Shooting wraps up for Ainy Jaffri’s next!

Ainy Jaffri who was last seen in Balu Mahi is shooting in London for her next film Haraam. Ainy posted this on instagram after the shoot wrapped up:

Shooting wraps up for Ainy Jaffri’s next!

Ainy termed the movie as a story of unrequited love. While talking to images she said:

“Haraam is a story of love, the unrequited kind.” She further added:

“What happens when you fall in love with a friend who can never see you as more even if they tried? As unique and painful as it may feel, it’s actually a common human experience and [also] a direct experience of the writer (who is also the director). Haraam explores themes of love, cultural diversity and religion.”

The movie is directed by Serge Rashidi Zakuani who has made two independent films under his production company Stepping Stonez before this; Haraam being his third. Ainy added:

“They are currently in post production and Haraam will be his third film. SRZ (as he’s known as) tells independent stories that give a true reflection of London and its diverse ethnic make up.”

She also gave some insight into her character:

“My character’s name is Layla. The film follows the adventures of this group of young ethnically diverse adults who work in a picture framing store. It’s Layla’s last day, her best friend Geo is in love with her but due to cultural and religious differences he is scared to open up to her about his feelings.”

Shooting wraps up for Ainy Jaffri’s next!

Serge Rashidi Zakuani also talked to images about his film. He said:  “I wanted to showcase my admiration of and for the Muslim community, especially in this day and age where the focus is centered around elements that divide us rather than unite us.”

Shooting wraps up for Ainy Jaffri’s next!

SRZ had some really good things to say about his experience on working with Ainy. He said: “Working with Ainy has been nothing short of amazing. From the first script read-through until her very last scene, Ainy has been incredibly focused, gracious and humble considering her growing success.” He further added: “I feel fortunate we managed to get her attached to the project and I’m super excited for audiences to watch the depth, vulnerability and honesty she brings to the role of Layla. With a beauty that transcends physical appearance, Ainy is a global rising star and I couldn’t be prouder to list her as a cast member of our film.”

Ainy shared similar thoughts on working with him: “I’ve had a great time working with the team and really looking forward to seeing the final film.”

The release date of the movie is not announced yet!

Ramzan Apka Hua!

We are once again blessed with the Holy month of Ramadan. It is the month of blessings and redemption. We’ve all been taught to try to do good as much as possible during the span of these blessed days, as each virtuous act is rewarded 7 times more during this lunar month. All of your Islamiat teachers probably told you that this is the month you get to harvest for your afterlife. However, it is pretty hard to work for the afterlife when you hear of all the rewards that are being rewarded to people in this life on your TV screens, right?

As I am sitting in my room, writing this article, I can hear Shahid Afridi (retired cricketer), the new host of ARY’s Ramadan transmission after the sad demise of Junaid Jamshaid, awarding bikes to some “lucky winners”. Till a few years back, this was the time I would hear Tilawat of Quran in my ears, but now, it’s “Firdos ki lawn apki hui” and “Dubai ka ticket apka hua”.

The Ramadan TV shows that entailed various learned religious scholars illuminating different aspects of Islam to the audience while answering different queries regarding religion are long gone, replaced with shows in which we find the audience begging the host for “gifts”. Can one even call these gifts? From personal experience, I’ve never received a gift after being ridiculed or insulted and these shows do just that.

The hosts of these shows do a great job at disrespecting and degrading their audience. They have been doing so since quite some time now. Is this the reason the audience seems to have become immune to all the insult they go through in order to attain a “gift”? The “motay motay uncle and auntiyan” that Fahad Mustafa calls on his stage for dancing can’t seem to shake the grins off of their faces when the entire crowd (and the rest of Pakistan) laughs at them for their obesity. These shows impart a very negative view of our nation and country. In pursuit of these gifts, people are willing to go to any length , and in doing so, exhibit to the world just how greedy and immature we can be.

Islam teaches unity and brotherhood; these shows encourage their audience to step over one another, make fun of each other- just to ‘earn’ a pair of service’ shoes! The chaos that take place to attain that the pair of shoes leaves one wondering whether the feet that are supposed to wear them are left in such a state to be able to do so.

Religion is used as a marketing tool in these transmissions as the actors and singers that we see singing and dancing all year, promoting the most vulgar fashions, completely change their persona during this month. Not only does their wardrobe take a 180-degree U-turn- the ripped jeans and short T-shirts being replaced by shalwar kameez- but they even begin preaching Islam! The level of hypocrisy one witnesses from their side is on another level. Every year these actors use these fake, pious personas to cash in on Ramadan.

It’s hard to pin-point when exactly it all went wrong. When did the Islamic quiz shoes get replaced by shows that offered a chance to win bikes, cars and now even airplanes? When did the TV transmissions that included informative discussion about Islam get replaced by transmissions that have people being forced to eat ‘aam’ for a bike?

One can argue that quizzes do take place during these transmissions. I am sorry to inform, but insane questions like “which coloured shirt was I wearing in my last show” don’t count as an informative question of a quiz show!

Have we lost the spirit of Ramadan to the race of ratings?

Our TV industry has clearly lost all sense of responsibility that it ever had towards the Pakistani nation in the blindfold of ratings that covers their eyes. However, this does not mean that we should negate our responsibility as individuals too. We should hold our morals, dignity, and integrity high and not give into the vile of shows that offer Mercedes Benz, and other materialistic things that force people to forget the true essence of Ramadan.

During the month of Ramadan, one should try to make effort to get closer to Allah rather than get tempted to win an airplane, and in the process, wasting the entire day to get in the hall where the show takes place. This month offers us ample amount of time for prayers and charity. It is high time for us, as a nation, to improve our state. We need to work for our own betterment and start rejecting these Ramadan transmissions that are nothing but a means to ridicule not only us but our beloved country Pakistan.

Today is 28th of May, the day Pakistan performed its first nuclear test. Let ‘youm-e-Takbir’ remind us what self-integrity and dignity is!

A very Ramadan Mubarak to all of you.

Sammi Episode 18 Review – Going Strong

When this serial started most of us were under the impression that this drama is going to be about the custom of vanni alone and it will explore this practice by showing the leading character live her life as a vanni. I am glad that Sammi is about much more than that. Every episode has something new to offer and the character development in the drama has been great throughout.

I love the way the writer highlighted Waqas’ frame of mind in this episode, he was a loving brother who turned into a monster who was out to prove that he was gherat mand mainly due to the pressure of his father and peers. When Chaudhry Rab Nawaz asked him to kill someone for him Waqas said that he did not want to be a murderer. Later on when his father asked him to do what Chaudhry wanted him to do and kill Sammi as well, he once again reflect upon the way his life once ways and the turn his life took after the incident on Sammi’s wedding. Although, Pervaiz’s death was an accident but Waqas got scared and he was willing to do anything it took to stay out of jail so that he could save his own life. Waqas has been shown as someone who is easily influenced but now for a change he is questioning everything he did and no longer wants to be a part of all this. Haris Waheed and Irfan Khoosat were phenomenal in tonight’s episode. Haris Waheed’s outlook and performance both are beyond brilliant. Irfan Khoosat’s portrayal of a father who is the perfect example of an ignorant man was brilliant. The conversation between Waqas and his father was actually extremely disturbing. Watching a father pressurizing his son to kill his only daughter was very upsetting and my heart went out to all such women who have to live under such circumstances.

My second favorite conversation/scene of tonight’s episode was the one which covered Naheed’s state of mind and the way her sister in law tried to make her feel guilty for doing something which was completely legal. I absolutely love Naheed’s confidence, although she does not have a lot of resources but she is a strong woman who makes the most of her circumstances. Hearing Naheed admit that she married Ghulam Rasool so that she could have a child was shocking but it once again showed how different this woman was from all the other women around her. The dialogues about haram and halal were right on point! I am waiting for the time when Ghulam Rasool will finally be back because I have a feeling that Naheed will get her happy ending at some point. Once again Nadia Afghan translated her character faultlessly on screen.

Chaudhry Nawaz wants both Waqas and Rashid out of his way so that he can marry Sammi. If Waqas kills Rashid, he would want Chaudhry Nawaz to fulfill his end of the bargain, Chaudhry does not want to do that which is why he wants Waqas dead too. Chaudhrani’s role in the entire scenario is also very interesting. Madiha Rizvi and Rehan Sheikh both own their roles completely. I did not really like the way Aalyan looked at Sammi today and once again Mawra Hocane was a complete disappointment. She did not do justice to those beautiful and touching dialogues and made it very difficult for me to connect to her character. However, I cannot appreciate the writer enough for asserting the fact that the consent of a woman at the time of nikkah is more important than anything else once again in this episode.

Chandni made her way into the haveli by the end of the episode and I can’t wait to find out what her plan is. Like every other episode of Sammi, this one too had some strong messages and the story moved forward considerably. This time around I really missed Shahzaib and even Rashid’s mother. All the characters add something special to the story and have a presence of their own therefore even if one of them is missing, they are truly missed!! The director and the writer deserve tons of credit for paying attention to minute details and for giving all the tracks adequate screen time in every episode. It isn’t easy handling a story with so many different tracks and it is even more difficult to make every track in the story count!

The preview of the next episode suggested that Salima is going to have another girl and Rashid and Chandni will finally be face to face! Looking forward to how the story unfolds from here on.

Ushna Shah spoke the ultimate truth regarding Ramadan hypocrisy!

Love her or hate her but you cannot ignore her. We are speaking about none other than Alif Allah aur Insan star Ushna Shah. Ushna spoke her heart out about the Ramadan hypocrisy and this is what she had to say:

“I’ll jump on the ‘Ramzan Mubarak’ status bandwagon and leave my two cents here:
(Note: this does not apply to everyone, but it applies to a LOT of people we all know).

If you’re a di*k before Ramadan and if you’re a di*k after Ramadan, please don’t send me those ‘Ramzan Mubarak’ graphics captioned with speeches about how auspicious the month is and how holy you feel and how you seek forgiveness from Allah and send me the holiest of greetings.
You’re going back to being a di*k after eid and you know it!
It’s the same people every year.
The same directors who have hit on me and not given me work because some other actress gave in. The same people who have spread disgusting lies about me or exaggerated truths to blacken my name. The same jealous people who have gone out of their way to wish ill for me. The same people I have seen hurt myself and/or others for personal gains or even for no reason at all. The same people that will be bystanders as our minorities are tormented on a daily basis. The same people that could give zero effs about the plight of the voiceless in this country; be it the poor, be it animals, be it minorities, be it anyone.

You’d be surprised at how many people do this, and they do this every year! Every. Year
For some, this is a holy month of prayer, discipline and ablution. *For others, it’s the month of selling Islam and being a shameless hypocrite.* And ladies (you know who you are) You can wear your white veils, put on the most angelic makeup with the lightest glowing highlighter, pronounce your Arabic vowels from deep within your esophagus, pretend to be descended straight from above (especially some of my favourite television personalities), but your souls will remain rotten and ugly as long as your behaviour is the same for every other month. You’ll go back to lying, spreading malicious gossip, being cruel, selling yourselves to get ahead, screwing people over etc etc..

I’m not very religious, that is obvious, but I will take being a bystander and being deemed whatever the hell they deem me, over exploiting our religion any day! I have zero respect for the veil dawning Virgin Marys who make millions off Ramzam transmission by preaching the word of God on Iftar shows and become tutti fruitties a month later.

Many people will pretend to be someone they are not for a mere 30 days to cash in on this holy month, I may not keep all my fasts or say all my prayers, but I sure as hell won’t disrespect Islam and the millions of people fasting and truly abiding by the faith by pretending to do so just to gain the respect and the money I do not deserve.

Ramzan Mubarak :-)
Note: before you criticize, read this post carefully and try to understand that I am not targeting people who truly believe in the spirit of Islam, I’m targeting the hypocrites fake it every year for either pseudo respect or money.”

Short summary of the post: Sirf Ramadan main khud ko badal ke ye saabit na karein ke jaise aap ko baandh diya gaya hai! LOL!

Ushna’s post was applauded by many and people are saying she just spoke the ultimate truth about Ramadan hypocrisy. What do you say?

Mohabbat Tumse Nafrat Hai Episode 8 Review – Snoozefest

It was awfully difficult sitting through tonight’s episode which once again was one-dimensional because the focus of the story yet again was entirely on who should get married to whom! So far the story lacks depth and the characters have nothing grand to offer, in fact this drama has plenty of annoying characters. This episode did not have a single impactful or even entertaining scene to its credit. Watching these characters which are so plain, talking about love and commitment like they are experts in the field definitely makes it even more difficult to connect to their characters. Maheen has not yet given an answer to Gulrez’s proposal yet Ami Begum thinks it is a good time to force Waqar into getting married to someone he clearly does not want to get married to. I definitely expected better from Ami Begum’s character. What she did today was just plain shocking and not in line with her character at all. She has been shown as a really cool nani/dadi who has given Maheen plenty of time to think about Gulrez’s proposal but wants Waqar to marry Jia because he is friends with her. She is also very sure that Waqar is in love with Jia!! This had to be the most forced development in tonight’s episode.

The conversations in Gulrez’s house are even more monotonous and repetitive than the ones in Maheen’s house. Gulrez’s state of mind, his sister’s fears and his brother in law’s role in the entire scenario has been shown clearly in the past few episodes, now this track needs to move forward. No one in Maheen’s house except for her sister has talked about the proposal again. It is strange that Ami Begum is pursuing Waqar’s relationship with Jia more passionately than Gulrez’s proposal for Maheen. Everyone invested more time in talking about why Waqar left the match than discussing what to say to Gulrez’s sister or how to make Maheen come up with a decision. I hate to see talented actors like Saman Ansari and Malik Raza being wasted playing these useless characters which are like props more than anything else.

Mohabbat Tumse Nafrat Hai Episode 8 Review - Snoozefest

The lyrics of the OST of Mohabbat Tumse Nafrat Hai are far more deep and meaningful than this drama as a whole. I hate to say this but this episode reminded me of Mann Mayal, the only difference is that back then I had more patience and stamina!! This episode proved that Mohabbat Tumse Nafrat Hai is not likely to take off because it does not have enough substance. I definitely expected better from a writer like Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar and right now I am very tempted to tune into Zakham because even though it is simple but it is much more entertaining than this play! It is impossible to connect to any of the characters, Jia and Ami begum are turning out to be two very unreasonable people! I was shocked when Jia sent Ami begum her father’s phone number since she hates him so much. This episode once again had some of the most dull conversations and the characters are losing their charm with every passing episode. Everything about this drama is too staged, from the scenarios to the way they have been enacted on screen. All those annoying commercials promoting shows which are going to be part of Geo’s Ramazan transmission made the whole experience of watching this drama live on television even more torturous! I am beyond disappointed with Mohabbat Tumse Nafrat Hai and have no reason to look forward to the next episode!

Social Media: A Disaster OR Bliss?

0

With the outburst of social media usage in the recent times; one is always bombarded with viral videos, pictures and incidents from all across the world. Apart from providing easy connectivity to users it is a platform for promotions and business too. Many people today in the entertainment industry have been social media sensations prior to their breakthroughs. Yes; social media provided us an opportunity to see some immensely talented people but it has also been source of some dreadful disasters. Let us take a look at some people who have now become household names:

OSMAN KHALID BUTT:

The talented Osman Khalid is the jack of all trades. Talk about doing a task and he can do it. He is a good actor, a nice dancer which he just proved in Balu Mahi and a talented writer as he has written screenplays for movies Siyaah and Janaan. He recently wrote the script for Lux Style Awards 2017. But before all this he was known for his hilarious videos on YouTube; who can forget the hilarious parody of Humsafar that MUMMY AAP KYA KEH RAHI HAIN! He is also the co-founder, creative lead and poetry editor at Desi Writers Lounge, an online, 24/7, 365 days a year writers’ workshop and community that aims to showcase new voices in South Asian writing through their biannual publication, ‘Papercuts’. He is indeed a very talented addition to the industry.

SYED SHAFAAT ALI:

He doesn’t even need any introduction now. In my opinion he is even a better Bilawal than Bilawal himself. From Altaf Hussain to Imran Khan; he can mimic any politician and he is the only person in Pakistan who can make your wish come true of listening to the voices of your politicians speaking the truth. His latest video where he mimicked 24 singers is a proof of his immense talent. We will soon be able to see him in the upcoming movie Parwaz Hai Junoon alongside Hamza Ali Abbasi and he is certainly going to rock it too!

HANIA AMIR:

The cute and bubbly Hania Amir is a fresh addition to the entertainment industry. She made her debut with the movie Janaan where she played the character of Palwasha and won the hearts of millions with her acting. But before this she used to make dubsmash videos. And how did the makers of Janaan approached her? THROUGH A FACEBOOK MESSAGE! A place where all the girls get  WILL YOU FRAANDSHIP ME messages; Hania got the offer to play Palwasha and we had our very own Preity Zinta (Well she resembles her a lot I think) and became a refreshing addition to the industry.

Zaid Ali, Shaam Idrees and Shahveer Jaffery:

We all have known these boys making brown vs white parents videos and making us smile with their hilarious ideas. They became sensations being followed by millions and their videos were watched and shared by people from all age groups. This immense popularity helped them to make some place of their own in the entertainment industry. As Zaid performed his gig in Hum Style Awards 2016; Shaam and Shahveer got the opportunity to perform in the Lux style Awards 2017 landing them the opportunity to be a part of the entertainment industry.

ARSHAD KHAN AKA CHAI WALA:

Ooper wala jab bhi deta hai chappar phaar ke deta hai. From a tea stall to the modeling world his journey is a true example of the power of social media. As everyone knows a picture of him got viral while making tea and next he was getting makeovers at Nabila’s Salon and starring in music videos. The drastic change of his lifestyle showed the true power of social media.

But all that glitters is not gold; social media has a dark face too. It not only works as a talent hunt agency; it also provides opportunities to people who misuse it and defame not only themselves but the whole nation. The most accurate example of it is Qandeel Baloch (May she rest in peace). First time I saw her on a show called Desi Kurriyan where her name tag appeared with GULUKARA (singer) written under it. But after some time like every other Pakistani I was tagged in her video on facebook and found out that she was definitely not a GULUKARA. The scene which followed was witnessed by whole Pakistan and resulted in the loss of a young soul. She did mistakes but was she the only one who made them big? NO! All of us tagging our friends in her videos, liking them and actually taking out enough time from our schedules to comment on her videos and abuse her also made her mistake huge. If the social media had avoided her in her first video she may have been alive. In her case social media really proved to be a HUGE DISASTER! As of  now we are repeating the same mistake by trying to learn how to eat a tomato through Nasir Khan Jan’s videos, making memes on him and HAVING THE FAMOUS ’FUN’. Another deserving addition in the disaster list is none other than Taher Shah; though he is an ANGEL kind of disaster but obviously the guy would never have got this much attention if not for the social media and maybe the kid in the ANGEL video would have been saved from being a part of this disaster.

These are some pros and cons of the social media. If it is a bliss or disaster you decide! Plus Ramadan Kareem to all!

Titlee Episode 19 Review – The Most Selfish Mother Ever!

The story is being stretched to the limit now and even some of the primary characters like Naila’s parents are completely missing from the picture. Naila’s attitude has been the same right from the first episode and there has been zero character development. Now every time she thinks she might get into trouble for something or if she needs something, she bribes her husband and children! It was funny watching Naila buying all those gifts for her daughters after Amna saw her with Rehan. It went to show her materialistic approach once again but Amna has been brought up differently because her grandparents have more of an influence on her therefore she was not going to forget what she saw so easily. Naila is completely lost in this extra marital affair and thinks she is invincible. Even after Amna saw her, she did not change her attitude at all. Rehan is the only person for whom Naila goes the extra mile, she has never even done so much for her own daughters. This basically goes to show what her priorities in life are. It also makes me wonder how different her whole life could have been if she was married to a good looking man with money!!

Titlee Episode 19 Review - The Most Selfish Mother Ever!

Naila has been shown as a very selfish and reckless woman; she is not only having an affair but she is doing so quite openly. Even when her children are in the house and it is time for their kids to come back home from school, she does not make an effort to make sure that Rehan is not around at that time. Although, I want the drama to wrap up quickly and I am sick and tired of watching Naila getting away with everything but I have to say that the whole approach which the writer has taken vis-à-vis Naila’s attitude throughout the drama has been very realistic. Although she does not have a single good quality but somehow you don’t see her as a “black” character but you see her as someone who is very flawed. Even right now, the way she continues to spend time with Rehan even though she got a reality check more than once shows just how far Naila can go to please herself. Right from the beginning, she has been shown as someone who lives to please herself and is very rigid too. She is only flexible when she knows that showing flexibility will benefit her in some way. The affair also shows how two people who are involved in such a relationship do not pause to think about the consequences. Rehan does not have a lot to lose but Naila could lose everything if Ahmed finds out what is going on.

I am very disappointed with Ahmed’s character because sometimes it is very difficult to connect to his feelings. Even after going through so much, he still falls for Naila’s lies and gets exploited and manipulated over and over again. It is difficult to predict what turn the story will take from here but I hope that this will be the final twist in the story which will eventually make Naila realize how wrong she has been. She does not deserve to be loved by all these wonderful people and should pay for her actions! I absolutely ove Hania Amir in this role, she is such a brilliant actress.

Nazr e Bad Episode 35 36 Review – Ending Seems Promising Now!

Ohkay so, just when I was completely losing hope in this drama, the 2nd episode of this week restored my faith in it a bit because it showcased that the team was now headed in the right direction where they were now clearly thinking about showing the consequences of Parvez & Almas’s deeds. Having said that I will still speak about the loss of plot in quite a lot of tracks because they are still heavily relying on different characters to fill in the 38-40 minutes of an episode.

Aftab to acha khasa tha, achanak usay kya ho gaya? This is exactly what I was thinking when I saw Aftab behaving oddly, but then again, it was suggested that he was under the influence of magic that Almas was directing at him because she wanted Abeera to get married to him, hence his behavior. I think out of all the things that Abeera has done, the only thing that is worth appreciating is that she chose to disclose her mother’s secret & told Salma the truth about Almas being a magician. Aqmal thought that just because Abeera didn’t want to get married to Aftab, she was fabricating a lie but then Salma seemed double minded & partially convinced at what she heard. I think now they should also show Salma & Aqmal putting two & two together & coming to the conclusion that everything that they endured when Aftab was married to Maham was also a result of Almas & Parvez’s magic.

I thought that Shazia was gone for good but she was brought back to drag the drama. It was amusing how out of all the people in the world, Shazia was the one who was stumbling upon Parvez. Shazia’s claim ‘tum mujhe qabr se bhi bulaoge to mai aa jaoongi’ made me nod my head in affirmation, because seeing the level of desperation this girl has shown, I won’t be surprised if she will open up her grave & crawl back to Parvez. In the race of Desperadoes, Shazia has left Jeena far behind!

Oh well, I see Nida Yasir & Sanam Jung calling different beauty experts in their morning shows to help girls with their skin & face issues, but I guess they should forget about everyone & invite Azfar Rehman because where he had dark circles in one scene, they were miraculously gone the next moment & not only that, he had a bright face that Ayesha Sana dreams of & rosy pink lips, so I am sure he has a lot of amazing beauty tips to share with the girls! It was quite amusing how the director didn’t pay attention to all these details because now it is quite evident that even he is not too keen on using his energies to give this drama a decent end. Things are being dragged as per the orders of the producers & the director is just going with the flow, which by the way is actually missing from the scenes of Nazr e Bad.

I just don’t understand where they put so much of effort, why didn’t they bother shooting the scenes which were actually needed to add depth & logic in the story? Abeera & Salma’s conversation was one scene that should’ve been shown & the most important scene was Nusrat stumbling upon Parvez’s secret but they just didn’t show it? All of a sudden we got to see Nusrat informing Maham that Parvez is a magician? How did Nusrat get to know because all these days, she was seen standing by the door pane or fixing the bed-sheet of different beds, so such an important moment & it was just casually covered in a conversation? In stead of showing Maham frantically running around because her kid was sound asleep, they should’ve paid more attention on shooting the scenes that were necessary, like we all have waited so long for this to happen & when it happened, nothing made an impact!?!

Anyways, I am actually quite glad that they hit the bullseye by showing Maham’s conversation with Molvi Sahab, who not only translated the Ayah of Holy Quran, also explained its meaning & told Maham to end her relationship with Parvez with an immediate effect. I am glad that they decided to throw that analogy out of the window that Parvez is a good husband & just because he will seek Allah’s forgiveness, he will be forgiven. These things make a lot of sense in real life but when it comes to a drama, such sort of stories are written with an intention of imparting a message to those who tune to it, so it was actually very important to show Parvez receiving a severe punishment for all of his wrongdoings because this is exactly what happens with those who like Molvi Sahab said, try to interfere in Allah’s Affairs & like Nusrat said, wage war against Allah & His Word. I am glad that the team of Nazr e Bad chose this direction for the ending because not every other drama is meant to be a ‘romantic love story’ & not every other character deserves a happy ending. I am glad that Maham learned the truth about Parvez & immediately realized that everything that went wrong in her life was because of him. It was sad that Maham was blaming herself because obviously what she learned shook her to no end, so her reaction seemed quite natural & realistic.

Humera also got divorced & it was quite stupid of Almas to tell her to fake a pregnancy to save her marriage? Ohkay, the fact is that she wasn’t pregnant & she got divorced so how could Almas encourage her daughter to live with a man who is na-mehram for her? Almas was panicky because things were slipping out of her hands but then again, to see a mother giving such sort of advice to her daughter was ridiculous. Almas got paralysis attack & it was good that Nusrat gave her a piece of her mind. I am glad that Nusrat declared she won’t be forgiving Almas, this is exactly what should happen!

Oh well, the preview of the next episode showed Do Muh Wala Baba again, I thought he died & was a water under the bridge but I guess he was brought back to give one final ‘Kathak Class’ to Parvez before the show ends. The preview also showed Ahmer winning a lottery which depicts happy times & secure future for Nusrat & her entire family. I guess now they will show Maham & Aftab’s reconciliation as well because that’s the only logic I see behind bringing Aftab back in the story. Even though the direction of the drama has gone really bad, like it is ridiculously poor but the fact that the story has started making sense & the team is headed in the right direction, I am ready to ignore all those glaring mistakes. Please share your thoughts about these two episodes of Nazr e Bad.

Yakeen Ka Safar Episode 06 Review – Intense & Gripping!

Ohkay so, this episode of Yakeen Ka Safar did seem slow in the beginning but as it passed by, it got intense & the note at which it ended had me biting my nails because of the way things unfolded. The actors deserve full marks for breathing life into their characters & the director deserves full marks for making things so realistic that you just can’t help relate to them on some other level.

It was quite interesting how they showed a transition in Zubiya’s attitude & her overall mannerisms, like she was on a different tangent because she met a guy who she was in love with & who was making her happy. This is exactly what happens when girls at a tender age fall in love where they don’t have any idea about the intricacies of life but just start living in some lala land because of the promises that their partners make to them. Just because Zubiya gave away every single detail about herself to Rameez, he made the most of it & used everything to manipulate her. It was interesting to see how Rameez knew what he had to say & when to push his luck because he had read Zubiya so clearly that he knew that she was just a lonely girl who longed for some love & attention. I must say the way the writer & the director elaborated their relationship was quite intelligent, like they showed how Rameez was testing Zubiya & the lengths she could go to by emotionally blackmailing her & just when he saw that she would do anything that he’d say, he made another move.

I must say the way Daniyal approached Noori’s case was brilliant. What is commendable here is how they have shown Daniyal being emotionally invested in this case as well. It was actually quite sweet that Daniyal wasn’t just playing his role as a lawyer but was encouraging Noori to pursue her studies, since he knows that she feels passionately about education & was a teacher in her village. Daniyal met SHO Ayaaz & told him to file the FIR against Jahangir & his friends. Once again they shed a light on how policemen despite knowing the reality do everything to put a lid on it but just because Daniyal had medical reports, Ayaaz couldn’t do much.

My favorite part of this entire episode was Daniyal’s meeting with Bilal. Even though I have always been against the usage of children in our dramas but characters like Zebo, Jazza & Bilal restore my faith in the fact that young boys & girls can also be used in the dramas to serve a better purpose & to add that quotient of innocence that children are a picture of. Bilal’s refusal to take the money was another very sweet aspect, it showed that Noori taught him self-sufficiency & even at such a tender age, he was mature enough to not take any favors. I think it was intelligent of Daniyal to put that opportunity to good use where he told Bilal to report him everything, like he could see that the young boy was eager to help his sister & wanted to do everything for her. I will say that I was disappointed in Lateef, like he is being scared for no good reason, at least he should’ve given Daniyal a chance to explain everything to him or could’ve asked him how Noori was doing. It seems as if Lateef is relieved that he doesn’t have to deal with Noori anymore, which is a shame.

So, Rameez pushed Zubiya to elope with him & Zubiya being naive that she is agreed to that. I think this was a bit unconvincing that a girl who comes from such a strict & conservative family got so much of confidence to take such a bold step. Yes, restrictions & undue ones at that can push people to the limit but Zubiya gave in a bit too easily. All this while I was hoping that may be Rameez’s intentions were pure but he proved the otherwise because Rameez just wants to use Zubiya & throw her like a tissue paper & just because he could see that Zubiya needed some sweet talking to get comfortable, he continued with it.

I must say I enjoyed seeing how Sheema devised ways to insult Khalil in front of everyone & how with so much of subtlety she got back at him. Yes, she was wrong in not guiding Zubiya & just being a spectator but then seeing how Khalil insulted her parents & didn’t allow her to attend her sister’s wedding, what else can be expected from her? Even though Sheema knew that Zubiya was planning to run away with Rameez, she kept it to herself & waited for the right time to use everything against Khalil where she started calling every other relative to not inquire but actually inform them that Zubiya wasn’t home. Khalil couldn’t see what Sheema was doing but then again, he is someone who doesn’t believe in reflecting on his actions otherwise he would’ve understood that this was karma’s spin on him!

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this episode. Even though this episode had a slow start, everything was unfolded in a very convincing manner. The actors did such a great job & the director gave this episode a perfect treatment. The background music was spot on. I must say the switch between the scenarios where one girl was getting help to come out of her troubles & the other was falling into a deep pit was balanced out perfectly by the director. Beenish Raja stood out more than ever, she is a very fine actor. Sajjal Ali was phenomenal where she portrayed Zubiya’s hesitation but confidence in a perfect manner. Ehtashamuddin showcased Khalil’s state of mind to perfection as well. Bilal has to be one of my favorite characters in this drama & not to forget, the child artist has done such a brilliant job too. The preview has gotten me excited already & I can’t wait to see what Khalil’s reaction would be, so, definitely looking forward to the next episode. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Yakeen Ka Safar.

Fawad Khan: How you educate yourself when you are on social media is important

Fawad Khan became the heartthrob of Pakistan after his role in Humsafar. Female fans have gone gaga over the actor and eagerly wait to see more of his work. The actor who welcomed his second child in October 2016, did a photoshoot with his wife Sadaf for Masala Magazine, earlier this month and the amazing photos of the duo are relationship goals!

His bearded look and the candid moments captured in the photoshoot were enough for all the fans to get drooled over them. In a recent interview with Masala Magazine, Fawad Khan talks about the age of social media, matters of the heart and his obsession with astronomy.

On lending his name to a fashion label (Silk by Fawad Khan), “I think it’s in very responsible hands and I really admire my wife’s style sensibility. I have borrowed that myself several times.”

On creative differences with Sadaf over Silk by Fawad Khan, “Well yes, because maybe I do not have the eye that she has! She has a far more trained eye; she is constantly on social media so she’s better versed with fashion trends. I have an extremely classic style sensibility; some people might even call it boring! But I guess simpler things in life make me happy! When it comes to the expectations from the brand it’s in good, safe hands and I can trust it blindly. Even if there is an argument, she has a way of going about it and convincing me, which all wives do (smiles). So I just shut my mouth and follow the leader!”

On evolving style sensibilities… “It depends from occasion to occasion on how OTT you can go. I believe in the classic. Of course, over the years I have become more ‘civilised’. Earlier, I used to be quite an animal when it came to dressing up (laughs). However, I have never been ostentatious in my approach, I am quite simple.”

On the equation between artists and stylists, “In India, I used to work with Abhilasha Devnani and I think she did a wonderful job in whatever we put together. In Pakistan, I have often worked with Omar Farooq. I think both of them have a very mature sense of style. But I do have a final word on the looks since, at the end of day, I have to wear it and I need to feel comfortable in it as well. I give my inputs and work on the combinations. So far I don’t think I have gotten it all that wrong.”

On fashion do’s and don’ts, “My view on that has changed a bit. I think you need to be the way you are without bothering about what people think is fashionable and not. Yes, one should be well groomed all the time. But I have had lazy days when I just don’t want to do anything and I have literally stepped out in slippers and pyjamas. So that’s my opinion currently though it might change in the future. These days I am relaxed but when I get into work mode full time, I will take more care (of what I am seen in). Otherwise on an average day, I have a ‘who cares’ attitude (smiles).”

On becoming a father again, “It gets better and better every day and I think that’s the case with fathers. Normally a woman carries a child for nine months and those feelings are very internal. The guy may not even know the details of the situation. That changes after a child is born which is when the responsibility actually dawns on you as a father. Since this was the second time after Ayaan (his elder son), I was more prepared. But it’s the most amazing and emotional feeling. Right now I just hate staying away from my kids. I have all the affection in the world for children. Not because it’s clichéd to say that, but I actually believe they are the future generation and how you nurture them and the environment they grow in will reflect on our own future. That’s why I feel love and care will breed more love and care. It’s all about the energy you give out and frankly, I fear that about the world now. The vibe being sent out is very dark and negative…”

On social media, “Social media is obviously playing a massive role… I used to discuss with Shakun (Batra, the director of Kapoor & Sons) at length about this. He used to argue that technology is great for the world and he has a point. If used the right way, it can actually revolutionise the world. But it’s not being used in the right way now.

How you educate yourself when you are on social media be it Facebook or YouTube is important. For instance, my recent obsession is astronomy. I watch every other documentary on the subject since it intrigues me. Everyone has different interests but instead of constructive learning, people generally tend to lean towards the negative…and I think social media has somehow given fuel to this kind of thinking. So if used the right way it can be great but unfortunately we tend to gravitate towards the other extreme.”

16th Lux Style Awards – Highs and Lows

Lux Style Awards are the only awards in Pakistan which cover all the entertainment channels, the film industry, the music industry and the fashion industry therefore the viewers get a chance to see the entire industry under one roof. This time around HSY was in charge of the award ceremony, he was the director of the show and everyone was talking about the changes he made in the format of the show. On the red carpet everyone was talking about certain surprises which were in store including Imran Abbas’ singing performance. In this article I will talk about how the function was conducted, some of the skits and performances which were worth mentioning and how this show was presented to the viewers who were going to watch it on television. The article does not contain my views about the nominations and the celebrities who won the awards.

Here is my take on the 16th Lux Style Awards.

The Highs

I will start by talking about those moments of the show which completely won me over. First of all, the addition of the national anthem was definitely a positive aspect. I also liked the way all those iconic celebrities who have made their contributions to different fields of entertainment were shown on the screen while Atif Aslam sang the national anthem and the audience showed their respect by standing up. Atif Aslam sang the national anthem beautifully too.

The skit featuring Osman Khalid Butt and Maryam Saleem was funny and honest but its timing wasn’t perfect. The idea of including the fashion squad was great, I enjoyed the way everyone reacted to this idea and the fact that all the people who were part of this squad were experts in their respective fields.

Like every other year, the production values of the show were impressive and this year the camera work was definitely much better than the last few years. Previously, viewers were shown the same faces in the crowd over and over again and usually similar expressions too but this time the camera man focused on different celebrities sitting in the crowd.

Ali Kazmi hosted the red carpet really well, the way he interacted with the celebrities showed that he was good friends with all of them therefore the interactions were spontaneous and fun.

The only dance performance worth mentioning here was that of Reema. The choreography, choice of song, her outfit, her make-up and her expressions were right on point. Jimmy Khan, Abid Brohi and Ali Sethi’s singing performances were energetic and fun.

Halit Ergenc inclusion in the show was a terrific idea. Everything he said about Pakistan and Pakistanis was touching.

16th Lux Style Awards - Highs and Lows

The Lows

Unfortunately, this was one of those shows which had far more lows than highs because of multiple reasons. Firstly, Atif Aslam could not handle multitasking. After singing (lip syncing!) so many songs continuously, he was exhausted and breathless when he finally started hosting the show. There was a lot of hype surrounding the fact that he was going to host such a show for the first time but he definitely did not live up to people’s expectations, there are so many other hosts who could have done a lot better. He looked uncomfortable and there was absolutely no spontaneity, everything he did including singing or those “dance moves” were too rehearsed and he did not look comfortable doing any of it. Also, all the songs Atif performed on were too slow and his lip syncing at times was terrible. There were too many dancers on the stage when he was performing but even then the performance as a whole was not entertaining enough.

Although Osman Khalid Butt’s skit in the beginning was funny but it should have come after the national anthem. If the director decided to add the national anthem to the ceremony, it should have been come before everything else.

It was a really bad idea to show the ceremony, red carpet and fashion squad in one go because it completely ruined the flow of the ceremony. The red carpet should have been shown separately because apart from ruining the flow, it also increased the duration of the entire show considerably and it required a lot of patience to sit through the entire award show.

The #HindiMedium joke by Osman Khalid Butt wasn’t really needed, personally, I did not enjoy it mainly because of the fact that Saba Qamar did give some phenomenal performances this year and she deserved the award. Mahira Khan and Osman Khalid Butt’s rap was passable. There was nothing out of the ordinary or too witty about the content because it did look like they had just picked up things from all the discussions on youtube and different forums and compiled them in the form of a skit. I hardly laughed at any of the jokes.

Junaid Jamshed deserved a better tribute. It would have been so much better if Atif Aslam wasn’t burdened with so many things since our industry is full of talented people who could have contributed to the show. Also, someone directly associated with Junaid Jamshed should have been part of the tribute. Unfortunately, there was nothing touching about this tribute.

It was really funny when Atif Aslam actually referred to Mawra Hocane as “Hocane” and not “Hussein”! He pronounced her name wrong, not that I blame him but it was really odd coming from the main host of the show. Nauman Ijaz’s comment when the audience predicted Udaari will get the best drama award was rude. He said, “ab itna bhi frank hone ki zarurat nahi hei!!”. Although Dillagi was a phenomenal play and deserved the award but even then his remark was extremely rude.

Maya Ali’s remarks when she came to receive best actress award did not make a lot of sense but definitely showed the mentality behind playing such roles and feeling pride in doing so. Like every other year, many celebrities who were not even comfortable speaking English were forced to do so or felt that they had to speak in English because everyone else was doing it! Aly Khan was the only person who spoke Urdu with finesse.

Overall, the show was disappointing and most of the celebrities failed to live up to the hype. There was too much happening; the show itself and the red carpet but it wasn’t impressive.
How many of you watched the show, please share your views about
