West is producing great television. We may not be doing as well but if we compare our TV to our neighbouring country, we are doing quite good in terms of execution. The Pakistan Cinematic Industry has been soaring new heights, and gaining the appreciation of audiences, not just locally, but worldwide as well. Our filmmakers and actors have acquired admiration globally and are continuing to awe viewers with increasingly innovative projects.
Since 2008, Little Art annually celebrates the Lahore International Children’s Film Festival, where youngsters from all age groups, residing in both rural and urban areas, are encouraged to showcase their short films in a healthy competition, promoting the nation’s culture, values and creating awareness of the social conflicts.
Up until recently, there has been little affiliation and help from the government to assist people in the aforementioned industry, and there is a lack of awareness among the country dwellers to recognize the work or pay their respect. For example, two-years-in-a-row Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, was only able to have her documentaries acknowledged famously in Pakistan, once she had obtained the golden statue figure. Featured films are privately sponsored and funded by firms and channels to be advertised and played in cinemas internationally. Rarely films from other countries (with the exception of productions of Bollywood and Hollywood) are played in cinemas of Pakistan.
Therefore, the Government of Pakistan has now taken the initiative one step further, and introduced the addition of the Karachi International Film Festival, which will commence its very first session in the year 2018, from the 1st – 4th of February.
In a recent meeting of the Karachi Film Society, at the Governor’s house, where the attendance also included Sultana Siddiqui, Jameel Baig, Dr. Ishrat Hussain, Shermeen Obaid Chinoy, Ameena Siyid, Sirajuddin, and Khalid Mansoor; Muhammad Zubair was highly enthusiastic about the event saying it would revolutionize the era of film industry and revive it from the depths of the problematic issues that merely prevent it from emerging to its maximum capability.
A two-day seminar was arranged in the Governor House so as to formulate a film policy. It was regarded as a success and is hoped to help favor the industry in the long run.
The festival would be a four-day event, where the citizens of Karachi would be allowed access as being the audience to several movies on numerous topics that surface the globe. Also, the government hopes that holding such an occurrence would not only promote the country’s value internationally but also would act as an outlet to portray its better side to the world and develop its image in a positive way.
Moreover, with the increasing number of students that now uptake the courses of film and media as a prospect of their future careers, it is now vital that the country is able to provide them with a substantial platform where they can learn, showcase and work towards a recognized benchmark that can act as a bridge of communication to entertainment industries abroad. KIFF can play the role of a hub where the gathering of preeminent directors, writers, actors, not necessarily from Pakistan, are able to pass on their experience and knowledge profoundly.
Simultaneously, films being made abroad would also have a bigger stage to present their movies and projects to a huge target audience, familiarizing them as well as us with the potential markets of the entertainment industry.
Occasions like these, are also a way of enhancing the unity and bond between the people where they can finally set aside the various distinctions that exist between cultures, religions and practices so as to reconcile the differences to administer peace and tranquility.
The function would also endorse the distribution of ideas so as to facilitate learning as well.
Accordingly, there have been few significant instances where the legendary and famous participants of the film and cinematic industry have been given their deserved fame and glowing tribute. If this is done so, it would motivate and urge the newcomers and pre-existing members to pave way to success with increasing hard work and determination.
The Film Festival would be staged in collaboration with the many cinemas that house maximum amount of people stationed across the city such as Sea View, Nueplex, etc, where films (short and featured) as well as documentaries would be screened from countries worldwide.
In the light of events that this Festival is administered triumphantly, it would prove to be an enormous breakthrough that would reap Pakistan several benefits both economically as well as socially, and embark an exciting journey for the young filmmakers-to-be; where in the future it would be looked back upon as one of the most memorable and outstanding proposition up taken by the current government and enabled the beginning of a new dawn with broadened horizons and fresh opportunities.
Nida Yasir has been hosting a morning show on ARY for many years now. She has established herself as one of the longest running morning show hosts with Good Morning Pakistan. I am sure you guys will recall a LOT of kid characters in dramas. They make a lot of ’em nowadays. The question is, what are they there for? There are 3 things which they mainly do:
1. Ask idiotic questions: They’ll ask anything (note stupid thing) from their parents and their parents will go “awww…” when we’re banging our heads on the wall and wondering, “Yeh makhlooq kya hai?” Even the kindergartners are so smart nowadays. They give answers smartly. In fact they have a “busy” life with their school and friends. They have their own interests.
I love Hareem and Ashar and this scene was cute as well. But what went wrong is that firstly, Hareem asked the question twice (at the hospital and then at her house). Secondly Hareem was of enough age to understand that she had a father and when you meet your long lost father for the first time, you’ll go hug him and just say “Papa!”. Simple as that!
2. Get their parents back together: Parents are so busy with their marital and extra-marital affairs that they don’t have enough time for their kids. I never understand those parents because they never act their age and instead act like kids_ always arguing and quarreling. The point is, since the parents behave like kids all the time, it’s the kids’ job to mend the relationship.
3. Have no life: Roomi of Shukk was cute and adorable and at the same time, farigh. He was always at school and when at home he was always talking about Ehtesham uncle! Didn’t Ehtesham’s house have a TV or a computer for the poor kid?
These are the things that kids nowadays (in our dramas) are interested in. Dramas for kids have long been forgotten. Let’s remember the super-hit ones:
Kidnpped son reunited with his parents after 30 years in Saleem Safi’s show. A miraculous story came out in the news when a child who was kidnapped in 1992 was finally reunited with his parents. The news happened when a man named Muhammad Asif was kidnapped from Bari Imam at the age of 2 years old. He was visiting Bari Imam with his mother and maternal family as a child and he was kidnapped by a woman from there.
The mother revealed that she actually named her son Muhammad Siddique but the kidnappers renamed him to Muhammad Asif. He was mistreated and he was living there with a “brother” who was another kidnapped child. At the age of 10, he fled the house of his kidnappers due to mistreatment and reached Bhalwal. He was taken in by a former advocate and his family. They took care of him, provided him with education and helped him stand up on his own.
Wali Ullah Maroof is the Imam of a masjid in Karachi and he runs a network of like-minded people who try to reunite people who were separated. Asif reached out to him about his case. They started searching and finally matched him with this family. They went for a DNA test and results showed they were indeed father and son. Through Wali Ullah Maroof’s efforts, this family is finally together.

Indian film Kick has kicked out the previous records of biggest openings on Pakistani cinemas with the first day collection of Rs 20.08 million (more than 2 crores). Previously the biggest opening record was of film Waar in 2013 with Rs 11.8 million (1. crore 80 lakhs), but later surpassed by another Indian film Dhoom3(2013) with Rs 11.9 millions (1 crore 90 lakhs).
Dhoom3 also earned a total revenue of Rs. 240 million (24 crore), leaving behind Waar which earned Rs. 230 million (23 crore) at box office. Actress Khushboo who is has been acting in theater for a long time was injured along with eight other people when the van that they were traveling in hit a truck in Sahiwal. The brother of the actress was sadly killed in the accident. This happened when the actress along with the other people was coming back to Lahore from her tour.

Despite the evident strain, she chooses to ‘overlook’ Ahmed Zaryab’s toxic behavior and personality and even continues loving him. She sees the ‘differences’ between them as a compatibility issue more than anything else. Even when her mother highlights Ahmed’s toxic behavior, Adeela opts for silence. There are certainly moments when her patience becomes challenging to comprehend. Adeela epitomizes the women who, in the pursuit of sustaining a marriage, uphold an unwavering commitment, often at the cost of their mental well-being. Nadia Jamil portrays this character with exquisite finesse, shedding light on Adeela’s underlying heartbreak, her annoyance as well as her enduring love for her family.

Alee Hassan Shah’s portrayal of Parvez in the drama is just as interesting as that of Husna. As Husna’s cousin who is smitten by her, his character is uniquely written and stands out from other such supporting characters in usual dramas. Parvez’s affection for Husna adds an amusing and endearing touch, contributing to the overall charm of this track. Similarly, there is an inherent charm and cuteness to Parvez’s character, mirroring the likable qualities found in Husna. Penny played by Sidra Niazi is a married woman and the only female poet in the drama who is unhappy with her married life and romantically involved with Ahmed Zaryab. This character also has an appeal just like the other supporting characters. The writer and the director have ensured that none of Penny’s antics go unnoticed. Shehryar (Saleem Mairaj) and Afaqi’s (Rashid Farooqi) scenes with her and their conversations with each other have been effectively used by the writer to give the viewers all the information they need about Penny’s mindset and her present circumstances. These two supporting characters help build up the right atmosphere and also help the viewers understand different facets of the personalities of others around them. Saleem Mairaj and Rashid Farooqi, both remarkable actors, display an incredible on-screen chemistry that brings their scenes to life. As the closest male friends to Ahmed Zaryab, they possess an in-depth understanding of his character. While not necessarily holding Zaryab in high regard, they exhibit a sense of loyalty, often functioning as enablers.
Wania Nadeem plays the role of Jahan Ara, who is Husna’s friend and class fellow. Jahan Ara’s story is different from that of Husna since her mother is the main reason why she ended up taking Urdu as a major and she has the pressure to make her mother’s dreams come true. Her personality is rather plain when compared to Husna but I have a feeling that we will be seeing a lot of character development as the story progresses. Miss Tabinda is another interesting supporting character in the drama who made her presence felt right from the beginning as the Urdu teacher who knows her students inside out. I find this character intriguing since her constant reminders to Husna about Ahmed Zaryab suggest that she might have had a similar experience with him. Also, it was rather interesting the way she looked at him with reverence when he came to the University.
Faiza Gillani is another exceptional actress who plays the role of Husna’s phupo. This is another strong character in the drama that keeps my interest alive. Moreover, the unexpected twist in the plot, where Husna’s father (Shahnawaz Zaidi) surprises the audience by lying for her and supporting her aspirations, adds a layer of complexity and unpredictability to the narrative, further enhancing the overall interest and appeal of the drama. Husna’s stepmother (Nazlin Mirza) has been shown as an excessively overprotective parent who is constantly scared of going wrong. Even though she does not completely trust Husna, the relationship that these two share is not toxic in a stereotypical manner.

Khumariyaan is an instrumental band from Peshawar and their tones are reflective of their rich cultural music.
The band recorded their debut album and even toured the US and are now all set to participate in Southbank’s Centre’s Alchemy Festival in UK.
“We are going as an instrumental Pakhtun folk rock band as well as cultural ambassadors to present our music at the amazing cultural clash in London,” Khumariyaan told The Express Tribune in an email interview.
The band consists of Sparlay Rawail on lead guitars, Aamir Shafique on rhythm guitars, Farhan Bogra on Rabab and Shiraz Hassan on percussions has a large audience abroad.
“Our sound cloud page has over 10000 followers and every week there are about 100000 plays of our tracks, of all these, more than half are from international audiences including the UK, US and Europe,” said Khumariyaan.
“We enjoy being considered an indigenous act as well as a world music band. The ultimate aim is to keep our sound true to our style and be categorised in both, the world music genre as well as a band that performs ethnic music.”
