The show has now taken quite a big turn and we saw some shocking developments and revelations in this episode. It is now clear to all of us why Dudi always compares Aaliyan with his mother because he has inherited all her traits. The kind-heartness and the willingness to help people are the traits he had adopted from his mother’s side (Sultan does not have an ounce of humanity anyways). She was so kind to Qudsiya when she came for to apply for the job and quickly appointed her when she realized that she needs the job badly. Now a new chapter has opened for Qudsiya and we well get to see her working for Shamsa. Both are actually related to each other through Aaliyan, but it is so ironic that they would not get to know about their relation anytime soon.
We know now that history is repeating itself. Previously it was Shamsa in place of Qudsiya and Rana in place of Natasha. Sultan had chosen Rana over Shamsa and left her, he had even lied to Aaliyan about her mother running away with someone else. This is the reason why Aaliyan gets so upset at the mention of his mother. Sultan had clearly refused to let Shamsa meet Aaliyan even when she begged him to let her, now what I want to see is whether Qudsiya will be the link to their reunion!
Aaliyan has been trying desperately to move on and look forward to his life with Natasha, but Qudsiya is still stuck somewhere at the back of his mind. He showed how possessive he was about her when she informed him about the offers she had been getting lately because of her temporary marital status. Another revelation for all of us in this episode was that Qudsiya is clearly in love with Aaliyan, and she herself is in denial. She would have not been so upset with her mother for going to Aaliyan’s and fighting for her rights if she was not in love with Aaliyan. She wants Aaliyan to recognize her as his wife otherwise she would not go back at any cost, but even she knows this would not happen. Aaliyan has decided to marry Natasha and whether he will really marry her or not is a twist that we all are waiting for!
Dudi was able to guess correctly about Qudsiya falling in love with Aaliyan which is the main reason why she does not want him to give her a divorce, but what surprised me the most was Aaliyan’s assumption that Qudsiya wanted to remain married to him for his name. That was a low blow! He should have at least recognized by now that Qudsiya is no gold digger. Her mother did not want Qudsiya’s marriage to end because of her own twisted views of what would happen later on. Qudsiya was right in being upset with her, she cares too much about what people will say when she should care about how Qudsiya will live in that big house which has no place for her.
A bit more was shown of Emad Irfani’s character in this episode. I was still, however, unable to understand his relationship with Shamsa. Hopefully in the coming episodes, their relation would be described more clearly. I was looking forward to Emad Irfani’s entry but I was a bit disappointed by his robotic dialogue delivery. And here we used to criticize Sheheryar for his weak dialogue delivery! Well, Sheheryar is way better than Emad in terms of dialogue delivery. It will now be interesting to see the track between Qudsiya and Shahnawaz now!
It will be interesting to see what happens in tonight’s episode. Will Natasha marry Aaliyan or will she leave him when she gets to know that he had not divorced Qudsiya yet? Tune in to tonight’s episode to find out!
Finally we’re heading towards the end of the masterpiece known as Mujhe Khuda Pe Yakeen Hai but I am glad that even by the end of the drama, the director didn’t fail to impress me with the fail of his direction. What shall I say man, I am totally in an awe of how creative a director can be!
Finally Shaiq got heed of the fact that Narmeen was up to some nasty & for that he for the first time thought like a Hero & tried to unlock the mystery but I am impressed with the ghunda who was on the phone, because at first he demanded Rs. 5 lacs & the very next moment he was worried about Narmeen’s depreciating cellular credit, WOW! Do they really make such caring goons these days?
Anyways, Samina Begum has returned & the conversation between her & Shakeel uncle was uh…what’s the word – BORINGGG. But I am amazed at a fact that when Samina Begum suggested that we would now tell Shaiq to go away & settle somewhere else with Narmeen, Shakeel uncle said ‘ye mere liye mushkil hoga’. So what was the speech for in the previous episode where he himself told Shaiq to go away & he refused? I am not sure what’s happening, are they normal or we’re abnormal or vice versa? Phew!
Areeba came back, as if we never knew that she would & even if she had to come back, why did she leave in the first place? Oh now I get it, it was to drag the drama till 20+ episodes. She comes back after listening to her friend’s suicidal speech which made me wonder that why would a girl like to die after she has spent a whole day doing makeup. Her friend looked like she was going for a suicide shopping with a huge bag hanging on her arm & in the meanwhile she stopped by Areeba’s to tell her that I’m off for the suicide adventure so I thought I’d let you know. Marna hai to maro, tayari aur itna rona pitna kyun? Acha, what’s funniest was after Areeba’s friend told her she was going to die & she left, Areeba didn’t even bother stopping her because she was too busy planning her return to Arham’s place. LOL! FAILLLLLL!
Narmeen who spoke to her mother first thing in the morning told her that she was being blackmailed for the amount of 5 lacs. But later when she called her mother again to tell her that Areeba’s back, her mother goes like ‘itni subha kaisay uth gai’ giving us the impression that it was the first call she made to her mother. Editing fail probably. Acha, what Areeba blabbered in front of Arham made so sense at all – jung, waar, mohabbat, yakeen, bla bla & I was like band karo appna ye Radio program. Anyways she goes around saying Narmeen challenged her that Arham won’t come for the breakfast but I am wondering when did it all happen? Narmeen was sulking in her room, Areeba was in her own so when did they both have an encounter in the morning? Plus not to forget the changing kurtas of Areeba didn’t help the situation either. I am amazed at how faarigh this family is, they only bother running towards the breakfast table to thoosofy the food & later they scurry into their rooms, then again they run towards the lunch table & once again back to their rooms then again they come out of their bills for the dinner & go to their rooms, that’s how a day goes like in this house.
Looking at Arham’s formal shoes, I always have a feeling of him being a busiest businessman but he never fails to amaze me that he dresses up in formal dress shirt & shoes to just roam around in the house, to cry at his fullest & to ask his wife for coffee. Acha, Areeba goes like ‘coffee aur pakore tayar hain’ which made me wonder what sort of a combo was that? It sounds like garlic bread & pulao or may be raita & chai? I feel they eat hideously that’s why they sound & act hideously too.
Shaiq is not at all a crack-pot he proved because he cracked a mystery with a help of his employee & ta-da it happens to be their wawela aunty Zainab. Narmeen is glad that she is going to get a perfect surprise for her birthday but a little does she know what surprise would it be. I hope he gifts her with a rat-killer or coopex so that at least we don’t get to hear her yelling once again because by the sight of the next preview I am sure there would be a lot of needless yelling & swearing. But I am hoping this would be the last episode, I hope so!
The play maintained its slow but steady pace in this episode too. Every episode has something new to offer and leaves me with something to look forward to. Ranjish Hi Sahi is not the story of two lead characters in any way but every character stands out and there is no confusion regarding their feelings or actions. Kamal’s confusion and helplessness, Rohail’s protective attitude, Bilquees’ heartbreak, Yumna’s vulnerability, Tooba’s love and care for her mother and Hiba’s rebellious nature; all have been portrayed excellently. It isn’t easy to take a play with such a storyline forward by keeping it engaging enough but the writer and director have managed to achieve that objective by breathing life in all of the characters and making the viewers feel for them. Also, appropriate casting makes a huge difference. The old and new actors are doing complete justice to their respective roles which adds to the joy of watching this show.
Tooba’s mother in law called the engagement off after finding out about Yumna’s nikkah and also due to Hiba’s disrespectful behavior. She felt no shame in telling Yumna that she wasn’t happy with the engagement in the first place and all she was looking for was an excuse. Kamal has taken an about turn; he is very clueless and the confidence he had before has completely disappeared. If he couldn’t deal with the aftermath of the bold step he took then he should not have made all those promises to Yumna. She obviously trusted him that is why she went ahead with the nikkah. Yumna seems more practical now; she is willing to take the heat and face the situation while Kamal is only running away from the situation.
Rohail will leave no stone unturned to ensure that the relationship between Yumna and his father ends. He is confident that he needs to do all that he is doing for his mother’s happiness. He also made it clear that most of the financial assets belonged to his mother, not that Yumna was ever interested in Kamal’s wealth.
My favorite scene from tonight’s episode had to be when Yumna decided to disclose the truth to Arsal’s mother. Her confidence was very impressive and what she said made a lot of sense. I wish Kamal Hassan could borrow some of that reasoning and confidence. I feel that all of a sudden there is a huge communication gap between Kamal and Yumna which if not bridged will only make matters worse.
The preview of the next episode was very alarming – will Yumna really die or was it just a bad dream? I really like Samiya Mumtaz in this role and would want to see more of her. Are you enjoying watching the show? Any predictions about what turn the story will take in the future episodes?
A very Happy New Year to all our readers. I hope that this year brings you joy, peace and happiness.
With the flourishment of Pakistani film industry in general, the image of the Pakistani film makers and directors have also significantly improved. Though there are once in a while that movies like Burning Faces and Waar are taken open hands by the international audience, there still seem some barriers for now. As per the latest reveal, Pakistan’s Karachi based filmmakers are now planning to come up with an international film which will have a multicast, including celebrities from different countries. It has been found that there are two upcoming movies which might have Shan Shahid as main lead. Qaisar Nizami is also found to be providing his next big project ‘Maalni’, an international market.
For more details, read the following piece of information.
Let us now see how far these filmmakers succeed in taking the Pakistani film industry to the next level of success.
Initially the dramas were novel based in Pakistani showbiz; it was many years later after the advent of Ptv that Haseena Moin penned down the first non-novel based script of Kiran Kahani. Novel based dramas never went out of business but they’ve never been in fashion like they are now from the past half-decade or so. Most of the female writers who are now ruling Pakistan television got fame from monthly Urdu digests and have slowly reached the electronic media. Faiza Iftikhar is also amongst these writers and a very sought after writer.
Faiza Iftikhar’s novels and dramas tend to identify and pinpoint the issues prevalent in our society. Be it the issue of remarriage of a widow, the dilemma and trauma of a rape victim or her take on the classic Akbari Asghari in contemporary setup etc, she has given different prospects and aspects of these issues. Roag, Akbari Asghari, Bilquees Kaur, Zindagi Dhoop Tum Ghana Saya, Aunn Zara, Ik Naye Cinderella are amongst her best plays which not only prove her a versatile writer but a writer who is able to understand and highlight the harsh realities of life. It is always the take of the writer on the subject matter that makes a difference; she has presented forth serious issues in gravely grim tone in Roag and Zindagi Dhoop Tum Ghana Saya and simultaneously debatable issues with comic overtones in Aunn Zara, Bilquees Kaur and Akbari Asghari. Her recent plays Khoya Khoya Chand and Meri Zindagi Hai Tu have been complete disappointments as compared to her earlier projects. Both clichéd plots have nothing new to offer.
Another notable aspect of her dramas is the strong depiction of women; the house full of women in AZ all of them had a distinct personality, complex, multifold personality of Bilquees Kaur, transformation of Haleema in Yahan Pyar Nahi Hai from a hesitant housewife to a woman who had the abilities and courage to face every challenge in life, straightforward Akbari (Akbari Asghari) and Mithu (Manchalay) give us a vibrant array of strong women. Her near-to-life portrayals of female characters are relatable, a source for catharsis for many women.
Similarly she has written some outstanding novels which luckily haven’t been dramatized yet, I might not remember the names of novels but she has produced certain unforgettable characters and most of the times drama makers fail to capture the essence of the characters. The only problem with FI’s dramas are her abrupt endings and digressions, somewhere towards the ending she starts giving more space to side characters or needlessly stretch the drama. Her sitcom Manchalay was thoroughly engaging and entertaining but as it got stretched it lost its charm. Despite her flaws she has all ingredients of a captivating and engaging writer.

Mona Lisa, that’s how we first knew her, is all busy with her busy schedules in India after her first major movie Murder 3. Mona has had been seen in Pakistani dramas previously where her acting didn’t go unnoticed. Starting her career as Rabia in ‘Rabia Zinda Rahegi’, she was quick to portray a similar role like that of Indian Kashish where she kept on marrying one after another in the drama. The drama did not only boosted ARY’s TRPs’ but also provided a doorway to success to Mona.
The actress will now be seen in an upcoming Pakistani film ‘Saltanat’, which is directed by Syed Faisal Bukhari whereas the production has been done by Aslam Bbhatti. What makes this project different this time is its cast which comprises of A-class celebrities of Pakistan while some of the Indian faces will too be seen in the film.
The movie is now at its final stage and will soon hit the theatres in 2014. Sara left Pakistan after the completion of this film for India.
Let us now see how far the film goes and how much appreciation Sara will earn from her own people.
Despite being the iconic Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s protégé, Rahat seems to almost always shy away from the spotlight. With minimal interviews to his name and an aura of mystery surrounding Rahat, We have caught up with the playback singer.
“It’s true that I have chosen to be relatively reserved with the media but it is something which is purely unintentional,” says Rahat, pointing to his busy schedule. “This is something I wish to change, and as an ambassador of my country, I believe people need to know more about the activities undertaken by their fellow countrymen.”
When it comes to creating music, the maestro admits that he needs to work in solitude. “I like to work in an environment that is secluded and allows me to concentrate on my music,” he says about his swanky farmhouse on Bedian Road (or to him, his humble abode), which has been transformed into an extensive music studio. “I am able to control the quality of the sound I record and ensure that my fans get only the best — something they expect from me.” The title song for Ishq-e-Mamnu was recorded there and he is also working on his upcoming music album, which is scheduled to release by year end.
“Bollywood gave me the chance to collaborate with the industry’s best composers,” says Rahat defending the switch he made. “And I embraced the transition well. For me, playback singing has been wonderful in terms of my own growth.” He feels the industry provides musicians with opportunities to learn as well as helps them establish a wider presence and name for themselves in the music arena.
While traditionalists didn’t hold back in making any comparisons when he ‘turned his back’ on his qawwal origins, Rahat feels it was inevitable and people were bound to talk. But the singer remains adamant on growing as an artist, experimenting and trying out different projects. “I starting singing qawwali at the age of 15 with my [uncle] Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan,” he recollects. “And as I have grown as an individual, I have also wanted to grow as a professional and diversify. I believe in good music, whatever the genre.”
Commenting on the current situation of the Pakistani film industry, Rahat feels it never reached great heights but is hopeful that things can change if investments are made. “Right now, our major hurdle is not that we lack talent but it’s that we don’t have the resources to make good quality motion pictures,” he sighs. “We need huge investments. I wish our government gives this important industry its due attention, and sets aside a sizeable budget for arts and entertainment.”
Apart from playback singing, for the local industry and Bollywood, Rahat is keen on releasing his own music album. “When I play and produce my own music, it provides me with a unique sense of fulfillment unlike any other. Artists shouldn’t just sing for others but should also produce their own music,” he says.
However, it will be released by an Indian company as he hasn’t been able to find himself a suitable distributor in Pakistan. “There was a trend when artists would launch their own albums in Pakistan instead of singing for others, but that seems to have become obsolete,” he regrets.

So, this was the final week of Auditions & the destination was Karachi. Both the episodes of this week were dedicated to the Karachi auditions where first episode focused more on the serious singers & the second episode had fun moments.
There were plenty of voices that were impressive but I am not quite sure of how much the judges can pass a statement on a contestant’s personality? I have seen other Idols too & there are a million people who are simple or don’t follow the latest trends but they never get the pointers by the judges for how they should look & what they must do because the judges just focus more on the singing but seems like Pakistani judges are focusing a lot more on the appearances & when not impressed by anyone, they do not hold back in giving out their verdicts on how one should act or react, be it on how much they weigh or how they look. The judges must understand that there are a million people out there who do not pay attention to artificialities so for that they should & they must be respected.
I must say that the Karachi girls were really impressive as far as the singing was concerned because so many of them got the golden tickets. A few of the boys performed really really well too. Those who got the golden tickets in Karachi Auditions were Midhat Hidayat, Sajid Abbas, Ghazal Ali, Fizza Javed, Ali Asad, Nazia Ashraf, Abdul Rafay, Shahid Ali Sonu, Arsalan Amin, Rosemary & Dr. Mohammad Usman.
Midhat Hidayat was the one who sang Runa Laila’s ‘Katay Na Katay Ray’, in comparison to her happy-go-lucky personality she sang absolutely brilliant but I was not a fan of Hadiqa’s comment on her which stated that she needs to look ‘sane’ to be on the stage. She was just being herself & considering the fact that she is just a matric student, I found her personality absolutely amazing. She was funny, witty & even if we forget the rest, she knew her game of singing so I don’t think being on the judges seat, you get the right to pass a judgement on how a person actually is. They should direct their criticism on the singing solely. Gazal Ali sounded really really versatile & she impressed the judges with two of the different songs that she sang but once again Hadiqa asked about why she had no makeup on, I liked when Ali Azmat supported her saying that it doesn’t matter because what does is her singing. Abdul Rafay who’s only 17 had a mature voice & was brilliant. Shahid Ali Sonu comes from a family that has a few stars who’ve excelled in the field of music & for that reason even though the judges judged him a bit too keenly, he didn’t fail to impress them with his effortless singing. All those who got the tickets were well deserving. I was glad to know that Dr. Mohammad Usman once again appeared in the auditions & earned himself a ticket this time because he was first rejected in Multan auditions.
A few other contestants came who thought they sang well but got the opposite remarks. Madiha Shah was one girl who looked really impressive & someone who took her singing seriously but the moment she began singing it was a clear No No. Shahab Hussain came from a singing group & he had already been performing but like the judges said he lacked a lot of expression & sounded one-dimensional. Jana Nazzreth came with a personality which made us believe that she would be a perfect singer but sadly she needed a lot of improvement. Mehek Rafique deserves a special mention here for her ‘tabla’ prowess. She was absolutely marvellous but sadly her singing wasn’t that impressive, even though she had a know how of the basics, she still couldn’t make it to the next round. So best of luck to her & I hope she does well in her genre.
I enjoyed Ali Azmat’s version of the old Hindi classic which he changed to ‘Chura liya hai tumne jo kukkar, kukri nahi chuarana sanam’. LOL! We even saw two wanna be Shahrukh Khans. Babu & Shahrukh Shahnoor who were ridiculously bad at singing but still had the guts to perform.
My favorites from Karachi auditions are Midhat Hidayat, Ghazal Ali & Abdul Rafay.
But the one who I found the best among all the other contestants & like they say ‘save the best for the last’, I am definitely rooting for 15 y/o Rosemary, I am glad that they put her part at the end of the whole audition round because she left a great great great impression. She was a trained singer & she tops all other favorites of mine. I am definitely eyeing her & wish her good luck because she was absolutely impressive, versatile & almost perfect at such a young age. I hope she makes it to the top 3.
Good luck to all the other contestants too & now let the real game begin!
Spare me if I cross the limits in my fury while targeting the writers because I am fed up with the trend of how the females are being portrayed in a negative light in all our dramas. I really actually want to know what has gone into the writers these days for which they are just scrutinizing the image of Women in our dramas. I agree that the women & females have always been targeted in a comical sense & there are a million jokes that are dedicated for this cause but now it is absolutely getting tedious to see the so-called writers bringing the females in a negative light.
I am writing this article at the year end because I want us all to re-call how many negative characters we have come across in the year 2013. From start till the end, all I have just seen is a woman treated as a commodity in our dramas which can be used & thrown. A million times an idea has been established that a woman can only be negative & nothing else. If she’s a mother-in-law she would be a woman hitler, if she is a mother herself, she is going to be biased, if she is a wife, she’s either characterless or a gold-digger, if she’s a sister most likely either she would be a husband-snatcher or would be drooling over the luxuries of your life, if she is a daughter, she would hook her father up with her young cute friends, I mean seriously!
I am literally sick of these writers who unfortunately happen to be women themselves but I am ashamed of their mentalities to conceive of such such bad characters which only emphasize that women are an insult to the society. I am amazed that the female writers had nothing, absolutely nothing good to write about women themselves, it shows how SHALLOW & how ashamed they are being a woman themselves because if they were a tinsy bit proud about the fact, they wouldn’t be coming up with such hideous characters & would never assassin females with their imaginative negativity.
I am amazed at the current trend where any guy in a drama can accuse a girl of having an intimate relation with him, any guy can come & claim that a girl who ain’t married to him is carrying his child & the whole world would support the guy in stead of a girl. I am speaking about the dramas that I have watched & it makes me wonder where is the morality of our writers gone? Maira of Aseer Zadi, Haniya of Mere Humrahi are blamed to be carrying a child of someone other than their husbands, Gaiti in Rishte Kuch Adhoore Se got preggers with a guy to whom she wasn’t technically & legally married. Mina of Kadurat absolutely was the worst character I saw this year where she actually victimized her father & accused him of – we all know what. I mean c’mon, give me a break. All the writers who are coming up with such pathetic ideas should literally either stop writing or should be ashamed of their sick mentalities.
Ohkay, there are negative characters & we all come across some of those characters in our real lives too, which may seem relate-able in our dramas but is it really important to show that a woman would either be a satan-like human or else she would be such a weakling where anyone would come & target her or accuse her of immorality.
I wish that these writers would STOP using the gender in discussion for their stories. IF they can not come up with positive & balanced characters or if they have nothing good to write about women, they shouldn’t bother using their bird-like brains because it literally shows their sick mentalities & nothing else.
Write something positive about women you so-called writers & if you can’t so then just SHUT IT!

Khoobsorat nain naqsh ki haamil basalayehat adakaara maya ali nay nihayat kam waqt mein apni salayehaton ka loha manwaya hai aur aaj taqreeban har doosray dramay mein yeh khoobsorat adakara nazar aati hai.
Maya ali nay nawai waqt ko diye gaye interview mein kaha kay mein nay apna pehla audition Pakistan television kay liye diya to nakaam ho gayee leikin is nakaami ko mein nay ser per sawaar nahin kiya aur musalsal kaam ki justuju mein lagi rahi jab jab jahan jahan moqa mila audition diya jab mera audition clear huwa to bay ikhtiyaar meri aankhain chhalak pareen then. Meri khosh qismati hai kay mujhey achi team kaay saath kaam karnay kaa moqa mila hai. Jahan tak filmon mein kaam karnay ki baat hai to mein zaroor karon gee lekin shirt yeh hai kay kirdaar mein adakaari dikhhnay ki bohat zyada gunjayesh mojood ho. Kirdaar ko sign kartay waqt jaldbaazi say kaam nahin leti.
Tamam zaroori amoor per tawajah denay kay baad kissi faislay per phanchti hoon aik sawal kaay jawab nay kahan kay hamaray tamam adakaa hi bohat acchay hain lekin sanam balcoh, ahsan khan aur faysal qureshi kaay sath kaam kary kay bohat accha lagta hai aur bohat kucch seekhnay ko milta hai. Faisal qureshi to adakaari kaay muamlay mein school ki haisiyat rakhhtay hain, unki adakaari mein bohat infradiyat hoti hai.

The year 2013 was a great year for newcomers in Pakistani entertainment industry. We saw many new faces on our television screens as well as on the ramp. This list contains the names of those female models and actresses who gained recognition in the year 2013 not only because of their good looks but also because they are very talented. There are many other females in our showbiz industry who are very attractive but this list if for the year 2013 so we decided to focus on new faces rather than adding only those which were already there in the list last year.
10: Sidra Batool
Sidra Batool started her acting career with the play Yeh Zindagi Hai. Since then she has worked with many prominent producers. She is an actor and a model. She has a very cute face and is full of confidence.
9: Urwa Hocane
Urwa Hocane is talented, well groomed and attractive. She started her career as a VJ but was seen in many plays in 2013. She has the looks and the talent that will take her far.
8. Sana Javed
Sana Javed is another new face which we saw quite a lot of this year. She has sweet and innocent looks that are very appealing. This list would be incomplete without her.
7. Sajjal Ali
The phrase “She came, she saw, she conquered” fits perfectly on this young lady. At a very young age she has managed to make a very important place for herself in the industry. Sajjal Ali has the perfect features and she looks great in Western and Eastern outfits.
6. Ayza Khan
Yes, Ayza Khan was in our list last year too but she is one person who deserves to be in this list again. Ayza is a natural beauty who looks great with even a little make up.
5. Mawra Hocane
Mawra Hocane is pretty and stylish. She has a style all of her own which makes her stand out. She looks charming in little make up and drop dead gorgeous in red lipstick.
4. Arij Fatyma
Arij Fatyma has to be one of the prettiest actresses of the new lot. She is delicate and has a very pleasant face. No one can argue with the fact that she is also very talented.
3. Sanam Jung
Sanam Jung is a sweetheart, she has the most expressive eyes and a face that can make anyone’s day. She also has the most beautiful smile. She is third on our list because she has the kind of face that can win a million hearts.
2. Ayyan Ali
Ayyan Ali is another model who was on our list last year and we think that she deserves to be in the top three this year as well. She looks great no matter what she wears and is also very talented.
1. Aisha Linnea
Aisha Linnea is beauty personified. She is cute, pretty, attractive and stylish, all at the same time.
Versatility is what an artist needs to show in his acting career and when it comes to doing a negative role on screen, there are a very few who justify with the needs of the given role. Though we have some veteran actors like Saba Qamar, Noman Aijaz, Humayun Saeed, Saba Hameed, Ayesha Khan and Sanam Saeed who do equally well in negative roles, but there are some actors who look better off doing negative roles. Here are five of them in my list. Have a look!
Shamoon Abbasi
I always considered him as a good husband, a good father, a professional director and-yes, a negative character. Despite of his resemblance to Akshay Kumar, Shamoon has always managed to portray the bad man on screen pretty well. Polishing his overall persona as a villain of the industry, Waar-the movie has further contributed its share. For me, Shamoon looks better in a negative role.
Rashid Farooqi
He is a jack of all trades, for sure. Rashid has been my favorite since my childhood and the only reason for this likeness is his absolutely amazing acting. Rashid has had been proving himself as a wonderful actor by doing different roles but he can easily be personified for a negative role because he is really good at it. What do you say?
Atiqa Odho
The Sitaara or ‘Sitara aur Mehru-Nisa’ started her career as a ‘good woman’ on screen. For her eyes and acting, she earned quick prominence in the drama industry but for reasons undefined, she seemed to disappear from screen, probably to give some boost to her political career initially. Her comeback, however, was even more powerful and her negativity in Humsafar opened up new chapters in her acting career. For me, Atiqa seems better in negative roles.
Sadia Imam
Sadia Imam is one of those few actresses who started their career from PTV and succeeded in surviving in the race of private channels too. Audience love to watch her and this is what keeps her on screen. I like anything she does but her acting in drama serial Ijazat was completely flawless. I would like to see her more in negative roles because I think, we have some better actresses available for positive roles these days.
Sajid Hasan
He is a man I love to watch the most. Whether it is comedy, drama, thrill or anything, he knows every flavor of it completely. Sajid has been doing some negative roles lately, like, Thori si wafa chahie, Mera Naseeb and Manjali, and truly speaking, I have never found him this impressive ever. He is too good in the roles of strict father, disloyal husband and an unloving soul. However, there are no second thoughts that Sajid Hasan looks only good in negative roles, in fact, he can make look any character good.
So these were 5 of my favorite celebrities whom I love to watch as villains in our dramas, share yours; let us see how many of your do not agree with this list at all.
The year 2013 has had been a lucky one for the drama industry where the audience kept enjoying back2back hit drama serials on Hum TV and ARY Digital, while Geo TV strived to earn its lost significance in the drama industry. With dramas like ‘Asmaano Par Likha’, Geo, now seems to pay more attention towards the local content and following its new strategy, the channel will soon launch a new drama serial ‘Do Qadam Door Thay’ this December.
Been written by Kifayat Rodaini, the drama has been directed by Mohsin Mirza and comes under the production of an Ironline Productions & KK Ent Play. The cast of the drama includes some A-class actors like Sami Khan, Ayeza Khan, Sana Khan and Aly Khan. Based on the social tragic plot, it is easy to predict that this upcoming project might create a decent viewership.
The promos of the serial are already out. See promos here.
The aftermath of the big accusation was tragic as expected and Haaniyah lost one of the most important people in her life. Her father was unable to bear the doom of his daughter and left the world with a heavy heart. He had the guilt that he had made the wrong decision of choosing Ahmed for her who did not even stand up for her. He had so much faith in Ahmed just like Haaniyah, but he turned out to be a huge disappointment for both of them. .
What irked me the most was why nobody said anything to Ahad! If they thought the accusations were true, then Ahad was as guilty as Haaniyah. Haaniyah was still an outsider, but Ahad was Ahmed’s real brother. His mother’s so called anger just made me roll my eyes; she should have given him a tight slap instead. I wish she had given one in his childhood then he would have never turned out to be such a selfish person without any morals. Ahmed’s anger towards her was completely justified. Ahad’s father had never been happy with him in the first place so he simply showed him the door, but as usual her mother did not let him leave.
I was waiting for Ahmed’s reaction who had shown his anger just by giving Ahad the cold treatment. His anger was brewing up for a long time, and he finally showed his anger when Ahad made the demand that he divorce Haaniyah so that he can marry her. He just crossed his limits this time, and got a well-deserved tight slap from Ahmed. The scene was definitely worth a round of applause! Fahad Mustafa was absolutely superb in this scene!
Ahmed made it absolutely clear that he would not leave Haaniyah under any condition, unless she herself asks for a divorce. He was not ready to give yet another sacrifice for Ahad’s sake. Deep down Ahmed has doubt about the accusations but he had chosen to believe his family over Haaniyah. He had believed the facts but his conscience pricked when he recalled the scene where Haaniyah accused him and his family for being the murderers of her father.
I absolutely loved the bonding between Haaniyah’s family members. They were all looking out for each other. Ahsan had now taken the responsibility of the whole family and I loved the way he consoled both his mother and Haaniyah. Haaniyah was scared for the future of her baby but Ahsan gave her the assurance that he is always there for her. They had showed the sister-brother bonding in the beginning of the show and I had loved it, it was good to see their bonding again.
The biggest twist was the drastic change in Samina! She had finally realized the seriousness of the situation and that Ahsan was really going to divorce her this time. She tried to improve herself and now she is playing the role of the good daughter-in-law. Her breakdown in front of Ahsan was the first scene of Samina’s that I actually liked. For a change I did not switch the channel during her scenes. The whole family was shocked to see the new and improved Samina! At least we would not get to hear her screeching voice anymore!
After so much of drama, Ahmed finally got to know that Haaniyah was innocent when he overheard Zehra and Ahad’s conversation. The humsafar background playing in the background just ruined the scene for me though. Throughout the show, they were trying to re-create Humsafar’s magic but their attempts were completely futile. No doubt the chemistry between the leads was great, but the pace of the story was slow throughout the show!
Zehra surely got what she deserved! She had ruined her brother’s life for her own selfish motives. Ahmed will go and apologize to Haaniyah but she is not going to forgive him anytime soon. The divorce papers were the answer to his apology.
Oh, and a special mention for the promo scene, it turned out to be Ahmed’s dream!
Sorry for the extremely late review! Do share your views about the episodes.
Turkish film ‘Mohabbat Ek Ittefaq’ has recently received the censor certificate from federal censor board. Preparation for its nationwide release are underway, and 17th January 2014 is announced as release date. Dubbed in Urdu it will be the first Turkish film ever to be released in Pakistan. While Turkish dramas are ruling the television screen and enjoy huge viewership, its still early to predict how cinema goers will respond to this new experiment of Turkish film in cinemas. Express media house is the official media group to promote this film.
It will be an interesting fact for readers that it is not the first time that a film from a country with majority Muslim population is releasing in Pakistan. Previously few Egyptian Arabic films have been released in Paksitan like Abida in 1990’s which were not much successful.
About Mohabbat Ek Ittifaq
The film, Mohabbat Ek Ittifaq, is the Turkish blockbuster Ask Tesadulfleri Sever, which grossed over $50 million when it was released in Turkey in 2011. And who can with-go while mentioning realities shows, without mentioning BIG BOSS. BIG BOSS 7 is no doubt the most anticipated reality shows and quite popular among Pakistani masses.
After months of entertainment, Bigg Boss 7 finally came to a grand end on Saturday (28-12-2013). Reality TV star Gauhar Khan is the winner of Colors’ reality show Bigg Boss 7. She was one of the strongest contenders in the show right from the beginning.
Gauhar, who won Rs.50 lakh in cash and a trophy, stayed in the house for 104 days.
“I thank family for support. I am big fan of the show. I did not expect to come so far…till the finale,” said Gauhar, who had won critical acclaim for her role in the film ‘Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year’ (2009).
Before the winner was announced, Gauhar’s mother Razia Zafar Khan said on the stage, “Apni bacchchi par naaz hai mujhe. Woh badi samajhdaari aur sachchai se aage badi hai”.
Tanishaa’s mother Tanuja who was also present on the occassion, she said, “Main roz dekhti thi show. Jab woh roti thi to main bhi roti thi.”
Before the winner was announced Tauja had said, ” I am very proud of my daughter. According to me the way she has conducted herself, she has won in my eyes.”
Interestingly host Salman Khan said Gauhar and Tanishaa both always stood opposite each other throughout the show. They almost become captains of two rival groups within the house.
Salman joked and said I dont have to tell you who were the vice captain of the two rival groups in the house.
Gauhar, 32, is not new to the world of reality shows having participated in shows like ‘Khan Sisters’ and ‘Jhalak Dikhla Jaa’. Tanishaa was the second runner up.
Gauhar proved to be the toughest contestant to beat during any task, Ajaz has been an entertainer to the audience throughout his stay. Tanishaa has been a loyal friend, and Sangram’s positive nature was loved by the audience.
The grand finale was held at Lonavala, a hill station near Mumbai, where the “Bigg Boss” house was put up.
This is the fourth consecutive season that a woman has been crowned the winner after Shweta Tiwari, Juhi Parmaar and Urvashi Dholakia winning the fourth, fifth and sixth seasons respectively.
The seventh season of the popular reality show went on air on September 15 on Colors. It started with 14 celebrities, and later, five additional celebrities made wild card entries at different points during its run.
First of all I have nothing against the actors mentioned below except they are actors who cannot act at all yet they are not only surviving in the industry rather thriving which consequently leaves question mark on the reasons behind their thriving.
Mahnoor Baloch– First time I became familiar with her was in Yeh Zindagi but ironically I remember the drama because of Nauman Ijaz and Qaisar Khan Nizamani instead of Mahnoor Baloch. Almost a decade and half has passed since then but she continues to be what she was without any improvement. She seems to be a pretty statue carved from stone, devoid of expressions both facial and vocal. She seems kind of disinterested and detached from surroundings, her dialogue delivery is usually impassive lacking intonation. She still manages to appear in dramas quite frequently and that too in lead roles drastically inappropriate to her age. Though she was praised a lot for Talafi, I disagree. Kabi Kabi Pyar Mein is memorable among her works but that too mainly because of Humayun Saeed and Adnan Siddiqui.
Mikaal Zulfiqar– I was an ardent fan of MZ until I saw his Bollywood flick You Are My Jaan (plagiarized version of Pretty Woman); I took great pains in downloading that movie only for MZ. Mikal hasn’t looked more handsome before; a perfectly created character from a painting but the moment he opened his mouth poof- the magic vanished. I still am his fan but not of his acting anymore obviously. The reason behind his grabbing a lot many central roles is possibly his killing looks.
Mehreen Raheel– Mehreen Raheel has bagged many important roles in her career but despite inheriting acting from her mother and despite her beauty she is a mediocre actress. Usually she is given characters where she has to fill the place of a stylish, beautifully dressed individual e.g. MMBZ, Ashk, ZGH, Mastana Mahi. She did well in Dastaan but in rest of her projects her acting has been monotonous and unimpressive. She is more suitable for ramp (despite her height) and Tvcs where she outshines others.
Sheikh Siblings- Both Momal Sheikh and Shahzad Sheikh aren’t impressive actors unlike their father. Again both of them have grabbed many lead roles in their short careers in spite of the below average acting, seriously do they even deserve side characters let alone the lead ones? They both aren’t exceptional beauties like the above mentioned celebs which make one wonder the reason behind their “success”. Oh they are the Sheikh siblings, rings more than enough bells!
Shehryar Munawar Siddiqui– The new hottie of the showbiz, his fans are going to flay me to death for including him in this list but honestly he isn’t much of an actor. All he has is good looks and a good nature. ZGH, Tanhaiyaan Naye Silsilay, Kahi Un Kahi and now Asmano Pe Likha; same expressions and dialogue delivery doesn’t show much hope for improvement.
Other than these Urwa Tul Wusqa, Sana Akari, Shehroz Sabswari, Mira Sethi and Maya Ali are clearly getting more than they deserve. What it can be if not talent, looks or intercession/cronyism, it is upon the readers to decide!
P.S. you might not agree with me, the article is after all subjective.

It was by sheer luck that Hina landed the outstanding role of Saeeda in Burnes Road ki Nilofer written by Fasih Bari Khan, after challenging the director Mazhar Moin to find someone better than her to give depth to the character.
“I knew I could do the role well. I am grateful to Mazhar Moin for putting so much trust in me. He cast me opposite TV veteran Abid Ali which was an honour for a newcomer like me” she said.
After Burnes Road ki Nilofer went on air, Hina’s phone rang incessantly throughout the night with offers and appreciation.
“When something new and fresh goes on air and is loved by all who see it, then it gives great pleasure”
While wanting to start an acting career, Hina set off on the grueling task of visiting TV channels to look for work with no contacts but just determination and talent
“I have nothing against people who didn’t give me a break. As a newcomer, it is difficult to prove one’s talent and people here don’t have the time for evaluation. Maybe what our media lacks is the mature, seasoned eye that can spot talent a mile away.”
“We are in a race against time, and very little time is spent on looking for the right person to do the job. Even if people come up to me and say I can act very well, please get me a role, I would be too busy to find anything suitable for them. Likewise, those working for TV channels are too busy”
After Burnes Road ki Nilofer and the unprecedented success, offers and opportunities, there’s been no looking back for her. Madam Rizwana and Baby Shabana, Bichhu Phuppi and Veena, to name just a few, are just some of Hina’s best work on television. She’s accused of taking all the choicest roles
“Sometimes it worries her, feeling obsessed and nervous if she can’t do justice to the writer’s creation, No one can ever guarantee public response, even if I know that the role has a lot of potential for me as an actress. It happens with most of the roles that I get: I ask myself if I can be this person and to at least give it a try. If I feel a role is powerful then I also put in my best. I have to try and make a difference.”
“I have always wanted to live many lives in this one life; lives of the rich, the impoverished, the disabled and even the blessed. Any interesting person who catches my attention, I try and enter his or her world through my imagination, curious to know how I would feel in their situation. I have always been like this, I would get told off for what appeared to others like I was imitating them but in reality I was so deeply absorbed in a fascinating character that I would be subconsciously following mannerisms, gestures and gait. I always wanted to become the medium to deliver those feelings, sensitivities and stories to audiences”
Hina’s debut as an actress has been rather late. Why not earlier?
“I was in the UAE and it had always been my dream to make my debut and establish myself as an actress from Pakistan. I am fine working anywhere else once I am recognised as a product of Pakistan. I have no desire to acquire another passport or nationality. There is enough work to be done here”
Her initial challenge was that she didn’t fit the bill for a young attractive actress to be caste as a leading lady.
“Nobody would say haan bhai yeh bauhat khubsoorat larki hai isse leliya jaye. To convince someone that you can act without any prior experience is difficult but I was determined to impress” In that, she has also shattered the stereotype and set the ball rolling for character actresses who share the spotlight with the lead pair and are just as popular with the viewers. In a short time she has given a lot of variation by doing the juiciest characters.
Today, Hina seems to have swept over the mini-screen, filling the gap left by the late Arshe Munir, Ishrat Hashmi, Atiya Sharf and Sarwat Ateeq.
“If I feel I don’t have the capacity for a role, I won’t accept it. Recently, before I got the script somebody told me about the role, and later when I saw the script it was a word-by-word copy of an Indian sitcom. I refused although I felt a bit sorry afterwards because the director was good. At times I ask for more money to discourage bad roles but I am quite sure about one thing: I don’t want to make any compromises” she said.
Is it true that Hina Dilapzeer might have surpassed seasoned actresses Zeba Shehnaz and Bushra Ansari as a performer par excellence?
“No one can push anyone over. I feel it is a miracle of God that people like my work. Before I came, plays were being done and they will continue even when I am not there. Each and every character has to be composed, created and brought out from inside you. If your aim is to become famous, your performance will suffer as an actor. Acting is such a dangerous field and one should not enter unless (s)he is sure that this is what (s)he wants. You have to be focused, responsible and then leave the rest to destiny”
“My aim is not to capture audience, all I want to do is give life to the character I play. If I get two similar roles, I would perform them in a way that they appear different, just like each person will arrange the same bunch of flowers in a particular way.”
While living in the UAE, Hina said she also experimented with radio.
“I would love to write and perform radio plays. You can give so much variation to your voice on radio, just like when you put your hand inside a bag and a whole new world of textures opens up”
The person closest to Hina was her late father. He passed away not very long ago. “He was my friend, my biggest support, my inspiration. From him I learnt to be forthright, honest and straightforward. He would say to people upfront if he didn’t like something about them. He has left a big vacuum in my life that nobody can fill. I feel that he still supports me and he is still with me in spirit”
I hope you have enjoyed a sneak peek into her struggling career
I don’t know why the simple black & white conversations & situations in Samira Fazal’s dramas are turned & twisted into grey, not once, not twice but always. Bari Apa, Silvatein & now Kabhi Kabhi. I mean I understand to keep the drama engaging writers keep coming up with unnecessary misunderstandings but to literally fabricate a thin-air lie in a crystal clear situation, only Samira Fazal can do that & by saying this I am by no means complimenting her prowess.
Arez told Eeshal that his mother & sister were insulted by her father & she, like a normal Eeshal would react, tried to ask her father about it but the way he changed the whole situation, it looked absolutely insane. I think Eeshal clearly knows how her father feels about Arez & his whole family, so Eeshal should’ve by now understood that he would do anything if he ever saw Arez or his family, so if Arez claimed that Eeshal’s father insulted his mother & sister, there was no need left to ask her father, in stead Eeshal should’ve told him to snap out of it. The whole twisting of the simple situation is nothing but a mind-teaser in Samira Fazal’s dramas I must say!
Ohkay & the funniest thing is, Eeshal is expecting & she is supposed to be the ONE who gets to feel & know about it just before anyone else does but seems like Arez knew of it way before Eeshal because it got discovered at the hospital. But after she got discharged she did come to Arez’s home, even then Arez couldn’t tell her? Then how come Rehbar got to know about it & he gave the news to Eeshal’s father because I don’t remembe Arez having a conversation with Rehbar about it? Arez’s family got to know about it too but still the funny question remains that the one who is going through this phase is the one who gets to find out about it in the end, right after everyone else. This is something totally new & what I have never heard or seen before, seriously!
I really don’t quite catch how such busy busy businessmen like Sunny & Shahveer are just so idle that whenever they’re called by Eeshal’s father, they leave every single thing behind & come running for her. Is Eeshal really really that important for them all? Why is Sunny entertaining Soni clearly when he looks totally awkward in her presence. He knows she’s below his league so why even have a conversation with her. Clearly Soni is not getting the hint & is getting a bit too flirtatious with him but I think Sunny can do better & just shoo her away.
I think Shahveer being such a top-notch businessman would have an ounce of courtesy in him that when he knows his proposal when wrong in this particular family, he won’t come in front of Eeshal again & again especially when he knows that he was rejected by her. So, is there really a need left to show that Shahveer is again trying to fix the terms with Eeshal? Shahveer was never a friend of Eeshal in fact he was introduced to her by her father for a purpose which couldn’t reach a proper ending. I mean being a busy businessman what does he want to do by hanging out with a pregnant married lady who is clearly having issues in her marital life? It just doesn’t make any sense at all. Not only he visits her but also takes her for the dinner, I mean does he not have any other friends to go for a dinner with? Is Eeshal the only one left in his city? I mean c’mon! Plus ohkay we can put Shahveer’s shamelessness or bonga-pan aside but is Eeshal really that shallow that she couldn’t ignore the fix stirred by her father? Did she really have to go for a dinner with a guy who once proposed her? & by the way what was a jobless guy doing at such a high-end restaurant that just in the nick of time he snatched the moment of insulting his wife.
Of all the men in this drama, the most disappointing character is that of Arez. He is such a conditional person who thinks the world revolves only around him. If he thinks his things are going right, he’d be as happy as a hyena but if things go wrong he’ll start snubbing every single person in his sight? I just don’t understand why can’t he be rational at all? I am guessing he was the one who let go of the insult he endured at his wedding for which Eeshal’s father was responsible so now why is he making a mountain out of molehill & torturing Eeshal for things she has no idea of? All these taunts & tantrums are making him look like a self-centered person who can’t put anyone above him. Ohkay, I know he is dukhyara, halaat ka mara but his irrationalities still do not get justified especially after so much Eeshal has put in their relationship & in their marriage.
If at this point Eeshal has broken down & has gone out of the zoo-like home of Arez, I think her behaviour is still justified because just when Arez is not ready to be considerate & understanding towards her, then what is she left with & why is she supposed to take all the pain then? Arez knew who he was getting married to, so why lose a track & get all mad at her especially? I think in their relation Eeshal has done more that was needed & Arez has just taken her for granted. I thought he was different & would be different when they first got married but I am furious as to why he was turned into this hideously typical husband who only knows how to take things but not return back. Ever since they’ve gotten married, what has he done except take her to the beach & made her eat Gol gappas? That is just ridiculous.
The “gari issue” was blown out of proportion in this episode. More than 15 minutes of tonight’s episode were dedicated to showing everyone’s reaction to Nabeel’s decision to give the car to Zeeshan. I think the fact that everyone in Nabeel’s family has an eye on Nabeel’s wealth (aka car) was well established in the last episode. I hope that this chapter will be closed and we won’t be hearing more about it in the next episode. When Romaissa told Nabeel that she came to office on the bus I was wondering if he would like to gift her a car as well;) and that is just when he said that the office car will drop her!
Nabeel and Romaissa are world apart but there is one thing common between the two; both of them are surrounded by people who put their own interests before their relationship with them. Nabeel’s relationship with Zeeshan hasn’t been highlighted yet. The conversation between Rabiya and Zeeshan in the last episode suggested that they are very close. It would have been much better if we could have seen a little more interaction between these two rather than wasting time on showing how everyone in the house felt about Nabeel gifting the car to Zeeshan. It was actually good to see a big family in a drama for a change because usually we see no more than two siblings in our plays but the fact that most of these siblings are not a joy to watch does not help. Nabeel’s “address” to his siblings on the diner table was void of feelings. It was almost as if a CEO was lecturing his employees and didn’t look anything like a brother having a heart-to-heart conversation with his family. I wish there was one normal person in the family who was not in awe of Nabeel’s wealth.
Just like the previous episode the focus on Nabeel seemed forced most of the times. Nabeel isn’t just a valuable earning hand for his family but he is also the most eligible bachelor inthe family and is also very dil phaink….I am not sure I have a reason to like his character just yet!
The scene in which one of Khala’s daughters complains about her ring and the conversation that ensued was too long and mostly irrelevant. I understand that the reason behind showing that particular scene was to once again tell the viewers how unwilling Khala was to marry Romaissa but it could have been more to the point.
The last episode was good fun but this episode did not work for me at all. The only scene which held my interest was the flashback scene in which Romaissa’s father tells her about how people can be stars as well. I have been unable to relate to or fall in love with any of the characters till now. All of the characters are all over the place but they fail to leave an impact. The director is not leaving much to people’s imagination and seems to be bent on showing every little detail. I don’t mind that at all as long as the scenes are short enough to hold your interest but that was not the case with most of the scenes in tonight’s episode.
This year had it all; dramas which were true masterpieces, those you watch only to kill time because they serve the purpose, others just so that you can vent out because you had very high hopes attached to them and also those which may not be perfect but have enough to offer to make you coming back for more week after week.
This year producers banked on star power more than ever; a year that proved that great production values and a star studded serial does not ensure quality entertainment. Loyal viewers watched plays that didn’t have much to offer only to see their favorite stars on screen.
The good thing about the dramas this year was that we got to see almost all the stars on screen, even those who we rarely see on screen. Writers touched tabooed topics and some of the directors did a splendid job of tackling them. Here is the list of those plays which in my opinion stood out for some reason or the other among a long line of plays this year. All of them were not perfect but definitely the sort of plays that need to be mentioned.
The list contains those plays that ended in the year 2013.
Talkhiyaan
Writer: Bee Gul
Director: Khalid Ahmed
Channel: Express Entertainment
Talkhiyaan had to be the most powerful serial of the year 2013. There was absolutely nothing run-of-the-mill about this play; everything was brand new. Talkhiyaan took me to a world of its own every time I sat down to watch it. Every character in the play was a story in its own right. Hina Bayat shone in a very different role; nothing like the sweet mother she is playing all the time. The locations were breathtaking, the direction was phenomenal, the acting by all the actors left you mesmerized and most importantly it touched upon many tabooed issues. The drama serial aired on Express Entertainment therefore it did not get the attention it truly deserved.
Dil-e-Muztar
Writer: Aliya Bukhari
Director: Shehzad Kashmiri
Channel: Hum TV
Dil-e-Muzter was happening, engaging and definitely the sort of play that keeps you hooked right from the get-go. The direction of the play and the cast had to be the biggest reasons for its success. Sanam Jung made her debut from Dil-e-Muzter and this was the first play that was directed by Shehzad Kashmiri. The viewers saw Imran Abass in a play after a long time, did he do well? I will let the viewers answer that question. Sarwat Gillani totally owned her character. The drama had many positives that made it stand out in the crowd.
Bari Apa
Writer: Samira Fazal
Director: Saife Hassan
Channel: Hum TV
Bari Apa had a very powerful start but after 13 episodes or so the story started going around in circles. But it deserves a special mention nevertheless because of the relatable and fun conversations, the first 12 episodes or so which were very engaging, Noman Ijaz’s memorable performance and also because of the characterizations. Savera Nadeem was outstanding as Bari Apa, she made it impossible for me to hate her character. I couldn’t help but rationalize Zubeida’s selfish behavior time and again until it really got out of hand.
Tanhaiyaan Nayee Silsilay
Writer: Haseena Moin / Muhammad Ahmed
Director: Marina Khan
Channel: ARY Digital / PTV Home
Okay, I know there are many people out there who were very disappointed with this naye silsilay but personally I thought that this was a really good effort. It was a nice mixture of old and new generations and the play was light-hearted yet emotional. Watching my favorite characters on screen all over again after so many years was nothing short of a treat.
Rehaai
Writer: Farhat Ishtiaq
Director: Mehreen Jabbar
Channel: Hum TV
Rehaai was written, directed and acted out brilliantly. It was one play which also had a very good ending unlike many plays this year which were superb overall but their endings failed to impress. Rehaai did not only focus on the problems faced by women at the hands of men who are supposed to be their protectors but also provided some good solutions to their problems. The play mainly focused on the issue of child marriage and tackled it really well.
Nanhi
Writer: Mona Haseeb
Director: Haseeb Hassan
Channel: Geo TV
Nanhi was the story a young girl who dreamed dreams which were very different from those of other girls her age. The play took the viewers in the dark world of people living in downtrodden areas. The play proved to be an eye opener for many and others termed it too open and tagged it as controversial. Sajjal Ali stole the show with her impressive acting, Javed Sheikh played a very different character and so did Shahood Alvi. Nanhi was a little too real at times but definitely one of the better plays that aired this year. The ending however was shocking and in my opinion upsetting, to say the least!
Zindagi Gulzar Hai
Writer: Umera Ahmed
Director: Sultana Siddiqui
Channel: Hum TV
Zindagi Gulzar Hai deserves a mention here not because it was a masterpiece but because it was followed by many viewers, the reason being that Umera Ahmed, Fawad Khan and a Friday night play on Hum is a deadly combo! Zindagi Gulzar Hai had its ups and downs; some episodes completely blew you away and others left you clueless. The ending of the play was rather abrupt. But the fact remains that Zindagi Gulzar Hai has to be the most talked about play of the year. It instigated some very interesting discussions on gender roles and double standards. Zaroon and Kashaf’s characters gave viewers much to talk about. Overall, it was a roller coaster of a ride criticized as well as enjoyed by many.
Aik Nayee Cinderella
Writer: Faiza Iftikhar
Director: Haissam Hussain
Channel: Geo TV
Aik Nayee Cinderella was liked by the viewers because of its amazing cinematography, script and direction. It was completely different from the usual A & B productions play mainly because in this particular project it seemed like the director Haissam Hussain held the reigns rather than the production house. The viewers compared Aik Nayee Cinderella to Disney movies. Personally, I gave up on it after a couple of episodes because it was not my cup of tea but that doesn’t change the fact that it was a play that kept many viewers glued to their TV screens.
Ullu Baraye Farokht Nahi
Writer: Amna Mufti
Director: Kashif Nisar
Channel: Hum TV
The play shed light on the way things work out in the feudal set up and the manner in which women are exploited at all levels by men. Nauman Ijaz, Saba Qamar, Irsa Ghazal and Sohail Ahmed especially stood out because of their performances. The play was a work of art and I couldn’t help but tune into it week after week. This was another play that served as a reality check and an eye opener. It was like leaving my cozy living room for a little while and drifting into the world of all these people who led a life very different from ours. The play did not get the attention it deserved and it was very few of the Hum TV plays which was shifted to the 9pm slot only after few of the episodes went on air.
Aunn Zara
Writer: Faiza Iftikhar
Director: Haissam Hussain
Channel: Aplus
I must admit that I went from falling in love with Aunn Zara when it began to completely losing interest after a few episodes. But for many out there Aunn Zara was a breath of fresh air which gave them something to laugh about and it gave them some characters that will stay in people’s hearts forever. The play mainly attracted people’s attention because of the writer, director and the leading cast. Even those viewers who stick to the three leading channels watched the play and liked it. Aunn Zara deserves to be in this list because it may not have hit a home run with me but it was liked by many people around me (credible sources;)
Kankar
Writer: Umera Ahmed
Director: Aabis Raza
Channel: Hum TV
Like all Umera Ahmed’s plays this year (ZGH, Mirat-ul-Uroos) Kankar too was stretched beyond limit. In an attempt to drag the play to 25 episodes the beginning was slow and the end not totally gratifying. Sikandar’s issues were not completely resolved in the end, he made yet another promise which was most likely to be forgotten just like all the previous ones. Kankar stood out because of its characterization. Kiran’s character in particular was heroic but real at the same time. Sikandar’s character was equally intriguing. Some of the dialogues will be imprinted in my mind forever.
Here is a short list of some of the plays that had a star cast and crew but failed to leave an impact.
Silvatein
It started off really well but once the story started to lose momentum, there was no rescuing it after that!
Khoya Khoya Chand
An extremely childish story which banked completely on star power and production values.
Kadoorat
Kadoorat was another play which took off well but lost its charm after a while mainly due to a weak script.
Kala Jadoo Part 2
The viewers who watched and like part 1 had high expectations from this sequel but it failed to deliver.
Numm
Yes, it still remains the biggest disappointment of the year! It was Ashk all over again just when we thought that Ashk was dead and buried Geo entertainment had Numm in store for us!
Hamnasheen andHalki Si Khalishwere the only two plays this year which I watched only out of curiosity and I have to say that for some reason or the other I couldn’t help but follow them till the end. Hamnasheen’s strength lied in the acting and the chemistry between the main leads. Halki Si Khalish was entertaining because of its pace and I really enjoyed Javaid Sheikh’s character and acting.
Other notable plays which were followed by the viewers this year are as follows. I did not follow these shows or did not like them therefore I will refrain from commenting on them but the readers should feel free to comment.
Mera Pehla Pyaar
Daagh
Mohabbat Bhar Mein Jaye
Saath Pardon Mein
Sitamgar
Kahi Ankahi

Another week with a great episode. It’s actually interesting to see how smoothly things are unfolding in this drama. I think we have seen so many unrealistically real dramas in this whole year that to see something this simple is actually doing the trick.
Aiza on her own has made some plans of bringing Laiba & Saad close to one another but she is still in a state of shock because she didn’t expect anything more from Saad then just a healthy professional relationship. Saad has his feelings rolling for Aiza but I am sure she will not accept any thing of that sort because Laiba is too dear to her. I was glad to see Saad’s positive attitude about his disease & the treatment. They kept it realistic & motivational that he just didn’t leave any hopes & locked himself in the room because he was suffering from something leathel. In fact his one-sided love was enough of a force for him to actually make a move on getting treated because he wants to return clean for Aiza & I loved the way they showed that how such a huge ordeal can be dealt in such a positive manner.
Laiba sadly got deviated away from the reality & got misapprehension about Saad actually loving her. She only eavesdropped on half of what Saad & his mother were discussing & she went into her dream-land. I was amazed that Saad’s mother picked up the right reason about Laiba’s fury towards Aiza. Obviously, she doesn’t know the exactly accurate reason but she knows that there are some harsh feelings harboring in Laiba’s heart for Aiza.
Laiba’s father thought it was a right decision to speak to Aiza about it because he knows what sort of a relation they both share. Aiza still has not totally understood why Laiba was avoiding her but I am sure she will soon find out. Saad was just in the nick of time when he stopped Laiba from looking at the painting because another hell would’ve broken loose because she had already over-reacted a lot just at the thought of them both being together during the office hours. But glad that thing has subsided for now. Saad has given a hint to Aiza about how important a thing he has to discuss with her but I am sure what he will hear will be totally unexpected.
Next episode tells a new story of Aiza getting to spend some more time with Laiba’s father on a business trip. I am sure Laiba’s father won’t be able to resist getting attentive towards Aiza because till now she has proven herself completely, so he has got no reasons not to get attracted towards her. Let’s see what happens next as I am sure it is getting a bit more interesting now!
