Parents in Pakistani dramas often play the role of the zalim samaj. Therefore, every once in a while it is great watching characters who break free from this stereotype. Such characters are always likable which do not fit a certain box especially those of the immediate family of the leads. The supporting characters in dramas, in general, play an important role in keeping the viewers engaged. If the leading characters do not have a real relationship with these supporting characters then the entire drama loses its appeal. The parents of the leading characters in Pakistani dramas play a pivotal role. Sometimes these parents are the ones driving the story forward in some of them or the other. Their choices and personalities reflect upon that of their children. It is so important that these relationships and characters should be shown on screen in such a way that their scenes make the viewers feel whatever they are going through.

Even though Najma’s husband has always been against their daughters’ education, she has done everything in her power to make sure that her girls get the education as well as the upbringing that would make them strong and enlightened individuals. The most appealing aspect of this character is that Najma never loses her cool, she has the mental and physical strength to cope with the challenges and she always finds a way out of every difficult situation. Even with minimal resources and absolutely no support, Najma possess resilience and positivity like no other. Her daughters have always been her strength even though her husband tried his best to turn them into her weakness!

Even though Najma herself is constantly busy with household chores, she always encouraged Nasim Zehra when she wanted to play cricket. She is an amazing combination of old school and open-mindedness. This is the reason why she makes the viewers fall in love with every positive character she plays. She is playing the role of a loving and wise single mother in the drama serial Safar Tamam Hua. Her character isn’t flawless since it seems as if she did not give the kind of attention to Jamal which he needed growing up. This is the reason why she puts up with Jamal’s unreasonable behavior every single time. There is a part of her that feels guilty for not raising him right. Also, there have been times when she made certain decisions that were not ideal. However, for the most part, she is an extremely loving person with a big heart. There have been many instances when she could tell the difference between right and wrong instantly. These quick decisions by her made a huge difference in the direction the story was going to go. In the recent episode when Nazo accused Sami of harassing her, she did not believe her and took a stand for Sami.

Unlike many other parents in Pakistani dramas, her character has been written down in such a way that it has different shades and dimensions. Her journey is equally heartening and engaging. Sometimes she is shown struggling to make sane decisions in the midst of all the pressures and against all odds. At other times she takes the best decisions at the right time. Her caring and loving side was evident from the first scene of the play when she was shown worrying about Anoushay and Rija. She is a strong woman with a big heart.

Majeed (Dil Na Umeed Toh Nahi)

Allah Rakhi’s father Majeed in the drama serial Dil Na Umeed Toh Nahi definitely failed his daughter when he gave in to the pressure but even then his love for her was such that he qualifies to be a part of this list. He loved Allah Rakhi dearly, something which was evident right from the first scene of this father-daughter duo together on screen. He always wanted the best for his daughter and it was only due to his upbringing that even after going through so much this young woman did not give up. She fought against all the odds because she had someone like Majeed who raised her. The writer Amna Mufti has made sure that all her characters have some vulnerabilities and flaws. Majeed was always weak and vulnerable because of his financial stature. Even though he was always shown as someone who wanted the best for his daughter, he had to do something entirely different because he was poor and helpless.

This character is the perfect representation of all those poor people who are capable of raising their daughters with love but lack the finances to give them the kind of future they want for them. Even though Majeed toiled hard all his life, he always struggled and his love for Allah Rakhi was always the most special part of his character. The actor playing Majeed’s role definitely deserves tons of credit for giving a worthwhile performance throughout the drama.

Jalal & Zakiya (Aulaad)

Aulaad is one of those rare drama serials which actually revolve around the parents. The actors who have been chosen to play Jalal and Zakiya’s role nailed their characters and made the viewers relate to the ups and downs of their journey. Muhammad Ahmed and Marina Khan have been impressive as Jalal and Zakiya. Both these parents worked really hard to raise their 3 sons and 2 daughters, they are full of love and expect the same love in return. However, their sons let them down repeatedly while their relationship with their daughters kept them going. Jalal has made many decisions which we do not necessarily agree with but through this character, the writer has shown the viewers that parents should not have so many expectations from the children and should save something for their own future too. Zakiya is definitely the less impulsive character who most often does damage control where necessary. Their relationship with their special needs daughter gave representation to all such parents who struggle behind closed doors but at the same time have so much love to give to their children.

The unconditional love Zakiya and Jalal had for their children for the longest time made them the best parents. Even now their attitude towards their sons is completely justified.

Nargis (Pehli Si Mohabbat)

Pehli Si Mohabbat is breaking stereotypes in more ways than one which is why Nargis is not like all the other parents on this list. She is a much younger stepmother who doesn’t come from the ‘ideal’ background yet she has impressed the viewers more than once. Nargis is fierce and sensitive which is a rare combination. Rakhshi took her time warming up to his stepmother but once this bond was developed, it was unbreakable. The practical and fair side of Nargis’ personality makes her the best and the wisest parent on this list. She supported Rakhshi until she knew that her love story stood no chance against her father’s will. Apart from that, she keeps on giving Faiz Ullah reality checks, saying things that Rakhshi does not have the courage to say to her father. Nargis is a strong woman who is also sensitive and intelligent. Her character is appealing and as a mother, she is doing better than most mothers in Pakistani dramas.

Usually, in Pakistani dramas, stepmothers are shown in a negative light but Pehli Si Mohabbat shows how this stepmother has been a mentor and a friend to Rakhshi. Rabia Butt’s powerful performance has made this character even more appealing.

Moosa’s Mother (Raqs-e-Bismil)

Moosa’s mother in Raqs-e-Bismil is not a central character and perhaps did not even get as much screen time as some of the other parents on this list but she definitely left an impact because of her love for her son. She made the mistake of telling Zohra not to marry Moosa but she has always pleaded his case otherwise. Moosa and his mother’s scenes together at one point were the most emotional scenes. It is unfortunate that her character took a backseat in many of the recent episodes but every time she makes an appearance you feel for her. She pleads Moosa’s case even though she knows she won’t be heard and her love for her son is unconditional. That is why it was rather unfortunate that this character was relegated to the background. Her relationship with Moosa was so heart-warming throughout until the unexplained disconnect in between! Nida Mumtaz has played many memorable characters and this one is certainly one of them.

Many popular dramas on air right now have some scenarios which are impossible to relate to. Even though most of these dramas provide quality entertainment but there is something or the other which irks the viewers. These illogical scenarios make the viewers wonder why the writer who otherwise wrote a good script, added something so illogical. Such situations and scenarios make it difficult for viewers to relate to them.

There is a lot more pressure today on the drama writers than before. They are expected to write dramas with more than 20 episodes and they have to write often! This definitely hampers their creativity and at times their reasoning.

Here are some of the most illogical situations from the top recent Pakistani dramas.

Ruswai

Ruswai is a popular drama serial which deals with the serious issue of rape, well at least that is how it started! Ruswai started off really well and the main protagonist Sameera was introduced as a strong and intelligent young woman. As the story progressed, the writer completely lost track and the entire story focused mainly on Sameera blaming her doting father for her kidnapping and rape. The way Sameera kept on blaming her father and how she treated him after the tragedy shifted the focus from everything else and made Sameera’s character annoying. This was the most illogical and annoying part of the drama for weeks.

Watching her take out her anger on the father who always loved her made absolutely no sense. Now that her father has died, she is left with nothing but remorse. And as if this was not enough, somehow Sameera’s intelligent brother too completely missed how Sameera’s attitude hurt their father. The heroine who had so much going for her was conveniently turned into a monster who indirectly is responsible for her father’s death! She continues to be so ‘understanding’ when it comes to her bhabhi Warda but never paused to understand her father. The writer definitely did not let sense prevail and perhaps took this route to make the viewers feel for Sameera’s father. Weren’t the viewers supposed to feel for the victim and not her father?

Yeh Dil Mera

Yeh Dil Mera is a thriller/mystery drama which is keeping the viewers engaged and entertained. Yeh Dil Mera is a story of revenge and it revolves around the main protagonists Amaan and Ana. The most illogical situations of this drama also center around these two characters. Even though there have been a lot of editing glitches in the play but the glaring flaws are more obvious than anything else. The most unconvincing scenario was Amaan surviving the killings without the knowledge of Mir Farooq. The writer gave an explanation for this and informed her fans that the director was responsible for this glitch. There is more, Mir Farooq’s transition from an over-protective father to one who was more than willing to let go of his daughter made little sense.

A criminal minded person like Mir Farooq who does not even trust his own wife and lives by the rule that no one should be trusted, did not even do a background check on the man with whom his daughter who was already mentally disturbed was going to spend the rest of her life! Ana’s relationship with her father and everyone in her house after her marriage has been the most illogical part of the drama. People move on after they lose someone but in this drama, the father and daughter have literally moved on after Ana got married. Why couldn’t the writer show a normal, functioning father-daughter relationship between these two after Ana’s marriage? Bua’s disappearance too has been a joke. Everyone needs Amaan to tell them there is something fishy going on!

Jhooti

Jhooti is another popular play on air right now which has been illogical right from the first episode. The writer has relied wholly on the black and white characters. Nasir is not just all white but his character has to be the most illogical one we have ever seen in Pakistani dramas. The way Nirma asks for his shop to be transferred in her name and everyone is more than okay with it was the first indication that this drama was going to show many illogical scenarios.

After that one after the other, the viewers have been watching Nirma playing havoc after her marriage and putting forward the most unreasonable demands yet her husband takes being joru ka ghulam to a whole new level. Perhaps the writer took inspiration from drama serial Dillagi but surely Nirma is not Anmol and Nasir is nowhere near Mohid! The way no one in Nasir’s family saw through the most transparent vamp/heroine ever, has been the most illogical element of the drama throughout.

Ishqiya

Ishqiya recently started and it is being watched by many viewers. Although for the most part drama serial Ishqiya has been written well but this drama too has one main illogical situation so far which is hard to digest. Romaissa has been shown as a happy go lucky young woman but she is also wise and sensitive. Yet for the past few weeks her sister Hamnah has been going through hell and she has not been trying to hide it, yet Romaissa has not once even asked her why she is so depressed. It is also quite obvious that Hamnah was never interested in getting married yet that is also something which has been ignored by her family somehow.

The way Hamnah got married in a rush and no one can see what she is going through has been the most illogical scenario which makes even Romaissa’s character unconvincing.

Villains are as important to a story as a hero if not more so. Any drama, film or short film is as interesting as the negative character which forces the hero to make choices and propels the story forward. Pakistani dramas also largely depend upon negative characters and many of our stars have admitted that playing a negative character allowed them to showcase their real talent and that is where they had the margin to shine. Each season comes with its own fair share of hated characters and we have a list for this season’s most hated characters from Pakistani dramas:

Arham From Hasrat

Arham’s character was weak, lacked even basic moral values and still ended up as a winner in a fight between women that he was solely responsible for. Fahad Sheikh played Arham in Hasrat brilliantly. The viewers were hating on all his actions and the way he was seen treating his very loyal wife and then later on his second wife was painful to watch at times. Arham represented the common man of our society who always gets away with what he has done while women are left behind to pick up the slack. The ending of Arham also made people furious as he was not punished for his deeds and got the best of both worlds.

Fabiha From Hasrat

Fabiha is another character from Hasrat which was played by Janice Tessa. Fabiha’s circumstances and her justifications for her character were understandable but no one can feel sympathy for a woman who is going after a married man. The way she got married to Arhma and then kept scheming against Sanaya made the public’s blood boil. Janice did a geat job with Fabiha and though her ending was stupid and unjust, people still did not like her in Hasrat.

Jameel From Radd

Jameel is played by Paras Masroor in Radd. Paras is a great actor as he has established that through his work in Sang e Mar Mar but he keeps getting typecast in roles as Jameel and well, he is good in them too. Jameel is the brother-in-law from hell in Radd. The way he has schemed and conducted himself is being hated by everyone. He somehow gets away unscathed from every controversy he starts and he is the worst husband to Savera which makes people hate him even more.

Aslam From Jaan Nisar

Aslam is played by Sajid Hasan in Jaan Nisar. Aslam is the protagonist Dua’s father and he is one of the worst characters on television right now. He is constantly yapping about what a disaster daughters are. He is not supporting one daughter who is getting abused while he threw out the other who ended up at a brothel. He is also sort of characterless personally and there are no positives about Aslam from Jaan Nisar. He is definitely one of the most hated characters right now.

Kashmala From Jaan Nisar

Kashmala is played by Hiba Ali Khan. Kashmala is the protagonist’s ex-sister-in-law as well as his current first wife. Her character is getting backlash as she is scheming to keep Dua and Nosherwan Ghaznawi played by fan favourites Danish Taimoor and Hiba Bukhari apart but one of the most imprtant reasons for the hate Kashmala is getting is for the way the character is written. Her obsession with Nosherwan and how she is always so desperate makes her stupid, too negative and people dislike watching it.

Sultan From Shiddat

Sultan is played by Muneeb Butt in the drama Shiddat. Though Sultan’s extremism and torture streak has a reason stemming from his abusive childhood, people simply hate this character for all it has done. Sultan not being redeemable is basically a win for Muneeb Butt because that is how it should have been perceived given the toxicity of the character. Shiddat gets a spot on the list with Sultan.

Noor Jahan From Noor Jahan

Noor Jahan is played by Saba Hameed in Noor Jahan. She is a controlling and conniving woman who likes to rule her kingdom with an iron fist. She operates her sons like puppets and takes every decision of their lives. What makes her hated is not just the control that she exercises over her sons and daughters-in-law but her aversion to having daughters makes her evil of the evil. The way she was happy about losing her first granddaughter to a miscarriage was menacing and made everyone hate her.

Hunaid From Noor Jahan

Hunaid is played by Noor Hassan and he is the eldest son of Noor Jahan. He is nearly as toxic as his mother and the way he treats his wife makes everyone’s blood boil. His constant Amma Amma is irritating to watch and the character has been performed well. Unfortunately his abusive behaviour towards his wife and the way he reacted to losing his daughter made people put him on their hate list. He also has no sense of boundaries and keeps crossing them with his brothers and now sister-in-law Noor Bano.

Safeer From Noor Jahan

Safeer from Noor Jahan is played by Ali Rehman Khan. He is the second son and a person with no spine. He has destroyed two lives just because he did not have the guts to stand up for himself. Safeer not only betrayed Zoya twice, he is now betraying Sumbul once again and he is happy with her demeanor as his persoanl slave and not a wife who is an equal life partner.

Adeel From Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum

Adeel in Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum is played by Emaad Irfani. He is insecure and shallow and he cannot stand by his word. He is also super greedy and did not handle the situation in the correct manner. People already hate his price-tag yapping personality and he will soon be joined by a toxic and stubborn wife to push him further. By jilting Sharjeena at the altar, he is definitely being hated these days.

Pakistani dramas just like any other fictional piece of writing bank on different kinds of characters. While we get to watch many intelligently written characters, there are also those characters that are simply foolish. Most often the foolishness of these characters is used by the writers in order to create situations that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. Some of these characters are fools in love which makes sense. When people are blinded by someone’s love and are fooled by them, it is understandable. But when these people go out of their way to jump in a ditch, the foolishness is forced and unnecessary. When there are logical grounds, background, and reasons why viewers would give this character the benefit of the doubt then such foolishness is a well-integrated part of the storyline. However, when this foolishness is the primary personality trait of a character then it becomes a convenient way for the writer to take the story forward.

Such unexplained and limitless foolishness makes it difficult for the viewers to feel for a character even when they are the ones who are being victimized as a consequence. These characters often ignore the warning signs and get themselves involved in situations that are unpleasant. Most of these characters are most often shown as educated and intelligent humans but when it comes to a certain relationship or some decisions their folly knows no bounds.

Asim – Uraan

Asim from Uraan tops this list for many reasons; an otherwise intelligent man who somehow turns into a complete fool when it comes to gauging how Maleka actually feels about him. It seems like after Mere Pass Tum Ho aired, our production houses are going out of their way to show the bechargi of men. Since Maleka has been shown as the selfish one therefore Asim is a complete contrast to her. Had he been a fool in love it would have made sense but he is a confident fool, who believes every lie he tells himself. He is an intelligent man otherwise who has certain goals in life but he consciously does things repeatedly which gives Maleka the perfect opportunities to insult him. Although he knows Maleka is materialistic, he keeps on bringing gifts for her which she would never appreciate. His biggest foolishness was going ahead with the marriage even though Maleka had shown her hatred for him more than once.

Asim literally did everything in his power to put himself in the situation he is in at the moment yet after finding out the truth he is in shock and distressed. It is because of his foolishness that it is impossible to feel for this character. He is not only Allah miyan ki gaye but also the perfect qurbani ka bakra so willingly ready to be butchered!

Harris – Sabaat

Harris has really good credentials on paper; he is a psychiatrist and a counselor who has the aim of bringing about a change through his profession. He is also a self-made man who has gone through difficult times during his childhood and is now looking for a peaceful life with someone who would bring stability and happiness to his life. You would not expect a character with his qualifications and experience to make a foolish decision but he totally took the viewers by surprise when he made one such decision when he proposed Miraal. That alone was enough to make Harris qualify for this list but his foolishness did not stop there. Harris suggested that having a child would put an end to the lack of understanding between him and Miraal. This kind of immature advice sounded even more foolish coming from someone whose own childhood was ruined because his parents did not get along. If marriages really saved marriages, why couldn’t he save his parents’ marriage? Harris is such a fool that he cannot even put two and two together.

Harris’ foolishness and even stupidity reached an all-time high when he decided to lie to Miraal so that he could continue working. While Miraal is equally crazy but she is clever enough to hide those things from Harris which she does not want him to know. What makes Harris’ character even more foolish is that even after realizing just how negative and controlling Miraal is, he does not see that as a problem! We are guessing that Harris’ foolishness will continue as the story progresses.

Jahangir’s Mother – Nand

Jahangir’s mother in Nand for the longest time was one of the most likable characters in the drama. She was shown as a nice and simple woman who wanted her son to be happy. There were definitely times when she put up with a lot more than she should have but none of her decisions or actions could ever be termed as foolish. She never put herself or her son in harm’s way because of her decisions therefore the viewers liked her sweetness and non-confrontational stance. Unfortunately, the writer in an attempt to stretch the story turned her into a gullible fool as soon as Gohar came back. Even though she had realized just how evil Gohar was and had promised Rabi that she will support her, she instantly changed her mind the second Gohar shed a few tears. Her foolishness did not end there, she continued to believe every single lie Gohar told her and expected Rabi to compromise. Watching a grown woman who has so much experience, act like such a fool has been frustrating.

This character is even more foolish because it is crystal clear that the writer has turned her into a fool just so that Jahangir cannot leave Gohar. Gohar’s presence in the house gives more screen time to the character and will make a bigger victim out of Rabi. Without the help of this intensely foolish character, all of this wouldn’t have been possible.

Mahi – Tera Ghum aur Hum

Mahi was introduced as someone who was a little too simple but in the past few weeks in particular she has been acting like a complete fool.
