Lately, he appeared in Qasim Sheikh’s popular YouTube show, “Woh Wala Show”, where he talked about his ex wife Humaima Malick in a segment where he had to give his opinions or advices to the ace Pakistani celebrities.
Talking about Humaima Malick, he said, “Humaima, Humaima is ambitious, very ambitious, I will give her advice to focus on her work”
Talking further about her sickness, he said, “I think she got sick in Turkey, she got an operation of her appendix there, I hope and pray she gets well”.
There was a time when Pakistani dramas were loved by the viewers for being short and to the point. Most dramas ended at 13 weeks when the viewers were still interested in the plot. The basic purpose of these dramas was to tell a certain story, everything else was secondary. The scenes used to be concise and each episode added something substantial to the story. Things have changed considerably in that department over the years.
The producers and television channels came to the conclusion that stretching these dramas to 20 plus weeks would earn them more revenue with the same investment which they were putting into the dramas before! This was a great “business strategy” but it proved to be nothing short of torture for the viewers who were completely engrossed in these dramas for weeks but then suddenly the main focus shifted from the plot to add more episodes!! In the past few years, we have observed that most writers can stretch a story only to a certain point. Therefore, when they are expected to write additional episodes the story and the quality of these dramas go downhill considerably. The flow that is there in the initial episodes is always lacking from the latter episodes which are most often forced.
Most often, the writers pen down only a certain number of episodes but when a drama is really popular among the masses, the production houses use certain tactics to add more episodes to the drama. There are also times when writers are asked to add more scenes and scenarios in the script when a drama is getting enough ratings. Needless to say, this trend has actually worked for the producers and the channel owners. Once the viewers are invested in a story, they continue watching it till the end even when they feel that a drama is being unnecessarily dragged.
Here are some of the most common tactics used by channels and producers to prolong dramas:
Adding Too Many Flashbacks
This has to be the number 1 tactic used by the channels to add more episodes when there isn’t enough content in the script to add new scenes. Also, obviously, when the recording has already been wrapped up, there is no way to record more scenes; channels tend to show flashback scenes in every episode. These scenes easily serve as fillers and as a consequence of that with a little editing, the channels manage to add more episodes. Everyone will agree that when producers use this tactic, continuing to watch a drama becomes burdensome. Even the most recent scenes are shown as flashbacks which make every episode highly repetitive. That is why the viewers rightly complain about the slow pace of the dramas which they felt were well-paced and put together in the initial few weeks.
Overuse of OST
Nowadays, OSTs are used to grab the attention of the viewers before a drama goes on air. There is a huge competition among the production houses to bag the best singers and composers in order to make sure that these OSTs make waves. When these producers and channels want to stretch a drama, this OST is exploited to the maximum! There is a general trend of playing the OST repeatedly while one of the characters either goes for a never-ending stroll or is shown suffering! Even the best OSTs have been criticized by the viewers when they are overused in dramas to lengthen the duration of scenes. It is now really easy for the viewers to pick up when an OST is used effectively and when it is simply forced in the drama in order to kill time. Sometimes, the viewers end up hearing more of the OST in a certain episode than the dialogues! This is another convenient but extremely annoying way of prolonging the number of episodes.
Making The Villain Invincible
There are certain producers and channels that even get some episodes written by the writer in order to stretch the drama without the use of flashbacks and OSTs. In such a scenario we have often seen that making the villain, who is most often the main center of attraction, invincible is the most used tactic to add more episodes and also an attempt to keep the viewers’ interest intact. In doing so, many writers ended up giving these villains so much power that the negativity started getting to the viewers.
Increasing Helplessness of The Victim
Making the villain stronger and increasing the victim’s (who would also be the main protagonist) helplessness has definitely been one of the favorite tactics used by the producers, channels, and writers! Since the viewers are rooting for the victim and are waiting for an end to the victim’s conflict, they are more likely to tune into the drama every week in anticipation. Like all the other tactics used by the channels, this one also garners criticism because viewers get tired of watching the victims suffer especially when this suffering is often taken overboard!
Adding New Side Tracks
Lately, we have seen quite a few dramas in which new tracks were added at a time when most people were waiting for a story to conclude. Adding such tracks and new conflicts is another way used by producers to justify the stretching. It is however quite often that these tracks are most often added afterward and do not quite fit into the story. Obviously, the writers who are done with a certain script must find it hard to add new tracks, and therefore the end product is never up to the mark.
There are only a handful of Pakistani dramas nowadays which are not dragged. It is always good to watch such dramas right till the end but there have been so many good dramas in the recent past which lost their spark altogether because of these dragging tactics. Do you agree that channels and producers use these tactics to stretch dramas needlessly? Would you like to see Pakistani dramas ending sooner? Which tactic used by the channels do you find most annoying? Share your views.

Coke Studio season 14 opened with a huge hit Tu Jhoom, written by Adnan Dhool, produced by Xulfi and Abdullah Siddiqui and sung by legends Abida Parveen and Naseebo Lal. The song touched the hearts of millions all over the world.
However, it also got into a huge controversy when Nirmala Maghani, an upcoming singer from Umerkot accused Xulfi of stealing the melody. Nirmala alleged that she sent her melody to Xulfi in hopes of getting featured in the Coke Studio. She did not hear back from him but was in for a surprise when Tu Jhoom released. Here is the melody by Nirmala Maghani:
Yousaf Salahuddin also came forward in favour of Nirmala and said that he has heard the melody already and she is the original creator. He also said that he will help her take a legal route:
Xulfi has now come forward with his own take on the situation as well as proof that he had been working on the melody in May 2021 while Nirmala sent her melody in late June. He did not download the melody either and it can also be proved. This is what Xulfi had to say about the whole situation:
“As I shared with you earlier, I produce and collaborate in the spirit of inclusivity and my work with Coke Studio holds the same philosophy. My work is not borrowed or without credit, given that what I share with the world is work that relies on the very essence of partnership and collaboration. I hope this to be evident in my entire body of work produced in my career.
When we set out to make this season, our goal was to make Pakistani music heard worldwide. Our aim was to present our music, our young talent and our icons in a way that shows the world what we are capable of. What we stand for as a nation. Our aim was to create a cultural moment of glory for Pakistan. Coke Studio is Pakistan’s biggest cultural export and connector of hearts and souls; it has consistently brought people together for art, progression and positivity. And that power is very dear to me and one that I’ve absorbed heavily this season. I don’t take the fabric of Coke Studio lightly but rather wear it as a cloak of responsibility and pride.
And indeed, I look forward to continue working with our brilliant artists, from all over the country; for they truly are the present and future of Pakistani music!
The CS14 journey for you has just started. We hope to take you along in these moments of love and discovery and we hope you fall in love with these artists and these moments.
Love,
Xulfi
Xulfi has also shared a screen recording of his Whatsapp where he is seen discussing Tu Jhoom with co-producer Abdullah Siddiqui in May way before Nirmala sent her melody:

In start, she moisturized the face of model from clinic’s cream because the trending base gives best blending results on a moisturized skin. She then applied contour on nose, cheeks, lips, chin and fore head, after contour she poured foundation around the face. She also dripped tint on the cheeks of model and left it for drying. After that she blended the forehead from upwards and also beautifully blended make up in the end she blended up tint. She, then, used lose powder to give her final touches. The actress says that this base is in trending and she learned it from Dubai. Nida Yasir also said that now a days actresses use this style of applying base, it looks natural n glowy.
Pakistani drama industry is flourishing with every passing year. Unlike a few years back, the leading actors, in particular, have so many novel scripts to choose from. Yet, there are still some actors who settle for the most mediocre scripts and refuse to experiment. Even though these actors are talented as well as popular, they choose to be part of dramas that are most often either clichéd or simply meaningless. Their fans tune into the dramas they star in because their fan following is massive but most often they are left highly disappointed. The fact that these stars are still followed and loved by many despite the choices made by them in the recent past, goes to show their star power. Some of them have been part of quality dramas in the past but lately, they are either too comfortable playing similar roles or perhaps look for monetary incentives instead of quality while choosing their projects. It is especially disappointing watching them star in dramas that are not up to the mark because there are so many other roles in quality dramas that could have been perfect for them. We would love to see these actors choose better projects which give them a chance to step out of their comfort zone.
Here is a list of those Pakistani actors who should choose better projects:
Imran Abbas
Imran Abbas has been an integral part of the Pakistani drama industry for the longest time. He has given some remarkable performances in different dramas. He has definitely proven his mettle as a serious actor in the past but lately, it appears as if he does not take his acting career too seriously. He has been playing similar roles in dramas repeatedly. Had these roles been layered and meaty, we would have been more than happy but that has not been the case. Imran Abbas picks up the most undesirable roles in dramas that are solely meant to be commercial hits. His roles in dramas such as Thora Sa Haq and Amanat were literally the same! Jo Tu Chahay was yet another drama that Imran Abbas termed as a mistake himself. Noor-ul-Ain and Dar Khuda Se were equally unimpressive. It is sad watching a man with so much talent, wasting himself working in such dramas. We really hope that this year Imran Abbas will make a conscious effort to break free from the bad choices he has made since 2018 in particular. Surely, he does not need to compromise on quality since he can easily stay relevant even if he is seen on screen only occasionally.
Feroze Khan
Feroze Khan is one of those few Pakistani actors who made a big name for themselves in the shortest possible time. Even though he has a handful of dramas to his credit, his name alone guarantees ratings. This is the reason why it is even more disappointing that he has been choosing to play roles that fit the Mir Hadi persona time and again. In between, he tried to experiment only once. Other than that, in every other drama, he plays the problematic lover. There are so many viewers who watch his dramas solely because of him. Feroze Khan can make you love or hate his characters which is why he should be playing layered roles or at least roles that break the monotony. We have no idea what is Feroze Khan’s criteria for choosing the projects he wants to work in but so far he has not chosen to play a lot of roles that could become memorable in the true sense of the word. Interestingly enough, he is another actor who stars in dramas that are criticized but are also the most-watched. We would love to watch Feroze Khan play a layered role that is unlike any other he has done so far.
Alizeh Shah
Alizeh Shah is a relatively new actress but there’s no denying the fact that she is one of the most sought-after actresses in the industry. In her entire career, Alizeh Shah has only once been part of a project which could be termed as quality entertainment which was Ehd-e-Wafa. Other than that, she is most often used as a way to add to the visual appeal of dramas. Her characters most often have absolutely nothing to offer. She manages to bag roles which are leading roles but they don’t have any screen presence. Jo Tu Chahay, Mera Dil Mera Dushman, and now Bebasi are examples of some of the worst projects chosen by the actress. If she continues choosing such roles then there is little chance that she will be recognized as a serious actress. Alizeh Shah also has a massive fan following which will definitely increase if she starts choosing to be a part of better projects. This makes us wonder why she was not given a role in Sinf-e-Aahan, do the producers want her to be a visual treat for the viewers alone. The way her ‘beauty’ is being used as the center of attention in Bebasi, certainly suggests that might be the case!
Mikaal Zulfiqar
Mikaal Zulfiqar started his showbiz career when he was really young. He is blessed with good looks and when he is part of a project which is well written, he manages to impress as well. Durr-e-Shehwar, Diyar-e-Dil, and Mein Sitara are some dramas in which he played roles that offered variety and were well written. However, if we take a look at the kind of roles Mikaal has been doing lately, it is apparent that he is not only being stereotyped but he has comfortably accepted to play roles that have no room for performance. Just like Imran Abbas, his roles lack appeal altogether. It is almost as if he does not even want to try something different. We hope that Mikaal Zulfiqar will realize that he is depriving his fans of watching him truly perform by taking up such projects and choosing to be a part of a quality project. He has so many actors his age and experience to look up to who are experimenting; we would love to see him following their lead.
Usman Mukhtar
When Usman Mukhtar made his first television appearance in Anaa as a problematic character, he made this character memorable by adding charm to it. He caught the attention of the viewers immediately and the fans were left wanting to see more of him. He made a comeback with Sabaat which was an absolute disappointment. Even though the drama had a star-studded cast and the credentials overall were impressive on paper, the role Usman Mukhtar played confused many! Just when the viewers thought that he couldn’t have chosen the worst role to play, he graced the screen as Aswad in Hum Kahan Ke Sacchay Thay who was just as twisted and confused as his character from Sabaat! We are hoping that Usman Mukhtar will be choosing better projects in the future because we hate to see so much star power going to waste! We would not want him to become another Feroze Khan of the industry!

Sharmila called Nadia Khan as Shameless after watching that video because she praised Anisa and talked about her make up, Sharmila found it sarcastic, a lot of fans also criticized Nadia on discussing make up with a respected elderly lady. Sharmila remained active on social media and also launched complaint against Nadia in cybercrime. Nadia remained quiet on the matter but after the complaint she has finally spoken up and posted a vlog on her YouTube channel.
Nadia said, “I didn’t want to make this video but I came here for the sake of my fans and media fraternity. Faisal also urged me to stay away from it but Sharmila kept on posting about it, so I had to come”
Faisal Rao also said that this ugly scenario was uncalled for, just because of most respected Madam Anisa Faruqui. Nadia also said that she didn’t want anyone to talk about Anisa Faruqui on social media.
Talking about that day particular day Nadia said, “lets go to the event, everyone knows that I am a blogger , the day I entered in event, I was with the camera, I didn’t cover all the things but, I only focused important personalities and Anisa Ji was one of them”.
Faisal Rao also said, “Anisa Ji was among a few first ladies who met with us, she first met Nadia with kindness and love, I met her for the first time, she talked with Nadia, she gave importance to me too, which I liked a lot”
Nadia further said, “Anisa took interest in me, she came to me, she introduced herself to me, I gave her respect, I met with sheer love, I just thought that she is elder what can I do for her and I just complimented her. I thought to praise her, we go to weddings we compliment ladies, I did it out of respect and I cheered her by heart. I admired her, she was happy too. I didn’t use a single offensive word” “Why did Sharmila used Shameless word for me, she insulted me by using this word, this is crime”, added Nadia Khan.
She also said, “Those who are saying that the intention was bad should be ashamed as it is only Allah who knows about intention”.
She further said, “I want to ask that why did Sharmila take it wrong, instead she should have been happy, I just praised her mother, was that a lie, isn’t she beautiful. I loved her interests, her love for clothes and jewelry inspired me, I just praised her. It’s a 36 minute video, I only showered love upon her in those two minutes. I have learned to respect elder people, my way of respect is to to compliment them, how can Sharmila say that I was wrong”.
Talking about Family support she said her husband, her father and her mother in law found the video very normal and they didn’t find any bad intention in it. “I say this to my father too, I say him that you are looking handsome. I give time and love to elders. No law can punish tone and intention, but law punishes words”, said Nadia.
Taking about it Faisal Rao said that haters also provoke celebrities towards a certain idea or hateful perception.
Nadia said that Sharmila did a lot of publicity of her complaint which she launched against me. She said that Sharmila only wanted media’s attention. She further said that Sharmila could have texted her instead of posting it online, she could remove that part so easily . She should have not used word shameless for her.
Tonight’s episode of Ishq-e-Laa had its emotional moments even though just like the previous episode the performances, the execution, and some of the details could have been more convincing. Azaan Sami Khan failed to add intensity to the scenes covering his imaginary meetings with Shanaya but these scenes were definitely well written and definitely unexpected as well. Even though Shanaya has died, the writer, for now, has kept her in the picture through such scenes. It was therefore interesting how the aftermath of Shanaya’s murder was covered especially with respect to Azlan. On the other side, Sultan’s family was also shown suffering while the person responsible for ruining everyone’s life lived comfortably with absolutely no remorse. The only aspect of the script which I felt was not up to the mark was how, yet again, Azka’s family’s reaction to Shanaya’s murder was covered. The entire approach was once again more practical than emotional. Azka did not even hold herself accountable for giving Shanaya the information which ultimately led to her murder.
Also, the fact that the women Shanaya was helping out were oblivious of the fact that she had been murdered was not easy to connect to. This episode covered the aftermath of tragic losses by both the families, Azlan’s father’s guilt, and much more. This episode could easily have been dedicated to showing the family’s reactions to Shanaya’s loss but thankfully that was not the case! The director and the writer deserve credit for taking the story forward and not ‘cashing in’ on Shanaya’s murder.
Shanaya and Azlan
This latest episode showed Azlan waking up imagining that Shanaya was by his side and throughout this episode, he kept on looking forward to meeting her. Azlan and Shanaya’s background as well as their present relationship made his reaction relatable. Shanaya was the one person in his life who had always been there with him in some form or the other – first a friend and then a life partner. When initially he was not sure whether he wanted to get married to Shanaya or not, he proposed to her only because he couldn’t imagine his life without her. The writer took her time setting the perfect foundation for this particular track and especially the aftermath of this tragedy.
The viewers also found out today that there was actually a bigger reason why Shanaya took Azlan with her to show him how she spent her days. Even though he had been in complete denial when he went to meet the woman Shanaya was helping out he told her that she had been murdered and provided her with the help she needed. This basically went to show that Shanaya will perhaps be able to change Azlan more after her death than she did when she was alive!
Tonight’s episode also covered Azlan’s father’s guilt and resulting attempts to get his hands on the murderers. Apparently, everyone knows who got Shanaya killed but no one has the guts to take action against the perpetrators. It remains to be seen how far Azlan’s father will go to avenge Shanaya’s murder. It was really odd when Azlan’s mother casually asked her husband why he wasn’t eating and if everything was okay when they were at the breakfast table! This particular scene was short but it made absolutely no sense!
Azka’s Track
Sultan’s family’s struggles were covered extensively in this episode. They struggled to keep the child they had saved, sane and safe. By the end of this episode, the financial troubles took over everything else. The way Azlan treated Kanwal when she came to see his mother in order to extend her condolences went to show that right now he did not have a soft spot for this family and he was not thinking about how he had treated Azka in the past. I have always felt that Azka and Azlan’s confrontations are a thing of the past. I am wondering if he will ever hold himself accountable for what he did back then and honestly speaking I feel that he should not since Shanaya more than made up for it! Also, this family does come across as thankless at times! There should have been more scenes showing how Shanaya’s death had impacted them since she had always worked for them so selflessly. Even though Azka had met Shanaya only once, such a young and tragic death would leave a person shaken yet the way she thought about Shanaya was completely void of emotions. The only good part of this track was Azka saying a prayer for Shanaya even though this was a dream sequence, I did however feel that Yumna Zaidi’s performance was not up to the mark in this particular scene.
Final Remarks
The story took an interesting emotional turn with this episode. Some of the recent developments were completely unexpected such as Azlan’s imaginary meetings with his wife and his present state of mind. I am definitely curious to find out what direction the story will go from here. The preview of the next episode also piqued my curiosity. The drama has a mystery/thriller feel to it as well. Out of all the performances tonight, I liked Laila Wasti’s short but powerful performance the most. Her performance went to show that a good actor can make his or her presence felt in the shortest span of time! How much more impactful could Azlan’s scenes have been if Azaan Sami Khan also performed just as exceptional as well. Uzma Hassan’s make-up in the scene at Azlan’s house was one of the many unrealistic make-up looks sported by different actors in this episode. While Azlan’s imaginary meetings with Shanaya made sense, showing such a scene with Azka was a bit far-fetched even as a dream sequence!

Pakistani dramas have evolved over the years and the term ‘hero’ has been redefined in different ways. While we have seen the most unconventional leading men who swept us off of our feet there are many others who were just plain toxic. Unfortunately, many of these toxic male characters have been glorified in our dramas recently. Showing the toxic traits of such male leads as ‘normal’ and not something that is clearly problematic is the real issue right now. If these men were shown as problematic characters, it would not have been a cause of concern at all. Just like the greedy and heartless leading ladies, these toxic men seem to be taking over our television screens. Unfortunately, many leading actors have played these roles and even defended them! Thankfully, most of the viewers could clearly see the toxicity of these characters and refused to accept them as ‘heroes’ even though the dramas with such leading men had a big fan following.
The writers who pen these characters down follow certain set patterns which would all be red flags in the real world but in dramas these traits are shown as acceptable. Not only this but there have also been instances when the viewers were ‘forced’ to feel for such men! These leading men are sometimes feudals, at other times young men from middle-class families and even the highly educated therapists and businessmen in some dramas have these toxic traits. Interestingly enough, some actors such as Feroze Khan, Usman Mukhtar, and Imran Abbas choose to play such toxic roles repeatedly!
Here are some of the most common traits of toxic male leads in Pakistani dramas:
My Way or The Highway
Lately, in many of the dramas, the leading men tend to fall for the leading ladies and their idea of ‘love’ is so twisted that they force them into these women’s lives. There have been so many such examples in recent dramas and unfortunately, the writers presented these characters as ‘victims’. The complete lack of regard for the woman or her consent is taken so lightly that it is presented as a problem, not for the leading lady but the leading man! Saif-ur-Rehman from Muqaddar, Farhad from Khuda Aur Mohabbat 3, Hamza from Ishqiya were some of the many leading men from dramas who thought they were entitled to someone’s love even though the women they were ‘in love’ with either did not want to marry them or were more than willing to move on.
Unfortunately, this toxic trait of the characters is glorified in a time and age when consent is given utmost importance. The Pakistani drama writers definitely need to upgrade their priorities and benchmarks for the ultimate romantic heroes by replacing them with men who respect a woman’s consent.
Lack of Communication
Communication is the key in any relationship but most of the toxic men in our dramas especially those who are either engaged or married, fail to have decent conversations with their wives. These men sometimes ‘forget’ to communicate to their fiancés that they were forced into a nikkah until it is their wedding day, a recent example being Zamin from Thora Sa Haq. There are others who listen to everything everyone else has to say but do not have the common sense to gauge things based on what they see themselves! Such men do not believe in asking their wives what the actual truth is even though they have regular interactions and conversations with them. These men are basically the perfect example of what not to do in a relationship! Lately, Zarar from Amanat is one such character who refused to tell his fiancé what was going on and later on blamed her for not believing him! Aswad from Hum Kahan Ke Sacchay Thay was another such toxic male lead who did not bother giving Mehreen a chance to explain himself but decided to marry her – for all the wrong reasons, of course. Harris from Sabaat was the same as well, his communication skills were negligible even though he was a practicing therapist!
Falling For Lies & Conspiracies
Since there is no concept of communicating with their partners, these toxic men easily fall for lies and conspiracies which are targeted against the women they claim to love. They fall for every lie that is told and it is almost as if they wait for conspiracies to surface so that they can play the naïve victim! This ‘weakness’ is often used as a means to justify their toxic behavior and very often such men are even forgiven in the end! It is frustrating watching men who run businesses and generally come across as intelligent people to fall for these lies. Some of these characters make it look like our writers are convinced that men lack basic common sense and cannot make intelligent decisions on their own.
Continuous Gaslighting
Even though these leading men are the ones responsible for most of the problems in a relationship, they are often shown gaslighting and in such a way that yet again they come across as victims. They blame the women in their lives for misunderstanding them and for not being able to keep their part of the bargain! The worst kind of toxicity shown in dramas is when these men marry the women they blame and make it a point to remind them of their ‘shortcomings’ on a regular basis whenever they feel frustrated. Sadly, most of the time such toxicity is shown as normal behavior and is never highlighted as being gaslighting.
Refusing To Take Responsibility
All the toxic male leads characters are penned down in such a manner that they manage to evade responsibility for even their biggest blunders by blaming other people for fooling them into doing things a certain way. There have also been so many instances when these men even went ahead with another nikkah and failed to take responsibility for even that! The way these toxic male leads put the blame on either the women who those conspiring against them is done so tactfully so that those viewers who are easily charmed by their on-screen persona have a reason to plead their case. It is almost as if there is a deliberate effort to ‘confuse’ the viewers about the actual intentions and nature of these characters.
Most of these toxic male characters blur the lines between acceptable and unacceptable behavior which is definitely the most concerning. Do you think our writers and producers need to stop glorifying such toxic characters? Which one of these toxic traits do you think are the worst? Can you think of any other?
