Some writers write for depicting the real picture of our society through their writings while others write to create a lasting impression. Fortunately, Umera Ahmed has both the qualities and this very quality is also reflected in the dramas based on stories which she wrote. Her writings are not only true representative of our culture and our society but, also at the same time they touch our hearts and souls. Her words flow like sweet musical lyrics in her novels and many people even draw inspiration from the innocent lead characters which she creates. The dramas based on her written novels are equally influential. Whether it be Man-o-Salwa, Lahasil, Amar Bail, Husna Aur Husn Ara, Meri Zaat Zarai benishan, Mai Ne Khawabon Ka Shajar Dekha Hai, Muthi Bhar Matti, Libas, Darbar-e-Dil or Thora sa Aasman one will always find inspirational characters plus heart-trapping story-line which keep you involved in the drama from the start till the end.

The plot of her compilations is very strong and it is because of this very attribute of her writing that makes the dramas more attractive for the people to see. Even those individuals, who have read her novels, desperately wait to see dramas based on her writings. Drama-serials inspired by her novels are mostly aired on Pakistan TV channels like HUM-TV, TV-ONE & INDUS VISION and are appreciated and welcomed warm-heartedly by the lovers of Umera Saheba’s exhilarating writing. These dramas are seen by people of every age-group ranging from students to families and so on so forth. Characters we want and characters we don’t want to see!

0

There are certain characters in dramas which are the most annoying ones. They irritate the viewers till the last episode but the worst part is that we have to see them in each and every drama! Here are some of the examples of such characters:

1. The cunning Bhabi!
This Bhabhi would hate her mother-in-law from the core of her heart for no apparent reason. She would not let her sister-in-law come to visit her house and would keep persuading her husband to buy another house because his ammi has made her life miserable! The only reason this character exists is so mother-in-laws can never trust their daughter-in-laws.

2. The conspiracy specialist Saas and Nand!
These two will always fill their son’s/brother’s ears with hateful speech for the bahoo and he would shout at his wife, hit her and even divorce her for them. Disgusting!

3. The bored and dominating husband!
All he wants for his wife is to bow down to him and stand attentive before him, ready for his every command. She cannot have any interests for herself and even though she works so hard all day, looking after him and his family, he will never cease to complain what a stupid woman she is and how bored he is of her. If she is a working woan, he will definitely not cooperate with her and flirt with other women.

4. The evil sister!
All of her life, this character will never spare her sister of her nasty tactics and will ruin her sister’s wedding, steal her husband, torture her nephews and nieces and then suddenly, she will start to hate the husband she snatched from her sister.

5. The roti dhoti aurat!
This character needs no description. She can be seen in every drama. Let go of her people!

6. The hopeless romantic!
This character can be male or female. The person they love will get married to someone else, and obeying Newton 3rd law of motion that every action has an equal and opposite reaction, they will cut their wrist or hang themselves. Our media should really stop promoting suicide, that too for a girl or boy.

Now that the negative ones have been taken care of, let’s move to the characters we really want to see.

1. A humble and caring Maulvi/ religious scholar:
Aperson who is a Maulvi but not the typical type shown in our dramas but more like Maulvi Subhanllah in Pyaray Afzal.

2. A patriot:
A person who loves his/her country Pakistan from the core of his heart. The story may be set before partition of the subcontinent, before separation of East Pakistan or in present time when Pakistan is facing so many problems. He/she can be an adamant social worker, a police officer and even a housewife who trains her ignorant children and grow love of their country in their heart.

3. A detective or a secret agent:
He/she would fight the crime and corruption in Pakistan. They would fight anyone who threatens their country.

4. A psychopath:
I know we have had enough psychos in Kadurat and Mein deewani but what we want to see is a psychopath who witnessed a horrible incident in his childhood(any incident except the sighting of his evil stepmother please :P) and kills people. The hero would uncover his tracks and hand him over to law enforcement.

5. A director:
A director who has to direct a drama set in a place far away from settlements, in a house(haweli) everyone claims is haunted but he does not stop because he wants the perfect location for his drama. Then all of the members of his crew get stuck in that house and have to fight their way out. The story would be even better if the actual history of that house is shown.

6. The archaeologist:
A person who goes to archaeological sites like pyramids. He encounters a supernatural being over there and then has to struggle ta save himself from it.

7. The bright student:
Yes! I want a drama based on college life but not on the romance in college life! Not at all!
I want this bright student to be shown studying and making projects. His/her daily life should be shown. The plot should be based on friendship.

So how will you like these character? Kindly tell me what you think about these roles and leave me a comment.

Character Uniforms

I live outside of Pakistan and am a fan of Pakistani dramas. It is usually hard for me to watch the dramas when they air weekly, so I usually binge-watch them. Binge-watching results in strange observations. These observations makes otherwise ignorable details pretty obvious, and hard to ignore. Once, you notice a certain pattern, and then you just keep noticing it.

I recently watched Main Bushra and Dooriyan ( after reading Kanwal Murtaza’s review). I noticed a certain pattern in both of them, the main character wore the same style clothes to get into the character. It seems like that typical style of clothing, where the dress is stitched exactly in a certain style is somehow the uniform of the character. Let’s start with Main Bushra,

Here Bushra is listening to her parents fight over the money….

mb

Here Bushra is standing next to her mother after telling off an annoying neighbor.

mb

Bushra got a job interview letter and is smiling.

mb

Bushra at her job interview.

mb

By that time, I was pretty annoyed by the same stitching of all of her dresses. Well, guess what? one of Bushra’s sisters tried to run away but got caught. That sister was taking Bushra’s dress in her bag to the wonderland she was planning to go. Bushra’s father woke up, and stopped the escape. Now since Bushra always wear the same style of clothing, father concluded that it was actually Bushra who was trying to run away. What other evidence would you ever need? Bushra’s life became even more troublesome. It was after marriage that Bushra started wearing dresses of other designs.

In Dooriyan, Faisal Rehman played the character of Daniyal. I liked the play. Although it was a typical story, the direction and acting made the play interesting. In the play, Daniyal was a good man from the middle class and worked really hard to provide for his family. His wife did not value what she had and their marriage had many problems. Now we have to understand that Daniyal was saving money to build a house, that’s why he wore the same jeans for 10 years. He wore it everywhere. Lets check this out.

Here he is wearing jeans at work, and was about to tell his colleague that his wife is expecting their first child.

d

Solving problems of his colleague in the same jeans.

d

Coming home, all mad after talking with his father to sabaq sikhaying his wife, because she has negotiated with his father to do some dishonorable thing (note still in the same jeans).

d

Socializing at the office.

d

This socialization resulted in a fight at home. Now waiting for Wife’s decision to leave, note the first born is now 7 years old. Still wearing the jeans.

d

Now crying over wife’s decision of leaving him in the same jeans, next to a framed picture in the same jeans.

d

Dooriyan was an engaging drama despite being a typical story and having a very distracting pair of jeans. I liked the non-linear story line, but somehow I got carried away with Faisal Rehman’s jeans. This one-pant wonder tried very hard to save his home but things did not work out. The directions were great and the young man playing Faisal Rehman’s son did a great job. Give it a try.

Did you guys ever notice some thing like a typical stitching or dress pattern for any character in a drama? Please share your thoughts. I just thought that was funny.

Sincerely

F. Kazmi

Changing Television – Remembering Shehnaz Sheikh

Changing Television - Remembering Shehnaz Sheikh

The entertainment service of Pakistan has exponentially grown to become the bigger slice of the pie that illustrates the media industry. Our dramas have come a long way since the golden era of PTV in the late 1960s to the 1980s, the career graph of each and every actor varying its way across the axis and taking peaks or plummeting down; yet there are certain things that haven’t changed at all, and probably won’t even in the future either.

The video that has recently resurfaced and posted below features Shehnaz Sheikh’s appearance in the talk show ‘Yes Sir No Sir’  hosted by the late Moin Akhtar. This was one of her few last appearances on television before leaving the industry for good, along with moving to Lahore when she did.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jNpCdVBIyw&list=LLM0nG1wb9vwW_3SA715zBBQ&index=6

Shehnaz Sheikh was a brilliant actress of her time and was widely acclaimed for her two most popular dramas Tanhaiyan (1985) and Ankahi (1982); both successful shows and loved till date. And although the setting was based on the times of the 80s, the actress flaunted the idea of a compassionate, independent woman who wished to support her family by working in an era when the practice was considered estranged. She was widely praised by critics and caught the eye of Raj Kapoor who offered her the role of heroin in the Indian movie Henna (1991), but which, to the general surprise of audiences and professionals, she blatantly refused.

Changing Television - Remembering Shehnaz Sheikh

The reason behind her turning down the role, as stated in the video, was the fact that the actress simply disliked and was exceedingly tired of the slander and character defamation that came with the profession of acting. Shehnaz believed that a film actress would be even more as a subject of interest when it comes to besmirching. Even as she ended her note of presence on the show, she made a statement towards PTV regarding this:

“I think that PTV should offer protection for its employees, especially women performers, against anything that has been said or written regarding them, which is scandalous and might affect their personal life or tarnish their reputation…..there are many girls who are willing and wish to work in the entertainment industry, but are held back by their parents permission due to these circumstances….if this is not done, then sooner or later, no girl belonging to any respectable family would be seen working on-screen.”

Changing Television - Remembering Shehnaz Sheikh

It is true, that working in the media, and especially being a famous celebrity amongst the viewers, comes with its disadvantages. The platform of being a celebrated actress is not an easy one to take and has never been. Especially now, that with the progress in technology and expansion of social accounts on applications such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, etc., privacy is all but dead and ‘fake news’ is probably more believed as real than the truthful facts.

Shehnaz always claimed that the absence of new challenges that came with performing and lack of diverse characters being portrayed in serials made up the huge chunk of her influential decision to leave acting. And this is true. In the video, Shehnaz claimed that:

“….in our industry, unless someone plays the role of depressed and wallowing being, who cries repeatedly, she will never be considered a good actress..comedians are considered as something of a court jester..”

This is pretty much more or less similar to another quote of an outstanding artist of our time:

“..just like the rest of the world, we are a formula- driven industry…you know, Humsafar changed everything; people in masses, from all classes were watching television like never before. Now at this time, I feel, that the TV industry, should have said, okay. We’ve got the eyeballs. Let’s change things. And you know what we did? Unfortunately, we replicated the formula.” – Mahira Khan, Faiz International Festival 2016.

Changing Television - Remembering Shehnaz Sheikh

Familiarity. Repetition.  It’s what highly saturates pretty much every plot line of the dramas televised on our screens and what more or less sums up the aforementioned quote. The dominating husband lashing out every bit of anger and absurd act of abuse onto his poor pitiful wife (who has to pull off the pretty face especially while weeping) until she finally decides to leave him; only to marry another man who is, fortunately, much more handsome, rich and successful, as well as willing to accept the child that’s not even his own. Let’s stretch this out into words and tears and screams onto a canvass of scripts for 24 episodes and the ratings are in the bag.

This is exactly what Shehnaz Sheikh was pointing the finger at. Doing the same roles over and over again tends to make it tiresome for actors and audiences alike. Previously dramas included a number of characters, each of whom played an important role and were indispensable and unforgettable in their own ways. Whether it was the solemn hero, or the stubborn heroine, the comedic sidekick or the aggravated old aaya; in spite of having one significant attribute were able to pull off every emotion most convincingly and magnificently. Most dramas today only tend to cast people who might be conceived as being good looking but fail to act and live up to the expectations of the viewers.

Even after 30 years of Tanhaiyan, television now tries to discredit working women as being less honorable and seems to conceptualize the idea of them working outside their homes as alienation. The use of inappropriate jokes and phrases has become a common norm within comedy plays, which makes them an explicit watch for children. Earlier on, shows like Ainak Wala Jin and Alif Laila were adored by kids who not only differentiated between the good and bad morals of life but were affiliated with their own national language and culture.

Changing Television - Remembering Shehnaz Sheikh

The potential within our country is exuberant and abundance in nature. The only thing required is to make use of it and rather than following the safe path of making predictable shows, it’s time we deviate from the commonality so as to take risks. There have been certain reformations where now dramas are being made to tackle societal issues such as the rights of transgenders or honor killings or rape. Some plays have casted women as being strong-willed and ambitious in their career. Let’s try to encourage them. The odds are in our favor, for our industry is nearly at its peak and has a brilliant crowd of performers that are internationally acknowledged for their work. If we play our cards right, then consequentially, we will be able to reap benefits that are both economically and socially desirable, or lose another gem of the industry as we did some 37 years ago.

Change in timings of dramas on Saturday evening at ARY Digital

8:00 PM is considered a premier slot for entertainment channels since old days of PTV when drama considered as prime television entertainment is aired. Following the tradition of PTV, current generation of private satellite channels schedule their best dramas for 8 PM time slot. Normally if a drama gets low TRP, it is shifted to 9:00 PM time slot.

Some two and a half months ago ARY Digital started two new dramas for Saturday evening named Goyaa and Dil Nahin Maantaa for 8 PM and 9 PM time slots respectively. Goyaa is relatively different from a routine formula drama, while Dil Nahin Maanta is the same evergreen successful formula story of one husband sandwiched in two wives.

Surprisingly from upcoming Saturday, ARY Digital has swapped the time slot of both dramas; i.e. now Goyaa at 9 PM and Dil Nahin Maantaa at 8 PM.

The drama is airing daily on Hum TV. Well, fans of Ayeza Khan and Danish Taimoor are loving the drama, however, a large number of audiences is saying that this drama is just another Ramadan drama. They are missing and recalling Suno Chanda and Chupke Chupke. One social media user wrote, “People who already watched Suno Chanda and Chupke Chupke won’t like these new shows that much. Those dramas were greatest comedy dramas. No ramzan drama can match their level”. Another social media user stated, “All though I haven’t watched the whole episode but I have watched a few clips on Instagram and Ayeza Khan as a doctor is giving me very funny vibes, she could not showcase the character, doctors are never like this, at least, she needs to learn how to act like a doctor, it has forced comedy and regular dialogues. I think Sehar Khan’s acting is much better than her in Fairy Tale. New faces have a lot of potential but they are given so much less projects like over hyped super stars”. Well another social media user said, “In the series all characters were trying hard to make people laugh, sadly, they are unsuccessful. It was very dissappointing. Best was Suno Chanda”. A social media user said, ‘we are not being able to connect with these new characters or maybe we have grown older now”, the social media user was missing Chupke Chupke and Hum Tum. While replying to a criticism comment, Saima Akram Chaudhry announced that it is her last Ramadan play:

Chand Tara Cast Criticized For Doing Iftar in Indian Style Thali

0

Ramadan festivities are at full swing in Pakistan and other Muslim countries. Well, Muslim across the world are arranging amazing Iftar and Suhoor parties and dinners. Pakistani actors also love to arrange the Iftar parties on the sets of their dramas. Recently a lavish Iftari was served on the set of Ramadan drama Chand Tara. Well, the Iftar was served in Indian style. South Indian food was served in Indian style Thalis. Have a look at the video which was shared by Hum TV’S Instagram page:

Well, the flexing and promotion of Indian cuisine wasn’t appreciated by the fans. Fans were of the view that they could have served Pakistani dishes instead of this authentic South Indian food. One social media user wrote, “What are they showing??? Is it our culture?, Also women are sitting uncovered, eating in the Indian style Thalis”. Almost everyone was angry after seeing the South Indian cuisine served in a pure Indian style. One Instagram user wrote, “Why they are having iftar party in hindu style? Totally two opposite things and please don’t make it as a cultural thing, it is purely a religious thing and it cannot be the same like others. Stop showing these nonsense on tv. What you guys are trying to do. Leaving our culture language dressing and now this. Shame on you guys. Why can’t we promote our own beautiful culture so it stays with our new generation also. So sad. May Allah be with us and keep us on the straight path. Ameen”. Almost everyone called the team out for obeying Indian cultural norms happily. Have a look at the comments:

A part from that, many social media users said that the cuisine is Indian but the way they are celebrating Iftari is totally wrong because it’s the time of dua as Allah accepts dua at this time and women should cover head and men and women should pray.

Chambaili- A reflection of Pakistani Politics!

0

It is human nature that he gets attracted towards the things that he can symbolize with and when it comes to movies, the nearer they are to reality, the better the business they expect. It was only few days’ back that I watched the Pakistani Movie Chambaili in cinema and really, it was an immense pleasure to find out that the country’s film industry has finally entered into a new era of success.

Been directed by Ismail Jilani and produced by Abdullah Kadwani & Shahzad Nawaz, the movie is based on the dirty politics of the country, though, no real characters are personified in the film.  It was amazing to see that the story seemed a real life experience of every Pakistani and the incidents that have been shown in the movie are what people like you and me go through daily. If you are planning to get a hold of some decent movies to enjoy with your friends this summer, Chambaili is surely the one you need to think of.

The Plot

The story revolves around a family which lives in an area where the majority of the houses are been bought by a political party. Ali Tahir(Saif), one of the members of the family is back to Pakistan from abroad to attend the engagement of his cousin. The family keeps getting threads from the political party to sell their only house left in the area so that the area officially gets into their influence but they refuse to do so.

images (2)

On the other hand, the party ruling the country by forming the government becomes a victim of internal conflicts between the members, where one of the MNAs’ Ghulam Mohiuddin raises his voice against the party ruling them over decades but gets assassinated by his own people. The leaders of every party are seen smoking and drinking casually, which again reflects the realism of our society.

The movie takes a turn when Ali Tahir’s friend, ‘Musa’ decides to stand up to guard their rights and their country and starts a hunger strike. Initially, they get no support from people and media, their determination and the speech been delivered by the leader brings followers, in general the youth. However, Musa gets killed by the open fires of Police on the orders of political party in lead.

images (3)

It is then that a simple man evolves as a leader of ordinary people and becomes a threat to all the political figures of the nation. The general elections are then shown, and it is easy to identify with promotional activities been shown in the movie.Fortunate enough, the movie was a virtual abstraction of the real story of the country and the votes been casted by the people made the real man win without the rigging in elections.

All in all, it is a good effort and for a minute you can feel a patriot within you. The words, the dialogues and the miseries been showed on screen goes well with the current situation of this country.

Share your views about Chambaili if you have watched it, and if not, then it is highly recommended to take two hours from your life to enjoy watching a movie based on your own sufferings!

Wishes,

Nida Zaidi

Challenging Stereotypes

0

Playwrights in Pakistan generally follow some preconceived notions and ideologies. They are chained in certain ideologies and whoever tries to break through those ideologies face lots of criticism. Pakistani media has gained independence in the last decade which has given liberties to the writers as well. Prior to that writers weren’t allowed to write openly, to choose certain taboo topics or challenge the stereotypes or ideologies clearly defined by the society and culture. But now the question arises is that since the writers have also gained certain liberties are they using their pen aptly to challenge those notions and stereotypes.

aisha-khan-in-zip-bus-chup-raho-drama-1But there is and should be a distinction between taboo topics and vulgarity. It is totally upon the writers how they broach the subject; their ability makes all the difference. Sadly our writers fail to see this and produce dramas like “Zip”, “Qudosi Sahab ki Bewah” and “Mohabbat Jaye Bhar Mein”. There are some writers who occasionally try to question the stereotypes but discussing them will require a separate article; one of the examples of such characters is Kiran (Kankar) and though some people appreciated her character but mostly it was subjected to criticism.

Despite all the liberties writers are still stuck with old topics and stereotypes. The female characters are either essentially negative or positive; writers rarely present forth balanced characters that can be good with some bad characteristics or vice versa e.g. an extremely evil saas and extremely masoom n mazloom bahu (e.g. Ek Tamana Lahasil si, kabi kabi). Dramas now lack originality, if a drama becomes popular all dramatists start following the story and theme blindly, hence end result is dishonesty; not only with their profession but with the viewers as well. For instance the sister rivalries, prejudiced maulvis (I have hardly seen a balanced maulvi character, they are always prejudiced, lacking in actual knowledge, unfit fathers and husbands) etc. have become the rage in the last few years. Honestly this should end now; the viewers are more than fed up of all these repetitive themes which offer nothing new.

Some writers have produced very unique and unforgettable characters. Faiza Iftikhar is among such writers who have given us dramas like Roag, Bilquees Kaur and Aunn Zara. On one hand she has portrayed gravely serious topics and characters and on the other is a lighthearted, perhaps the most entertaining drama of the season. But her lighthearted dramas like Aunn Zara and Akbari Asghari also had underlying meaning highlighting bitter realities of our society. Again it depends on the way a writer approaches the issue. She might not have challenged the stereotypes with her characters but she certainly have with her style.

Challenges Faced By Pakistani Actors Nowadays

0

The Pakistani entertainment industry has grown incredibly over the years. With the advent of private television channels, the revival of the film industry, and the advancement of technology this industry underwent a change that has its pros and cons. There are more opportunities now for the actors but there are also certain challenges which make their job more difficult than ever. We have seen many success stories from the industry in the past decade or so with actors going from playing supporting roles to becoming the top most leading actors in the country. We have also seen actors going into production and even direction. The room for growth in the industry is infinite but so are the frustrations and the challenges.

Nowadays, actors are more vocal than ever about the challenges they face unlike before when they did not speak about such things. These actors obviously are those who have attained a certain position in the industry and therefore they can speak their mind. Even now, these actors have to compromise constantly even though they have been associated with the industry for decades now. With the changing times, some senior actors had to face situations that they had never encountered before.

After watching so many different interviews of Pakistani celebrities, we have short-listed a list of challenges which the actors face yet they continue to entertain the viewers and do not let these hardships stand in their way.

[lwptoc]

The Race for Ratings

With the increase in the number of television channels, the competition is fiercer than ever. The viewers have so many different options to choose from and the sponsors also want to pick the dramas with the most viewership for sponsoring. As a result of this, there is pressure on the actors to be a part of such dramas that will appeal to the audience. Many of the viewers pick and choose a drama based on the actors who are in the cast. Therefore, an actor whose drama gets the ratings gets the most offers as well. There is constant pressure on the actors to choose projects which will guarantee viewership. Gone are the days when content was the king, nowadays ratings are the determining factor and it is obviously challenging for an actor to determine beforehand which drama will get the ratings that the producer and the channel desire. If an actor is consistently part of dramas that do not get the desired ratings, no matter how well they perform, their ‘demand’ in the industry is automatically, unfortunately, affected by it.

The Dearth of Quality Scripts

Due to the rating system and in an attempt to grasp the attention of the viewers, the quality of scripts has gone down. There are more dramas being made today than ever therefore there is a lot of repetition as well. If a drama with a certain storyline gets popular then most of the production houses want the writers to pen down scripts on the dame lines. Most producers and channels want to play it safe because at the end of the day they are in the business for the money.

Many of the veteran and even the younger actors have often shared how frustrated they feel working on television since there is a dearth of quality scripts. They all agree that most stories revolve around more or less the same angles. Some of them have to choose scripts they are not satisfied with because they need to continue working. Others have distanced themselves from the television industry because the scripts do not appeal to them.

Even those actors who are really passionate and find it difficult to take a break are forced to do so because there aren’t enough quality scripts to choose from. Some of these actors have been part of the drama industry since the PTV days and they often share how different things are now and how the quality is going downhill with every passing year.

Pressure from Production Houses & Public

Most of the actors do not talk about the pressure from the production houses directly but it is quite evident that many of them have ended up choosing certain projects because they did not want to displease a certain producer. Since the relationship between the actors and the producers is more like that of a boss and an employee nowadays instead of team members, the actors do not get the creative space they need and most often end up taking instructions from the producers.

Apart from this, there is also constant pressure on the actors from the public since a majority of their fans and followers want to see them a certain way and do not accept their individuality in a way that they get the kind of freedom they need in order to grow and work in a relaxed way.

Delay in Payments

It is truly sad that nowadays more than ever even the top actors of the industry do not get their pays on time. Many actors have often talked about this issue, some of them get paid after years of doing their projects and others don’t get paid at all. In a recent interview, Nauman Ijaz openly talked about the delay in payments which definitely makes the job of an actor even more difficult. Even though acting demands a lot of time and a great deal of effort, the actors who have to run their houses obviously have to venture into other fields as well because they need to keep earning. Some of them have turned into writers solely because they were running out of money even though they were continuously working. While the producers keep on investing in new projects, they do not pay those who have already worked for them and Noman Ijaz blames the broadcaster more than the producer for it.

This is a big challenge for creative individuals since they have to continue working with people who already owe them salaries. The fact that more actors are coming out and openly talking about this issue goes to show that this is, unfortunately, a common phenomenon in the industry.

Instant & Insensitive Feedback

Things have changed vastly due to social media. Every person watching television nowadays has easy access to social media and most often people are quick to share their opinions about everything from the episode which just aired to the statements given by the celebrities. Apart from this, whenever an episode of a drama is uploaded on YouTube, people give their feedback. This instant feedback can at times be the biggest challenge for an actor since even the smallest of mistakes are picked up by the audience and people most often are not very kind while sharing their opinions. There are also so many people who can be harsh and insensitive while sharing these opinions, this is perhaps the most difficult challenge for an actor.

Maintaining Public Image

The viewers consider actors their ‘property’ and therefore they have certain expectations from them. Even though they follow these celebrities and call themselves their die-hard fans, there is little room for these celebrities to cross those boundaries which the viewers have set for them. The females in particular have to try really hard to protect their public image. Wearing a revealing dress or giving a statement that might hurt people’s sentiments can result in ruining their public image. Even the male actors have to constantly make sure that they do not do anything which hurts the sensitivities of the public. There was a time when actors were more focused on their work and they did not have to put in so much effort to maintain this image since the interaction with the public was not as much as it is today due to technological advancement.

Disrespect from Producers & Channels

Even the most veteran actors have shared how they have been mistreated on the sets by those who run the show and even the co-actors. Everyone knows about the Badar Khalil controversy and how Sultana Siddiqui gave Fawad Khan preference over her. She openly talked about how senior actors are made to sit for hours while the new actors come late on the set and get their scenes recorded first. The channels and the producers have lost respect for the senior actors and in order to be heard, they need to put their foot down.

Imran Ashraf shared how for the longest time he was the one serving tea to everyone because he was just another supporting actor on the set. He also shared in one of his interviews how he was mistreated by his co-actors. Someone as well-known as Muhammad Ahmed faced the same difficulties because he was too polite. Therefore even if an actor is giving his best, he still has to face these situations which are not in his control at all.

The Social Media Angle

Social media has given actors an edge as well but if you look at the bigger picture most actors are not happy with the way social media has impacted their work. Sonya Hussyn and many others have openly shared how important following on social media has become now. The popular actors do not just get acting projects but they get the sponsorships and advertisements as well. Apart from working hard in the field, the actors therefore have to dedicate their energies and resources towards having a definite presence on social media as well because it affects the kind of work they get. This is a real challenge for all those actors who want their work to define them and not the number of followers they have on social media.

Typecasting & Biased

If an actor does well in a certain role, the producers play it safe by casting him in similar roles repeatedly. This definitely affects the diversity which an actor would like to show on the screen. Since nowadays the focus is primarily on ratings and playing it safe, this is happening more than ever. Not only this, more than the performance itself, the looks of an actor also contribute to what kind of a role he will be offered. There are actors such as Imran Ashraf and Gohar Rasheed who are trying hard to swim against the tide. The fact however remains that in the industry especially nowadays the outward appearance of an actor plays a major role in getting him certain kinds of projects.

Even the actresses are chosen based on their skin color which is extremely sad. Therefore, apart from polishing their craft, the actors have to often resort to cosmetic procedures in order to bag quality projects and get noticed by the producers.

Staying Relevant

Another big challenge for those actors who have crossed a certain age is staying relevant. Most of them feel frustrated that Pakistani dramas revolve around the younger lot and therefore they continue to play supporting roles although there are so many stories related to their age group that needs to be told.

Because of this issue, there are so many talented actors who are simply relegated to the background because of their age. The talent, therefore, takes a backseat and age comes first. This makes it difficult for the older actors to stay relevant since there aren’t a lot of roles that are meaty enough to get them the kind of attention they deserve. Although actors do not have a shelf life, in such a scenario their shelf life is highly dependent on the production houses and even the best of actors have to try really hard to stay in the picture and get noticed.

Kudos to all those actors who give commendable performances and continue to impress us despite all these challenges. It is also good to see them talking about the issues they face with so much confidence. There is definitely a need for unions and proper laws that would safeguard the interests of these actors. Also, there is a dire need for diversity in the industry so that everyone who is talented would get to contribute to it in a way that satisfies their creative side as well.

Do share your thoughts about the challenges faced by the actors and what do you think should be done about it?

After the first song Pariyan, Chalay Thay Saath’s complete soundtrack is released on Patari and we must say, we’re impressed. And yes, the music of the film is just as interesting as the trailer. The score of the film has been done by producer Abbas Ali Khan, and a few artists such as Mooroo and Sikandar Ka Mandar have also lent their music for the film.

After listening to the music, one can surely say that we finally have some good, authentic and original Pakistani music which is not inspired by Bollywood.

Not to brag, but we think they're really cute together! Saira Shahroz and Kent S. The original soundtrack of Chalay Thay Saath consists of six songs.

1) The song Pariyaan by Bell is refreshing and gives a peaceful feeling, it’s written in depth and offers a music that touches the core.
2) Mariam by Moro is more like a full of life song with some cool tone.
3) Jeep Racey by East Side Story is a fun song with a touch of desi music and lyrics. It’s enjoyable and truly Pakistani.
4) Khalis Makhan by Bakshi brothers & Natasha Noorani is a soft song. It gives the feeling of serenity with soulful music which is extremely pleasing and a soothing to the ears.
5) The Jinn by Behroze Sabzwari is an ordinary song and doesn’t have much to offer.
6) The last but not the least, Bolo by Sikandar ka Mandar & Natasha Noorani gives a good feeling with some exceptional voices.
