1. The Woman Makes You Want To Throw Up The Second She Opens Her Mouth! Mathira never talks sense, everything she has to say is in some way or the other associated with all the dirty thoughts that her mind is filled with. I watched the morning show in which Mathira and Ahsan were guests, one would expect Mathira to be a little decent in a morning show since it is a family affair. But Mathira does not know the meaning of decency. The things she did and said were unbelievable. So much so that Nida Yasir, the host of the show had to tell her that Ahsan Khan’s wife may be watching the show. She is height of indecency and vulgarity.
2. Her Gestures Are Cheapness Personified. Forget about Mathira opening her mouth, just mute the channel and look at this woman’s gestures and that alone will be enough to make you punch her. Flying kisses are like hellos to Mathira and it does not end there! I am sure all of you who have seen this woman on-screen know what I am talking about.
3. No One Wants To See Her On TV!Is there anyone out there who actually looks forward to watching Mathira on-screen? How many of you can watch her with your family? She is definitely not one of those people who leave you with a good feeling. Why should she be on-screen when no one wants to see her? The television is for the viewers so the people who organize these shows should keep people’s wishes in mind.
4. Attention Seekers Put Me Off. It is very obvious that Mathira does all of what she does to get attention. She is hungry for attention; she will resort to any measure to be in the paper or in the news. Why do the TV channels feel that they need to feed this desire of hers to get attention? People are more “curious” about such people than anything else so I think the channels also try to cash in on this curiosity.
5. She Gives Out The Wrong Message About Pakistani Celebrities And People.We have so many educated and decent celebrities who work extra hard to give Pakistan a good image. People like Mathira cancel out the efforts of such people because they give the wrong image of our industry and people. When someone is on television people will presume that it is normal for Pakistanis to watch such people on TV when actually it is not because people like Mathira are outcasts in our society who don’t belong or fit in anywhere.

Five Pakistani films will be screened at Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Film Festival in Qingdao, China.
Jawani Phir Nahi Ani, Punjab Nahi Jaungi, Parchi, Bin Roye and Chalay Thay Saath will be showcased at the first SCO Film Festival which opened in east China’s Shandong Province on Wednesday.
Actor Syra Shahroz whose film Chalay Thay Saath will be screened at the festival is among the Pakistani delegates attending the festival. The Pakistani delegation is led by Director External Publicity Wing Ambareen Jan.
According to sources in the Pakistani Embassy, Sultana Sidddiqui is among the panel consisting of members from each SCO member and observer country to select winners.
The festival will run for five days from June 13 to June 17 and will screen 55 movies from 12 countries, and hold more than 30 themed activities.
Wang Xiaohui, Executive Vice Minister of Publicity Department of CPC Central Committee and Head of State Film Administration of China, welcomed delegations from SCO member and observer states.
He termed the film festival an important cultural exchange event which shall enhance the people to people contacts between the SCO member states and shall help in building the community.
Xiaohui further said that China which produces over 700 films annually and has more than 55,000 cinema screens is one of the largest film industries worldwide.
China is willing to share its expertise with the film industries of SCO member states, he added.
The film festival is co-hosted by the State Film Administration and Shandong provincial government.
Drama serial Sabaat aired on HUM, the script of the drama was written by Kashif Anwar and Shahzad Kashmiri directed it. The star cast added to the appeal of the drama and as a result, it was one of the most-watched drama serials on HUM in the last season. The story of the drama revolved around two different families with completely different backgrounds and values. Miraal was the central character in the drama, played by Sarah Khan. Anaya was another leading lady who was a completely opposite character played by Mawra Hocane. This was Usman Mukhtar’s second appearance on television. It was also Ameer Gillani’s debut drama serial. Although Sabaat got a mixed response from the critics and the general public, it did have some positive messages which were knitted well in the storyline.

Supportive Parenting vs. Bad Parenting
This was one such message in the drama which was put forward in the best way possible. We had two completely different sets of parents. Anaya’s parents were warm, loving, and friendly but at the same time, they never spoiled her. They taught her the right values and she ended up being an independent and positive minded individual. Miraal’s parents were a completely different story altogether. Her father in particular spoiled her rotten primarily because he grew up yearning for the luxuries he could now easily afford. He always believed that loving your child meant giving them everything they wanted and letting them make all the decisions. He also did not treat both his children equally.
Miraal was the one who made all the decisions and her father never put his foot down to lay down the rules for her. While Anaya’s parents worked as a team, Miraal’s parents were constantly bickering and her mother was completely powerless. In this manner, the writer also gave the message that parenting is teamwork. Had Miraal’s father given her mother the respect and status she deserved, she could have guided him in the right direction. Anaya’s parents were the perfect example of supportive parents who were not wealthy but they had so much more to offer. Miraal’s parents, on the other hand, had so much money yet they failed to raise children who were responsible and positive individuals. By showing contrast, the writer made this message even more clear.
Children Learn From Their Parents
Parents are a role model for their children, a message which was shown in a subtle but convincing manner in Sabaat. Even though Hassan loved Anaya, he did not give her the kind of respect she deserved because his father never gave his mother the status she deserved. This is something he learned subconsciously from his father and therefore he repeated that behavior even though overtly he did not approve of it. Miraal also learned how to be controlling and selfish from her father who was perhaps her biggest ‘role model’. She always tried to control everyone around her and when she got married her approach was the same as her father’s approach in his marriage.
Anaya, on the other hand, had always seen how her parents had always given each other respect therefore when she got married she gave her husband and in-laws the same respect. She learned so many other good things from her parents. Her father always guided her in the right direction which played an important role in building up her strong and positive personality. Sometimes parents don’t realize how much they are teaching their children with their actions but this drama definitely shed some light on that angle.
Relationships Require Trust & Sacrifices
Hassan and Miraal both ended up being unhappy and their marriages did not work out because they were not willing to make the sacrifices that were needed to make their marriages work. Even though Hassan was so eager to make his marriage with Anaya work but when it actually came to proving whether he was up to the task or not, he turned out to be a complete disappointment. He simply failed to make the sacrifices and compromises which were needed. Hassan and Miraal both did not trust their partners. Hassan doubted Anaya even though he knew her so well and Miraal did not trust her husband enough to let him go back to work. By showing all this, the writer put forward the message that where there is a lack of trust and unwillingness to sacrifice even love for someone cannot save a relationship.
Turning Adversity Into Opportunity
The final episode of Sabaat showed that Anaya’s mother adopted an orphan after Anaya went back to live with her husband. Most often in Pakistani dramas widows are shown as helpless creatures that cannot even look after themselves and are dependent on others. Sabaat gave such a wonderful message by showing that a person with a positive mindset and the right approach can turn even adversity into an opportunity. Instead of complaining about her loneliness or relying on others, she gave her life new meaning by helping someone at the same time.
Similarly, when Anaya was going through the most difficult phase of her life, she decided to do something on her own and started her business instead of relying on someone else. Her strength helped her mother and she turned such an adverse situation in her favor by using her talent and intellect.
Women Should Speak Up Against Harassment
We don’t see women speaking up against workplace harassment in Pakistani dramas often. In fact, it is one of those topics which aren’t even touched in dramas. The way Anaya told her boss off openly and rejected his promotion was such a good message for all those working women who face such situations. Anaya could have left the job without this confrontation but this was such an important scene that showed how coward such harassers are and how important it is for women to have the courage to confront them.

Viewers are of the view that Huda and Shaheer deserved to be with each other. They are also questioning Huda for marrying Azmir. Fans are of the view that Huda lacks self respect and that’s why she chose a person like Azmir. One fan wrote, “it is extremely bad ending, they have shown all the injustices with the one family, Shaheer deserved happiness”. They also criticized the abrupt ending of the drama. No matter how hard we try not to discuss about the foreign content and the controversial realities attached to it, the idea is turning into a giant monster which is haunting the local drama-makers and now the filmmakers are not exempted here.
Turkish dramas have been airing with their urdu dubbing been done and from Ishq-e-Mamnu to Fatima Gul, have gathered quite an audience so far. Now that we see our film industry flourishing with the improved efforts made by celebrities and organizers, Turkish films will now be coming to Pakistan to add in the competition which our movies have to face from Indian and Hollywood movies. Turkish movie, ‘Ask Tesadüfleri Sever’, translated as Mohabbat ek Itefaq in Urdu will soon be making its way to the Pakistani cinemas. It is interesting that the especially dubbed movie will also hit the Indian and Bangladeshi cinemas soon.
Been released in in February 2011, the movie earned a huge business of 50 million USD and is one of the highest grossing Turkish films, with a first weekend hit of 1,779,485 USD, of the year and investors hope that the movie will now add up into the revenue with its global launch in different language.
The story of the movie revolves around the life of a famous actress who is into a strong relationship but the family of her love does not approve her profession at all. She then meets a photographer during one of her shoots who falls for her and that is the point where the trio love angle starts.
The upcoming project is a result of the mutual efforts of Pakistani production team-Sohail Productions and will be releasing in Pakistan this Eid-ul-Azha. There are 18 targeted cinemas in Pakistan which will support the Turkish movie that are mainly located in Karachi,Lahore and Rawalpindi.
The movie is half way done with its translation and voice recording and it is expected to see its promos releasing not only on E-media but in newspapers too.
It is yet difficult for me to judge this move because the idea would be facilitating the cinema houses anyway but it still creates a question about how will our local industry survive in the given circumstances! The release of Chennai Express ate up all the good for the Pakistani releases on Eid as it is, and now that this Turkish movie will release on coming Eid too, it is more like a threat to other expected Pakistani movies been scheduled to release on the occasion.
Turkish film ‘Mohabbat Ek Ittefaq’ has recently received the censor certificate from federal censor board. Preparation for its nationwide release are underway, and 17th January 2014 is announced as release date. Dubbed in Urdu it will be the first Turkish film ever to be released in Pakistan. While Turkish dramas are ruling the television screen and enjoy huge viewership, its still early to predict how cinema goers will respond to this new experiment of Turkish film in cinemas. Express media house is the official media group to promote this film.
It will be an interesting fact for readers that it is not the first time that a film from a country with majority Muslim population is releasing in Pakistan. Previously few Egyptian Arabic films have been released in Paksitan like Abida in 1990’s which were not much successful.

The film, Mohabbat Ek Ittifaq, is the Turkish blockbuster Ask Tesadulfleri Sever, which grossed over $50 million when it was released in Turkey in 2011. The film is being imported to Pakistan by Kayzee Enterprises, and has also been dubbed locally. The importers also own the rights to releasing the same version in Bangladesh and India.
The film is directed by Ömer Faruk Sorak, starring Mehmet Günsür and Belçim Bilgin Erdoğan as star crossed lovers whose lives are intertwined by a series of coincidence. The film was shot on location in Istanbul and Ankara, Turkey.

Sajal Aly and Ahad Raza Mir’s upcoming and the most anticipated project is “Dhoop Ki Deewar” which is a web series for Zee5. According to initial information, it is going to be a story of love across the borders. And like real life the characters will be sharing a love-hate relationship. Pakistani film industry has seen it’s worst in the last two decades but this decade not only brought the revival of mainstream cinema but will also be reviving our cinema at a more grass root level. Film-maker Jami Mahmood is producing a Sindhi feature film in Pakistan, which may possibly be the first since the recent rebirth of local cinema.
Titled Jugnu, it is directed by Ali Abbas Naqvi, an Iqra University faculty member. Speaking to The Express Tribune, Naqvi said the project initiated in 2013.
“I graduated from the University of Karachi in 2012. In 2013 we had a screening of thesis films in Aga Khan University, where Jami was part of the jury. After the screening, he approached us with an idea about a boy and his goat.”
The team then worked on the script for several years.
“We wrote 14 drafts and now the 15th one is the final, which we are currently shooting. We had to work on a lot of things and we realised that the city would be better off if it’s set in a rural environment. So, we spent a month in Moro to research and observe our surroundings and understand how people live to get a vibe. We decided to focus on issues that aren’t talked about a lot usually, such as weak electricity poles etc.”
He shared that the film also includes Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai’s vision.
“There is a local Sufi touch to the film and for that we have Saif Samejo as the music composer. It’s not finalised yet but there will be three or four songs in the film.”
Naqvi also pointed out that the film isn’t completely in Sindhi language and will have Urdu as well. The film-maker is inspired by Iranian films, especially Majid Majidi’s movies. He hopes to bring similar sensibilities to Jugnu.
“I just want to tell people a good story and this film has such a human story. I saw that when we were talking to people here, they related to it.”
Lack of cinemas is definitely a problem and Naqvi’s plan is to screen the movie in different festivals before he goes for a public screening. We wish team Jugnu good luck and hope to see our local cinema flourish even more.
