Sar e Rah is a path-breaking drama which had so many lessons woven in just 6 episodes and we saw different characters coming up and shining in each role they were given. Muneeb Butt as Sarang was the one that stood out the most and his role as an intersex individual was appreciated by everyone. But at the same time, it caused a lot of controversy.

Maria B, the ace designer had come forward to share a clip of the drama and she had called Sar e Rah an agenda to sell trans identities in Pakistan. The scene starring Nabeel Zafar and the young Sarang stood out and caused a lot of backlash on social media.

This is what Maria B had said and it started a whole debate in the media:

Muneeb Butt had not really replied to the whole controversy and only said that Sarang was not a Trans but an intersex character. He has now replied to Maria B’s claim of Sar e Rah being an agenda and clarified his position in taking up that character.

Muneeb said that he is also a practising Muslim and he would not work on any agendas. If there was something wrong with the character, he would not have taken it up as his own family would not accept it, let alone the public. This is what he had to say:

Muneeb Butt is very talented and handsome Pakistani actor who has been in drama industry for quite some time. He has garnered fame through Khatoon Manzil. He has worked in Bandi, Kesa hay Naseeba, Silsilay, Koi Chand Rakh and Mujhey Vida Ker.

Recently, Muneeb Butt has appeared in Good Morning Pakistan for the promotion of his upcoming drama serial Baddua which started tonight on Ary Digital. In the show Muneeb accidentally revealed about the actresses he declined to work with.

Muneeb while replying to a question about his desire to work with one of his favorite heroine, revealed that he wants to work with Yumna Zaidi. Nida said that she isn’t talking about television actresses but wants a name of any film actress.

He then asked Amar Khan to help him in names, Nida then said Mahira & Saba are good options. Muneeb refuses the option and made awkward comment about Mahira & Saba.

He said, “How can I work with them, they are elder than me, I mean I will look younger, they are little elder than me”

Nida and Amar both got shocked. Nida also said, “what if you will get a chance to work with them?”. Muneeb said, “I will grow beard”. He then agreed to work with Iqra Aziz on Amar’s suggestion.

Muneeb Butt recently during an interview with BBC talked about this controversy.

“I said something else, and it turned out to be something else. I said it jokingly, it was just a joke. You took that joke completely out of the context, made headlines out of it that Muneeb Butt wants every woman to live in constant fear and God knows what they spread about me, but it didn’t affect me. The next day I said what I wanted to say in my video. Sensible people understood what I said and those people who don’t have any humor I cannot say anything to them” said Muneeb Butt

They got married when they were both really young and now they have successful careers, a successful marriage and two beautiful daughters. Muneeb Butt is a big name as a leading man and his dramas are always getting good views and ratings. He was a guest on Nida Yasir’s Shan e Suhoor and opened up about marrying at a very young age.

Muneeb said that he got married to Aiman when he was still working on establishing himself in the industry. The path to success was in the making but he still thought about tying the knot. Muneeb said that in his line of work, you get money and fame and many a times he has seen people go astray in their lives. He did not want that for himself so he decided to settle down and start a family of his own, a decision that proved to be great for him.

Here is what Muneeb had to say about marrying at a young age:

He also spoke about how he had to fight his in-laws a bit when he was marrying Aiman. He said that his proposal was easily accepted but Aiman’s parents wanted to wait as she had not even turned 18. Aiman’s mother was concerned about how she will manage the whole household at such a young age. Muneeb and his family assuaged their fears then.

They told them that this will not be a problem as other members of the family will be supporting her.

Also, I wanted to say that it’s our tradition but I uttered the wrong word ‘Rule’. Everyone thinks on his own, I’m a typical person, I follow the traditions, if you become practical you will start seeing sense in everything”.

Aiman Khan also added, “I was unaware of the whole thing until I heard it and then I said to Muneeb that you uttered the word ‘rule’, Muneeb loves the food I cook, I have help too, Muneeb’s mother also help me and when I don’t want to cook, Muneeb cooks for us, he arranges BBQ as well”

Pakistani male actors are not really given diverse roles and we generally see them in the same tall haircuts with perfectly contoured beards, clad in expensive suits and playing the ultra-macho hero in a story with a damsel in distress waiting for rescue. The actors thus have limited room for performance and limited stories and scripts being offered to them. Muneeb Butt took a chance as he performed Sarang Shabbir, an intersex boy in the limited series Sar e Rah and the challenges he goes through before becoming an Assistant Commissioner in Pakistan.
