Pakistani drama industry is filled with talented actors. When the drama writers conceive a character and have an image of what it will be like in their minds, it then becomes a responsibility of the assigned actor to breathe life into the character they have been chosen to portray. In every season, Pakistani drama viewers get to see a lot of dramas, where some do well in terms of popularity, some don’t. However, in each one of those dramas, irrespective of how the drama is doing, on the whole, there are always those actors who give their heart and soul to their characters, because of which they end up leaving a long-lasting impression with their phenomenal performances.
It is very important for an actor to have a grip over the character they are playing and that is how they end up owning it and making it unforgettable. Every season, Pakistani drama viewers come across such brilliantly performed characters which makes them feel that they were meant to be portrayed by these actors and no one else could’ve done justice to them. This season is no different and with so many dramas that are on air right now, there are some actors who are standing out more because of how they have approached their characters and make them outstanding.
Here is the list of those Pakistani actors who have owned their characters this season:
Waseem Abbas – Imtiyaz (Kashf)
The viewers of drama serial Kashf unanimously feel that Waseem Abbas is the star of the show. The way he has portrayed the character of Imtiyaz has convinced the viewers that no other actor could’ve done justice to this character the way Waseem Abbas has. Imtiyaz is shown to be a selfish man who changes his mannerisms and antics whenever he wants the situation to play up to his advantage. This character has a lot of shades and Waseem Abbas has shown a lot of variation because the viewers got to see him as a stern, aloof and selfish father to then becoming a father who wanted to make sure that his daughters knew he was there for them.
Imtiyaz is a calculative and manipulative person and he doesn’t mind using all his prowess to control his eldest daughter Kashf. The change in his behavior and attitude from time to time brings in the comedy quotient to the drama which revolves around such a serious subject and has an overall grim feeling to it. Waseem Abbas definitely is is one of those actors who has owned his character this season.
Hira Mani – Kashf (Kashf)
There is no denying the fact that Hira Mani has portrayed the character of Kashf convincingly. The kind of attitude, body language, and appeal that was the demand of the character have been fulfilled by Hira Mani. Right from the beginning until this stage of the drama, there has not been a time when the viewers felt that Hira Mani lost the grip of this character. She has done complete justice to the character of Kashf who has nothing but immense respect for her family members in her heart, she has loved them selflessly and continues to do so despite seeing how transparently selfish and self-centered they all have been.
In the initial episodes, Hira Mani put an extra effort to make sure that Kashf’s niceness comes through and the way she approached this character made it easier for the viewers to understand what was going on in Kashf’s mind. She is a perfectly written character that has been portrayed in an excellent manner by Hira Mani. After seeing her as Kashf, there’s no doubt left that only Hira Mani could do justice to this character.
Mawra Hocane – Anaya (Sabaat)
It is a rarity these days that Pakistani drama viewers get to see such strong, independent, and inspirational characters such as Anaya. This is the reason Anaya, played by Mawra Hocane is probably the only best thing about the entire drama serial Sabaat. When the drama began, the viewers felt underwhelmed and couldn’t help but notice the execution errors but the character of Anaya gave them enough reasons to continue watching and now her story has easily become everyone’s favorite.
Anaya is a strong character who does have her own fears but she knows how to face them. She understands that it is important to take charge of the situation and fight what comes her way. In the recent episode of Sabaat, Anaya’s character has impressed the viewers and they can not help appreciate Mawra Hocane for playing such a strong and inspirational character that has imparted such a good lesson to young girls. Mawra Hocane made sure that she does justice to the character of Anaya and the way she has portrayed it with simplicity and clarity goes to show that she as an actor understood the impact this character will make, this is why she focused on making it substantial.
Saba Hameed – Shireen (Prem Gali)
Saba Hameed is known for playing substantial characters. Although she mostly plays the roles of mother and mother in law, in every single role, she makes sure she brings in a lot of variety and range. It is interesting to note that despite working for so many years, Saba Hameed is one of those actresses who does not settle for monotony and always makes sure she adds something unique to her characters.
This is the reason, the character of Shireen happens to be the most dynamic, unique, and probably the best character of Prem Gali. The drama has a lot of other powerful and strong characters too but for the viewers of Prem Gali, Saba Hameed’s character was what convinced them to continue watching because they all wanted to see Shireen and her story. Saba Hameed’s overall styling and dialogue delivery is nothing short of perfection in this drama and she looks absolutely stunning as Shireen.
Mohammad Ahmed – Aziz (Sabaat)
There is no denying the fact that Sir Mohammad Ahmed puts his heart and soul into all the characters that he plays. He is one of those finest actors in the Pakistani drama industry who always bring something unique to the table and gives off such a warm and fatherly vibe to all the viewers who love to watch his performance in dramas. In drama serial Sabaat, Sir Mohammad Ahmed played the role of Aziz, a loving father to his only daughter who wanted to guide her through every step of her life.
Aziz had profound lessons to teach to his daughter Anaya and had such a strong relationship with her that without even Anaya saying anything, he understood the emotional turmoil she was faced with. It was nothing short of a treat to see him play the character of Aziz, this is the reason when the character passed away, the viewers felt overwhelmed with the emotion. His performance was phenomenal and it showed that he actually understood that his character was special, therefore he wanted to portray it in such a manner as well.
Junaid Khan – Wajdan (Kashf)
Junaid Khan has been a part of the drama industry for a long time now. He has some amazing projects to his credit but the way he has approached Wajdan’s character and has added certain personality traits to him such as his quirk and wit make it a very special character. It goes to show that this time around, Junaid Khan himself wanted to make Wajdan a unique and memorable character, therefore he made sure that he approached as well as portrayed it with clarity.
Wajdan has been clear right from the beginning and he is one such person who has analyzed everything that goes around him, therefore he makes his moves carefully and wants nothing but the best for his better half. Wajdan believes in finding solutions and that makes him a farsighted character. The way Junaid Khan has played this character goes to show that he has owned it and his and Hira Mani’s strong on-screen chemistry has made things even better for the Kashf leading duo.
Faiza Hassan – Gohar (Nand)
Drama serial Nand is all about one and only character; Gohar, which automatically makes it about one and only actor playing that character; Faiza Hassan. Faiza Hassan has made a comeback after a long time on the TV and to see her play such a negative character with such finesse is nothing short of a treat. Faiza Hassan is not only convincing as Gohar but has actually made the viewers resent her character, which is her win as an actor.
It is only because of Faiza Hassan’s grip on the character, that she has succeeded in showing the ugly side of a narcissistic woman like Gohar who doesn’t mind ruining people’s lives because of her sadistic reasons. She is envious and is probably a victim of her own weaknesses because she fails to see the niceness in the people around her who have already done so much for her. Faiza Hassan definitely has nailed this character and has made it totally her own.
Farhan Saeed – Hamza (Prem Gali)
Farhan Saeed is very selective when it comes to picking up the projects. After Suno Chanda, it seems he as well as the people from the industry have had a realization that he is a very convincing actor with great comic timing, this is why he was approached to play the character of Hamza.
Farhan Saeed has played this character with a lot of grace, yet he has also added that cute boyish charm to it which shows that he is just a guy-next-door who has fallen hard in love. Farhan Saeed’s effortless dialogue delivery along with certain minute expressions make it very obvious that he had a clear picture in mind as to how he wanted the character of Hamza to appear on the screen. So far, Farhan Saeed also happens to be one of the best parts of Prem Gali who is making the drama worthwhile for the audience with his portrayal of Hamza.
Neelam Munir – Ayeza (Bikhre Moti)
Neelam Munir is also one of those few actresses who are very selective about the kind of work they do. Neelam Munir is at this stage where after getting the limelight after Dil Mom Ka Diya, she did not just end up signing one project after another. In fact, she became a lot more conscious about the choices she was now going to make because she understood that she had a responsibility that comes with fame. This is the reason, Neelam Munir chose to play the character of Ayeza, an aunt who sacrifices her own life, her dreams, her aspirations only for the sake of her dead sister’s children.
Ayeza has always been a self-assured and level-headed person who had the clarity of thoughts and vision. This is what has helped her in her life although the decision she made was not favorable she knew she just could not turn a blind eye against her sister’s children. Neelam Munir has played an inspirational character as Ayeza and has given such a memorable performance, which has convinced the viewers that only she could do justice to it.
Maha Hassan – Farwa (Nand)
Farwa is an inspirational character in drama serial Nand, which has been played by Maha Hassan. Although Maha Hassan is a fresh face of the Pakistani drama industry. The kind of vision she has when it comes to her career goes to show that she is here to make a difference and she is going to reflect it through the choices she is going to make. Maha Hassan has explained how she had a certain vision for the character of Farwa and how she wanted to show her as a strong-willed, independent, and assertive young girl.
It is interesting to note that Maha Hassan has made Farwa look exactly how she wanted to and this is the reason, all the viewers of drama serial Nand are not short of praises for her character as well as her work. Maha Hassan has not only owned the character of Farwa but has shown that she did her part of the homework and came up with her own perspective and vision to portray it, because of which she succeeded in doing such a convincing job.
Sonya Hussyn – Hoorain (Saraab)
In the past, a lot of dramas have been produced which have promised to create awareness about mental health and the people dealing with certain issues. Saraab was promoted as a story of a schizophrenic girl and as the drama began and progressed, the viewers could clearly see that the entire team starting from the writer to the actor has done their part of the research. This is exactly the reason why Sonya Hussyn has been able to do justice to the character of Hoorain because she has given such a measured performance, which goes to show that she has closely studied the subject and understood the job that was assigned to her.
This is exactly the reason why Sonya Hussyn has been getting appreciated for her phenomenal performance in Saraab because she has impressed the viewers with her realistic portrayal of a girl suffering from schizophrenia. Sonya Hussyn has established herself as a strong and powerful performer but to see outdoing herself especially in a role like this one is super impressive.
Sabeena Farooq – Zoya (Kashf)
Sabeena Farooq is comparatively a fresh addition to the Pakistani drama industry. In a short span of time, she has worked in big-budgeted dramas and has given convincing performances. However, in drama serial Kashf, she plays the role of a spoilt selfish younger sister who has her eyes on her sister’s husband.
Sabeena Farooq has been so realistic as Zoya that she has all the viewers hating her for being so evil and aloof. Sabeena Farooq has been so effortless that she has forced the viewers to feel that this character was made for her and only she could do justice to it. Her effortless dialogue delivery, her expressions, and timing as Zoya has impressed the viewers. She has a bright future ahead because she has already shown her potential and caliber as an actor.
Urwa Hocane – Guddi (Mushk)
Drama serial Mushk is still in the initial stages but the character of Guddi has everyone talking about it. The writer Imran Ashraf has written a full-fledged love story with some grim angles to it, however, the character of Guddi is not only unique but a breath of fresh air. She is far ahead of everyone in wit and intelligence. The way Urwa Hocane has played this character goes to show that she has a lot to offer as an actor and she can do complete justice to such dynamic characters who are unique in their own way.
Urwa Hocane’s portrayal as Guddi makes the viewers look forward to her scenes in the drama and the factor of unpredictability that comes with her character makes things far more interesting. The best aspect of her character is that she lives life on her own terms but because she feels responsible for her family’s well-being she mends her ways. Urwa Hocane has definitely elevated the level of the drama with her performance and she has owned the character of Guddi.
Minal Khan – Nisha (Jalan)
Although drama serial Jalan has been surrounded with one controversy after another because of its questionable storyline, it can not be denied that the viewers absolutely did not expect to see Minal Khan playing such a negative character with so much of conviction. Minal Khan has been a part of a lot of dramas but the viewers have mostly seen her play the damsel in distress but this time around, Minal Khan actually wanted to show that she has a lot of range as an actor.
The grip Minal Khan has on Nisha makes the viewers feel that this character was written by the writer with her picture in mind. Every step of the way, she has convincingly portrayed all the negative personality traits of Nisha. Although the drama has failed to impress the viewers there is no denying the fact that Minal Khan has owned this character and given a very convincing performance.
This completes the list of all those brilliant Pakistani actors who have owned their characters this season. Which one of these characters is your favorite and are you of the same opinion that all they have been portrayed convincingly by all the actors. Feel free to share your opinion.

His death was sudden as he was a policeman and died in an encounter after receiving a bullet wound in his head. My mother says I was shaking when I heard the news. Then I turned to her and told her that you have said this to me now but now we won’t ever talk about it. This was my response as a six-year-old kid.”

Ohkay so, this episode of Prem Gali was fun & interesting to watch. Prem Gali is now at that stage where I am actually enjoying the way the story is progressing & I am glad that there is so much happening in the lives of the main leads that the pace now seems fast. One of the strengths of this drama in my opinion is the interactions between the characters & their one-liners. It is always interesting to find out what each one of them has to say because one thing’s for sure, they all are opinionated & do not hold back in voicing them out.
Hamza’s Plan
Hamza took his job very seriously & decided he had to arrange a few proposals for Joya so that in the end Shireen gets disappointed & chooses him to be Joya’s life partner. One would actually think why isn’t Hamza being honest & upfront but considering the kind of person Hamza is, he fears Shireen’s rejection because he knows it is going to be very hard to undo if something of that sort happened as Shireen is not someone who changes her mind easily. By now, everyone is pretty aware of the kind of nature Shireen has & Hamza is dealing with this entire situation keeping that in mind. I absolutely loved the interactions that Shireen & Hamza had. It is always interesting to note how Shireen doesn’t allow anyone to act over-smart or efficient in front of her – the pani & ilaichi comment was made by Hamza because he wanted to make sure that Shireen sees how over efficient he is but she corrected him then & there. I liked seeing how Shireen cut Hamza short almost at all the instances & didn’t give him an edge. Although it’s a simple love story the way Faiza Iftikhar has added this angle to it which makes it a lot more complicated & fun at the same time.
This entire episode definitely belonged to Farhan Saeed & Hamza of course because he ran the show & was in the limelight the entire time. It was enjoyable to watch him come up with one plan after another, he also posed to be quite confident in front of his friends but in reality, he was losing his mind over the thoughts of exposing Joya to so many suitors who might approve of her.
I must say, another beautiful & endearing part of this episode was Rahat’s support to Hamza & Joya. I like how Faiza Iftikhar had established the bond between Rahat & Joya right from the beginning but showing that Joya’s grandmother was always in touch with her emotions. We have always seen Rahat being supportive of Joya & feeling a lot for her. Out of all the people, Rahat is the only one who understands how hard Shireen has been on her only daughter, that is why she requested Shireen to allow Joya the freedom of meeting her friend Fari or as much as having a pet. This is exactly why now when she easily approved of Hamza, it didn’t come as a surprise because this is exactly the kind of relationship both Joya & Rahat have. They have this equation where Joya has Rahat’s back & that turned out to be the case this time around too. All the things Rahat said to Joya were absolutely sweet & it is nice to know that Rahat totally saw Hamza as an eligible bachelor & suitable life-partner for Joya. I am glad that Joya & Hamza have Rahat on board with their plan & now everything is being taken care of by her & Hamza doesn’t have to worry much.
Another fun interaction was between Hatim & his father related to the zodiac signs & zaicha that his father wished he had checked before Hatim was born. Luqman too has started bonding with Musarrat & they both get to talk about their emotional baggage with each other. It was nice to see Musarrat being comfortable around Luqman, though it was unintentional they both seemed fine with the idea of interacting with each other, it wasn’t like they were awkward or having a hard time talking.
Fun Interactions
This episode of Prem Gali was quite interesting to watch. All the characters have grown on me & I like seeing them interact. Farhan Saeed was definitely the star of this episode. Sohai Ali Abro was cute as Joya. Abdullah Farhat has definitely made Luqman a very interesting character, his dejected body language & the never-changing forlorn expression on his face actually make me feel for him quite a lot. Saba Hameed, Shamim Hilali & Uzma Hassan are convincingly playing their characters. The story is definitely getting better with each passing episode. It is definitely going to be fun watching Hamza & Rahat’s plan unfold, with Joya assisting them further. The comedy quotient in this drama is absolutely amazing, all the interactions Rahat & even Shireen had with the guests were quite amusing. The director has done his part well & made sure that he does justice to all the characters that Faiza Iftikhar has given such dynamic personalities to. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Prem Gali.

Acting is a difficult field since it entails not only hard work but there is also a great deal of pressure on the actor to choose the right roles. If an actor plays a particular role convincingly then there are also chances that he or she will be typecast. Therefore, it is extremely important for an actor’s growth to continuously reinvent himself by avoiding such typecasting. Although the Pakistani drama industry has plenty of gifted actors, there are only a few of them who take up challenging roles. There are fewer who manage to make an impression on the viewers when they take up such roles. Then there are those actors who are even fewer in numbers who can breathe life into every single character they play. Good acting requires a basic understanding of the script, the character being played by the actor, practice and most importantly leaving the inhibitions far behind. The treatment an actor gives to a particular role makes all the difference.
Sometimes even the most challenging role on paper does not leave an impact if the actor performing the role fails to bring out the nuances needed to make it more believable and human. There are other times when some actors go over-the-top in order to make their presence felt and as a result of that they turn the character into something larger-than-life. When this happens then the viewers might not be able to point flaws in the performance but they are not able to relate to the characters. Even some of the most talented actors fail to make an impression in challenging roles because they try too hard. There are also so many such actors who took up challenging roles but ended up underplaying them and as a result, the essence of the character was completely lost on screen.
Here are those amazingly talented actors who took up challenging roles and ended up giving some of the best performances of their careers.
Adnan Siddiqui – Sammi
Adnan Siddiqui is incredibly talented but he has also been typecast to the extreme. In drama serial Sammi he stepped out of his comfort zone and played the role of an antihero. His role was both meaningful and substantial. The look he sported to play this character was just as different as the role itself. It is always good watching an actor step out of his comfort zone and do something different especially after being part of the industry for such a long time. This basically shows that an actor does not have a shelf life especially when he is dedicated to his craft and willing to take risks. As compared to some of the other actors in the list, Adnan Siddiqui has not taken enough risks but this role he decided to take up was definitely one which showed his graph as a commendable performer.
Ahad Raza Mir – Ye Dil Mera
Ahad Raza Mir does not have as much experience in the field of acting as some of the other actors do. His knowledge and passion for acting however put him in the same league as some of the most seasoned actors. Even though most viewers would have gladly accepted Ahad Raza Mir in typical hero roles alongside some of the leading heroines of the industry but he did not settle for such roles. He chose to play different complicated characters and each one of them offered something new. His role in Ye Dil Mera was a challenging one yet his effortless yet apt portrayal made it the kind of role which showed his diversity as an actor. He can easily be termed as one of those few relatively new actors who do not compromise on quality when choosing their projects.
Ahsan Khan – Udaari
Ahsan Khan was typecast for the longest time as the done-to-death leading man with no substance or appeal. His primary job in most of the dramas was to look good. The only negative role he played was in Pani Jesa Pyar and most of the viewers had even stopped questioning his choices since they had pretty much given up on him. At such a stage, Ahsan Khan decided to do a negative character in Udaari which was a big gamble especially for someone who was evidently comfortable in the kind of characters he was playing. It won’t be wrong to say that this character reintroduced Ahsan Khan to the audience and once again the viewers started taking him more seriously. This was perhaps a defining moment for Ahsan Khan as well because he stepped out of his comfort zone and nailed a challenging character. The actor who always looked trim and proper on-screen sported a look in Udaari that went so well with his character but was completely different from what he and the viewers were used to. His performance in Udaari made a lasting impression.
Bilal Abbas Khan – Pyar Ke Sadqay
Bilal Abbas Khan is another actor who got himself recognized as a serious character actor in the beginning of his career. Even though he is a handsome young man who can easily get away with not playing character roles, Bilal Abbas is never afraid to experiment and he is equally excited about every new project. After playing a negative role in Cheekh, he could easily have been typecast had he not chosen to play a completely different and extremely challenging character in Pyar Ke Sadqay. Even those viewers who were not fans before were impressed by Bilal Abbas’ solid performance in the drama. Although he was hesitant to take up this role since he was not sure whether he would be able to do justice to it or not, he was surprised by the kind of response his performance got. This role must have opened up new horizons for this young actor since the response from the viewers was so welcoming.
Hina Bayat – Talkhiyan
Hina Bayat is usually seen playing graceful characters in dramas owing to her personality and dialogue delivery. She does justice to all the characters she plays but the role she played in Talkhiyan was hands down the most challenging one. Hina Bayat went against her graceful on-screen image and decided to take up a character that was completely opposite of the characters she often plays on the screen. This character had so many layers and these layers wouldn’t have come alive on the screen so beautifully had it not been for Hina Bayat’s uninhibited acting. She owned this role so much so that it was the kind of performance that made the viewers fall in love with a different version of the actor they had seen on screen so many times before.
Imran Ashraf – Ranjha Ranjha Kardi
Imran Ashraf it seems does not have a comfort zone, he is always willing to experiment and most of the time he manages to give every character he plays his best. He is one of those few actors who completely transform themselves for the characters they play and give each one of these characters a tangible identity. Although Imran Ashraf played a challenging role exceptionally well in Alif Allah aur Insaan too the role he played in Ranjha Ranjha Kardi was one-of-a-kind. There are few characters that can make the viewers laugh and cry at the same time, Bhola was one such character which became iconic almost overnight. After Alif Allah aur Insaan the viewers were wondering if Imran Ashraf would ever give another such powerful performance and he left the viewers in awe by giving a performance which was even better. Through this performance, Imran Ashraf proved that no role could be too challenging for him.
Iqra Aziz – Ranjha Ranjha Kardi
Iqra Aziz gave the best performance of her entire career in Ranjha Ranjha Kardi. She got new recognition as a result of this performance. The role she played in the drama was not an easy one since it was a grey character with many flaws. She made people fall in and out of love with Noori. For once, Iqra Aziz’s on-screen persona was nothing like before. She looked like the character she was playing throughout. The fact that she decided to take up a role that did not involve glamour made the viewers take her more seriously than ever. Even though Jhooti was the worst choice made by the actress but her performance in Ranjha Ranjha Kardi left the viewers spell bounded and in awe of her talent.
Mohsin Abbas Haider – Meri Gurya
Mohsin Abbas Haider has always been a character actor but all of his choices have not been the best. He is however one of those few actors who have made some good choices over the years. Meri Gurya was the most challenging project of his acting career. He played the role of a psychopath serial killer, a story unlike others we have seen unfold on screen. His performance was chilling and his portrayal couldn’t have been more impressive. Mohsin Abbas showed his finesse as an actor who was capable of nailing a challenging role through this project.
Sajal Aly – Nanhi
No one can beat Sajal Aly when it comes to playing challenging roles since she started playing such roles when most girls are learning how to perform. She is a natural actor who takes every role she plays like a challenge. The role she played in Nanhi however was extremely challenging for a number of reasons. Since Sajal Aly was so young and a new actress at that time, it was nothing short of a pleasant surprise that she acted so brilliantly. Even though there were so many seasoned actors who were part of this project, Sajal Aly’s performance always stood out. She made sure that her portrayal was so perfect that the viewers never had a problem feeling for or relating to the character she played. Even though Sajal Aly has experimented with so many different roles in her career, Nanhi still is the most challenging role she ever took up. Her performance in this role will never be forgotten.
Sami Khan – Sabz Pari Laal Kabooter
Sami Khan is a phenomenal actor who makes his presence felt in every single drama. The character he played in Sabz Pari Laal Kabooter was different from all the other characters he has ever played on screen. This was perhaps also one of those performances which did not get the appreciation it deserves. He played the role of a transgender in the drama that had to hide his identity. Apart from this identity crisis, this character also had a gentle side to it. Sami Khan brought out the vulnerabilities of his character brilliantly on screen. This was a challenging role that most actors wouldn’t even have taken up but Sami Khan owned it completely and made it unforgettable. He proved that no challenge is too big for an actor who understands his character and is willing to give it his best.
Mohib Mirza – Sabz Pari Laal Kabooter
Mohib Mirza has played many different characters in his vast career. Lately, he has taken up roles that offer neither diversity nor a challenge. In drama serial Sabz Pari Laal Kabooter however he took up a challenging role, especially when considering the kind of roles he is seen doing usually. He played the role of a drug dealer who enticed people into buying drugs. Even though there was nothing likable about this character but Mohib Mirza’s portrayal throughout was picture perfect. He breathed life into his characters and gave the viewers reasons to hate it even more.
Noman Ijaz – Dar Si Jati Hei Sila
Just when the viewers thought they had seen the best of Noman Ijaz, he proved them wrong! His performance in Dar Si Jati Hei Sila showed his range as an actor like never before. Noman Ijaz has played all kinds of different characters in his vast career; negative, positive, and grey. Yet, Joi of Dar Si Jati Hei Sila was something completely brand new. This was not just another negative character but one which stays with you forever. Noman Ijaz looked completely different in this drama and his acting was on point throughout. His fans were more impressed than ever to find out that even at this stage of his career; he was more than willing to experiment. In fact, he seemed to have taken up this as a challenge and proved that he indeed is the most versatile actor in the industry. Through this performance, he proved that there is always something new for an actor who is ready to experiment and take risks.
Ushna Shah – Alif Allah aur Insaan
Ushna Shah’s role in Alif Allah aur Insaan was a turning point in her career. When people watched her in an avatar which was unlike any other she had been seen in before, giving a performance which was mind-blowing, they were truly impressed. It was because of her brilliant performance that her track became the highlight of the drama. This was the first time that Ushna Shah experimented with a challenging role and she made the most of this opportunity. She showed through her performance that she had what it took to give an outstanding performance.
Yumna Zaidi – Pyar Ke Sadqay
Yumna Zaidi has always been a character actor, in fact, only lately has she started taking up some commercial roles otherwise most of the time she is content with playing challenging roles. Her role in Pyar Ke Sadqay was undoubtedly the most challenging role played by her. Her performance was so amazing that people laughed and cried with Mahjabeen. Yumna Zaidi was really excited about this project because she knew that roles such as this one are offered to actors only once in a blue moon. She came up with her own impression of the character and ended up giving the best performance of her career.
Zahid Ahmed – Ishq Zahe Naseeb
Zahid Ahmed is another actor who decided to take up a challenging role at a time when he could have easily played another typical character. He played the role of a man who had a split personality and a feminine side to him. He was highly convincing in both the versions of his character. This role was challenging as well as meaty. It gave Zahid Ahmed the opportunity to show the viewers how capable he was as an actor. Since this character also required makeovers that would have made any actor uncomfortable, it was even more impressive that he owned every aspect of this characterization without any inhibition whatsoever.

Pakistani dramas have always known to strike a chord of the viewers with soul-stirring and emotionally gripping stories. This is the reason why Pakistani dramas have had a massive viewership and the audience find themselves looking forward to one drama after another because they have gotten used to the idea of watching and supporting Pakistani content. Over the last decade, the fans and viewers of Pakistani dramas saw a shift in the content, because of which the focus of the drama makers shifted on the quantity and they compromised heavily on the quality.
Pakistani drama viewers always show their concerns about the kind of content that is being produced. The drama writers in general believe that because they are portraying reality through their stories, they feel they have limited themes to wrap the story around. Initially, it was the heavy inspiration from Indian content that changed the mindset of Pakistani drama writers and then came the idea of projecting the vices that are prevalent in the society, because of which the practice of showing negative and toxic stories became a norm in Pakistani dramas.
Fortunately, the Pakistani drama industry is at that stage where the drama writers have started to experiment and they are trying their best to break free from the monotony of bringing typical and toxic storylines for the viewers. The writers have now started to explore more genres and although they rely heavily upon the dynamics of a family or a household of a character, they are still giving the viewers something refreshing and new every season. At this stage, the drama industry is aware of the kind of impact the TV medium can make, therefore it is nice to see more and more writers as well as actors being mindful of the kind of content they create and their contribution towards the society through their work.
Let’s take a look at those refreshing Pakistani dramas that did not revolve around typical and toxic themes:
Alif
Alif was a one-of-a-kind drama that explored the genre of spirituality. It is a rarity that Pakistani drama viewers come across such a strong and unique storyline that has so much to offer in terms of emotional growth and perspective alteration. Alif’s story was refreshing and it was relatable because every single viewer could find themselves and their struggles while watching the journeys of Qalb e Momin, Husn e Jahan, Taha, Abdul Ala, and Momina.
There was no aspect of spiritual struggles and growth that was left untouched by the writer Umera Ahmed. All of the viewers who watched the drama serial Alif were unanimous of the opinion that we need more such dramas every now and then to help us with soul-searching and path-finding. The story of Alif was refreshing and although it was based on the struggles of all the characters, it imparted some great lessons along the way, because of which it became such a special drama that became etched in the hearts of the viewers.
The performances were given by Hamza Ali Abbasi, Pehlaaj Hussain, Sajal Aly, Manzar Sehbai, Kubra Khan, Saleem Mairaj, and Ahsan Khan made the characters of Alif even more special. They all breathed life into those special characters and the brilliant direction of Haseeb Hassan was visionary because the story like Alif deserved to be told in a certain manner and Haseeb Hassan as a director understood it.
Ehd e Wafa
After decades, Pakistani drama fans and the audience got to watch an Army based drama but as the story progressed, the viewers were in for a treat because they realized that it was not just the story of Saad, it was about the youngsters who are trying to find a way and steer through the course of life in their own capacities. Ehd e Wafa had a brilliant start but as the story progressed, the developments picked up and the writer Mustafa Afridi came up with such inspiring characters and stories that are seldom seen on our TV screens.
Ehd e Wafa in recent times has to be one such unique drama which showed that the young girls wanted to be something and marriage was not their only option or safest bets out of their life issues and problems. They all faced their fair share of ordeals and came out strong. Ehd e Wafa showed everything that young and aged viewers of Pakistani dramas wanted to see. They showed misunderstandings, learning from mistakes, trust, and emotional support of parents, the confidence of the youngsters in themselves, and their struggles to reach their goals for themselves as well as their families. Ehd e Wafa was a complete package that had so much to offer and the addition of the story of an Army officer made things even better.
The cast of Ehd e Wafa also played a huge role in attracting the viewership and creating the hype about the project. The audience were excited to see the group of Ahad Raza Mir, Ahmed Ali Akbar, Wahaj Ali, and Osman Khalid Butt. The young and gorgeous actresses Alizeh Shah, Hajra Yamin played their parts well and Zara Noor Abbas was well-loved for portraying the character of Rani effortlessly. Saife Hassan lead the project skillfully and made Ehd e Wafa what it is.
Ishq Zahe Naseeb
Ishq Zahe Naseeb was probably one of those dramas that explored the domain of mental health and created awareness about it in a unique manner. When the drama began, the drama makers too were unsure of how the audience would perceive the story of Sameer who suffered from multiple personality disorders. It was definitely encouraging for the drama makers because the audience not only showed acceptance but also loved the character of Sameer because they understood his struggles and reasoning.
It was also because the character of Sameer was written with so much clarity by the writer Hashim Nadeem that it made it even easier for the viewers to understand and like Sameer. It also showed how troubled people like Shakira end up leaving a life-long impression on someone. The drama was full of mystery and kept the viewers guessing right till the end. The drama did have a beautiful ending as far as Sameer and Gohar’s relationship was concerned but kept it open in terms of the relationship that Shakira and Sameer shared. It was a unique journey and was appreciated by the viewers a lot, which was enough for the drama makers to know that the audience is ready to accept such content from them and expected more of it.
Although Zahid Ahmed has established himself as one of the strongest and brilliant actors of the Pakistani drama industry, in Ishq Zahe Naseeb he outdid himself and it was a feather in his cap because he got to showcase a whole new skill set as an actor. It was Zahid Ahmed’s flawless performance as Sameer that gave people clarity of what his issues were. Sonya Hussyn, Zarnish Khan, Yumna Zaidi, and Sami Khan were brilliant. The director Farooq Rind really extracted the best acting out of all of them.
Ye Dil Mera
Ye Dil Mera was another drama that revolved around mental health and emotional trauma. The character of Amaanullah was an eye-witness to the brutal killing of his whole family. Therefore he made it the motive of his life to avenge the death of his innocent family members. Amanullah slowly learned that his enemy was an influential man, so he slowly and steadily paved a way into his life. Amanullah carefully planned his revenge and while he wanted Meer Farooq Zaman to confess his crimes, he ended up falling in love with his wife and his enemy’s daughter Ana. Ana on her own too had a horrific incident from her childhood that caused her stress.
In Ye Dil Mera, it was probably for the first time in ages that the writer Farhat Ishtiyaq elaborated on what Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is all about. Both Amaanullah and Ana were faced with it and dealt with it in their own way. Where Amaanullah couldn’t forget that one incident his entire life, Ana was deliberately made to forget about it but it still continued to harm her.
It was unfortunate that the execution of Ye Dil Mera compromised heavily on the impact it otherwise would’ve made because it was such a unique story that dealt with two individuals and had their strong love story too. However, Ahad Raza Mir and Sajal Aly both carried the drama on their shoulders and once again got to show it to the world what they were capable of as actors. Their flawless performances became unforgettable for their fans and also those viewers who watched the drama. Director Ahsan Talish did the best he could but there were a lot of things that were unfavorable, which ended up compromising on the overall quality of the project, but the fact still remains that it was a unique and intriguing storyline.
Pyar Ke Sadqay
Pyar Ke Sadqay was one of the most unique and refreshing storylines the viewers came across this year. The writer Zanjabeel Asim Shah did complete justice to the characters that she penned down because she convincingly showed the struggles and inhibitions faced by people who are unique and special in their own ways. Abdullah was slightly autistic and Mahjabeen was innocent, things became far more interesting when these two came together and then started getting exploited by people around them. In this drama, the writer also touched upon the subject of physical and emotional harassment but in the end, it was nice to see Mansoora taking charge of the situation and compensating for all those years she was an emotionally absent mother.
Director Farooq Rind was the captain of the ship and he took the drama forward with a clear vision. This was probably for the first time the Pakistani drama audience was getting to see characters like Abdullah and Mahjabeen who have certain delays but they are intelligent in their own accord. Pyar Ke Sadqay was a story of two special people who ended up victorious because their innocence, niceness, and faith in themselves became their strongest trait as a team and as a couple.
Yumna Zaidi and Bilal Abbas Khan both have proved themselves over the years but in this drama, they not only wowed their fans but also all those viewers who tuned to Pyar Ke Sadqay. It was purely because of their acting and the grip on these characters that they made this journey worthwhile. Omair Rana, Srha Asghar, Atiqa Odho, and Yashma Gill gave their heart and soul to these characters and contributed fully towards the success of the drama.
Kashf
It won’t be wrong to say that the story and theme of Kashf are purely new and is being seen in Pakistani drama for the very first time. Writer Imran Nazeer is known for always bringing in the quotient of spirituality and etching the story on those lines but this time around, he outdid himself. The story of Kashf is about Kashf’s dreams and then the events which lead to all the materialization of those dreams. How Kashf’s family then starts exploiting her by making her mint money on these dreams and their interpretations.
The fact that the writer has shown how Kashf has stayed true to herself and has maintained her moral compass makes her an inspirational character. As much as she has done to please and financially support her family, she has always stood her ground when she felt her father Imtiyaz was crossing the line. Kashf also threatened a lot of times when she felt this way she would be able to save a family member. Kashf’s struggles and the journey have further humanized her character because now she is at that point where even after deciding for herself, she is being forced to give up and join the Asthana again.
Hira Mani, Junaid Khan, and Waseem Abbas definitely are the stars of the show. They have elevated the level of the drama with their performances. Hira Mani always puts her heart and soul into her characters but in Kashf, she has stunned everyone with her acting skills. This probably has to be the very first drama where Junaid Khan is seen enjoying himself and doing complete justice to the essence of Wajdan’s character. Waseem Abbas has played the role of a mean father to perfection. His antics and selfishness add the comic factor to the drama which has been tackled with finesse by the director Danish Nawaz who knows how comedy works. Kashf is a unique drama and even after so many episodes, it keeps the viewers guessing with what’s going to happen next.
Bikhre Moti
Although drama serial Bikhre Moti’s plot is grim it revolves around the important subject of child labor and how an aunt sacrifices her own life to support her niece and nephews. The character of Ayeza played by Neelam Munir is inspirational because despite knowing what life had in store for her if she married her fiance Ahad, she chooses to get married to her Zulfikar, who was even responsible for the death of Ayeza’s sister. It shows how selfless Ayeza was and how pure her love for her niece and nephews was because she ended up giving up on everything only to protect them as a mother. Her struggles just didn’t end there because she had to then take care of her sister’s children and their needs.
Neelam Munir is one of those actresses who are very selective about the kind of work they do and it is nice to see her being so conscious about her characters because she wants to make an impact and show what a strong and fearless woman can do. Writer Edison Idrees Masih has touched upon a sensitive but very important subject and Shahid Shafaat has directed this drama with a vision.
Sabaat
Sabaat is a unique drama of its nature. It is purely about the mental, emotional, and financial struggles that the younger generation these days is faced with. It has shown the contrast of two different worlds where a family despite having all the luxuries and financial freedom fails to find peace within themselves. Then there is the family of Anaya, who has lived a very humble life with the father fending for basic necessities decently, they have lived through life with nothing but empathy, love, and compassion for each other. It has shown how giving undue freedom and feeding onto the unnecessary demands of children can literally ruin their lives. The father of Miraal is completely responsible for ruining Miraal’s personality and mentality. She has destroyed her own life as well as has walked the extra mile to ruin her brother’s life as well.
The character of Anaya played by Mawra Hocane is nothing short of an inspiration. When the drama began, the viewers couldn’t help but see the similarities between her and Kashaf of Zindagi Gulzar Hai but Mawra Hocane’s convincing performance has helped her carve a niche for Anaya’s character and has forced people to see her differently. Ameer Gillani has been convincing as Hassan and Sarah Khan has convinced the viewers to detest the character of Miraal. The writer Kashir Anwar has in a literal sense shed a light on the struggles that the younger generation stepping into the practical world is faced with. Kashif Anwar has covered their problems and issues on both professional and personal ends. Shehzad Kashmiri has done his best to direct this drama but despite certain issues with the execution, the drama overall has succeeded in keeping the interest of the viewers alive.
Prem Gali
Faiza Iftikhar has come up with a refreshing idea because she has taken up a neighborhood and has interlinked all of their stories. It has been established that as the story will progress, Prem Gali will impart a lot of important messages but under the garb of comedy because this way, things never come across preachy and put a point across in a clear cut manner. Prem Gali is a perfect idea of prime-time entertainment because that is when people usually sit and relax while watching TV. Prem Gali’s comic quotient is what sets it apart because the witty dialogues and fun situations bring a smile to the viewers’ faces.
So far, Saba Hameed, Waseem Abbas, and Farhaan Saeed have stood out the most, in terms of performances as well as characters. The rest of the cast is amazing and each one of their characters has a strong personality. Prem Gali has also given a lot of emotional moments to the viewers where they have shed tears with these characters. This drama has all the factors that draw the attention of the viewers to it. Faiza Iftikhar is known for writing dynamic characters and her situational comedies are always well received. Qasim Ali Mureed really knows how to design the scenes and bring out the best out of all the situations.
Mushk
Imran Ashraf has wowed his fans with his brilliant performances over the years but after Tabeer, this happens to be the second drama written by him. Mushk’s story is refreshing and the characters are dynamic. It is a true love story and has all the characters who have experienced the emotion of love. Imran Ashraf has put his heart and soul into this script, this is why it has succeeded in engaging the audience and is now being appreciated for what is has offered so far. After Udaari, this was Urwa Hocane’s come back on TV, therefore the hopes were high, and fortunately, because of the character that she is getting to play, she has exceeded the expectations.
Mushk’s story does have its fair share of negative characters but even those characters have been written with so much clarity and their screen presence is so strong that one actually wants to understand their reasoning and thought process. Imran Ashraf, Urwa Hocane, Momal Sheikh, Zara Tareen, and child star Sami Khan have elevated the level of this drama. Director Ahsan Talish has directed this drama convincingly and so far, it is one of the best dramas on air right now.
Saraab
Drama serial Saraab explores the life of a girl suffering from schizophrenia. Sonya Hussyn is known for breathing life into her characters but the way she has convincingly portrayed the character of Hoorain has shown that she didn’t just sign this project to showcase her acting skills, but in fact, did her own part of the research and homework to understand how the mind of schizophrenic works. Although the rest of the tracks in Saraab can be termed as typical but they also shed a light on how regular households fail to understand the gravity of the situation and do not really consider the possibility of such behavior related to psychological issues.
Writer Edison Idrees Masih has also done his part of the research and the team of Saraab really lived up to the promise of creating awareness about schizophrenia. Usually, in the past, a lot of dramas have been made that promised to raise awareness but failed to do so because the important issues were trivialized and at times it seemed such subjects were only used to create hype about the project. However, when it comes to Saraab, it is one of those few exceptions where the viewers are pleased with how the entire subject has been explored and dealt with.
This completes the list of all those dramas that have refreshing themes and were not based on toxic and typical storylines such as family politics or simple love triangles with two women fighting over one man or vice versa. These dramas show that the Pakistani drama industry is capable of producing such amazing content. The popularity of these dramas also is evident for the drama makers to understand that Pakistani drama audience is open to new and fresh ideas. At her wedding, Maleka was shown sporting a traditional bridal look and the valima dress was just as pretty as the other two. Kinza Hashmi looked gorgeous in all these looks because she carried them off so well. The make-up artist and the stylist also should be given credit for making sure that Kinza’s make-up and styling were perfect throughout.
Semi-Formal Dresses
The semi-formal look is difficult to pull off because you have to maintain a balance between casual and formal. Like all the other looks and dresses sported by Kinza Hashmi in the drama, the semi-formal dresses were also stunning. She made sure that she did not repeat an outfit or even a color twice. It is a part of an actor’s job to look beautiful and presentable especially in front of the camera. This is the reason, a lot of actresses pay attention to the way they look and how they create a personality of the characters they are getting to play in a drama. A lot of actresses over the years have evolved and learned what looks good on them in terms of styling, hair, and makeup. Some of the actresses do not really feel comfortable in giving up on their made-up looks and continue to stick to certain looks, however, there are quite a few actresses who have over the years started to rely on minimal makeup. This way, these actresses add a lot of dimension to their performances in the dramas because they get to showcase the actual emotional and mental state of the characters that they are playing. The viewers also find such characters and performances realistic and relatable as the distracting makeup is not in the way which might make one wonder how did the character finds the time to get ready and look this good when she is suffering or probably mourning a loss of someone in a drama.
It is a fact that the overall styling and look adds a lot more value to the character and has a great impact on how it is going to be perceived by the viewers. In this day and age, the audience expects the actors to pay more attention to how realistic their characters are going to appear on-screen. This is one factor that deserves special attention because it is now a norm that in every other drama, the female characters are going to face hardships of life, therefore it is important for an actor to make sure that the styling and overall appeal of the character are in line with their story.
Over the years, a lot of actresses have dropped the idea of looking overly glamorized in dramas. They too have come to a realization that it is quite important to portray the true essence of the character and do justice to it. They have spoken repeatedly about how they now understand that always looking overly made up does not help them in any way especially when it comes to the portrayal of the story or character. It definitely goes to show that it requires a lot of confidence to be comfortable in your skin and to be at your absolute natural state in front of the camera.
Here is the list of those Pakistani actresses who rely on minimal makeup in dramas:
Yumna Zaidi
Yumna Zaidi is one of the finest actresses of the Pakistani drama industry. She is the one who puts her heart and soul into every character that she picks up. However, over the years Yumna Zaidi has shown that she is absolutely comfortable in her skin and doesn’t mind wearing next to no makeup in her dramas, especially the scenes which do not require her to look all dolled up. Yumna Zaidi has played a lot of characters and has shown her range as an actor, but the most endearing aspect of her approach towards her characters it the fact that she always believes in giving it a realistic feel and personality to her characters.
Yumna Zaidi always makes sure that her hair is done properly, even it if just a simple straightening or a few loose curls to add volume to her hair but when it comes to makeup, she relies on minimal makeup such as some hint of color on her cheeks and lips, a subtle glow to her face and mascara on the eyes. She tends to play with the colors that she picks up such as warm tones or pinks and shows that by using such fewer makeup products, she can still look absolutely gorgeous.
Neelam Munir Khan
Neelam Munir Khan has been a part of the Pakistani drama industry for a long time but in recent years she rose to fame and has now started taking up projects as a protagonist. Neelam Munir is a fine actor and she too happens to be one of those few actresses who rely on zero to no makeup in dramas, especially in the scenes which do not demand much from her in terms of makeup and overall glamorous looks.
Neelam Munir has set herself a signature makeup look which consists of very few makeup products such as a pop of color on her cheeks, a hint of color on her lips, and a light shade on her eyes alongside mascara. This completes her look and because she is blessed with porcelain skin, she doesn’t feel the need to go heavy-handed on the foundation or base makeup. Neelam Munir definitely believes in keeping things real in order to do justice to the nature of her character.
Mawra Hocane
Mawra Hocane is another one of those few actresses who do not rely on a lot of makeup in dramas. Mawra Hocane has been selective when it comes to her projects but the characters that she picks up, she makes sure to give them a realistic feel and personality. In general, Mawra Hocane is never seen in heavy makeup and that continues to be the case in her dramas as well.
She is seen in the drama serial Sabaat currently and in almost the entire drama, she has worn absolutely no makeup, this is why in the scenes where she is emotional or crying, there are absolutely no traces of makeup product on her face. Mawra Hocane is confident in her skin and this adds an edge to her performance because a lot of young girls watching her on-screen not only find her characters relatable but also find her inspiring. Time and again, Mawra Hocane has shared how she is a big fan of lip and cheek tints, which she often ends up using on her eyelids as well and it is quite evident in Sabaat that this is exactly what she has worn in the drama to portray the character of Anaya realistically.
Hira Mani
Hira Mani is one of those actresses who solely believe in the power of acting and strong performance. This is the reason, in almost all of her dramas, her styling, clothing, hair and makeup are usually on a simpler side. She likes portraying her characters in such a fashion that makes the viewers feel that they are watching the story of a regular girl unfold on their TV screens. Hira Mani definitely is one of those actresses who feel comfortable in their skin, therefore she really doesn’t feel the need to rely on a lot of makeup. In her real-life events as well as professional projects, she keeps her makeup to an absolute minimum. The only time Hira Mani is seen wearing a lot of makeup is when she is hired for any brand campaign or professional photoshoots.
In the drama serial Kashf, Hira Mani has stayed true to the essence of this character and because she is shown to have come from a very humble background, she has opted for such hairstyling as well as makeup that actually shows her dynamics and makes a visual impact. In some of the scenes in the drama serial Kashf where she had to wear makeup like on wedding functions of her cousin or sister, even then she showed that due to Kashf’s simple nature, she didn’t really opt for an elaborate makeup look. In a lot of scenes, it is evident that she has worn hardly a few products too because they were the demand for the camera.
Ushna Shah
Ushna Shah’s styling and makeup have definitely evolved over the years. Ushna Shah has now started relying on very little makeup and because she takes good care of her skin, she understands that she doesn’t need layers of makeup to cover her features. This is why Ushna Shah wears very little makeup which is enough to enhance her beautiful natural features without making her look like a different person.
Ushna Shah definitely is a fan of glowy skin, this is why there is a lot of highlighting done on the high points of her face. It gives her a fresh look and because she has next to no texture on her skin, she carries this look beautifully. Ushna Shah adds a bit of color on her eyelids, some blush on her cheeks, and often goes for glossy lips, which compliment the overall minimal yet glowy face makeup that she opts for.
Saba Qamar
Saba Qamar has definitely made drastic changes in her approach towards makeup. Since she has been a part of the industry for a long time and has worked in a lot of projects, the difference in her makeup and overall styling is evident every step of the way. The fact that she now wears absolutely less makeup and doesn’t even mind giving up on it completely in the scenes where she has to show an emotional ordeal of the character shows how she has matured as an actor.
In one of the interviews, while promoting Cheekh, she made a special mention about how she now chooses to wear lesser makeup because she feels it suits her as well as helps in making her characters look more relatable and appealing to the audience that is watching her dramas.
Sajal Aly
Sajal Aly is one of the most powerful actresses of the Pakistani drama industry. She has been a part of a lot of dramas and has played a variety of characters that have allowed her to showcase her range as an actor. Sajal Aly’s styling when it comes to her characters has evolved a lot and now she is seen giving her characters as realistic a feel and vibe as possible.
Sajal Aly usually gets to portray a certain demographic in a drama, therefore her characters often end up being trendy and chic in terms of styling, this is why it usually is the demand of her character to have a bit of makeup but Sajal Aly makes it obvious that she wears minimal makeup which gives her a little coverage on the face and then the rest of the makeup is more on the matte side. One thing that stays consistent in her makeup routine is the eyeliner which gives her eyes a bit of definition but other than that, it’s more on the natural and minimal side.
Urwa Hocane
Urwa Hocane also has a signature no-makeup look that she sticks to in her real life as well as in her professional projects. Urwa Hocane is blessed with clear skin, therefore she doesn’t feel the need to rely on a lot of makeup for some coverage. Her face makeup is mostly about rosy cheeks, glossy lips, and curled mascara coated lashes. In the drama serial Mushk, Urwa Hocane is seen wearing her signature makeup look which is all about enhancing her natural beauty and adding a bit of color to her lips and cheeks so that she appears more fresh and awake on screen.
Mahira Khan
Although it’s been years that Mahira Khan has not done any project for the TV but a few that she was a part of showed what her approach towards makeup in general was. Mahira Khan has done quite a few projects and right from the beginning, she has stayed true to what she believes the idea of true beauty is. Mahira Khan has never really worn a heavy makeup look in any of her dramas and she absolutely feels comfortable in less makeup.
In some of the scenes where she is not supposed to wear any makeup, she has absolutely no issues because she understands how important it is to portray the characters realistically and not prioritize glamour or makeup over the essence of the scene or the character. Mahira Khan has always relied on enhancing real beauty with minimal usage of makeup. She tends to wear less coverage on her face and adds a bit of mascara and keeps her cheeks and lips looking naturally pink. Mahira Khan was probably one of the first actresses who introduced the no-makeup look and stayed true to it over the years.
This completes the list of all these beautiful actresses who rely on minimal makeup in the dramas. What are your thoughts about their minimal makeup looks? Do you agree that less makeup makes the characters come across a lot more realistic and relatable? Feel free to add in your opinion.
The world is moving away from typical beauty standards which only considers ‘white skin tone’ as the most beautiful skin colour. There was a whole market of whitening products which were doing business on peoples’ insecurities. One of them was ‘Fair and Lovely’ which is a household brand and it has been used by many people to get fairer skin.
After receiving severe backlash, Unilever Pakistan has decided to change its name from ‘Fair and Lovely’ to ‘Glow and Lovely’. The brand’s communication moved away from benefits of fairness, whitening and skin lightening, towards the glow, even tone, skin clarity and radiance which are holistic measures of healthy skin.
The brand is becoming more inclusive and has featured models in hijab, western outfit, eastern outfit, curly hair, and dark skin tone. The diversity can be seen as every kind of woman from every walk of life is part of their campaign. The brand is committed to celebrating all skin tones, which will be reflected in the rebranded product’s communications and messaging.
The brand goes by the dialogues, “Fair & Lovely ka naya naam hai Glow and Lovely! Ab har chehra karey glow #GlowandLovely #AbHarChehraKareyGlow.”
This move by Glow and Lovely has been appreciated by many including actresses Sania Saeed and Nadia Jamil. Both of them have appreciated the brand for becoming more inclusive and bringing diversity.
1/As women we are conditioned 2 idolise a very colonised, stereotyped image of beauty. Being in the business of narrating stories, it’s not always easy, but so essential, 2 ask people 2 challenge these stereotypes. One must not lose hope as we may very well be witnessing a much..
3/3 The name change of #FairAndLovely 2 #GlowAndLovely is 1 of the important steps that needed 2be taken 2 challenge the crushing gora complex we suffer from as a nation. Hoping 2 see more diversity in the rest of the brand’s communication 2.
Imran Asharf and Aeshsun Talish’s masterpiece Mushk is doing well on the screens. It is a story about love, about how can anyone hide or stay away from this notion of love, its smell, and aroma. It features Urwa Hocane, Imran Ashraf, Momal Sheikh, Osama Tahir, Qavi Khan, Shamon Abbasi and many others.
Aehsun Talish talked in detail about his drama serial Mushk in an interview.
He shared bow he got the basic idea of Mushk and said, “This all idea was of Imran Ashraf and then we sat down on story and developed all the characters.”
He revealed the reason of choosing Urwa and Imran in lead roles and said, “The character of Adam was different from previous works which he has done. I chose Urwa and Imran liked it. I suppose her character is the most difficult one. There is not a single protagonist in the drama, every character has its importance and if any character is missing, the story is unfinished.”
He further talked about the genre of ‘Mushk’ and said, “Genres are decided by the audience when they finish watching it. Every time I try to make a different story. Mushk has lots of thrill and love.”
Aehsun Talish shared his experience of working with Urwa and said, “I am working with Urwa after 11-12 years and I am realizing she has got photographic memory. Imran has written difficult dialogues and no actor is allowed to change them so Urwa delivers difficult dialogues without any tongue twister which is brilliant.”
The Turkish historical TV drama Dirilis Ertugrul has been all the rage in Pakistan since the state broadcaster began airing a dubbed version in April. This is not the first Turkish drama to have become popular in Pakistan, but what is different about Ertugrul, often described as the Muslim Game of Thrones is that it’s being promoted by Prime Minister Imran Khan, for reasons thought to be both personal and political.
If there’s one star in Pakistan whose popularity currently rivals that of Mahira Khan, it has to be Esra Bilgic, better known by her screen name Halime Sultan from the Turkish TV series Dirili: Ertugrul. She got a lot of fan following in Pakistan. Today, Esra Bilgic is a part of major ad campaigns in Pakistan.
Recently a Pakistani brand “Dastaan” launched their collection inspired from Halime sultan featuring Hina Afridi.
Pakistani fans are inspired by the exquisite representation of Halime Sultan in Ertugrul. So the Pakistani Brand Dastaan decided to introduce the collection inspied by Halime’s dressing.
