Noor e Zindagi Review – The End!
When a couple of episodes ago, Saleem seemed to come to his senses I wondered why the next episode was not the last one – until I watched it and realized he had not truly come to his senses. He had given up Gulshan but had not changed his ways entirely and was still short with Noor. I suppose heart attack zaroori tha and he finally was able to tell Noor what she meant to him. Man!
Twenty nine episodes of a drama which could have made much more of an impact in at least ten less episodes. The first ten or so episodes were nothing to write much about – literally- which is why I only began reviewing it after those episodes. While the episodes that followed were interesting, entry of Gulshan and the whole dragged out affair were anything but.
I am not sure whether the original story was dragged out in such a way or the director chose to, either way even though I enjoyed the drama at times, most of the time I found it hard to sit through. Jibran Syed and Ayesha Khan act really well which is probably why I continued watching. Whether it is because it is a Geo production, actually scratch that because not all Geo productions have this feel, but even when I watched an episode on TV, it did not have a pleasing effect.
I was drawn to Serwat Nazir’s stories after I watched Socha Na Tha – until that went haywire too – and also of course, Besharam. Even though those of us who are die hard romantics may like to see the husband appreciating and falling in love with his wife, I am finding it a bit tedious to have to see in one too many drama how he goes totally astray and then returns to a forgiving wife. While the last episode kept focusing on how Noor would have urged her daughter to make her marriage work, I am not sure being the sacrificial lamb is always the best step forward. Anyway, to each his own.
Would I recommend this drama to anyone? Only if they were prepared to fast forward quite a few scenes, (read episodes) and if they did not know the end and wondered if Noor and Saleem live happily ever after. What did you all think of this drama? Would love to hear your thoughts – sola aanay sachh!

Noor E Zindagi Episodes 21 & 22 Review – Opposites Attract?
Exhausted – that is how I feel when I see Noor and Saleem together now. I actually feel bad for both of them for they are sooo different and while we have all heard of opposites attracting (something I never thought made sense but oh well) – here, attraction ka ‘a’ bhi nahin raha if it was ever there at all! The news of Noor’s pregnancy did not bring Saleem closer to Noor as she had hoped. These two episodes were a better watch especially since there was no Gulshan in the second one but even though there were Noor-Saleem scenes, sadly they were not heart -warming ones.
Saleem finds himself lapping up the attention Gulshan showers on him. He has fallen hook, line but probably not sinker for we do not see him having romantic conversations as such or entertaining thoughts of marriage, etc just yet. That gives me a small ray of hope that this whole scenario might be nipped in the bud but only time – or a further few episodes will tell! I do not want to dislike Saleem and when I say I feel bad for him too I do not mean to give him a free pass for being mean and insulting to Noor for nobody has the right to hurt another’s feelings. But for so long he has been given free rein in the house and being the sort of personality he has become, I can see how Noor’s constant attempts at correcting him may get under his skin. The reminders to brush his teeth, take his shoes off, wash his hands, while are seemingly only good things but trying to drill them into a grown man, her husband on top of that and someone who is not particularly smitten by her – can not be the best step forward. Saleem, on the other hand, does not care anymore what Noor or her family may think of him and I cringed at the dinner table scene where he would take the wrong meaning out of every statement Noor made. Anyways, yes Saleem is glaringly much more at fault here and it takes two to tango so if Noor can make the effort to try to make the marriage work, Saleem should try to.
The ‘kasam’ scene definitely left a bad taste in my mouth especially an insight into Saleem’s mind later. Which is what made me think how very different his way of thinking is and how poles apart their approach to life is. Their journey towards marital harmony is a really long road and that too not even guaranteed to meet at the same point. Noor has finally made it to the doctor and with even the doctor telling him off, I wonder whether it may have a positive effect on Saleem or send him off again to Gulshan, Nihari, Pulao & Co!
That was Noor and Saleem. Love is in the air except the air that these two breathe, it seems. So, Waseem and Zeb are growing fond of each other and have their families’ blessings. Noor sees a savior in Jalal in the form of a potential match for Sofia’s sister in law which would help save her own sister’s marriage. Not that that seems threatened for Adnan is clearly against the idea of a second marriage.
Now that news of Noor’s pregnancy is spreading, Gulshan’s mother will push her to go after Saleem with all guns blazing and it remains to be seen who comes out of this scarred and who does not. Given that this was the 22nd episode, I really hope things start moving along now and at this point I do not see how this can have a happy ending? To have a happy ending, Saleem needs to have a complete turnaround and to rush one in a couple of episodes does not make sense either. I was hoping to see a few good episodes of Noor and Saleem growing close and understanding each other but somehow I do not see that happening anytime soon. The charm of this dram is beginning to wear off and even Syed Jibran’s amazing acting is not managing to save it. The only thing I am curious about now is not how Saleem may or may not change, if Noor will find out about Gulshan, will Saleem marry Gulshan – nope, I am just wondering after pulao and nihari, what’s next in store for Saleem upon his next visit to Gulshan’s! Noor E Zindagi Episode 20 Review – Khawar’s Revenge
So, either it is because when you watch a drama without any strings attached you feel differently and when you sit and watch each scene and listen to each dialogue as a reviewer it is a different story – or, I have the anti Midas touch for any drama I think is interesting to review – suddenly stops being just that!! Or maybe these couple of episodes are just dragging the story a bit and the drama will hopefully get back on track soon especially as its nearing the end now – yes, hoping that must be it!
I had wondered what Khawar’s reasons may be to literally push Saleem towards Gulshan and now I know. He was definitely not a true friend, we had established that at the very start but I had thought he may be a mufta and just a faarigh person with warped ideas and beliefs and rubbing them off on his friend but he has a proper agenda now and that is to make sure Saleem falls for Gulshan and that Noor also suffers for having ‘meddled’ in his affairs and having a hand in Saleem seeing Khawar’s true colors. I am amazed that Saleem who can be so stubborn and obstinate when it suits him, chooses to fall for Khawar’s half baked statements and is chummy with him all over again. The conversation between the two at Saleem’s shop was very convincingly done where you could see Saleem being all chuffed up by the attention and respect Gulshan and her family were showering him with.
Although Noor and Saleem’s track is ‘supposedly’ the main one in this story, we also have a few other stories running simultaneously. A lot of screen time went into Waseem and Zeb’s story in the past few episodes and now the focus was more on Sofia, her brother and Mehru. I actually like Mehru and her husband’s relationship where the two find lots of comfort with each other so even though I felt bad for them with the shart Sofia’s mother in law has laid out, I wished there was more focus on Noor and Saleem. Noor still has not been able to tell Saleem about her pregnancy and I cringed when she is sitting reflecting and her mother in law echoes the same thought earlier as to how now that Saleem will hear of the baby he will change his attitude towards Noor. Masla he saara yeh hai in our dramas and society, ‘shaadi ho jaye, theek ho jaye ga’, ‘bacha ho jaye, theek ho jaye ga’, and the sad bit is that while the ever scheming saas/nand/bahu or desperate in love woman characters are sometimes hard to relate to, statements such as these are very common. Which is why even though this episode seemed to drag a bit, yet a lot of scenes and characters were quite easy to relate to. Noor’s thoughts as to how Saleem may change now, Saleem lapping up attention from new corners, Tabassum Khala’s statement as to how a man when ‘fed up’ with his wife is drawn towards seemingly greener pastures. It all happens far more often than we would like it to I suppose.
One thing I was thinking about now was how Saleem’s heart has totally hardened towards Noor. The complex of being lesser educated, the seed of suspicion of something between her and Waseem, hearing of her broken engagement – has that all made him so bitter? There were the moments when he would watch her and feel remorse for his behaviour, when he dressed in the suit to make her happy then missed her when she was away – has that all taken a backseat now that Khawar’s brainwashing and Gulshan’s chamak dhamak has blinded him? Speaking of blinding, uff what was with all the lighting in today’s episode? Especially in Noor and Gulshan’s scenes when the sunlight would flare in the background – very annoying.
There were very little in fact, wait there was no scene between Noor and Saleem in today’s episode and although Saleem’s antics, I know I know, make him a dislikable character but Syed Jibran’s acting is so delightful, the gold watch, the visibly chuffed up ego is so spot on I can not help but be impressed at how he has translated Saleem’s character so perfectly! I really can not stand Gulshan’s scenes for the way she speaks is OTT especially as she talks the same way to her mother and sister too! I feel my head must tilt at very odd angles in slow motion while following her scenes the way she cocks her head and gazes from side to side. Man!
Twenty episodes down, Saleem slowly but surely falling for Gulshan, Noor’s suffering in full swing, Sofia and Saas, Mehru and Saas – I do not see this drama ending in the next episode or two. I just hope things pick up and looking forward to seeing how Saleem reacts and his interaction with Noor when learning of the khushkhabri. Saleem miyan will get his nihari – I am left craving for some myself now! Please do share your thoughts about this episode.

Noor e Zindagi Episode 19 Review – The Other Woman!
This episode showed us the characters moving into new phases of their lives – Saleem’s inclination towards Gulshan Ara and her family, Noor’s pregnancy and positive developments in Waseem and Zeb’s relationship. I am not sure what Khawar stands to gain by pushing Saleem towards Gulshan Ara but he seems to be making it his mission and Saleem, out of a sense of duty for his friend and also to upkeep his reputation as the respectable businessman of the neighbourhood, agrees to go deliver the grocery items to Gulshan’s house. While I found Saleem’s reactions and expressions to be spot on, the actress playing Gulshan Ara seemed to grate on my nerves. Do women trying to ‘ensnare’ a man really talk and act like that and do men fall for it? Hmm!
As far as the drama goes, Saleem seemed to be lapping it up but for now he just seems to be loving the attention being paid to him by all these women and does not seem to be blown away by Gulshan just yet. His mother and siblings love him but hearing Noor’s praise being sung day and night has started to make him feel like she has his family wrapped round her little finger and they do not love, appreciate or respect him anymore. That feeling has only magnified of late and enter Tabassum khala and her daughters and all the respect and attention and sweet talk really boosted his ego. Saleem has always been easily influenced by his friends but what I liked was that beneath all that he would have a twinge of guilt where he would question his own actions sometimes. He seems to have left all that behind and is increasingly only annoyed with Noor.
Noor fainted hence Noor is pregnant. Because obviously the two go hand in hand in our dramas. While Saleem’s family and Noor are overjoyed with this news, Saleem is nowhere to be found. Saleem’s mother’s overly dramatic and excited actions seemed a bit OTT initially but I have come to see her as a simple woman who is easily overwhelmed by her feelings and does not try to channel them or present them a certain way. Her reaction at the pregnancy did make me smile. For the first time, I truly disliked Saleem for his retorts and snide remarks when Noor tries to tell him about her pregnancy. Also, for the first time, the whole ‘I want to say/ meri baat sunein’ being left hanging in the air did not bother me for Noor could hardly be expected to just blurt out the news of the baby when Saleem was being mean or yelling at her to hurry on with his breakfast. I felt for her then and while his remarks and attitude were uncalled for and unnecessarily unfair, there was a hint of truth to them for well, that is pretty much all she says to Saleem. I like Noor but I feel she is forever trying to correct him and that makes Saleem get his back up even more. It takes two to tango and Saleem has made zilch effort to make this marriage work but while it is lovely that Noor cares about his family, maybe she could have spent more time trying to connect with him and understand him. I am not saying she is to blame, not at all or that Saleem is justified in his behaviour, except that Noor is maybe a tad too perfect and holier than thou and that irks me, I mean Saleem (!!) just a bit.
I cringed at the conversation between Noor’s older sister and her husband. When she says that a sensible loving woman is able to keep her husband from being drawn to another man, I thought automatically of Noor. For Noor is sensible and she does love Saleem and is right there in his house – yet it obviously appears that he is about to be drawn to another woman’s charms. With the exception of Saleem, Waseem and Zeb have everyone’s blessings and I liked how Zeb’s father says to her that there is nothing wrong with liking someone. With the exception of Noor’s older sister’s mother in law, I also like how the elders in this drama are sensible and positive characters.
I am curious to see what Saleem’s reaction will be when he hears he is about to become a father and whether, like Noor believes, this will change his attitude towards her at all? Is Gulshan Ara a short time distraction or will this end in marriage and will Noor find out? The two dramas penned by Sarwat Nazir that I have watched lately present a happy ending for the female lead at least but not necessarily with the male lead so I am curious to see how this plays out. I had difficulty linking Ayesha Khan to Noor at first but her hurt and feelings were very aptly portrayed in tonight’s episode especially her final scenes with Syed Jibran. Syed Jibran has totally won me over as the insecure, uneducated man who is easily swayed by anyone but his family. His mannerisms and expressions especially in his scenes with Gulshan Ara were so good that even though I can see where this is headed and I should dislike him, he still made me laugh. To be honest, I missed that there was not much screen time devoted to Saleem and Noor’s scenes together in this episode and was not very interested in Gulshan Ara or Zeb and Waseem’s track and hope to see more of Noor and Saleem in the next episode for that is another reason I find myself drawn to dramas penned by Sarwat Nazir that she focuses on the lead couple’s relationship with each other. Noor e Zindagi – An Overview
Produced by Abdullah Kadwani and Asad Qureshi, directed by Siraj ul Haq and written by Sarwat Nazir, Noor e Zindagi airs on Geo on Fridays at 8pm PST. The writer Sarwat Nazir’s name is what drew me to this serial for at that time Besharam was on air and I had only just finished watching Socha Na Tha on ARY Zindagi which is penned by the same writer. Although Socha Na Tha dragged a bit, yet it was a decent watch so I felt Noor e Zindagi may be interesting too.
Noor e Zindagi is the story of two families, paths of which eventually cross when a marriage takes place. Noor Jahan (Ayesha Khan) is an educated woman who lives with her father (Shakeel) and younger sister Zeb. Noor is educated and respects her father and his wishes but is not afraid to stand up and speak for what she believes is right for herself and her family. She agrees to a match made by her father but breaks off the engagement when the family turns out to be greedy by exerting pressure on her father to meet their increasing and unreasonable demands with regards to jahez. In the wake of this broken engagement, her older sister is very worried and agrees to meet Saleem and his family through a rishtay walay aunty. The proposal had earlier been sent for her sister in law which they rejected partly because Saleem is uneducated and partly because her sister in law is interested in someone else.
Saleem (Jibran Syed) lives with his mother (Sajida Syed), a younger brother Waseem (Noman Habib) and younger sister Bano. He is uneducated, education being a luxury he could not afford when his father passed away when Saleem was young and he had to step up and start working at his father’s shop to support the rest of the family. He initially does not have a problem with Waseem’s education but egged on by his useless friends (Salim Mairaj) he puts a stop to his education too. Saleem has grown used to being the one in control and we see his father used to be an angry man too who did not hold any value for his wife’s opinion. Even his mother has no say once Saleem has decided upon something, not that she tries for she has grown used to cowering and accepting Saleem’s decisions as the final say.
The first few episodes, while introduced the characters, but were actually just scenes flitting between Saleem’s angry outbursts, his mothers’ endless tears, Noor’s holier than thou, perfectly composed demeanour right upto her perfectly curled hair and the ever pressing issue that supersedes all in our dramas – shaadi. Once Noor and Saleem get married, their families – and I – breathed a sigh of relief for that is when the drama began to get interesting. For those of you who have not watched this drama, I would suggest watching it from the 9th episode onwards for that is when the story kicks in.
I liked how Saleem was floored by his wife’s beauty and how he would have twinges of guilt pricking him each time he is short with her. His friend however is forever dispatching advice making sure his wife does not take ‘advantage’ of him and make him feel she is superior as she is more educated. We normally see a scheming mother in law or bhabhi/nand, but here it is the friend who is the meddling factor and leads Saleem astray. Noor believes Saleem is a good man but easily influenced by his friends but all this goes a step too far when Saleem begins suspecting there is something between Waseem and Noor.
Noor is shown to be educated, patient, responsible, understanding (you get the picture) yet she is strong and believes in standing up when pushed too far and leaves home when Saleem goes accuses her. However, I feel I have a hidden Saleem of sorts in me too for even I felt a bit prickly at times when she would forever be preaching although Saleem put it in a more apt and delightful way – ‘asaan ilfaaz mein baat kiya karo’ and ‘zaida ustaani na bano’, LOL! Let me clarify here that I only found those statements funny when he said them not in a taunting way but when he was actually perplexed by Noor’s words and those scenes were funny. However, his inferiority complex and thoughts planted by his friend make him lash out and say unforgivable things to Noor one too many times, I thought.
Things are far from smooth between these two but the drama is interesting as how Noor tries to make small changes in the household without trying to rock the whole boat and is not the whimpering wife we are all too used to seeing. Ayesha Khan used to be one of my favorite actresses but watching her in Shert, Tumharay Siwa and Mann Mayal, dramas which I abandoned halfway and cringed at her acting and characters, I was wary of this one. It took me a while to warm up to her character, rather seeing past Ayesha Khan to Noor. Jibran Syed as Saleem is perfect I have to say. The yelling was a bit overwhelming at first but the snide comments and inferiority complex are all portrayed so well by him. I am not sure anyone else would have made Saleem so convincing as Jibran Syed has been able to. The supporting actors and actresses such as Zeb, Waseem, Saleem’s mother and Noor’s older sister and brother in law have all chipped in to do their parts well too which I have begun to feel makes a huge difference in how I end up feeling about the play. I wince each time Salim Mairaj appears on the screen but that is because his character is nothing but trouble!
Noor’s personality and level headedness do not seem to be helping her much so I am not sure which way this drama is headed just yet. I do think if less episodes had been wasted before the marriage took place, the drama would have been more interesting for I am sure quite a few of us gave up on it after the first few episodes. Yesterday’s Nida Yasir’s show was about the theme of Mayoon. She had invited many celebrities like Benita, Nadia Hussain, Aliya Sarim, Isha Noor and Umm e Raheel. There has been uproar since Turkish Dramas started launching on every other Pakistani channel. It was initiated by Urdu1, then Express followed it and now Geo TV introduced a new show Noor. I doubt people will stop watching Pakistani Dramas just because a few Turkish shows were launched. Pakistani Dramas will always remain our first priority. Pakistani Drama viewership is too strong to be affected by a few foreign shows but I would agree with the Pakistani stars that have raised their voice against these shows, that it is unfair to them.
Noor is a hit Turkish drama and has been dubbed in various languages and played all across Arabic countries. It was originally aired in 2005-2007. Its original name is “Gümüş” but was aired with the title Noor in the Arabic World and become a household name everywhere. It has also been played in countries like Saudi Arabia, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, and Albania with different titles. It would not be wrong to say that it is the ‘Humsafar’ of the Arabic World. In Saudi Arabia alone, 3-4 million viewers admit to watching the program daily on the Saudi-owned MBC channel. The show’s final episode attracted a record 85 million Arab viewers. In Bulgaria, Noor was also very popular and every episode was watched by at least 2 million viewers. This show encouraged Arabs to visit Turkey and meet their favourite stars, Kivanc and Songul.
The Turkish drama Noor revolves around Mehmet played by Kivanc Tatlitug, who belongs to a rich family which is completely dominated by his grandfather. Mehmet has lost his love Nihat in a car accident and he had never recovered from the shock, his life has become meaningless ever since. His grandfather forces him to marry Noor (Songul Oden), a simple girl from a small town. Mehmet ends up leaving Noor at the altar, but eventually marry her but never truly accept her because for him she was ‘not his wife but his grandfather’s daughter in law’. The story is about Noor’s struggle to make a place in Mehmet’s life and become familiar with the ways of living of the upper class family.
I liked the OST of Noor. Its melody is beautiful and catchy. It is composed by Waqar Ali and sung by Alycia Dias. The melody is taken from the original drama and I must say it is beautiful.
The first episode seemed interesting. The play is very well dubbed in Urdu. And the main attraction of this show is Kivanc Tatlitug, who has become popular in Pakistan through his show Ishq e Mamnu, which went off air recently. Another of his show Manahil aur Khalil also launched on Express the same day as Noor. Will both these shows manage to make a place in viewer’s heart? I foresee a neck to neck competition between these two shows.
Geo TV has invested a lot in its promotion. You can see the advertisement played in every break. Will it be as famous as Ishq e Mamnu? Well the answer is ‘only time will tell.’

Pakistani actress Noor Bukhari publicly announced her decission to part ways with husband Wali Hamid after a little more than 2 years of marriage.
