Pakistani dramas have gained a huge popularity and viewership over the years. Not only this, the local dramas have paved their ways towards a bigger international market with its viewership in most of the countries including Nepal, India, Bangladesh and Arab region. The dramas have won over the international audience because of the quality content but now the game is changing as the drama makers now create more of bold, obscene, controversial and insensitive dramas in order to grab the viewer ship. Pakistani Morning Shows are famous for producing entertainment oriented content to grab a certain kind of viewership and rating. We often saw big anchors like Shaista Lodhi, Nida Yasir, Faysal Quraishi & Sanam Jung admitting the fact that they have to do all the cringe-worthy shows because of Channels’ demand.
The channels sometimes cross the limits in the race of TRP, similar kind of event happened in Juggan Kazim’s newly started morning show where she invited couples, she hung up apples and the couples were given a weird task to eat those apple, while Ali Zafar’s song Mela Loot Lia was playing in the background.
Netizens didn’t like the cringe-worthy clip, also from far, it seemed that the couples were involved in some kind of public display of affection which was giving a bad idea.
Juggan herself was laughing at the content, fans said to the couples to atleast keep the faces in front of camera otherwise it’s looking as the couples are involved in some kind of PDA. A Singapore-based Pakistan named Azzah Waseem is all set to establish ‘Fun Aur Funkaar’, a seven-day festival that showcases Pakistani food, art, music and fashion, reported by TheStraits Times.
Azzah is 37 old who is the managing director of an events company by the name of Momentz by Azzah.
“The positive sides of Pakistan are not presented as much as the negative. It’s high time we showcase how rich our art, culture and talent are.”
The festival will start on Friday with a concert by Josh at the Magic Carpet Lounge.
On Sunday, at Aryaa Kitchen on Beach Road, a journey of the taste of Pakistani food will begin.
Each day will feature different dishes from Punjab, Sindh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P).
‘Fun Aur Funkaar’ will close with a fashion show featuring bridals and formal collections by popular Pakistani designer Rana Noman and baubles by Singapore- based jewellery designer Tanya Farooq.
Mikaal Zulfiqar, a Pakistani actor, will be present for a meet-and- greet.
Azzah claims the festival is not just for Pakistanis in Singapore but for Singaporeans as well.
“People know little about Pakistan here. So this festival is an opportunity for them to learn more, whether through its food, art, music or fashion,” she says.
She plans to make ‘Fun Aur Funkaar’ an annual affair and eventually include Bangladesh and Sri Lanka too.
Nowadays the star cast is not confided to dramas and films alone but even the brands are setting the bar high by making sure that their products are endorsed by those stars who have a massive fan following. Not only this the commercial nowadays are very detailed in which we see stars performing on songs or in this case an entire day in the life of a few stars who are bikers in this commercial.
Servis Tyres new TVC is grand because it has some of the top stars in it. Danish Taimoor, Hamza Ali Abbasi and Shaan Shahid endorse the product by being part of this commercial. As if this was not enough, the song for this commercial has been sung by the very famous Ali Zafar. All the stars involved in the commercial had been posting BTS pictures of it for few days without revealing what kind of a project it was. Many people thought that this was going to be another film but the suspense was broken with the commercial came out.
Hum TV left no stone unturned to ensure that the Servis 4th Hum Awards were the most grand of all the awards they have organized so far. The organizers raised the bar high last year and now it seems like it is only going to get higher with every passing year. Last year these awards covered only dramas but this time around there was a special category for films and the directors talked about Hum Films’ plans to add to the revival of Pakistani cinema. Almost all the prominent and new faces of the entertainment world especially the world of drama were seen on the award show and on the stage as well.
I would like to discuss the highs and lows of this award show by highlighting different aspects of the show one by one. Also, please keep in mind that this article attempts to discuss the award function and not the nominations or the awards.
The Hosts:
The show was opened by Hamza Ali Abbasi and Ayesha Khan. It wasn’t the perfect beginning because although Hamza Ali Abbasi is a great speaker and he has a nice voice but he needs to lighten up. Hamza’s body language in particular made this start too serious and not entertaining enough. Also, Hamza’s reply to Feroze Khan when he said that he could never think of competing with Hamza was in bad taste! Hosting isn’t just about reading out your script but also adding some life to the evening. Ayesha Khan’s more-American-than-the-actual-Americans accent and lack of spontaneity definitely did not help kick start the show. These two hosts were much better later on once they were on the stage for a while.
Vasay Chaudhry and Ahmed Ali Butt’s entry changed the mood of this show altogether. The lyrics of the song they sang and performed on were witty and relevant to the show. Also their performance was top-notch. They brought with them the spontaneity and wit which was lacking in the show. It cannot be easy being on the stage with such a big responsibility on your shoulders but these two makes it look like a piece of cake. Ahmed Ali Butt in particular is truly gifted.
Sanam Jung hosted part of the show with Hamza Ali Abbasi and Vasay Chaudhry. Sanam Jung was confident, articulate and definitely much better than some of her co-hosts. She did not shake for a single second even and was definitely not on a mission to impress anyone with her English accent!
Vasay Chaudhry, Ahmed Ali Butt and Sanam Jung did their job well and made these award shows fun to watch.
The Stage And The Script:
The stage was perfect in every way. Whoever was in charge of the stage did complete justice to the task assigned to them. Every time there was a new performance the background changed and it looked beautiful.
This time around there was plenty of Urdu in between too unlike the last time when the entire script was in English. Ahmed Ali Butt and Vasay Chaudhry mentioned in the beginning that some people got offended last time therefore they kept the personal jokes to the minimum and focused more on general things like the excessive rona dhona in our dramas and different reasons why people watch these dramas etc.
The introduction part in the beginning of the show however was less than average, there was more focus on rhyming and less on briefly asserting the importance of these awards. Unlike the last time the most important awards were not introduced very eloquently.
The Dance Performances:
I have to say that after I was finally done watching the award show I felt like I had just watched a dance competition! There were too many dances in the show, some of which were truly impressive without any doubt. The costumes, set and choreography was spot on but why do we continue to be fixated with Indian songs? Honestly speaking, it was shocking to see so many dance performances on Indian songs at a time when we are all raving about the growth of Pakistani film industry. If all these producers and directors are so impressed by the growth of the Pakistani film industry then why do they choose Indian songs for these performances?
Atif Aslam’s performance was impressive but was he singing live or just lip syncing?
Few Suggestions
I was very tempted to give a few suggestions after watching this award show. A lot of hard work went into organizing this grand ceremony – something which I truly appreciate and acknowledge but if our organizers pay a little more attention to few things here and there then they can truly give these award shows a more ‘made in Pakistan’ feel.
Pakistan is blessed with some amazing writers and our actors who hosted this show are very good at speaking Urdu therefore it would be nice to ask one of these writers to write the script which I am certain even Ayesha Khan can read and deliver without any hindrances!! I hate to say this but there were times when I felt like some actors were trying to prove their accent was more ‘English / American’ than others!
Personally, I would much rather watch an award show with absolutely no dance performances but since that is inevitable, it would be nice if the organizers put in some effort to make medleys of OSTs instead of live performances in which yet again mostly songs that are sung are Indian and recorded. Also, Pakistani films have plenty of dance number therefore these songs can easily be used for the dance performances. Dancing on Indian songs sends out the wrong message – as if we don’t have any good songs of our own! If we use our own songs, that will encourage the composers and the singers as well and give the show a more Pakistani feel.
This award show function was thoroughly entertaining especially Ahmed Ali Butt and Vasay Chaudhry were hilarious but it was too long. I couldn’t help but wonder how the guests managed to sit and watch it for that long. I suggest separate award shows for dramas and films next year, I am certain that Hum TV can do that. I would like to thank all those people who put in so much effort and time into organizing this show and request them to implement some of the suggestions mentioned above next time.
The best thing about watching this show was seeing all these fabulously talented people under one roof being recognized and appreciated – they truly deserve it!

The recently held HUM Awards were significant for many reasons. HUM completed its ten years therefore these awards were bound to more extravagant than the past two awards and HUM stepped into filmmaking too this year therefore there was more of a reason to put in an extra effort to gain the attention of the International viewers as well so that HUM could broaden its horizons further.
HUM TV has always maintained a very high standard in drama making although recently HUM does not have dramas like Dastan, Durr-e-Shahwar or Hamsafar to its credit but the loyal viewers still find a reason to tune into HUM. This year HUM had a few notable dramas which caught the attention of the viewers but there wasn’t one play which you could say won the audience in a way that would have made history.
The great thing about HUM Awards is that it is an absolute delight to watch all the stars of the television industry in particular sitting under one roof and it is good to see these stars who put in a great deal of effort to entertain us being rewarded. Here are my thoughts on HUM TV’s Award show:
The Hosts:
The show was opened by Hamza Ali Abbasi and Sanam Jung, unlike last year we did not see Meekaal Zulfiqar on stage this time. Hamza Ali Abbasi quite clearly took the lead when these two were on stage but both of them were reading out of the cards they were holding. Hamza Ali Abbasi and Sanam Jung were confident hosts and they did their job well but they were obviously expected to stick to the script.
Sanam Saeed also hosted the show for a while without any “help” from a co-host at first and later on with Hamza Ali Abbasi. Sanam’s trembling voice along with a few mistakes in reading Urdu here and there definitely made her a very shaky host.
When it came to hosting the evening belonged to Vasay Chaudhry and Ahmed Ali Butt, the HSY gig might have been slightly OTT but overall they were fun, witty, spontaneous and like someone else also remarked they could easily pass for the best on-screen couple!!! The obsession with Hamayun Saeed’s “love life” was slightly annoying and seemed repetitive in the beginning but as the evening drew to a close the reason behind that particular joke was revealed in the form of a beautiful trailer of the upcoming film “Bin Royee”
The Stage and The Script:
The stage was beautifully designed and the addition of the big screen at the back was phenomenal. The beautiful way in which tribute was paid to performers who were being given special awards was very impressive; whoever wrote those lines of appreciation did complete justice to all the actors and writers.
The Crowd
The crowd was full of energy which added to the very lively feel this whole evening had. You got the feeling that all these people were there to cheer for each other and not in competition. Ayesha Omer’s lack of interest and cheer however when Mehwish Hayat was performing went to show that these two might not be on good terms (just a hunch!!)
The Dance Performances
Personally, I am not a big fan of these dance performances at all since I think that they take that Pakistani Award Show feel away from these award shows because for some odd reason all the songs that our celebrities dance on are Indian. I would happily watch a show without dance performances but since they seem to be a necessary evil then why not add at least 2 or 3 Pakistani songs in the show too if sticking to Pakistani songs alone is not possible.
If we look at it neutrally the dance performances were very well choreographed; Ahsan Khan, Feroz Khan, Shehroz Sabzwari and Saba Qamar in particular were spot on. Mehwish Hayat’s performance was a little too sizzling for my liking, Sajjal Ali and Syra Shehroz failed to give coordinated moves even. Sajjal Ali’s red pants were very distracting and her whole “costume” stood out like a sore thumb. My personal favorite was the very first performance at the opening of the show which was less of nach gana and had a more artistic feel to it.
HUM has contributed a great deal to our drama industry, it has also added new trends to our fashion industry and is now venturing into films so why not do their bit to promote Pakistani music too by adding Pakistani songs to these award shows. Sure, people listen to Indian songs but Pakistani music I believe has a lot more to offer. I am not a big fan of Indian music and firmly believe that Pakistani music is far better and superior than that from across the border. We have so many classics by Sajjad Ali and others which are catchy and fun and can be used for these performances. Also, songs from recent Pakistani films should be promoted through such shows.
I couldn’t help but notice that some actors felt like they were obligated to speak English even when they were not very comfortable speaking it. Danish Taimoor and Imran Aslam were two such people who I am sure could have expressed their feelings with much more precision and confidence if they decided to speak in Urdu.
Overall, the HUM Awards were a labour of love; very well put together indeed but next time we would all like to see Pakistani music being promoted on this forum since these awards pay tribute to everything that is Pakistani. The day that happens it will be a very proud moment for all of us…..what better way to say “Pakistan Zindabad!”

Pakistani singer Ali Noor, the lead vocalist of the Noori band, started trending late Friday after Pakistani journalist Ayesha Binte Rashid accused him of sexual harassment. Ayesha took to Instagram on Friday to reveal photos of an alleged WhatsApp chat she had with the artist in which she accused him of being a predator, The chat read, “You emotionally manipulated me and what happened in the back of my car while driving to the airport was sexual harassment. You’re a sexual harasser and a predator.“
She also mentioned that she also ended her relationship with her drummer friend, as she did not want to be friends with anyone who supported or even stood by the harasser. The chat between the two showed that the duo had an old acquaintance but Ayesha raised objections after the ‘singer’s attitude towards Ayesha turned inappropriate’. The screenshots also include alleged replies from a musician, seemingly sent to her via his wife’s phone number after Ayesha blocked him.
The authenticity of the messages remains to be ascertained; however, Ali Noor has since taken to his personal Instagram account to talk about the allegations in a letter addressed to his ‘Nano’, in which he claims that Ayesha hasn’t shared all of his replies to her. “Today, I put the teaser and release date of the video and the son but as I was doing that, I got a message from newspapers that I have been accused of #MeToo by Ayesha Binte and my screenshots and apologies have been put up. She didn’t put all of them and that’s sad.” “You also know that I am not a sexual predator but clearly this direction of the life of mine could turn me into that and worse and My God I am so scared. Your message is the hardest hit I have ever had in my… I’ve truly lost my innocence and I will have to read it for the rest of my life and live with it, what have I done?” he added.
He goes on to add, “I even suggested I should be hanged and executed publicly. She simply wasn’t taking me seriously. Anyway, I am so glad she finally put it out. All I can say is that my life has taken a turn that I never could imagine and your message is truly a sign from God for me to see my truth. And yes, I am paying a very hefty price for my ego, my God complex… I have never been this miserable and yes you are right my inability to change myself is dawning as true reality.” Ayesha, I am truly your gunehgaar. You are definitely one of the most sincere, real and genuine people I know. You know the truth is I had completely blocked this from my mind …which only goes to show how [expletive] up I am.”
“Your innocence and honesty were the most adorable thing on the trip and man what did I do. I am taking full responsibility, both publicly and privately. Whatever your decision for punishment is, I will not dare to talk of my good or not so bad intentions here but if you check with your heart, you might find some space for my folly, I have to make this right. Tell the whole world to get me arrested, hanged, but please don’t hate me,” his message allegedly concluded. Following his earlier reaction in the form of the letter addressed to his ‘Nano’, Noor shared yet another post on his Instagram story saying, “This is no PR ploy to promote a new single. This is serious [expletive] and will have to be addressed… I don’t mind being called the worst person on Earth… but people around me are getting concerned and hurt and I hate to cause strife to anyone including Ayesha.”

Serial Killer is the newest addition to the latest trend in Pakistani television of showing crime stories. This genre brings a refreshing change to traditional Pakistani dramas, signaling a willingness among producers to explore new territories. While some of these recent crime series may not have met expectations, the overall experimentation in this realm is commendable. Serial Killer is a promising example, that each new series surpasses its predecessor in quality. While all the other crime series we have watched till now revolved around a single murder case, Serial Killer takes a distinctive approach by weaving a narrative around a serial killer. This shift significantly broadens the scope of the story, offering viewers a more expansive and intricate plot to unravel. Also, it is truly delightful witnessing female characters in Pakistani dramas challenging stereotypes. These characters offer a fresh identity to the skilled actresses embodying these roles.
Serial Killer transcends the conventional crime and investigation plotlines by placing a strong emphasis on the human element of the characters. This deliberate focus on character depth adds a unique dimension to the series, ensuring that it resonates with the viewers. Saba Qamar’s stellar performance stands out brilliantly in the series. Her apt portrayal of SP Sarah Sikandar, a committed police official grappling with a haunting past adds layers to her character and makes it easier for the viewers to relate to the human aspect of the character. Furthermore, it is also good to see Daniyal Raheel’s return to the screen, portraying a character that provides a welcome departure from the typical male leads seen in Pakistani dramas. Shahzain embodies all the fine qualities that viewers seek in a leading man.
Umera Ahmed’s script brilliantly captures the mystery aspect of this crime series. The narrative holds significant strengths, standing out from recent crime series by showcasing the writer’s imaginative prowess to the fullest, providing viewers with much to anticipate. What sets this drama apart is its ability to keep the audience guessing about the perpetrator. Also, the writer wisely avoids excessive reliance on dark details, maintaining a serious yet light-hearted tone throughout the series. The script adeptly sheds light on the casual attitude of the police officers, a recurring but unfortunate reality. In doing so, the writer exposes the flaws within the system that often enable perpetrators to escape justice. While similar portrayals have been seen in recent crime series and Jhok Sarkar, Umera Ahmed’s perspective stands out due to her nuanced approach. Unlike others, she delves into the small details, providing viewers with insights into where the system falters. The narrative not only paints the broader picture but also meticulously focuses on the intricate aspects of the issue.
The director Fahad Noor deserves credit as well, who carefully crafted each scene with precision, enhancing the overall viewing experience of the series. From the locations to the camera work, every aspect contributes to a superior feel in each scene. Except for the dim lighting in Sarah’s office and some other police station offices, everything else is executed flawlessly. There are moments when the subdued lighting raises questions about how Sarah manages to focus with such limited light. Because of this dim lighting throughout, a few of the scenes shot outside with proper daylight are a relief!
Saba Qamar is well-known for her exceptional body of work and yet again she delivers a standout performance in Serial Killer, arguably one of her finest. One of my favorite parts of this track is Sarah’s profound connection with those she holds dear. These connections serve as a captivating focal point, adding depth and emotional resonance to the track. Daniyal Raheel and Saba Qamar’s on-screen chemistry makes their track the highlight of this track.
Ahmed Randhawa skillfully embodies his role as Inspector Sarfraz, elevating it to a significant supporting character that stands out. Another noteworthy supporting character is DSP Mehboob, portrayed exceptionally by Fahad Hashmi, showcasing his considerable talent. Also, it is a true delight to witness the talented Faiza Gillani receiving multiple opportunities to showcase her acting skills in various current dramas. In this particular series, she adeptly brings Barbara’s character to life on screen. Shahnawaz Zaidi is also the perfect choice for playing a role that is likable on so many levels. The actor playing Eman’s role deserves praise for his outstanding performance.
Serial Killer maintains impeccable sound quality, utilizes background scores effectively, delivers outstanding performances, and exhibits precise camerawork. However, there is a noticeable drawback when it comes to lighting, which occasionally becomes strenuous on the eyes. The story unfolds at a steady and measured pace, providing the storyline with a seamless and smooth flow. Also, the plot is rich in substance, and what stands out is the absence of any overt or forced attempts to captivate the viewers. The absence of desperate measures to grab attention speaks to the confidence in the narrative’s inherent strength, allowing it to unfold naturally and keep the viewers hooked through its substance rather than the regular commercial tactics.

The drama is written by none other than Umera Ahmed and it is directed by Fahad Noor. Sequel to popular shows has become a trend in the past few years. But the question is, is it always a good idea to try to extend a masterpiece? A lot of audiences want to see their favorite characters on screen again and want to know more about the story but to have the same expectations from the sequel as the original show is an unrealistic expectation as a master piece cannot be recreated. Sequels are often good and enjoyable to watch and have their own charm but the expectations from audiences are too high and the sequel mostly disappoints the viewers. But I must say, some sequels are really pathetic and manages to ruin the original story too. Here is the list of a few shows with sequels:
The Baraat Series:
The popular Baraat series started with ‘Azhar Ki Ayegi Baraat’ which featured Sarwat Gilani and Hasan Niazi as the leads and the cast had wonderful actors such as Bushra Ansari, Saba Hameed, Javed Sheikh, Samina Ahmad, Sana Askari, Shehryar Zaidi, Natasha Ali, Rahael Butt, Ali Safina and Uroosa Siddiqui. The story was very refreshing and the right touch of humor by Bushra Ansari in addition to the beautiful direction by Marina Khan turned it into a hit show. The second series in the Baraat installment was ‘Dolly Ki Ayegi Baraat’ which was again appreciated by audiences. The show maintained its charm till the second installment but the third show in this installment ‘Takkay Ki Ayegi Baraat’ seemed forced and dragged and the show started to lose its charm. Last year, we saw a fourth installment ‘Dolly Ki Ayegi Baraat’ which was entertaining in its own way but was no match for its previous installments. However, the concept of this show and Bushra Ansari’s character has managed to uplift every season and has made the audiences laugh. Now let’s see if we get to see a fourth installment this year!
Mera Saeein:
This show was another hit which had a sequel which we got to see last year. The original drama included names like Nouman Ejaz, Sawera Nadeem, Amna Sheikh, and Sunita Marshal. The story was again different with a negative character as the main lead and the show managed to impress the audiences with its different concept. Mera Saeein 2 was then produced as a sequel to this show which was much more glamorous than its first installment. It had an impressive cast which included names like Fahad Mustafa, Mahnoor Baloch, Ayeza Khan, Anoushay Abbasi, Waseem Abbas, and Zyla Sarhadi. Now the question is what went wrong?
In the process of making the show interesting and full of suspense, they ended up ruining the story. There was no concrete story but senseless twist and turns in every episode which seemed pointless at times. Fahad Mustafa gave an astounding performance and it was the first time I saw him in a proper negative role and he completely nailed it! He was the only reason why I saw the show as the story had become completely senseless after a few episodes.
Kis Din Mera Vyah Howay Ga:
This is another show which became a hit when the first season went on air. It included stars like Faisal Qureshi, Aijaz Aslam, Jana Malik, and Aimen Tariq. The brilliant acting by Faisal Qureshi and Aijaz Aslam managed to make this show popular among the masses. The show then came up with a sequel which had Sumbul Iqbal and Sana Askari as the female leads. Of course, the sequel could not match up to its first season and dragged at times and the comedy scenes also seemed repetitive. What saved the show was Faisal Qureshi and Aijaz Aslam’s acting! The third season is in the making and it will air very soon.
Tanhaiyaan – Naye Silsilay:
This was the most awaited and hyped serial of last year! It was the sequel to the legendary show Tanhaiyaan which is still imprinted in the memory of all Pakistanis. Whether young or old, all audiences have watched this show or at least heard of it and a lot was expected from its sequel. The sequel had few old stars like Marina Khan, Asif Raza Mir, Behroze Sabzwari, Badar Khalil and new stars like Alishba Yousuf, Syra Yousuf, Shehroze Sabzwari, and Shehryar Munawar Siddiqui.
Again, the show had its own charm and was very entertaining but then again, it was no match for the original master piece Tanhaiyan. I found a lot of loopholes in the story and the newcomers’ acting was not up to the mark. But overall, it was a good show but unfortunately it could not meet the audiences’ extremely high expectations as many people seemed disappointed with the show. .
Mirat Ul Uroos:
This show is considered to be a sequel of the show Akhbari Asghari which aired on Hum TV. I would not say this is a proper sequel as the context and storyline has been altered. But the story is on a similar lines as we can again see the story of two contrasting sisters who marries two brothers. Akbari and Asghari are seen as the grandmother of the two sisters and the two brothers.
This show has its own charm and I found it even better than Akhbari Asghari as the story is more interesting and powerful. The cast of Mirat Ul Uroos includes Amna Sheikh, Mikaal Zulfiqar, Ahsan Khan, Mehwish Hayat, Samina Ahmad, Momal Sheikh and others.

KARACHI: ARY Films and Mind Works Media have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to co-produce 2 big-budget movies “WAAR-2” and “Delta Echo Foxtrot”, whereas it was decided that real scenes will be filmed in both the mega movies, instead of animation – ARY News reports.
On this occasion, ARY Films founder and president, Salman Iqbal said that ARY Films and Mind Works Media will jointly work to revive the Pakistan Film Industry. He announced that WAAR-2 and Delta Echo Foxtrot will be made according to the international standards to attract more and more viewers towards Pakistani films.
Dr. Hassan Rana, CEO Mind Works Media said that the services of some of the expert film directors from Hollywood and Pakistan will be obtained in making the movie Delta Echo Foxtrot, while some new faces will also be introduced along with some Pakistani film stars.
Meanwhile, personalities associated with Pakistan Film Industry have also praised the joint efforts of ARY Films and Mind Works Media for rebuilding the lost repute of the industry.
It was also reported that the shooting of WAAR-2 will not only be held in Pakistan, many of its shots will also be filmed in England, Russia, Turkey and Yugoslavia.
Moreover the movie, Delta Echo Foxtrot will be focused on real scenes, keeping in view the standards of the movie.
Both the mega movies of ARY Films and Mind Works Media will be having international experts in the crew, which will prove to be a milestone for the Pakistan Film Industry.
Previously ARY Films has also signed separate MoU with Riaz Shahid films (filmstar Shaan) and Humayun Saeed/ Shahzad Nasib (Producer of Mein Hoon Shahid Afridi) to produce a number of films.
Drama serial Sang-e-Mar Mar was one of the most blockbuster serials of Hum Tv that aired in 2016. Directed by Saife Hassan the drama starred Nauman Ijaz, Sania Saeed, Kubra Khan, Mikala Zulfiqar, and Omair Rana in leading roles. The drama depicted the story of a Pathan family and took the audience on a roller coaster ride of emotions. Even though people weren’t so happy with the ending of the drama yet, it was a super hit play.
Saife Hassan who was director of Sang-e-Mar Mar recently revealed that the sequel of Sang-e-Mar Mar is in making by the name of Sang-e-Mah. It is basically a trilogy series by the name of Sang-e-Mar Mar, Sang-e-Mah, and Sang-e- Siyah. Saife shared that the drama will have the same cast of Nauman Ijaz, Kubra Khan, and Sania Saeed. The plot of a drama revolves around the central character(s) and their transitions due to the various situations they are faced with. It follows their journey from start to end but their journey would be incomplete without the presence of supporting characters. Whilst we try and appreciate a drama in its entirety, more often than not the central characters tend to overshadow the rest of the cast. However, some of the dramas have very skilfully incorporated the talents of the supporting characters and that has added to some very memorable moments.
Whilst there are too many characters that would make the cut, I’ve highlighted only those that had a strong impact in terms of their relation with the central characters and their positive influence on them. Thus the title- Sense and Sensibility. Here are some of my favourite supporting characters in no particular order:
1.Ghazanfarin Bari Apa– Ghazanfar was a very calm and composed man who understood the importance of relationships and always tried to talk sense into the character of Bari Apa. He was the one character that stood out due to his reasoning and personality.
2.Durre-e-Shehwar’s Abbain Durr-e-Shehwar– One of the best aspects in this drama was the depiction of the beautiful relationship between a father and daughter. Mothers tend to be overprotective and emotionally driven, but fathers can give sound advice since they understand a man’s mind only too well. This was definitely one of my favourite characters in the drama.
3.Naani in Shehr-e-Zaat– I adored Naani’s constant little pointers to Falak to bring her closer to religion. Naani was responsible for Falak’s transition from a shallow, self-absorbed individual to a woman of substance.
4.Sara in Zindagi Gulzar Hai– I loved the brother and sister relationship in Zindagi Gulzar Hai. Despite a small role, Sara stood out in this character and shared some very heart-warming conversations with her brother. In a way, she helped him understand himself better.
5.Hajra in Mata-e-Jaan– As Ibad’s mother, she was a pillar of support to her only son and my heart broke when she cried after finding out about Ibad’s death. She was a mother-figure to Haaniya too even before knowing who Haniya was. Hajra was brilliant in this role.
6.Faisal’s ammi in Maat– She was constantly trying to knock some sense into Faisal. She wanted him to marry Aiman since Aiman was the perfect wife-material. When Faisal retaliated and married Saman, she tried very hard to make Saman realize the value of money and take on her responsibilities as the lady of the house. Unfortunately, Saman had plans of her own! She was a patient and understanding saas for a change.
Who have been some of your favourite and most memorable supporting characters?
Hania Amir is well-known as a Pakistani artist whom we have seen in numerous dramas and films. She started her career while still being young and studying in college. She was also known for her famous dub smash videos that turned out to be the tipping point for her media career. It was Imran Kazmi, the popular producer, who cast her in the Movie Janaan after which there was no stopping for Hania.

Renowned Pakistani actor Talat Iqbal passed away in US, his family has confirmed. Talat was admitted to the hospital after his condition deteriorated following his daughter’s death. According to reports, Talat’s daughter was struggling with an illness for a long time however, it remains to be seen what the cause of death is.
According to the family, Talat’s funeral will be held after Jumma prayers in Al Rehman mosque and he will be buried at Restland graveyard in Dallas.

A drama is never complete without supporting characters, though they never receive the deserving applause and admiration like the leading characters they are equally talented and gifted. Supporting characters are wide ranging but the ones included in this article are characters of mothers, grandmothers, aunties etc. in short the senior supporting actresses.
Our industry is blessed with many actresses who have aided the industry to flour and prosper. Actresses like Bushra Ansari, Zeba Shehnaz, Saba Hameed, Zaheen Tahira, Tahira Wasti (late), Azra Sherwani (late), Perveen Akbar, Durdana Butt, Badar Khalil and Aisha Khan became associated with the industry at very early stages not only of Pakistan television but also of their lives. Some of the earlier actresses performed leading roles along the way as well however they performed side roles more frequently, ultimately giving us a permanent part of the essential ingredients of a drama. It is with the help of these side characters that the protagonists appear more strong and well-constructed in a strong knitted plot. Side characters also broaden the scope of dramas, giving insight to other aspects and scenarios of life imitations. A drawback of side characters can be that at times they are given more importance and space in the drama than the leading characters but it rarely happens. Most of the times these characters are similar giving little or no scope to the artists for utilizing their talents.
Doing the side characters have stamped their fates as mothers, grandmothers etc. Unfortunately most of these characters lack versatility and these actresses are always stuck with same benign, kind and caring or shrewd, cunning, manipulative and at times extremely evil roles. It is highly unjust that they are trapped in the snare of typecast. Though some of the actresses appear to be doing similar roles in every other play, actress like Saba Hameed, Samina Pirzada, Bushra Ansari and Hina Dilpazeer have earned the labels of most versatile actresses of the industry. Tariq Jameel Paracha began his career as a ptv set designer but emerged as a successful PTV producer for Karachi center who produced Shafi Muhammad Shah and Shugufta Ijaz’s popular drama Aanch which was his first drama, the drama became a blockbuster. He worked with PTV as a producer for many years. Currently, he was successfully performing in Pakistani dramas. Pakistan’s senior film, TV actor and director Masood Akhtar passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 82. Masood Akhtar was hospitalized from last two months in private hospital in Lahore, after he was diagnosed with lungs cancer. Five months ago Masood Akhtar’s son breath his last after being diagnosed with cancer.
Masood was a recipient of the Pride of Performance. Masood Akhtar has been a part of various TV dramas, films as well as theatre productions. He got fame through one of his play “Paisa Bolta Hai” which was staged at Alhamra Arts Council in the 1970s.

Veteran Pakistan television actor Sajjad Kishwar passes away at the age of 89. Sajjad Kishwar was born in 1933, in Ludhiana, Punjab, India. He was was a well-known Pakistani film and television actor. In later years of his 60 years long career span, he mostly worked from Pakistan television’s Islamabad station and acted in many popular dramas. He breathed his last in Rawalpindi, after a prolonged illness.
He passed away on 24 May 2022, veteran actor Sajjad Kishwar’s funeral prayers were announced to be offered in Committee Chowk, Rawalpindi.
The actor has done uncountable hit performances and made his significant place in acting. Sajjad Kishwar received lifetime achievement awards, Pakistan television awards and many other awards. He worked in Radio Pakistan and got lifetime achievement award for his services for Radio Pakistan.
His notable dramas were Raizgari, Akhri Shab and Waris. His notable films were Aaina, Zindagi, Meherbani and Khuda Kay Liey. He was also a poet. His demise is a huge loss of Pakistani television and media industry and his services will always be remembered by Pakistanis.

4) Shamim Hilali
This Lady is truly an artist. What I like the most about is her outstanding simplicity, which is feature owned by her only. Her most memorable performances came in the dramas ‘Maigh Malhaar’, which aired on former channel STN and ‘Sophia’, which was a very popular drama on PTV. Being a senior actress, Shamim’s performances do not make her seem like an actress but a natural performer. Its always a pleasure watching her on screen,whether it be in Maat, Uraan or Talkhiyaan.
5) Saba Hameed
“Azam, Aap Agaye..?” is something I would never forget about Saba Hameed,after all that’s what I remember first about her, that is her Flawless performance in Family Front. Seems like Hina Dilpazeer of Bulbulay is a new version of the hilarious Family front team. Saba Hameed is a capable actress who is good in everything she does on screen. However, it is a pity that such a wonderful actress is suffering through typecasting where every next role been offered to her is of a cruel mother-in-law just like in Main Abdul Qadir hun, Qaid-e-Tanhai and Ik Tamana Lahasil, on the top of the list. Believing that Saba Hameed would soon be seen in something new and exciting, it is to say that we, as an audience still rates her on top of the list.
6) Rubina Ashraf
Rubina Ashraf is a great actress who keeps entertaining her audience through her acting skills. Though her acting in her new serial Parchaiyaan didn’t enjoy good rating, she is still very close to the hearts of the viewers. Her performance as Inspector Shehla is something that is kind of a historical piece of work.
7) Hina Dilpazeer
Momo has created a new world in the field of comedy, especially when the drama industry is suffering through a really bad taste in terms of comedy. Hina, who started her career very late has proven that talent has no age. Her acting or perhaps the masterpiece of work in Bulbulay will always be remembered by the viewers and the next generation. Bulbulay seems like CID of the neighboring country. It keeps on repeating, the viewers keep on watching it!
8) Hina Bayat
I, personally like Hina’s acting a lot, probably because of the fact that I have been adoring her for her personality and dressing since she first appeared on screen in a discussion program called,Uljhan Suljhan. Being a writer herself, Hina’s columns are what I really love to read. Coming to her acting, It seems that she takes her acting career really serious and tries to work hard accordingly.
