Firaaq – Episode 2

0

A very well put together second episode which showed everything in detail without putting me to sleep. All the scenes and happenings added to my knowledge about the characters and I must admit that until now I think all these characters and the story is very refreshing. What I like about this play the most till now is that all three women in the play have a personality of their own, they come across as intelligent and thinking human beings. Paymaan’s conversation with Sara right after her mother called Shams went to show that even though Paymaan was raised by an over-controlling mother in a very strict environment but her social skills were not affected by it. Paymaan is an intelligent girl; she may live under the same roof with a woman who thinks that intimidating people is the only way to interact with them but Paymaan knows better. She is apologetic about her mother’s attitude and is concerned about her bhabi because her brother and bhabi are the only family members she has besides her mother. Paymaan also shares how she feels with her mother and as a result of that her mother gives Sara a call in order to make sure that Sara never visits them again. This went to show just how insecure Tabbasum is, she does not want Paymaan to interact with anyone at all because she is fearful that someone may take her away from her.

Tonight’s episode showed how close Roomi and Shams are. Roomi knows his friend only too well because he has seen him struggling when he was going through the worst phase of his life. Not only this Roomi has great influence on Shams too. Shams comes across as a very emotional and impulsive person. He went to his mother’s house to meet his sister but decided to take her with him when he saw what was going on. Our therapist was perhaps right after all Shams is afraid to face problems; he wanted to leave Sara forever when he found out that she had gone to meet his mother although there were many other ways to solve this issue. Shams’ concern for Sara and Roomi went to show what a good friend he is.

firaaq1

Mohib’s character will probably be revealed more in the next episode. There wasn’t much of him in tonight’s episode. The lyrics of the OST playing in the background just before the scene in which Roomi was making Imroz’s portrait made me laugh!

Uzma Gillani was absolutely brilliant as Tabassum, the dialogue ” tum yeh kamra chor kr nahi ja skti” went to show how desperately she wanted Paymaan to stay confined in those four walls. Tabassum changes her tone and attitude when she knows that her intimidating tactics are backfiring. In the preview of this episode we were shown Paymaan leaving the house but I guess we will get to see that in the next episode.

Overall, this episode was well-paced, intelligently directed and very well-written. For now the focus is on Sara and Shams but I am quite sure that the story will focus more on Imroz, Paymaan and Roomi in the upcoming episodes. The casting appears to be flawless so far. Cybil Chaudhry was perfect for playing the simple yet intelligent Sara. Sanam Saeed has been wonderful till now, the scene in which she is sitting and thinking about how her mother’s behavior might have affected Sara and Shams was very well directed and acted out. I am really looking forward to finding out how Paymaan grows as an individual once she has the freedom of living her life according to her own wishes. Syed Mazhar Ali’s character and his acting leave their marks even though he is given very little screen time. Paymaan and her step-father’s conversations are like that of two prisoners in a prison cell, one of them has given up hope but the other one wants things to change for good. I really liked the way the flashback scene was shown; it gave the viewers all the information they needed to know about what transpired between Shams and Tabassum many years back in a very short time.

Do share your thoughts about tonight’s episode.

Firaaq – Episode 16

0

After watching Mera Yakeen, Bari Apa, Hamnasheen and Shukk I thought I had seen it all but I guess I was very wrong! While watching this episode my husband’s curiosity got the best of him and he asked me who the first wife was … normally this should be an easy question to answer but in this case it isn’t! Firaaq was a good play but now everything about this play is just plain substandard. The dialogues have absolutely no depth any more in fact they can be really weird sometimes and Hareem’s character is the worst addition to the show. The fact that Imroze lied about his health was bad enough, there was absolutely no need to show that he got married again too. Watching this play is proving to be a nerve-racking experience, nothing about the story makes sense any more and you feel absolutely nothing for any of the characters. The fact that we are being shown two episodes in a go is even more testing.

1

Apparently, we are expected to forget about all of Imroze’s symptoms, his visits to the doctor and the crazy thought pattern and just be content with the “explanation” that Imroze lied about his disease so that Paymaan could get married to Roomi! But guess what? He forgot to divorce her! Kyunke biwi ko talaq di ja sakti hai mohabbat ko nahi! The writer might have forgotten it but I am sure many viewers must remember that Imroze showed Roomi some kind of a “death warrant” to prove that he wasn’t lying about the cancer. This latest “twist” in the story isn’t shocking but it is just plain unbelievable.

2

Paymaan went back to live with Imroze with a new will to get answers to all her questions but after hearing the answers she decided she did not want to leave just yet. Hareem’s mood swings are definitely not helping in any way. One minute she can’t do without Imroze and the next minute she has the divorce papers ready! Are we supposed to feel for Imroze by any chance? I have a feeling that the writer is trying very hard to convince us that whatever Imroze did was a result of whatever happened to him in the past and he only married Hareem out of sympathy – Paymaan is his true love, how lame is that!

Hareem’s dialogues like “mere du shohar, mere maa baap meri soch nahi badal sake tum kya badlo gi” are really very weird! Is she proud of the fact that she got married twice and never listened to her parents? Firaaq is a major train wreck. What was the writer thinking? I am finding it very hard to believe that this “Season 2” has been written by the same writer who wrote the beginning few episodes. The story has come down to a typical “two wives” scenario which will take all kind of bizarre turns before it finally ends. I hate to see Sanam Saeed wasting her talent playing such useless roles, Paymaan reminded me of Saniya so many times today!

Do share your thoughts about tonight’s nerve-racking episode of Firaaq! Is anyone out there feeling for Imroze? Does anyone understand what was going on in the writer’s mind when he added these strange, meaningless and groundless twists to the story?

Firaaq – Episode 15

0

I am not certain where to start from because a great deal happened in tonight’s episode but I am not sure if it is such a brilliant idea to open this Pandora’s box after 14 episodes! I am finding it very hard to relate to the new characters, I am not even sure if I care enough to know anything about their past or future at all because in the past 14 episodes we saw completely different faces in the drama. All the old faces have very nominal roles to play now. The viewers are left with no choice but to watch this drama with a completely different frame of mind – how many people out there are so “adaptable”?

So many episodes were wasted in convincing the viewers that Imroze was seriously sick, we were shown all the symptoms and doctor’s visit along with Imroze’s monologues for the longest time and now we find out that Imroze isn’t even dying! I must confess that all through tonight’s episode I tried very hard to make sense of things but everything was just too mind boggling.

firaaq

Imroze left Paymaan to marry his ex-wife and cousin because his Khala who also raised him asked him to look after her daughter after her death. He felt like Paymaan did not love him probably because his first wife left him for someone else therefore he left Paymaan so that she could marry Roomi. Now that Paymaan is back he is convinced that she loves him therefore he wants her back in his life. I found it very strange that someone like Imroze who is anything but honest or straightforward decided to come clean about everything.

Hareem is just as twisted as Imroze, they are definitely a match made in heaven! Hareem comes across as someone who is manipulative and self-centered. The way she shouted at her dying mother and the manner in which she kept on blaming Imroze and her ex-husband for all her problems went to show that she is not the sort of person who would take responsibility for her actions. Hareem’s character and Imroze and Hareem’s background story explains a lot about Imroze’s character but complicating matters so much at a time when the drama should actually be wrapping up can’t possibly be a wise idea!

firaaq

Hamza and Ahmed were given adequate screen time as well but even then I am finding it very hard to warm up to these characters. I missed Haider, Tabbasum and even Roomi while watching tonight’s episode. The events of the past it seems have hardly any relevance to the present and I have a bad feeling that the future is going to be just as bewildering. The script and the direction both have proved to be very disappointing to say the least! The director has completely failed to take the story forward in an intelligent way and the writer should have known better than to introduce so many different tracks and characters at this point.

The preview of the next episode clearly showed that we will have yet another first wife versus the second wife situation coming our way because the women in our dramas love fighting over losers. How can Paymaan possibly go back to Imroze? We were not shown even a day of Paymaan and Imroze’s married life and I have a bad feeling that we won’t even be shown why Paymaan decides to stay back with Imroze when she has the choice to leave him. Firaaq is a big fat mess now, no wonder HUM TV is so eager to wrap it up!

Did this episode give you a headache? Feel free to vent out!

Firaaq – Episode 14!

0

Ohkay so, that was one interesting episode of Firaaq. Just when I was thinking whether they have another set of interesting cards to reveal to keep the story going, they surprised me pleasantly. I like these new tracks & developments a lot more than the first half of the drama may be because all the mysteries related to the main character Imroz are getting unravelled one by one.

For a change it was good to see that Paymaan was being taken care of by the relatives in Pakistan. Paymaan’s quest was no less than a rollercoaster ride because she experienced all sorts of emotions which she mustn’t have imagined in her wildest dreams. She found out that Imroz has passed away & just when she felt her life was over & decided to go back to her family, she stumbled upon Imroz who looked perfectly fine. I think she was a bit too quick in trusting Imroz so easily because all he has ever told her are nothing but lies. Imroz thought he could intimidate her by the idea of an approaching death & that will make her run away but if he had known Paymaan’s determination, he wouldn’t have bothered trying. Paymaan knows what she lost & what she has found, so there’s no way she will ever let go off Imroz henceforth. I must say Sanam Saeed acted her bit brilliantly because the transition of Paymaan from being depressed to being overjoyed was portrayed by her beautifully & that made me feel for Paymaan a lot more than I ever have. The way Paymaan tried to keep her calm knowing that her world was falling apart & the way she had this contentment on her face after she found Imroz was a treat to watch. Who would’ve thought that a girl who has spent a major part of her life under a very dominating mother & someone who has never had a power to make her own decisions will now run the course of her life all alone & face all these challenges, that will either make or break her.

So, the mysterious Imroz is nothing short of mysteries & surprisingly, I am interested to find out more about him. I think all the cards are being revealed at a perfect time because it’s about time we got to know more about Imroz & what he has been up to. Just like Imroz effortlessly lied to Paymaan about him spending a time in a hotel & waiting for his death to come, he was concealing the reality as to why he moved back to Pakistan. Imroz has had a wife all these years who happens to have a son Hamza from her first marriage as well. I found Hareem (Hira) as a very considerate & caring wife who’d do anything to keep Imroz happy even if it means she has to stop her child from being playful & carefree. May be it’s because she has had a failed marriage before so this time around she is being extra cautious to not do anything that would upset her husband. It looks like Imroz is still unhappy & in fact a lot more rigid with Hareem in comparison to Paymaan. There are so many shades to his character that you really can’t form a definite opinion about him. Just because he faced his worst fears when he saw Paymaan in front of him, he had an outburst & used Hamza as an excuse because he knew Hareem was there to take whatever he’d have to say & wouldn’t retaliate. I think Hira actually has played the role of an obedient & caring wife to perfection. Right from the moment she made an entry I saw it all in her eyes; the intimidation, apprehension, cautiousness & restlessness which really made me sympathize with her & yes the emotion of love; love that she has for Imroz was evident too. I feel her story has a lot more to offer & it’s a fresh addition to the drama.

Hareem’s first husband didn’t seem as negative as Imroz tried to portray him. Ahmad (Adnan Jaffar) seemed like a harmless person & just a father who was attending to the duties he has in regards to his son but it was Imroz who thought he knew all that Ahmad was trying to do in order to create a rift between him & Hareem. Ever since the new life of Imroz has been revealed, I found all the other people as innocent victims whereas he was the one who was ruling negatively. One thing’s for sure, Imroz wants his things his way even if it means asking a mother to sacrifice her motherhood in order to please him.

The preview of next episode seemed very engaging as well. I think all the new entries have really contributed in making the serial a lot more interesting. In the first half, it was a couple of Tabassum & Haider that kept the things going but fortunately, in the second phase of the story, all the tracks seem equally interesting. I found this episode conveniently fast paced as well & thankfully they didn’t drag Paymaan’s depression either. Tell us how did you find the new developments in the story & share your thoughts about this episode of Firaaq, please.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

Firaaq – Episode 13

0

The developments in tonight’s episode of Firaaq were definitely very unexpected and interesting as well. I am sure that many viewers like me were expecting Roomi and Paymaan to get married in this episode which no doubt would have been a very unconvincing twist in the story. Roomi never loved Paymaan, if this marriage took place it would have been because of external influence than anything else. I am pleasantly surprised at the turn the story has taken, Tabbasum’s death was predictable after watching the preview of this episode last week but the way her death was covered was another pleasant surprise. The fact that most part of tonight’s episode focused on Tabbasum was most certainly the right thing to do since Tabbasum’s character has been the highlight of this drama and Uzma Gillani was absolutely brilliant right till the end. Tabbasum’s conversations with everyone in the family including Roomi wrapped up her track beautifully. Tabbasum made sure that Haider knew just how special he was, she apologized to Paymaan once again and asked her not to repeat the mistake she had made. The fact that these scenes were not over dramatic yet very touching made them a treat to watch. The void that Tabbasum left in Haider and Paymaan’s life was apparent from their body language and conversations but there was no excessive rona dhona which was great.

FotorCreated

Roomi decided to tell Paymaan the truth (finally!), which was another convincing development in the story. It would have been very unbelievable if he kept this secret to himself. We have been very confused about the timeline till now, it was nice to hear Sara clear that confusion! Imroze left Paymaan seven months back and Roomi talked to him five months back and then too he called to say goodbye. After finding out the truth Paymaan’s sole purpose in life is to find out what happened to Imroze. Sara’s obsession with getting Roomi and Paymaan married is still beyond me! Once again Sara focused all her energies on ensuring that these two end up together and refused to believe anything that Roomi said. I am glad that Roomi turned out to be smart and did not fulfill the dying wish of a friend without giving it a second thought.

It looks like Paymaan’s life in Karachi is going to be the main focus of the story from now on. The question whether Imroze has divorced Paymaan or not is still a mystery because when Paymaan was leaving for Pakistan Sara said to her that even if she finds Imroze there was no relationship between them anymore so there was no point in going there looking for him but in the preview of the next episode Paymaan said that she felt like a widow!

FotorCreated

I must say that Paymaan’s character is much more likeable and lively now that Imroze is out of her life and she has a new purpose in life. I felt for Haider more than anyone else while watching this episode. Overall, this was a pretty good episode which I am sure gave many viewers a reason to look forward to more. Is Imroze dead? If he isn’t then why didn’t he ever get in touch with Paymaan? A lot of questions need to be answered, I hope that the next episode is just as entertaining as this one and the story keeps on moving forward at this pace. I also hope that the mystery unravels in a way that is believable.

Firaaq – Episode 12

Things moved forward at a snail’s pace in the last few episodes but this episode was like a roller coaster ride!! The entire episode proved to be a visual treat but the pace at which the story moved forward was actually quite confusing. This was definitely an engaging episode which left me with a lot of questions but kept me glued to the TV screen nevertheless. Aabis Raza needs to learn the art of covering the developments in the story in such a way that they neither feel rushed nor too slow. The first half of the episode was perfect in every way; I could completely relate to Paymaan’s state of mind and after quite some time now Sanam Saeed was really into her character. Paymaan blamed herself instead of blaming Imroze. The way Paymaan’s family came to her support was touching and it made the whole scenario interesting rather than dull and depressing. Paymaan and Tabbasum’s reunion was shown beautifully too. Paymaan’s dialogues were written very well, they reminded me why I fell in love with this play in the first place. I felt like the old Paymaan who we saw in the first few episodes before she met Imroze was back once again; she was sad but she spoke her mind and that too in a way that was impressive. Paymaan looked for answers desperately but nothing could explain Imroze’s disappearance to her.

Roomi’s loyalty to his friend is surprising and almost unreal. I still find it impossible to relate to the fact that he has feelings for Paymaan. He isn’t well appreciated as a painter but he has a very lavish lifestyle, did he have a rich dad who left him with a lot of assets? Doesn’t he have a family? Looks like Paymaan and Shams are the only two people who have family in this drama. If Roomi is going to get married to Paymaan and if he has a family then they should be a part of this arrangement as well or maybe not!!

FotorCreated

Things started getting confusing in the second half of the play. When Sara suggested that Roomi and Paymaan should get married, I was shocked! I couldn’t help but wonder how much time had elapsed since Imroze left Paymaan because it all sounded too sudden and rather inappropriate. Sara did not even take Tabbasum into confidence before suggesting something so outrageous. Has Imroze divorced Paymaan? He told Roomi that he was going to divorce her but we did not hear anything of that sort in this episode. I hope that he did because otherwise if these two get married and he reappears at some point then everything will be very awkward! I have seen this happening in a few dramas and I don’t want it happening in Firaaq.

Overall, this episode was in no way perfect but definitely much better than my expectations. It would have been much better if things were not rushed in the second half of the play. Sanam Saeed performed really well in this episode and she looked beautiful too, I guess Imroze’s exit from the play may prove to be a good omen after all;) The preview of the next episode just like the previous few weeks gave the major developments in the story away. I am not going to go into the details of the preview here so that people who haven’t watched the episode yet can skip it if they wish to keep the suspense alive!

I didn’t miss Imroze one bit, did you? Do share your thoughts about this latest installment.

Firaaq – Episode 11

0

We can finally stop guessing what is wrong with Imroze because the cat is out of the bag. Imroze’s reaction was not surprising at all because we are all well aware of how negative he is by now, even the positive streak in him that was revealed when he asked Roomi to let Paymaan think that he left her because he was not loyal to her was not very convincing. A man must have a very big heart to make such a sacrifice even if he is about to die. We can only wonder if Imroze loved Paymaan enough to put himself through all this pain in order to ensure that his wife can move on and have a happy life because from the very first scene to the last one of Imroze and Paymaan’s life together we never saw them happy. Paymaan always felt like she was not good enough or that Imroze did not love her enough. Imroze’s character will most probably make its exit in the next episode and I still feel like the viewers weren’t even introduced to his character properly unlike all the other characters in the play. It is somewhat ironic that the writer and the director managed to cover the smallest details about the past and present of the side characters brilliantly without leaving any loop holes but failed to do the same for the man who is going to play a major role in changing the life of our leading lady. So, Imroze was all alone in this world after all, he did not have an ugly past or a dirty secret …. basically there wasn’t much to his character at all except that he was lonely, depressed, insecure and now very sick too and he only entered Paymaan’s life only to ruin it forever!

Untitled

Poor Roomi has yet again been given a huge responsibility and like a good friend he only questions Imroze’s future plans instead of revealing the truth to Paymaan. Roomi tried to make Imroze realize that he was being unfair to Paymaan but Imroze just wants to go away so that Roomi and Paymaan can have a happy life!! I must say that Imroze’s character had potential, if we could have been shown the good and the bad in him but all we saw was a lot of negativity which basically makes it impossible for me to feel for his character.

Tabbasum, Haider, Shams and Sara finally got their happy ending. It was quite predictable what Tabbasum had in store for Shams but the complete change in Shams’ stance regarding having a child came as a good surprise. It was good to see Tabbasum and Haider dance in joy but even these two loveable characters could not keep my interest in the story alive tonight. Things keep on moving forward in Firaaq but do they really make you look forward to more? I have to say not at all. There is too much talking in the play and most importantly our leading lady has become very dull. Tabbasum wants to mend fences with her daughter next and honestly speaking I am not looking forward to it one bit! Can Paymaan be any more berung? Do I want to see Roomi playing the savior yet again? I guess not! Roomi’s character is sweet but the story is too predictable and there is hardly any chemistry between Sanam Saeed and Noor Hassan. Why would someone like Roomi want to be with someone like Paymaan? I hope that the drama gives us something new and entertaining to watch in the upcoming episodes because for now there isn’t much I can connect to. The highlight of tonight’s episode was Shams and Sara’s reunion and it was nice to see Sara wearing Tabbasum’s wedding dress. Honestly speaking, I couldn’t care less about what was going on in the lives of our main protagonists – which is sad!!

Firaaq – Episode 10

0

After the last two episodes which were rather shocking and somewhat abrupt, with this episode the story moved forward in a more convincing manner although there were bits which still made you wonder about the issues Imroze has and also it seemed like everything was happening at once.

Shams’ reunion with her mother couldn’t have been shown in a better way. I had a bad feeling that the storyline may get even more complicated from here on but Tabbasum and Shams are off to a great start. Tabbasum tells one last thing which she thinks Shams should know before they start over again. The scenes between Tabbasum, Haider and Shams were very touching. Tabbasum will play a pivotal role in bringing Shams and Sara together, I am waiting to find out if Shams changes his stance regarding having children. I cannot help but praise Mazhar Ali’s convincing and natural acting over and over again. I really hope that we get to see him in dramas more often. Uzma Gillani like always was brilliant while showing how happy she was and how much Tabbasum has changed.

firaaq

Imroze and Paymaan looked like husband and wife for the first time today, we definitely needed to see more of such scenes in the previous episodes as well. Paymaan finally discovered the marks on Imroze’s body and questioned about them – better late than never! It was strange that everything happened at the same time, the reunion, Roomi realizing that people were using him and change in Imroze’s behaviour. Roomi realized that people treated him like a door-mat, he does not want to solve anyone’s marital problems or pick someone’s kid from school. This particular scene actually made me laugh! I am glad that Roomi finally showed some emotion other than being kind to people all the time, it’s about time that he got tired of playing the agony aunt! The second Imroze talked to Roomi, he was back to being a husband to Paymaan although in the last episode he was doubting his wife just as much as Roomi but for some odd reason which the viewers were not shown Imroze does not blame Paymaan for anything any more. He wants Roomi out of their life and start over again. I wish we could know the reason behind this sudden change in Imroze’s behaviour. We were shown Imroze thinking out loud over and over again about how his wife had cheated him and now all of a sudden without any thinking whatsoever he is convinced that Roomi is the only one to be blamed. Roomi’s lectures to Imroze regarding how he should be spending more time with his wife did not help at all! I must admit I did feel for Roomi after watching tonight’s episode.

The way Imroze felt about the change in Paymaan’s outlook and the scene on the beach went to show that Imroze is a very conservative person which could also be because of his insecurities. He tells Roomi that he never wanted to marry someone modern and then later on the beach he says to Paymaan that everyone was looking at her. Well, at least we know now why Imroze fell for Paymaan!

The preview of the next episode was a big blunder because it practically showed everything that is going to happen in the next episode. I am not going to share the details here so that the viewers who have not seen this episode yet have the option of not watching the preview because if they do then they surely will have very little reason to watch the next episode! The only mystery is finding out which disease Imroze has otherwise we pretty much know now what turn the story is going to take from here.

Firaaq – Episode 1

0

This first episode was very engaging; it kept me glued to my TV screen right from the get-go. Drama serial Firaaq has been written by Mustafa Afridi, directed by Aabis Raza and produced by MD Productions. The first episode introduced the viewers to all the main characters in the drama and their backgrounds. The main protagonist of the play Payman (Sanam Saeed) is a Pakistani American who may have been living in America for a long time but her controlling and conservative mother (Uzma Gillani) does not allow her to adopt anything that is American. Not only that, Payman has grown up in a very strict environment, she is constantly judged and criticized. Payman is not happy with her life because of her situation. Her mother has a very desi set-up in which she is the boss of the house. Her second husband plays a second fiddle to her because she runs a restaurant and runs the house therefore she has no respect or regard for him either (anyone remember Bilquees Kaur?). Yes, Uzma Gillani’s character reminded me of Bilquess Kaur because Bilquees’ husband and children used to get the same treatment from her too. Bilquees was also loud and bossy and she had a very desi set-up in her house. The only big difference is that Payman’s mother is not playing the lead in the drama and she is probably not going to be around for long either but her character definitely seemed to be inspired from Bilquees Kaur’s character. Payman’s step-father (Syed Mazhar Ali) on the other hand is a very soft-spoken and easy going person. It was great to see Syed Mazhar Ali on screen after a long time.

firaaq

Payman’s brother Shams (Junaid Khan) left his mother’s house when she remarried after her husband’s death. Sham’s wife Sara (Cybil Chaudhry) wants to have kids but Shams made it very clear to her before they got married that he did not want any children. Sara meets a family friend (Noor Hassan) and shares her worries with him and he suggests that she should see a counselor. The counselor (Mohib Mirza) suggests that Sara’s troubles will only be over if she can reunite Shams with his mother. Personally, I did not agree with the advice at all because anyone with such an authoritative, suspicious and unreasonable mother would not want to have kids because they would not be sure if they will be able to give that child the kind of life which every child deserves. I felt like Shams is too afraid that he may not be able to be a good father that is why he does not want kids. Anyway, Sara decides to meet Shams’ mother and what an interesting meeting that was! Shams’ mother may regret losing her son but she is not very eager to win him back either!

The preview of the next episode promised another happening episode therefore I am definitely looking forward to it. Sara’s plan to get the mother and son back together is going to backfire in the worst way possible. Sanam Saeed looked really cute in those glasses and she owned her character. I could feel all the pent up anger and frustration in her expressions, body language and voice. When I first heard Cybil Chaudry talk I thought her voice was dubbed but by the end of the episode I liked her character and acting. Junaid Khan is not among my favorite actors but he is definitely well-suited for this role. I am waiting to see more of Mohib Mirza and Noor Hassan.

Overall, this was a very promising beginning. All the scenes were short and to-the-point , the characters are interesting, the story has potential and the episode was very well-directed. It was refreshing to see so many talented young actors on-screen. I wish people who are responsible for writing the plots of dramas online would not have access to more information than the viewers would like to know. I read the plot summary online and now I know exactly what is going to happen next! I highly recommend this first episode to anyone who has not watched it yet.

So it sums up the movies lined up for the summer. It will be interesting to see how cine goers respond to these films. Success/failure of these films will determine the future course of our infant film industry. Like if Bin Roye proves successful, it will pave the way for more social/drama films. Success of Wrong No, Halla Gulla type films will definitely result in increase in comedy masaala films.

All in all it is encouraging to see so many film makers have taken a risk by investing in local film industry. Now its up to audience and cine goers to play their part to also support the local cinema in a same manner many among us show solidarity with Bollywood.

Films releasing on Eidul Fitr

Eidul Fitr is a festive occasion in our country. Apart from religious significance it is an event of family gathering and other festivities as well. Traditionally our film makers reserve their premier productions for Eid for which cinema bookings are done months ago. From past two decades local cinema has declined considerably and since 2006 this space is filled by Bollywood movies.

This Eid, a mix of Bollywood (Hindi), Urdu (Karawood, Lollywood), Punjabi and Pashto films are releasing. These films will be released on multiplexes and single screen cinemas across the country.

Bollywood – Bajrangi Bhaijaan
Bollywood films are extremely popular among film viewers and has always been a preferred choice of Pakistani cine goers. Last year on Eidul Fitr, Bollywood movie Kick starring Salman Khan kicked off all the rival films on box office, earning huge revenues as well. Bollywood films do great business on multiplexes as well as traditional single screen cinemas, definitely the first choice of all the classes and sections of our society. The major market of Bollywood films is Punjab, Sindh and Federal Capital Islamabad.

This year another Salman Khan starer film Bajrangi Bhaijaan is releasing. Advertised as the “Biggest Film of The Eidul Fitr” it is expected to make new records of revenue collection during the Eid holidays like Bollywood films had made in previous years.

Pakistan’s leading English papers like Dawn, Express Tribune, The News as well as Urdu papers Jang, Express, Dunya have already published enough insights of Bajrangi Bhaijan, like the music, the cast, story, trailer, on-set events, controversies etc. which reflects the excitement that persists in our media and public regarding this film.

BR

Karawood – Urdu
Karachi is emerging as a new hub of Urdu film making. Last year on Eidul Azha, Namaloom Afraad produced in Karachi became a mega hit. This Eid two Karawood films are being released.

Bin Roye (بن روۓ)
A romantic film, Bin Roye stars Mahira Khan, Humayun Saeed, Armeena Rana Khan in the lead roles. Produced by Hum Tv it is being released simultaneously in Pakistani, UAE, UK, USA and India (Except the state of Maharashtra)

Wrong Number (رانگ نمبر)

A comedy formula film Wrong Number stars Danish Taimoor, Sohai Ali Aabroo and Janita Asima in leading roles. It is the first film directed by the Yasir Nawaz. Danish Taimoor appearing in double role in this role.

Lollywood – Urdu/Punjabi
Lahore has been the traditional centre of film making in Pakistan. However in recent years film making is almost halted in Lahore. This year few low budget Urdu and Punjabi films produced in Lahore are releasing. All these films are only releasing in Punjab.

Bazaar (بازار)
A low budget Urdu film, Bazaar comprises relatively unknown names in the lead cast. Ahmed Butt is playing the male lead.

Razia Ghundon Mein Phans Gayee (رضیہ غنڈوں میں پھنس گئی)
A Punjabi film releasing in few cinemas of Lahore, and other cities in Punjab. The film features stage artists from different cities of Punjab.

Pollywood – Pashto Films
Pashto films are popular in areas having large concentration of Pashto speakers. Pashto films are released in the cities of Peshawar, Mardan, Bannu, Swat, Quetta and Karachi only in single screen cinemas. As compared to Urdu/Punjabi films Pashto films are regularly released outside Pakistan in Dubai (UAE) and Kabul (Afghanistan).

This Eid seven Pashto films are releasing in Pakistan, Afghanistan and UAE. The name of these Pashto films are Ma Cherra Ghareeb Sara, Daagh, I love you too, Pakhtun Pah Dubai Ke, Khanadaani Badmaah, Maien Kho Lewanai Vee and Sar Tair Badmaash. Pashto films have low budgets and even if flop, a Pashto film easily recovers its cost.

Films releasing on Eidul Fitr

Eidul Fitr is a festive occasion in our country comprising of multiple (3 – 4) holidays every year. These holidays result in a long weekend which proves a lucrative window for cinema business. Friends, Families, Individuals pour in to watch their favorite stars and films during these holidays. Traditionally film producers present their premier productions on such occasion.

The long weekend of the Eid provide a strong opening to the films released and even after the Eid holidays if the film fails to sustain its business, it has already earned reasonable amount during the Eid holidays. During Eid holidays all the cine goers want to watch some film and even if they fail to get the ticket of their favorite film, they watch the other film and thus every film benefits from Eid holidays.

Here is the compilation of the Eid releases with a minor comparison with the films released on Eidul Fitr last year.

Bollywood – Sultan
Bollywood films are the life line of the cinema industry of the Pakistan. Their consistent success in Pakistan has helped reviving the dying cinema industry in our country. Seeing the favorable response these films receive in Pakistan, many investors are investing in this field by constructing new multiplexes. Construction of the new multiplexes is in full flow at large and small urban centers in Punjab, Sindh and Islamabad which are the major circuit of the Bollywood films.

Bollywood films in general perform very well in its opening week. But Bollywood films starring any Khan proves super successful in Pakistan. Last year on Eidul Fitr Salman Khan starer Bajrangi Bhaijan proved blockbuster and earned around 23 – 24 crores a massive figure on Pakistani box office.

Sultan-0

Due to their popularity Bollywood films are allocated maximum number of shows at premier time slots in all cinema houses and multiplexes. This Eid another Salman Khan starer Sultan is releasing and like every year it is expected to earn huge. Sultan is the based on the life of an Indian wrestler.

Urdu film
In recent years locally made Urdu films are gradually gaining foot hold at the box office. Last year two Urdu films Wrong No and Bin Roye were released on Eidul Fitr which despite allocation of few shows performed very well. Wrong No earned 15 crore and Bin Roye earned 10 crore in Pakistan. Apart from local market, success of Bin Roye was overwhelming overseas especially in UK where it earned more than the local earnings. Both Wrong No and Bin Roye were produced in Karachi.

This year again two Urdu films are lined up for release named Swaal 700 Crore Dollar Ka and Khushi. Swaal 700 Crore Dollar Ka is the only major film to be released nationwide, while Khushi is a low budget film which will only release in Punjab.

Another major film of Eid was Blind Love which is now delayed to 29th July 2017. Screening of a giant Bollywood film like Sultan leaves limited screen space for Urdu films and thus Blind Love is delayed.

Though this film has nothing to do with the politics but its name is quite relevant to the current political scenario of our country
where the scandal of the off shore companies is leading the news.

Punjabi Films
Punjabi is the largest spoken language in Pakistan. Punjabi cinema was once the life line of our film industry. However the popularity of the Punjabi cinema has almost completely faded in the last decade. Two low budget Punjabi films are releasing on this Eid. Pashto Films
Pashto is the second largest spoken language in Pakistan and has a thriving cinema too though the quality of Pashto films is considered very low. The circuit of Pashto cinema is limited but has a dedicated audience and most of the Pashto films easily recover their expenditure.

Pashto films are released in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Peshawar, Mardan, Noshehra, Swat), Balochistan (Quetta only) and Sindh (Karachi Only). Pashto films are also released in Afghanistan and UAE which have a large Pahsto speaking population. Films releasing on Eidul Azha

0

Eidul Azha is a festive occasion in our country.

Bollywood
Any festive occasion without a Bollywood film, is something that seldom happens in Pakistan (like Blue Moon). Due to huge demand of Bollywood films, at-least one Bollywood film is a must release. Only one Bollywood film is releasing this Eidul Azha, like Eidul Fitr. On Eidul Fitr only one Bollywood film Bajrangi Bhaijan was screened, which was allotted the lion’s share in the number of screens to release. The film exceeded all the expectations and has done splendid business and is the most successful film for the year 2015 in Pakistan by earning nearly 22.5 crore (unconfirmed statistics).

1901587_65491532

This year, a Bollywood film named “kis kis se pyar karoon” is releasing. It stars famous Indian comedian Kapil Sharma. Kapil Sharma’s television show is quite popular in Pakistan and the film is expected to do well like any other Bollywood film released in Pakistan.

Urdu Films
A total of three Urdu films are releasing on this Eid produced in Karachi and Lahore

Karawood
Both films produced in Karachi are commercial films of comedy genre. On Eidul Fitr, another comedy film Wrong No, also produced in Karachi proved quite successful. Wrong No. is the most successful Urdu film of the year and so as per unconfirmed reports has earned more than 14 crores.

Both Urdu films produced in Karachi are releasing in multiplexes as well as single screen cinemas.

Punjabi films
Two low budget formula Punjabi films are lined up for this Eidul Azha. Formula Punjabi films have their own dedicated circuit, and normally they recover their cost easily. Like a routine Punjabi formula film both these films are full of similar stuff like violence, steamy dances, loud dialog. Punjabi films are only released in traditional single screen cinemas. The name of the films are Sohna Gujjar (starring Moammar Rana) and Ishq De Qaidi.

Pashto films
Pashto film industry is the most successful and vibrant film circuit of Pakistan. In recent years the number of Pashto films have out numbered the Punjabi and Urdu films. Pashto films have a dedicatd circut in the three provinces i.e. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Peshawar, Mardan, Swat, Charsadda, Noshehra), Balochistan (Quetta only) and Sindh (Karachi only). Hollywood films
Like Punjabi and pashto films, Hollywood films also have their dedicated market in Pakistan. Hollywood films are screened in big urban centres of Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad normally in multiplexes. Every multiplex has a dedicated screen equipped with the latest technology like IMAX for such Hollywood films. This Eid two Hollywood films are releasing namely Everest and Dinosaur Island.

Films releasing in July 2016

The first half of the year 2016 has passed and the second half has started. The progress of Pakistani cinema in the first half was a mixed one, there were very few films nearly 10 released while only two proved successful i.e. Ho Mann Jahan and Bachaana. One reason for such low number of film was the Holy month of Ramadan due to which no film was released in June. Also February and March saw two big cricketing events i.e. Pakistan Super League and ICC T20 World Cup which resulted in the less number of movies.

Coming to the ongoing month of July 2016, four films are announced to be released in this month. One film is already released on Eidul Fitr while three others will be released in coming weeks.

Muhabbat Andhi Hoti Hai (Love is Blind) is a popular phrase and perhaps Blind Love is the visual form of this phrase. The leading heroine (Nimra Khan) of the film is blind and thus her romance is named as Blind Love (how creative!), though the film is not limited to romance it has all the masala required for the commercial film.

Blind Love is directed by Faisal Bukhari who is known for pure formula films.Faisal Bukhari’s last two films were also pure commercial flicks i.e. Bhai Log (2011) and Sultanat (2014). Following the same pattern Blind Love has romance, emotions, songs, dances, a bit of action, scenic locations and on top of it a steamy item number Butter Jawani (seems to be conceived in a bakery) which off course is shot on Mathira.

Blind Love will be the debut film for Yasir Shah, Imran Bukhari, Nimra Khan, Fawad Jalal and Aamir Qureshi. Aamir Qureshi is playing the role of the villain in this film like his father Mustafa Qureshi who is the most well known villain of the Pakistani films.

Mathira is making a comeback to films after a gap of three years. She last appeared in the film Main Hoon Shahid Afridi (MHSA) in 2013 for a 2-3 minute appearance in the item song Masti Mein Doobi. After a wait of three long years she is starting the journey again from where it was left and is again performing an item number Butter Jawani in Blind Love. However unlike MHSA she also has a negative vamp like role in this film. Means finally apart from her dance at last one can see the acting talent of Mathira on big screen too.

So these are all the four Urdu films scheduled to release in July 2016.

Films releasing in April, May 2016

The first quarter (Jan – Mar) of the year 2016 has passed which proved rather dismal when comes to the number of Urdu films released. At the start of the year 2016, six Urdu films were announced to be released till March.

January – Ho Mann Jahan (1st January), Badal Revenge of the Worthless (15th January), Hijrat (22 January)
February – Fiker Not (11 February), Bachaana (26 February 2016)
March – Salute (23rd March 2016)

However only three Urdu films are released in the first quarter of 2016 i.e Ho Mann Jahan (1st January 2016), Bachaana (26th February 2016) and Fiker Not (11th March 2016). Out of these Ho Mann Jahan and Bachaana proved successful, while Fiker Not a low budget film proved dead flop.

Ho Mann Jahan earned nearly 21 crore (16 crore in Pakistan and 5 crore in the rest of the world), while Bachaana earned around 8.50 crore.

One major reason for such low numbers of releases was two back to back cricket tournaments. In February 2016, the first edition of Pakistan Super League was organized which was followed by the Cricket T20 World Cup in March 2016. Due to these cricketing events, release of few films was postponed.

Now the second quarter for 2016 has started in which four Urdu films are announced to be released in April and May. Due to the Holy month of Ramazan no film is releasing in June.

Films on Eidul Fitr 2018

0

2018 has so far proved a mixed year for the Pakistani cinema with few hit and miss films. The last major Urdu film of 2018 was Motorcycle Girl released almost two months ago on 20th April 2018. No Urdu film was released in May 2018 due to the holy Islamic Month of Ramazan. The two month long dry season will be over on upcoming Eidul Fitr 2017 where a handsome number of films are releasing. Eidul Fitr is the major festive occasion in our country followed by Eidul Azha. It is the time of joy, family reunion, outing, recreation and vacation. The long holidays of Eidul Fitr benefit the entertainment industry as well majorly cinemas and theaters. To utilize these holidays the big banner films are scheduled to release on Eid. Eidul Fitr has historically been the most successful time for the Pakistani cinema in an year. However from past one decade, Eidul Azha has overtaken the Eidul Fitr with respect to the business of local films. The major films which were once specific to Eidul Fitr are now shifted to Eidul Azha. The most significant reason is the direct competition with the Bollywood Eid film. Every Eidul Fitr some Khan starer Bollywood film gallops the bulk of the cinema shows and business. On 2015’s Eidul Fitr, Bollywood’s Bajrangi Bhaijan (BB) emerged blockbuster. Due to the enormous success of BB, many shows of the two Urdu films Bin Roye and Wrong No. also released on Eidul Fitr were shifted to BB. Though eventually Wrong No. and Bin Roye also proved successful but their business was impacted by BB. On 2016’s Eidul Fitr, Bollywood’s Sultan made many new records of collections like most earning in a single day, most earning on a weekend. The film earned around 34 crore and became the highest earning Bollywood film in the Pakistan. Two Urdu films Swaal 700 Crore Dollar Ka (SSCDA) and Blind Love were also due to release on Eidul Fitr in 2016. But due to unavailability of shows Blind Love was not released and the only film SSCDA struggled against Bollywood’s Sultan. The situation changed in 2017 as the government has not allowed the release of Bollywood Eid film Tubelight and hence no Bollywood film was released on Eidul Fitr 2017. This year Eidul Fitr will fall on 15th or 16th June 2018 Here is the summary of the films coming on Eidul Fitr. Hollywood Hollywood films are only released in the multiplexes having 3D screens. Hollywood films have their own dedicated audience. This Eidul Fitr only one Hollywood film Jurrasic World – Fallen Kingdom is releasing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vn9mMeWcgoM Bollywood: No release Like 2017, no Bollywood film is releasing on Eidul Fitr. In 2017, the government did not allow the release of Bollywoods’ Tubelight on the Eidul Fitr. There was no official statement on its release and it was expected to hit theaters after two weeks of Eid. However Tubelight‘s business was not as per expectations in India and the rest of world and consequently the film was not released in Pakistan even after Eidul Fitr. This year the Federal Government has defined the regulations of films releasing on Eid. As per the official notification released three weeks ago, no Bollywood film will be screened till after two weeks on both Eidul Fitr and Eidul Azha. However last week upon the pressure of Bollywood’s film distributors the government has reduced the ban to one week. The 2018 Bollywood’s Eid release is Race 3 which now will release in Pakistan on 22nd/23rd June 2018 one week after Eidul Fitr. Bollywood films have an all-seasons and all-weathered loyal audience in Pakistan across all sections of the society. Despite hostile aggression from India on borders Bollywood films earn huge in Pakistan from the posh areas multiplexes to crowded areas old single screen cinemas. The prime example of the bonding of the Bollywood fans in Pakistan is the business of 2016 Eidul Fitr’s release Sultan which earned a mammoth 34 crore in three weeks and became the highest earning Bollywood film in Pakistan to-date. Before its release filmi circles were predicting a possible low turn out for the film as Indian army butchered around 120 Kashmiris in the Indian held Kashmir within a week around Eidul Fitr while thousands of Kashmiris lost eye sight due to the use of the pallet guns by the Indian forces. Despite continued state terrorism and blood bath in Kashmir on Eidul Fitr 2016 by the Indian forces, Sultan received a massive response on Eidul Fitr in Pakistan. The film registered the largest ever opening weekend for any film by earning 7.5 crore in just four days again proving the massive appeal of Bollywood films in Pakistan. So even though Race3 will release one week after the Eidul Fitr, the film distributors are hopeful about its massive business. Films on Eidul Fitr 2018 Urdu films Urdu is the national language spoken in all the regions of Pakistan and Urdu cinema is gradually recovering after its extinction in the last decade. In 2017 two Urdu films Yalghaar and Mehrunnisa V Lub U (MVLU) were released. In the absence of the Bollywood film both proved successful where Yalghaar earned 17-19 crore and MVLU earned 13 crore. The main business circuit of Urdu films is Sindh, Punjab and Islamabad Capital Territory. Urdu films have a limited release in the cantonment areas of Balochistan and KPK In the absence of any Bollywood film, four Urdu films were announced to be released on the Eidul Fitr 2018. For almost five decades Punjabi cinema has proved to be the backbone of our cinema and film industry. The success of Punjabi films also provided a space for Urdu cinema to flourish. However after Urdu cinema, Punjabi film making has also been extinct till the end of last decade. Unlike Urdu cinema there has been no considerable effort to revive the Punjabi cinema. Every year very few Punjabi films of inferior quality are produced which hardly add any value towards the dysfunct Punjabi cinema. Three Punjabi films are expected to release on this Eid which are traditional gandasa films. The punjabi films will only release in the Punjab province. The name of the Punjabi films are Faisla Gujjar Da (فیصلہ گجر دا), Malik Bahadur (ملک بہادر) and Market (مارکیٹ). The trailers of the Punjabi films are not available online. Films on Eidul Fitr 2018 Pashto Films Pashto is the second largest spoken language in Pakistan after Punjabi. Pashto cinema was the third most successful film circuit after Punjabi and Urdu films. Unlike Urdu and Punjabi cinema which faded a decade ago, Pashto cinema has survived well despite dismal situation of law and order in its circuit. Pashto cinema seldom gets the attention of the mainstream media, still Pashto films have successfully retained their viewership . Pashto cinema has its own dedicated circuit in the province of KPK, Balochistan (Quetta) and Sindh (Karachi only) where native Pashto speaker live in large numbers. Apart from Pakistan, Pashto films sometimes are also released in UAE (Dubai/Sharjah) and Afghanistan (Kabul). The leading artists of the Pashto cinema are Shahid Khan, Jahangir Jani, Arbaaz Khan and Ajab Gull. Four Pashto films are expected to release on this film namely Paidageer (پیدا گیر)  , Ziddi O Badmash (ضدی او بدمعاش), Zandaan (زندان) and Kashar Khan Loafar Da (کشر خان لوفر دے). The trailer of all these Pashto films are available online, but here only one poster is added. Films on Eidul Fitr 2018 So it sums up this compilation of the films coming on Eidul Fitr. All the four Urdu films of Eid are of diverse genre so hopefully we can find one of our choice. Wish all the readers a happy and prosperous Eidul Fitr. Keep supporting Pakistani cinema. Thanks for your time.   Rashid Nazir Ali

Films on Eidul Fitr 2017

2017 has so far proved a dismal year with respect to local cinema. A total of five main stream Urdu films are released in this year all of which failed to do any considerable business. Thora Jee Le (January), Whistle (February), Balu Mahi (February), Raasta (March) and Chalay Thay Saath (April) are the five movies released this year where no Urdu film was released in the month of May. Due to the Holy Muslim month of Ramazan no film is scheduled throughout the major part of June as well.

Chalay Thay Saath the last released Urdu film of 2017 was released on 21st April 2017. So from 21st April 2017 to 26th June 2017 it has been a two month dry season for Urdu cinema.

The two major festive occasion in our country are the Eidul Fitr and Eidul Azha which spread over atleast three holidays. These long holidays provide ample time for family reunion and outing plans, which in result benefit the entertainment industry including cinema and theaters.

To cash on these holidays the major films of the year are scheduled for Eid. Eidul Fitr has traditionally been the occasion when the most successful film of the year was released. However from past one decade, Eidul Azha has won the priority of the Urdu film makers.

The major Urdu films which once were specific to Eidul Fitr are now released on Eidul Azha. The most significant reason is the direct competition with the Bollywood film. Every Eidul Fitr a major Khan (Salman or Shahrukh) starring Bollywood film is also released which eats up the majority of the shows and revenue of Eidul Fitr holidays.

On 2015’s Eidul Fitr, Bollywood’s Bajrangi Bhaijan (BB) emerged blockbuster. Due the enormous success of BB, many shows of the two Urdu films Bin Roye and Wrong No. also released on Eidul Fitr were shifted to BB.

Thus to avoid direct competition with the Eid release of Bollywood, major Urdu film makers are opting for Eidul Azha over Eidul Fitr. However this year few big budgeted Urdu films are releasing on Eidul Fitr. The performance of these Urdu films might determine the future of scheduling of Urdu films on Eidul Fitr. If successful the noted film makers might opt Eidul Fitr again over Eidul Azha.

Here is a summary of the films coming on Eidul Fitr 2017

Bollywood: Tubelight
Bollywood films have a proven solid market in Pakistan. The loyalty of Bollywood fans in Pakistan is unmatched that even the tense relationship of India and Pakistan hardly impact the business of Bollywood films in Pakistan. The only Bollywood Eid release of 2017 is Tubelight starring Salman Khan. Due to a history of the overwhelming response towards Khan starer Bollywood films, the premier show times at cinemas are allotted to these films. Like the Bollywood films released on Eid in previous years Tubelight is expected to outshine all the other films on this Eidul Fitr too.

Due to the pressure of local film makers Tubelight might will see a delayed release after few days of Eid to provide space for local films.

As per press reports Tubelight is based on the 1962 war fought between Indian and China. This war resulted in a humiliating defeat for India and as a result relationship among India and China are still not friendly.

Bollywood films enjoy widespread success at major and small urban centers, modern multiplexes and traditional single screen cinemas alike. The main business hub of Bollywood films is the provinces of Punjab, Sindh and the Islamabad Capital Territory.

Urdu Films
Urdu is the national language of Pakistan and Urdu cinema is gradually recovering after its extinction in the last decade. In 2016 only one Urdu films SSCDA was released on Eidul Fitr which failed to leave any impact. However situation looks promising as two big budgeted Urdu films are releasing on this Eidul Fitr. A third film Shor Sharaba was also announced on Eid but later pulled back.

The main business circuit of Urdu films is Sindh, Punjab and Islamabad Capital Territory. Urdu films have a limited appeal in the provinces of Balochistan and KPK

Yalghaar (یلغار)

Punjabi Films
Punjabi is the largest spoken language in Pakistan.

Every year very few Punjabi films of inferior quality are produced which hardly add any value towards the disfunct Punjabi cinema.

Two Punjabi films are expected to release on this Eid which are traditional gandasa films. The punjabi films will only release in the Punjab province.

Films on Eidul Azha 2017

The festive occasion of Eidul Azha is coming on the Saturday 2nd September 2016 where four holidays from 1st September 2017 – 4th September 2017 are announced by the federal government. Such long holiday season provides a favorable window for film business.

Any such long holidays like Eidul Fitr, Eidul Azha, Christmas, Independence Day come with the screening of some big banner movies. Among all such long holidays; in recent times Eidul Azha has emerged as the most successful time of the year for the Pakistani cinema.

Since the so-called revival of Urdu cinema from 2013, the most successful Urdu film of the year has been released on Eidul Azha. The main factor for this can be the absence of a big banner Bollywood movie. On Eidul Fitr normally a Khan starer big banner Bollywood film is released which takes the lion share of screen shows and business thus reducing the chances of any local film. So it makes Eidul Azha more lucrative for local film makers and viewers.

From 2013, Eidul Azha holidays have seen massive business by local releases.
2013 > Waar earned a mammoth 23 crore in Pakistan and became the most successful Urdu film ever
2014 > Namaloom Afraad earned 12 – 13 crore to become the highest earning Pakistani film of 2014
2015> Jawani Phir Nahin Aani earned around 35 crore and became the most successful Pakistani film ever.
2016> Actor In Law earned around 24 crore to become the highest earning film of 2016. The second highest earning Urdu film of 2016 Janaan (which earned 17 crore in Pakistan) was also released on Eidul Azha. So collectively the Eidul Azha films earned between 40 – 45 crore in total in the local market. These films also earned well abroad in Europe and North America.

With such favorable response, the leading film makers target Eidul Azha holidays for their high budgeted films. This Eidul Azha two big budgeted Urdu films are releasing while one Urdu film is re-releasing.

Apart from Urdu, regional films in Pashto and Punjabi are also releasing on this Eid. Two Bollywood films are also releasing on this Eidul Azha. Though Eidul Azha is coming on Saturday 2nd September 2017, but all these films are releasing on Friday 1st September 2017 which starts the Eidul Azha holiday weekend.

So lets go through the films coming on this Eidul Azha.

Bollywood Films

Bollywood films are the life line of the Pakistani cinema industry. The consistent performance of Bollywood films in Pakistani cinemas has provided stability to this industry and has also attracted new investment. Bollywood films are very popular among local cine goers and attract viewers from all sections of society.

Two Bollywood Hindi films are releasing on this Eid which are Badshaho (بادشاہو) and Beimaan Love (بے ایمان لو). Normally the Bollywood film released on Eidul Fitr leads the business race against the local Urdu films. However the Bollywood films released on Eidul Azha have not been able to earn more than the local Urdu films. So if Bollwood film is the winner on Eidul Fitr, the winner on Eidul Azha is the local Urdu films.

Films on Eidul Azha 2017

Lets see the performance of Bollywood Eidul Azha releases since 2013.

In 2013, Waar earned 23 crore while Bollywood film Boss earned less than 10 crore
In 2014, Namaloom afraad earned 13 crore while Bollywood film Bang Bang earned less than 10 crore
In 2015, Jawani Phir Nahin Aani earned between 35 crore – 40 crore while Bollwood film Kis Kis ko Pyar karoon only earned around 6 – 7 crore
In 2016, all three Urdu films Actor In Law (24 crore), Janaan (17 crore) and Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai (7 crore) earned more than the Bollywood film Baar Baar Dekho (3 – 4 crore)

As per the press reports out of the two Bollywood releases i.e. Baadshaho and Beimaan Love, Baadshaho is expected to earn more.

Urdu films

Urdu is the national language of Pakistan which is spoken and understood in all the provinces and regions of Pakistan.

The main business circuit of Urdu films is the Provinces of Sindh, Punjab and the Islamabad Capital Territory. Urdu films see a limited release in the provinces of KPK and Balochistan. In KPK and Balochistan, Urdu films are only screened in few cinemas of Cantonment area.

This Eidul Fitr two new Urdu films are releasing. Both these films are high budgeted big banner movies. One Urdu film is re-releasing on this Eid as well.

Punjab Nahin Jaongi (پنجاب نہیں جاؤں گی)

Punjab Nahin Jaongi (PNJ) is produced by almost the same team of Jawani Phir Nahin Aani (JPNA) released on Eidul Azha 2015. JPNA proved blockbuster and to date is the highest earning film of Pakistan in any language.

Like JNPA, PNJ also stars Humayun Saeed and Mehwish Hayat in the lead while Nadeem Baig is the director. The major highlight of PNJ is the writer Khalilur Rehman Qamar (KRQ). KRQ last wrote the film Koi Tujh Sa Kahan in 2005, so PNJ marks his comeback on the big screen after a long gap of 12 years.KRQ is known for his powerful and insightful dialogs and his fans surely expect a quality script here.

Sohail Ahmed a famous name of Punjabi commercial stage is also making a comeback on the big screen after a long time. Seasoned artist Naveed Shahzad who seldom works in dramas is also making her big screen debut. Saba Hameed is also returning to the big screen after a decade where her debut film Mein Ek Din Laut Ke Aaonga was released in 2007.

Azfar Rehman a well known name of television is also appearing as secondary hero in this film. It is his first prominent appearance on big screen, earlier he done a cameo in the film Manto (2015). Urwa Hocane who last appeared in Namaloom Afraad in 2014 is appearing in a film after a gap of three years from PNJ. Ahmad Butt is also playing a prominent role in PNJ.

PNJ is a film of family drama genre. The film is shot in the cities of Bahawalpur and Karachi and is expected to attract the viewers in the circuit of Punjab as well as Karachi.

In the recent years few films of Family Drama genre have proved successful like Bin Roye (2015), Ho Mann Jahan (2016) and Janaan (2016).

Namaloom Afraad 2 (نامعلوم افراد 2)

Namaloom Afraad 2 (NMA2) is the sequel of superhit Namaloom Afraad released on Eidul Azha 2014. NMA2 features almost the same cast which were in NMA namely Javed Sheikh, Fahad Mustafa, Mohsin Abbas Haider and Urwa Hocane. Nayyer Ejaz is appearing in a prominent role in NMA2, he had a cameo appearance in NMA.

The character of Amber Khan (wife of Javed Sheikh) in NMA has been shown dead and Marina Khan will be paired opposite Javed Sheikh in NMA2. Marina Khan is a well known face of the television dramas and NMA2 is her debut film.

The character of Kubra Khan is also not part of NMA2, instead Hania Aamir will appear in NMA2 paired opposite Mohsin Abbas Haider. Marina Khan and Hania Aamir are playing mother and daughter in NMA2.

NMA also featured Mehwish Hayat in the item song Billi. In NMA2, the super model Sadaf Kanwal is doing the dance number Kaifo Suroor.

Like NMA, NMA2 is also a comedy film. In the recent years films of comedy genre have proved the most popular genre in local Urdu films followed by films of action and family drama genre. So NMA2 is expected to give a tough competition to PNJ on Eidul Azha.

NMA2 is the third film from the producer Fizza Ali Meerza and director Nabeel Qureshi. Their previous two films NMA(2014) and Actor In Law (2016) were also released on Eidul Azha and proved the highest earning films of the respective year.
