Yaariyan Episode 1 to 11 – An Overview

I haven’t tuned into a drama starring Ayeza Khan after Tau Dil Ka Kya Hua therefore I decided to give this one a go after getting a few requests from facebook users to review it. The production house’s obsession with ‘khoobsurti’ (goray log) stands out more than anything else throughout apart from Ayeza Khan’s attempt to look really casual in a made-up look (talk about taking contradiction to a whole new level!). It is actually sad watching Ayeza Khan focus on her looks so much especially because she doesn’t need it. Momal Sheikh’s lack of talent reflects from every single scene and Muneeb Butt’s attempts to flaunt his well-built body makes him the perfect candidate for the next YNH film!

Coming to the story, it is has been-there-seen-that (a million times) written all over it. Yaariyan is Guzarish, Maat, Woh Mera Dil Tha, Ghar Titli Ka Par and Ishq Tamasha mixed in one. The writer has taken inspiration from all these dramas yet Yaariyan doesn’t even pass as a guilty pleasure, something you would watch for fun, because the characters are black and white to a boring extent and most of the performances are as fake as they get. If you want to watch goray chitay log (courtesy a very light foundation) suffering while looking their best then do tune into this show, otherwise don’t!

I have been dying to vent out therefore I am going to share my thoughts about each character in this review/rant. This drama has few of the most shallow characters translated on screen in an even more one-dimensional manner by the actors involved.

Sadia (Momal Sheikh)

Bechargi ki tasweer

Sadia is the ‘perfect’ (perfectly annoying) sister and daughter, she is pious to the core but she gets stuck in a situation in which her character/morality is questioned (Meri Zaat Zara-e-Benishan?) and as a result her life takes a turn for the worse. Sadia’s over exaggerated becharapan coupled with absolutely no real personality and Momal Sheikh’s performance which literally gets on your nerves made it impossible for me to feel for her.

Zobia (Ayeza Khan)

Meesni no. 1

Zobia’s character makes little sense, she is manipulative, selfish and spoiled but most of the times whatever she does isn’t backed by a lot of logic. She is negative and spoiled and that’s it! Ayeza Khan’s over-reliance on make-up and styling makes this character look more fake than it needed to. Ayeza’s dressing is really casual, sometimes the three pieces of the outfit don’t even match but the overloaded foundation is never out of place. It is almost as if the leading ladies weren’t allowed to tie their hair under any circumstances.

Umair (Muneeb Butt)

Ahmed from Kesa Yeh Naseeban all over again

Umair is another character which lies on the extreme. There is nothing likable about this character and Muneeb Butt’s performance is a bit over the top most of the time. It is like watching him play the same character he played in Kesa Yeh Naseeban – he tries to be a good son but is a horrible husband.

Yaariyan Episode 1 to 11 - An Overview

Ahmer (Junaid Khan)

Mehrab and Moonis all over again

Junaid Khan yet again plays the bechara even though he is the one who made a wrong decision. He reminds me of Mehrab, who stayed a bechara right till the end even though he did so much that was wrong. Ahmer also reminds me of Moonis from Khasara because of the way Junaid Khan has carried this character throughout.

Hamid Baig (Mehmood Aslam)

Gaiti’s dad is back

Mehmood Aslam has been typecast in this drama because he is yet again playing the same character he played in Do Bol. He is the unreasonable father who forces his daughter to get married to the man she was ‘caught with’. Yes! Believe it or not, it is the same scenario all over again which has been originally lifted from the play Woh Mera Dil Tha. Forced nikkah’s caused by misunderstandings seem to be the latest trend in our dramas.

Aliya (Hina Bayat)

Only good thing about this drama

Aliya’s character is in this drama is the only good thing about it. Although Aliya is too good to be true at times but Hina Bayat has managed to add grace to this character even with those high heels and made-up look.

Zeenat (Shagufta Ijaz)

The helpless mother

Zeenat is the helpless mother without whom all those tragedies which occurred in this drama wouldn’t have happened. Shagufta Ijaz is an amazing actress, she can make even the most average of characters look good on screen therefore her performance is the only reason why her character is not the worst one in the play. Also, the fact that Zeenat knows her daughters well and gives everything a second thought makes her character relatively more nuanced.

Final Remarks

Yaariyan is one of those many dramas which are made with all the ‘commercial elements’ in mind. The writer took plenty of inspiration from dramas which were popular in the recent past which makes the story highly predictable. The fact that many of the actors in this drama are typecast goes to show the narrow vision of the director. The over emphasis on everyone’s looks is another off-putting factor apart from the average performances which are anything but effortless. The performances on the contrary look well rehearsed and staged. The overuse of the OST just adds to the torture.

A special request to all the writers, please stop showing this forced nikkah scenario. Ever since Woh Mera Dil Tha aired, it seems like parents forcing their children into jhat pat nikkah seems to be a  favorite of all those writers who love replicating original ideas!

Are you watching Yaariyan? Do share your thoughts about it.

Kun Faya Kun Episode 1 Story Review – High Expectations

Introductory Details:

Ohkay so, written by Qaisera Hayat, directed by Ilyas Kashmiri & produced by MD Productions; Kun Fayakun has hit our TV screens tonight. It won’t be wrong to say that this was highly anticipated drama & the very first episode not only exceeded the expectations but has laid the foundation of what is yet to come convincingly. The first episode of Kun Fayakun introduced all the main characters & gave an insight into their personalities & mindsets. I am sure this drama is going to be one amazing journey & when this episode ended, I felt like I wanted to watch the next episode immediately.

Cast & Characters:

So basically the story has started with all the characters belonging to one big family of Appa Jee (Azra Mehmood) & her sons Ubaid (Mohsin Gillani) & Abbas.

Ubaid is married to Shama (Nargis Rasheed) & has three children; Armaan (Ahmed Taha Ghani), Bisma (Zarnish Khan) & Burhaan (Raees Muhammad). Abbas is married to Faseeha (Naima Khan) & they have two children Hashir (Imran Abbas) & Areesha (Areej Mohyuddin). Appa Jee also had another son Azam but it seems he & his wife passed away, leaving behind their daughter Mashal (Alizeh Shah).

Kun Faya Kun Episode 1 Story Review - High Expectations

Kun Faya Kun Episode 1 Story Review - High Expectations

The Plot:

Shama & Faseeha are shown to be living a comfortable life with their sons Armaan & Hashir being at this stage where they earn & provide luxuries to their families. Even though they are leading a decent life, they really can not accept the fact that their husbands; Abbas & Ubaid help their mother Appa Jee financially. Even though Shama & Faseeha won’t ever think about their extravagance, but the fact that their husbands have to bear some expenses of their mother & orphan niece makes them restless!

Kun Faya Kun Episode 1 Story Review - High Expectations

Shama has made sure that Ubaid has no say whatsoever in the upbringing of her children. Right now Shama had everything going in her favor with her eldest son Armaan making decent money in Gulf. Shama has spoiled Bisma as well as Burhaan to no end & Ubaid feels she will pay a huge price for this. Faseeha is no different too & even though she might not be as conniving as Shama, that thing is taken care of by Areesha because she does all the calculations & thinking for her mother!

Mashal lives with Appa Jee & her relationship with her grandmother was the most heart-warming aspect as well as my favorite thing about this first episode. Mashal does complain a little about the things that are missing from her life but every time she feels low, Appa Jee makes sure to uplift her moral with her wisdom. Even though Mashal happens to be Bisma & Areesha’s cousin, her life is completely opposite to theirs & being a girl of a tender age, she does get sad with their attitude towards her. Mashal holds Appa Jee closest to her heart & she feels safe & secure with her.

Bisma & Hashir like each other a lot but it was interesting to see how subtly yet clearly the stark difference between their personalities was shown. Hashir believes in doing good, he is selfless & compassionate whereas Bisma is self-centred to the point of being selfish. Bisma has been raised like that by Shama, therefore she believes in being heard. Even though on the surface, both the families of Abbas & Ubaid are on good terms with each other, but in reality, all the ladies pretty much do not hold a good opinion about one another & that is going to create a lot of differences in the future.

Kun Faya Kun Episode 1 Story Review - High Expectations

Hashir’s interaction with Appa Jee was very sweet, he takes care of some of her financial expenses & has made sure to keep that from his mother as he knows that she won’t appreciate it. Areesha suggests Faseeha to take some help of Shama & in order to stop with this financial help that is given to Appa Jee & Mashal, they bring both these ladies to their homes. Faseeha knows that her husband Abbas was not in a favor of this plan but she still takes Shama on board to make it happen!

The first episode of Kun Fayakun unfolded interestingly where all the characters got a thorough introduction & the scenario was set. Even though the first episode did focus on the characters not having good intentions, I loved how there were some of those scenes which were emotional & heart-warming. I am sure there is so much more to this story but after this episode I know for sure that the relationship of Appa Jee & Mashal is going to be my favorite part of this entire drama. I remember loving the character of Naani in Shehr e Zaat, I feel we will get to fall in love with Appa Jee’s character in Kun Fayakun too.

Closing Thoughts – Amazing:

Overall, the first episode of Kun Fayakun was absolutely amazing. I had such a great time watching it & I can not wait to learn more about these characters & find out how the story will unfold. I must say the direction was spot on where the director kept on shifting focus on each & every character to show what sort of contribution they will have in the story later. Despite it being the first episode, it didn’t just seem new or out of the place because everything was done so well & effortlessly that it all clicked & made perfect sense. I have nothing but good things to say about the first episode or Kun Fayakun. Zarnish Khan looked ravishing & she is an effortless actor. It was so good to see Nargis Rasheed after a long time, I am sure she has been appearing in different dramas but I have seen her after a while, I love her acting & she brings out the best in characters like these. Alizeh Shah was perfect as innocent Mashal. Imran Abbas as Hashir seemed perfect too. I can not wait to see the rest of the episodes. I loved the camera work & different angles. I also enjoyed the detailing & all the backgrounds, it showcased everyone’s lifestyle but it was beautiful how the feel of Appa Jee’s house was so fresh & homely. I must say, the dialogues were brilliant too. I have nothing but high expectations from Kun Fayakun. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Kun Fayakun.

Khaas Episode 11 Story Review – Brilliant

Opening Thoughts – Brilliant:

Ohkay so, this episode of Khaas was well-directed & everything unfolded in a brilliant manner. It’s the simplest of details that can add so much depth to a situation, this is what Sarwat Nazeer excels in & props to the director for that attention to detail which has actually made Khaas worthwhile. Also, it is getting quite interesting to explore the characters of Saba & especially Ammar, it all is being brilliantly done!

Saba Has Hit The Rock Bottom:

Saba scored a golden opportunity of proving Ammar wrong by getting a job at his firm & Ammar couldn’t take it. For Ammar it was a slap on his ego because he wanted to make sure Saba obliges to his orders. Ammar doesn’t want Saba to do anything because that gave him the upper hand over her & to the world, Ammar could prove that his wife was nothing without his favors, she didn’t have an identity of her own. Saba’s job was basically against the image that Ammar had created & the impression he wanted to have on others that Ammar was taking care of Saba in such a way that she didn’t need to do anything. Controlling Saba actually made Ammar feel powerful & because Saba took that power away from him, Ammar couldn’t handle it!

Saba was dragged down yet again. She was made to feel like she was nothing & she did the wrong thing yet again. Saba decided to pour her heart out & she was faced with a bitter truth that she was just being ungrateful because Ammar was nothing but an ideal husband to her. Saba has no idea how everything has been going against her & she will learn it slowly & steadily. Facing constant humiliation in the name of marriage, losing a child & being blamed for pursuing her dream, this is the worst phase of Saba’s life but unfortunately, no one around her will ever understand!

Saba lost her child & Ammar was guilty that the way he manhandled her must’ve also been one of the contributing factors but then after seeing how Kanwal was speaking against Saba & making an issue out of the fact that Saba hid her pregnancy from them, Ammar felt at ease. That particular emotion of guilt that Ammar felt was portrayed brilliantly by Ali Rehman, like it was so obvious that he was feeling a little uneasy about what Saba was going through but because he thinks he makes no mistakes, he didn’t own it. Fakhir’s call on Saba’s phone is also going to create a problem for her later on because in Ammar’s family, Nida is a witness of the fact that Saba was in touch with Fakhir over phone calls. Right now it did not occur to Ammar but later, he will also use that against Saba!

Saba’s father Faraz saw what was happening but in stead of giving Saba a chance to explain herself, he continued to lecture her because despite having all the experience in the world, he could not see through Ammar & formed his opinion on the face value that Ammar showed to him. I liked how Farah seemed a little dethatched to everything that Kanwal said about Ammar & in stead she was concerned about Saba. Ever since Sonia came, she made sure to let everyone know about Ammar’s weird behaviour & attitude with Saba, may be that is why for the first time in stead of speaking against her, Farah was seen feeling for Saba!

Closing Thoughts – So Good:

Overall, this entire episode of Khaas was exceptionally well-made. In this episode I enjoyed reading the emotions that all the characters expressed, at times little details like these make things very intricate & interesting. I am glad that a drama that started off on a weaker note has now become so good. The acting has been brilliant as well. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Khaas.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

Pakistani Movies You Will Love To Watch In 2019

Pakistani Movies To Watch In 2019 – Pakistani film industry has come a long way. There was a time when Pakistani movies were made for specific kind of viewers but that is not the case now. Every year Pakistani filmmakers make different genres of movies which target the viewers which were once completely forgotten by the filmmakers. Those actors who had attached themselves to the drama industry alone, now are seen showing more interest in working in Pakistani Movies. The quality is only getting better with time and it won’t be wrong to say that there is something for everyone in these films every year. The viewers enjoy watching their favorite stars on the big screen and have been supporting the Pakistani cinema by watching even those films which are not always the best.

Here is a list of Pakistani movies which shouldn’t be missed. Some of them have already released and others are the much anticipated films which will be worth watching.

Director: Saqib Malik
Producer: Saqib Malik (Page 33 Films)
Cast: Meera, Osman Khalid Butt, Amna Illyas, Mohsin Abbas Haider, Ali Kazmi, Nisho, Nayyar Ejaz & others.

The film Baaji explores a somewhat different topic which hasn’t been explored in any other Pakistani movie yet. The idea for this film probably came from the drama “Mein Sitara”. The makers did a great job of making sure that this idea was presented in an entertaining way on the big screen. Baaji is a film with a big heart, it is magical in many ways and the stars look great on the silver screen.

Dar Khuda Se Episode 3 – Story Review

Opening Thoughts – Interesting:

Ohkay so, this episode of Dar Khuda Se didn’t really take the story forward but elaborated all that happened in the previous episode. The initial episodes of this drama have surely been dedicated to the circumstances of all the characters & the choices that they have made to reach to this point in their lives. The direction of this drama is to the point & the straight forward execution is definitely making it interesting to watch.

Everyone Has Something Going On:

Shahwez got married to Gul because of his ulterior motives but now he uses her age as an excuse to continue with his wrongdoings. It is like in this entire equation, Shahwez sees himself as a victim that is why he continues to do what his heart desires because he just feels unhappy with the fact that he is married to a woman older to him. Even though Shahwez already is at an unhappy place in this marriage, the reminders that Gul gives to him about this entire business belonging to her & her son also makes it obvious that this is another reason why Shahwez does all that he do, it is like he is unable to see all the comforts & luxuries he has in his life because of Gul but just makes an issue out of the fact that she hurts his ego & uses it as an excuse!

Afreen left the job which bothered Shahwez a lot & even though he tried to contact her, Afreen made sure to not let that happen. Junaid respects Afreen & because he has seen the kind of girl she is, he suggested his wife to meet Afreen & see if she’d like Afreen to get married to her brother. Junaid knows that Afreen is getting harassed at the hands of Shahwez & a girl like her doesn’t deserve to be treated that way, therefore he thought it would kind of help Afreen if she gets married.

Tamkeen has her own issues, slowly & steadily inferiority complexes are creeping in her mind & heart. Tamkeen keeps on comparing herself to Afreen & she feels useless plus Tamkeen wants to get out of this house as soon as possible, that is why she has started to develop interest in the sabzi wala. Tamkeen is just eager for a change in her life & she feels marriage is the only way out that is why she makes an issue about the fact that her parents aren’t considerate about her!

Azhar tried to persuade Afreen to continue her job but when he saw that she had made up her mind & their father has clearly told him that he won’t allow him to get married at least before Afreen, Azhar decided to go ahead with the court marriage. Shehla’s mother is an opportunist & she has given Shehla a full edge to do what it takes to secure her place in Azhar’s life. Things will obviously get more complicated in the episodes to come & Shehla will only give Azhar’s family a hard time!

Closing Thoughts – Imran Abbas Steals The Show:

Overall, this episode of Dar Khuda Se was decent but didn’t offer much. As the scenarios will unfold, the drama will become more interesting. The acting of all the actors is really good but Imran Abbas steals the show with his perfect portrayal of a negative character like Shahwez. It is so good that Imran Abbas has decided to challenge himself with a character like this, it was much needed & it is nice to see that he has this kind of acting in him! Please share your thoughts about this episode of Dar Khuda Se.

Surkh Chandni Episode 7 & 8 Story Review – Brilliant Performances

Opening Thoughts – Brilliant Performances:

Ohkay so, this episode of Surkh Chandni gave the viewers a chance to see some outstanding performances from all the actors. One of the best things so far about Surkh Chandni has to be the pace as well because they make sure to cover one chapter of Aida’s life in each set of episodes. I hope as the drama progresses, they continue with the pace because it is definitely making this drama a great watch & is keeping everything quite gripping!

Aida Faces Rejection:

Aida was suffering from physical & emotional trauma but the court case & everything that came along it put her through a mental trauma too. Aida still hadn’t found that courage & confidence in herself & she was still struggling but Amaan & those who supported her thought they were doing the right thing by opening a lawsuit against Jawad but they were wrong.

Before the court case happened, it was nice to see how everyone like Amaan, Aida’s parents & Amaan’s mother were ready to do everything to make sure they win the case. Even though they wanted to help Aida but part of it was also their urge to get Jawad behind bars for what he had done, but unfortunately, things didn’t go according to their plan.

It has been very realistically shown that criminals like Jawad get the edge to do what they feel like because they have supporters around them who make sure their agendas are fulfilled. Shumaila has played a very important role in ruining Aida’s life because right from the beginning she knew exactly what Jawad had done but chose to side with him because of her own motives. Jawad also has got his mother’s support that is why he hasn’t thought about it for a second that he has been nothing but wrong all along. Shumaila has not only supported Jawad but has also made sure that Mukhtar never really questions her choices or doubts her. Even though Mukhtar did ask Shumaila if she saw Jawad’s face the day acid attack happened but she easily convinced him & talked him out of it.

Unfortunately, Aida lost the case & not only that, it came with another label which made it easier for everyone to blame her for what she has been through. It indeed was realistically portrayed that in times like these, no one really cares to find out the truth or give benefit of the doubt to the victim, in stead everyone finds it very easy to believe the gossip or rumours because it seems convenient. In Aida’s case, her own brother Mukhtar chose to believe the court’s verdict because he thought it was easier option to get rid of her.

Amaan’s involvement in Aida’s life & in general has to be the most endearing part of this drama. The way Amaan made sure to let Aida know that he was going to be there every step of the way was sweet but because Aida has been emotionally & mentally scattered, she couldn’t really see through his honesty. Aida still loves Amaan but because she has been through so much, she only feels like a liability to him & the thought of nurturing this relationship has slipped Aida’s mind. Amaan & his mother have proved that they genuinely want to help Aida come out of this nightmare but things around her have become so complicated that she even is not looking for a way out & has probably given up any hope that she ever had. Aida is just ready to take what comes her way & in her mind it is mostly humiliation & rejection.

Closing Thoughts – Intense & Gripping:

Overall, this episode of Surkh Chandni was vey intense & gripping. The direction has been strong too & all the actors are performing brilliantly. I particularly liked a few scenes a bit more because all the lead actors acted amazingly in those scenes; Amaan barging into Jawad’s house after losing the case, Jawad going to harass Aida & laughing as she beat him up, Aida pushing Amaan away from her & telling him to go, Sohai, Asad & Osman were brilliant in those scenes especially. The preview of the next episode suggests that may be Aida’s father will commit suicide, but I am glad that the lady from the NGO is following up, which means she might bring Aida out of this setting. Also, I must say the actor playing the role of doctor has been very convincing too, usually those who play doctors in our dramas make it very obvious that they don’t know how to act but this actor surely does. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Surkh Chandni.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,

Rating: 5 Stars

One of 2019’s block buster Do Bol needs no introduction. A Sarwat Nazeer script which in simplest of manners showed the struggles of a girl who belonged to such a family which never made her feel that she belonged to them. How her father’s attitude shaped her personality and how one mistake of her landed her with such a person that she despised and then falls in love with. Do Bol’s story showed all sorts of emotions and because all of that was executed in such a simple and relatable manner, it ended up garnering immense popularity. Gaiti and Badar’s couple was well and truly loved by the audience. It was also brilliantly shown by Sarwat Nazeer that how love at times can make you selfish and how it also makes you selfless. Badar loved Gaiti selfishly and selflessly which made it quite interesting to see and explore. Do Bol is a perfect example of how simple scripts when rightly executed can turn into a blockbuster drama. Hira Mani and Affan Waheed were beyond brilliant in Do Bol and all the supporting actors did an amazing job as well.

Anaa

Writer: Samira Fazal

Rating: 4 Stars

Anaa’s story is relatively simple but it has a definite appeal. The new faces in this drama and solid performances from some of the more experienced actors make this drama interesting. Anaa isn’t the kind of play which is perfect in every way but it definitely has a lot going for it. Naimal Khawar and Usman Mukhtar’s on-screen chemistry has made the viewers fall in love with their track even though it can be really repetitive at times. Hania Aamir’s portrayal is brilliant as usual, she makes you feel for her character and keeps your interest alive. Anaa is a nice break from some of the more heavy duty dramas, it is an entertaining play which keeps you looking forward to more. This drama also explores relationships, the role ego plays in destroying relations and most importantly there are no black and white characters in this drama.

Anaa Best Pakistani Dramas

Meer Abru is a story of love, misunderstanding and betrayal. This drama revolves around the love story of Meer and Abru and shows how circumstances create differences between them. Meer Abru is the kind of drama that has everything to offer, from drama to some light-hearted moments and a brilliant portrayal of all kinds of emotions that a person goes through. Another strength of this drama is that every single character has something to offer and they all contribute in making this drama complete. Meer Abru’s fast pace has also helped in keeping the interest of the viewers intact Nd brilliant direction has made it a drama worth tuning to. Meer and Abru’s chemistry is one of the strongest points of this drama as well. Sanam Chaudhry, Noor Hassan and Mirza Zain Baig are the stars of this drama. Saad Qureshi and Srha Asghar have also showcased their acting skills in a brilliant manner. Meer Abru has scored a spot in this list for all the right reasons.

Meer Abru Best Pakistani Dramas

Inkaar

Writer: Zafar Mairaj

Director: Kashif Nisar

Rating: 5 Stars

Inkaar is one of the more heavy duty dramas in this list which deals with a sensitive topic and does so with great responsibility. The writer has taken inspiration from real-life incidents and has done complete justice to a difficult script. Inkaar highlights the importance of consent in a relationship and shows why some men find it impossible to respect women the way they deserve to be respected. Yumna Zaidi, Imran Ashraf, Sami Khan, Munazzah Arif and Rehan Sheikh’s performances in this drama give it the edge it needs to stand out. The makers of Inkaar have kept everything real and to the point without compromising on showing details which were important to make the viewers understand the characters and relate to the story. Inkaar is meaningful as well as engaging, definitely one of the best Pakistani dramas this year.

Inkaar Best Pakistani Dramas

Khud Parast

Writer: Radain Shah

Director: Abis Raza

Producer: Big Bang Entertainment

Cast: Shehzad Sheikh, Ramsha Khan, Hassan Ahmed, Nausheen Shah, Sajid Syed, Asma Abbas, Saife Hassan & others.

Rating: 4 Stars

Khud Parast was one such drama that had an interesting story line and intense performances to its credit. Even though in the beginning it did come across as if the team was trying to show hijab as a symbol of oppression but later the story changed and it showed how imposing something on someone while committing mistakes yourself is not the way to preach someone to come to the right path. Khud Parast’s plot basically revolved around hypocrisy and the destruction it brings along in the lives of those who rely on it. Ramsha Khan and Shehzad Sheikh carried this drama on their shoulders. Asma Abbas did complete justice to the character of Bakhtawar and she made her scenes absolutely intense. The direction of Khud Parast remained consistently good and never did the director go off-track. Khud Parast definitely deserves a spot in this list because it sure was a very good drama.

Khuda Parast Best Pakistani Dramas

Baba Jani

Writer: Faiza Iftikhar

Director: Ali Faizan Anchan

Producer: Connect Studios

Cast: Faysal Qureshi, Madiha Imam, Savera Nadeem, Saba Hameed, Faryal Mehmood, Tipu Sharif, Jinaan Hussain, Amir Qureshi, Arisha Razi, Ali Ansari, Afshan Qureshi, Shehryar Zaidi & others.

Rating: 3.5 Stars

Baba Jani was Faysal Qureshi’s first production and he deserves all the credit for choosing a mature script and not starting his production career with a typical drama. Baba Jani was an entertaining family drama which had a one-of-a-kind hero. Most of the Pakistani dramas revolve around female protagonists but this one had a different and appealing male protagonist. There were times when the editing as well as the direction wasn’t up to the mark but overall Baba Jani was a superb play with some really positive messages. Faysal Qureshi, Madiha Imam and Savera Nadeem’s performances and characters in particular were an absolute treat to watch. If this show wasn’t stretched so much then it would have been even better.

Baba Jani Best Pakistani Dramas

Tawaan

Writer: Rahat Jabeen

Director: Syed Wahab Jaffri

Producer: Momina Duraid Productions

Cast: Moomal Khalid, Emaad Irfani, Sajida Syed, Hina Bayat, Hina Altaf, Munawwar Saeed, Asad Siddique, Fazila Qazi, Farhaan Ali Agha & others.

Rating: 4 Stars

Tawaan was a feel good drama that revolved around the struggles of two individuals who in the most unfavourable circumstances end up together and then fall in love. Tawaan was one such drama that did show the couple facing its fair share of hardships but still overcoming everything because they believed in open communication. Even though the lead couple of Maryam and Shehroz and their chemistry was the best thing about Tawaan, the elderly couple of Shehroz’s parents and their bickering was such an enjoyable aspect of Tawaan as well. Tawaan came as a surprise where it just showed how two level-headed individuals made everything work for them by relying on patience and positivity. Moomal Khalid and Emaad Irfani played the characters of Maryam and Shehroz to perfection and their chemistry was sweet yet strong. Tawaan was such a drama that had a complex story but the manner with which it was told simply and executed brilliantly made it very special.

Tawaan Best Pakistani Dramas

Suno Chanda 2

Writer: Saima Akram Chaudhry

Director: Ahson Talish

Producer: MD Productions

Cast: Iqra Aziz, Farhan Saeed, Raza Talish, Nabeel Zuberi, Mashal Khan, Samina Ahmed, Nadia Afghan, Sohail Sameer, Arjumand Rahim, Tara Mehmood, Adnan Shah Tipu, Sami Khan, Sabeena Farooq & others.

Rating: 3.5 Stars

Suno Chanda 2 provided the kind of entertainment it promised by giving the viewers a lot to laugh about. It stayed true to its theme and the script was engaging enough. Shadana’s character in particular kept the viewers coming back for more. Nadia Afghan’s performance was the highlight of this show and some of the new characters were interesting as well. It won’t be wrong to say that in this season Arsal and Jiya’s relationship was somewhat repetitive and it lost its previous appeal. Arjumand Rahim, Raza Talish and Sabeena Farooq’s characters and their performances were an entertaining addition to this serial. Suno Chanda 2 was the kind of mindless entertainment which had enough going for it to keep the viewers engaged right till the end.

Anaa Episode 19 – 20 Story Review – The Secret Is Out

These two episodes were fast paced and the true colors of most of the characters were revealed in these episodes. Episode 19 gave hope that Izza and Altamash might finally accept and acknowledge their feelings for each other but the developments in the next episode made it impossible for Izza to even stay in touch with Altamash. Nazia executed her plan to take revenge from the Shamshernagar family and that changed everything for everyone involved. Nazia’s negativity is growing with every passing episode and it seems like there is no end to the hatred between these families. Daneen got very little screen time in the latest episode but her frame of mind and stance was made quite clear in episode 19.

Anaa Episode 19 - 20 Story Review - The Secret Is Out

Flawed Yet Interesting Characters

The characters and the story continues to be interesting although at times it is more twisted than anything else. Even though Daneen is acting like a fool but you can’t help but feel for her since a lot of what is happening is Areesh’s fault as well. Areesh’s character is a lot like that of Jamil from Aangan – he is always confused about what he wants from life and he lacks integrity. Some of the dialogues also remind me of the character Shehzad Sheikh played in Khud Parast. Although Areesh’s character isn’t the least bit likable but Shehzad Sheikh has done complete justice to it by translating all of his weaknesses superbly on screen. Areesh needs to grow up big time and he is too impulsive, emotional and at times selfish. Having a father like Ghazanfar and a daadi who is so headstrong could be the reason why Areesh never learned to make decisions on his own and stick to them.

Anaa Episode 19 - 20 Story Review - The Secret Is Out

Nazia’s character is like that of Bari Apa (played by Savera Nadeem) and I have a feeling that her end too will be a lot like that character. Daneen’s father is completely missing in action which doesn’t add up since he was always so close to Daneen and now after making such a big decision, the viewers needed to see what he has been feeling and going through. Saif’s decision to punish Daneen showed what he was capable of and even though Daneen has not been the ‘perfect wife’ but she definitely deserves better than Saif. Daneen continues to be stubborn and unreasonable therefore this is another scenario which is quite messed up. She had the option of going home with her phupo but the fact that her father completely disowned her could be another reason why she is relying on Areesh more than ever.

The change in Altamash’s attitude was the most positive development in these episodes. For a change he apologized to Izza, admitted he was wrong and told her the truth about Nashwa. Some of Izza’s dialogues were repetitive but it was good to see this track moving to the next phase. I am waiting to see Altamash’s reaction once he finds out what Nazia has done. I liked the way Izza told Kabir off and the way Kabir tried to dictate to her was also completely in line with his character. Kabir’s character is actually quite interesting. Nashwa also has a sudden interest in Altamash and she is no longer trying to win him over to please her father.

Anaa Episode 19 - 20 Story Review - The Secret Is Out

Ghazanfar’s ‘ghairat’ and ‘izzat’ once again took a backseat in these episodes when he was shown confronting Altamash and Saif both. Ghazanfar and Nazia are more twisted than they are flawed. They let their hatred and ego dictate to them – for them ‘winning’ is everything.

Final Remarks

It isn’t very often that such messed up scenarios and flawed characters have such an appeal. Anaa continues to be entertaining in its own way and a huge credit for that goes to the director and the actors involved. Even with things getting so dark at times, the overall feel of this play is never too gloomy.

Do share your thoughts about these episodes of Anaa.

Inkaar Episode 17 Story Review – Powerful

This latest episode of Inkaar was terribly upsetting and with this episode Hajra lost her biggest support. The dialogues, situations and performances continue to be impressive. The clarity with which the writer has covered every minute detail covering the importance of consent in a relationship makes Inkaar the best drama on the subject. Kashif Nisar has given this perfectly written script the right treatment. The director has translated this story as honestly on screen as it could be told.

New Developments

Tonight’s episode opened with Hajra giving a beautiful answer to a difficult question. Hajra’s dialogues were meaningful and deep. Just because a girl sends a man she likes romantic messages, it doesn’t mean that this man has the right to do what Rehan Chaudhry did with Hajra. There can be a difference between what you say and what you actually want. Hajra explained that in the best manner possible. Had she wanted to get physical with Rehan, she wouldn’t have ran away that day. Later on, the way Hajra’s father stood by his daughter’s side was heart-warming. While it was shown that her father did not judge her or ‘hate’ her because of the mistakes she had made in her past, it was also shown that he was obviously affected by everything he saw and heard in the courtroom. This was a true depiction of a difficult situation.

Inkaar Episode 17 Story Review - Powerful

The feelings of all the other characters were shown in detail and quite convincingly as well. The detail with which everything has been covered without slowing down the pace of the show is what makes this drama so good. Rehan’s real mother’s feelings are completely different from how his stepmother looks at this situation. His real mother wants him to learn and mend his ways, she also blames herself because she let his father take him away from her. The stepmother on the other hand couldn’t care less, she has always looked for ways to make Rehan happy without taking into consideration that such gratification might destroy his personality altogether. Although Gullu badshah’s end was extremely saddening but it was definitely realistic. Had the Chaudhry been shown as a helpless man, it wouldn’t have been convincing. In the end Shayan’s father helped him to get Gullu badshah out of the way. Gullu died a hero’s death and the last scene covering how he wasn’t anticipating this at all was simply amazing. Iftikhar Iffi, the actor playing the role gave a brilliant performance throughout and I am sure everyone is waiting to find out how this will affect Hajra’s case. Hajra has lost the edge she had and Chaudhry will be more confident than ever now.

Inkaar Episode 17 Story Review - Powerful

Hajra and Rehan’s mother’s scene was one of my favorite scenes tonight – the dialogues and performances made this such a powerful scene. Rehan’s mother it seems was trying to do damage control when she asked Hajra for forgiveness. Hajra’s reply couldn’t have been more apt. It has been great watching Hajra’s confidence and determination but the people she is fighting are much more powerful and cruel than she could have imagined.

Shayan’s role has been relegated to the background for now. He has been shown as a decent man who is so in love with Hajra that he simply follows her lead and is at times incapable of taking decisions on his own. Hajra does not want Shayan back in her life right now but I am hoping that she will start sharing her fears and insecurities with him soon.

The Preview

The preview of the upcoming episode was alarming but hopefully the CCTV footage will surface from somewhere and the tables will turn. Rehan still thinks Hajra will marry him! Waiting for Shayan to play a bigger role in the picture and eagerly waiting for Rehan to pay for what he did to Hajra.

Inkaar Episode 17 Story Review - Powerful

Final Remarks

This episode of Inkaar was powerful. All the actors playing the leading roles and the supporting roles have acted so well which definitely adds to the appeal of this drama. Kashif Nisar is one of those few directors in our industry who knows which actor can do justice to a specific character. Even the relatively new faces are so well-suited for the characters they are playing.

Do share your thoughts about tonight’s episode of Inkaar.

Cheekh Episode 24 Story Review – Tragedy Pe Tragedy

Opening Thoughts – Balaa Season 2:

Ohkay so, Cheekh has turned out to be Balaa part 2. I think while writing this script, Zanjabeel Asim Shah wanted the viewers to scream their lungs out after having their patience tested, hence the title Cheekh. This a typical approach of the writer where she is throwing one loss after another Mannat’s way to show how bechari & zakhmi the so-called sherni is. Damini movie is famous for the dialogue Tareekh Pe Tareekh, I am sure Cheekh will become famous for Tragedy Pe Tragedy. 🙄

Tragedy Pe Tragedy: 🙄

This entire episode was dedicated to the demise of Mannat’s mother & everything that followed. In stead of feeling any emotion, I sat there waiting for this episode to end so that something else happens in the next one. Not sure why Mannat saw her mom’s funeral as an opportunity to play Pakran Pakrai with everyone because Mannat running around & all of them trying to chase her was actually very funny. Mannat felt guilty because when her mother came to meet her for the last time, she didn’t really speak to her. I am guessing now another 5 6 episodes will only show Mannat’s guilt & then she finally moving on but for now it seems we’d have to face more rona dhona! 🙄

Everyone in this episode kept on crying. It was good to see Shehwar back & not only that, she also told her mother that she still considers them all as her family so I am sure now when the case will reopen, she will agree to testify against Wajih. Watching Ramzan crying hysterically to mourne the loss of Mannat’s mother actually made me laugh out loud. To be honest, I love episodes like these which provide subliminal comedy. It seems the doctor who testified against Mannat was having second thoughts but then Aqil told him to start giving Mannat doses to worsen her mental health. Let’s hope we don’t get to see that happening because it would mean even more rona dhona & I am running out of patience already! 🙄

Closing Thoughts – My Ears Are Bleeding:

This episode of Cheekh was boring & didn’t do much. Even though the actors are getting to showcase their acting & skills but other than that, there’s nothing special about the storytelling. I have started to loathe the OST & the hey hey hey hey background track, they have been overused to the core & they make my ears bleed. I know this might sound creepy & random at the same time but when Wajih was telling Yawar to find himself a girl friend, I don’t know why I felt that Bilal Abbas Khan was trying to copy Sajal Ali’s expressions, lol. May be because he has worked with her in O Rangreza so he must’ve picked an expression or two from the expression queen, but it actually made me laugh. Please share your thoughts about this ‘seriously’ ‘funny’ episode of Cheekh. 🙄

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

Yasir Hussain Takes A Jab At Mahira Khan’s Acting

Yasir Hussain remains in the news less for his career and more for his controversial statements. He just does not keep anything to himself and keeps landing in controversy for his crass jokes and overly blunt statements. He is on a roll again as he just denied his insensitive joke on the award show that landed him in severe controversy. He denied t on a talk show.

His statement about Hania Aamir also got him severe backlash when he mocked her over her skin insecurities and his comment on the transgender community also got him in hot waters. However, he is back again and this time he had to say something about Mahira Khan. As usual, he was doing a Qand A on his Insta story and when a fan asked him to choose between Mahira Khan and Iqra Aziz, he didn’t choose Iqra in a one-word answer but also went on to say that Mahra Khan needs to learn acting:

Well, everyone has a right to give their opinions but Yasir knows how to cause controversy too!

Ishq Zahe Naseeb Episode 2 – Story Review

Opening Thoughts – Setting The Grounds:

Ohkay so, this episode of Ishq Zahe Naseeb took the story forward a little & showed how things were shaping up in Gauhar’s present & what happened in Sameer’s past that shaped his present & future. Even though the theme of this drama is completely different to what we have ever seen before, but I like that they are setting the plot in a most conventional manner in order to help everyone relate to the characters & understand them a bit better first!

Two Completely Different Tracks:

Gauhar is surrounded by a lot of problems, her family is struggling but her association with Kashif keeps her spirits up. In such a dense situation, Kashif is a breath of fresh air for Gauhar. Even though the entire family is well aware of their problems, it is nice to see them being optimistic & openly having conversations about it as a family rather than suffering alone. At times it does look like Gauhar lives in a bubble, but when she is with her family, she actively participates in all the family discussions & even thinks of finding solutions too.

The most interesting thing to note was everyone’s reaction to Jahangir’s proposal for Gauhar, I enjoyed seeing how everyone saw it as a nuisance rather than a blessing. Also, in stead of being worried about the prospect of ending up with Jahangir, Gauhar was making fun of it with Kashif & taking it lightly because she knew even her family wasn’t thrilled with this proposal. Jahangir’s mother has obviously tried to pressurize her brother & his family to agree to this marriage using the debt as a threat because she knows that her son Jahangir doesn’t stand a chance otherwise.

Gauhar’s brother Saleem spotted Gauhar with Kashif & that’s what put her in a tight spot but again it was good that Gauhar was given a chance to explain herself & even Bushra supported her. So far, nothing about Gauhar’s side of the story is new or unique but it is being told in a convincing manner & it obviously is leading up to the story where Sameer & Gauhar’s paths will cross.

Sameer’s step mother is well aware of Sameer’s secret because she came in his life when he was just a boy. Sameer’s step mother seems stern & it looks like both she & Sameer gave each other a hard time & then despite their disliking for eachother, they somehow learned to co-exist. Even though they both have been together for a long long time, there’s still some reservation & hesitation between them but now it seems to be coming more from Sameer because at this stage of her life, his step mother yearns for some attention & company.

Sameer actually decided to give Zoya a chance because he saw it as an opportunity to overcome his personality issues. Sameer seemed tired of living a lie that is why seeing how confident & dynamic Zoya was, Sameer actually believed that she will pull him out of this darkness that resides within him. It seems Sameer’s step mother wasn’t on board with this decision because she could see that Zoya’s life will be ruined when she will finally get to know the truth about Sameer’s personality. Sameer actually thought that he was in love with Zoya, he used that as an excuse to convince his mother but it actually just was his way of overcoming his issues with the help of Zoya. For Sameer Zoya was basically a distraction which he believed will help him!

The last scene showing the conversation between the two characters was quite interesting. The way Sameer spoke about both the characters saying ‘hum’ suggested that he was referring to two of his personalities. It still is to be made clear whether Sameera is Sameer’s 2nd personality or his alter ego but nonetheless, it all actually is quite interesting. Sameer seems normal but Sameera is his dark side & not only that, all the negativity that stems in Sameer’s mind is basically Sameera’s doing too. I can’t wait to find out more about it but I am definitely liking how we are being slowly introduced to this aspect of the story!

Closing Thoughts – Unconventional:

Overall, this episode of Ishq Zahe Naseeb was decent. Yes, this drama hasn’t had an extraordinary start but what makes it worth tuning to is the story which will be told in the later stages of the drama. Gauhar’s side of the story for now doesn’t seem too appealing but it all is definitely going to get more interesting. The preview of the next episode promised a lot more drama as well. I liked Gauhar’s father’s character a lot in this episode, it was nice to see his optimistic approach but it was also interesting to see that his wife & family felt he needed to do more than just being optimistic about the situation. Sonya Hussyn, Jinaan Hussain, Sami Khan & Zahid Ahmed are surely doing good & I can’t wait to see their brilliant performances in the episodes to come. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Ishq Zahe Naseeb.

Keep Supporting,
