Pakistani Dramas – Too Many Weeping Women, Iniquitous Husbands?

0

There are few Pakistani Dramas that tend to leave an impact and are labelled as a personal favorite of the crowds. A habitual practice brings me to open up YouTube on my phone and occasionally re-watch an already aired drama from some time ago. I’ll admit that one of the main reasons behind it is merely to pass the time and yes, to make up for quite monotonous serials, un-entertaining transmissions and the frightful news that one simply needs to escape from every once in a while.

As my fingers momentarily pause over the virtual keyboard and my mind would search for dramas that I liked, I flashed to some 4-6 years back, when there was a time that my entire nuclear family would sit down to watch television together.

It isn’t something that I would regard as unusual presently, but it is something that I sorely miss. Amidst the hassle of modifications and transfiguration of our lifestyle, women usually flop over the lounge couch to watch their dramas at night, whereas men would take refuge in watching either the news or a movie on another television set. And they can’t be blamed for doing so. How much more can a man enjoy himself by viewing the repeated story-line in ever screen play, where he is portrayed as a evil husband who finds no other pleasure than to physically abuse his wife? Won’t children find it tiresome to see the same troubled woman crying her eyes out and gaining the undeserved sympathy of the viewers by playing the weakling she shouldn’t be? Also, will this not influence their physical and mental development as well as the insight of their surroundings?

Take a look back at Yeh Shaadi Nahi Hosakti aired on ARY in 2013 or even the memorable wedding series of GeoTV starting from Azhar Ki Ayegi Baraat in 2011. These dramas comprised of characters that had small ordinary roles, yet they were acted so naturally that they became an instant success. The story-lines were centered on marrying off a couple, with the hardships that usually came with being in a relationship, the bride and groom’s family differences as well as the amusement brought along with the circle of friends being the reception groups for both parties; often seemingly to be stretched and elongated. However, this careless aspect was extremely minor in comparison to the sound ones and could be ignored, so that the overall impact was in regardless, quite compelling.

Most importantly, these dramas were such that the entire family would be equally entertained as an individual. There were no negative roles, only sides which, logically, every family member tends to have and contributes to the special bond that a family, especially a joint one, possesses. For example, in Yeh Shaadi Nahi Hosakti, the bride’s aunt Dure, was adamant on the wedding being called off because of her dislike for the groom’s family status, but she wasn’t vilanious all the way through.

Such dramas are relatable and adept; for every household has, in one way or another, been a part of these situations realistically such as Sila’s parents getting separated, Dolly’s father getting married again, the unhappy hitches of being in marriage etc.

Moreover, these plays do not tend to diverge people in accordance with their differences and conceive ratings by tearing families apart with every emotional outburst and temperamental violence, but focuses on how these distinctions can be put aside so as to converge people even closer than before. It might seem like creating a fictional bubble, but in truth, we have made the idea of families sticking up for each other as an impossible task by being suspicious of each other’s motives.

The aforementioned dramas on the other hand, put the famous Anna Karenina principle : Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way, into play as well. In order for a family to be happy, it must be ready to accept one’s dissimilarities and unhappiness.

Drama, suspense, comedy (as well as folk music and dance) are amalgamated into one and these variations in the script prevented the viewers from getting bored with respect to repetition.

As mentioned previously, these on-screen plays added the element of the diverse cultures and families, (having polar languages, customs, rituals and traditions)  that dwell within different cities and provincial states of Pakistan which was always hilarious as well as insightful, for in spite of the differences that may be present, it puts an emphasis on unification all the same.

In addition to this, the dramas tackle societal and communal issues with the same virtuosity and also tend to portray the message of the generation gap that exists, and is perhaps larger than ever, among our age groups so as to make both adults and youngsters comprehend the process of how to handle it strategically and understand each another better.

All in all, it is a pity that such dramas aren’t produced anymore, but we have our hopes up into the making of another one just the same. What are your thoughts regarding these two dramas? Let us know with your comments!

Pakistani drama industry in danger !

0

Nowadays Pakistani media industry is criticizing the airing of dubbed soaps on the local TV channels. It claims that our local drama industry will be destroyed if these foreign plays will replace the domestically produced dramas and the matter is not taken care of. Specially they will occupy the prime-time hours which have a significant history of showing us some of the finest Pakistani dramas that gained popularity not only in Pakistan but abroad as well.

Apart from the debate about the quality of our dramas, we should have a patriotic feeling about our TV dramas. At least it is something of our own, of our own country. It belongs to us.

Pakistani drama industry has a dignified and glorious past of producing the unsurpassed dramas like ‘Dhoop Kinaray’, ‘Tanhaiyaan’, ‘Chand Girhan’, ‘Dhuan’, ‘Alpha-Bravo-Charlie’ and the list goes on. These plays were famous for creating a pin-drop silence on the streets. Even in the recent past we saw some noticeable plays like ‘Manay Na Ye Dil’, ‘Qaid-e-Tanhai’, ‘Meri Zaat Zarra-e-Benishan’ etc. The DVDs of the aforementioned and many other plays were interestingly seen overseas not only by Pakistani expatriate community but other nationalities also. Pakistani dramas are also shown in the acting schools of the neighboring country as inspiration.

There was a period when an attempt was made by the Indian TV channels to invade this industry through their low-quality soaps that had weak plots and senseless stories. Those dramas left negative impact on our society such as hatred, jealousy, greed and revenge. These behaviors entered our houses and females of our country were largely affected. These substandard plays also influenced the fashion sense of our people. Honestly, I never saw a man wearing a shocking pink embroidered suit before.

Then enters the dubbed plays. Urdu1 ventured into dubbed programming with a Turkish soap ‘Ishq e Mamnu’. Pakistanis loved the Urdu-speaking ladies of the Bosphorus and the play went viral as far as the ratings are concerned. For channels, this is a jackpot. With minimal production cost, just buy foreign content, dub it in Urdu and you are good to go.

I’ve read some arguments on the web that dubbed programming is a common feature of primetime across the world. I say, this might be a trend worldwide but the countries where this practice is followed might not have their own quality content. Pakistan is a different case.

Pakistan has a legacy of producing good quality dramas. From writers to actors, from producers to directors, Pakistan has a vast variety of talent that is increasing day by day. We don’t need any foreign content to amuse our television viewers. I agree that there is some shortcomings in our dramas but those deficiencies could be fixed.

I’m not against the screening of foreign content on our local TV channels. People like change and I agree with that. But, it should be controlled and limited. The prime time should be reserved for the original Pakistani dramas only. We should also keep in mind that local production of the drama is also connected to our economy. A huge number of people are associated with this industry. Broadcast of too much foreign content on TV channels will ruin the careers of people (including many labor and low category technical staff) associated with the drama industry. Let us save our drama industry from foreign influence before it is too late.

Pakistani Drama Hawas Aur Mohabbat Gets Backlash For Bold Content

Bold Content of Hawas Aur Mohabbat- Pakistani dramas are loved for their family oriented content and stories that are closer to a common man’s life. They are also sensitively handled and too much intimacy and bold content is never encouraged by viewers. The family drama is mellowed out even if themes are strong like rape and abuse. But a few times, dramas can cross a few lines and that does not sit well with the Pakistani audience.

Pakistani Drama Hawas Aur Mohabbat Gets Backlash For Bold Content

A Pakistani show titled Hawas Aur Mohabbat premiered on Grey Films on YouTube. It is a web-series and some clips from the show are now going viral on social media. The plot shows a prostitute and a simple man played by Saleem Mairaj who encounters her. The language of the show is what has the netizens talking.

Pakistani Drama Bad Boys Who Stole The Show

Pakistani drama is one medium that has taken over the country’s entertainment scene. We excel in this genre, and now the shows are finding an international audience. The stories, therefore, have started improving slightly, and more layers are being added to the characters, which had unfortunately become very one-dimensional in the recent past. Some negative characters are getting nuances that are making them lovable. This creates a lot of debate amongst viewers, but some drama bad boys have been winning hearts.

There have been scripts lately where the bad guys, despite having hundreds of vices, were able to win the audience far more than the heroes. The top-notch performances by the actors in these roles and the writing, which provided the necessary ammunition to these bad guys, made them into fan favourites.

Here is a list of Pakistani dramas’ bad boys who won the audience more than the heroes of the show:

Ammar Bakhtiyar From Qarz e Jaan

Pakistani Drama Bad Boys Who Won The Audience More Than Heroes

Qarz e Jaan was a Pakistani drama with a unique story and spoke about problems regarding parenting, elite crimes, and problems faced by widows and orphans in our society. Ammar Bakhtiyar, played by Nameer Kha,n was the biggest driver in this story. Ammar is a rapist and a murderer, a character who is a representation of Zahir Jaffar and Shahrukh Jatois of our society. But the way Nameer Khan played the character and how his character arc was written gave him a human angle. In the end, however much may we criticize the glorification, Ammar Bakhtiyar was far more loved by the audience than Barrister Burhan.

Barlas Khan From Khaie

Pakistani Drama Bad Boys Who Won The Audience More Than Heroes

Khaie was a game changer for Pakistani drama industry. A show based on revenge and all the characters with grey shades was a treat for the audience. Barlas Khan played by Shuja Asad was one character in the show that remained a topic of discussion throughout. The drama proved to become a breakout project for the actor Shuja Asad. Barlas Khan is another Pakistani drama bad boy who got more praises than positive characters. Fans were crying for him when he dies despite him being a murderer.

Shehroz Ali Nawaz In Aye Ishq e Junoon

Pakistani Drama Bad Boys Who Won The Audience More Than Heroes

Aye Ishq e Junoon was Pakistani drama’s foray into romance-thrillers. The show had Sheheryar Munawar in the lead and he did a fabulous job as Rahim. Fans loved him but the show stealer in the end was Shuja Asad as Shehroz Ali Nawaz. He was a bad boy, a spoiled brat who was protected by his mother. The way he performed scenes with actors like Mehmood Aslam was phenomenal and Aye Ishq e Junoon fans felt bad for Shehroz when he was shot. This is another case of the bad guy winning over the audience and invoking sympathy in their hearts.

Wajeeh Taseer In Cheekh

Pakistani Drama Bad Boys Who Won The Audience More Than Heroes

Cheekh was a Pakistani drama that ended up becoming a drag in the end. But it is also known for very strong performances. Bilal Abbas Khan played a harasser and murderer in the drama. Wajeeh Taseer was a menace through and through, but he became Pakistan’s most loved bad boy. The character had a bad ending and people were crying for him. This is one more example of how a great performance led to people loving a very negative character.

Mir Hadi From Khaani

Pakistani Drama Bad Boys Who Won The Audience More Than Heroes

Feroze Khan is now known as one of the biggest names in the Pakistani drama industry. Khaani was the project that made him into a star that he is today. The angry young man and rebel image started from this show. Khaani was loosely based on the infamous Shahzeb murder case while Mir Hadi played by Feroze Khan represented the character of Shah Rukh Jatoi. Viewers had a lot of qulams about how a bad guy was glorified in this drama but Mir Hadi undoubtedly became a much-loved bad boy.

Miral In Jhok Sarkar

Pakistani Drama Bad Boys Who Won The Audience More Than Heroes

Usman Javed is a relatively new actor who played the role of menacing Miral in Jhok Sarkar. He recently won hearts with another strong performance in Tan Man Neelo Neel. Jhok Sarkar was the comeback drama for Asif Raza Mir who played Peeral while Farhan saeed was the protagonist. Farhan looked the part and performed well but Usman Javed as Miral won hearts. The way he walked, laughed and lived that character was a treat for viewers. He was a killer but fans could not stop praising his character. He ended up overshadowing industry giants like Asif Raza Mir and Farhan Saeed.

Shamsher In Kaisi Teri Khudgarzi

Pakistani Drama Bad Boys Who Won The Audience More Than Heroes

Danish Taimoor played Shamsher in Kaisi Ter Khudgarzi. Shamsher was not a nice and positive character. He kidnapped a woman and did everything in his power to destroy her family. The show ended with his death but it came after glorifying his character as much as the script allowed. The drama started a conversation around Stockholm Syndrome as the leading lady ends up not just falling in love with Shamsher but also keeps remembering him after his death. This bad boy got criticism on one end for a problematic storyline but on the other hand, he ruled the hearts of millions.

Sherry From Jaisay Aapki Marzi

Pakistani Drama Bad Boys Who Won The Audience More Than Heroes

Mikaal Zulfiqar played the infamous Sherry in Jaisay Aapki Marz. This drama revolved around gaslighting and emotional abuse in a marriage. The drama successfully tackled both the topics and Durefishan Saleem showed her prowess as an actress. Mikaal Zulfiqar, though, was the real winner of this drama. He performed the character so naturally that the audience could not stop appreciating him. This Pakistani drama was a step in the right direction and Mikaal Zulfiqar won hearts as Sherry.

Tabrez In Jaan e Jahan

Pakistani Drama Bad Boys Who Won The Audience More Than Heroes

Haris Waheed simply nailed it as Tabrez Shah. The actor played an antagonist in a Pakistani drama which marked the comeback of Hamza Ali Abbasi on television and opposite none other than Ayeza Khan. A sweet love story, a morally right hero and yet the audience fell in love with Tabrez. The antagonist dies in the end but the audience still loved him more than any other character in the show.

Saleem Ahmed In Razia

Pakistani Drama Bad Boys Who Won The Audience More Than Heroes

Razia was a Pakistani drama that was not only entertaining but also hard-hitting and necessary. Mohib Mirza played the role of the misogynistic father, Saleem Ahmed, who disregards his daughter’s rights and focuses solely on his son. Despite the character’s negativity, viewers never found him boring; in fact, many wanted to see more of his scenes due to his compelling presence on screen. As a real-life female ally, Mohib Mirza portrayed this character, so different from his true personality, with remarkable skill.

These are the charming villains of Pakistani dramas who have captured audiences’ hearts. While there is a valid debate about whether these characters should be admired and how they are portrayed, it is important to recognize that people are inherently drawn to action. In many cases, the bad guy tends to overshadow the heroic character when it comes to thrilling moments!

Pakistani Divas Guide To Wear Bold Outfits

Western clothes even the casual summer dresses of short length are not welcomed by Pakistanis due to cultural differences. We have our own culture, traditions, religious beliefs and way of conducting ourselves in the society. The same standards do apply to our divas and Pakistani actresses for the most part do not put up pictures showing their skin even from their private trips and also avoid wearing bold outfits on-screen. But for the sake of fashion and their personal style, many of our divas have found a way to wear these cute and trendy clothes and it is for sure a guide to wear otherwise bold outfits in Pakistani society.

1. Ayeza Khan:

Ayeza Khan is super talented and she is a fashionista with social media game on point. These things combined make her the most followed Pakistani celebrity on Instagram. Ayeza loves to wear summer dresses for sure but another thing she loves are her opaque black stockings. Ayeza always wears modest outfits and she has the fashion sense to make every dress she wears according to her own standard.

Pakistani Directors We Should Be Proud Of

0

While the writers and actors in particular get more than enough attention and appreciation from the viewers, the directors most often do not get the credit they truly deserve. No matter how good the script of a play is if the director does not put his best into showing it on screen in a good way then the script may not have any impact on the viewers. On the other hand, a good director can even change an average script into something outstanding by extracting the best performances from the actors and by making the screenplay more enticing. It is totally up to the director how he visually puts the material in the script on screen.

Pakistani dramas could never have gotten as far as they have if it wasn’t for some very dedicated directors who are always giving us their best. here is a list of directors who have recently made a very good name for themselves in the drama industry.

Haissam Hussain

Anyone who watches Pakistani dramas would be well acquainted with this gifted director. He works very hard on all his projects and is one of those directors who can do miracles. Haissam Hussain was the director of Dastan, Akbari Asghari, Durr-e-Shehwar, Aik Nayee Cinderella and many others. He is also the one who will be directing the upcoming serial Bin Royee Ansoo.

haissam

Haissam Hussain has rose to fame in a very sort span of time because of the quality of his work.

haisam 2

Mehreen Jabbar

Mehreen Jabbar is very talented, she has been in the directing business for quite some time now. Everything that she has done till now goes to prove that she is nothing short of an asset for our industry. Mehreen Jabbar directed the old long play starring Khalida Riyasat Ab Tum Ja Sakte Ho. She has also directed notable plays like Malal, Vasl, Daam, Mata-e-Jaan Hai Tu, Coke Kahani, Rehaii and the film Ramchand Pakistani. Mehreen Jabbar adds the right kind of emotions to all of her plays. She pays attention to detail and aims for perfection.

People like Mehreen Jabbar are a source of pride for our industry.

Nadeem Siddiqui

Nadeem Siddiqui has directed the following plays, Mere Khawab Reza Reza, Mein Gunehgar Nahi, Mann Ke Moti, Mere Harjayee, Maya, My Dear Sautan, Aks and many others. Nadeem Siddiqui has done a lot of quality work in a very short period of time which goes to show how dedicated he is to his work. His latest play Ranjish Hi Sahi is being highly appreciated because of the acting and direction.

nadeen s 2

Do you remember the adorable child star who played Affan in drama serial Dil-e-Muzter? He is Nadeem Siddiqui’s son, talent most surely runs in the family.

nadeem s 3

Sarmad Khoosat

This list would be incomplete without adding the name of Sarmad Khoosat, the reason being that I have always felt that Sarmad is a true artist who believes in giving out quality work without worrying about commercialism. Although Sarmad had been directing for years before the he directed the play Pani Jaisa Pyar but that is the play that made people stand up and take notice. Sarmad introduced the concept of sitcoms with performances on songs through his sitcom Shahshlik. He gave his fans hits like Hamsafar and Shehr-e-Zaat and directed some other notable plays like Mera Yakeen and Daagh.

skhamsafar1

Sarmad Khoosat’s journey has just started, his talent and hard work is bound to take him a long way.

Pakistani Designer Accused Of Physically Abusing A Client

0

Tabassum Mughal is a known Pakistani designers who has been invited as a guest in many Morning Shows too. Recently one of her clients who wasn’t a very rich woman but wanted a designer dress for her daughter has brought to light the real face of the designer who appears to be very nice on television. The client has spread the incident via facebook and twitter. She says that when she went to the designer to get her daughter’s clothes, they were not ready. She protested a little and ask the designer to finish the work on time. The designer did not like this and she asked her general manager and few more people there to drag the woman out of the place.

Untitled

The general manager and other men beat the woman up with chairs, kicked her, pulled her hair and dragged her out of the place. The exact ‘orders’ of the designer were “Maaro iss Rickshaw wali aurat ko” because the client had come on a rickshaw. She also said that people who travel in rickshaws don’t deserve to be her clients.

This is how the whole incident was narrated by someone who is related to the victim:

She also posted pictures of the injury:

They were not beaten but they were verbally abused. People are gathering up in Karachi Clifton area tomorrow to protest against the designer so that she can be brought to justice.

A page dedicated to the incident has been created on facebook but the admin says that he/she is getting threats from “friends” of Tabbasum Mughal.

Pakistani Couples With a Big Age Gap

They say when you fall for someone than age becomes just a number. When it comes to a relationship mutual understanding and compatibility to the partner is of far more importance than the age difference between them. The compassion the couple has for each other decides the fate of the relationship instead of how much older one is than the other.

Pakistani Comedy: From Hit to Shambles!

0

The golden times of PTV are still remembered by all Pakistanis. Our content was seen, appreciated and loved not only by Pakistanis but all over the world. Even today the best of our actors are seen quoting how their skills were polished and how much they learned during the PTV era. We excelled in all forms of entertainment; be it drama, tragedy, action or COMEDY. Comedy is a genre loved by all. In today’s times when there is extremism and gloominess everywhere comedy can prove to be an even greater escape from all the sadness and an opportunity to feel fresh.

Pakistanis have known the gist of comedy from very start. PTV has produced some evergreen comedies that will forever be loved. Some examples are Alif Noon, Sona Chandi and Andhera Ujala. These shows were not mere comedies with cheap material but had impressive scripts and lessons for the masses. They made the actors in them stars and they are still loved by the masses. Like who can forget Irfan Khoosat’s ‘Oye Allah dittay” from Andhera Ujala . The show was not a mere comedy. It showed what our police go through and gave us an insight on the wrong doings occurring in our society. It was beautiful, emotional and hilarious. It was comedy with a message.

Pakistani Comedy: From Hit to Shambles!

Sona Chandi made people realize everyday problems and showcased husband wife relationship beautifully. Alif Noon had a brand of its own. The show made Actor Rafi Khawar popularly known as Nanha a film star and he will always be remembered as one of the best comedians of the Pakistani entertainment industry. Talking about films Munawar Zareef’s style of comedy and even his movies were copied across the border and were huge successes making people laugh left and right.

Pakistani Comedy: From Hit to Shambles!Pakistani Comedy: From Hit to Shambles!Pakistani Comedy: From Hit to Shambles!

But after all this glory like every other entertainment sphere comedy also fell into a dump and unfortunately we still have not discovered back our comedy streak and all we are left with are shows like Halka na lo, Dugdugi, Bulbulay and Qudusi sahab ki bewa. Let me sum up what is wrong with these shows:

The Script:

First and foremost thing makers of these shows need to understand a show might be comedy but it NEEDS A SCRIPT. It is not tolerable for audiences to see people running around here and there with no story at all. Best example of this are shows starring Barkat and Uzmi. People are laughing, running and looking stupid for no reason at all and they call it a comedy show. The makers desperately need to take some inspiration from the old shows and realize a script is necessary to run a show.

Pakistani Comedy: From Hit to Shambles!

Unnecessary Vulgarity:

Our country has progressed a lot and we are far more modern from older times. From celebrity dresses to themes of our dramas and films everything has moved ahead but still many things which were inappropriate are still inappropriate and will remain as such. Does anyone remember when Momo was pregnant with Sona and Khoobsurat with Chandi in Bulbulay. The show is loved by people and I know babies are born every day and it is a natural process but believe me it is not a very beautiful sight when your 6 year old comes running to tell you “Woh Momo Maa banne wali hai na.” Imagine the horror as the biggest audiences of this show are children. Talking about films the only comedy left there is “Ooper dekhoonga to neechay se chirya ura do ge” from Wrong No.; let me remind you a small boy is saying this to “Ye aik banday ka kaam nahin hai” of Mehrunisa V Lub U and showing gayism in JPNA. The question to the makers is Do they really think this is comedy?

Pakistani Comedy: From Hit to Shambles!Pakistani Comedy: From Hit to Shambles!

Fixed Actors:

Fixed actors are seen in sitcoms and comedy shows. Gone are the days of Family Front and Shashlik when actors like Waseem Abbas, Saba Hameed and Nadia Afghan used to do comedies. Only some fixed actors are seen doing comedy shows these days like Nabeel, Barkat, Uzmi, Mahmood Sahab and some more. The dilemma of fixed casting has made comedy confined to certain people and shows limiting the impact this genre can otherwise have.

Pakistani Comedy: From Hit to Shambles!

So from glory of Alif Noon to unnecessary laughing of Mr. Shamim and Halka na lo our comedy has really gone from best to worst. We definitely need a lot of improvement and seeing the progress of the industry one should remain hopeful that one day the comedy will rise from sastay jokes and dheeli hassi to actual punch lines and comic scripts. But we will have to suffer till the day comes!
