Unheroic Heroes

0

Gone are the days when we had perfect, flawless heroes whose actions and characteristics defined them as heroes. With influence of modern age and then the postmodern, like every conventional ideal and notion, the ideologies of an idealized hero were also questioned and we were presented we heroes who were ordinary individuals, who truly represented the masses instead of the privileged few but despite being ordinary they were and are worthy to be called heroes. Pakistani industry has had a bulk of ideal, perfect heroes, ordinary-perfect heroes, ordinary-flawed yet equally heroic heroes as well. However the heroes we encounter now seem more antiheroes, they aren’t necessarily villainous but lack of any constructive characteristics, persona and will categorizes them as sidekicks rather than heroes.

1. Pir Shahab (Aseer Zadi)

Pir Shahab not only lacks determination and intelligence, he is also kind of effeminate. Without giving a second thought to any issue which will obviously involve his abilities, intelligence and working of mind he blindly believes whatever he is told by anyone. For example Fatima told her Bhari Sarkar don’t want to go with him or even meet him, she left her house because of Maira etc. Shahab belived every single word without questioning or using his mind. First Amna’s accusation, then Pir Jalal told him Maira is unfaithful to him; he again decided not to use his intelligence which he obviously doesn’t have. Pir Shahab is perhaps the most inconsistent and unreliable hero. Not to mention his honeymoon with Maira where he seemed to having the time of the world, but suddenly took a 180 degree turn after the honeymoon was over and realized the looming danger which he somehow had forgotten for two days :P

2. Arham (Mujy Khuda Pe Yaqeen Hai)

Arham is more of a crybaby than hero, whose only purpose is complaining, searching for a shoulder to cry on rather than face the situation manly. Instead of remedying and letting go the past issues he is needlessly obsessed with them. Other than that he most of the times seems bewildered without any knowledge about anything whatsoever with sole purpose of complaining, shouting and crying like a woman.

3. Aaliyan (Asmaano Pe Hai Likha)

Another hero who has deficiencies of strong resolve, will, his view-point, the courage to stick to his point of view and above all self-respect. The way Natasha treats him and his response “baby, baby listen” further deteriorates his image rather than portraying him as kind hearted and sympathetic. Even the sympathetic aspect of his personality hardly invokes feelings for him. He too lacks the essential ingredients of a hero be even a flawed one.

Azfal (Pyaare Afzal) is a flawed individual yet his characteristics define him as one of the most endearing heroes now days. He is not kindhearted, weak-willed, contradictory and effeminate (till now) like the above mentioned ones, yet inspite of his failings and shortcomings he incurs awwws and awes from viewers.

Undisputed Vamps of The Industry!

0

Lately our dramas have started to revolve around all the negative women or as we can say, we are only coming across as women villains in our dramas these days. I agree that to make things a bit more realistic & relate-able, the script writers come up with such negative characters but there are certain actors who have taken the negativity to another level & I actually wish to see them playing a different role or playing such a character that doesn’t show them as a vamp & they are:

Saba Hameed:

I want Family Front wali Saba Hameed back!

Oh boy, now when I think of it, I can hardly recall any drama of her that I have seen lately in which she has played any role other than the negative one. It’s like she has signed it as a signature of hers that whatever the role may be, she wants THE MOST negative character of the lot. I remember her comic timing & expressions in Family Front, so we all know she is capable of playing some normal roles too. I so wish she just doesn’t waste her talent in playing the zalim saas of the decade & opt for some other roles too.

sh4252023

Sana Askari:

MEOWWWW!!!

Such a young & around half a decade old talent but she is wasting herself by already playing in the league of vamps. She can play the character of a happy go lucky girl or any other role but all I have seen her play is a role of a bratty little girl who is annoyed & knows how to annoy others around her especially her viewers by delivering her dialogues faster than a speed of light. She is a great actress & acting comes naturally to her but only if she understands & chooses some better characters *fingers crossed*.

sana

Seemi Pasha:

Mai Bigri Hui Ameer Aunty Hoon!

The tagline says it all. Clad in expensive dresses & high heels, endorsing a smokey kohl’ed eyes even in the wee hours of morning, she is one of those tip taap aunties who’re there to spoil other’s lives. It’s been ages since I saw her playing a non-negative role in which she isn’t running behind someone else’s wealth or isn’t teaching her daughter how to impress a rich guy. Choose wisely, live well aunty!

1510848_541663315932303_757406793_n

Urwa Hocane:

I’m the brat of the town!

She jumped into dramas & started fishing for negative roles right from the start. Not to mention that the negative image suited her because of her ticked-off expressions but I have yet to see her performance in which she ain’t playing a negative role. I know she has opted for roles in sitcoms too but she always chooses such characters in which she is unhappy so for that she comes across as a spoiled brat who is annoyed. I hope she opts for some other sort of characters as well because she needs to experiment in such early stages of her career.

urwa6

So, these were the vamps that we’ve seen frequenting our TV screens every now & then. Share what you feel about the list & feel free to add more names to the list too because your contribution means a lot. ;)

Cheers,

Underrated Actors Of The Industry!

0

Pakistani entertainment industry has come a long way; be it films or dramas with the influx of many artists. We have a lot of stars now who even have international influence which is a good sign for the industry’s progress. But there are many actors who despite of having a lot of talent are quite underrated as they not get projects and appreciation they deserve. Take a look at the list of some underrated stars of our industry:

Sajal Aly:

Underrated Actors Of The Industry!

Sajal has got beauty, style, glamour, the sense to carry herself and the most important TALENT. Sajal has been around for sometime now and she has impressed us countless times. Who can forget her performance in Nanhi which made people cry for her. Her performance in behadd was remarkable too where she played a 13 year possessive girl to perfection. Even the brat she played in Mohabbat Jaaye Bhaar Main was remarkable. These are just few mentions but Sajal never got that super-star treatment which her contemporaries Mahira and Mehwish does though she is equally talented and is also among the highest paid stars but yes she deserves more appreciation.

Imran Ashraf:

Underrated Actors Of The Industry!

This guy screams talent. He has always managed to get into the skin of every character he played. The sweet Dastageer from Dillagi was a sight to see. To be honest it was more fun to watch his scenes as compared to Humayun Saeed’s. The bad brother he played in Abro made us hate him and that is how fine an actor he is and he has got us mesmerized by his performance in Alif Allah aur Insaan. But he is extremely underrated. What we want to see him in are some really awesome projects and him playing the lead beacuse the guy can do it.

Hina Dilpazeer:

Underrated Actors Of The Industry!

Hina is hands down one of the most talented artists our industry has. She knows perfection and how to portray it. Hina has been doing a lot of comedy shows and telefilms. I think every Pakistani knows Momo and how Hina has portrayed the silliness of that character is beyond words. But why just comedy? Why not drama and some extremely serious characters? Its high time writers and directors realize that it would be a waste for the industry not to cast Hina in unique roles because she is capable to do it.

Adeel Hussain:

Underrated Actors Of The Industry!

He is handsome and I don’t have to explain it just look at the picture above. The main is a total package and has nearly never failed to impress the audience. The hopeless romantic in Mata e Jaan Hai Tu or a conflicted husband in Mora Piya, he knows how to pull off each character. He even played a perfect Mama’s boy in Ho Mann Jahan. But despite of his substantial work in both films and television he is severely underrated. Many actors who are not even half as good as him get more appreciation than he does.

Uzma Hassan:

Underrated Actors Of The Industry!

Uzma is a stunner. She made me fall in love with her during Ullu Baraye Farokht Nahin. Recently Sange Marmar aired and people hated her character; that is the talent of the woman to dig deep into the emotions of her audience. She is also making her film debut this year opposite Shaan Shahid in Arth-the destination; finally having roles that match her talent. Yes Uzma has done a lot of substantial roles and its high time she should get the level of appreciation she deserves.

Imran Aslam:

Underrated Actors Of The Industry!

Imran is a very expressive actor. He has a seriousness to his personality and his work. He will blow out the minds of his audience with his acting whenever he will come on screen. His acting stint in Sanjha even got him a nomination for Hum Awards. But do we see him in many projects? No! While actors like Yasir Hussain (no offence to him) are playing leads in movies Imran is not even seen as a lead for good projects. Why? No answer to that I guess.

Sonya Hussyn:

Underrated Actors Of The Industry!

Sonya is beautiful and glamourous. She has proved her mettle in different projects. Her role in Shikwa and Mere Humrahi were treat to watch. She made her film debut with Moor and even got a best actress nomination at ARY Film Awards but her career has not gotten the flight it must have taken. She surely deserves a spot on this list right now and I wish she gets off it soon.

Sami Khan:

Underrated Actors Of The Industry!

Sami Khan is around for years and has many good projects to his credit but he is not in the position as his other contemporaries are like Ahsan Khan and Mikal Zulfiqar. His role in Tau Dil Ka Kya Hua does look very different and maybe the directors will see his potential to do different kinds of roles rather than making him play love-struck bechara all the time.

Jinaan Hussain:

Underrated Actors Of The Industry!

Jinaan knows the craft of acting. She has played the roles from friend to the lead as well as vamp with perfection in different projects. She is around for sometime now but she never gets the lead roles although she is gorgeous and talented. She can make you hate her when she is playing a negative character like in Bashar Momin and can annoy the hell out of you like her role in Gul e Rana. She must be casted for some strong and leading characters as the girl is capable to do it.

This concludes my list for underrated actors. Who else do you think should be added in the list? Share your thoughts!

Unacceptable Trend of Forced Nikkahs in Pakistani Dramas

0

Nikkah is considered one of the most sacred bonds in any Muslim society. The terms and conditions for this nikkah to be valid are also quite clear to even those people who are not well educated or aware. There are definitely instances when in reality people make a mockery out of nikkah. Men and women sometimes are forced to enter into a nikkah in reality because of different reasons. This is however a really sensitive topic which most of the Pakistani drama writers have dealt with in order to create controversy. Nowadays, unfortunately, many of the producers want controversies so that they get attention. There are so many different channels churning out innumerable dramas therefore sometimes these controversies are used to get the attention of the viewers. At other times these nikkah’s are forced in an indirect way in order to start a specific track which eventually becomes the center of attention or a ‘love story’.

There are some Pakistani dramas such as Sammi and even Udaari which gave importance to a man and a woman’s consent in marriage. This consent cannot be forced on a girl or even a man and if it is then the validity of the nikkah is questionable. Since most of the Pakistani dramas deal with marital problems and they show women in particular as the victim, there have been plenty of forced nikkahs in Pakistani dramas. Every time we think that we have seen the worse, the producers and writers come up with something even more bizarre and unpleasant. The most distressing element of some of these dramas has been that these forced nikkahs were taken so lightly by the public and the makers. They were shown as normal marriages with some problems and eventually everything works out fine. If these forced nikkahs are actually shown as being invalid and problematic as was the case with Rehaii then it is perfectly fine but if they are used as ‘plot twists’ then there is nothing right about showing such situations.

Here are some of the most popular Pakistani dramas that did not only show such situations but also normalized forced nikkahs.

[lwptoc]

Gul-e-Rana

Gul-e-Rana starred some of the most sought-after actors of the industry and this drama was watched by millions. It was produced by not one but two of the biggest production houses in the country; MD and Six Sigma Productions. These big productions set such a bad precedent with this drama which was followed by so many in the upcoming drama. This drama was also the perfect example of how a problematic storyline can easily be ignored by people so long as they are getting to see their favorite stars in the drama. After Gul-e-Rana’s father dies, she moves into her uncle’s (father’s brother) house. The uncle’s son turns out to be a spoiled brat who wants to teach Gul-e-Rana a lesson after she insults him repeatedly. A few days after their interactions start, the drama took an ugly turn when Adeel forced Rana to enter into a nikkah with him. As if this was not enough, it was also shown that he gave her sleeping pills and raped her! She woke up not knowing what had happened but then realized she wasn’t wearing the clothes she was wearing last night! We still cannot fathom how the makers got away with this treachery.

Beqasoor

Beqasoor had so many females who were constantly shown suffering in the drama. As the title of the drama suggests it was all about people who suffer no reason. This drama took one tragic turn after the other and it banked heavily on the bechari aurat to garner sympathy and TRPs. In many dramas, we have witnessed greedy fathers who make their daughters enter into forced nikkahs but Beqasoor’s handling of this development was simply disgusting. This forced nikkah was used as a means for ‘character development’ and showing even more victimization of the women involved. As if this was not bad enough, the mother of the girl gave her poison so that she wouldn’t have to live with this older man she was forced to get married to.

Andaz-e-Sitam

The trend set by Gul-e-Rana became so ‘popular’ among the producers that Big Bang decided to come up with yet another story of kidnapping turned into nikkah! It is not only sad that these men are shown forcing women into these nikkahs but somehow the molvis involved also see nothing wrong with it. Since nikkah entails the presence of a religious head in order to ensure that it is not being forced upon someone, our producers are sending out the wrong message about religion as well by showing such scenarios. Although this development was shown as a ‘sitam’, the scene itself is a clear representation of what is wrong with such scenarios.

Muqaddar

Muqaddar is another drama with some of the best actors in the industry which has normalized forced nikkah. When an influential feudal and politician falls in love with a young girl, he first tries to persuade his family to make her his wife and when that doesn’t work, he kidnaps her. Even after the kidnapping this girl Raima is not willing to accept his ‘proposal’ for obvious reasons. Eventually, he threatens that he will kill his family members if she doesn’t go ahead with the nikkah and that is how both of them get married. What made matters worse was how Raima fell in love with the person who did all this to her and is now enjoying her position in her new home. Watching actors such as Faysal Qureshi and Madiha Imam playing the central characters in such a story is alarming.

Malal-e-Yaar

Malal-e-Yaar was another drama that showed a forced nikkah in a situation that was, unfortunately, a little too familiar as far as Pakistani dramas are concerned. It showed how a powerful feudal pressurizes a girl who was shown as strong-headed and fiery into entering in a nikkah with him even though she is in love with someone else and does everything in her power to get away from this nasty man. When the molvi refuses to do so, he is treated in the same manner and ultimately has to give in! While surely such men must pressurize women in this manner, showing such situations and then showing that such people actually stayed married till the end is ridiculous. Is such a nikkah even valid? Well, Pakistani drama writers definitely think so!!

Zebaish

This is another popular drama on television right now which has some of the most bizarre twists and turns to its credit! In the recent episode of Zebaish, Noshaba is forced to enter into a nikkah with her khala’s husband! The events which led to this were highly unconvincing. This latest ‘twist’ was shocking and in bad taste. The viewers couldn’t even have imagined that the drama will take such a turn. It is truly upsetting watching some of the most experienced actors of the industry going along with such a storyline. This drama has made a mockery of the institution of marriage like no other. Marriages and divorces are an everyday occurrence in the lives of the character sometimes out of necessity and at other times out of their own free will.

Khwaab Nagar Ki Shehzadi

The latest unfortunate trend in Pakistani dramas is that the men are shown as victims of forced nikkah as well. Most often a greedy woman from a low-income household is shown blackmailing the men into entering into a nikkah. Such situations are mind-boggling. Khwaab Nagar Ki Shehzadi sounds like a drama about a naive girl with big dreams but it is actually the story of a maid who has an extramarital affair with the man who she works for and then with the help of his family pressurized him into a nikkah. While the man is also at fault, not only was this nikkah done under extreme pressure and it the ugliest circumstance but this woman also gets the house and a lot of money because the man in question wants to save his ‘izzat’. This was another absurd scenario and something which just should not be shown on television. The entire scenario was forced and this forced nikkah could easily have been avoided but it was shown to sensationalize the story just as it was in all the other dramas on this list.

Waada

Waada was the drama that set the precedent of showing scenarios in which men are blackmailed into entering into nikkah. This was another story showing how the maid and the man of the house have an affair and ultimately the maid repeatedly threatens to kill herself in order to make this man marry her! It won’t be wrong to say that Khwaab Nagar Ki Shehzadi is majorly inspired by this drama. There are so many people out there who must be getting all kinds of wrong messages from such dramas and certainly, such scenes undermine the importance of nikkah.

Thora Sa Haq

Thora Sa Haq was another drama showing another angle of this forced nikkah scenario being repeatedly shown in Pakistani dramas. In this drama dying father of the girl begs his brother to take good care of his daughter after he dies and the brother asks his engaged son to enter into a nikkah with the girl there and then! The molvi is arranged at a time when there was a dire need for an ambulance! Instead of arranging that, the young man is forced to enter into a nikkah and the girl whose father is dying has to say qabool hei! This was hands down the most bizarre situation, it was inspired by Hamsafar but there was a big difference. While Asher was given some time to think about the situation and he wasn’t in love or engaged, the scenario here was different altogether.

Pakistani dramas are watched around the globe therefore showing such scenarios repeatedly in dramas sends the wrong message about Pakistani culture and society to all those people. Not only this, the idea that a girl can fall in love with and then live a happy life with someone who forced her into a nikkah is even worse. Most importantly, using such tracks to provide ‘entertainment’ is the most disappointing aspect.

What do you think about such forced nikkahs in Pakistani dramas? Do share your views.

Umm E Haniya Episodes 7&8 Review – Thriller

0

So we got the next two episodes of Umm e Haniya this week and one thing is really noticeable, this drama airs in two episodes every week and still manages to keep it happening and engrossing. Filler scenes are few and far between but story does move forward. There was a little too much moping by Rohan and too much conversation about keeping the abandoned baby home but over all it was still not a drag.

Another good thing is that till now, the drama is making sense. The people are acting in line with their characters and the script in written in a sane way. Even though the happenings are not very usual, like finding and keeping a lone baby and the fact that Romi’s fiancé was the person whose negligence caused Saba’s death, they are shown in a very realistic manner. The story is looking unusual and interesting but not outlandishly unbelievable. Rather, it is becoming more like a thriller. You really want to know how and when Rohan will find his daughter and how will Kamil and Roban’s mother get punished.

Umm E Haniya Episodes 7&8 Review - Thriller

Hashim Butt and Neelum Munir were again stars of the show. The father daughter duo is so endearing, so loving and so gentle that you can’t help falling in love with both of them. They couldn’t have done better than Hashim Butt in the character of a supportive and feminist father. He makes your heart melt and gives you such fatherly feel. He is just the best part of the whole play. More men like him are needed on mainstream media to show how men shoulda treat their families and daughters and even orphan and under privileged members of the society. No wonder his daughter cannot make herself abandon a helpless infant even though her own marriage and relationships are in danger because of that.

Umm E Haniya Episodes 7&8 Review - Thriller

Regarding the other two families, Kamil’s is your usual family next door with its flaws and trials. Kamil is not a bad person but he made a bad and selfish decision under crisis. It’s not like he deliberately killed Saba but his negligence in both driving and getting her prompt medical care lead to her death. It was good to see Rohan remembering and pursuing  this, and now this lost watch scenario is certainly adding thrilling and mysterious dimensions to the play. Kamil’s mother is also typical and orthodox but not evil because she was defending Romi in the face of her daughter Sundas’s accusation about the baby being Romi’s illegitimate child. Sundas, however is almost comical in her dislike and jealousy of Romi and the way she is handling the situation also shows that she is not a bad woman per se but cannot really digest the freedom and trust that Romi is given by her father and brother, which she likely never got.

Rohan’s family on the other hand is such negative energy. Only a woman like his father mother could have raised a daughter like Maham, wo does not have an ounce of sympathy for her broken and bruised brother who has just lost his wife and newborn baby. Such people make you nasueaous by their mere presence. On top of that, both Farah Shah and the girl playing Maham (please enlighten me with her name if you know) are not even doing a good job as actresses, so it’s very hard to understand their characters at any level, but the other two main families are compensating quite well for them.

Stay tuned to see where the next week’s episodes take the story..

Umm E Haniya Episodes 5&6 Review – Intense

0

So these episodes of Umm e Hainya lived up to the drama’s fast pace and good screen play. The actors still need to up their game, but the best part was the story moving forward. No filler scenes are added even though it airs in two back to back episodes every week.

Rohan and Saba’s story end right here with Saba tragically dying while they were enroute to airport. The scene where Saba dies was good in expression by both men but Yashma Gill failed to impress as the bruised and dying Saba. She has the exact same tear falling expression in all the scenes, whether it is expressing love to Rohan, being insulted by his mother, while taking her last breaths or even as she appears as Kamil’s guilty conscience to scare him. She really needs to improve her acting skills.

Umm E Haniya Episodes 5&6 Review - Intense

Daniyal Afzal and Wasim Trimzi were comparatively better in the most happening scene of the play to date and expressed their agonies and turmoils well. However, the way Daniyal Afzal as Rohan later reacted to Saba’s death was not impressive in the least.  He failed to generate any sympathy or emotion as the grieving husband. None whatsoever with his totally flat crying and mourning. Wasim Trimzi is a lot better as a genuinely good man who made a wrong decision in a fatal moment which cost someone her life and now that moment is coming back to haunt him repeatedly.

Farah Shah is a veteran actor who has given some very good performances but I don’t know if it’s the makeup or something, her face is also totally artificial and her character unrelatable as Rohan’s mother. She has bribed the nurse and left her newborn grand daughter on a cold bench in an isolated park, which in her opinion is better and more merciful than killing the infant.

Umm E Haniya Episodes 5&6 Review - Intense

Neelum Munir is still the star of the play, in every sense. She is the only one who seems to be performing wholeheartedly, along with her father played by Hashim Butt. She was very good as the confused and misunderstood Romi who is always blamed by her mother and bhabi, yet she sticks to her good intentions in a very endearing way. She seemed so naturally worried for the child. She has not failed to impress in a single episode so far.

What stuck out, however was the fact that the promos showed Romi getting that infant from the black bag on road side while this baby was in the park that she picked up. Don’t know if she will be the baby or she will find another one again, but that seems quite unlikely.

So now that Romi has unknowingly gotten Rohan’s daughter whom he thinks has died alongwith Saba, I cannot wait to see how this story will eventually full circle and how will Romi decide to raise that baby.

Umm E Haniya Episodes 3&4 Review – Wonderful

0

These two episodes were equally interesting as last two. The story is in a good pace, plot is interesting and the screen play is well executed. Even the supporting actors seemed to have upped their games except maybe Farah Shah. She was still extremely plastic and unrelatable. It’s not very usual that you see mothers like this in our society and a lot of people including me cannot imagine a mother so evil and unidimensionally negative, so it’s hard to see any depth in that character. Even Kamil’s mother is quite mean but she is quite typical in the sense that she wants her future bahu to be submissive and wants her son to keep a strict hold on her. These type of mothers are quite prevalent in our society so her character still does not seem flat.

Umm E Haniya Episodes 3&4 Review - Wonderful

Neelam Munir is still doing a very good job. Her character’s strength and positivity is shining throughout. Her dealing with that mean girl in the camp was also very sweet, though it did not turn out well for her. The plot was interesting that she could not reach the finals that she so hoped for, but the way it was executed was quite lame. Firtsly, how could no one see that that girl was behind Romi’s accident. Secondly, it was very inaccurate to say that muscular strain needs surgery. Lastly, how come no one of Romi’s family went to see her during the surgery and beyond, even though she was still in Pakistan and her mother was so upset and concerned about her,  but it did not occur to her to go and meet her daughter and be there for her while she was in the hospital.

Romi has already faced her fiance’s lack of support when he made her promise that she will come and marry him despite the results and it really hurt her because she had counted on his support for her game. Then that accident happened and I really felt for her character since she had reached there after so many hardships.

Umm E Haniya Episodes 3&4 Review - Wonderful

Rohan and Saba’s story took a very unexpected turn. A reader commented last time that they believe Hania will be Rohan’s daughter, but I was surprised that how could that happen. But now it seems very plausible since both Rohan and Saba were in a fatal accident and it looks from the promos that atleast Rohan did not survive and maybe Sba too. What I think is that Rohan’s mother will throw that little girl whom Romi will eventually find. It was sad to see the terrible accident since Rohan and Saba were so excitedly to go and start a new life in America after they were so scorned and ousted by Rohan’s family only because they had dared to take a stand for their love. I really liked the way Rohan stood up to his mother when he knew it was her fault in mistreating Saba.

All in all, Umm e Haniya is an interesting watch and is setting high standards for itself. Hope it continues to engross viewers like this throughout.

Umm E Haniya Episodes 1&2 Review – Interesting Start

0

So this week we saw this new drama called Umm E Haniya. It is certainly a promising one but had its flaws too. There are mainly three families at play here. First one is Romi’s who has a very supportive father played by Hashim Butt and a very typical and strict mother played by Rabia Noreen. Then there is her fiancé Kamil’s family who is also her bhabi’s brother. Wasim Trimzi is playing the role of Kamil. The third family is Rohan’s who is a close friend of Romi’s. Daniyal Afzal is playing Rohan and his deceased wealthy father had forcefully gotten him engaged to Rohan’s sister’s nand but he is in love with his secretary Saba. This has created a deep conflict between him and his mother and sister who are not willing to accept Saba at all.

Neelam Munir is a great choice for the protagonist of this story. She is giving perfect expressions for a girl who knows and respects her family values yet wishes to pursue her dreams as a cricketer. Thankfully, she is not like those liberal feminists who are rude and obnoxious to prove gender equality. She is a sweet girl who genuinely believes in the power of her dreams and wants to work hard for them. She does not want to let marriage and being a girl come in the way of her aspirations, and it was really encouraging to see her father and fiancé totally supportive of her decision despite her mother and future mother in law’s narrow mindedness. That’s all very realistic since it’s usually the women who are stopping other women from reaching their full potential.

Umm E Haniya Episodes 1&2 Review - Interesting Start

The other characters however are not very convincing. Because so many stories have started all at once, only Romi’s seem refreshing. Rohan and his family are all quite lame and so is Saba. The actors playing these roles also seem to be doing a halfhearted job. Despite the enormous wealth Maham and Rohan’s dad have left them, the siblings have not had too much of an upbringing, which is quite evident from the way their mother’s personality is shown. It was good to see Saba growing a spine in the later part of the play otherwise we would be left surprised what Rohan saw in her lovestruck eyes and quivering lips. Good for them to start a life away from the scornful and terribly mean Maham and her mother.

Umm E Haniya Episodes 1&2 Review - Interesting Start

The plot that Maham was immediately divorced because Rohan married Saba was outdated and done to death already. It seems all the families in the drama do watta satta since Kamil who is Romi’s fiancé is also her sister in law’s brother. But maybe they are showing this level of conservatism to show how Romi will take such a big decision to adopt that abandoned child in such orthodox environment.

All in all, it seemed an interesting play with an interesting start. Just hoping that the supporting cast will improve their acting in future episodes.
