Haara Dil Episode 14 Review — More Death

So episode fourteen is here and oh how grim! It’s like the Grim Reaper has seen Abrar house and has decided not to leave it, he came, he saw, he stayed. The last episode ended with Fizza calling Momina but this episode didn’t reveal what the conversation was about. Contrary to my prediction Arham did show up at the coffee house to tell Momina that he will welcome her and Sami gladly in his life but as it turned out Momina never wanted Arham to accept her condition. She either deliberately suggested this idea because she was sure that Arham will not comply or it was something that Fizza said that made Momina change her mind afterwards. Either way it looks like Arham has had enough and there is no way he is going back to Momina after this rejection.

The next day when Arham shows up at the dining table he is pretty worked up and it is evident from the dark circles around his eyes; suggestive of how tired he is and probably symbolizing his defeat for he finally agrees to marry Fizza. Arham will be leaving for Dubai soon and the idea is to get him engaged before that but he makes it clear that he isn’t ready for marriage just yet which is smart of him. Marrying Fizza out of spite for Momina would have hurt Arham more than it would have hurt Momina.

In a rather grim turn of events Abrar is killed by a couple of petty phone snatchers. Surprisingly one of the snatchers is none other than the one and only not so good for anything Qasid. Now this part was a bit extra. It is so insulting when a writer over-explains something considering the audience is dumb and that is what happened when Abrar removed the cloth off of one of the snatcher’s face to reveal that it was Qasid and instead of just getting shocked and dying right there he had to add that overly used dramatic “QASID! TUM?”

Haara Dil Episode 14 Review --- More Death

Later the police finds out that there was a CCTV camera right at the street corner where Abrar was killed so it looks like Qasid doesn’t have much chance of escaping. I lauded the actor playing Qasid for his acting in the last episode but this time he was a bit of a disappointment. Being at your Khalu’s funeral the one that you actually killed but no one knows about it and consoling your Khala while getting interrogated by police there is so much potential in the scenario he is in right now but he didn’t avail any of that screen time well. He is not a professional killer and what he did was done in the spur of the moment he is clearly scared but it is too obvious yet very poorly done.

Abeer is still on her college trip as such events unfold back home. She isn’t answering any calls, probably the teenage angst, but she has no idea how much she will regret doing it. I also lauded Seemi Pasha’s character Amtul in the last episode and writers keep jinxing everything I appreciate. Amtul is really mean to Momina when she calls to inform that her father is dead and even after hearing the news Amtul didn’t have it in her to say a single word of kindness to Momina which is downright callous and inhumane. She might be prejudiced but she is a human being in the end and no human is heartless enough to hang up on a young girl who just called you to inform that she has been orphaned, it is hard to buy.

They are about to get engaged but Arham is as cold toward Fizza as he was before so Fizza’s inclination to marry him anyway is something hard to understand, this can only be explained by the fact she is stubborn and just needs to own Arham for the sake of it.

Overall this episode had really heart wrenching scenes when Momina is mourning her dead father and Danish also did well in this one but some of it as usual was average. The show has started losing it’s uniqueness in the regard that characters are now being portrayed as evil and we are back to the “the world is black and white” routine and the same old raqeeb routine. I have said this before and I will say it again those evil characters are boring, prosaic and over used. The only thing that is keeping this show going are the on and off deaths and events like babies getting kidnapped.

In coming episode we will see the return of Abeer and some more details about this angry teenager’s college life. Till then stay tuned.

Haara Dil Episode 13 Review — Predictable

So episode 13 is here and nothing unexpected happened. The typical step-mom routine is so prosaic and unimaginative it is hard to see past that. To some extent what made this episode more bearable was Fehmi’s nephew Qasid’s visit to Abrar’s house. The actor who plays Qasid really captures the essence of his character and is an absolute treat to watch. No surprises there he visits Abrar’s place to meet his khala and is met by Abeer instead. They have a pretty fiery first encounter and right after that he shows his interest in marrying Abeer. Partly because he likes her and partly because that way he can exploit Abrar’s money easily.

The other refreshing part was Hamna. Hamna is friendship goals honestly, she arranges for Arham and Momina to meet because she knows both of them are suffering and being a friend she can’t just watch them suffer silently. So she arranges a surprise meet up for them so they can talk things out. Momina suggests that if Arham must marry her he would have to accept her and Sami because she can not trust Fehmi or anyone else with Sami and it looks like this is more than what Arham bargained for. Momia has given Arham a 24 hour deadline so we will find out in the next episode for sure.

Haara Dil Episode 13 Review --- Predictable

On Amtul and Fizza’s front there weren’t any new developments except Fizza calls Momina and we will find out in the next episode what for. Abeer continues to be the rebel and it is fun to watch. She overhears Fehmi pitching the idea of marrying Abeer to her nephew Qasid and she is furious so furious that even Fehmi gets a fright from her.

In the morning Abeer is gone apparently for the college trip that Abrar forbade her from going on but after the eavesdropping the night before there is no surety if she will ever come back home.

The bond between Sami and Momina is becoming more and more stronger while the same bond is making the bond between Arham and Momina more and more weaker. It is refreshing that even after seeing Arham and Fizza together on a friend’s wedding Momina isn’t sore. It is stimulating for once to see a couple that is not so insecure that they can not even stand to look their partner hanging out with someone else.

Over all this episode was average but had its’s moments. Arham’s character is so far very deep but Danish Taimoor’s acting isn’t exactly doing justice to it. The way he struggles with his mother’s authority but doesn’t give in so easily at the same time he kind of knows what he wants from his life and that is something at this age. Seemi Pasha plays Amtul really well the way she gets agitated every time her authority is challenged is beautiful.

In the coming episode we will be witnessing some major twists and turns so stay tuned.

Haara Dil Episode 11 Review — More Chaos

Eleven episodes down and there are so many story arcs at play at the same time here. The highlights of this episode were Amtul finding out about Abrar’s second marriage and disclosing it to everyone, Momina revealing their father’s second marriage to Abeer, Momina and Abeer confronting their father and last but not the least Momina and Arham getting into yet another argument which just might be their last.

Momina is devastated after finding out that her father has married Fehmi so much that when Arham calls she is unabe to speak and keeps crying. This worries Arham so without a second thought he jumps into his car and comes over to console Momina just to be met with her callousness. Looks like this revelation has left her so rattled that she doesn’t believe in the whole idea of marriage anymore so any love shown by Arham for her seems meaningless to her.

She doesn’t tell Arham why she is so devastated rather they a have a heartfelt talk about what’s it’s like to live without a mother. Arham finds out about this later when Amtul mentions Abrar’s marriage in order to make Afaan and Arham more distant towards the Abrar family.

Haara Dil Episode 11 Review --- More Chaos

On the other hand somethings make no sense like if Fizza is Zawar’s sister then why is she living at Arham’s home and not at her brother’s. Moreover Fizza is embarrassingly in love with Arham. He clearly shuts all her advances but she embarrassingly keeps wanting his attention. Amtul is obviously trying to make them hang out together and then there’s the dinner part which was so badly acted, that’s also where Amtul meets Fehmi at the restaurant and finds out that Abrar has remarried.

Finally when Abrar gets home after dinner he is confronted by his daughters to which he says if they weren’t so callous towards their baby brother he wouldn’t have to get married and find him a mother who’d take care of him but both his daughters are adamant that he got married because he wanted it for himself.

After finding out about Abrar’s marriage Arham goes back to Momina’s place and confronts her for not telling him before and acts very rudely with Momina even tho Abrar’s marriage has nothing to do with Momina but Arham’s position is also understandable to some point because he wants to marry Momina but is probably tired of fighting one problem after another in order to convince his mother. Both Momina and Arham are all out of patience and very angry at everyone and everything mostly at the situation but they don’t know where or how to channel this anger so instead they end up being mad at each other.

They both say things they can not take back now. Looks like Arham has lost all hope and will be making no more efforts to reconcile with Momina and probably will consider Fizza now. In the coming episodes Abrar will bring Fehmi to his home and that will bring a new storm.

Haara Dil Episode 10 Review — Oopss

So this episode of Haara Dil had some interesting developments including the introduction of much awaited Zawar’s sister Fizza. Yashma Gill plays the role of Fizza and is portrayed as a very lively and open person. It is evident that Fizza is hopelessly in love with Arham while Arham only gets annoyed by her presence. Amtul is all set with her plan of making Arham marry Fizza we will have to wait for the future episodes to find out how Areej and Zawar deal with this development.

Abrar is over the moon because of this change in Momina. Momina’s acceptance of Sami has served as a happy sad kind of deals for Abrar because now it has become a pickle for him. The sole reason behind marrying Fehmi was that Sami needed the constant care of a mother now that Momina is playing Mommy for him it is hard for Abrar to justify Fehmi’s presence in his life. He constantly struggles with giving Fehmi her due status of his wife in his home all the while not losing his daughters’ trust any further.

Arham is still trying to reconcile with Momina and he sees Momina’s change of heart as an opportunity to reignite the long lost spark between them and he succeeds to some extent. After all that has happened in Momina’s life she finds it hard to believe that she can trust Arham when he claims that he will fight anything and everything to be with her. She is adamant that Arham’s mother won’t accept her and that she won’t marry him unless she gets his mother’s approval. Abeer is trying her best to talk Momina into patching up with Arham but Momina being the realist that she is keeps telling her that she won’t keep running after delusions.

Haara Dil Episode 10 Review --- Oopss

On the other hand we can see that tho Fehmi puts a brave face in front of Abrar but her patience is running thin. She wants to live with her husband like a married woman should but Abrar still needs some time before he discloses this relationship to his family and friends. Momina had started growing suspicious of him and Fehmi after seeing them together in the mall and later when she heard Fehmi call Abrar to wake him up in the morning.

This episode again ended with a bang when while cleaning the house Momina comes across the nikkah-nama and finds out that her father has married Fehmida and all her suspicions are confirmed.

This climax has left us with so many questions. Will Momina relapse to old patterns and start hating her father for remarrying, will she start hating Sami again, how will Abeer respond to all this? Probably by becoming even more rebellious.

We will find out this and a lot more next week till then let us know how did you like this episode of Haara Dil.

Haara Dil Episode 1 Review — A Beginning

So written by Rabia Razzaq directed by Furqan Adam and produced by Mastermind Production ‘Haara Dil’ is Danish Taimoor’s third production of a drama serial. The play is all star studded including names like Dainsh Taimoor, Hiba Bukhari, Mahmood Aslam, Shehryar Zaidi, Shaheen Khan, Rabya Kulsoom, Rameez Siddiqui and Seemi Pasha.

The first episode aired on Aplus yesterday and included it’s fair share of cliches and climaxes. Hiba Bukhari plays the role of a middle class, responsible and somewhat straightforward girl Momina who is of age and her mother Shagufta played by Shaheen Khan like every other Pakistani mother can think of nothing but finding her daughter a suitor. Mahmood Aslam who is playing Momina’s Dad’s role (Abraar) is very supportive of Momina’s decision to further study and even of her relationship with Arham which is played by Danish Taimoor who happens to be the son of her father’s best friend Afaan (Shehryar Zaidi).

The status difference between Momina and Arham’s families is as clear as morning sky but it doesn’t bother anyone much except Arham’s mother Amtul (Seemi Pasha) and his sister Areej. The episode basically revolves around Momina and Arham (of course the leads) who struggle to understand what the future holds for them. The play can be a bit Bollywood-ish at times with all the use of slow motion and urrti zulfain aur hawain.

Haara Dil Episode 1 Review --- A Beginning

Arham’s mother dearest is portrayed as a very authoritative figure who is very blunt almost callous at times. She wants Arham to marry Anoushay who is her friend’s daughter and of course complements their family status (cliched right?). Moving on Arham is adamant that Momina is the only woman who can actually make him happy and to him nothing else matters he finds a confidante in his father Afaan who understands and respects his sons decision but constantly reminds him of not making promises if he can’t keep them.

The first episode was quite on point we’re quickly brought to Areej’s Mehendi where the two families finally meet but I have no idea where both dads were probably hanging out someplace cool with no drama since they are the only ones who can see through the extra-ness of it all. Amtul is obviously very derogatory towards Momina’s family and Shagufta being the lady that she is says nothing in return but Abeer (Momina’s younger sister) who is another character as cool as the dads played by Rabya Kulsoom reminds Amtul Aunty that she can not treat people like that.

Haara Dil Episode 1 Review --- A Beginning

There’s a lot of drama on this mehendi when Momina arrives and her dubbata catches fire because of all the diyas at the entrance (that she conveniently fails to see) and Arham comes to her rescue tho the ost in the background really is beautiful but one can not help but notice the clicheness of this scene. Areej and Amtul obviously snap because of this incident and there’s another fiery exchange of words between Areej and Abeer and finally Momina speaks as well after which she walks out of there which upsets Arham meanwhile Amtul gets drowsy and almost falls and well drop scene.

Shagufta reaches home and talks to Abraar about how clear Amtul’s stance on Arham and Momina’s marriage is so it is about time that they start looking for some other rishta for Momina. Anyway if any of you haven’t seen it already I won’t spoil it for you because the episode ended with a twist and at least I could not see it coming.

Overall the play has a great ost, casting is good and I especially liked Rabya’s performance as Abeer. The dialogues are powerful at times like the time Afaan tells Arham “Jo rishtay khushi dete hain wohi dil ke sabse ziada nazdeeq hote hain” ahhh I felt that. The story comes of as predictable in the beginning but I am guessing there’s a lot to come. So fingers crossed.

Do share with me what you thought of the first episode.

Haalim Episode 11 – Review

Wah! Is the perfect description for this episode. Maza aagya sach main.. Number 11 “ Waqt Kay Us paar”…..who would have imagined all the events to turn out this way. Let’s get started Haalims..The episode again began with a weird dream of Taaliya where she is in her era that is the new Malaysia and that basket. I couldn’t connect anything from her dream maybe something from her ex-husband, her wedding stuff or something. It needs a lot of brainstorming but I am more interested in the first dream to be materialized.

I really want to talk about our favourite the ideal person in this novel Wan Fateh Ramzel first because there are some shocking revelations here.( Eyes popping out)

Fateh Ramzel

The most unexpected response from Fateh Ramzel just marked this episode for me.He finally said it yes he did and guess what’s that? He needs Taliyah and kudos to Taliyah’s confidence that she had in her vision that one day this” Mr. Needs Nobody” will need her. The jail part where he had to chose between his life and Taliyah he clearly chose the later it was also quite surprising for me but cute.

I must give credit to the political nature of Fateh Ramzel that even in front of Taliyah’s Father he had the guts to put his point first and that’s the true nature of this inspiring man.

Honestly, it tore me when I read that he was physically tortured ..Ouch
Aryana’s appearance and that potion drinking event was full of suspense but I have something to ask as well wait till the end of review.

Shehzadi Tasha

We move next to our Shehzadi Tasha who had some really amazing feasts and courageous steps to her credit that must be highlighted. The first one was the island, apart from being the most courageous moves taken by her I was repeatedly reminded about Fateh Ramzel’s prediction about Taliyah’s dismissal. She is smart and yes she is right wo apne liye akeli hi kaafi hai. In that Island everything marked the intelligence of Taliyah except that choari parts where she couldn’t resist and our Shareef Adam scolded her Lol.

The most emotional part for me was Taliyah’s come back from the Island and her care towards Fateh Ramzel…The girl is head over heels in love. Fateh Ramzel’s questions of what she will do after he will leave her hurt her but she courageously hid the pain and smiled. Such a brave girl! Taliyah’s steps to bring all the Slaves to pressurize her father were impressive and that was a smart move as u say in politics.

Shareef Adam

Adored his care for Taliyah in the island and of course his concern because he always thought Taliyah will go back alone and he will be stuck forever..Lol but deep inside he trusts Taliyah and that was amazingly put forth when he lets her go back. Pyaara insan Adam!

Loved the message of always having a pen and paper with you because after all he is a moarikh he must have it but the Islamic history portrayed made the whole scene much more meaningful and beautiful. So guys write if you can and if you don’t you truly are wasting Allah’s gift.

I didn’t know Adam was soft hearted to a limit that he wouldn’t kill the beast who was ready to kill them. Apart from his soft heart it was his training that taught him never to hurt them but to free them is the best option to get rid of their danger. Great message of humanity !

Now let’s talk about the most important event of this episode that potion part…
The suspense it created left me thinking even when ALL of them safely reached to their era.

The words of Fateh that Adam and Taaliya always put him first because they always thought he is above them.( Fan fever)

The appearance of Aryana and her sadness.

All these words kept the reader anxious as we all knew Taliyah’s father wouldn’t have left them without taking something back.ThankGod that Shart was also revealed in this episode otherwise the whole month would have been so anxious for us.

So Our Beloved Fateh Drank that Liquid because he thought that it was the best option at that moment but I don’t think so. Here is why

1- Fateh thought of drinking the liquid because he had nothing to lose. He was the way he was a Leader the only thing which changed for him was his feelings for Taliyah and he compromised on that.Fateh thought of not letting Taliyah drink this because if she did she would forget all the lessons and live the same life but even When Fateh drank this Taliyah’s father was satisfied it means there is something he knows that Fateh didn’t. For me if Taliyah would have drank this she would forget everything and she would have again chased that treasure and boom back to her father so in this case her father would have let Taliyah drank it But he chose Fateh and the reason was Taliyah’s lust for power will bring her back so there should be no one stopping her from coming back. But I think even if she had drank it she would have gone back. Why Fateh? Can anyone explain.

2- The time when Fateh revealed everything to Adam showed that he wants Taliyah to stay with her But he took a promise from her to never go back even for him.

3- Even Fateh knew that Adam loves Taliyah still he wants her. Do u think its selfish of him?

4- Do u think after reading that email Taliyah would go back for Fateh Ramzel?

5- After knowing that his heart has the same old hateful feelings for her would she forget all the moments she lived with him?

Or Taliyah’s father knew that for Fateh Ramzel She would come back because he knew Fateh used to say bad things about Taliyah ( A chor) yet he protected her ? just a thought

Last question what is that Aakhri samndari safar of Taliyah…Was it a truth?

Can’t wait for the new episode. I hope you all enjoyed the episode and the review as well.
Keep me in your prayers.

Haalim episode 10 – Sanam Taraash

0

So finally here with a review of the probably most read novel in Pakistan, Yes you are right its about Nemrah Ahmed’s new novel Haalim.

This novel could be categorized as Science Fiction because it is more like a fantasy world or a world that only existed in the Einstein’s time equation in addition it has that gems of wisdom we usually taste in Nemrah Ahmed’s novels. I am sure this gave you a lot of her characters to remember in retrospect. I know this novel is more like a fantasy or a superficial kind of world but the lessons from each character’s story gives you a whole new dimension to think about and the time theory makes it very interesting.

Number 10 is out and I ought to say it had a lot of events that capture your attention and refresh your mind and give you a reality check in terms of your thoughts and believe me that is the speciality of the writer. I cannot resist to say this because every episode has a title and it unfolds with scenarios and conditions which are most likely happening in our country nowadays and it always touches those topics which are faced by many people these days. Let’s jump in the ocean of this beautiful and thought provoking world.

TITLE- SANAM TARAASH

Well, the title was quite captivating but it wasn’t something new as we already experienced this in Namal But surely the story had. For me this title hinted the two main aspects of the episode.

1- The ‘’fan fever’’ moments that were magically explained by our favourite Fateh Ramzel. I can not even explain those moments in words that how beautifully he made clear the idea of being easily impressed by others. As a matter of fact I thought I was reading a psychology book. So thumbs up for that therapy Wan Fateh Ramzel or Ghulam Fateh Ramzel.

2- The Statue of Wang Lee. Atleast here they showed some ‘’Good’’ talent in Taaliya or Should I say Shehzadi Tasha.

TAALIYA’S JOURNEY SO FAR IN THIS EPSIODE

The episode took off with Taaliya’s dream that she was in an office cabin and wearing a symbolic ring. Taaliya’s dreams are actually visions that come true exactly how she sees it so there are no hidden meaning or symbolic gestures behind it. So good news for all Haalims that Taaliya will go back to Malaysia But the question lies … Alone ? or with Adam or Fateh Ramzel or both? That was the sacriest question of Adam That I am sure left all of us wondering and guessing.

Despite being called a chor and dhokebaaz by our favourite Fateh Ramzel ( a politician ) I still don’t dislike her character. I don’t know why but when you read about Taaliya’s actions and her justifications you could feel for her. I didn’t know Taaliya would speak about these matters. The first one that actually stood out the most for me was the ‘’Work Place Ethics’’ and the second one ‘’Victim Shaming’’.
I was surprised to read how seamlessly the writer linked the Rishta of Sultan Mursal with the Work Place Ethics and made it very clear that what should be the status of a ‘’Boss’’ and ‘’Employee’’ and the true meaning of Harrassement.

I just appreciate the determination of Taaliya, even when she knew her father knew everything she wasn’t shattered but tried to make plans to escape and it was good to see our Taaliya back jiske paas hamesha plans hote thay! Now coming to the most Shocking and Eye Popping Event of this episode.

Mehndi hai rachne waali, haathon pe gehri laali…..Lol the shaadi part. I honestly remembered Datan when she messed up the plan of Taaliya by calling Asra and telling her that a girl will steal ur husband. Does she really knew Taaliya or she could foresee future? Never mind, the most weird shaadi happened and I don’t know what I felt. Taaliya’s fans maybe Happy but I still don’t know what to say about this. The reaction was shocking then neutral….Lol if it makes sense but the circumstances made the decision quite satisfying as there was no other way to get rid of Sultan and his proposal.

Taaliya finally knew what Treasure was awaiting for her and why she visited Sanbao, At first it looked as if she will visit that place for Fateh Ramzel but then the puzzle was solved by Taaliya herslef and it was exactly in accordance with her nature….Yes, Yes it is choari but different kind of choari. ‘’The Antique Shop’’ whose inauguration will be done by Adam and Taaliya in the future. What a thought!

FATEH BIN RAMZEL’S JOURNEY

This episode marked the unexpected shaadi of Fateh Ramzel and literally this man is a born politician you know jis ke rag rag main siyasat basi ho…duh even at that crucial moment where he had to marry Taaliya to save her he was looking for brownies.. I know his plans were for all par hadh hoti hai…khair

We also knew that Fateh Ramzel was upset about the distorted history written by our Shareef Moarikh Adam but the reason was not what Taaliya assumed. She accused him of fame, and wanting to stand out as Best. He just wanted to meet Taaliya’s father that’s why he was upset when Adam didn’t mention him but Fateh Ramzel is a politician after all he knows other ways to make his job done.
Fateh Ramzel was also seen encouraging the slaves and teaching them about ‘’Zehni ghulami’’The Entry of Aariyaana and the history of Tea, Fateh Bin Ramzel always proves to be a ‘’Mr.Know it all’’

COUNTRY’S ECONOMIC STATE

Economic Hitman a disease well explained to common people by Nemrah Ahmed. I just keep wondering how a single novel could touch so many important topics to educate everyone. The suggestion which was put forth by Taaliya was for the well being of the country but the Chinese ( Wang Lee ) idea won the argument and Sultan because of his moti aqal couldn’t grasp the disaster behind it.

DREAM MYSTERY

I swear I wouldn’t have known about these treasures as my guesses about Namal were exactly like this. The Mystery of the treasure revealed so far was that there were 3 treasures, The first one was the treasure of ‘’time’’ the second is going to be the ‘’ Antiques’’ and the last one is still unknown.

ADAM’S JOURNEY SO FAR

Adam’s participation in this episode was little but whenever he appeared he did something really important and gave the basis to progress the story.
He found out the book about the Three moons and discovered that island and collected his location for different maps.

Adam loved Taaliya and this line explains it all…haaye Adam

Haalim episode 10 - Sanam Taraash

END OF THE EPISODE

What a true politician Fateh Bin Ramzel is, he easily convinced Raja Muraad that he knows everything about the future but what was awaiting for us as readers was shocking….

Haalim episode 10 - Sanam Taraash

I think FATEH Bin Ramzel lied but if he didn’t then Taaliya must discovered the key and travelled back to her time. What are your thoughts about this episode and what are your guesses? Pardon me if a missed something as the episode had a lot of happenings.

Haalim (The Dreamer) – What Is In Store For Us?

Chala gya chaand dekho, so gye saare sitaray bhi.
Ab tou aajao Ay neend, adhooray hain kch khuwab hmare bhi..

For now the most anticipating adhoora khuwab is the novel “Haalim” meaning “The Dreamer”. This is Nemrah Ahmed’s upcoming novel which will start from May InshaAllah, can’t wait for it already.

We are still in April and the curiosity assigned with this novel is just unbearable..huff and I couldn’t resist to discuss it before time. As we all know Namal has been an exceptional novel for almost yes almost everyone and it has set the bar high so obviously our expectations are reaching the moon regarding Haalim and it will be unfair to compare them both at any level, I am pretty sure they are going to be poles apart and meaningful in their own ways.

Let’s imagine a fairytale because hearing the word “Dream” immediately flashes the stories of princesses or a Fantasy world with exotic , breathtaking nature’s beauty but hold on, it’s a novel coming from someone who can twist , turn and surprise us with the most unexpected events so yeah, it will definitely have deeper meaning and quite a heavy dose of wisdom. For those who crave for wisdom, knowledge and an utmost desire to learn, Congratulations to you guys.

Haalim is a dreamer and its about his dreams, it is a broad concept and we can not guess anything about it right now but yes we can surely express our thoughts about it.

Here are some guesses.

1- Haalim is a name of a guy, who is ambitious and dedicated to fulfill his dreams and those dreams might transform him to a person where turning his dreams into reality would be his utmost priority and he will forget all the right ways to get to that point pretty much like HAWAS or Dunya ki bhook jisay andha karde….good guess I think Lol.

2- Haalim can be an inspirational novel compiled with some of the most thought provoking and highly motivated stories of dreams turned to reality by ordinary and at the same time not very ordinary people with all their hardships sketched out in a beautiful tale.

3- Haalim could be a journey of a person who is ignorant of his true self and religion and how dreams would gradually scare him, frighten him, and compel him to think, ponder and set his boat on the right direction.

4- Haalim could be a very technical novel where we could be introduced with different characters and all those characters would eventually link with each other at the common ground and that would be their DREAMS. More like JKP.

5- Haalim could be the interpretations of some dreams which are experienced by “Saaliheen- The pious people” because they envision true dreams and how it affected their life.

6- Haalim can be a story of anyone, any common person who wants to achieve big goals in life and eventually is hit by such trials and tribulations which would direct his course to the most Meaningful and Beautiful achievable Dreams..

This is it from me, and I am sure Haalim would not be about all this Lol or at least some of it might be right and what’s the harm in racking our brains over f an eloquent piece of writing ( of course it will be, wishful thinking ;)) which will enlighten us and truly benefit us all InshaAllah

Haalim – Chapter 1 Review

Nemrah Ahmed’s Haalim has started publishing – an episode a month – from this month and this was the first episode as well as chapter we got to read. :) It is getting published in Khawateen Digest and is also available online on Nemrah Ahmed’s official page.

The first episode was full of surprises and writer has done an excellent job in ensuring we continue reading this novel.

*Spoiler Alert*

So, the very first scene shows Haalim dreaming a dream and it aroused enough curiosity in me to continue. Dream was symbolic of something which we get to read in the last scene of this episode.

Then writer takes us to an office in Kuala Lumpur where Molia is seen telling his boss that he has traced where the laptop of their boss – which got lost somewhere by Anwer – is right now. And that he hired Halim, a private scam investigator for this job. Anwer tells him to do whatever is in his will to get the laptop back or he will fire him. He contacts Halim who at first shows some attitude then agrees to merely “help” him on getting 3 times as much money as before. He gives him profiles of Tangu Kamil’s workers to see who he can “buy” for getting the laptop back. The only profile which attracts him is that of Taliya Murad from Kashmir, Pakistan who’s a caring, loving, quite stupid and impetuous girl who works as a maid for Tangu and also cooks soup in a soup parlor. Her only weak point is her illegal status in Malaysia.

So, Molia uses it to threaten her but she refuses and tells Tangu Kamil of the incident who then properly looks everywhere for the laptop and tells the secretary to do the same. Laptop is produced from one of the drawers of study table. Tangu gifts some money to Taliya and tells to take the money from Molia as well which at first she’s reluctant to do as her pride in her “honesty” and “loyalty” will be shattered as Molia will think she’s a thief who betrayed her boss but Tangu convinces her. These qualities of hers impressed me so much that she became my favorite character at once. I liked her only to be surprised later :P She gives the laptop back to Molia at her soup parlor taking the money (not willing to) from him who taunts her of doing what she seemed to loathe the most. She feels hurt, writes resignation letter and leaves for her home.

… & here comes the plot twist! :D I was shocked when I read “welcome home Halim!”, haha! :D This seemingly innocent Taliya was the same person who was Halim for Molia, (took money as a scam investigator) (voice modulation helped to act as a male), then Taliya for him (took money for stealing back the laptop) and Taliya for boss Tangu (took money as a reward for loyalty)! :P She and a lady Liana – whom Taliya calls Datin (meaning grandma in Malay language) – work together as scam artists and have done many scams and thefts together. They were the ones who initiated it by stealing the laptop from Anwer and putting it in Tangu’s study room and finally giving back to those it belonged to and earned money three times.

That night they plan together their next theft. Taking laptop search as an excuse she had already made Tangu open his drawers in front of her whose code she could see as an image on book rack’s mirror. They intend stealing Mrs Kamil’s jewelry next on Sunday night his family has special guests coming.

That night they also talk about where they came from and how they met, just to remember old days. They met seven years ago on an airport when Taliya’s foster parents had gotten her married (nikkah) on Skype with a boy she had come from Lahore to Malaysia to live with. It is revealed Taliya has precognitive visions and dreams which help her decide what to do. She had her first vision that day on airport when her hubby was about to receive her. Liana was a worker who helped her feel better. She was being used as a courrier girl for money laundering by her husband and was oblivious to that, Liana helped her in safely getting out of the airport with money and then they used it to get divorce from him. Liana herself was probably living in an olds house those days. It is also revealed Taliya’s first memory is that of 17 yrs ago when she was 11 yrs old. She was walking between church’s desks, had a shabby dress on and a dirty face, in St Paul church, Malacca, Malaysia. She was admitted in an orphanage from where her foster parents belonging to Kashmir took her only to treat her as a maid when they returned to Lahore, Pakistan. Everyone tells her nothing about her could be found. Her name, family, where she came from, she knows nothing. But she believes her ethnicity is Malay. She also had this round symbol on her neck back as if it was heated. She had forgotten everything, probably due to some incident she doesn’t know of. She told everyone her name is Taliya bint Murad and so that’s her name.

So, after establishing the background of these characters, we move on to the next part where they put two and two together and get to know that a replica coin of old times (which Mrs Kamil has in her possession) and a bracelet of Queen – these two things they never stole every time they saw someone having it. Coincidentally! These two circulated among many different victims of their scams but never thought of picking. Liana joins the pictures of these two to show Taliya how these two join to make a “key”. And are broken parts of a gold key! Taliya then gets to remember how she had this key whose chain was wrapped around her arm as a bracelet when she was 11 and lady Maria who dropped her at orphanage must have taken it from her.

So, she tells lady Maria a fake cover story to get her to tell where that bracelet is. She admits she accidentally broke it and then sold it to a goldsmith to fend for Taliya. And that before she took it from her, she did utter a few words telling her name is Taliya and that this key is her father’s. Also, something on the lines of “villagers are in deep trouble, I’ve come here to rescue them.” And tells that no one came to claim her.

On the planned day, she succeeds in stealing the jewelry minus gold coin as Tangu Kamil’s family gifts it to Fatih Ramzil (guest who’s also Malaysia’s politician) right in front of her. Liana also calls her to tell the missing bracelet is now in Fatih Ramzil’s possession. The dream she saw, for the first time ever she interprets any of her dreams right! Now both the parts of key are in the same person’s possession so they will be doing a theft on “Malaysia’s next prime minister”!!!

Haalim - Chapter 1 Review

That’s where it ended and I liked reading it throughout. :) It’s going to be about, as it seems, dreams and their interpretations and I’m excited! There were many comic lines which amused me for example the point about Molia scared at the sight of his family picture in “dhoop” as his family will be “bay ghar” if he didn’t get the laptop back :D and Hailm AKA Taliya telling him to write it 555 times: “Halim KL (Kuala Lumpur) ka behtreen scam investigator hai aur main ainda us se ikhtilaf nahi karoon ga.” then Molia taking a page out of his file in front of Taliya to show her the missing laptop’s picture and Taliya reading the line which was written on a page which slipped a little outside and line could be read. :P

Haalim - Chapter 1 Review

Taliya said she doesn’t justify what she does but I caught her doing just that. She put the blame on her husband and then on her foster parents that had they kept her well fed and well cared for, she won’t have gotten used to lying and stealing to fulfill her needs. This heist will be her last – she says so. She dreams of getting a beautiful house at her favorite place and wants to do a big big robbery one last time! Also, after getting to know this bracelet originally belonged to her, she’s a little curious to know about herself too. There’s a hope through this bracelet she’ll meet her biological parents – a hope! A scary thing is, all those people who possessed these two things got ill, died of painful diseases. These things brought bad luck with them – that’s what Datin thinks and is scared. :O Also, since Taliya’s dreams and visions come true, usually bad ones, she thinks it’s not a blessing but a curse! Sad!

Haalim - Chapter 1 Review

I also liked everything Fatih Ramzil said about toheen e risalat and the role Muslims can play in order not to let that happen. Fatih dreams of a progressive Malaysia, he had a daughter Ariyana who died in childhood.

The first episode was screaming Nemrah Ahmed ;) as by now I and many others recognize her unique writing style.

Anyway, the first episode was a complete package and I loved it. Share your thoughts too! Thanks for reading!

Guzarish – Drama Review

For all Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s crooning kissi daaaaaaa yaar na bichrayyyyyyy through 25 episodes was worth – I am not sure whether kissi da yaar actually did bichar in the end! Who was really who’s yaar and did one particular yaar actually survive in the end? Produced by Six Sigma Plus, directed by Ovais Khan and written by Sanam Mehdi, Guzarish aired it’s last episode on ARY Digital last night. I have been following the drama from the start and if I felt at any point that the drama was dragging – I can not seem to recall that feeling now. A story with nothing extraordinary to offer yet somehow different, Guzarish made a pleasant watch due to the natural acting of its cast, decent storyline and direction.

Guzarish is the story of two young people, Zain (Ahmed Ali) and Zara (Yumna Zaidi) who are in love and engaged to be married. Zain’s older brother Jaffar (Ali Khan) is also engaged to be married to Zara’s sister Sara (Sara Ashraf), although theirs is an arranged match. The girls live with their father Aalam (Javed Sheikh) and although their widowed Phuppo (Saba Hameed) lives separately, she and her son Saad (Affan Waheed) are often at Aalam’s house. Phuppo apparently was never fond of her bhabhi and neither is she particularly fond of her nieces. Saad is in love with Zara but accepts she and Zain are in love and meant to be together and his mother is very adamant too that her son must never marry either of her nieces.

PIC1

Anyhow, a misunderstanding on the night of the nikkah causes Jaffar to break the engagement with Sara and despite Zara’s pleas to not create a scene nor cause problems in her relationship with Zain, he makes a huge fuss and makes his mother and Zain leave without having any ceremony done. Aalam is outraged too over Jaffar’s insults. Zain’s mother (Saba Faisal) has an accident and while she is in the hospital hovering between life and death, Zara tries to reach out to Zain. Upon Aalam’s insistence (read hukkum) and with Zain unresponsive due to worry over his mother’s condition and Jaffar’s unmoving stance, Zara is married to Saad, much to Phuppo’s despair.

What follows, is disappointingly a typical evil saas all out to make sure her son turns against the bahu and has her thrown out of the house. Despite Saad’s love for Zara, but with Zain’s constant presence somehow or the other in their lives, Saad succumbs to jealousy and suspicions and turns on Zara who finally has had enough and walks out of the house. She collapses and ends up at the hospital where Jaffar sees her and takes her home and Saad believing that Zara has gone back to Zain, wants nothing to do with her. All seems to have worked out how Phuppo envisioned except that Saad is then diagnosed with a brain tumor and by now he has learnt how his mother has played him and seems like the brain tumor has truly affected his brain because he feels the most fitting punishment for his mother would be to deprive her of the one person she loves the most – him. He refuses all treatment and shuts her out and Phuppo realizing how wrong she had been seeks out Zara for forgiveness and to bring her back to convince Saad to fight for his life.

A few other tracks play simultaneously in the drama and add to the story. However, thankfully their tracks did not take the focus away from the main leads which was a relief. Hina (Maha Warsi) is Zain’s khala ki beti and comes to Karachi for Zain’s wedding. She and her mother stay on when Zain’s mother is ill and then she begins to develop feelings for Zain which she openly expresses to him. I am often quite curious about this kind of love where you know the person you love madly loves another yet you claim your love is so deep you feel fulfilled just to know you can be with that person. Anyways, Hina and Zain are engaged and then not engaged and then umm, I lost track.

Jaffar apparently has been in love with a woman abroad for many years who falls for the charms of a younger man, Khurram. Khurram marries her as she is rich and he has financial troubles back home but he does not love her. Khurram however hides this part of his life and marries Sara. Khurram and Sabina have a son who ends up with Jaffar who has made it his purpose in life to protect this child.

PIC 2

What appealed to me the most about this drama was the refreshingly normal attitude of Zara. She was in love with Zain, true. But once she was married to Saad, she accepted the turn her life had taken and made an effort to make her marriage work. Normally the girl in this kind of situation in our dramas becomes a robotic person who erupts from time to time at the understanding new miyan, declaring her love for her old flame. Or, when the understanding miyan vows to deliver her to the love of her life, she realizes her understanding miyan was her true love. Yawwwwn! And Gaggg! I liked Zara’s positive attitude, how she did not whimper and weep over each of Phuppo’s insults and tried to bond with Saad. Also, in the scene when she leaves the house I liked how it did not become a meri baat tau sunain and at one point Zara took control and walked out herself. The fact that she collapses right after is a separate story uggh!

Zain however finds it harder to give up on Zara and I found myself relating to his character and his confusion too. He made a few silly decisions especially jumping into Zara’s life time and again when she made it clear that would only ruin things but given how he was in love with her I could see how he was not ready to give up even though she was married now. However, his immature actions did only end up making life difficult for Zara.

I rarely watch a drama which has Yumna Zaidi in the cast. Something about the way she talks and acts just does not sit well with me. But I will admit she has performed really well in this play. I felt for Zara. However her dialogues at times were a bit too preachy and made me cringe but overall I could not fault her acting. Ali Ahmed, Affan Waheed and Maha Warsi fit their roles perfectly but did not stand out. My favorite however had to be phuppo. Saba Hameed is an actress who fits into her characters so well you believe you are watching the character and not Saba Hameed. Her skeptical and scornful expressions and then her desperation as a mother were so spot on. When she reaches out to Zara I did not find it unreal or artificial and could totally relate to her personality change.

I also liked how although the ending is a happy one (I think), it took a few episodes to come to the point rather than dragging out the drama and then doing an about turn and turning everyone’s lives and personalities upside down within the last 40 minutes and lo and behold, all is well again. The viewers were kept wondering till the very last episode though who Zara will end up with eventually – Saad or Zain. Although not a masterpiece, Guzarish was a decent watch for me.

How many of you were watching Guzarish and rooting for Zara-Zain or Zara-Saad? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Guru Review – An Extraordinary Tale of Love & Sacrifice

Writer: Likhari
Director: Bilawal Hussain Abbasi
Producers: Shazia Wajahat & Wajahat Rauf
Schedule: Every Wednesday at 8 pm on Express TV

Express TV continues to take the lead by airing dramas that are anything but stereotypical. While the leading channels, which most of us usually tune in to, continue to churn out the same old stories, Express TV dares to experiment and so far is excelling at it. Guru is one of the 3 such dramas on air on Express right now which does not bank on commercialism or shortcuts to get public attention. It has an unusual protagonist (and definitely not only because of his gender) and unlike many other dramas that revolved around intersex characters, Guru’s (Sattar) character really is central to the story. The producers did not play it safe by keeping this character as a sidetrack or ‘one of the’ main stories. It is always pleasant watching stories about characters with unique circumstances especially when such stories are told unapologetically and with the utmost confidence. The viewers can only fall in love with a character and relate to the story if the makers had enough faith in it themselves while creating it.

Guru Review – An Extraordinary Tale of Love & Sacrifice

What Makes Guru (Sattar) Stand Out

First of all, I would like to clarify that what makes Guru’s character stand out is not its gender or its gender identity. Guru is much more than its gender and that is what makes this character truly unique. Guru’s existence is obviously influenced by his gender but does he let any of that stand in his way? Absolutely not! We have watched many intersex characters in our dramas before as well therefore a story revolving around gender is definitely not the actual novelty here. The novelty is how the character has been penned down in particular. Most of the time intersex characters are shown living miserable lives and their entire identity revolves around their gender. Their stories in our dramas have been based on their bechargi, which is also a sad reality, therefore the fact that Guru is not a victim is the most refreshing element of the story. Guru is a strong, sensitive, and loving individual who is capable of making the kind of sacrifices that only someone with a strong paternal instinct can make. At the same time he stands his ground whenever he is faced with a difficulty, therefore his resilience and steadfastness is another positive trait that makes this character appealing.

Guru Review – An Extraordinary Tale of Love & SacrificeThe first few episodes of the drama focused on the strong and sensitive side of Sattar. Later on, we were introduced to an individual who could keep friendships and was great at solving problems. The most recent episode was the best because Guru’s character came into its own like never before. The initial confusion completely disappeared and he owned his status as the father who wanted to give his daughter the best life. Guru’s decision to change his identity and turn his life around completely so that Mariam could have a ‘normal’ family life had to be the biggest sacrifice yet which showed this character’s strength like never before. On the one hand, there is Sattar as a father and on the other hand, we have Fakhra (Zhalay Sarhadi) who does not have the same courage as Guru.

Guru Review – An Extraordinary Tale of Love & Sacrifice

Guru Has More Strengths than Weaknesses

I must admit that Guru gradually grew on me. The first two episodes were somewhat repetitive and I did not fall in love with the protagonist instantly. However, Guru finally took off with its 4th episode and completely won me over with the 5th one. Although Guru’s script is not as meaningful or solid as it could have been considering how different the topic is overall, it still has a great deal going for it. The positive aspects of the drama outweigh the weaknesses. The fact that this drama has been made with the right frame of mind and a clean heart reflects in its characters and the main plot. Therefore, the writer definitely gets full marks for trying his best to tell this story without focusing on the commercial element. However, some of the scenes in the first few episodes in particular could have been more crisp and the other track involving Zhalay Sarhadi does not have an appeal. Some of the get-ups also are not as realistic and convincing.

Even with all these flaws, there is so much about Guru that is positive, uplifting, meaningful, and heart-warming. This drama does not only break stereotypes but also plays an important role in redefining those real-life gurus and Surrayas who have been dehumanized by society. After watching this drama, I am certain, many people will look at intersex individuals in a different way. The fact that the writer has managed to achieve this objective without showing these characters as victims is what truly impressed me.

Guru Review – An Extraordinary Tale of Love & Sacrifice

The positive and important side characters in the story are presented on-screen in such a way that their positivity reflects through their actions and not through their dialogues alone, as is the case in many dramas. Professor and his wife help Guru because they are good-hearted individuals who consider Guru a friend and not because they feel for him. They are also his mentors who never questioned Guru’s ways until they felt that this way of life would impact Maryam.

Guru Review – An Extraordinary Tale of Love & Sacrifice

Then there is Imam sahib who does not judge Guru and points him in the right direction without being preachy. I loved his dialogues about the equality of the human race irrespective of gender or identity. These positive characters which are Guru’s support system give the message of inclusivity in such a subtle yet effective manner. Guru’s relationship with Suraya is heart-warming. Together, they are like a set of parents who would do anything required to make Maryam’s life very different from their own. All these characters are the life and soul of this drama and the best thing about it.

Guru Review – An Extraordinary Tale of Love & SacrificeBijli and Kashish have their own agendas right from the beginning. Although, the actors playing the roles are doing a phenomenal job just like the one playing Suraya’s role but these characters and their scenes have not been my favorite simply because their scenes have been repetitive and the characters are not grey.

Ali Rehman Khan – Take a Bow

This is the first time ever that Ali Rehman Khan decided to experiment and I must commend him for having the confidence to choose a character that isn’t only unconventional but also daring. He definitely stepped out of his comfort zone and did not hold back while performing this character. Honestly speaking, it took me a while to accept him in this role at first but after watching the recent episode, I must say that Ali Rehman has totally outdid himself. He was especially impressive in scenes covering his love and affection for Maryam. His body language in the interview scene was priceless. Ali Rehman deserves tons of appreciation for taking this step and for giving this character his best.

Guru Review – An Extraordinary Tale of Love & Sacrifice

Final Remarks

Guru is not faultless but it is definitely the kind of drama that restores your faith in Pakistani drama makers. It has a different and appealing storyline, some beautifully written characters and connections, and quite a few impressive performances. Guru redefines the concept of love and humanizes those individuals whose feelings are usually discredited or unrecognized. Guru speaks for those who do not have a voice and gives them an identity that many of us can relate to. Guru’s story deserves your attention and might just win you over if you sit through the first two episodes.

Guru Episode 1 Leaves Audience Emotional

Ali Rehman Khan is an actor who came into the field simply because of his passion. Leaving a lucrative job at UN, Ali entered the industry and he has since been a part of many films and dramas. The actor is however, mostly famous for his looks and gets roles of the rich boy tycoons which he does well. His other roles are also mostly very urban but the man just did something totally out of the box as he is playing an inersex character in his new drama Guru. Guru is written by Likhari and produced by Wajahat Rauf and Shazia Wajahat. Ali Rehman Khan is playing a very massy character and he will be depicting the challenges our intersex community has to face everyday.

Guru Episode 1 Leaves Audience Emotional

The first episode of the drama went on air on Express TV last night and it has blown over the audience. People were emotional about the struggles intersex people have to face and Ali Rehman Khan just shocked everyone with his different look as well the accent and mannersisms he depicted, thanks to director Bilawal Hussain Abbasi.

Gunah Last Episode – Review

                                                                             *Spoiler Alert*

I just got done with watching this last episode and I am certain I am not the only one who is in utter shock after watching whatever we were shown in the last few minutes! This ending was not half-baked like Jurm’s ending but it did not do justice to this mini-series. When I tuned into this episode I knew there was a surprise in store but when we got to the part where they were burying Ahmed and Noor, it was confusing. However, the last few minutes had the ‘surprise’ in store which came out of nowhere. Although it explained a great deal, I felt that this part of the ‘climax’ should have been allotted a little more time. Umer’s infatuation with his teacher was covered in these short scenes and as a viewer, it was difficult for me to take it seriously.

Also. The fact that the room was locked from the outside and could not be unlocked from the inside made me question Malik Hayat’s IQ. And those parents who had so much faith in their daughter instantly believed that she could have done something like this. I felt that this entire development could have been much more convincing. If a little less time was spent showing the same flashback scenes and a little more on this angle, if it was to be shown, these last two episodes could have been far better. Although, I absolutely loved Gunah overall the last two episodes were slightly underwhelming as well as disappointing in some ways. This last episode only had shock value but made little sense.

Sabiha’s expressions in the previous episode when she finally finds the grave and has a crucial piece of evidence did not work for me at all. Her expressions were more like that of a killer getting away with a crime than a committed police officer making an important discovery. Yes, she had reason to be ‘excited’ because it was a big breakthrough but the expressions suggested she was actually ‘enjoying’ this. This took away the ‘human element’ of this track and character, which for me was such an important part of Sabiha’s track.

Gunah Last Episode – Review

Similarly, Nabi Baksh’s sudden change of heart in the previous episode made little sense to me. He acted as if he had never seen a dead body in his entire career or that Malik Hayat was incapable of killing someone. His dialogues made no sense especially after we found out that the bodies were not tortured or brutally cut into pieces but simply buried.

Gunah Last Episode – Review

In this particular episode, the way Noor’s children stood there casually and watched their mother being buried alive was the most ridiculous part of a series that was otherwise so intense and on point in terms of execution. It would have been natural for them to react in such a situation. Similarly, Noor’s ‘confidence’ was illogical and unbelievable. Even if she was doing this to ‘save’ her son, the kind of confidence and calm she showed came across as unbelievable. I felt that this entire development was not as impactful as it could have been.

Gunah Last Episode – Review

The way Malik Hayat and Gul Meher ‘crazy’ personalities were shown repeatedly in all these episodes, I was expecting these murders to be a lot more gruesome! It was evident right from the start that Meher was the crazier one in the relationship therefore it did not come as a surprise that she instigated Hayat to do this. The madness of both these characters was depicted on-screen flawlessly right till the end but I felt that this particular episode should have focused more on the surprise element of the story even though it was a little too ‘out there’ even by “Gunah” standards!

Final Remarks

After watching these last two episodes, unfortunately, I am more sure than ever that Pakistani writers and directors completely fail at wrapping up even those dramas which have been executed brilliantly otherwise. While watching this episode, I had a difficult time believing that it was directed by the same person who directed all the previous episodes.

Gunah Last Episode – Review

Overall, watching and reviewing Gunah was an experience like no other! This series had some of the most intense performances. Rabia Butt’s character had to be the most impactful female character we have seen on our screens. Her performance was outstanding for the most part. Sarmad Khoosat and Saba Qamar translated the madness they shared in the best manner possible on-screen and literally set the screen on fire more than once. Ali Raza is an amazing actor who has a great deal to offer. Kudos to Express Entertainment for continuing to experiment; they get full marks for that. However, I did not like the way the last twist in the story was handled. Although, it had its shock value the premise and the entire development were covered in a rush.

Gunah Episode 4 Review – Directorial Genius

This was another remarkably impressive episode of Gunah. Gunah is a directorial genius which shows how a director’s vision can make all the difference. In each episode, the director has not only put the acting skills of the ace actors to good use but has also used music, sound effects, and most interestingly silence to add more value and meaning to the scenes. This final product makes it clearer than ever that a talented team led by a visionary director can take the viewers on an extraordinary journey.

I must mention here that the sound quality of this drama is so impressive that it is at par with the cinematic experience. To be honest, it is actually better than many Pakistani films I have watched in the cinema! Although, the plot is also interesting and different but what truly stands out is the treatment given to the script. Gunah’s production values, direction, and performances have definitely elevated its level and have turned it into a masterpiece. The fact that this is a miniseries that will soon end makes it an even bigger treat for the viewers who are sick and tired of dramas that test their patience and are dragged to the limit.

Gunah Episode 4 Review - Directorial Genius

Introducing Ahmed

Until last week I was still not sure whether Ahmed really was a ‘victim’ because one of the conversations in particular in one of the previous episodes suggested that he could have become an accomplice. However, this latest episode focused more on Ahmed than ever before and it can easily be concluded that he was as good as they come! He was obviously someone who could not even hurt a fly and his relationship with Noor was such that he would have done everything in his power to protect her. Each one of the scenes covering his character showed his caring, sensitive, and responsible side. Ali Raza deserves all the appreciation for taking up roles that require a persona that is completely different from his real-life personality and get-up. He has breathed life into this character and is extremely convincing as the ‘good boy’. In Mohabbat Gumshuda Meri he is seen playing a role that is unlike this one. I am definitely looking forward to watching more of him because I feel he has a lot to offer. He is not another good-looking model ‘trying’ to act but he is a performer who refuses to let his looks or modeling background define his acting career. Clearly, he is not afraid of experimenting and is not desperate to play the lead alone.

Gunah Episode 4 Review - Directorial Genius

Noor and Meher

Ab na cheehnana paray ga because I am done! Noor and Meher’s relationship as well as their opposite personalities were explored further in this episode through flashback scenes. We have watched too many such opposites in our Pakistani dramas but their equation has an element of pure evil which is anything but ‘usual’. Apart from that, Meher clearly takes the lead and keeps the viewers engaged. Her characterization is on point and this has to be Saba Qamar’s most powerful performance after Kamli. She has nailed Meher’s craziness and her underlined issues. Her eyes literally speak more than any of the dialogues written for this character. At the same time, she is a pro at putting on a show when needed. She turns into a victim whenever she feels she needs to do so. However, she cannot hide her true emotions; the madness in her eyes is a constant and for that alone Saba Qamar deserves an award. Juggun Kazim is equally convincing as the sweet and naïve older sister who understands her young sister’s flaws but could never have expected what she was planning. Juggun has translated the softness of this character on-screen in a way that is extremely likable. As I said, this is not the first time that we have witnessed a younger sister having an affair with her brother-in-law but Gunah is definitely not Jalan!

Gunah Episode 4 Review - Directorial Genius

Match Made in Hell

Is waqt tum mujhe mere aashiq nahin aik kamzor mard lg rahe ho. Meher and Malik Hayat are an on-screen jodi like no other! Their ‘lust’ for each other and their madness have been depicted on-screen in the most impactful manner by the uber-talented duo. Sarmad Sultan Khoosat has the screen presence needed to make this character as larger than life as it should have been and his on-screen chemistry with Saba Qamar proves yet again that these two make the perfect team. The dead silence in this particular scene was indicative of the calm before the storm. There was no need for a background score either considering how intense the performances were. This scene was the perfect portrayal of their relationship dynamics. It reminded me of the scenes from Kamli that were both powerful and disturbing.

Gunah Episode 4 Review - Directorial Genius

Meher is the evil genius who is constantly pushing Malik Hayat to do whatever is needed to prove that he loves her. Malik Hayat’s initial response and concerns went to show that like any other criminal-minded individual; he wanted to get his wife out of the way without maligning his name or reputation. Like many such perpetrators, divorce did not seem like a ‘logical’ way out.

The Investigation

Sabiha has been completely consumed by the case and continued to leave no stone unturned to find out any missing pieces of the puzzle. The investigation was once again covered in detail and logically. By the end of this episode, Sabiha got what she wanted with the help of a competent officer who truly earned her shabashi. Rabia Butt makes every single scene count. She has translated Sabiha’s no-nonsense attitude just as well as her soft and sensitive side. Nabi Baksh is on the right track as well now and it seems as if by the end of the series, he will have a complete makeover.

Gunah Episode 4 Review - Directorial Genius

Final Remarks

Gunah has been a fantastic watch, every single scene and frame has been well-crafted and put together perfectly. There are times when you question a few things about the script but the treatment given to the script has been flawless. Apart from the well-established actors who continue to impress in every single episode, Fahad Hashmi truly stands out because of his perfect dialogue delivery and body language. The preview of the next episode was quite elaborate but I am still hoping that the makers have some surprises in store for us next week.

Gunah Episode 3 Review – Enticing & Exciting

This was another engaging and entertaining episode of Gunah that kept me on the edge of my seat. You know a drama is well made when at the end of every episode you feel as if it ended too soon. Some aspects of the story became clearer in this episode while there is a great deal that still needs to unravel. Every episode answers some questions and leaves the viewers with many others. The human element of each one of these characters was once again kept alive throughout. I actually found myself doubting whether Malik Hayat really had something to do with his wife’s disappearance or not. The editing of this episode was just as flawless as all the previous ones. Every scene added something to the story. The camera work was amazing as usual, the director made sure that every expression was captured and the actors ensured that the viewers did not miss the message they were trying to convey.

Gunah Episode 3 Review – Enticing & Exciting

This latest episode opened with SHO Sabiha enjoying street food and inspecting the area. The woman who was shown wandering the streets and was tagged as ‘pagal’ by Nabi Buksh and others always seemed like an important character. In this episode, she caught Sabiha’s attention once again and the viewers found out that Ahmed used to look after her. We have yet to find out if she knows something but it is quite apparent that she might have the missing piece of the puzzle. Sabiha’s leisure time was intercepted by Nabi Buksh and soon she was back to being the dabang police officer we all love! Sabiha’s entry into the hospital was captured just as well as Malik Hayat approaching towards her. The background score was on point but when she started talking to Malik Hayat she was surprisingly polite.

Gunah Episode 3 Review – Enticing & Exciting

Sabiha made sure that she showed her concern for the child while at the same she warned Malik Hayat that he should not try to obstruct the course of justice. The way this entire investigation is being carried out and has been translated on screen is nothing short of impressive. Sabiha and Nabi Buksh make a rather unconventional but good team. This time around Nabi Buksh pointed Sabiha in another direction and they decided to search Ahmed’s house. I was expecting them to find money but what they found instead were affectionate notes and cards probably made by Malik Hayat’s son for his favorite teacher. The viewers did not find out more about this new development in this particular episode.

Gunah Episode 3 Review – Enticing & Exciting

The dinner invitation was one of the most surprising developments which made me wonder if Malik Hayat was really so smart or if was he not involved in his wife’s disappearance at all. This character continues to be the most intriguing one. Gul Meher on the other hand makes her intentions quite clear. Saba Qamar has shown her prowess as an actress in every single of this particular series. Although she got little screen time in this episode her eyes said so much in that one scene. The madness which drove her to do the unimaginable shows in her eyes and is a testament to Saba’s brilliance as an actor. This was my favorite scene in this particular episode for so many reasons. The setting and the performances couldn’t have been more faultless.

Gunah Episode 3 Review – Enticing & Exciting

For the first time, Gul Noor and Malik Hayat had a scene together that covered past events. Malik Hayat and Gul Meher were ‘close’ weeks before Noor disappeared. Noor probably had a clue but she comes across as the kind of individual who would continue to give her relationships her best despite knowing the ugly truth. It appeared as if she was trying to convince Ahmed to marry her sister. Meher on the other hand was trying to persuade Malik Hayat to divorce her sister so that they could get married. These flashback scenes were woven in intelligently and did not interfere with the flow of the present-day scenes. These scenes also revealed a great deal about all the characters involved.

Gunah Episode 3 Review – Enticing & Exciting

Final Remarks

Gunah continues to be a must-watch for all those viewers who prefer watching something which is both entertaining and novel. The performances and the treatment given to the script definitely make it stand out. The preview of the next episode however was somewhat disappointing because it revealed a little too much. I wish the people incharge would have kept this preview less revealing. Overall, this episode was as superb as the first two. I am eagerly looking forward to the next installment.

I would love to hear guesses from the viewers who are watching the show. Do you think Meher did whatever she did single-handedly or is Malik Hayat equally involved? Is Ahmed party to the ‘crime’? Share your views.

Gunah Episode 2 Review – Intense & Gripping

This latest episode of Gunah opened with a recap of the previous episode and then the past events were once again covered in the same mysterious manner as last week. This time around these past events did not just show Gul Noor and Ahmed’s interactions but the most important aspect of these scenes had to be Gul Meher’s presence. It was apparent that Gul Meher spent a lot of time at her sister’s house and she was keeping an eye on her sister while she planned how she was going to use her interactions with Ahmed to plot whatever eventually led to their disappearances. Right now, that is what I gathered from everything that we have been shown. I am sure everyone else feels the same way as well.

Gunah Episode 2 Review – Intense & Gripping

Pachtati tu ho gi, pachta rahi ho gi.
Hum nay tu kuch ghalat nahin kiya na?
Gul Meher and Malik Hayat’s well-written and intriguing conversation gave enough information to further entice the viewers. After listening to what they had to say and watching how they interacted, it was obvious that they were both in this together. While Malik Hayat’s attraction towards Gul Meher was equally intense, Meher seems to be the one who exercises more power in this relationship. Other than that, many of her dialogues suggested that she was scared of ‘losing’ Hayat even now. Saba Qamar truly outdid herself in this particular episode by highlighting Meher’s madness. Sarmad Khoosat was equally impressive in a role that is quite unlike many other characters we have seen him enacting on television. His performance reminds me of his screen presence in the film Manto. With an artist such as Sarmad, it is easy to tell when he puts his heart and soul into an acting project. I feel that after Manto, Gunah is that project.

Gunah Episode 2 Review – Intense & Gripping

Sahiba directed all her efforts toward finding out more about Ahmed. She wanted to know the people she was looking for before she set out to find them. Also, this was her way of convincing Nabi Buksh that there could be multiple possibilities. This episode also covered Sahiba’s personal life. These scenes were woven together intelligently in the plot. Sahiba is a single mother who wants to focus on her career and her daughter. However, there is constant pressure on her to get ‘settled down’. This was interesting; even someone as accomplished and independent as Sahiba has to face such pressures from her parents. I am certain these scenes must have helped many viewers relate to this character on a different level. I agree with all those people who feel that Rabia Butt looks like a chic model in the drama but no one can disagree with the fact that she has managed to strike a great balance by playing her character so well that you willingly accept that the catwalk is part of the package! You expect Sahiba to be all that and more. I actually find this combination interesting as well as believable on-screen. Rabia Butt’s performance was impressive and effortless throughout.

Gunah Episode 2 Review – Intense & Gripping

Roz ke so nafal maang phir shayad baat bn jaie. Nabi Bukhsh’s scenes were just as interesting as the lead characters’ scenes. His character holds your interest, and the credit for that goes to everyone involved from the writer to the director who made sure that this supporting character leaves an impact. Nabi Baksh’s conversation with his colleague reflected his opinion about his new boss. Later on, his conversations with Sahiba highlighted how he had been ‘trained’ over the years but was intelligent enough to perhaps unlearn all that he had learned so far. Even with all his shallowness, there is a side to his personality that gives you hope that Nabi Buksh might change for the better.

Gunah Episode 2 Review – Intense & Gripping

‘Mehru’ and Hayat’s scene in which she narrates her nightmare was intense and gripping. Every time these two appear on-screen together, the energy is unlike any other we have seen on television. Sarmad and Saba are unbeatable together. Their passionate scenes together were followed by a reality check which Hayat in particular probably could not even comprehend. His son’s life was on the line. Was Mehru worth it? However, I felt that in this particular scene, Hayat’s panic was not translated on screen too convincingly.

Gunah Episode 2 Review – Intense & Gripping

Final Thoughts

Gunah continues to be an unusually interesting drama that has so much going for it. It has been made with such cinematic verve that you often tend to forget you are watching a Pakistani drama. The stellar performances, a well-crafted plot, brilliant dialogues, and the novel yet apt treatment given to Gunah make it a drama that is a must-watch for all those who like watching gripping dramas which break barriers.

Gunah Episode 1- People Enthralled By Strong Performances

Gunah is a new addition to the spectrum of Pakistani dramas and it boasts a stellar cast. Directed by Adnan Sarwar, Gunah is a mystery crime thriller starring Saba Qamar, Sarmad Khoosat, Juggun Kazim and Rabia Butt in prominent roles. The mini-series has started last night on Express Entertainment and people are loving it. The drama has a very netflix series like feel to it and with the people only getting stupid love triangles on television, it is a treat for viewers.

Gunah Episode 1- People Enthralled By Strong Performances

The drama’s whole cast has given some strong performances and the characters all look suspicious making the viewers feel connected to the drama. Gunah has a specific feel to it and it will be easy for it to hook the audience, given it manages to get the views it deserves.

Gunah Episode 1 Review – Perfection

Writer: Mohsin Ali
Director: Adnan Sarwar
Producers: Hina Aman and Kamran Afridi
Schedule: Every Thursday at 8 pm on Express TV

Gunah’s first episode aired this week but unfortunately, it did not get the attention or appreciation it deserved. This first episode was fast-paced, brilliantly directed and the performances couldn’t have been more phenomenal. The script was also crisp and entertaining. It has been a long time since I watched the first episode of a drama that was so faultless and well-put-together. In short, I am completely sold after watching this first episode and eagerly looking forward to the next one. I just hope that Gunah will have a better ending than the recently aired mini-series Jurm.

Gunah Episode 1 Review – Perfection

Perfection

The first episode of Gunah started with scenarios showing how things were in the present time, three weeks after the actual incident around which the plot revolves. Therefore, the actual mystery will unravel as the story progresses and as SHO Sabiha (Rabia Butt) investigates Gul Noor (Juggan Kazim) and Ahmed’s (Ali Raza) disappearance. What I loved about this opening scene was the director and producers’ faith in their script. They did not rely on star power at all in order to make the opening scenes more enticing. The focus was actually on people who do not even have a stake in the actual plot. However, this was a powerful way to open the episode since it piqued my curiosity and when Malik Hayat Khan (Sarmad Khoosat) made an appearance, I was certain that we were in for a good ride! Sarmad Khoosat had a definite screen presence in this opening scene; everything about this scene was on point. The camerawork, background score, and performances could not have been better.

Gunah Episode 1 Review – Perfection

While Sarmad Khoosat rightfully deserves tons of praise for his powerful performance in this first episode, I would like to appreciate the brilliant performance by Fahad Hashmi who played Malik Hayat’s right-hand man. He was brilliant in Jo Bichar Gaye and in this first episode, he was equally well suited for the role he played. Fahad is the kind of actor who makes every single scene count and by doing so he proves that sometimes your acting skills can make your character stand out more than it would otherwise.

Gunah Episode 1 Review – Perfection

After Malik Hayat Khan’s powerful introduction, the viewers were shifted to a completely different situation. Ahmed’s mother was shown pleading in front of the SHO who clearly did not care and it was also evident that the entire police force at the time was being controlled by Malik Hayat. This was another brilliantly put-together scene that conveyed so much about the situation at hand. The timing of the transfer letter and SHO’s reaction went to show how things were being operated. This was such an important scene since it laid the foundation for the change the viewers were going to witness as soon as Sabiha took charge. Nabi Buksh played superbly by Faiz Chauhan who impressed us with his performance in Dil Na Umeed Tu Nahin was another interesting character. Faiz Chauhan’s performance was flawless throughout.

Gunah Episode 1 Review – Perfection

Other than Sarmad Khoosat, Rabia Butt’s entry, and performance were the most impressive. Sabiha is a one-of-a-kind character that Rabia Butt owned right from the get-go. It was great watching her in yet another powerful role after Pehli Si Mohabbat. It was also truly refreshing watching a woman playing such a strong lead. Rabia Butt made Sabiha’s scenes come alive on screen; that is the magic of great casting! It brings every single character to life on screen. Sabiha’s professional and headstrong attitude was translated on screen with the utmost precision by Rabia Butt. Every single expression was spot on and her body language was impressive.

Gunah Episode 1 Review – Perfection

The scenes covering Gul Noor’s interactions with her son and Ahmed were intelligently woven into the story. All of them gave incomplete information which kept the mystery alive effortlessly. Gul Noor’s parents were shown as naïve and simple. There was clearly a huge class difference between the two families.

Gunah Episode 1 Review – Perfection

Gul Meher (Saba Qamar) is definitely more than what meets the eye. She and Malik are clearly hiding something but it remains to be seen who is responsible for the ‘gunah’ and what they actually did to Gul Noor and Ahmed. Gul Meher’s dialogues about mohabbat suggested that she was the kind of person who would do whatever it took to get the person she loved. The main idea of the drama was perhaps encapsulated in these dialogues. Gul Meher and Malik both played the victims but it was quite obvious that they were responsible for whatever happened to Gul Meher. Saba Qamar is an ace actress who never disappoints.

Gunah Episode 1 Review – Perfection

Final Remarks

It isn’t very often that Pakistani drama viewers get to watch crime thrillers and it is even a bigger rarity that the makers are able to do justice to the genre. Lately, we got to see multiple mini-series with more or less the same concept as Gunah. Out of all of these, I felt that this first episode was the most impactful. This first episode of Gunah promised a power-packed crime thriller. All the actors are the perfect choice for playing their respective roles. The series does not only have some of the best lead actors but the supporting actors are equally impressive. The director, editor, and the person incharge of the background score have done complete justice to the script. If you did not watch this first episode, I would highly recommend it, especially to those viewers who want to support Pakistani dramas that are out of the box. This entire episode had a cinematic feel because of the cinematography and the editing. At the same time, everything looked ‘real’ on-screen.

Gul-e-Rana – Last Episode

*Spoiler Alert*

The impossible happened today; Asher ne chai se inkar kr diya, Adeel underwent a complete personality change which made me wonder if he had eaten one of those rare mushrooms which effect a person’s nervous system and alter their personality completely, Rana’s mother seemed concerned about her daughter for the first time and most of all for the very first time one of the heroines of our dramas decided to do something that made her happy and did not forgive a man who put her through hell. Rana never had feelings for Adeel, she was forced into this marriage and Adeel did not give her much of a reason to love him therefore watching Rana finding her happiness in doing what she always wanted to do was fair enough. Adeel’s father was not even shown in this episode, he should have been given a few minutes or so if not more. Adeel should’ve had one last conversation with his father as well. This was an unexpected ending since most of the viewers were expecting Rana to forgive Adeel.

gr1

Adeel conveniently blamed his bari phupo and choti phupo for all the flaws in his personality even though the viewers saw him treating them like he treated everyone else around him. So, Adeel thought about everything he had done wrong in life while he was bed-ridden but why were the viewers told that in one conversation and not shown what was going through his mind? In episode 19 we saw a completely different Adeel who was too busy judging everyone and spying on Rana and in episode 20 after Asher and Omer’s visit he completely changed!! Why were all these episodes after Adeel’s accident wasted on baseless arguments and showing the negative side of Adeel when they could have been utilized to show how he was changing? Perhaps because showing all of that needed a little more creativity. Adeel’s friend who came to see him was seriously confused. First she said that she did not know he was married and then she says “meinay suna tha tumhari mrs. ke saath relations achay nahi hei”!! Did I miss something?? I must confess I felt for Adeel a little in tonight’s episode mainly because of Feroze Khan’s acting and Sajjal Ali was beyond brilliant tonight. All the actors did their part really well, except for Imran Ashraf and Rubina Ashraf,  but unfortunately their characters and the story did not have much to offer.

gr2

As far as I can recall only 3 episodes of this play made sense to me other than that just like this haphazard ending the script as a whole had too many unconvincing and ill-conceived twists and turns. Most of the episodes focused around Adeel and Rana’s dysfunctional marriage and this main track of the story also lacked substance because the problems between Adeel and Rana were shown in the form of arguments which most often revolved around character assassination. Adeel did not trust Rana and Rana had tons of reasons to hate Adeel but the way the change in Adeel’s attitude was shown in these two episodes once again showed the lack of vision, creativity and depth in the script. The flaws in the script, editing mistakes and the director’s inability to handle all the tracks in the story intelligently made this overrated drama nothing more than an over-crowded circus which was not even entertaining. Many of the characters that were introduced as primary characters in the story disappeared in many episodes and reappeared when they were needed. Adeel’s phupos and their daughters who got so much screen time in many episodes were only ‘used’ in the end to justify Adeel’s twisted personality.

I would like to thank all my wonderful readers who were kind enough to read the reviews and participate in the discussions. I must say that I wouldn’t have been able to continue watching and reviewing this play if I didn’t have these discussions to look forward to!
