After their promotional appearance in Jeeto Pakistan, a show which reaches millions of viewers every day, the Ho Mann Jahan Team headed to the Institute Of Business Management in Karachi where they interacted with the young students, danced with them and took a lot of pictures. Sheheryar Munawar, Adeel Hussein, Mahira Khan and Asim Raza all made their appearance felt by getting the students involved in the best way possible.
The students along with the team members enjoyed the performances in different groups on “Shakar Wandaan”. Mahira Khan was seen wearing a Feeha Jamshed outfit once again. Feeha Jamshed is not only a well-known designer but she is also Mahira Khan’s best friend. Fahad Mustafa invited the “Ho Mann Jahan” team to his show in which he asked them a few questions and they played games with the audience. Mahira Khan, Sheheryar Munawar and Asim Raza came to the show. Sheheryar Munawar is also producing the film, this is going to be his first production. Ho Mann Jahan is the first Pakistani film of 2016 released on 1st January 2016. The film is facing a stiff competition from the two giant Bollywood films Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani. Though released on two weeks ago both Bollywood films are still earning decently especially Dilwale is proving a grand success.
Ho Mann Jahan thus has to share screen space with these two Bollywood films. The film was allotted 160 shows on the very first day i.e. 1st July 2016. However after seeing an increase in demand, more shows were allotted on the Saturday 2nd January 2016 making it to 195 shows.
The manager of the Super Cinema in Gulberg, Lahore confirmed increase in the shows on Saturday and Sunday in his tweet.
The film earned 1.40 crore on the very first day (from 160 shows), and due to increased number of shows (195 shows) it earned 1.55 crore on the Saturday 2nd January 2016. The film earned 1.20 crore on the Sunday 3rd January 2016. So the overall collections of the three day weekend is around 4.15 crore which is a very good earning on Pakistani box office.
The weekdays from Monday – Friday and upcoming weekend will decide the trend of the final earning of the film. The stated budget of the film is 10 crore and it must perform well on the upcoming weekend to recover its expenses and enter into the double digit earning.
The film is also released in countries like UAE, UK and USA but collections from these countries are not available.
HMJ being an urban story with subtle treatment was expected to do well only in the multiplexes of the big cities Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad/Rawalpindi. The film lacks the loudness and glamour which is attributed towards the mass appeal of a film and is therefore not expected to do well at small urban centers like Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Gujrat, Multan and the circuit cinemas (single screen cinemas) of Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad/Rawalpindi. However its weekend performance has exceeded the more commercial films like Wrong No. released last year on Eidul Fitr.

Ho Mann Jahaan (HMJ) released on 1st January 2016 has so far earned more the 10 crore on Pakistani box office. The film so far has earned 11.79 crore in 18 days. Being of drama genre, a genre which is not much popular in general public the film has performed well. As expected the film proved successful in the big multiplexes located in the posh areas of the Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. The performance of the film was not satisfactory at the single screen circuit cinemas of Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad. The film also struggled at the small urban centres like Faisalabad, Gujrat, Multan, Gujranwala, Sargodha. Seeing this progress the film is expected to end up in the range of 13 crore. The stated budget (including all marketing and promotional activities) of the film was 9 crore.
Last year Bin Roye another film of drama genre earned 10.85 crore, and in comparison HMJ has already earned more than Bin Roye. Bin Roye performed exceptionally well overseas by earning more than 10 crore in UK, UAE and USA especially in UK it earned nearly 9 crore. In comparison the performance of HMJ has been below satisfactory overseas the film has earned nearly 4 crore in its first week in UK, UAE and USA and the overseas earning is expected to be in the range of 5 – 6 crore.

People are very excited for the film and so are the team members who worked very hard on the film. The team of Ho Mann Jahaan has been promoting the film for over a month now and even now they are busy hosting and being part of premiers in different cities. Asim Raza said in one of his interviews that some people were criticizing him for using beautiful faces to attract the attention of the people. He said that everyone wanted to see beautiful faces, everyone likes them so why not?
After Lahore the film was premiered in Karachi. The premier in Karachi was a much bigger affair than the one in Lahore because most of the showbiz personalities are settled in Karachi. Even Pervaiz Musharraf was seen endorsing the film. He has never been seen in any of the other film premiers. Mahira Khan wore a very formal golden dress. Sonia Jehan looked stylish in a black dress. All the female and male celebrities were dressed up in formal wear.

Ho Mann Jahan is a story of three friends Arhaan (Sheheryaar), Nadir (Adeel) and Manizey (Mahira). They study at IBA, one of the best business schools of Pakistan but their hearts and passion lie with music. Arhaan is from middle class. His mother has died and he is weak in studies and because of that, he hasn’t got good relations with his retired government servant father. Nadir is from a high class family. He is an obedient son and good in studies too. His mother (Bushra Ansari) is quite protective of him. His father (Arshad Mehmood) is a businessman. Manizey lives with her Artist mother (Nimra Bucha) while her father who was a singer once and now a religious man doesn’t live with them. The story is about what happens to the 3 friends after they leave the college.
I have never liked spoilers myself and wouldn’t want to spoil it for you, so you will have to go to the cinema yourself and watch it yourselves. I would say that by the end of 3 hours, not only I was pleasantly happy with the film but both of my friends who accompanied me liked it and could relate to the characters of the story especially the parents! :D
Here are my thoughts and opinions about the film.
The main theme of the story is ‘pursuing dreams’ and music is just used as a backdrop. I personally don’t have any problem with that but some people might be disappointed if they were expecting to see the trials and tribulations of making it big in music.
It is basically an elite class youth oriented movie. The strong points of the story for me were that all the characters were relatable and there was no distinct evil character. They had their positives and negativities and the just like in real life the conflicts arise because of the different way of thinking of different people. I also liked the small comics moments in the film for example Arhaan’s congratulating the other’s on engagement, Arhaan gesturing at boys to keep off during ‘barish’ and Manizey winking at Arhaan. The funniest thing is that this is usually what happens in reality. The other thing that made an impact for me was that the movie just like 3 Idiots, it gives some messages (pursue your dreams, be tolerant of other’s view and don’t control your children lives too much) meanwhile entertaining us as well. The best part about the movie is the music and beautiful cinematography. Each and every frame was exquisite and colourful.
I especially liked the scene between Manizey and her father at the end of the movie. At first, I was thinking; Please don’t include religion in this. But I liked two things in that scene. First Manizey said that she was angry because she felt that her father judged her but she herself judged him as well. I like it because nowadays people judge others just because they are a little Islamic and would generalise them as extremists. The second thing was they showed that people can have different opinions yet they could live peacefully. We should be tolerant and this is what Pakistanis lack.
Here are my thoughts about the main characters:
Arhaan: My most favourite character in the movie was Arhaan. I was quite pleasantly surprised by Sheheryaar’s acting. Different facets of Arhaan’s personality were played well and his character was quite interesting. I really liked his acting in some of the intense sense. And in my opinion Sheheryaar is the star of the movie. Arhaan was the most flawed character of the movie but this trait made him the most endearing.
Nadir: Adeel Hussain was also great as Nadir. Although he was able to show Nadir’s emotions effectively but during one of the scenes when he comes back home heartbroken, he looked more drunk then heartbroken. But I did like the epic fall on table!
Manizey: Mahira Khan as Manizey looked stunning. Mahira usually plays role like Khirad and Shanno so it was nice to see her in the role of a strong woman. She played the role brilliantly. Coming to the character Manizey, she is the most level headed person among her friends. And because of that, I feel her role wasn’t as great as the boys. She was a secondary character to the bigger stories of both the boys. Whereas I could clearly see Nadir’s struggles and pain, never once did Manizey show her emotions about her father. I think it would have been better if they showed a scene where Manizey feels really emotional for her father. Maybe they could have shown it when she meets Arhaan’s father and seeing the love he had for his son she feels sad about her father too. Her character felt a little half baked and thus wasn’t as engaging as the boys’.
Sabeena: Sonya Jahan as Sabeena looked graceful and glamorous. Her acting was great and in the short span that her character was given, she was able to shine in her role. I liked Sabeena’s character a lot too. She is a single working woman. She has her own restaurant and her objective look at life is great. She can be a role model for all women.
All the different parents did an amazing job. But somehow I felt Bushra Ansari could have emoted much better.
Writing: The story of the movie is quite simple. In fact you can call it the weakest point of the movie as the story is very predictable. What makes it amazing is the fact that inside all the entertainment, the movie shoes two three clear messages.
Direction and Cinematography: I really liked the direction and cinematography of the film.. I especially liked the camera angles during the restaurant scenes. And Karachi never looked this stunning. All the establishing shots of Karachi, boats, northern areas, crop fields, and seaside were beautiful too. It was a 3 hour movie but I didn’t lose concentration at all. So thumbs up for the director. Every frame was presented beautifully and I especially liked the train station, proposal scenes. I absolutely loved the shots of the boat in the sea and the whole direction of ‘Barish’ song.
Editing and Pace: As far as the pace of the story was concerned, the initial introduction of the characters took a little time. But when the actual movie started, I started enjoying each and every scene. The editing was a little choppy at start and some scenes could have been shortened but it got better after the introduction of characters. I didn’t understand why Arhaan asking Sabeena for forgiveness and missed the point. That point should have been elaborated.
Wardrobe and Locations: The wardrobe was amazing and the whole time I was trying to remember Arhaan and Nadir’s clothes (Pagri for sure is in my shopping list!). And I also noticed that they included the whole spectrum of colours in the youngsters’ clothing giving the movie a very youthful and vibrant look.
All of the locations were great. I liked that they included the train station dhaba and showed the raw side of the country. Apart of that, Manizey’s house interior design was great and the restaurant was exquisite.
Music: The music has been out for some time and I like each and every song of the film. One thing that I noticed was that the transition when the music starts was abrupt during the first quarter and it didn’t gel with the story. Even the background music felt a little off at the start. But after the initial introduction, when the story itself started, the transition and the background music was spot on. I especially liked ‘Khush Piya Wasi’; it was used at such a precise time! I knew almost all the songs by heart and was enjoying so much that I couldn’t stop myself from singing along as well.
Cameos: All the different cameos were great. Fawad Khan is a real star and looked his usual charismatic self (maybe more!). He just lit up the screen as soon as he came. On the other hand, each time Hamza came on screen, I just couldn’t help laughing. Syra Yousaf’s cameo was a good surprise which I enjoyed a lot. Zeb is my favourite singer these days and it was great to see her in the movie.
All in all, Ho Mann Jahan is a really great and entertaining movie. Yes, it wasn’t perfect and there is always room for improvement especially in the story department but the great thing for me which made it such a compelling and heartfelt movie was the messages that it had hidden in the shining glossy wrapping. The movie still had a bit of telefilm feel which our directors should pay attention to. But I also think that we have to find our own exclusive identity apart from Bollywood or Hollywood and the lack of filminess could be our identity where the focus is on acting and social empowerment with the right amount of masala to entertain our masses. And Ho Mann Jahan is a total Pakistani movie which ticks all these boxes.
People say that our films aren’t good. If you don’t give them a chance how could you know that the film wasn’t good? We have to support our cinema and for that everyone should go and watch the movies so that our film industry can improve. We should always give constructive criticism so that the industry is moving in the right direction.
Indeed a change of taste is required now or at least some interesting stories please, don’t know about others but I am literally getting bored watching same old stories again and again. The last quarter of 2013 and first quarter of 2014 was indeed good lots of good dramas went ON-AIR and some ended on a good note while others proved to be a total disappointment in terms of ending for example Meri Beti, Sannata, aasmano pe likha and the greatest amongst them all was Ru-Baru. Some dramas experienced great endings like Bunty I love you (you may not agree with me on this), Muhabbat Subah ka Sitara hai, Ranjeesh Hi Sahi and Ishq mein tere. Now finally Pyaray Afzal is also coming to end, I must say that this drama proved to be the most interesting drama of 2014 and I am hopeful that its end shall not disappoint me either.
There is a saying in Urdu “Raat gai baat gai” so now we have to see what’s on in second quarter of 2014. To be honest this quarter is a complete disappointment to me, nothing new but in fact worse than before. HUM-TV has let down its viewers a big time by telecasting dramas like “Janam Jali” moreover the trend of telecasting Umera Ahmed’s dramas on every Friday at 8.00pm had also been broken as they are now telecasting drama serial “Mausam” which seems to be a mixture of past Hum TV dramas. Despite having Saba Qamar and Meekal Zulfiqar in the lead cast drama serial “Izteraab” is another addition in the pipeline of disappointments. “Ahista Ahista” was supposed to be a mega project by Hum-TV for this season and through promos and teasers I was thinking that it might be an interesting drama but sigh from the first episode it has given me a gesture that this drama is nothing but a typical story of a man stuck between two marriages. Directors and producers have to understand that shooting a drama in America and showing a large villa with an Aston Martin DB9 might add quality in production values but will not help to attract viewers until and unless there is a good storyline. Not only HUM-TV but ARY is also equally responsible for telecasting absolute crap specially in this season “Koi Nahi Apna” is the biggest disappointment of this season.
Anyways enough of disappointments so do we have actually something interesting in this season and the answer is yes of course. Since there is so much crappy stuff ON-AIR it’s difficult to encounter with the quality stuff on TV but don’t worry I am writing to let you know that what’s good that you can currently watch on TV.
Kahani Raima aur Manahil Ki: I know that most of you aren’t following this drama and the reason is that from 1st episode till 7th episode there is no storyline whatsoever in the drama except the light hearted comedy but suddenly after episode 7 this drama has become extremely interesting. Faiza Iftikhar is surely an example of wit and solemnity she knows how to add humour in her dramas. I strongly recommend to have a go on this drama you will surely find it worth watching. This drama is being telecast on HUM-TV every Tuesday at 9.10pm.
Uff Meri Family: This is currently the most hilarious and wittiest comedy soap on HUM-TV. The lead cast is Naveen and Azfar, I know that many people don’t like this couple but my point is that aren’t we getting too judgmental and overreacting on their marriage. I mean it’s their personal decision and we have no authority or right to criticise them on their personal lives we can only criticise artists on his/her professional life. Anyways if you want to see some crunchy comedy then watch this soap for sure every Sunday at 7.25pm on HUM-TV.
Marasim: Seriously no words to explain the brilliance of this drama and to be honest I am loving it. Brilliant production, excellent acting and dialogues, best storyline and well executed direction. Top notch performance by the whole cast seems like directors know how to get best out of the whole cast. I wait anxiously for the next episode every week. After Aunn Zara this is the best by A-Plus. I will strongly recommend to watch this drama. This drama is currently ON-AIR on A-Plus every Sunday at 8.00pm.
Laa: I am quite impressed from the first two episodes of this drama, good to watch sadia Khan after a long time but it’s awkward to know that she had also done lip surgery. I don’t know why the hell actresses love to undergo lip surgery she was pretty in Khuda aur Muhabbat. Anyways I know that almost everyone is watching this drama so no need to recommend it. Just waiting for Sabreen’s entry in this drama as I love her acting.
Soteli: A story of a cruel step mother featuring Ayesha Khan in a negative role. First four episodes were really good and worth watching and I am hoping that the good pace may continue as well in future. Although ARY dramas always start with a good pace but ends drastically. This drama is currently being telecast every Sunday at 8.00 pm on ARY.
Adhura Milan: Great start I must say! Sometimes I feel that I am watching a PTV drama, this A-Plus drama is surely a visual delight although I have serious concerns with the acting of newbies. The story seems quite impressive up till now let’s see how the drama will progress in future. This drama is currently ON-AIR on A-plus every Friday at 8.00 pm.
Besides these plays I am reading some really good reviews of drama Phehchan on A-Plus, Shikwa on ARY and Mere humdum mere dost on Urdu 1 but I am not watching these dramas.
So tell me what dramas you are watching currently and would you recommend it to others as well.
With Mera sultan ending soon it is time for me to review this drama which has no doubt left it’s mark on our collective psyche. The drama while a great favorite of mine unfortunately contains historical errors so I will be reviewing it fully so for die hard fans of the drama be warned ‘SPOLIERS AHEAD’.
When Mera Sultan was first aired certain people started the propaganda that it was anti-Islamic and meant to defile the image of a great Muslim ruler. Fed as we are by a myopic version of our history we simply could not comprehend that Muslims can do bad things too. Also Sultan Suleiman was a great ruler indeed but he was not perfect. So today I’m going to discuss historical incidents only.
1) Sultan Suleman succeeded his father Sultan selim the grim ( Known so because of his cruelty) and was generally regarded as a just ruler. He is called Suleman the law-giver and expanded The Ottoman empire to it’s greatest heights however he did NOT DO IT ALONE. He was aided in it by his great prime minister Pargali Ibrahim Pasha, Khizr raees and many more able men.
2) Sultan’s greatest vizier, his best friend, brother-in-law who was like a brother to him was Ibrahim Pasha who helped him achieve great heights. However in Royal reign no other person is allowed to have so much power. He was strangled in his sleep a decision Suleman always regretted. Another reason given was that he was not in favor of Hurem sultan who conspired with her son-in-law Rustem Pasha to have him killed.
3) Sultan’s mother Ayşe Hafsa Sultan was the first Queen Mother to awarded the title of ‘ Valida-e-Sultan’. She was almost Sultan’s co-ruler and unlike the drama was not insulted regularly by Sultan for the sake of his precious Hurem.
4) Sultan had many Concubines as the Turks did not believe that any royal family was equal to them in stature and hence they kept slave-girls in their Harems. Sultan’s First concubine was Fulane Hatun who gave him a son, then came Gulfem who also bore him a son, then came Mahidevran who was the mother of Mustafa. Fulane and Gulfem’s sons died in their youth and after that they both lost their previous power and position.
5) Mahidevran was perhaps the most unfortunate Queen in history. Originally thought to be a concubine it is now known that she was the daughter of a circassian prince. According to one of her descendants who was angry at her portrayal in this series both she and Gulfem were wives of Sultan not concubines. She gave birth to FOUR CHILDREN. Mustafa, Ahmed who died young, Raziya Sultan who married her brother’s supporter Tashjee ali Yahiya and Fatima who was married to the royal architect Mimar Sinan. Mahi’s real life was even sadder in real life then that shown in the drama. She was expelled from the palace when Mustafa was very young and spent the rest of her life in remote outposts of the empire. After Mustafa’s death her royal salary was ended. She lived in great poverty but the common people gave her tremendous respect ( While they abused Hurem non-stop). It must be noted that she outlived all her children and took care of her grandchildren all by herself. It was only during Selim’s reign that her pension was restored. Sultan’s treatment of her was unfair beyond belief. It must be noted that she was extremely beautiful and is considered by some as the most beautiful woman in Turkish history. How ever this beauty did not ensure her a fate she deserved.
6) Gulfem was the concubine or wife before Mahidevran. She is said to be a Sicilian or polish concubine, daughter of a prince called Murad, Daughter of an Albanian Bey or daughter of a convert to Islam called Abdurrahman.( One of them)! How ever all Ottoman sources describe her as extremely intelligent, fluent in many languages and a favorite of Suleman. It is said that she was second only to Hurem sultan in the Harem and after Hurem’s death she reigned supreme the Sultan would spend his nights with her sharing his sorrows with her. In Turkish archives there is a letter by her to Shehzade Beyazid advising him not to rebel against his father. This clearly shows that she was genuinely concerned with the empire’s well-being and was an important member of it. How ever the other concubines sought to get rid of her. Gulfem was building a mosque and ran out of funds. One concubine agreed to give her gold in exchange for her giving one of her nights with the sultan to her. Poor Gulfem thought that it was not such a big deal however she was wrong. The ‘great and just’ Sultan had her dragged right away by her hair to his room and without even hearing her explanation had her strangled right there! Later when he found out about it he ordered her mausoleum built next to the mosque she had commissioned.
7) Hurem is portrayed as the heroine of this series although to be frank this is the first heroine I have seen who displays serious psychological problems and has all the patterns consistent with a serial killer. Hurem was a Ruthenian slave known to the west as Roxana because of her Russian origin. She bore The Sultan five sons and a daughter. One of these sons died as a baby and hence was not shown in the drama. The real Hurem was not breathtakingly beautiful but was said to be heavy with an attractive face, jolly nature and it is said that she possessed s*x appeal. She was However extremely sharp who used her wits to beat her rivals. In this she was helped by Rustem pasha who later became her son-in-law. By no standards of morality whether in the drama or in real life can Hurem be considered right. Infact as foreign ambassadors reported Turks used to abuse her openly and call her a witch especially after Mustafa’s death. Hurem’s three major achievements were
a) Marrying the Sultan.
b) Never leaving the Harem with her son as was the custom but staying on till the very end with Suleman.
c) Moving to the main palace with Sultan as a fire ‘mysteriously burned down the old harem’. ( Yaqeenan khud lagwai hogi)
8) Sultan’s sisters had nothing against Hurem. They added this part for spicing up the serial and also so people can feel sympathy for the ‘Innocent Hurem. khazeena( real name Hatice) died heart-broken two years after Ibrahim’s death. Fatima and Beyhaan lived their lives quietly after their husband were killed by the great Sultan. Sah obtained a divorce not because of Hurem’s conspiracies but because her husband beat her.
9) Mustafa was the eldest and undoubtedly the greatest of Sultan’s sons. Sultan had him killed as Rustem had him believed that the army was planning to replace Suleman with him. Our Great Sultan not only had him killed but had his young son Mehmet executed. Can any Huremist or people who admire Sultan give me a solid reply what danger could a child pose to a great Sultan like Suleman? Also he did not disobey his father by marrying Khizr raees’s daughter. Their is no Mehrunnissa Hatun. His son was by his concubine Rumaisa.
10) Hurem’s son Mehmet died a natural death due to small pox. What they showed in the drama WAS A LIE. MAHIDEVRAN DID NOT KILL HIM. THEY ADDED THIS PART SO PEOPLE CAN JUSTIFY HUREM’S CONSPIRACIES AGAINST MUSTAFA. He was married to his cousin Esmahan daughter of Sah sultan whom he fell in love with as soon as he saw her and had a daughter with her. After his untimely death the ‘great innocent sweet long-suffering poor’ Hurem snatched her grand daughter from Esmahan and had her sent to her mother where she died heart broken four years later.
11) Ayaz Pasha the vizier after Ibrahim was not killed by Sah but died a natural death in a plague. ( Lagta hai writer conspiracy theories pe yaqeen rakhti thi her death ko Hurem ke dushmanon key ser pe daal dia) LOL.
12) Kazi Ebu Saud, Yahiya effendi ( Sultan’s foster brother), Sikander chalebi, Tashjee ali Yahiya are all real historical characters.
13) Jahangir died heart-broken for his step brother Mustafa.
14) Beyazid rebelled and was executed with his sons on order of Sultan Suleman in Persia where he has taken refuge. Sultan offered shah Tahmpasamp 400000 gold coins for having his own son and grand sons killed. ( wah wah lekin phir bhi ham nahi manengen aur kahengen ye sab jhoot aur west ka propaganda hai)
15) Hurem’s son Selim was a useless drunk. Turks suffered the worst defeat of their history in his reign at the Battle of Lepanto.
16) Sadiqa/Victoria, Froze khatoon, Princess Isabella, nazenin were all fictional characters added to show how much Hurem had to fight to control/brainwash her Sultan. LOL
17) Shah Tahmpasamp of Iran was a weak rival Of Sultan. He did not obsess about harming the ottomans. Later his descendant Shah Abbas the great inflicted major defeats on the Ottomans when they were in decline in the Sultanate of women period.
18) The murders in Harem are based on reality. Hurem initiated a reign of terror. Her cruelty can be judged by the following real incident. One of Sultan’s concubines Gulshah khatoon bore him a daughter called Nuriye Gul Sultan. Hurem made numerous attempts to kill mother and/or daughter and finally when the daughter was 3 years old she succeeded. They were killed and their bodies thrown in the sea. This incident shows Hurem’s inhumanity and Sultan’s criminal negligence. ( They did show a Gulshah in the drama. She was however a gullible maid of Mahi and Later Hurem who only caused harm to her employers)
20) Meherma the daughter of Hurem was highly influential and acted as Valida-e-sultan in her brother’s reign. Her marriage to much elder Rustem was considered an unhappy one and she spent most of her time with her father. Her Husband Rustem was one of the most corrupt and hated Grand viziers in Turkish history.
21) After Mustafa’s death the Janissaries rebelled so to placate them Sultan had Rustem deposed and on his advice appointed his brother-in-law Kara Ahmet Pasha to this position. This measure basically saved their life but within two years Sultan repaid this favor by executing Kara Ahmet pasha!
When all is said and done there is no doubt that It was an excellent and entertaining drama and I look anxiously forward to Kosem Sultan the next installment of this series. The Turks really know how to make historical dramas.
