Surkh Chandni Episode 5 & 6 Story Review – Great Acting

Opening Thoughts – Shift In The Story:

Ohkay so, this episode of Surkh Chandni was nicely executed. I am glad that this episode ended on a very different note. I was relieved to know that they kind of moved the story forward after showing the suffering of everyone pretty much within this episode. While watching Surkh Chandni last night, I was thinking that dramas like these give the actors a great opportunity to showcase their acting skills but when it comes to the story & characterization, there is barely anything new there but by the end of this episode, I was actually happy that they are going to give a different direction to the story & from now on, it won’t be purely about the victim’s suffering but mostly about how the culprit will be nabbed. To show the entire journey & the process is still a better approach than just focusing on the suffering and supposedly buri kismat of the acid attack victim!

The Secret Is Out:

Jawad thought that by instilling the fear in Aida, he will be able to keep her silenced but he actually underestimated Aida. Yes, all that has happened to Aida has totally shattered her but then assuming that she will never tell the truth was basically Jawad’s misapprehension. Even though Aida has lost everything, the confidence, the courage, the motivation to live & all of that was realistically portrayed but I felt relieved when she actually shared everything with her mother, Rukhsana. Aida had to do this in order to feel less burdened. It was nice to see that even though Aida kept everything to herself & she didn’t want to make anyone worried, she confided in her mother & shared her fears with her. It was also nice to know that Aida’s parents didn’t let Aida feel that something about her had changed & that they were being burdened by her, rather they let her feel loved & secure because of which Aida was able to share such an important detail with Rukhsana.

Jawad told Aida that he was capable of hurting Amaan too & that was a reason enough for Aida to back out & stay silent because she loved Amaan so much to let anything happen to him. It was nice to see Aida finding some support & encouragement from a few people around her but then it was unfortunate that she was also being mistreated & being told that she was being a nuisance & nothing else by Mukhtar & Shumaila!

Mukhtar is someone who doesn’t really have a mind of his own & because he believes the white lies of his wife so much, he ends up doing all that she asks for because that is Mukhtar’s way of compensating & showcasing his love for her. Without even letting anyone know Mukhtar decided that he doesn’t want to file a case against the culprit. It is also because he knows that his father is financially dependent on him, so it kind of gives him the edge to make such decisions without consulting him.

Shumaila has her own thing going on with Jawad. She is an opportunist & since she has seen the kind of favours she gets from Jawad by helping him with his agendas, she is making the most of it. Mansha Pasha really has taken a challenging role & she is succeeding in making us all hate Shumaila due to her flawless acting. It is nice to see that Mansha Pasha has not overdone her expressions & has rather kept it very subtle which seems far more realistic.

So, Rukhsana ended up telling Safina about Jawad being the one who did this to Aida & I am glad the secret is finally out & no one will be making assumptions anymore. Even though it was heart breaking to see Aida taking the brunt for something she was not even responsible for in the first place, it was still good to see that she had a support system like Amaan who was ready to do whatever it takes to not only bring her back to life but also put the culprit behind bars.

I am glad that the writer has kept things a little unpredictable in Surkh Chandni like initially everyone bring totally cool with Aida & Amaan’s liking for each other, supporting them & not pushing Aida to marry a financially stable guy like Jawad & now Aida telling the truth. At times these things are always given a typical approach but Surkh Chandni is turning out to be different which is actually nice. I dreaded that it might take Aida 10+ episodes to expose Jawad but she took my by surprise & I hope I keep getting surprised like this in the future episodes too.

Closing Thoughts – Great Acting:

Overall, this episode of Surkh Chandhni was good to tune to. I am glad that the depressing phase is kind of over & now the battle will begin where Jawad will have to face the consequences & Aida will get the justice she deserves. Even though it is going to be a long journey I am glad things have started to make a progress. Sohai Ali Abro has nailed the character of Aida, she made me feel her pain every step of the way. It is also good to see Sohai Ali Abro not going overboard & rather keeping everything very subdued & realistic. Asad Siddique & Mansha Pasha are actually a treat to watch, despite their characters being annoying, their acting makes it all very interesting. Osman Khalid Butt is also doing a good job but at times it feels his larger than life expressions are best suited for a big silver screen & not a small TV screen, like he makes it obvious that this is him acting for a drama. The direction is apt so far & I am looking forward to the next episode as it promised a lot more drama. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Surkh Chandni.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza

Inkaar Episode 16 Story Review – Brilliantly Done

This was another phenomenal episode of Inkaar which covered the legal proceedings as well as the struggles of different characters in an impactful manner. The performances and the execution continue to be impressive. This show is also well-paced since every episode has substantial developments to its credit. The writer has done complete justice to all the tracks by highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of different characters in such a way that it is extremely easy to connect to their struggles. This episode also depicted a real picture of the bitter realities of the society we live in. Hajra’s strength, her resilience and the relationship she has with her father was yet again the highlight of this episode. The writer has realistically shown that choosing the path Hajra and her father have chosen is extremely difficult.

Latest Developments

Without wasting any time, the writer covered the direction this legal case was going to take by showing different hearings. Tonight’s episode opened with Rehan changing his statement and that’s when his lawyer decided that making up a story to prove that Hajra wasn’t as ‘innocent’ as she was trying to prove because this would strengthen their case. The idea perhaps was that proving Hajra wrong would help them prove that she was a liar who couldn’t be trusted. Hajra’s lawyer’s confidence and the mention of the CCTV footage suggested that his approach was going to be more professional than that of Rehan’s lawyer.

Inkaar Episode 16 Story Review - Brilliantly Done

Rehan’s mother actually went to meet Hajra and it seems like she also thinks that she can perhaps persuade Hajra to ‘forgive’ her son. Although Rehan’s mother is not the kind of person who would approve of whatever her son did but the fact that she is doing exactly what he wants shows that she probably blames Rehan’s father and stepmother more than Rehan for whatever happened. Rehan’s frame of mind was also shown extremely convincingly. He is a psychopath who only knows what he wants – other than that he doesn’t care about anything else. His sole motivation right now is that if he gets away, he can marry Hajra! This basically goes to show that he does not understand the gravity of the situation and wants what he likes at all costs.

Shayan on the other hand is silently doing whatever Hajra wants him to do. He is the perfect example of a man who not only respects the woman he loves but would also do anything for her – even if that means staying away from her. Hajra’s attempts to keep everyone she loves and cares about away from the hearing which would cover details she didn’t want these people to hear, was one of the most emotional parts of this episode. I couldn’t help but think about the initial episodes in which Hajra was shown as a withdrawn person solely because of the fact that she allowed herself to be fooled in such a manner. She loves her father more than anyone else therefore she was also disappointed in herself for letting her father down. Now watching her face all those questions and worry about what was going through her father’s head made me feel for both of them.

Inkaar Episode 16 Story Review - Brilliantly Done

Final Remarks

The best part of this episode was watching Hajra smiling when her lawyer pointed out things which would go in her favor, she also took a few decisions which showed that she wants to be in control now and watching her determination in the next episode’s preview was an absolute delight. Yumna Zaidi’s brilliant performance makes her scenes even more powerful. Imran Ashraf owns his role completely. Sami Khan and Shayan’s character is extremely likable. Rehan Sheikh once again outshines in one of the best roles he has played. I absolutely love the grace he adds to this character. This fight is going to get more intense, this episode proved that the writer is going to stay focused and will not be wasting any time beating around the bush therefore really looking forward to the upcoming episodes.

Do share your thoughts about tonight’s episode of Inkaar.

Top 10 Pakistani Drama Actors 2019 (Updated List)

Top 10 Pakistani Drama Actors 2019 – Half of the year has already passed therefore this is a good time to talk about all those actors who so far have given the audience some memorable performances and most importantly did not compromise on quality. We firmly believe that choosing the right kind of projects is really important for any actor since only a solid script and a good director can bring out the best in an actor. It has been wonderful watching some of these actors grow over the years. Their powerful performances this year have made them few of the most sought after actors in the industry. The viewers wait for their projects and have complete faith in them. This list contains the name of some of the best actors of our industry who continued to impress the viewers in 2019 as well.

Imran Ashraf

This year Imran Ashraf proved himself like never before. There is no denying the fact that Imran Ashraf’s acting skills are phenomenal but choosing some of the best scripts this year made Imran Ashraf more popular and recognized than ever before. Ranjha Ranjha Kardi made Imran Ashraf a household name. Even those people who don’t follow Pakistani dramas got to know Bhola, Imran Ashraf, because his character wasn’t just a massive hit on television but Bhola’s short clips also went viral on social media. Even those people who know very little about Pakistani drama industry were curious to know who this actor was. When a character becomes an actor’s identity, it isn’t easy breaking free from it but Imran Ashraf did just that by playing a negative role in drama serial Inkaar which aired when Bhola was the talk of the town. Imran Ashraf not only made the viewers fall in love with one character this year but also managed make the viewers uncomfortable and upset by playing another which was poles apart from the other one. This basically shows how versatile Imran Ashraf is which is why he definitely deserves the top slot in this list.

Top 10 Pakistani Drama Actors 2019 (Updated List)

Yumna Zaidi

Yumna Zaidi never fails to impress the viewers. She is a dedicated actress who once again made some really fine choices this year. After enthralling the viewers with her effortless portrayal in Dar Si Jati Hei Sila last year, Yumna Zaidi starred in Dil Kya Kare in a different role giving yet another solid performance. Her performance in Inkaar however has been the most appreciated one this year, so far. Yumna Zaidi outshines in a challenging role in Inkaar and always delivers her best performance in every episode. There are very few actors who take acting so seriously at such a young age and Yumna Zaidi is one of them. Her recent performance in Ishq Zah-e- Naseeb also shows that Yumna Zaidi only works when she knows that she can give her best. Yumna Zaidi is also loved by the viewers because she is very confident in her own skin. We are looking forward to more wonderful performances by Yumna Zaidi in the upcoming months.

Top 10 Pakistani Drama Actors 2019 (Updated List)

Iqra Aziz

Iqra Aziz was part of two of the biggest and most liked dramas this year. She played lead roles in Suno Chanda and Ranjha Ranjha Kardi – two completely different genres and roles which had nothing in common. Iqra Aziz outdid herself in drama serial Ranjha Ranjha Kardi in particular and made the trials and tribulations of her character come alive on screen. Iqra Aziz proved that she can play a simple role just as well as a complex one. Iqra is definitely one of those actors now who are the reason why many of the viewers would tune into a new drama. After her first project this year, viewers are already waiting for what she has in store for them next. 2019 has started on a really positive note for Iqra Aziz and we hope that it will only get better.

Top 10 Pakistani Drama Actors 2019 (Updated List)

Madiha Imam

Madiha Imam has her own standing in the drama industry. Her simple yet affective style of acting coupled with her overall personality gives her a definite appeal. This year Madiha Imam has been part of projects which can easily be termed as entertaining family dramas. The characters Madiha Imam played in Baba Jani and Mera Rab Waris were relatively simple but very well written and translated on screen with precision. Madiha Imam added more finesse to these characters and was the main attraction of the dramas she was a part of this year. The on-screen chemistry she shares with her co-stars is another reason why she deserves to be in this list.

Top 10 Pakistani Drama Actors 2019 (Updated List)

Sami Khan

Sami Khan’s portrayals are always subtle and on point. This year Sami Khan acted in one of the biggest films and he is also part of one of the most liked dramas, Inkaar. Sami Khan always makes his presence felt with his realistic portrayals. He can make even the most flawed characters look appealing and lately he has done variety of characters. Shayan’s character in drama serial Inkaar has gone through different phases in these 15 weeks or so and Sami Khan has done justice to all these stages in Shayan’s life. Sami Khan always leaves his mark and we are hoping that his character in Ishq Zah-e-Naseeb will be equally interesting.

Top 10 Pakistani Drama Actors 2019 (Updated List)

Shehzad Sheikh

There is no denying to the fact that Shehzad Sheikh has not only come a long way but has also carved his niche in the industry. Shehzad Sheikh is one of those very few actors who know what works well for them and he does justice to all the characters that he chooses to portray. Shehzad Sheikh might not be too experimental and he usually plays it safe but he does portray all his characters to perfection. In the recent dramas like Khud Parast and Ana, Shehzad Sheikh has showed his potential to the best of his ability and he is turning out to be one such actor who can not go wrong in his portrayal of any sort of character.

Top 10 Pakistani Drama Actors 2019 (Updated List)

Sanam Chaudhry

Sanam Chauhdry is very selective with her work that is why she gets the option of playing unique and different characters while offering variety to her fans. Sanam Chauhdry has always been really good with her selection of dramas and because of doing limited work, she puts her heart and soul in her acting and breathes life into her characters. We have seen some brilliant performances by Sanam Chaudhry in the last couple of years and her winning streak has continued in the year 2019 as well. Meer Abru, the currently on-air drama is yet another example of how far Sanam Chaudhry has come and how she can carry the entire drama on her shoulders. Watching Sanam Chauhdry on screen is nothing less than a treat and her heart-touching acting sets her apart.

Top 10 Pakistani Drama Actors 2019 (Updated List)

Sajal Ali

Sajal Ali is an undisputed queen of expressions. The way Sajal Ali brings her characters to life and portrays them on screen is unmatchable. Sajal Ali is well and truly a gifted actor that is why she has garnered a huge fandom and popularity over the years. Sajal Ali is also one such actress who despite proving her mettle, loves to challenge herself again and again, because of which she always bring something new to the table and wins hearts over and over again. Even though it is a known fact that drama Aangan has failed to impress the drama buffs but Sajal Ali remains the best and most admired aspect of the drama. The way she has played the dynamic character of Chammi is absolute perfection and in a drama like Aangan, Sajal has succeeded in making the viewers cry and laugh with her. Sajal Ali’s performance as Chammi in Aangan remains one of the best of her career so far.

Noor Hassan is currently seen in Meer Abru and he has come back stronger than ever. We have seen quite a few performances of Noor Hassan in the past but the one in Meer Abru is beyond brilliant. It is good to see that Noor Hassan decided to take a break and chose not to appear in substandard dramas with no substantial characters. Cheekh Episode 23 Story Review – Disaster

Opening Thoughts – Filler:

Ohkay so, this episode of Cheekh was once again a filler which had nothing to offer. It is a done deal that they have literally ruined the essence of the drama & the impact that Cheekh would have made if it had aired twice a week. Since they opted for single episode per week, they heavily compromised upon the pace & it seriously makes me anxious to know that we’re only half way through this drama!!!

Cat-Walk:

Mannat the Sherni now turned Beeghi Billi went seriously mute in this entire episode. In this entire episode the focus was on Mannat’s cat-walk that she did as if she was walking on a ramp & not in the corridor of a mental asylum. Every time anyone like Shayan, Mannat’s mother or even Wajih went to meet Mannat, she took it as an opportunity to practice for Bridal Fashion Week.

Shayan was devastated at how low his brothers stooped in order to prove Mannat wrong. Shayan finally made up his mind that there was no two way about it, he still had some hope in his heart but after seeing how far Yawar & Wajih went, he was totally convinced that he has nothing to do with his brothers. Haya seems upset with Wajih & Yawar too but then she finds herself helpless. Ramzan came back with his poorly delivered dialogues & I promise that I did not understand a single word that he said, I love how consistent he is in delivering his dialogues poorly!

Mannat’s mother is getting way more screen time than required & when the side characters get more coverage than the main characters then we all know that the creative team has nothing left to show & they are just dragging it!!!

Closing Thoughts – Disaster:

This drama has lost the plot & there’s absolutely nothing special about it. It is a typical Zanjabeel Asim Shah drama where initial few episodes are good & then they wrap the drama miraculously after stretching it like a chewing gum. It is unfortunate that this drama despite having so much of potential is turning out to be a disaster. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Cheekh.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

Ishq Zahe Naseeb Episode 1 Story Review – The Wait Is Over

Introductory Details:

Ohkay so, writing of Hashim Nadeem, direction of Farooq Rind & production of Moomal Productions; one of the most highly anticipated drama Ishq Zahe Naseeb has finally commenced & the first episode was simple & introduced the characters in a very effortless manner. After watching the first episode of Ishq Zahe Naseeb, I am glad that they started off on a very simple & straight forward note because we all know that it deals with a very complex subject & character, so I liked this approach of the writer as well as director where they are taking it slow & not just giving too much away in the initial stages.

Cast & Characters:

So we have Gauhar (Sonya Hussyn), a hopeless romantic who lives in a bubble, just like every random girl belonging to a humble family background. Gauhar does not have any big dreams as such but yes, she just wants to get married to Kashif (Sami Khan) & lead a happy life. Gauhar’s plans are simple & sweet but she definitely has no idea what life has in store for her. Gauhar believes in horoscopes, palm reading, fortune telling & all those things that help her live in a bubble of her own & deviate her focus from the actual & bitter world that she is a part of. Kashif doesn’t take her obsession with all of this seriously but yes, he just accepts Gauhar the way she is; silly & sweet. We didn’t get much insight into Kashif’s character but for starters, it was shown that he loves Gauhar a lot & can not imagine his life without her.

Ishq Zahe Naseeb Episode 1 Story Review - The Wait Is Over

Gauhar has not let her surroundings & her family dynamics affect her personality, but that doesn’t mean she is not considerate or aware of what happens around her. Gauhar’s father is unwell, her brother Saleem & sister Bushra (Jinaan Hussain) support the family. Bushra is practical & straight forward, she is someone who believes in finding solutions to the problems that she & her family are faced with. Bushra wants to help her family but because her fiancé doesn’t want her to continue with her job, she finds herself in a bit of a fix. Bushra wants to do everything to make her marriage work but she also wants to help her family. I liked how just a few basic conversations were used to show the mindsets & personalities of all the characters in the drama. Saleem also does a lot for his family but then his wife Zakia has her own goals & she makes sure that her husband obliges.

Gauhar’s paternal cousin Jahangir (Khalid Malik) seems to be an intense & interesting character. He has a different personality & he obviously wants to get married to Gauhar. It seems Jahangir’s father Qayyum is a low-scale loan shark & even Gauhar’s father is indebted to him.

Ishq Zahe Naseeb Episode 1 Story Review - The Wait Is Over

Then comes Sameer (Zahid Ahmed), the central character of this drama. I liked that the writer didn’t give away much about Sameer but just shared a bit of information for the viewers to help them understand his backstory. So far we can not really form an opinion about him but I am sure it is going to be interesting exploring this character. Sameer has probably had a traumatic childhood & it might be linked to his mother (Ismat Zaidi) who even now is probably a very rigid woman. Sameer’s childhood experiences have affected him on a mental & personal level because of which he now suffers from some personality issues. I so want to learn more about Sameer.

Bushra works for Sameer & it seems he has had quite a few experiences in the past. Sameer was engaged to be married to Zoha (Azekah Daniel) & then she passed away. Some people believe she committed suicide while others claim that Sameer killed her. A mystery which will be unveiled later.

Gauhar & Kashif share a dream of living their life together but Gauhar’s told that fate has something different in store for her. She will come across two men in her life & both Gauhar & Kashif will have similar experiences. The first episode basically teased about all of those scenarios which will later give the direction to the story & I am looking forward to finding out more.

Closing Thoughts – Simple For A Reason:

Overall, the first episode of Ishq Zahe Naseeb was mysterious, it had a lot going on but still, they kept it very simple & didn’t complicate it right from the beginning. Sonya Hussyn & Sami Khan were impressive & Zahid Ahmed did the best he could given the limited screen time & almost no dialogues in the first episode. We all know there’s so much more to Sameer’s character & seeing this performance of Zahid Ahmed will be a remarkable experience. I will say that if you’re going to watch the very first episode with super high expectations then please don’t because they have kept it subtle & simple for a very good reason as later it is going to get very complicated & intense. I found myself enjoying the first episode & when it ended, I so wanted to see more. Definitely looking forward to what is yet to come. The OST seems nice & the direction was perfect too. Please share your thoughts about this very first episode of Ishq Zahe Naseeb.

Meer Abru Episode 20 & 21 Story Review – Superb

Opening Thoughts – Phenomenal:

Ohkay so, first just let me ask Team Meer Abru straight away that how did they make such a good drama, I am beyond impressed. This drama just keeps on getting better & better, which is just amazing. The direction, execution, twists & turns, story-telling, acting, all the different scenarios; everything about Meer Abru is beyond impressive & what acts like an icing on the cake is the perfect & fast pace of this drama. Every set of episodes has something new to offer which changes the dynamics of the story.

We Need More Characters Like Abru:

These two episodes focused on how Maha was bent on ruining Saim & Abru’s relationship, but what’s sad was the fact that Meer knew exactly what she was doing & he was kind of hoping for that to happen too. Maha continued to make Abru awkward by making it obvious to her that she knew Saim more & he was more attached to Maha than his own wife. Abru immediately realized that something was not right but Saim didn’t feel such a thing as he assumed that Maha was just being herself. Saim had no idea that Maha was trying to create a rift between Saim & Abru plus he also didn’t really know that Maha was making Abru uncomfortable with her chumminess with him!

Abru has fallen in love with Saim, even though she developed feelings for him over the time, she somehow felt it was the right time to let him know. May be seeing Maha in the picture made Abru realize that Saim meant so much more to her that she had realized before. Abru confessed her feelings & that was the sweetest part, Saim really couldn’t believe that Abru was so observant & that she noticed even the smallest of gestures that he did for her or anyone else. Abru felt happy that she had finally let Saim know what was in her heart but they both had no idea that their relationship & love for each other was going to be tested.

On Haya’s end, she was being mentally tortured by Waleed, but what else could she expect from a shallow & selfish guy like him. Walled thought this was the best way he could get back at Haya for ruining his life. The highlight of this entire episode of Meer Abru for me was the way Abru motivated Haya & told her to not settle for Waleed’s atrocities just like that. For a second, I couldn’t believe that this was exactly what I was hearing because who in our drama ever tells a girl to take a stand? This is the reason why I like this drama even more that we have a girl like Abru who is so self-sufficient & emotionally sorted & now she was the one telling her sister to buck up & fight for her rights. Abru’s heart finally melted for Haya & it was nice to see that Haya now had Abru to guide her through.

So, Maha created this misunderstanding between Abru & Saim. Saim knew that Abru loved Meer when they got married, so it was like everything was just transparent in front of him but now Abru was made to believe that Saim has been hiding his feelings about Maha from Abru all along. Abru left but that basically sealed the deal about the fact that more & more misunderstandings were going to be created because suddenly there was no communication between Abru & Saim plus Abru was not even giving him a chance to explain. I did feel that Abru was being stern in her approach & she was only believing what she wanted to believe, something exactly that Meer did to her as well.

Saim tried his best to make it all right but he had no idea that Maha is playing her cards well, she kept on putting Saim in one difficulty after another but Saim just didn’t know how to come out of it as Abru was not by his side. I felt kind of relieved that Saim heard Maha discussing her plan with someone on the phone, like it is not a secret anymore. Even though the preview did suggest that Saim was talking on those lines with Maha but I feel it might be his way of having her confess everything, we’ll find out. Meer has been the mastermind all along but he is playing it subtly, he lets Abru know openly that he still loves her but when it comes to Saim, he keeps it subliminal & doesn’t really show it to him so much. Meer already knew about what Maha has done that is why very subtly he planted a seed of doubt in Saim’s heart against Abru which forced Saim to be worried about the fact that Abru was in contact with Meer. Misunderstanding after misunderstanding, doubts & suspicion are going to ruin Saim & Abru’s relationship, but somehow I am relived that Saim did not cheat on Abru, they both are just being the victims of planning & plotting that is being done against them. Let’s see what happens!

Closing Thoughts – Brilliant:

Overall, these two episodes like all the previous episodes of Meer Abru were beyond brilliant. Sanam Chaudhry is the star of this drama & so are Mirza Zain Baig & Noor Hassan. They all have elevated the level of this drama with their phenomenal performances. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for us. Please share your thoughts about these episodes of Meer Abru.

Aangan Episode 26 Story Review – The Struggles Continue

Tonight’s episode of Aangan was depressing but the post partition episodes so far have been far better than the pre partition ones. The characters are still struggling and the overall feel of the play is grim but the scenes are less repetitive and these latest episodes have been relatively well-paced. After, watching everyone suffer for such a long time, it will definitely be rewarding if some of these characters find happiness wherever they can find it. Aangan always had very few happy moments and these happy moments were always followed by something even more depressing. Tonight’s episode too covered how things were slowly changing for some of the characters and some of the characters which had disappeared made an appearance. The loud background score was the most off-putting element of this episode, other than that it was decent episode.

The Changes and Comebacks

Tonight’s episode opened with a scene which showed how things were changing for the better for Jamil’s family. The marriage discussion later on had done-to-death written over it and it suggested that Jamil had not really moved on. Chammi too is still in love with Jamil and these new changes in her life have changed nothing for her. Jamil and Chammi’s scenes showed two completely different people otherwise who had matured with time but were still struggling in some ways. Alia and Ahsan’s scenes made it quite clear that these two were not meant to be together after all. Shehroz Sabzwari was quite likable in this role and the short lived friendship these two shared was a nice break from all the sadness for a little while.

Aangan Episode 26 Story Review - The Struggles Continue

Alia gave me so many reasons to like her once again tonight. The way she welcomed Shakeel and fought for him said a great deal about her priorities. This made me wonder how different things would have been for her if her mother had not taken all those decisions which distanced her from rest of her family. Mawra Hocane has been adorable as Alia. This entire track would have been perfect if Alia’s love affair with Jamil Bhai was not covered in such a filmy manner. Safdar had no idea that Tehmina committed suicide, which was not the least bit convincing given the fact that someone had informed him about her marriage but that person never told him that she died! Surely the news of her death was more ‘important’ than that of her marriage with Jamil.

The preview of the next episode covering Safdar and Alia’s scene was strange and hopefully misleading! Whatever Shakeel did in this episode reminded me all those times when he used to steal Chammi’s money and no one believed her. Shakeel has not changed at all, he is obviously someone who does not treasure relationships at all perhaps because he never got enough love when he was growing up. Those scenes in the past covering Shakeel’s defiance, lies and manipulative ways made more sense tonight. He stole Alia’s jewelry and money even though she treated him with so much love. Like most of the characters in this play, Shakeel was always a lost soul and unlike Jamil, he was not able to find a definite purpose in life. Alia too is still in love with Jamil which makes me wonder who he will end up with eventually. Chammi and Alia both deserve to be happy. It was good to see Alia telling her mother off and finally putting her foot down.

No one missed Israr since there was no mention of him at all. Jamil’s mother wants him to get married and Bua’s comment about the girl they went to see looking like her was funny. Tonight, I felt for Jamil as well. There were also quite a few dialogues which yet again highlighted the bitter realities of partition.

Final Remarks

The performances tonight were on point and this episode just like the last one was quite engaging. Everything makes more sense now and I am hoping that this drama will not have a sad ending – we have seen enough sadness already!

Do share your thoughts about tonight’s episode of Aangan.

Mera Rab Waris – An Overview

Written By: Jahanzeb Qamar
Directed By: Asad Jabbal
Produced by: 7th Sky Entertainment

Mera Rab Waris has been on air for more than 20 weeks and although it isn’t picture perfect, it breaks quite a few stereotypes and has a female protagonist who is different as well as likable. The first few episodes of Mera Rab Waris showed the clarity with which the writer focused on different pressures and criticism girls face when they decide to follow a path which is unlike others. There are times when this drama can be a typical saas bahu story but the refreshing elements stand out in the play more than the stereotypical ones especially because of the way the main protagonist deals with these situations. The first 15 episodes were well paced and after that the story slowed down a bit. Mera Rab Waris would have been the perfect entertainment if it wasn’t stretched. Madiha Imam is the star of the show in every single episode and her on-screen chemistry with Danish Taimoor makes their scenes a treat to watch even when the scenarios are somewhat preachy.

The Main Protagonist Ayesha

Ayesha (played beautifully by Madiha Imam) is one such girl who observes strict parda and does not compromise on her values even if it means losing a job or the only man she ever fell for. Ayesha’s character has a lot going for it; the writer has convincingly shown that a girl who does parda can be just as intelligent and open-minded as the one who wears Western clothes – perhaps more. Most importantly, showing that Ayesha was perfectly capable of falling in love with someone gave her character the human element it needed. I am glad that the writer avoided the rich boy, poor girl scenario and decided to tell the story of two people with the same financial background but different values. The way Ayesha’s character was introduced and has been etched-out in general has been remarkable. The first two episodes laid down her priorities and the relationship she had with everyone around her beautifully on screen. The solid start of this drama played a big role in keeping my interest alive in it. Madiha Imam deserves due credit for making Ayesha more likable even though her outlook sometimes doesn’t go well with the role she is playing – the heavy make-up and the net scarves. I am pretty certain however that this must have been the demand of the production house or the channel since Madiha Imam is most often quite comfortable in her own skin and would happily compromise on glamour if that is what her role demanded.

Mera Rab Waris - An Overview

Ayesha’s relationship with her parents (played gracefully by Fazila Qazi and Tanveer Jamal) is one of the best things about this play. They love and understand their daughter, even though they might not have the same priorities as Ayesha but unlike so many other parents in Pakistani dramas, they have tremendous respect for the choices Ayesha has made in her life. Ayesha’s character reminds me of Noor in Noor-e-Zindagi – the kind of woman who can turn everyone’s life around due to her strength and positivity.

Ayesha’s relationship with Faizi (played impeccably by Mirza Zain Baig) was also the highlight of this drama for the longest time. Their interactions have been heart-warming because they were written, shot and acted-out so well. Mirza Zain Baig has performed especially well in scenes which cover Faizi’s feelings for Ayesha. His body language shows the kind of respect he feels for Ayesha and his anger is reflected equally well by him. Ayesha’s feelings for him have been translated brilliantly too and this is definitely something the writer deserves credit for too. The limitations, love and respect in this relationship has been laid down so well right from the get-go.

Ayesha’s troubled relationship with her mother-in-law (Seemi Pasha) in particular has to be the most repititive and boring aspect of this entire show. Her mother-in-law’s attempts to bring her down despite of all the good things she has done for this family, make her the only unreasonable character in this play.

Mera Rab Waris - An Overview

Haris and His Family

Haris (nice underplayed by Danish Taimoor) does not have the strong personality Ayesha has and the way he fell for her was also convincing since being somewhat shallow, her appearance was the first thing about her which attracted him. Later on, when he figured out that he never wanted the kind of wife his mother had always envisioned for him, he made a decision which he has done a great job of upholding so far. Haris isn’t only genuinely in love with Ayesha but the fact that he is also in awe of her reflected from their very first meeting. Ayesha has introduced him to a world, he never knew existed and his struggle to understand what he wants from life has been shown convincingly. He sees the world through Ayesha’s eyes except for the recent developments in his friendship with Ayla (Shameen Khan). Tipu Sharif has done justice to his character although the character itself doesn’t have much going for it.

Except for Haris’ mother, everyone else in the family has accepted Ayesha as part of this family. However, Ayesha’s decision to talk to Faizi regarding Nimra’s proposal might make things complicated for her in the future.

Final Remarks

Overall, Mera Rab Waris is a must watch for all those viewers who want to watch a simple story with a different narrative. The dialogues and situations never disappoint. Ayesha’s character is one of the finest female characters we have seen in dramas in recent times – definitely a breath of fresh air. Madiha Imam deserves an award for her sweet portrayal and especially for making this character so pleasant to watch. The downside is that this drama is being stretched and like every other drama which airs on Geo, the soundtrack has been used excessively. I must admit that I have forwarded many scenes in the past few weeks. It should however not be missed and since so many episodes have already aired, binge-watching this one would be a great idea for all the Madiha Imam fans out there. Anyone who isn’t already a fan is bound to become one after watching it ;)

Do share your thoughts about Mera Rab Waris if you are already watching it and do tune into it if you aren’t.

Khaas Episode 9 Story Review – Getting Better

Opening Thoughts – Interesting:

Ohkay so, this episode of Khaas was good as it showed the ray of hope making its way into Saba’s life in the form of Fakhir. Even though it is the beginning but it sure is going to have a huge impact in Saba’s life & that will be interesting to see. The direction of Khaas has surely improved & it is turning out to be a decent drama to tune to week after week.

Ammar Is Troubled But No One Can See:

I will say that Sarwat Nazeer deserves to be commended for coming up with such a difficult & complex character like Ammar. It is interesting to note how she has balanced his negativity with all of these positive traits that he carries on the surface because of which Saba finds it very hard to convey it to her family & friends about the issues she has with Ammar. It is like no one around Ammar can actually understand the problems he might be putting Saba through because on the surface he seems to be the most genuine, sincere, caring & harmless husband but the reality in front of Saba is totally different. It is because of the impression that Ammar has created in front of others, that Saba will have a hard time making everyone believe what he is actually like as no one will believe a word that she’d say. Since Ammar does so much for Saba financially like gifting her all those expensive gifts, he feels he is doing more than enough for Saba & she should be thankful to him for spoiling her with materialistic things. Ammar fails to see the problem in himself & that is why he feels that Saba is just ungrateful. It sure is commendable how the writer has created a balance in Ammar’s personality because it blurs all of the things that are wrong with him!

Ammar went out of the way for Faraz & the moment he dealt with everything, Faraz couldn’t stop praising Ammar, which means a liberal & supportive father like Faraz will also tell Saba to stay in this relationship. Faraz will obviously fail to see an issue with Ammar because of his impression management.

Saba has made up her mind that she is going to find a job & she landed herself an offer too but then she knows Ammar will give her a hard time. Ammar’s mother has started to speak in favour of Ammar quite a lot as even she thinks Saba doesn’t know how to make Ammar happy.

So, Fakhir got to meet Saba & he could clearly see & feel everything that Saba was going through. Fakhir being a sensitive person who is in touch with his emotions knew exactly what Ammar was putting Saba through, it was enough for Fakhir to meet them only once to understand their equation. Ammar continued to put Saba down in front of Fakhir & Saba was just infuriated. Fakhir left quite an impression on Saba, even though he didn’t try at all but considering the kind of situation Saba is in right now, even the subtlest of gestures are going to move her emotionally. Saba was taken aback by the sketch as it definitely came as a pleasant surprise. The very next unexpected meeting of Saba & Fakhir again made Saba realize that there was someone out there who could read her face & understand what she was going through. Fakhir didn’t try to impress Saba or anything, he was just being himself in front of her & that kind of forced Saba to think about him as well as the fact that he could actually understand her & her state of mind. I must say even though we all know that Saba & Faakhir will end up together, the way Faakhir made his way into Saba’s life was done convincingly. It could have looked forced or something but the writer made sure to not let that happen.

Closing Thoughts – Getting Better:

Overall, Khaas is surely getting better with each passing episode & because of more detailing the issues between Saba & Ammar are now coming across as serious issues & not self-created assumptions of Saba. Sanam Baloch at times seems too tired & lethargic, which actually adds more screen age to her. Also, I guess there was no need for Saba to dress up so much in the scene where she was only going to inform her friend about the job offer that she has got. I wonder how far she will take it when she will actually get the job. Anyways, all the actors are doing well. Also yes, my assumption was right, Nida likes Fakhir so I guess in the future we can totally see her turning into a typical nand when she will see Fakhir not reciprocating her feelings while being friendly with Saba. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Khaas.
