has always been selfish, she displayed it in her matters concerning her sister, therefore I don’t blame Hilmand because Zarsanga may have been emotionally unavailable for him too!

Shehrzaad continues to believe everything that Zarsanga tells her, although she has not really lied to her perspective & way of conveying things definitely makes her look like a victim in front of her. This is why Shehrzaad has a soft corner for Zarsanga & actually feels for her. There is no denying the fact that both Marjan & Zarsanga have been kind to Shehrzaad but their portrayal of facts is a little twisted to strengthen their case. Shehrzaad is still trying to put the pieces together, but she continues to get tangled a bit more. Things are definitely not as simple or easy as they seem to & she will probably learn it the hard way.

I feel we missed out on Mastaan’s reaction after Zarghona freed him. They have shown Harshali & her parent’s reactions but Mastaan hasn’t been given the coverage to show what he has been feeling. He still didn’t warm up to Harshali but it is understandable since he spent almost 20 years turning away from any such emotion that had anything to do with love & warmth.

Sabz Ali & his mother have become somewhat an integral part of the story. He continues to tell everything to Hilmand & his mother does the same. I thoroughly enjoyed her interaction with the members of the Jirga. She actually made a lot of sense when she spoke about the unfair treatment handed out to her son & now Hilmand. This entire situation has definitely put everyone in an awkward position & if they do not do anything, it will weaken their importance in Las Peeran. This is exactly why they all seemed so awkward & tried to beat around the bush because they knew she was right!

Brilliant Direction

This episode of Sang e Mah was a bit slow with some of the conversations & situations seemingly repetitive. I wish to see more interactions of Hilmand & Shehrzaad though. I also found Samiya Mumtaz’s performance a little too dramatic & unconvincing, especially when Zarsanga cries in front of Shehrzaad. Also, I fail to understand why Zarsanga has not once met Hilmand after the incident of Gagh? There has not been a single interaction between the mother & her son. Let’s see when that happens. I will definitely commend Saife Hassan for directing this drama beautifully. I couldn’t help notice how beautiful each shot was, the camera work is brilliant. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Sang e Mah.

Sang e Mah Episode 1 Story Review – A Powerpacked Beginning

Ohkay so, the writing of Mustafa Afridi, the direction of Saife Hassan & the production of Momina Duraid; Sang e Mah began with a bang. The very first episode was enough to promise a gripping storyline with some very interesting & never-seen-before type of characters. The thing I found most noticeable was how the team created a completely different ambiance that didn’t even for a second remind me of Sang e Marmar, although there were so many notable actors who have been a part of both the projects. The first episode set a perfect foundation for what is yet to come & I can not wait to see each of these characters & their journeys.

Cast & Characters

Haji Marjan Khan (Nauman Ejaz) & Zarsanga (Samiya Mumtaz) are parents of Hilmand (Atif Aslam) & Hikmat (Zaviyar Noman). Hikmat being the youngest & probably the well-loved child has a very simple approach & perspective towards life. However, the eldest Hilmand is aloof to the world around him & doesn’t shy away from letting others know where he stands & what his approach is. Marjan being one of the reputable members of the tribe has a say in the matters concerning their tribesmen, whereas the only person he has zero control over happens to be his own son Hilmand. It was interesting to note how both Marjan & Hilmand stood against each other where Marjan found himself losing in front of his son.

Sang e Mah Episode 1 Story Review - A Powerpacked Beginning

Zarghona (Sania Saeed) has denounced her tribe & has been living life her way. She is a single parent of Gulmeena (Hania Amir) who happens to be in love with her cousin Hikmat. Zarghona & her sister Zarsanga are not on talking terms anymore. Although Gulmeena & Hikmat do think they can get married, Zarghona has made it very clear that it can never happen. Hikmat & Gulmeena’s interactions were some of the highlights of this episode which showed how two people in love can not see things any other way. Hikmat’s relationship with his mother was shown beautifully where he always brings out the child in his mother who on the other hand has very staunch views & belief system. Zarghona also has an assistant Badam Gul (Hassan Noman), who obviously will have a very strong role to play in the story. The brief introduction that he got showed that he was capable of so much more & definitely knows his tribe really well.

We also got introduced to Harshali (Najiba Faiz) & her fiance (Omair Rana), they both belong to the Sikh community & despite being engaged for 20 years, they still have not gotten married. Harshali is still waiting for him but he has been involved in self-inflicted punishment where he has turned a blind eye towards any happiness that may come his way. Their introduction was brief but enough to pique interest in what their story is & how it will be linked to the tribe of Marjan Khan.

Sang e Mah Episode 1 Story Review - A Powerpacked Beginning

The first episode also started a conversation about the concept of Gagh, which is deemed punishable in the current times. Gagh is something that a guy does when he likes a girl. He fires bullets outside the vicinity of that girl to let everyone know that she belongs to him & that no one should even think about getting married to her. Currently, Sabz Ali committed Gagh apparently when he was intoxicated & the jirga is now going to decide his fate. I found Zarsangha’s take on this entire matter quite grave & extreme. That was a peek into the kind of person she was & how her mind worked. In the first look, who would’ve thought that Zarsangha could think on such lengths but the things she said related to Gagh not shocked Marjan Khan but also showed that these emotions were erupting from a wound she herself has probably endured. The note at which the episode ended where Hikmat casually spoke about Gagh to claim Gulmeena very clearly laid a foundation of what the future holds for this family.

Well well well, talking about Hilmand Khan; undoubtedly he is going to be a very interesting character to see & explore. The layers that he has were barely touched upon in this episode but were enough to make me look forward to his journey. His dialogues were written beautifully & showed the kind of deep thinker, poetic & philosophical Hilmand was. No wonder why he finds himself detached from the circus around him & finds solace in the silence of the graveyard. While watching this episode & a few scenes of Hilmand, all I could think of was how beautifully this grand character was written just for Atif Aslam. The kind of character Hilmand is, it had to be portrayed by someone with this kind of aura, uniqueness & screen presence. Atif Aslam has portrayed Hilmand effortlessly & I could also see some of his own personality reflected in this character.

Sang e Mah Episode 1 Story Review - A Powerpacked Beginning

Full of Surprises

The first episode of Sang e Mah was full of surprises. I loved seeing Omair Rana & Najiba Faiz in one frame yet again, they both made a lovely pair in Sang e Marmar too. Kubra Khan’s entry as a journalist was a good surprise too. For me, the highlight of this entire episode was the insight that was given into Zarsangha’s character, which was beautifully portrayed by Samiya Mumtaz. The change in her tone, her expressions, the anger & all the emotions that she felt while talking about Sabz Ali who committed Gagh was phenomenal. Nauman Ejaz was mesmerizing with his strong screen presence. I really liked how Zaviyar Noman & Hania Amir created the chemistry of Hikmat & Gulmeena on screen. They both actually looked really nice with each other. Sania Saeed’s aura & screen presence was on another level in this drama as Zarghona. Atif Aslam’s performance was spellbinding & I loved all the dialogues that were written for his character.

Sang e Mah’s very first episode has laid a solid foundation for the rest of the episodes. The Pukhtoon culture was brought to life on screen seamlessly. I actually felt like I was moved into another world where they all existed, it was really powerful. I must commend Hania Amir for doing justice to the Pushto accent throughout the episode. Zaviyar Noman tried his best too & it was a decent effort. No one does Pushto accent like Hassan Noman, that’s a done deal. I think the fact that Atif Aslam decided not to sport an accent gave him a grip over his performance. Considering this was his debut drama & very first on-screen appearance, it was the right decision on his part to not take up the accent which otherwise would’ve limited him from performing to the fullest. I could already see the actors struggling to keep up with the accent, therefore, seeing it not coming from Atif Aslam was a relief, otherwise, it would’ve left the audience distracted too.

The very first episode of Sang e Mah was well-directed. I loved the way they created the ambiance & brought it all to life. I loved Zarghona’s house & its interiors, it was simple but beautiful. It won’t be wrong to say that Atif Aslam was the star of the first episode & the entire cast gave power-packed performances. Production value, attention to detail & the overall execution was top-notch as well. Sang e Mah has had a great start & I can not wait to watch the rest of the drama. Please share your thoughts about the very first episode of Sang e Mah.

Sang e Mah Complete Cast & OST

Sang e Mah

The creators of the super hit drama serial Sang e Marmar have once again joined hands and are bringing yet another mega project to our TV screens. Initially, it was assumed that Sang e Mah was a sequel of the drama serial Sang e Marmar but as the actors associated with the projects got a chance to speak more about the project, they made it clear that it is a stand-alone drama that has nothing to do with Sang e Marmar. However, it won’t be wrong to say that the casting is definitely going to be reminiscent of Sang e Marmar. So far, the takeaway from the promos is that it is going to be a story set in the Pukhtoon tribal area which will revolve around tribal rivalry, politics, and love stories. Sang e Mah has attracted a lot of attention because star-singer Atif Aslam is making his acting debut in this drama. The promos have nothing been short of promising and we can not wait to embark on this journey.
