Bachaana (بچانا) steady business at box office

Bachaana (بچانا) is the second major Pakistani film released this year after Ho Mann Jahan (ہو من جہاں) released on 1st January 2016. Released on 26th February 2016, Bachaana has earned decent figure of 3.34 crore on the box office in its opening week . In first week of its release there was a major dip in the cinema business for two major reason. Firstly Cricket Asia Cup is in progress and secondly the law and order situation was tense through out the week due to hanging of Mumtaz Qadri the murderer of the former Governor of the Punjab Salman Taseer.

Now after completing three weeks in cinemas the film has performed steadily and has earned a total of 8.05 crore. It is considered a a very healthy figure for this medium budgeted film.

In the first two months of 2016, as usual many Bollywood films have also been released like Fitoor, Sanam Re, Wazir, Love Shuda all of which have performed below expectations after satisfactory opening weekends all these films faded away on weekdays. The only successful film of 2016 so far is Ho Mann Jahan which has earned nearly 15.50 crore in Pakistan and 5 crore in other countries (US, UK, UAE) thus earning around 20.50 crores.

The other hit film of 2016 is Bollywood’s Kapoor & Sons released on 25th March 2016 is also expected to earn well after its splendid weekend.

Kapoor & Sons, excellent weekend on Pakistani Box office

Bollywood films are extremely popular in Pakistan and time and again this trend is further strengthened by the cine goers who enthusiastically wait for and watch such films. Just three months ago a Bollywood film Dilwale released in December 2015 earned around 20.50 crore on Pakistani box office.

Another Bollywood film Kapoor & Sons released on 25th March 2016 is also having a huge opening. The highlight of Kapoor & Sons is Pakistani superstar Fawad Khan who also worked in the film. As per press reports Fawad Khan has played an important role in the film. His character is a bit unusual too as he is playing the role of a gay. The film is also praised in Pakistani English press, like Dawn News ‘s Hamna Zubair has appreciated it and termed it as a game changer for gay men in India.

The subject and the role of Fawad Khan might be unusual but as usual like a routine Bollywood film, Kapoor & Sons also enjoyed a huge opening. Nearly every Bollywood film released in 2016 has earned more than 1 crore on its opening weekend but Kapoor & Sons has earned 3.50 crore which is the second best opening weekend figures of 2016.

The highest opening weekend of 2016 lies with the local Urdu film Ho Mann Jahan which earned nearly 4 crore on its opening weekend.

Kapoor & Sons might have surpassed the record of Ho Mann Jahan, but it suffered on Saturday due to India/Pakistan T20 cricket match. Also constant rains in Islamabad have impacted the business as well as Islamabad the national capital of Pakistan is also a huge market for Bollywood films.

Here is the day wise break down of Kapoor & Sons

Friday.. 1.3cr
Saturday.. 90lacs
Sunday (Estimates).. 1.25cr

Total.. 3.45cr

Seeing this trend the film could be the highest earning film of Fawad Khan in Pakistan. His highest earning film so far is Bollywood’s Khoobsurat (2014) which earned around 8.50 crore.

Mann Mayal – Episode 9

Tonight’s episode had its high and low moments. Some of the scenes between Ifty’s father and Salahuddin were very heart warming. Salahuddin decided to stay back even after everything that happened because he could not leave a helpless old man with people who did not care about him. Kuki only allowed Salahuddin to stay in the house on her own terms and conditions. She was obviously very sure that Salahuddin won’t be able to fulfill the duties assigned to him but Salahuddin’s commitment and love towards Ifty’s father was something Kuki could not relate to!

Ifty’s father and Salahuddin had some heart to heart conversations and some light moments in this episode. Salahuddin could not help but share some of his feelings with Ifty’s father after he talked to Bia on the phone. For the first time the viewers saw Salahuddin regretting his decision. Honestly speaking I had a very difficult time relating to the way Salahuddin felt after talking to Bia. Somehow Salahuddin’s character is not very convincing when he is being weak and vulnerable, he is definitely more believable as the practical yet caring man. Hamza Ali Abbasi also fits into the practical and caring role better than a man who cannot get over the love of his life. I must say that Hamza Ali Abbasi’s laughter once again seemed really fake in tonight’s episode. Talat Hussain on the other hand was absolutely brilliant in every scene. (xanax) I loved watching these two people who needed each other for completely different reasons bonding with each other. The conversation that revolved around money might actually lead Ifty’s father to give whatever he has right now to Salahuddin although for now we have been given the impression that he does not have much in his name but Ifty’s dialogue about Abba’s jaidad suggested something entirely different.

mm

This episode yet again showed that Mikael is not just a gambler and drunkard but he is also a liar!! Mikael took money for two plane tickets from his mother but bought only one. Later on too in the scene where he fights with his friends, the viewers got to see how desperate he is for money. Mannu shared some emotional moments with her father and was mostly seen lying to her family in order to convince them that she had a happy life. Mannu’s father gave her the option of coming back anytime she felt she could not live with Mikael any more but Mannu made it clear that she was not going to consider that as an option. Through these scenes the viewers were shown how much Mannu had changed, something which Mannu’s father noticed as well. Mannu probably knew that Bia will tell Salahuddin everything that is why she even said that she wouldn’t have been happier with anyone else. Mannu’s conversations with all her family members and the one with her father and Bia in particular would have carried more weight if they were shorter. Salahuddin’s reaction to whatever Bia told him went to show that he was still in love with Mannu.

mm1

Talat Hussain was the star of the show in tonight’s episode. Maya Ali has been brilliant right from the start and even tonight she brought out the best in her character. There were however some scenes that seemed too long. The preview of the next episode showed Salahuddin sharing his story with Ifty’s father and their relationship getting even stronger. It remains to be seen whether Ifty’s father will be in the picture for long or not. Overall, this episode was much better than the last one but it also had quite a few scenes which could easily be skipped. Right now Salahuddin’s track is keeping my interest alive in the show because Mannu’s life is not likely to be changed in any way anytime soon. Mikael’s character is too flawed for my taste.

“I am Deeply Hurt” – Shafqat Amanat Ali

0

The T20 match between Pakistan and India was a disappointment for people in more ways than one. Not only did the Pakistani team lose the match but Shafqat Amanat Ali who was given the huge responsibility of singing the national anthem on this occasion was criticized heavily by the public for forgetting some words of the national anthem.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXfFK9yTrdA

Apart from the general public some of the celebrities also criticized him openly for disappointing people in this way and for not carrying out the job assigned to him properly. The glitches in the national anthem were discussed more than the match itself because singing the national anthem seemed like a much easier task than winning the match. Shafqat Amanat Ali decided to apologize although he felt that this apology was not needed since he did not forget the national anthem but the confusion was due to technical glitches. Here is what he had to say to everyone who wants to hear his side of the story.

People also said that an actor Amitabh Bachan sang his national anthem better than the singer Shafqat Amanat Ali. Goher Mumtaz also criticized Shafqat Amanat Ali in this way:

Madiha Rizvi expressed her feelings in this way:

Tere Mere Beech – Episode 17!

Ohkay so, this was another filler episode of Tere Mere Beech. I guess 16-18 episodes were enough for this drama & to see them reaching the 17 episodes with so many fillers in between is no fun but I am sure the team has to touch the 20 episode mark & what for, the selfish reasons are best known to them. The story has nothing left to offer now because all we see is a shattered girl who is dealing with so many psychological pressures but there is no solution or way out that’s being shown & I seriously think they should wrap this drama up because it is now getting impossible for me to keep my interest alive in this show!!!

All this while, I thought Zahida’s character was useless but she proved me wrong today. She, her scenes & her caterwauling came in quite handy because it reduced the show time of the episode for me & I succeeded in covering the 40 minute episode in just about 20 minutes because I wasn’t interested in her mourning & nor was I looking forward to getting my ear drums damaged because of her screams, so yeah, she wasn’t so useless after all. I must say I hate this trio of Zahida, Nadia & Sadia to the core, not because they are useless but because they are so involved in the self-righteousness that they really know how to make it all about themselves. When Hareem was with them, all they did was treat her like a stranger & someone who was a reason behind all their problems but now when Hareem vanished, Sadia & Nadia realized that she was their ‘sister’ because of which they were crying buckets for her. Sadia all of a sudden felt that she should’ve stayed back with Hareem whereas she couldn’t wait to go to Nadia’s place to get rid of her. Then comes Zahida, who pretty much followed the footsteps of Nighat because when Hareem was with her, she couldn’t stand her & held her responsible for all the mishaps, she pampered Sadia more & now when she was separated from her, she remembered how much she loved her? These three ladies don’t really make much sense & honestly speaking, I was happy that Hareem was out of their lives but I am sooo disappointed to see that Hareem will be reunited with them in the next episode probably!

The only good thing about this entire drama is the character of Hareem & the transition she is going through. I can’t help feel for her so much because she has lead such a disturbed life & now when she was crying in regret & was hurt because she was blaming herself for Nighat’s death, I couldn’t help but curse Nighat even more because she failed as a mother when she lived & has only become a dark memory even after she has died too. Look what Nighat has done to this poor girl where she only gave birth to Hareem to use her as a punching bag & as someone who had to take all the responsibility for Nighat’s bad & selfish parenting. Nighat never really made any effort to do Hareem’s upbringing & every single time she only taunted, cursed & abused Hareem mentally. I feel for Hareem so much because now when her mother had died due to her own burdened soul, she thinks she is responsible for her death, which is so unfair & so overbearing for such a young girl!

I liked how Hareem took her time in trusting Shela completely. She kept on fabricating one lie after another but she really had to give in & the credit goes to Shela for being so patient & understanding towards Hareem. Isn’t it amazing that a complete stranger sensed that something was definitely wrong & Hareem was overburdened but her own family members never really gave a thought about it & used her as a punching bag. I really think Shela shouldn’t let Hareem leave so early because she has just started working on her & I am sure if Hareem will live with her, she will become a better person & she will become emotionally & mentally stronger too.

The preview of the next episode didn’t really entice me. I am not looking forward to this forced reunion which wouldn’t do any good to Hareem. At least Shela & Nasreen’s presence in Hareem’s life & their guidance was much needed & was a perfect breather but I’d be disappointed if Hareem goes back to that psycho-ward so soon. Looks like Fahad is going to come back too & I hope now Hareem relies more on Shela to bring peace & harmony in her marital life. I am sure Shela will guide her properly! Please share your thoughts about this episode of Tere Mere Beech.

Aabro – Episode 14!

Haye tauba! Itna emotional episode. :/ I controlled a lot but the last scene where Afsheen slept without drinking milk & Ali & Aabro fed each other did the trick & it got too overwhelming for me that I cried! :/ I seriously now feel for Aabro & Ali because I think they really have apologized enough, they have suffered enough & they have redeemed themselves by accepting everything that their family members threw at them because they both were genuinely apologetic & wanted to make things right.

I now think the time has come when Zubaida should experience something totally miserable in her life to understand how unfair she has been. Yes, she is mad at Ali & Aabro & yes, she had the right to let them know but to ignore an infant & treat her as if she doesn’t exist is totally wrong. I really think they have taken it a bit too far because both Zafar & Zubaida are shown as moderately religious people who had certain limitations that they always believed in, so I feel really disgusted to see them turning a blind eye towards Afsheen to this extent where they don’t even have an idea that she cries because of hunger pangs!!! I somehow don’t really like the continuous reminders of how Zafar & Zubaida are ‘namazi’ because in a very negative light it makes us question the fact that how come religious people like them can be so cruel & inhumane that they can’t bring themselves to forgive their own child? Yes, they can always draw a line & keep him at a distance but to deliberately torture & taunt Ali & his wife doesn’t really go in harmony with the fact that Zubaida & Zafar are God-fearing people? I don’t know why but I have always observed this trend in our dramas where they make sure to show those characters in a negative light who have something to do with the religion & even in Aabro, I feel the ‘focus’ on namaz is unnecessary because the namazis themselves are acting like hooligans!!!

I seriously lol’ed in disgust when I saw Fauzia thoosofying fruits in her mouth while sitting on a ‘bed’. I think the award for the most laziest character ever in the history of Pakistani drama goes to Fauzia. Like ye bed pe bethne ke liye paida hui hai? Or else, sirf aur sirf ‘bethne’ ke liye paida hui hai? She was seen sitting on her bed ample of times, then she was seen sitting on a sofa, then on a chair while dinning & then at the backseat of Abid’s car. I seriously think she should get her spine checked. Anyways, I really thought that after all this while, she will start feeling a thing or two for Aabro but to see her agreeing to her mother’s negative thoughts was distasteful. Fauzia can see to which extent Aabro gets ill-treated by both Zubaida & Tayyaba (naam to dekho harkaton se totally opposite wala) yet she thinks Aabro deserves this? I expected that may be after a little while Fauzia will also grow a little sympathetic towards Aabro but nope, she chooses to stay comfy in the vicinity of her bed & does not think about displaying a little bit of humanity when needed!!!

Aabro doesn’t only work throughout the day for herself & her family but she is taking care of all the household chores allotted by Ali’s family to her too. Aabro thinks this could serve as her redemption & she will be forgiven but no, she really has thought too high of Ali’s parents to be expecting forgiveness from them because they both are unreasonable, inhumane & dheet. They as parents have seen their son suffering enough but they have grown a thick skin where nothing that Ali & Aabro would do will change the way they feel for them, which is disgusting.

I felt sad seeing Sakina being insulted so badly. Zubaida doesn’t really treat Aabro as her family member so she shouldn’t have concerned herself with the guest who came to meet Aabro. The way Zafar encouraged Zubaida & patted on her back for insulting Sakina was disgusting too. Yes, I have used the word ‘disgusting’ enough already but I can’t explain how disgusted I feel after this episode. Sakina really is doing so much to provide some sort of support to her daughter but now Ali’s mother wouldn’t even allow that. It was quite amusing that she had kept quite an eye on the things Aabro & Ali had while completely ignoring the fact that it was Sakina who helped them & it wasn’t Ali who arranged the stuff for Aabro. It was so funny that 4 months passed but neither did Zafar’s shalwar kameez change, nor did Fauzia’s orange suit, Zubaida’s white suit & Tayyaba’s tortoise suit change too. Also, I really thought that Tayyaba’s character will be subtracted but looks like she still has some eye-brow raises & taunts left to offer.

I really think both Aabro & Ali have redeemed themselves by accepting their fate & also accepting the fact that they hurt their parents & that is why things are being hard on them. It is good to see them growing conscious of their past mistakes & trying to rectify the situation but I still feel they have done enough & it’s time for them to have some relief. I also felt a lot for Aabro when she saw how Fauzia was being treated like a royalty. It was good that Aabro wasn’t jealous or anything but she only compared her condition with Fauzia’s & felt sad that she didn’t get the attention that Fauzia was getting, which was something natural. I really really like how Ali & Aabro are both sticking together in these tough circumstances. Aabro understands what Ali is going through & so does Ali understand what Aabro has to put up with all day long. I really think this aspect of the drama is really nice that both Ali & Aabro are sticking with their decision & are growing more & more considerate towards each other as their patience is being tested. Somehow, they both are a perfect match because no one else would’ve lasted the pressure the way they both did by supporting each other. I am glad that even though this drama is just a guilty pleasure & not the sort that will leave an impact but they have showed something that we never get to see in our dramas & that is that a couple is not thinking about escaping from the tough circumstances but are staying by each other’s side & fighting whatever comes their way in a hope that they will find a way out of this havoc. This is exactly the sort of solutions we need to see in our dramas where dusri shadi or extra marital affairs is not on the characters’ mind & they are just trying to fight their own battles like a team. That’s the only good thing about this drama!

The preview didn’t suggest that things will get better for Ali & Aabro but I really hope that Ali gets a decent job, at least decent enough to afford a flat for his family so they move out from this hell-hole ASAP. I must say Farah Shah has nailed Zubaida’s character, I love her expressions & the way she acts. I had a good laugh when she goes like ‘tumse to mujhe yehi umeed thi Abid, then roles her eyes & sarcastically asks Ali, aur tum kya do ge?’. LOL! She really is a phenomenal actor & I think it’s only because of her acting that Zubaida’s character can be tolerated on-screen. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Aabro!

Kisay Chahoon – Episodes 13 & 14

Right. So as if Mehru zeroing in on Ameer was not enough, now her father has chimed in too. I did not like how Mehru used Ameer as a pawn in her game against her father. I know we are beginning to get a bit annoyed by Ameer’s bechargi but that is how he is and obviously it seems he is going to snap out of it at some point but it did not happen in these two episodes.

I was willing to give Jabbar (Mehru’s father) the benefit of the doubt, thinking although the measures he took seemed a bit extreme and harsh, yet he had Mehru’s best interests at heart. His anger upon hearing Mehru has started to work was uncalled for. Even if I were to let that pass thinking he was upset because it was something that was not the norm in their family I could not excuse how he behaved with Maryam. Insisting that she leave her studies and get married otherwise move out was very unreasonable. Now whether he truly believes that is the best for her or he was doing another ‘Mehru’ on her I am not sure but Maryam called his bluff and packed her suitcase and moved into Mehru’s house. Can I just say here that I do not get how quickly women do their packing in dramas? There is always an empty suitcase available and everything packed, suitcase zipped within minutes whereas whenever we travel I have to hunt and empty out suitcases, then prepare lists upon lists with the mother of all lists pinned to the front door so I do not miss out anything!!! Ugggh!
Anyways, Ameer takes the verbal bashing Jabbar gives him and does not utter a word to Mehru. Although I did not like how Mehru used him to get back at her father and how she quizzed him but later when Maryam tells her exactly what their father said, her surprise made me believe that she did not mean for Ameer to be called all the names her father called him, rather she just wanted to hear how riled he was upon her news.
PIC 1
Her job turned out to be a nightmare. I am no perfect judge of character but that boss of hers really did seem sleazy daikhnay he say! I will just call him her boss and not bother looking up his name as I do not think he makes an appearance again. For all his 6 foot-ness, I found it hilarious that one dhakka from Mehru was all it took for him to fall to the floor and later he also got quite a beating from an outraged Ameer! I love how Ameer suddenly flares up when anyone says or does anything to Mehru like those guys in the street in the previous episode and now her boss.
My heart went out to Ameer when he tells Maryam that Mehru mujhay pasand nahin karti because he is not as smart as the shehr guys. Okay, even in my adoration of Ameer I will admit he is not dashing but oh.my.God – Hamza?! I could not believe my ears when Maryam said that. I wanted to plop down at their table and say nahin nahin, Hamza jaisa bilkul nahin!! But then, that ‘smartness’ is what Mehru was apparently in love with wasn’t she? Go figure.
Ah. Hamza. Rather Hamza ka pait and his appetite. Shakra in all her blustering announced that she would make all his favorite dishes within an hour and I am sorry to digress here but my mind started to drift – what can you make within an hour that would be classified as a delicious favorite dish. I doubt Hamza was a mac n cheese addict. But Mareena’s cooking scene did not need me to ponder over that for long. That chicken which was marinated with only dahi, zeera powder, ginger and garlic looked very unappetizing but hey, it would cook under an hour in the oven! Waisay for someone who looks hunted and keeps making it a point that each minute of his time is accounted for, I found it quite silly of Hamza to have left his phone in another room while Mareena was calling him at his mother’s house.
I will not comment on Mareena and Hamza’s scenes. Same old, same old. Except it appears they are bringing a poor baby into their mad mix. All that hue and cry over the baby announcement made me think of only one thing – birth control maybe and Mareena could have spared everyone the drama? Hamza seems to be concentrating on ‘reforming’ and daddying Mareena yet – will he be able to manage two children? Hmm.

PIC 2

It seemed like Mehru was beginning to melt when she smiles when Ameer beats up her boss. I am so glad we were spared any nastiness actually happening in her office for it would have truly spoilt the drama for me.

While Mareena and Hamza’s track seems to continue on its chaotic tone, I wonder if Maryam moving in to Mehru’s house will help Mehru discover any feelings she may have for Ameer? I have to say I am quite impressed by how natural Pari Hashmi’s acting is. Sonia and Ali Abbas were amazing as always except when her boss locks the room door I expected Sonia to do her asthma type acting but the expression on her face seemed a bit uncharacteristic pf her to me. Also, is it me (and I am no maulvi, really!) but don’t Noor Hasan and Iqra’s scenes seem a bit too close for comfort? I just find the scenes where they are sitting and talking and the focus is on their faces a bit awkward. The promo for next week suggests that Mareena takes measures to be rid of her baby whereas nothing seems to be changing on the Mehru-Ameer front. I do not expect Mehru to fall into Ameer’s arms next week but it would be nice to see a few more scenes showing how her feelings are changing for him rather than the same old attitude she has towards him.

Oh and what was with the weird ‘ha ha ha ha’ and ‘hay hay hay’ music that played when Hamza’s mother asks him if he is happy and when Ameer gets told off? The sort of music that plays in those bad shaadi videos when they show scores of close ups of the bride from different angles? Has it been played in the earlier episodes? I only just noticed it in the 13th episode. Strange. Anyways, what did you all think of these episodes? Would love to hear your thoughts.

I would just like to mention here that this is the last of my weekly reviews on Kisay Chahoon and the other dramas I was reviewing – Judai, Mera Yaar Miladay and Bhai. I am finding it a bit difficult to manage my time writing along with managing home, the kids etc. I really enjoyed writing the reviews though and am truly grateful for all the lovely comments of appreciation I received on them. So, thank you all and take care hainji!

Gul-e-Rana – Episode 19

This drama never had much to offer but now it has turned into a complete snooze-fest! Talk about dragging a story to the limit and showing the same scenes over and over again and then forgetting altogether that these issues ever existed!! Some 5 weeks back Asher’s illness was introduced in the story 2 episodes later it was completely forgotten. Asher looked perfectly healthy and there was absolutely no mention of his disease. Now that Rana has gone to Murree Asher looks very bemar and his illness is being given the “attention” it deserved right from the time it was revealed to the viewers. Although I must say that in this episode Asher seemed more love stricken than anything else since this recent change in his health and attitude came only after Rana left. We saw Asher day dreaming about Rana which was actually quite disgusting since she is married and has never really shown any interest in him. Not to mention the fact that Asher is also getting married really soon and Asher Bhai doesn’t think it is important to tell the girl he is marrying that he has a serious illness. Most of the characters in this drama are living in lala land where not much makes sense.

gr1

This episode was full of awkward moments. Rana and Adeel shared most of these awkward moments in which we saw Rana looking after Adeel like it was her duty. She made sure that there were no emotions involved in this whole caretaking scenario. I liked the way this particular aspect was covered but then we saw these scenes over and over again. Adeel continued to be a spoiled brat, he wanted Rana to pamper him, to insist that he should eat and what not. He seemed like a toddler who was trying very hard to get his mother’s attention. Omer and Rana’s scene was another awkward moment which was quite unnecessary. It really did look like Omer was flirting with Rana, he brought her flowers and the way he talked to her was very flirtatious. Since when does Rana think it is okay to have male friends? Rana refused to take the gift Omer brought for her but she was very candid with him. Adeel was right in pointing out that Rana is so talkative and chirpy when talking to everyone else except him which is something which I totally understand. While I loved the way Rana treated Adeel but her attitude towards Omer (another bhai???) was not in line with her character at all. Omer wasn’t just being nice with her and I won’t be surprised if we see him day dreaming about her very soon too ;)

gr2

So, Rana’s mother just found out that Adeel had a terrible accident!! Rana went to Murree and told her! Wah!! Does Munira really live in that house? No one even told her what had happened? Adeel’s father is a rich man, he can afford to keep a male nurse for his son who will look after him therefore putting Rana in this awkward position seems really forced. There was a scene shown in the preview of this episode last week which was missing from it, something that has been happening very often on HUM. Asher’s love story once again got a lot of screen time in tonight’s episode which makes me wonder why the writer is putting so much emphasis on this track.

The episode ended with Asher’s sister finding out about Asher’s big secret!! While his disease is the last thing on Asher’s mind, the writer is bent on making him a bechara. The script of this dramas lacks depth and even meaning. We watch the same scenes over and over again in every episode as if the writer and the director are trying too hard to get the message across. Asher Bhai’s love for Rana, Rana’s lack of concern for her husband and Adeel’s attention-seeking behaviour is not the least bit appealing! The preview of the next episode suggested that things are not going to move much even in the upcoming episode therefore anyone who didn’t watch this episode can easily skip it and watch the next one (maybe!!)

How many of you watched this latest episode. Do share your thoughts about it.

Hotal (ہوٹل) releasing on 1st April 2016

Hotal (ہوٹل) is an upcoming Hindi/Urdu film which is under production from past two years. Last year it was screened in New Delhi film festival in New Delhi, India where it also bagged an award.

Hotal is now finally releasing on 1st April 2016. It can be considered as a comeback film for filmstar Meera. Her last major appearance was in film Ishq Khuda in 2013, though she also appeared in a cameo in the film Dekh Magar Pyar Se in 2015. Hotal was due to release on 8th April 2016, however now it is releasing a week earlier to avoid the clash with another film Maalik.

Filmstar Meera is always known for the awkward incidents and who knows whether it is another coincidence that Hotal is releasing on 1st April 2016, perhaps its an act of April Fool from Meera.

Here is the trailer of Hotal

Mein Sitara – Episode 1

Writer: Faiza Iftikhar
Director: Seema Taher Khan
Produced By: TVONE
Channel and Timings: TVONE – 8pm – Thursday

This first episode was gripping; it definitely managed to hold my interest and made me look forward to what is in store in the upcoming episodes. Anyone who was waiting to watch this play probably already knows that this drama is set in the 60s and the story revolves around the Pakistani film industry. All the primary characters in the play which are going to be a part of it right till the end were introduced in tonight’s episode. Farhad Sethi (Mikaal Zulfiqar) is a renowned television director who is stepping into the world of films. I must say that in this very brief first episode Farhad’s private life along with his work life was covered flawlessly. Farhad’s love for his wife Jharna (Aisha Gul) was shown in the very first scene but at the same time the gradual shift in his priorities was also covered in a very subtle manner. Jharna feels that her husband is not as excited about their third child as he was about the first two. The obvious reason for this was that Farhad was clearly ‘distracted’ because he is very enthusiastic about his first film. He also mentioned that he did not want another child. Farhad fell in love with Jharna the star and he wants to use her talent even now, he cannot see it going to waste.

Different conversations in this first episode and the portraits/pictures on the walls suggested that even though Jharna Begum is no longer a part of the film industry but she was a super star at one point and she still has a much bigger name in the industry than her husband. Jharna Begum was a multi-talented star who people admired not just because of her talent but also because of her wisdom. The conversations in the party went to show that people were more enthusiastic about the film because Jharna was in some way associated with it and not because of Farhad Sethi. Farhad also relies on the advice of his wife. Farhad might be a big name in television but Jharna is the star when it comes to the world of films. Jharna however has left all the fame behind, she is hopelessly in love with her husband and wants to focus on her family. The way Jharna’s standing in the world of films and her personality in general along with references to her physical strength were conveyed to the audience through different conversations definitely added to the overall impression of the character.

ms1

The characters and story of Surraya’s household was introduced just as seamlessly as that of Jharna and Farhad. Surraya’s character instantly caught my attention. Although every girl this age is impressed by glittery things but Surraya is different because even at this tender age she knows how to manipulate situations to her advantage. Surraya has a mind of her own and she knows exactly what she wants to do to keep herself happy. The second she walked into Jharna’s house she knew that if she pleases the woman of the house she will be able to gain access to television, music and make-up!! In a short span of time Jharna started trusting Surraya so much that she asked her to look after her kids when she was leaving for the hospital and later on too she trusted her with taking care of her and her kids. Surraya in return got exactly what she wanted! Surraya is a little girl with a big personality who definitely won me over. Surraya’s parents especially her father however had a different agenda when he figured  out that he could easily get his hand on some expensive jewelry and flee the scene.

ms3

This first episode was extremely refreshing; it had a completely new feel to it and the direction was absolutely brilliant. Every scene was well-conceived, to the point and most importantly highly creative. None of the scenes had a been-there-seen-that feel to it which was definitely something I had been waiting to see in a drama. The makeovers were spot on and the acting by all the actors including the children involved was top notch. Aisha Gul was truly impressive in this first episode, she managed to bring out all the shades of Jharna’s personality – the person she was when she was alone and the star she is when she is among people – beautifully on screen. Her acting was effortless and she definitely made her presence felt. Watching Mikaal Zulfiqar in a different get up was also another plus and at least in this episode his dialogue delivery gave me nothing to complain about. The child star playing Surraya deserves special mention here because her confidence and acting both blew me away!! I think Faiza Iftikhar is finally going to give us a story we have all been waiting for – something new and entertaining. Loved the kind of Urdu that was used in this episode. I really like the OST as well because it is completely in line with the main subject of this play. The director successfully managed to transport me to another world through this episode and I really did not want this episode to end. It is very rarely that you instantly connect with all the characters in the very first episode but for me this episode managed to do just that. I also loved the way the credits rolled in the end, everyone from the director to the sweeper was mentioned in them.

The preview of the next episode showed that Surraya’s parents will leave her behind because they wouldn’t have been able to flee with the jewelry if they took her with them. Although Farhad thinks Surraya is involved too but Jharna will protect her. This is how Surraya will start living a new life, away from her family but with Jhankar Begum and very close to the world of glitz and glam!

How many of you watched this first episode? Did you like it as much as I did? If you missed it I highly recommend that you watch it on http://www.dramasonline.com

Celebrities Support Shahid Afridi

0

Shahid Afridi’s statements few days back that he gets more love from Indian crowds than he does from the Pakistani crowds was not taken well by some people. There were people and also journalists from both sides who wanted to know how different celebrities thought about Shahid Afridi’s statement since Pakistani fans love Shahid Afridi and such a statement can cause resentment.

The fact that Shahid Afridi is well loved in Pakistan and Pakistani celebrities support him was reinforced when none of the celebrities or even the media highlighted the issue in the wrong way. Meera recently said that she supported Shahid Afridi and it was something which he said but didn’t mean.

meera

Fawad Khan also supported Shahid Afridi by saying,

“What happened with Afridi, I think it happens everywhere and anywhere — someone comes and creates an issue over nothing. What Afridi said was in some other context but something else was made out of it. “I feel he gave the statement to ease the air. It was a momentary thing and someone tried to take advantage of that and blew it out of proportion.”

fawad

Fawad Khan also said,

“It doesn’t mean that anyone can question his patriotism. He is a very proud Pakistani. And we are proud to have him as a representative of our country.”

When a fan asked Fahad Mustafa during an online chat what he thought about Shahid Afridi’s statement, he replied that Shahid Afridi was a patriotic man. He also said,

“Ghalti sub se ho jati hai.”

Judai – Episode 5

Right. So the cat is out of the bag, except this cat brought two kittens along with it too! As we all suspected, Saima was also Hassan’s wife. This episode was about Mehr slowly returning to life after Hassan’s death and then like a treasure hunt, stumbling upon clue after clue which finally landed her at Saima’s doorstep. Ouch!

The episode begins with Alia and Haider (and the annoying crickets that seem to accompany Haider everywhere!) chatting in their bedroom. Alia really wants to go on a honeymoon and feels Haider has immersed himself too deep into the office affairs and should take a break. It was nice to see Haider concerned about his mother for in the earlier episodes I was given the impression that he was quite short with Mehr. In the scene where Alia tells Minahil off in front of Mehr, I did think Minahil was a bit out of order by saying it is too soon for Alia and Haider to go anywhere as she is not really a part of their family. But then Alia is also all about making changes in her susraal and her life the way she deems fit and is not willing to accept any changes to accommodate them.

PIC1

I liked the scene between Haider and Mehr in the garden. It was nice to see Mehr as the level headed woman she is and not create a saas bahu issue out of Alia wanting to go on a honeymoon. I mentioned earlier as well that I feel bad for Mehr since it seems the only two ‘friends’ she has are Saman and Alia’s mum (if you don’t count Minahil). Whether I feel Alia and Haider should have left for their honeymoon now or not is a separate issue but I really did not care for how Saman was going on about it to Mehr. I really do not like Saman’s character – there is nothing positive about her!

So I know Alia said Mehr needed to keep herself busy and have a hobby but I am pretty sure super sleuthing is not what she had in mind! When Mehr eyes the letters addressed to Hasan it was obvious that she was about to open Pandora’s box. The expressions of curiosity, confusion, distress were all portrayed by Samina Peerzada so well! I loved how there was no wailing, no collapsing and oh my God no throwing things around. I don’t know why but that always bothers me- the throwing and breaking of things in dramas and movies. I keep thinking, ab itna tor phor kar kay khud he saaf karna ho ga but here I had to remind myself keh I am sure maasi hai! However, back to Samina Peerzada, I loved how she portrayed a dignified woman who knew her world was collapsing around her and the confusion on her face when she went to Junaid’s house and spoke to Saman showed how she was barely just holding on to her composure.

PIC2

I found it odd how she zeroed in on the files in Junaid’s house and knew to go through them unless she had bionic eyes and saw ‘Hassan’ from afar. But I suppose in her quest to know more and since it was paper that was doing all the talking (Hasan and Junaid surely hadn’t!) maybe she thought she would find some clue. Apparently she did as she ends up at Saima’s doorstep. I have to admit I was waiting for that scene and I was not disappointed. I know Saima is all filmy and I have never watched any of her films but I watched her in Kaneez and Rang Laaga and although a bit dramatic I do think she is a good actress. Having said that, I understand she is portraying a woman here who is not quite herself but the messy hair was a bit distracting especially as I was trying to find Saima’s face behind all the strands hanging in front of it! And Samina Peerzada is easily one of my favourite actresses. From being a woman struggling to come back to life, to a woman making a shocking discovery and then to the indignant woman who confronts Saima – she was flawless.

PIC3

I never thought I would say this but I actually liked Faryal Mehmood today. I find her acting very annoying in the other dramas I have seen her in and even earlier in Judai when she was smiling dreamingly at Hamza but today I liked how she actually seemed ‘normal’! I also liked the chemistry between her and Samina Peerzada, something I did not think I would notice. Hamza and Zaina were absent from today’s episode – probably a big exam coming up for which Zaina was tutoring Hamza (tongue in cheek). I can not say I missed them and am actually glad that they were not thrown in just for the sake of it as today was all about Mehr’s final discovery of Saima for I would have also lost my mind if the episode had ended without telling us how exactly Saima is related to Hasan!

I can not believe how Junaid had left Hasan’s private file so easily on the table knowing what a super nosy woman his wife is. Actually, I noticed that everyone in today’s episode was super attentive and sleuth-ish. Haider with his ‘did Alia say something to you’ line to his mother when she mentioned the honeymoon and then when he asked Alia if something had happened between her and Minahil. Mehr’s super sleuthing where she discovers a box on top of the wardrobe of their bedroom which she had surprisingly never come across in all those years of marriage, how she zeroes in on the file on Junaid’s table and ends up in Lahore! I felt like I was being left behind in this group of sleuths and needed to hone up my detective skills too and not miss anything and almost jumped up and exclaimed ‘I knew it!’ even before Saima finished uttering her ‘woh meray shohar hain’. There!

Jokes aside, I quite liked today’s episode. I know they dragged out the whole Hasan secret in the earlier ones and I would have preferred to find out aaj he how Saima became his wife but watching Mehr make the discovery – I was not bored. Next week’s preview showed Saima sharing her story with Mehr. How did you find today’s episode? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Mana Ka Gharana – Episode 14!

Ohkay so, probably after a long time I liked this episode of Mana Ka Gharana because seems like the story of Maalik & Zarri is going to progress in the episodes to come & that’s the only thing that I look forward to in this entire drama.

As expected, Saleha now wants Maalik to reconcile his differences with Gul Bahar & start afresh. It is actually quite amusing that Saleha is doing everything she can that in her opinion, will guarantee Mana’s happiness. Saleha is leaving no stone unturned to do even achieve the unachievable, like bringing Maalik & Gul Bahar together so that no one from her side of the family stays in bad books of Shehryaar. Everything that Saleha on her own is doing for Mana is understandable because parents do these things for their children but the way Saleha is now expecting everyone else around her to make sacrifices for Mana is a bit hard to digest. Saleha herself has seen how hard things were on Maalik & how he isolated himself so it is actually quite selfish of her to ignore this entire episode of Maalik’s life & expect him to get back with Gul Bahar just to make her happy so that she doesn’t make things awkward for Mana. I wish for once Saleha will analyze the situation & understand that a relation that requires so much of effort & so much of sacrifices from a girl’s side is definitely not worth it.

After Ghaalib gave Saleha a shut up call twice, I really thought he redeemed himself but nope, this uncle is hopeless because ohkay, his wife Saleha can show some level of inconsideration towards Maalik but to hear Ghaalib convey the message of his wife Saleha to his brother like a minion was ridiculous. I really think as much as Saleha, Ghaalib is also responsible for what his family is going through because just like his wife, his brains have stopped working too & that is why he is saying such things which he definitely shouldn’t. Saleha must’ve lost all her senses, sensibility & sanity because of Mana & Shehryaar’s marriage but Ghaalib is not unaware of what his younger brother went through because of Gul Bahar, so he should be the last person telling his brother to give this marriage another chance. It was good to know that Maalik openly told Ghaalib how he thinks Gul Bahar has an ulterior motive, to which Ghaalib’s response was shocking as usual. He can already sense & foresee that things can go wrong but he is choosing to stay quiet till something actually happens, because guess what, even in that state he knows what he’ll be doing, yes you all guessed it right, hiding in his room probably under his blanket & crying buckets over his daughter’s phooti kismat!!!

I must say Gul Bahar has the bones & body of steel because even after hearing so many negative things about herself from her potential ex-husband, she still thinks she has a chance in his life & is doing everything to make things difficult for him & punish him. I really like the admiration Maalik has for Zarri & how he finds her respectable enough to feel that she should become his wife. Maalik has a plan in his mind & he is only waiting for Mana & Shehryaar to get married so that he can finally bid Gul Bahar good bye because he knows if he will divorce her before Mana’s marriage, then things will become rocky between her & her fiancé & then Saleha will get a chance to blame him & Zarri, so in order to avoid that, Maalik is being patient. I liked that in this episode, for the first time Zarri showed some care & affection towards Maalik too by asking if he has had his meal. I know it was quite typical & cheesy but I think it was the most subtle expression of affection Zarri could extend towards him.

Gul Bahar really meant something when she told Zarri to pack her stuff before she left Murree. It was obvious that she must’ve called Zarri’s brother Javed & told him to pick his little sister up. Does Gul Bahar really think that by creating a distance between Maalik & Zarri she’ll be able to draw them apart? Also, I am not sure if Saleha was involved in this plan or not because it can’t be a coincidence that a friend whom Saleha wasn’t even in contact with came to her mind & she thought of inviting her to Mana’s wedding especially when the cards haven’t been printed just as yet? I won’t be surprised if later we’ll get to know about Saleha’s involvement too because she is capable of anything nasty for the sake of her good-for-nothing daughter Mana!!!

I was surprised to see Sara Khan’s picture in Laila’s home & looks like Laila & her father have a sad story attached to them. Just like Laila, Laila’s father has become a fan of Khizer too & that seems genuine because usually uncles like him have quite an experience & they can judge a personality just in few interactions. More than Laila, I find her father’s inclination towards Khizer more relate-able probably because he takes him as his own son & feels for him because he knows that Khizer is going through a hard time.

Overall, this episode was good. I think there’s nothing more to show in Shehryaar & Mana’s track that’s why all of their conversations begin & end with the exact same dialogue uttered by Shehryaar which states ‘hamari shadi ke baad ye hoga, hamari shadi ke baad wo hoga’ & every single time, I roll my eyes because of the newness of their conversations!!! Anyways, I caan’t wait to see the next episode only to find out what Maalik’s reaction at Zarri’s departure would be. I am sure Maalik knows Gul Bahar too well to join the dots & figure out that she must be the mastermind behind all this. Even though Erum Akhtar looks amazing in the smoked out & thick eyeliner sort of eye-makeup but in the few scenes where she wasn’t wearing much eye-makeup, she looked approximately 10 years younger & fresh but having said that I believe she can rock both the makeup looks perfectly. Shamil Khan has never looked so good before & the subtlety in his expressions is making his acting seem more natural & effortless. Honestly speaking, even though I should be feeling bad, I sort of enjoyed seeing Shehryaar putting Saleha down, lol, because she deserves it. Anyways, please share your thoughts about this episode of Mana Ka Gharana.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

“Mein” Beqasoor !!! Episode 19

This drama is getting worse with every passing episode. The viewers have been watching Sadaf and Hira suffering, compromising and crying right from the first episode, 19 weeks of watching these women worrying about one thing or the other has been torturous enough and now when the drama should be wrapping up we see Hira contemplating a reunion with Ameen!! Just like every other silly step Hira took this time around too her reasons are very clear. She has always enjoyed playing the qurbani ka bakra and this time around a child is involved too therefore she has all the more reason to play the savior. Hira will do anything to save her sister’s marriage and ensure that her child has a father when he comes into this world. Don’t any of these characters have any common sense? Shehryar is Hira’s father too, what good did that do??

The confrontations between the two wives who were Phupo and Bhatiji not very long ago were nauseating. All these scenes had star plus written all over them! Dialogues like Shehryar ke bete ki maa mei bano gi were sickening. Is Shehryar really worth fighting over? Shehryar is not even willing to own this child but Sehr is bent on staying in his house to make sure that her son, who we are not even sure exists gets his due share in his father’s inheritance!! Although Sehr is going through hell but her make-up stayed as loud as it has always been all through tonight’s episode. Now only if our production houses would spend as much time and energy in finding good script as they do in making these dramas visually pleasing.

bq1

The lighting in this play is always perfect, the colors are beautiful and the make-up is always in place but other than that this play has absolutely nothing to offer. It is full of women who keep on making one stupid decision after the other and although the writer has tried to make Hira look like the ideal daughter and sister but she comes across as a very dim-witted person who can never take the right decisions. It is sad to see legends like Samina Peerzada, Sajjid Hassan, Salahuddin Tunio and even Waseem Abbas wasting their precious talent by being part of a drama that has absolutely nothing to offer. I have lost all interest in this drama, watching it is a pain and I cannot take anymore of Hira’s stupidity! I am certain that any viewers out there who felt something for some of the characters must have given up by now too.

How many of you watched this latest episode of Beqasoor? If you didn’t watch it, you did yourself a favour:) And if you watched it then please feel free to vent out!!

Meera Talks About ICC World Twenty

0

Meera always manages to be in the news for some reason or the other. This time she talked to the media before the ICC World Twenty and shared her views about the cricket team. She said that she supported the Pakistan cricket team whole heartedly and even her family members were continuously praying for the success of the Pakistani team. Meera also gave an invitation to the team to watch her film Hotal.

10

The media persons also asked her how she felt about Shahid Afridi’s statement that he received more love in India than he did in Pakistan. Meera answered this question in a very diplomatic way. She did not want to say anything that will offend the Pakistani team of Shahid Afridi in any way.

Zara Yaad Kar – Episode 01!

Ohkay so, the writing of Khalil ur Rehman Qamar, direction of Amna Nawaz Khan & production of ANK Productions; Zara Yaad Kar commenced tonight & honestly speaking, they gave us a perfect first episode that sparked the interest so well that I’m looking forward to the next episode already. We all are well aware of the magic Khalil ur Rehman Qamar is known to create through his thoughts in his writings & Amna Nawaz Khan left a great impact on the viewers who followed her amazing work in Shanakht, that is why, I have high hopes with this duo & I’m hoping that they will give us something memorable like their previous projects.

The first episode introduced the characters & their characteristics properly. Haadi (Zahid Ahmed) is legally married to Mahnoor (Sana Javed) & their big day is approaching in a few months time. Haadi lives as a tenant in a small room at a place of a School Teacher (Rashid Farooqui). The teacher’s family only has him & his daughter Uzma (Yumna Zaidi). Haadi shares a good bond with his house owner & they both enjoy their conversations over politics & different subjects. Uzma is involved in a one-sided love with Haadi & despite knowing that he has a wife, she feels the need to confess her feelings to him because she thinks she has that much of a right to do so. Haadi strictly tells her off that she shouldn’t feel that way because he is married & loves his wife sincerely.

Collage 1

I really liked the relationship both Haadi & Mahnoor share. Mahnoor also works & she lives with her mother & a younger brother. Haadi is possessive about Mahnoor & doesn’t hold back in telling her how protective he is of her. In their relationship, Mahnoor is definitely the dominant one but what I liked is that Haadi has accepted her the way she is. Yes, he does tell her what she must & she must not do but when it comes to him personally, he doesn’t mind doing what she likes because that’s his way of displaying his love for his wife. Both Haadi & Mahnoor trust each other as well but their ways of trusting is definitely different. In general, they both are very different people with different personality types & different temperaments but somehow they both comfortably complete each other.

Haadi feels obliged to tell Mahnoor about Uzma & her letter to which Mahnoor doesn’t react the way Haadi expects she would. Mahnoor knows that Haadi is loyal to her & that is why she doesn’t feel worried. Haadi believes in transparency between himself & his wife whereas Mahnoor doesn’t feel that way. She thinks if there are certain things that one can handle on their own then there’s no need to tell everything to one’s spouse. Mahnoor knows that Haadi is a bit too particular about minutest things that are related to her & if she continues to share everything with him, things might get difficult for her & Haadi both, that is why she does believe in keeping certain things to herself but more than that, she also believes in having a factor of trust & they both have that thing sorted. Mahnoor does love Haadi & she has accepted him the way he is but somewhere down the line she also belives in independence & that was made evident through the way she thinks & the things she says. I believe the things that do not matter much to Haadi about Mahnoor might come back & bite him because Mahnoor also thinks about herself a little more than she does about Haadi & that can cause a bit of a trouble to both of them.

Collage 02

Haadi believes in giving all that he’s got to his wife & Mahnoor believes in demanding from him. However, the way Haadi described Uzma in front of Mahnoor, it showed that she can be an ideal partner for Haadi or in other words, she could be the idea of an ideal partner for him. The way Uzma has conducted herself so far in front of Haadi, despite her honest & up front confession, Haadi still finds her respectable & a bit immature to not know what she is wishing for.

Waqar (Yasir Mazhar), who happens to be an Urdu teacher has just shifted in the house next to Mahnoor’s. He already has made an entry into their lives by seeking their help time & again. I am sure he has a major role to play in the episodes to come & his role won’t stop at just being their neighbor. So far he seems pretty decent & genteel, probably poles apart from Mahnoor too, so let’s see what role he has to play in this story.

I really liked how simple the very first episode was & how simply it was directed. The conversations were clear & straight forward & in very few scenes they introduced the characters in great deal. I don’t know why but I somehow liked Mahnoor’s character, only for the fact that she was herself in front of Haadi & she doesn’t believe in pretentiousness. I know in the episodes to come, she will prove out to be someone who’s incompatible with Haadi but for now, I also liked the acceptance Haadi has shown towards her. Indeed, in this relationship, he is the one who’s at the giving end & Mahnoor is at the receiving end so this factor as well as Mahnoor’s attitude & to some extent her immaturity will become few of the major reasons behind them drifting apart but for now, I liked the way they both are happy with each other.

Collage 03

Overall, this episode was really nice. As usual, the conversations were simple yet well-written & that’s like a done deal in any of Khalil ur Rehman Qamar’s dramas. I liked how Amna Nawaz Khan has kept it simple & there wasn’t anything exaggerated or overdone in this entire episode. I liked how all the actors have acted. Sana Javed really did Mahnoor’s character a justice, she was flawless as a carefree, open-minded Mahnoor, however, I do feel Sana needs to experiment with her looks or styling a little because she looks the same in every drama of hers. Zahid Ahmed did a great job too like he always does, I especially liked his expressions when he shows up at Mahnoor’s door after an accident, where he is trying not to look like a fool by showing up like that, yet he is smiling because Mahnoor is laughing at him, haha, those expressions were priceless. Also, I think Zahid Ahmed looked quite different, may be because he has lost a bit of weight & he had a different haircut, but he looked quite different & it was good to see him experimenting with his looks. Yumna Zaidi didn’t have many scenes but she left an impact too & in just these few moments she showed what Uzma is like. She is hopelessly in love with a married man & believes in doing what she can for him, without expecting anything in return. Yumna Zaidi’s styling was good in a sense that just in a first glimpse of her you can tell that she’s a very domesticated sort of a girl.

I must say I thoroughly enjoyed the very first episode & I am looking forward to the next one too. However, I must add that I have a thing against those patent & non-stop Alaaps of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, I feel they sort of distract me from my thoughts while I am watching an episode & for that I am hoping that they don’t rely too much on those Alaaps in the rest of the episodes. So that’s all from my side & please feel free to share your thoughts about this episode of Zara Yaad Kar.

Mera Yaar Miladay – Episode 6

Right. So forget Aslam-Dabbu faceoff, Mushq-Fahd love story, Master Sb’s heart troubles – what stayed with me the most at the end of the episode was – the bun kebab!! Woh bhi special wala! It has been years since I have been able to have a street side bun kebab in Pakistan and I realised watching that scene how badly I missed it.

Back to less important matters then. Aslam Bhai finds out Master Sb is in the hospital and shows up there to pay the bill. I thought it was an act of goodwill or to show Master Sb he is the ‘better’ bhai but we learn later that it was anything but.

mymd1

I know I was complaining about the lack of chemistry between Sajal and Ahmed Ali but I have to say their scenes in the kitchen and when he shows up to take food to the hospital seemed very convincing. Sajal was able to portray all the emotions Mushq was feeling really well. I could actually feel her happiness at the sight of Fahd, her distress at her father being unwell, guilt for being blamed for his troubles and her impatience to be with Fahd.

Fahd has become driver, delivery wala, electrician, male attendant , you name it. Cynical old me could not help wondering though how artificial his concern must be for the family and how hypocritical he was not to be giving his widowed mother a second thought while he is running around after Master Sb’s family. Anyways, he tells Mushq they need to take things slowly although she seems to be losing patience. It’s like Fahd wants to play a test match innings while Mushq is all out for a twenty 20!

I am not sure who was following the journey of the Rs.24,500 hospital bill more avidly – me or Thor ka desi bhai. Aslam Bhai pays the bill and we learn that he tells the receptionist that the bill has been paid by Dabbu Bhai. When Master Sb finds out, he is outraged and confronts Dabbu and throws the money back in his face. Dabbu shows up at Aslam Bhai’s and throws the money back at him and in that whole intense (not) scene all I seemed to notice was how Thor’s brother was eyeing the money. This Master Sb – khud tau ek angina attack ho gaya hai I am not sure if I will end up getting one watching the way he trembles and keels over every other second. The way he was oscillating up, down and everywhere in the scene where he confronts Dabbu, I wanted to fetch him a stretcher to collapse on!

mymd2

Let’s not forget Mehru ji because this episode gave us a bit more of an insight into her chamak chalo existence. Her conversation with her mother was a bit confusing to me. Mehru and her mother did not seem to share the most cordial of relations and I was given the impression that Mehru does not love Dabbu and is aware he is not rich but she knows he loves her and she feels that is her way to escape. Later, when she is chomping away in his car, we learn that she has made him promise that he does not tell anyone they are seeing each other. That does clarify the confusion I kept facing in the earlier episodes wondering whether she has told him she loves him or not but now that raises the question of why keep the relationship a secret. Why not let Dabbu marry her? Mrs. Dabbu doesn’t sound charming enough? I mean, it’s not like he is a gunda and her mother will refuse – he is a social worker, remember? Although I doubt social workers are as scantily dressed as he was in that green shirt!

mymd3

And oh dear. Zeba zeba zeba. I have only seen Zeba sulking around with her distracting ringlets and the couple of times she decided to smile and giggle in this episode sent shivers down my spine – and definitely down Mushq’s. Dadi and Master Sb seem to think Fahd and Zeba are perfect for each other. I wonder why they did not think of Mushq but then given Mushq’s track record they probably did not want to jinx this rishta.
This episode was definitely better than the previous one. There is something about Firdous Jamal that you can not help but feel the chemistry he has with his younger male co-stars as in Kisay Chahoon with Ali abbas and now with Ahmed Ali. I love Dadi’s character, such a positive loving matriarch. Her Dabbu Chabbu comment really made me laugh.
I may cause a few raised eyebrows with this comment and mine are halfway there (maybe), but I like Mera Yaar Miladay so far. True, it is no cliffhanger, not a story with mind boggling twists and turns but I like how it is not very intense (minus Master Sb’s ever impending heart attacks!) and makes for an easy watch.
The preview for next week showed Master Sb becoming suspicious that Fahd knows Dabbu and I suppose that will cause problems. I do not want to see too much of Aslam Bhai, his scenes with Dabbu do not seem to add much to the story although I believe they are meant to. I do have a niggling thought and would love if anyone could enlighten me – where exactly is Mushq’s room?! No matter which corner of the house Fahad is in or out for that matter, Zeba shows up but how does he manage to have all these clandestine meetings with Mushq by the bedroom window without anyone spotting him?

How many of you watched this episode? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Mann Mayal – Episode 8

This was an extremely depressing episode. I love Talat Hussain’s acting but watching this old man dependent on people who don’t have an ounce of sympathy for him even was just plain upsetting. The whole diaper scene was unnecessary, stretched and it was in bad taste. Kuki and Jamil’s attitude and intentions have been made clear by the writer through different scenes and Ifty’s father’s helplessness is quite clear too therefore covering every single aspect of his life from food to diaper change was simply pointless! Ifty’s father is perfectly fine mentally and now with Salahuddin around he has a good opportunity to call a lawyer and change his will but even then he stays dependent on his son. Also, wouldn’t he be better off alone? I just hope that we are watching this particular track in the story for a good reason and it has some relevance to how the story unfolds in the future.

mm

Tonight’s episode opened with a conversation between Mikael and a brand new Mannu. Through this conversation the viewers found out why Mikael married Mannu. Which made me wonder why couldn’t Mikael make changes in his own personality to please his parents? Mikael has been shown as one of those men who think that their wife is like a toy which he brought into the house to please his parents and at the same time he wants Mannu to party with him. Accepting something like drinking and gambling is very difficult for any girl who has not seen her father or brothers do these kinds of things therefore  watching Mannu accept all these thing until her Mother In Law gave her a lecture was actually shocking and very difficult to relate to. Also, it seemed like Mannu’s Mother In Law was more than willing to change her in the last episode but now she misses the old Mannu. All these changes and then Mannu’s telephonic conversation with her family confused me about the timeline. How long has it been since Mannu got married? Chachi has changed, Sara Baji was expecting therefore a lot had changed in her house. Also, why hadn’t she talked to her family in such a long time? Usually girls stay in touch with their family even after getting married. If Mannu could call Salahuddin because she felt lonely then why couldn’t she call her mother? The only good thing about this scene was the way Mannu missed her old life while talking to her family, other than that it seems really odd when it is shown in our dramas that girls lose all contact with family once they get married. Even after all this time (not sure how much time) Salahuddin’s parents are still not talking to him and they are completely out of the picture.

mm1

Mannu’s dialogue “mei unhe dhoka nahi de sakti “ was not in line with her character at all. When Mikael asked her to give his parents the impression that she was still the same old person Mannu said she couldn’t do that because that would be like betraying their trust. Isn’t Mannu giving her own family dhoka? Would her family approve of her present lifestyle? Mannu’s character is getting more confusing with every passing episode. There are a lot of reasons why she would be clueless but why isn’t she turning towards her family for help or advice? Chachi did not let Sara go back to her husband because of a minor issue therefore it is quite likely that she would take a stand for Mannu if she ever found out what was going on. Everything that Mannu’s Mother In Law said was very true but then it is too late for confessions!

mm3

There were absolutely no ‘happy moments’ in this episode and it was sad to see a girl like Mannu changing herself with every advice she got only to please people. While I am not happy with the recent changes in Mannu’s character, I am very impressed with Maya Ali’s acting. Hamza Ali Abbasi was also spot on in all the scenes and especially the one in which he walks out of Ifty’s house. All the actors did their part well in tonight’s episode but the recent developments were just plain depressing and disappointing. Mannu and Salahuddin’s love story seems like ancient history now and their present life doesn’t have anything positive to offer. The play has lost its filmy touch as well, it has turned into a very realistic play with shadi shuda aur naukri pesha zindagi ke maslay! The preview of the next episode suggested that our hero and heroine’s troubles are far from over.

Bhai – Episodes 12 – 13

Chalo jee, Hammad nay lipstick kay saath saath lagta hai churiyan bhi pehn rakhi hain! I could not help snicker at how Ifra stood up to defend Hammad and even after she told Ashraf off, Hammad still stood behind her till Ashraf left! In that moment of madness, I will admit I could see why Ashraf said she was ‘auraton ki Ashraf’ except, oh wait, she was defending Hammad. Ah well, need I spell it out. And cherry on top – Hammad is ‘rukhsatofied’ to Ifra’s house. I know he was sent so that Ashraf could not do him any harm but it still made me laugh.

bhai1

Anyhow, we see Ashraf ‘heartbroken’, sulking and uncharacteristically quiet. There were a lot of repetitive scenes with Ashraf insisting his parents could have prevented the nikkah from happening and how they have always favoured Hammad over him. I kept waiting for Ashraf to erupt, wreak havoc but nothing seemed to happen until he overheard Saira declaring her love to Ebad on the phone. He then vows that if he did not get the ‘love of his life’ he would make sure nobody else in his family would. When he speaks to Jawad about marriage to Saira and the way Jawad’s face fell, it confirmed my suspicions that he likes Rabab after that scene earlier when Rabab is watering the plants and they exchange smiles. I kept thinking Rabab would speak up when Shakeela tells her daughters that Manzoor has said that if Saira will not marry Jawad then Rabab will have to. I thought Rabab liked him too and that would have solved that problem right there but maybe I was mistaken.

Ebad is able to convince his parents to go to Saira’s house with his rishta. Ashraf is suspicious and bursts in on the scene and in his characteristic way sends them packing. It was almost comical how Ashraf bent down to peer into Ebad’s face and then grabbed him, messing up his carefully made ‘cheerum’ (maang) and suit! I wondered at Khadija earlier encouraging Saira to ‘befriend’ Ebad and thought why would she do that when she knows Ashraf will probably rip Saira apart when he finds out. But she manages to convince her mother to have Ebad send his parents under the impression that ‘rishtay wali khala’ arranged the meeting.

I know Ashraf was despicable when he egged on Sufiyan and had Khadija divorced and his anger towards his sisters was also excessive but I did not really hate Ashraf yet because the light moments of his ‘romaaaaance’ made me laugh. But the way he dragged Saira down the stairs was awful and oh my God, how many times has he almost strangled her?! I have lost count. I could not help noticing each time though how Saboor Ali looked like a poor duck having its neck wrung! So now, choosni is locked up. As usual, Hammad was not there during the whole rishta and punishment scene. Seems like everything happens during his working hours.

bhai2

I suppose this is Ashraf’s plan now. After wallowing in self pity, he has risen now to make everyone who ‘schemed’ against him pay. I am surprised he has not done anything truly nasty to Hammad yet. I felt for Shakeela today, torn between trying to do right by all her children and thought that Seemi Raheel has done justice to her character.

I know we often say so and so episode seemed like a filler – I feel like Rabab is a filler! I am not sure what her role has been so far besides covering her head and looking up from lowered eyes like a gazelle.

bhai4

Maha Warsi seems to have taken a backseat now that she has gotten married. Overall, these two episodes were just okay with the first being a bit slow with the ‘calm before the storm’ and then Ashraf finally erupting. I wonder if we have seen the last of Ebad now. Hammad had said he had total faith in Saira and I wonder how he will react to the whole Ebad-Saira scenario for if he becomes a ‘ghairat mand’ brother then would that not be double standards for he wooed Ifra too. I hope the rest of the drama does not focus on the extremes Ashraf will go to exact his revenge. Did you watch these two episodes of Bhai? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Tere Mere Beech – Episode 16!

Ohkay so, this episode of Tere Mere Beech was torturous to say the least but I think the note at which it ended saved the day & stopped this drama from getting ruined for me. This episode was torturous not because of Hareem but because of Zahida, Nadia, Sadia & also the ghost appearance of Nighat which obviously did the trick & left a bad taste in the mouth but then can you expect anything good or positive from the ghosts who only show up to haunt people?

Nighat’s self-pity is continuing in her grave as well, that is why she decided to show up again & taunt Hareem. Why does late Nighat & now her current ghost always insist on the fact that Hareem should understand how hard it must’ve been on Nighat to give her daughter away? Why can’t Nighat The Ghost understand that no, she can not expect an infant to understand the crime her mother committed by handing the child over to someone else without giving her a fair bit of a justification. Just because Nighat felt that Hareem could have ‘packet ka doodh’ she thought she was eligible to be given away? It is absolutely ridiculous. I feel like smacking Nighat every single time she says that Hareem should understand whereas she should be the one doing ALL the understanding & forcing her good-for-nothing, filled-with-venom daughters to understand their sister Hareem too because she lead a disturbed life by juggling between two failed & confused to the core mothers!!!

Oh well, I so wish when Qadeer attacked Shabbir’s car, Zahida had gone for a ride with her husband too because honestly speaking, her character is useless, like legit useless because she has no contribution, nor in the story neither in anyone’s life. Also, if Zahida got lucky before, I wish that now Nighat pulls Zahida into the limbo where she herself resides because the amount of screaming, yelling, crying, caterwauling & moaning this woman does is absolutely annoying.

I really wish in stead of coming out of her grave to taunt Hareem, Nighat had contacted her ‘phor’ daughter Sadia & taught her a thing or two about managing household chores. I am glad that Nighat’s khush fehmi must have gone down the drain by seeing that her perfect daughter wasn’t so perfect after all because she couldn’t do anything on her own. Also, I wish someone would pull the annoying curled flick of Zahida & pin it up at the back of her scalp because seems like nothing survived in this drama but the curls of her hair. Everything about Zahida is so OTT that it is not even funny. I think it would’ve been better if she had pinned up her curls & decided to become a mother to Sadia & Hareem in stead of just crying in an annoying voice, demanding a cup of tea from Hareem like she was a guest & then putting all the blame on Hareem for everything that went wrong.

If Zahida is OTT then Nadia & Sadia are competing in that pageant too because looks like when Nighat passed away, she passed on her annoyance as an inheritance to both Nadia & Sadia. I hated the way they kept on blaming Hareem for everything possible. Why didn’t Nadia tell Sadia that she must’ve been irresponsible herself to burn her hand so badly? Why were they dragging Hareem into everything? Also, the way Zahida lost sight of Hareem & then started blaming her made me dislike her even more. Hareem is suffering from depression because no one is understanding what she is going through, no one understands the love-hate relationship she had with Nighat & how deeply she is hurt by Fahad’s absence, they think it is ohkay to taunt her & question her as to why she cries while remembering her mother? Hareem must be suffering from a mere depression, but they all have become psychos themselves & psychopathy is lailaaj!

It was funny to see Ali’s mother & brother popping out of nowhere after I guess a decade? I guess the director must’ve called them to show up in order to welcome the VVIP guest Sadia who Nadia brought into her house without even notifying her mother in law. I guess Nadia was quite conscious of the likes & dislikes of her MIL but the way she is doing everything independetly is quite unconvincing. Also, how old is Asad? 12 years or may be 10? He doesn’t have anything productive to do? I am sure now Nadia won’t mind the blooming chemistry between Asad & Sadia & she’d be rooting for their marriage too. I am so tired of seeing the furrowed brows of Sadia & augmented lips of Nadia but sadly, all their conversations are unnecessarily long & intolerable. They are just as useless as Zahida!!!

I guess Hareem will get 3rd time lucky because now she will come across a woman who will actually become a mother to her, guide & counsel her the best way possible. Hina Bayat’s addition to this drama at this stage seems promising & refreshing. The preview of the next episode suggested that the clan of psychopaths will assume that Hareem is officially out of their lives & I am thanking the writer for this twist because it means they won’t be able to play the blame-game anymore & will be gone from Hareem’s life for good. I can’t wait to see what positive influence Hina Bayat’s character will have on Hareem’s life & what changes will her counselling bring in Hareem’s personality. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Tere Mere Beech!
